Beautiful, ornate church and monastery. Take a private tour with a knowlegeble historian for a few euros to see the treasures of the monastery and cloisters in this ancient building. Very pretty town with a stream running though it. So glad we stopped by.
Surrounded by several legends, the foundation of the Lorvão Monastery has been abandoned until the 19th century. VI, the time when the Suevo-Visigothic Parish of "Lurbine" was first identified, having been its founder the Abbot, who is known to have watched the Braga Council in 561. Although there is a marble stone with Ornato Visigod , the first written documents appear only after the first reconquest of Coimbra, in 878, the date from which the first written documents emerge witnessing the existence of a community that played an important role in the agrarian promotion and repopulation of the region. Cluny's monks, who founded the Lorvão Monastery, devoted him to the São Mamede and Saint Pelagius. In the 19th century X, its importance was already considerable and the monastery achieved great prosperity thanks to donations of faithful and rich-man, namely, during the government of Abbot Primo, who had cordial artists come to do works in the region. The 987 Muslim Investe ended this outbreak of progress, but after 1064 the Laurbanian community recovered its prestige and splendor and, around the monastery, a population attracted by the work offered by the monks in its vast properties grew. In this monastery there is the largest library in Portugal that was transferred to Torre do Tombo in Lisbon. The construction of a luxury hotel is planned
The heritage display is very interesting. Wish the guide was more open to being questioned, still it's worth a visit!
9th Century monastery. Not very busy. Worth the visit.
An amazing place in history with many wonder stories .
If you can, please go. You won’t regret it.
(Translated by Google) An old monastery where the daughters of D. Sancho I, D. Teresa and D. Sancha, lived. The entrance ticket cost €4.50 per person and gave access to the cloisters, the museum and the part of the church with the organ and the stalls. If you don't want to pay, you can visit the church, which is beautiful. In the museum you can see the history of the convent, as well as paintings and images of sacred art. Very interesting. The monastery closes at lunchtime, at 1 pm, so visits to the monastery can only be made 40 minutes before closing, to give you time to see everything. At the exit there is a pastry shop that sells convent sweets, such as the pastel de Lorvão or the nevada. (Original) Antigo mosteiro onde estiveram as filhas de D.Sancho I, a D. Teresa e D. Sancha.
(Translated by Google) I love history and everything related to it. So being able to see the tombs of the holy infantas was the best. The church is beautiful, and the choir is majestic. (Original) Adoro história , e tudo o que se relaciona com ela. Então poder ver os túmulos das infantas santas foi do melhor. Igreja e muito linda e o coro majestoso.
