At last,a historic site that isn't crowded with tourists, yes it's tucked away but worth finding as it's old, serene and wonderfully decrepit and if you are lucky like us you will have it all to yourself rather than fight hordes of bus daytrippers from Sofia when at Rila 100 km north
A very peaceful and tranquil place to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the monastery as it must have been centuries ago. You truly realise the meaning of serenity here. Well kept, authentic, and with free admission. The Rozhen Monastery is one of the oldest and best-preserved monasteries in Bulgaria, dating back to the 13th century. You can see stunning views of the surrounding hills, mountains and vineyards. The monastery is famous for its beautiful frescoes, wood-carved iconostasis, and peaceful courtyards. Unlike some larger monasteries, it has a very intimate and authentic feel, making it a true spiritual retreat.
Very peaceful place with breathtaking views, so well preserved it looks like the time stopped at 18th century- going there is like travelling in time.
All of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in the region with deep and important history
Tips for Visitors: Wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Be respectful of the sanctity of the site. Consider making a donation to support the monastery's upkeep. Combine your visit with a hike to the Melnik Earth Pyramids for a truly unique experience.
It was interesting. A place sacred and peaceful. Worth the visit. The monks have even opened the old rector so you can see it.
By far the most calm monastery I have visited in Bulgaria. I have been here 25 years ago and now, a month ago. It is very well maintained and the interior of the church is magnificent. One of the only places I have visited in Bulgaria where the candles are self-service and one leaves money for the candle and gets the amount of candles corresponding to the left money. The young guy sitting inside the church was kind enough to explain to me why one of the icons inside the church has a donkey head in stead of human. The parking is a bit away from the main entrance in case you have mobility issues. I would definitely come back to this monastery. If you fancy buying souvenirs or local produce such as jams there are few vehicles parked on the parking area. Lovely view of Melnik hills from there.
It's a really underrated place to visit... Absolutely a must. The views are jaw dropping, the facilities are good and it costs nothing....you are not allowed to film or take pictures in the main chapel, but that was not an issue. Overall I would highly recommend ❤️🇧🇬

This historical site is of great significance, preserved to this day with exceptional detail. Every element reflects the rich heritage and craftsmanship of its time, allowing visitors to step back in history and experience its authenticity. The meticulous preservation ensures that the site's original charm and historical value remain intact, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. Finally, at the exit you can taste and buy regional wines.
Beautiful, authentic, traditional Bulgarian 🇧🇬 house 🏠 Shows you a glimpse of the life of the Bulgarian people in old times. 💯 worth visiting! 🤍💚❤️
Kordopulov House is very well preserved and maintained. Since it is the largest Revival-period house on the Balkan Peninsula, inside you will see richly decorated and ornately furnished rooms, remarkable woodcarvings, colourful stained-glass windows, and impressive wall paintings, reflecting the wealth and good taste of the Kordopulov family that once lived here. In addition, the surrounding sandstone hills and the surrounding mountains are stunning. This house is no doubt the most iconic site in Melnik and arguably in South-West Bulgaria, a must see if you are in that area. There is a small admission fee of 3 Euro.
The house is very well kept and the presentation inside is rather detailed and interesting. There is a summer garden which is the terrace at the top, and a winter garden which was ubfoetubaly closed when we visited. The tunnels were very interesting. The reception at the entrance was nice.
Beautiful museum with a lot of history and wine degustation on site included with the tickets.
Very impressive. Huge House With impressive Details
The museum is very nice. We loved it.
It’s one of the most beautiful houses, I’ve seen. There’s a lot of story and hidden gems

Great experience and doing it at the source! We enjoyed our experience here(April 2024);not just tasting the wine but we had fun doing it! Worth trying if you drink alcohol! Very good tasty wines with reasonable price. (Per bottle for us was 10bgn which is 5€) . Alcohol% per bottle was 12% Staff and Service - Fast and friendly! The man takes pride in his work. We didn’t wait. The lady showed us around, asked where we preferred to sit, started attending to us before the man came and took over. Atmosphere: Amazing. Beautiful view of the small town and nature. FYI : 1)You can pay with card. 2)If you drink alcohol, You can do the wine tasting first . Wine tasting comes with a price on its own(better ask them the price for the tasting before trying because almost 1 full glass of any wine to taste cost 5bgn and half glass cost 2bgn and something ) but the advantage is that you can taste the wines before deciding which ones you like personally and will like to buy. 3) Remember how the road was so don’t exaggerate in the wine tasting because you will be “climbing down” on a road with “some stones”around We hope to come back again. Thanks!
Great homemade wine, Mitko is an honest guy and tells exactly what he thinks directly which I suppose some people think is arrogant, in my opinion I prefer such people. *the cellar is very old probably in around 150/200 years *the wine was good and you can order also typical local appetisers
Amazing wine cellar with authentic Melnik grapes variety wine. Great to cool down in this place and taste the five different wines this family produces. We were lucky to meet Mitko Manolev himself.
Don't be concerned about the negative reviews of Mitko. Maybe he has off days but we found him good fun and interesting-ask him about how he became a celebrity on a reality show during covid. His wines are fresh and natural - straight from the barrel. As they have no added preservatives or fining / refining they are best drunk young - now! He had a broad leafed melnik and a blend with syrah for those who like a more fuller bodied wine. Both had heavy oak notes. The blend was probably a better wine for me. The Melnik had some fermentation still happening in the glass which once subsided the wine improved. At 12.5% and the right temperature both were a treat. 5 Lev each. Keep away from the wines in the main street in plastic bottles sitting in the sun and make the effort to walk to his cellar for something different. What a visit to Melnik is all about!
Homemade wine. Its not good and 1 glass wine 3 Euros. They are crazy..
A must see in Melnik. We met Shestaka’s brother and he hosted us for a degustation and gave us a great overview, tips, personal insights of the wines, region and day trips. His wines are made with Bulgarian traditions and none of the fancy wineries atomization processes. And it’s great wine!
So nice winery and great view. Uncle Mitko is so funny guy and he gave us quite well information about wines.
Skip this wine cellary - it is not worthy to visit. Actually you have to climb (many steps!) to this place, and then your tour of wine cellary is limited to view few old barrels and you will taste very usual wines, comparing to that what you can find in other wineries in Melnik’ area.
