Small but so nice!! If you go further up the hill to where the slide (すべり台) is you can see the whole park. Played the slide for ¥100, so much fun! They have phone stands for you to take photo without help (so so soooo useful. Thank you!!) and there was also a staff going around to help take photos! Very interactive and beautiful houses. One of the houses even has the actual fire being lit up. Had light snack at Ichikura and tried the river fish (amago) and a sushi. Lovely time there.
Beautiful old houses and a reconstruction of the city as it once was set a charming scene. Visitors can explore a working carpentry shop alongside demonstrations of other traditional crafts. The area also features a museum and a small onsen offering a delightful foot bath. Here, you have the opportunity to collect a six-part stamp by following the entire circuit through the city exhibition, which even takes you up to a slide. From there, you can either slide back down for 100 yen or choose to descend on foot.
Absolutely breathtaking views. The garden is small, but everything is decorated in much detail. The fishpond under the sunlight is particularly beautiful! Hopefully I can come back in the fall to see the autumn leaves!
A very beautiful place. The location is small, but if you were staying at a nearby hotel, it's worth a visit. I think this should be considered an alternative to Sirakawa-go. There's an onsen for your feet on the premises.
Icon of Shirakawago but moved here when the government was building a dam and the huts were in danger of being flooded. Huts are well-preserved with many interesting exhibits in the houses. Worth the 20 min climb from the train station or you can take the 100 yen bus. Quite a big place to explore so plan for at least an hour here.
Nice place to go to when sightseeing with friends and family. Entrance fee is 800 yen but you can get a 10% discount by claiming the free discount vouchers at the tourist information center outside the train station. There is an onsen/bath house inside the village, 2~3 restaurants, and a loooong slide that you can get on for 100 yen. ☆ You must also try the footbath to relax your feet after walking the whole day! (It's found inside the village) 🚌 You can get on a bus from station to gassho village for 100 yen (buses run hourly)
Tranquil and scenic area full of history. Beautiful plantations and the wind chime structure was exceptionally stunning. The restros offered nice local food. On the top of the hill there's the long slide good for both kids and kidults.
It's quite a hike(up hill) if you choose to walk. Nothing much here, but just to absorb the traditional farming life. The slide was fun though... But it's another 7mins steep hike up...

Onsenji Temple is a unique and beautiful spot to visit while in Gero. After climbing a lot of steps, you'll find yourself surrounded by a cemetery with a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Once you reach the top, the view is just breathtaking. You can see the entire Gero Onsen town from here, and it's truly a sight to behold. The temple itself is quiet and peaceful, with a stunning traditional architecture. The natural surroundings only add to the beauty of the temple. It's a great place to visit for seeking a moment of peace and tranquility.
Nice temple overseeing the village that's known for the Possibly one of the best hot spring in Japan. It seems that they have over-marketed this place & now it feels like a theme park rather than anything authentic. IMHO Still the view is stunning.
Onsenji Temple sits gracefully on a peaceful hill, offering beautiful views and a sense of calm and serenity.
Beautiful place in autumn. 02-12-2024
Do you want to climb 172 steps to enlightenment? Once you reach the top, take some time out to enjoy the scenery, pray to the goddess of mercy and head back down to town for more adventures.
Fun temple to pray. I got my shrine stamp for 300 yen and got a great view of the city. Great way to start my trip to the area.
Smaller than I initially expected, but it'd really peaceful and has a beautiful view of Gero Onsen
A simple shrine with lovely grounds and a view of Gero Onsen Town. I was here on 3 Dec.

