I enjoyed hearing about the history of the Abbey and touring some.of the areas that are open to the public. I respect that this is still an active monastery and that the Christian spiritual heritage lives on. I enjoyed the wine tasting at the end of the tour and wish we had been afforded time to walk more of the gardens and vineyards since it was such a beautiful day.
Visited as part of an Emerald cruise excursion. We were lucky to get Father Pious as our tour guide. He shared the history and pointed out details with a love for the place and a good sense of humor. It was a lovely experience.
Wonderful grounds at the top of a hill overlooking Krems, Austria. We had a lovely tour of the Abbey followed by wine tasting and the opportunity to taste some apricot juice all made from fruit owned by the Abbey. In addition the abbey is on the St James trail (Camino de Santiago) for a nice place to stop on the pilgrimage.
Very nice serene monastery, the entry to the complex is free, the fee is just for the museum. The parking outside the monastery is free as well. Very nice place to stop by and visit when you happen to be around.
Perched high above the Danube River, Göttweig Abbey is a sight to behold from a distance. Its two-towered facade and imposing Baroque structure dominate the landscape, earning it the nickname "the Austrian Montecassino." The journey up the hill builds a sense of anticipation that is richly rewarded upon arrival. The highlight for most visitors is undoubtedly the Imperial Staircase, an architectural and artistic marvel. Adorned with a colossal ceiling fresco by Paul Troger, it is considered one of the most beautiful and largest Baroque staircases in all of Europe. Walking up its sweeping steps, you can't help but feel a sense of grandeur and history, imagining the guests of honor, from Maria Theresa to Napoleon, who once ascended this very same staircase. The abbey church is a feast for the eyes, with its intricate stucco work and beautiful altar. The abbey museum, located in the Imperial Wing, offers a fascinating look into the monastery's nearly 1,000-year history and its vast art collections, including a significant graphic art collection. What truly sets Göttweig apart is its spectacular location. The panoramic views from the abbey's terrace are simply breathtaking. From here, you can gaze out over the vast vineyards and picturesque villages of the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Göttweig Abbey is still a working monastery, home to a community of Benedictine monks. This lends a quiet, spiritual authenticity to the experience. Visitors have the option of taking a guided tour, which offers a deeper insight into the history and daily life of the monks, or exploring at their own pace with an audio guide. Göttweig Abbey is more than just a historical site; it’s a place where art, history, and nature converge in perfect harmony. While it may be less crowded than other famous sites, its grandeur, artistic treasures, and the awe-inspiring views make it an unmissable destination for anyone traveling through Austria.
Exceptional abbaye you must visit with Museum and peacefull garden along the Danube R1 bicycle road. They produce delicious apricot marmelade and liquor but also wine and have a nice shop. I advise you to book a room for one night as they have gasthaus residence. Also an excellent restaurant. Garage for bikes with power load is available. You will get a spiritual and nice experience.
A must visit if you’re in the area. Lots of things to see especially the church interior and the museum. You can also stay overnight at the Abbey. Expect to spend 1.5 to 2 hrs here. The Abbey grows their own grapes to produce their own wines - Riesling, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. They grow apricots which is produced into preserves and a nectar drink. At the Abbey, there’s wine and apricot tasting. Both are wonderful. There are a few walking trails. There’s a museum filled with interesting books and the local store that sells wines and the popular nectar drink.
Really nice abbey with great views. There is a presentation on Abbey history and a walk through with lots of historical facts. The paintings and sculptures are really good. In the end, you end the tour at a wine tasting produced by the monks.
