Stone Age village reconstruction on an excavation site, with lake dwellings & demos of handicrafts.
Slide 1 of 8
A fantastic an thoroughly researched reconstitution of lakeside pile dwellings dating back 4000 years and which seem to have been abandoned around 800 BC. Very interesting and well documented copies of original artifacts and information about the way of life, diet, clothing, funerary rites and known technologies of the times. The lake level used to be 5m higher at the time. The site was abandoned due to a significant drop of temperatures (global cooling? ;o)
My visit to the Pile Dwelling Museum in Unteruhldingen was a fantastic experience. The museum is beautifully designed and the reconstructed dwellings are truly impressive. It's clear that a great deal of care and expertise went into bringing this historical settlement to life. Walking along the boardwalks and seeing the houses up close really makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. However, as an English speaker, I found the experience to be a bit limited. While the visual aspects are stunning, there isn't much information available in English. The films and cinema presentations, which seem like they would be very informative, are purely in German. Adding subtitles in English, French, or other languages would be a huge improvement and would allow more international visitors to fully appreciate the rich history and research presented here.
I'm a history nerd, so I was really engaged in showing my 4 (she says nearly 5) year old daughter the way our early early ancestors lived. The museum has an outdoor area, an indoor exebition and 2 short movies playing constantly. Outdoor you can visit several pole houses dating back +-3000years in time, but our guide told us, not all houses are original and local. They gathered several cultures and rebuild the houses exactly as they did in the early days. Some parts of the tour are really nice but they also neglected a small area on the side where docu's where made about this era. Our biggest issue appeared to be our small dog, because dogs are only allowed on the outdoor village and not welcome in the movies area and indoor exebition (mostly containing original tools made of stone, bronze or iron). This divided our small family into 2 teams during the visit. The museum is located in a touristic area, where swimming in the lake, playing minigolf, playing in a outdoor wooden playing area for children, and even several eating options are located. It's located near Meersburg but for me it's worth the 5km travel outside this historic city and make a beautiful relaxing day full of playing, exploring and a bit of history. Children and dogs are free in the museum.
Blumberg is situated at the very southern edge of the Black Forrest and also the last German town before the Swiss border
The new visitor center is great, using the latest tech to explain the history in a relatable and immersive way. The reconstructed houses are kept simple, with basic info panels and props to show how they were used. By the time you've done them all, it is getting repetitive. The one-way system didn't work because some doors were locked. There is no excuse for having so much content in German only, even in the brand new multimedia part, considering this is the area's main tourist attraction (and supposed wet-weather saviour), and the majority of other guests were from outside Germany.
I wish I could understand German, cause most of informartion was missed due to language barrier. My kids loved a lot of birds there.
We visited on a weekday. Highly recommend to come close to the opening hour: it will allow you to look around without crowds. The tour starts with several virtual rooms, you can be explorers, who have found the remains of pile houses. After that you get a short information tour on the place and then you can go and explore by yourself. The staff is very helpful and happy to answer any questions, sometimes turning them to a small tour. There's also a lot of information written on the buildings, allowing you to know more about historical aspects. Taking pictures is allowed outside, but not in the buildings.
Museum management is arrogant and rude, there was no information that said no pictures and no staff present. Don't waist your time here. There is a great free children's playground and beach right there but bring a picnic.

An amazing location isolated from the world as you overlooking the never ending lake below. A beautiful church, grape vines leading to the lakes edge and the sun on your back. Great place for a coffee or to admire the beauty the lake and its surroundings have to offer.
A drive along Lake Obersee at sunset overlooking the Alps wall is priceless. When you stop, you can enjoy the view with the beauty of nature where the church blends in with this landscape.
Kloster Birnau is one of the most beautiful churches in southern Germany — a stunning Baroque pilgrimage site set high above Lake Constance (Bodensee). The view alone is worth the visit, with vineyards stretching below and the blue lake glimmering in the distance. Inside, the church is breathtaking — full of gold details, frescoed ceilings, and delicate sculptures that capture the elegance and devotion of the 18th century. The atmosphere is peaceful, with soft light filtering through the windows and music often playing quietly in the background. We could only get a quick glimpse at the inside because there was a ceremony taking place when we arrived. Outside, the gardens and terraces are perfect for a short walk or quiet reflection. The church still belongs to the Cistercian Order, and the sense of care and tradition is clear in every detail. Kloster Birnau isn’t just a religious site — it’s a place of beauty, history, and serenity overlooking one of Europe’s most scenic lakes.
Magnificent Baroque Cathedral on the hill above Boden See. the interior cannot be photographed and the guided tours are limited in time but its a must visit if you are in the area.
The interior design is marvellously beautiful. The terrace, overlooking Lake Constance and the Northern edge of the mountain ridge of the Alps made me dream.
Kloster Birnau is a serene and picturesque stop along Lake Constance, perfect for a quiet break from busy travel. The baroque church itself is stunning, but what truly sets the place apart is its peaceful atmosphere and the breathtaking views over the vineyards stretching down to the lake. The setting is ideal for a reflective walk or simply soaking in the scenery. If you enjoy calm, scenic spots with a touch of history and spirituality, Birnau is well worth a visit. Entrance free, parking 🅿️ paid and toilets .50 cents
Beautiful bulding, good spot for a stop. Has a parking nearby, which you have to pay, of course :))
Great little stop, lovely area, building, view.

