Venetian castle dating to the 1200s, on a rocky promontory with an arched bridge & an old prison.

The visit of the castle ruins is very pleasant and interesting, definitely recommended. The location is extremely impressive, practically built on the cliffs overlooking the sea. A €5.00 ticket for adults is required for the visit, which can be purchased at the entrance, while children/youths from an EU country up to 25 years old get in free. It takes about two hours to visit the entire area, which is quite wide. Since there are no shelters from the sun, it is advisable to visit the castle in the late afternoon, so as to also enjoy a beautiful view of the sunset, note that the castle closes at 8 p.m. The only drawback is that in many areas of the castle, it is possible to walk on walls or areas that are extremely exposed or overhanging, without any protection against falling, so special care must be taken.
A majestic castle at sunset – stunning, vast, and a bit neglected. The Castle of Methoni (also known as Modon) is one of the largest and most impressive Venetian fortresses in the entire Mediterranean. Its size alone is enough to leave you speechless, and the location – stretching out into the sea with a small watchtower on an island connected by a bridge – makes it absolutely worth a visit. Entrance is €5, but as in many Greek sites, EU citizens under 25 can enter for free. I highly recommend visiting in the late afternoon so you can enjoy the magical light of the sunset. Walking along the bastions or across the main square as the sun goes down is an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, the castle closes at 8 PM, so you only get a glimpse of the sunset before having to leave. It’s a shame, because it would be amazing to stay longer. That said, it’s clear the site isn’t very well maintained. There’s no map, no real signage, and some areas feel almost abandoned. You can explore freely, but some parts can be unsafe due to lack of barriers or upkeep – especially near the higher bastion areas. Still, that raw, unpolished charm adds something unique. In the end, I strongly recommend it. Methoni itself is a lovely town, and this castle is absolutely a must-see if you’re in the area.
Beautiful Beautiful Breathtaking Views. We loved it!!! Thank you for keeping it beautiful so everyone can see!!! Easy to walk around. Don’t wear flip flops but hiking shoes.
Worth visiting for sure. Tuesday's the castle is closed for visitors but you could explore the area around it. Majestic, timeless, powerful energy. The raw sea is captivating against the castle walls, an eternal battle. Very appreciative of the on going restoration works.
beautiful place rich in history and path to walk around. there are signs also in English retelling the history. views from there are gorgeous. the entry is 5€ for person. don't forget to take a jacket, it's by the coast and tends to be very windy.
A spectacular castle for picture taking and history, especially on a sunny day. You can walk all over, and the very end - the tower at the sea, is so picturesque. Highly recommend it. Just note that the last entrance is at even before 3pm - we came at 3 and they said we had 2 minutes.
The view from here is absolutely stunning. While the castle isn’t perfectly preserved, that only gives it a romantic, timeworn charm. It’s an absolute must-see — just wear sturdy shoes and watch your step, since some paths feel more like climbs and can get quite adventurous. The combination of sea, stone, and history is unforgettable.
Although mostly ruins, still an exhilarating hour or so walk through history. Highly recommend, but have good safe shoes band walk carefully

Tranquil, sparsely populated island with a small beach, clear waters & a 19th-century lighthouse.