Stunning waterfall from the water cascading forcefully and truly an off beaten path with few tourists. Lotsa bear warnings though so you may want to wear one of those bear bells
Even in the summer there are not very many tourists so you really get to escape the crowds of Kyoto and Tokyo and experience nature to its fullest. The waterfalls are breathtaking. Apparently there are 200 plus waterfalls in the area. There are tour guides that can take you up the waterfalls, and I heard there are snow shoeing tours to frozen water falls in the winter. They do lots of other tours that include tea making during the hike, or hiking up to a ryokan and relaxing in an Onsen. I want to come back and try it all! The tour guide gave us a recommendation on where to swim in the river, so I’ll upload a picture of that too. The people of hida Osaka are incredibly hospitable and kind.
Nice hidden gem. You can't miss it especially if you're travelling by car.
American tourist looking for a nice nature day hike and a guide to help us navigate the area. Highly recommend to add a guided tour to your itinerary as a lot of the history of the area would have been lost to a casual visitor. Our tour guide was Reiko and she was extremely nice, insightful and conducted the tour in English. Overall very satisfied and recommend !
(Translated by Google) We parked our car at Gantate Park and walked around the walking path, which took about 20-30 minutes! Even elementary school-aged children could easily walk around with us! There were some steep stairs along the way, but they were well maintained so it was easy to walk overall. There seems to be another walking path, but it takes quite a while. On the way, near the signpost 800 m before Karatani Falls, there was a staircase leading down to the river. I went down there and waded my feet into the water! It was cold and refreshing, and it instantly cooled my body. I was burning up every day in the scorching heat, so it was very soothing. I wonder if the negative ions had something to do with it? A great summer memory. (Translated by Google) I walked this trail with my dog in early October 2025, just before the leaves began to change color. The entrance fee was 300 yen, which, to be honest, was almost too cheap. It was a little rainy, but the path was very easy and enjoyable. There were a few other tourists, but the winding trail meant we rarely encountered them, and the sound of the water was so loud we couldn't even hear each other. It was a very quiet and relaxing walk. If you're planning to photograph the waterfalls with a drone, be careful of branches and narrow spaces. There are very few places where you can "safely" take off, but there are some flat stones around the covered bench near the first waterfall, which makes it possible. Note to those planning to take the shorter trail: The second half of the trail is on a paved road, but there aren't many views. My dog and I followed the advice of a couple we met along the way and retraced our steps. This allowed us to enjoy the waterfalls, river, and beautiful scenery once again. Since there weren't many people around, we walked in the opposite direction without disturbing others, and we had a wonderful time. With much gratitude to Mr.Takuhara(?) who I assume is the museum's manager. It was a quiet Sunday just after lunch. First, Mr.Takuhara came out of his office to help us purchase the tickets. We then started walking through the museum, which is entirely in Japanese and, yes, a bit old looking. But we were wrong. Walking past one exhibit, Mr.Takuhara came out of his office again and explained it to us. And, yes, it was actually very interesting: a large interactive display of all the onsen-water-types (from very acidic to very alkaline) found in Japan, below a picture of a famous location, and below examples of what products can be made from that particular water. Cool. Again we wandered around aimlessly and again missed an interesting exhibit and again Mr.Takuhara came over to us. This was an interactive exhibit where you can dip paper test-strips into water from each of the water-types and see the test-strip changes color (acidic-alkaline). Cool. Then we made our way to the onsen and again we got help from Mr.Takuhara. It's a very precise ritual: stick your feet for 5 minutes in the hot water, then walk 4 rounds through the hot and cold basins, then stick your feet for another 5 minutes in the hot basin. Then you're done. Most invigorating and enjoyable. Many hours/walking later, our feet still felt good. Also, don't forget the nice views of the mountains on the opposite side of the valley. Reminder: bring your towel or you can't use the onsen. IIRC, small towels are for sale for 200 yen in the museum. This was the best experience we had in Gifu. Thank you, Mr.Takuhara. (We did not stay overnight in Gifu. If you want to know what which fantastic onsen we stayed, please read my other review.)
Informative but mainly in japanese(little English available). There was a collection of a student's lab experiments with onsen water, that was quite cool
A nice museum where you can learn about the history of onsens, as well as the types of onsens and their various properties. They're all in Japanese, though, and as a non-native we required the assistance of google translate all the way through. It's worth visiting if you're into history and want to learn more about it. There is also a hot-cold foot onsen outside which you can use, it's probably the only cold foot onsen in town as well.
A small but lovely museum with a foot bath where you can relax after exploring the area. It’s definitely worth the 400 yen entrance fee.
We didn't visit the museum. We just stop to enjoy one of the many open-air foot hot baths that was just in front of the museum. Water was very hot. Do be careful and not plunge your feet inside.
The museum would have been better appreciated by non-Japanese tourists if there was English translations for the descriptions/captions.
I good place where you can see beautiful Sakura trees and flowers on the entrance. There is a free hot spring pool for your feet just cross the street, and for free, you can enjoy the feet hot spring there.
Small yet detailed “Onsen” (hot spring) museum in the heart of a famous Onsen town (Gero). Friendy staff with enough English ability to make you feel welcome, but technical information is limited to Japanese. Some stuffed animals could interest young children for a few minutes but other than that not really a place kids would feel entertained.

