Maria gave us a detailed tour of this gorgeous family winery and shared a tasting of many of their wines — all fantastic. It’s obvious they put a lot of time and energy into the small details to make their wine and hospitality exceptional. Thank you!
One of the best wine tours and tastings we have ever been to. Maria was so knowledgeable and accommodating after we thought we had made a reservation but failed to finalize. The wines are very unique. I would highly recommend this winery.
The winery has existed for over 100 years but is now housed in a beautiful, modern facility that blends into the countryside. The wine tour was great - the guides were knowledgeable and passionate about the wines and wine-making process. Both guides were studying a Masters in wine tourism (btw that’s the class I should have taken - however, my Masters in wine drinking has been well earned). We arrived during the harvest and were able to see the grapes coming in, straight from the fields. Overall, Greek wine has a low profile compared to other European countries however, it should not be overlooked. I recommend taking a few hours out of your Athens city break schedule and check this place out. Take the metro to Koropi station and then a taxi for €25. Worth it.
A Hidden Gem in Attica: Papagiannakos Winery – A Testament to Greek Excellence If you’re seeking a truly exceptional wine experience in Greece, look no further than Papagiannakos Winery – a boutique, family-run estate just outside Athens that deserves every bit of praise it receives. With roots going back over a century, this remarkable winery is a shining example of heritage meeting modernity, producing limited quantities of world-class wines with profound respect for the land, history, and craftsmanship. I had the pleasure of meeting Vassilis Papagiannakos himself, along with his gracious wife and daughter, and was immediately struck by their warmth, humility, and unwavering passion for their craft. Vassilis doesn’t just make wine—he tells a story in every bottle. A story of Greek soil, sun, and spirit. The winery specializes in white wines, masterfully expressing the distinct minerality and freshness of the Attican terroir. Their Savatiano, often underestimated elsewhere, is an absolute revelation here—crisp, elegant, and layered with citrus and herbal notes that speak of the Mediterranean breeze. Their Assyrtiko rivals anything found in Santorini, and the reds, while fewer, are bold, balanced, and structured to age beautifully. But the standout surprise? The rosé. Move over Whispering Angel—this is the real deal. Dry, aromatic, and with a vibrancy that lingers on the palate, it’s sophisticated without trying too hard. Sustainability is at the heart of their philosophy, with a deep commitment to environmentally friendly practices and a reverence for ancestral methods. You feel that integrity in every sip. Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or a curious traveler, Papagiannakos is a must-visit destination when in Athens. And if you can’t get there in person, their wines are fortunately exported globally—so the magic of Attica can reach your glass, wherever you are. A rare jewel in the world of wine. Bravo, Vassilis.
Did a private tour for two ppl and it was one of my best experiences in Athens by far. They show you the facility and the whole wine making process , followed by a cheese and wine tasting. Finally , you have the possibility to purchase the wines at the end. The family was so welcoming, sweet and responsive. Essential tour and part of your trip if you are a fan of Greek wines. Highly recommend
Excellent and informative tour and tasting. Electra, our guide, was knowledgeable and engaging. The winery produces delicious whites, reds, and rosé. The cheese accompaniments were well-paired local varieties and delicious.
We were there for a Xiaomi event that combined perfectly a photography seminar with wine tasting! The building, facilities, surroundings are all excellent, easily compared to others in the Old or New World!! And the wines were very good, too. It was a wonderful experience!
They accommodated us with a same day tour and wine tasting. Electra gave us a private tour of the winery and provided a wine tasting of five wines. Electra took her time and gave us a detailed explanation of each wine and of the wine making process during the tour. We tasted five wines -- three white, one rose, and one red. All were excellent. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.
