5 stars because it's free, but it was a nice if small museum. I would view this in conjunction with the Mesas do Castelinho Archaeological Station. Park anywhere you can legally find because there's not a lot for the museum. It's worth a visit
Very interesting museum, the details the ancient script of the Cynetes, ancient inhabitants of Southwest Iberia, believed by some to be Celts, this would be the only record of Celtic writing, and is believed to use phonecian characters. The lady at the museum was very helpful and explained many aspects. In the area that are also other interesting archaeological sites such as Mesas de Castelinho, the food is good and the people are friendly, good for a trip for lunch or week exploring the hills, or view the carpets of flowers in spring.
Please update your opening hours on google. It shows open Sunday as does the sign on your doorbut it is closed.
Informativ, text slso in English.
Closed on Mondays. Looks like a great museum from outside. We went on a Monday and there was a sign posted saying it was closed due to unforeseen circumstances. We called the number offered on the sign and were told that the museum is closed on Monday. We also met the cleaning lady who told us that both museums in town are closed on Monday for cleaning. We'll be back another time. There is lots to see in Almodovar - check out the bridge on the East side of the city, as well as the Castilinho South West of Almodovar!
Nice place to learn about that ancient and mysterious write type.
Very friendly staff

Very interesting museum about the artist Severo Portela but also with a small space about the many shoemakers that used to work in Amodovar. We were given with a nice and usefull overview of the museum. The artist is not very famous but his work can be seen in so many places across Portugal... Don't skip it!
It's a small museum but it's really interesting to visit. Free entry
Please update your opening hours to show that you are closed on Sunday. You are wasting our time riding to the museums in this town which are not open.
Very interesting beautiful area xx

(Translated by Google) The Building It is located in Praça da República, in Almodôvar, and dates back to the 16th century (it is said to have given shelter to D. Sebastião on 8 and 9 January 1573, when he passed through Almodôvar on a visit to the Alentejo and Algarve). It was the Town Hall and, when these moved to the Convent of S. Francisco, it was transformed into a prison. After being restored in 1982, it was transformed into a Municipal Museum, which received part of the estate donated by Mestre Severo Portela, who gave it its name. Here you can admire drawings, oil paintings, books, studies, sculptures, diplomas and decorations by this painter and sculptor. On the ground floor of this space is the exhibition entitled "Shoemaker - Memories of a Trade" which reflects the type of tools and the way of working of the many artisans (the craft was passed down from father to son, regardless of their number) who, in dozens of workshops spread throughout the town, manually produced the shoes, boots, clogs, gaiters, etc. that the inhabitants of Almodôvar wore. The collection is very interesting as it includes examples that explain the footwear appropriate for the type of work of the farm workers in the Almodôvar region and an extensive collection of children's shoes. The Man: Master Severo Portela (Júnior) He was born in Coimbra on 10 September 1898 and died on 8 July 1985 at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon. He was the son of the writer Severo Portela and Miquelina Penalva Figueiredo Jardim Portela and grandson of the Viscounts of Monte São. He graduated from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts when he was only 22 years old. He was a disciple of Simões de Almeida (Sobrinho) in Sculpture and of Columbano in Painting, where he stood out, developing a pictorial style influenced by his Master of the Painting Course. He fell in love and married a lady from Almodôvar and stayed there for 10 years, away from any contact with the arts he embraced. He returned to Lisbon in 1930 and three years later received a scholarship from the National Board of Education, which enabled him to take study trips and improve his painting techniques in Spain, France and Italy. He adopted Almodôvar as his hometown, where he was President of the Grémio de Lavoura. His works are scattered throughout Portugal, in museums and public institutions.

Small but very interesting and entertaining. We loved it 👍
A very interesting place to learn something about the archaeological treasures of the Mesas do Castelinho and the cultural heritage of this Part of the Alentejo
Museum was closed during working hours. There was a phone number to call to arrange a visit, but nobody answered. Some later I received a message saying that museum is closed.
Free to visit, really traveled in the time.

Through pieces found during excavations and others donated by collectors, visitors can learn a little about the customs and techniques used in the past. I recommend a visit. (Translated by Google) Returning to the older times of Alentejo and its rural life, as an aside we were disappointed with the reception that did not exist, a small museum but I recommend visiting it in Santa Clara (Almodovar) is as beautiful as it is due to the lack of kindness...
