Pictures taken in October. The top of Kala Patthar offers one of the best panoramic views of the Himalaya Mountains. Located about 75 minutes above the last village of Gorak Shep, from Kala Patthar you get a great view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and the Khumbu Glacier. Some people prefer to go there for sunrise. I’ve been here dozens of times over the past 20 years and prefer the sunsets.
Best view of my. Everest can be seen from here. Best time to visit this place is in the evening and see sun set from here. Experiencing Sun set is better then sun rise from here but mind you it’s very cold here and it’s the most highest place you go when you are on the EBC track. Uphill walk is very difficult here but the views from here are stunning do call a touch preferably a head touch because it’s very dark after you see the sun set and do carry walking sticks to avoid and injury and carry your water at-lest 2 litres as nothing is available on the way.
Incredible hike I died on the first part since it is very steep. Worth to go, at any time of the day to see the Everest and the rest of the mountains. Its a challenging trek but one of my favorites.
An absolute gem of a place. This hike will certainly kick your bu**, as this is 18,400 ft elevation (that's ~2k ft or roughly 700m higher than your last stop Gorakhshep). Most if not all itineraries offer this as an optional hike - not sure why, but this is an absolute'do not miss' hike for incredible views of Mt. Everest. When you reach Gorakhshep (by the way, congrats you made it that far without getting sick, you're almost there), you have just enough energy to get only one shot to do this hike - Do.Not.Skip!! You'll regret it later if you do! A tip: Do not go for the sunrise hike, go for the sunset hike instead. A couple of reasons why: Morning is the coldest time of the day, and at -20C plus wind chill, you may want to reconsider that. Secondly, the sun rises behind Mt. Everest. So the better option by all means is to do a sunset hike! Start in the afternoon sometime around 2:30p giving you enough time to get settled, maybe enjoy a hot thermos of milk tea while you're up there and enjoy the magical golden sunset on Mt. Everest and Lhotse peaks, and the changing hues as the sun goes down. Hey maybe you get lucky with a waning moon and see the Milky Way too! Now how does that sound :) Have a great adventure folks. Thank you Kala Patthar, we shall return one day!!
Landing here is limited to 2 people weighing under 200 kg in total. If you come by helicopter, you will land at Lukla airport, defuel, fly and land at Hotel Everest View, then take turns to either land at Kala Patthar or do a flyover. Rugged, gorgeous landscape that has a commanding view of Everest Base Camp yet is still so dwarfed by mighty Mt. Everest.
I recently had the incredible opportunity to hike up Kala Patthar, and while it was undoubtedly strenuous and challenging, the mesmerizing views at the top made it all worthwhile. The hike up KP is relatively straightforward, but the high altitude adds an extra layer of difficulty. Be prepared to face the effects of altitude, such as shortness of breath and fatigue. The effort put into conquering Kala Patthar is immediately forgotten as you reach the pinnacle and feast your eyes upon the majestic panorama. The awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks, including the mighty Everest, are simply breathtaking. The sense of achievement and the overwhelming beauty of nature make every step of the ascent worthwhile. As you ascend, the temperature drops drastically. I highly recommend packing extra layers of clothing to combat the intense cold. The biting winds and freezing temperatures can catch you off guard. Proper gear, including thermal clothing, gloves, hats and lots of water are essential. The physical and mental challenges of hiking Kala Patthar should not deter adventurers seeking an unforgettable experience. It's an opportunity to push your limits, connect with nature, and witness the world from a different perspective. The feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the summit is unparalleled. In summary, hiking up Kala Patthar is undeniably challenging, but the unparalleled beauty of the views makes it a must-do for adventurous souls. Prepare yourself physically and mentally, pack warm clothing, and embrace the journey. The sense of achievement and the breathtaking vistas will leave you with memories to treasure for a lifetime.
Absolutely unforgettable trek and amazing views of Everest and other beautiful mountains in the Himalayas in and around and from atop Kala Patthar Peak in the Everest region.
I was afraid that i wont be able to climb the summit of 5644M (18500ft) but i made it. My great personal achievement. A lot of black boulders around the peak hence may be called Kala (black in Nepali) Patthar (stone in Nepali). Magnificient view of Khumbu valley, a ring of most of known peaks including a large part of Everest & even south col is seen from here. A must visit place.