The shrine is right in the middle of shopping square. We walk passed twice by not certain about the shrine or just shopping area. The landmark would be 3 meters Torii and sign in Japanese. The shrine is lovely and cute, with foot spa (foot osen) in front of the shrine.
A really, really small shrine. You could easily miss it.

A beautiful mountain on the border of Gifu & Nagano prefectures, Mt Ontake is awesome! Seen from afar Ontake-san is brilliant white for most of the year, and since October 2014, a plume of steam has been visible when the volcano erupted killing 63 people. It is still on volcanic alert level 2 (lowered from level 1 in August 2017), so it is still closed for hiking. Lower areas are still accessible but the peak and surrounds are off limits.
We've been here in late september 2017. The vegetaton in the higher altitudes were already turning into red. We parked our car in the parking lot of the cable car. Then we took to it to the base point of the climb. Th climb is not that easy and you need to be in a relatively good shape. Alternatively, you can just climb it very slowly :-). As for safety, the trail is safe with no obvious obstacles. After 1-1.5 hours of climb you'll reach a resting point. From here the view starts to be amazig. From the resting point to the mountain top is about 1 hour or less. Just before the mountain top (which was closed and you could only see it from the first pond) there is a hut. The first pond was not that beutiful. Looked like a muddy construction site. Unfortunatley for us, we started the climb around noon so we did not have sufficient time to see the other ponds. Make sure to start the climb around 8AM so you'll sufficient time for the entire journey, as the cable car closes around 4PM. The scenery is amazig once you leave the forest. Absolutley recommended.
I pray for the souls of the people who died by the eruption. Mountain climbing is prohibited as of January 2019. Since there is no forest from the hilly side, the view while climbing is good, but summer it is hot in the sunlight. My recommendation is the snowfall period. In the morning, you can climb the large slope of tight snow freely. It is an independent peak and there are no forests, so there is no place to avoid avoiding blowing in the wind. I want to climb the sunny and calm day. If you climb up from Ropeway Top station you can go and back in one day. More preferably, if you wear skiing, or if you climb taking it, When descending the mountain you can skiing freely on a wonderful large slope. It is a very long course of about 3 km to the top of the station and more than 4 km in total to the foot station. It is unthinkable to walk down this course during the snowfall period. Skiing climbing is the best.
Sacred mountain. Little bit scary because it is active volcano, But hicking was really great experience. Different. Just being there above 8th station, that feeling I will remember all my life. On 2014. there was eruption where 35 people died, we climbed on 3rd anniversary without knowing that. Must be there around 8AM if want to hike in the mountain, to see the lakes. Can't get to the top,it is closed, but can go till 2nd lake, just little bit under. Fir climb it is open trail from the ropeway only. Other trails are closed. Ropeway is working from 8-16:30 so must take care about timing. There are not so many people what is good, because it is really the place where should clean the mind. Quiet, calm, wind, smoke from vulcano, many shrines, statues, offerings on the way. Will go again. View is great, it is around 3000m -9000ft, breathtaking. Lakes are really beautiful. 2nd lake had shrunk little bit,it was in september. End of september, it was really fresh in the morning and evening. It was just a start of autumn colors. I went there one more time around 10th october and it was beautiful autumn time. There are few huts there on the trail, 8th and 9th station huts were working, could order tea,buy water, snacks. But should prepare everything before because of timing. Down at the ropeway can buy everything. In the ropeway building, next to the ticket place there is paper where you should write name, mobile phone,route- if you do that you will get free coffee( it is good one, drink on a way up while climbing on a rope way) Dont forget waterfall! It is really amazing.
It’s a super nice mountain for hiking!!!

(Translated by Google) November 6, 2025 (Reiwa 7) 6:00 PM ~ I visited this roadside station as part of the stamp rally. It's open as both a lodging facility and a day-trip hot spring, so it's great that you can still get your stamp after 6:00 PM. I had previously bathed in this hot spring a few years ago, and remember it being small but with great water. At the time I visited, the Yuttarikan hot spring was still open across the road, and I enjoyed its hot springs as well. This time, I was planning to collect my stamp, take a toilet break, and have a meal, but unfortunately, the restaurant was closed. Next time I visit, I'd like to take a bath. Nothing special about this place other than the relatively cheap price for the rooms, public bath and the unexciting food. Great Location.

