What a somber place to visit and worth the time if you are into history with some time to explore. We have seen the signs for a while and decided to stop. It was worth the stop. The main building wasn’t open but we walked through the area. Follow the blue arrows and you will be able to find many of the sites discussed. This place was nice, clean and well kept.
Passing through the area and saw a sign for it. Very little of the camp left but the exhibition area showed a lot about the camp and prisoners. The guide was very helpful and friendly
Camp Hinzert is tucked away from main view very near to the Autobahn but you have to be on the smaller roads to actually see signs for it. Its very well kept and has a powerful feel when you arrive to see such an important piece of history innocently hidden as it is. The memorial is small but fitting and the museum is definitely worth a stop inside. It was not crowded at all and the research staff who run the museum were very happy to see us and very helpful. The descriptions are all in German but they have listening devices for free that translate everything. If you're interested in this topic of WWII history, I'd highly recommend making a stop for it on your way through the area.
such places must be visited so as not to forget history, otherwise in our time they like to distort facts
You can listen to the post in English with a translation device and the host is awesome with assisting and gives great insight. They actually have one building that still exists from those sad times.
Sobering reminder of the atrocities committed in WWII. The visitor center was not open when I was there so can't comment on it but there is an information board with the history of the site that was helpful. I don't recommend going out of your way to see this. However, if you're in the area, it is worth pulling off the autobahn to see and remember what happened.
This is a small concentration camp memorial but is a great way to learn about the horrors that happened in WWII and learn about the people and victims involved. The museum is free but donations are encouraged. There is also a little chapel and a cemetery. There were 321 known victims killed at Hinzert concentration camp.
It seems like the whole site was either demolished or completely wiped out. Only a small part of the site has traced of WWII and its contents.