Totally worth it! Just few info cause I know its tricky to find on the web: - You can take a boat from Methoni -at least in August- which goes every hour and costs 15e return. It’s a 15min ride. - The waters are crystal clear and the island is super green! The beach is not organized with sunbeds etc but you can find shade under the trees. Take water and some food with you. - Bring a pair of sneakers with you so you can explore the forest in the island! There is a designated path you can follow. - There were many bees when I was there, so take some ammonia with you in case you are stung. We had no issue, but you never know!
Noted “Not to visit”, after poisoning dogs. No matter how beautiful is was given to the people there
Beautiful crystal clear waters, worth the trip. You can get a ride with Balkan tours at the Methoni pier.
Be aware of poisonous food for your dogs. In August 2023 dogs died!!!
Beautiful and quiet island.
(Translated by Google) Amazing island with a huge history & natural beauty, Sapientza is by far perhaps the only place in Greece. We went there from Methoni with the boat of the fantastic captain Alexandros Triantos. The name itself is history. Dimitris' father was the last ranger of the island. And Alexandros on the 4-hour cruise he does explains everything about the entire area with humor and always in a good mood. We dived a few meters from the island seeing the cargo of ancient 2000-year-old shipwrecks, the columns & the Sarcophagi. Incredible experience with Alexandros the guide If someone goes to Methoni & doesn't do this cruise (Only Alexandros does this tour as for him it is a personal matter) they are missing out on a lot Search for Sapientza on the internet (Original) Καταπληκτικό με τεράστια ιστορία & φυσικό κάλος νησί, η Σαπιέντζα είναι μακράν ίσως μοναδικός τόπος στην Ελλάδα. Incredible water, shade under the palm trees, off-hook cell phone - only turn it on to ask for a pick-up if you haven't rented the boat for the whole day - and a spot (that, if you don't come out of the summer misery) will get you out until next summer (at least). Amazing shop owner who's very friendly and helps you to pick your souvenirs. Large selection of souvenirs to decent prices! Make sure to get your gifts here!
This souvenir shop in Methoni is an absolute gem! Every item is crafted with meraki, and the owner's passion is evident in every detail. A must-visit spot! 🔆⛵🇬🇷
Very nice souvenir shop with great choice and good quality pieces!
Beautiful and great quality products that are actually made in Greece! ❤️ The best souvenir shop I have ever visited. I will definitely come back again when I will visit Methoni for more gifts, and stuff for myself! Thank you!
One of the best souvenir shops in Greece. There’s something for everyone from hats, sandals and towels to jewelry and art. The owner is friendly too!

Got the 2+4 hours windsurfing package for my son. He started learning the basics through a two hours session with a tutor who did an excellent job and my son loved it. Now practicing alone and he enjoys it so much. Thank you guys!
Beautiful beach and surf spot. It's really fun to surf there with turtles and flying fishes. Very nice and helpful staff. thank you so much for the good vibes. we enjoyed it a lot!
The best place to be. All the guys working there, including Kostas, are extremely warm, friendly and always available to assist you with anything you may need. In addition, their knowledge and professionalism is something that stands out. Of course, I can't help but mention the amazing prices they offer for their services. Thank you very much for being there and making our summer holidays better😁
Amazing place and people. The windsurfing lessons are also available in English and German and the price is more than fair. Overall a great experience. I will definitely come again.
Terrible experience at this sports club. The young woman who works there is extremely unpleasant. It should be a relaxing time, windsurfing. It's not. Stay away, if you can. They apparently have very, very strict rules delineating the windsurfing area. This isn't a problem in itself, but where it gets complicated is when they don't give you any explanation at the start and then this young woman allows herself to bark at you. It almost ended badly. I don't recommend the place at all; if you can go elsewhere, go without hesitation. Also note that the opening hours are very random. They sometimes open at 2:30 p.m., sometimes at 11:30 a.m., without any indication. Another guy who works there, who comes from Athens, is very friendly and apparently tolerates the presence of his girl colleague.
Just Awesome Wakeboarding behind the boat was a pleassure. The Family was on the boat watching. You can Rent Several Great Water Sports items for jung and old. Nearby is also an excellent restaurant to relax and recover in the shaddow.
Such such friendly service, very personable and could not sing the praises of the female instructor more she was very good and we all came away with a smile. Definitely recommend very positive experience thank you so much.
Lampes super clean spot, is one of my best wing foiling experiences in Peloponnese. Sapienza island just opposite cut the waves, offering unique training conditions with steady cross shore thermal winds, almost every afternoon. The water sports center owner is an amazing high spirited guy ready to help with his experience in the region and knowledge of watersports.

We hired the excellent mountain bikes for a ride to Finikounda and back on Monday (+ a ride all around Methoni to get to know it better). On Friday we had the bikes again for a lovely tour with Aldona to local catacombs and then through the olive groves to local churches, both in ruins and still standing. This was a great way to see the local area and archaeology, and to go to magical places we'd never otherwise see or even know about. Cycling through the olive groves was fantastic. Aldona is very passionate and knowledgable about the local archaeology, and a lovely person too. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Aldona for taking us on an amazing tour. This started with a bike tour to visit the catacombs and then a boat trip to Sapientza and a hike round the island. A really great way to explore the area. Highly recommended. Sapientza was a very informative and enthusiastic guide.
If you want to experience the beautiful landscapes, villages and churches in the surroundings of Methoni, don't hesitate ! The bikes are all good, the owner knows very well the area and will tell you where to go, a must do in Methoni !
Nice Lady renting out the bikes for a very good price. Can recommend it. Very fair return policy.
Aldona is knowledgeable and helpful. Great tours.
