We visited the Abbey at Maillezais on a quiet Tuesday morning and enjoyed wandering around the grounds and learning about the history. Such an interesting place. Top tip - take one of the guided tours ( in French) and the history of the abbey is brought to life. The views from the top of the tower are amazing - take your time walking up the stone staircase! Once you have finished your visit - make sure that you have a look around the gift shop - lots of interesting gifts and many are locally made using local ingredients - including local crafts people who have earned the ‘Values of the Marais Poitevin Parc’ label - I recommend the handmade soaps!

From a distance, the surviving fragment of the nave looks like a fortification, but turns out to be a powerful ruin, with outlines of the various versions of the old east ends. Guest house remains almost complete. Some useful audio-visual displays, very helpful to the visitor. Beautiful grounds, including a cloister garden.