This is an awesome place for kids and adults alike! Lots of interesting facts about tractors and cars - they even had a special exhibition about the “Käfer” Volkswagen! We’ve all enjoyed this museum a lot and will come back again!
The most complete tractor collection documenting European and german brand history you can imagine. All presented with uncountable details of agricultural objects set in scenes. Just overwhelming for tractor fans. Cars have been added in a second round, nice but not the same way they show tractors.
suprisingly big and unique selection. not only cars and tractors but old time way of living. in case of bad weather recomended. even in good one;-)
Think it could be my favourite museum. So much to see, all interesting with brilliant staging. Much more than cars and tractors plus good music playing while you follow the route - so as not to miss anything. Also, we had lunch at the lovely restaurant. Highly recommend.
Even if you are not a fan of tractors, come here anyway. There is a lot more to see than just tractors: They have cars, tools, toys, scenes of shoemakers, beauty shops, and much more. I especially liked the floor with all of the "little" cars. The basement floor is most impressive. The displays are artfully built. I spent over 2 hours here. They even have little toy tractors for kiddies to ride. You don't necessarily need to read German to appreciate this museum.
A very beautifull place to visit. It is worth the ticket price. Also very good place for kids. New and improved experience.
A wonderful collection of tractors, cars, trucks and escavators. I even saw a can that could be driven at 200 kmph in the 1900s. The collection is from many places across the world. Crazy to know that now a days we are struggling to fix two wires while a 100 years back these vehicles were built with extreme complexiry
Stunning collection, mainly tractors but also some very nice vintage cars, as well as many traditional and newer tools and machinery for farms, reconstruction of traditional workshops for (mainly) rural occupations and crafts, as well as mid 20 century small shops, with samples of merchandise from that time: sweets, tobacco products, canned food, small tools for the household, newspapers and many many more, in fact a substantial sample of everyday life in the '50s and '60s. Back to the big mechanical stuff, you will be impressed by some of the more exotic tractors, some with motors of 10000 cubic centimeters or more, few with one cylinder-motors and lots of mechanical gadgetry mainly from the first part of the 20th century that helped to make those wonderful beasts moving. Also noticeable the very large number of different producers of tractors, in different countries and many factories, mainly in Germany, but also France, Italy, the US - so different market environenent compared with todays concentration of only a handful of tractor manufacturing firms. Take your time and browse patiently through several floors of well designed exhibits of mechanics and daily rural life! 👍🍀🤗

I love snakes from afar, of course 😁 Friendly staff 🙂
Ok-ish experience in the Reptilienhaus in Uhldingen. It is located directly at the one big public parking area in the city, so no detour needed to visit this place and see the animals. To be clear, it is just one big room with approx. 20 terrariums, mostly snakes and some other reptiles. Very positive, one snake was on display for everybody to touch it at the body and feel the skin. That was interesting. You will probably spend 30-45 minutes in this tiny zoo and 15 EUR for a family ticket. Our kids were happy and interested - so time and money well spent.
Interesting for sure, but a little bit pricey for what it is..
The minimal entry fee keeps the critters fed and warm.... Stop by and say hello to menagerie.
The family ticket is worth 16€. You get to touch a real snake which is a highlight. The staffs are very friendly.. its a small room though with snakes, geckos etc..
If you are lucky there is a snake 🐍 on a branch which you can pet
Not a big place but very well kept and kids were super excited! Very friendly English speaking staff. A mini gift/toy shop.
Not too big but very interesting.

(Translated by Google) Have had breakfast there several times and are thrilled. Great selection, good quality of the food on offer and the price is completely right for what is on offer. Nice historical atmosphere. Only the room temperature could be a little higher, but the old walls are certainly difficult and expensive to heat. And every time you open the door, a rush of cold air comes in. So dress warmer, don't sit in a direct line to the door or come in spring/summer and enjoy 👍 (Original) Waren schon zum wiederholten Male dort frühstücken und sind begeistert.
(Translated by Google) You are always pampered; This time we went to “KINO & Lunch”: A film that won an award in Cannes was shown after the pasta buffet in the small cinema at the back of the building. Fresh salads, antipasti, and a selection of warm, delicious dishes were served before the actual film. The special pampering effect: there was also a delicious dessert on top! Really a shame here, and like most of cities around this lake in German side. I have a small Ford Transit, which is, by the law, a car (not a camper, not a van, nothing big). I build the inside to sleep in the back. But to park your car, you have to pay from 8am to 6pm. But what they don’t tell you, is that after 6pm, you are not supposed to stay in the parking, and then, it doesn’t matter what car you have, you need to pay the camper price of 20€ for the night !!! Such a shame ! Avoid this place and most of the cities in German side around the lake if you just want to relax for a bit of time
Not so helpful staff.

Today I very politely asked at the tourist information office about a bus connection from the tourist information office to the stilt houses and was treated condescendingly, saying it was only an 800-meter walk and there were no buses. If I could walk that distance, I wouldn't have asked. Despite having an 80% disability and no disability card, there was no way to get to the stilt houses using public transport. The very expensive parking lots are all far away. This is not a place for people with walking difficulties or anyone who isn't fit. It seems like it's all about making money. I won't be coming back.