Free foot bath by the river, very relaxing after a long day of walking.
Nice to sit outside by the river. Water is decently hot. We killed about 45 min waiting for onsens to open. Very relaxing for our feet. Japan travel means lots and lots of walking.
A very nice and simple foot onsen spot by the river. It offers great relaxation as well as a good view. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Gero.
Really like this area very much - a fountain & views of the Gero Ohashi Bridge. Went there on a late Saturday morning, after checking out from Gero Onsen Yamagataya. This was another great sight-seeing point. Not many people around at that time. Enjoyed the quietness, the peaceful atmosphere of this Mother Nature - a source of calm and tranquility. The steam and the bubbling water together with the nice weather and small breeze, made a beautiful picture as an escape from the real world for a while.
I went at 10.30 am in summer and the sun was blazing. Do not recommend going when it's sunny as it heats up the stones that make the bath and the water too. It was unbearablely hot to feet but otherwise enjoyable.
Outdoor free foot bath relaxing by the river. The water is very hot and and there's a few sitting area where you can dipped your feet.
Very peaceful footbath Onsen, a few things to look out for: - We came on 16/01/2023, going to snow in a week it is currently about 4 degrees C, as its located right next to the flowing river, it is a very windy area. Prepare for wind. - You can only bathe your foot - The water itself is not as warm as other footbaths or onsens you can find around the area. It is very warm at the source of the footbath but the small waterfall cools it a lot. Regardless, might be a nice place to sit and relax for a bit.
Nice open footbath by the river, perfect for cloudy or cooler days but I would not reccommend going there in the summer as there isn't any cover from the strong sun.

(Translated by Google) I went to Gero Onsen for 2 nights in February 2024. What do you think? Don't expect much from free? However, I was really drawn to the pit-style dwelling in Jomon Park that I saw on Google Maps, so I decided to go there. It was as expected. I'm really glad I went, and I especially recommend it to people who like museums. 9 minutes by bus from Gero Station, then 10 minutes on foot. There are Jomon artifacts on the railings of the bridges you cross on the way, and the Jomon pottery and clay plaques embedded in the bridges are very fun and make you interested in the historical museums and parks ahead. The view of the river from the bridge was wonderful, and the air and sky were very clean, making it a pleasant journey. It was a bit disappointing that the first floor of the memorial museum was closed due to renovations, but the permanent exhibition room on the second floor was open and the staff were friendly and very nice. On the second floor, you can trace the history of Gero's people and their history, from the Paleolithic period to the Heian period and the Middle Ages. Excavated pottery is on display. In addition, in the field of recent years, there were interesting historical exhibits specializing in the history of Gero from the Meiji period to the Showa period, as well as doctors who contributed to the medical activities of Japanese immigrants from Brazil who had ties to Gero. I thought that the people of Gero cherish their hometown very much. After that, we left the history museum and headed to Jomon Park. It's located right next to the history museum, so it's easy to get to. It's interesting to see the shabby houses that were built here that make you think that this is what houses in the Jomon period looked like. It's not at all fancy, but I'm glad that it gave me an impression of being real. The route bus was about an hour long, but it was relatively easy to get there and back. Above all, I thought it was great that the history museum was free and the Nohi bus was only 100 yen per ride. This Nohi bus probably looks like a community bus, and the Gero Exchange Center building at the bus stop that goes to the history museum was so impressive that I was overwhelmed. I'm sure the local people will be happy. There are eight shrines, including Hida Ichinomiya Mizunashi Hachiman Shrine and Hagiwara Town Kutsu Hachiman Shrine, which are called the Hida Hachiman Eight Shrines. Morimizunashi Hachiman Shrine is one such shrine, and it is thought to have been built between the end of the Heian period and the Kamakura period, based on the date of creation of the statue of the Kidō deity.

Since it was enshrined with surrounding shrines during the Meiji period, there are 12 deities enshrined here. The first deities enshrined here seem to have been "Susanoo", "Sarutahiko", and "Emperor Ojin". (Translated by Google) It is located near the Gero municipal parking lot, about 100m to the south. There is a shrine at the top of the stone stairs, so I went to visit it. The official name seems to be Mori Mizunashi Hachiman Shrine, but the company name monument is engraved with Mizunashi Hachiman Shrine, and the information board says Mori Hachiman Shrine, so are they all names? There are some unclear points. The ``Tanogami Festival'', which is designated as a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is held at the shrine as a festival, and there seem to be many materials related to it. Although it was written down, I was able to receive a goshuin stamp, so I gave it to him.
