White stone ruins spanning 2 arches in a field, with a reconstructed Roman amphitheater nearby.
Slide 1 of 8
The ruins of a Roman military base/camp are just along the road and above the canyon of river Krka. These are the remains of the base headquarters' building dating from 2nd century B.C. According to the digital reconstruction pictures the remains are the three arches of the building's entrance. Foundation stones and simple Roman style carvings can be seen. The rest and more interesting part of the base / archeological site is just down the road on the opposite side.
Nothing much to do or see. I guess if you are passionate about history, it might be more interesting. It's not gonna take much time, so it's also nice to see the waterfalls close by
impressive site amphitheater got great sound effects. Well laid out and boards with history and explanations on. Plenty of parking and a toilet on way to ruins . You pay 20 euros each but this gives you access to the northern areas of the national park . The arches gateway ruins are down the road you park at the waterfall car park and then walk across fields to them .
I'm going to be the odd one out and say these ruins really aren't up to much. There is a heavily reconstructed amphitheatre and the remains of something with arches sitting in a field unexplained. Its worth stopping for a quick look but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to visit.
Very cool small site with a lot of history, and a short hike to a beautiful waterfall. Was a great short trip. I'd recommend reading up on the site beforehand as there's no guide and limited signage around to give history buffs more details
Burnum was built at the beginning of the 1st century in a strategic position from which the crossing over the Krka was monitored and from where campaigns against Delmata were organized, and Pliny the Elder mentions it as a "fortress famous for battles". It was the seat of numerous Roman legions, including XI. legions of Claudia pia fidelis and IV. legions of Flavia felix, after whose departure, or at the latest under Emperor Hadrian, it became a municipium that played an important role until late antiquity
Great place if you love architecture and history. The only disadvantage of the place is that it is difficult to reach by car and on foot, but it is worth going to see two of the original five arches.
The two towering arches standing firm and making a mark in the test of time. Dating back to 1 AD, from a Roman Legion fort Burnum. If you are visiting the Krka national park you might as well make a stop here for a moment in ancient history
