As a local and long time admirer of the area, I had the absolute pleasure of joining a 2 hour morning ride with a 7-year-old that I was babysitting for. Our wranglers, Nolan and Ben, were not only kind and knowledgeable, but also made us feel totally at ease. We rode two incredible horses, Howdy and Bourbon. Both gentle, responsive, and clearly well-loved. The ride offered stunning views of Mount Princeton that I've never seen before and crossing Chalk Creek was a magical moment for both me and the 7-year-old. We also Climbed up to a ridge that gave us a sense of adventure and a peaceful, grounded connection to the land. The entire experience was fun, safe and deeply memorable. The little girl hasn't stopped talking about it and I already can't wait to go back! Highly recommend for locals and visitors alike.
We had a group of six, and the trail ride exceeded our expectations. Ralph at the front desk, the employees who helped get us on our horses, and John our guide, all had welcoming personalities and happy to share their passion and knowledge. A couple of people in my group ride horses regularly, so it is nothing small to say our horses seemed very well cared for and happy to do their job. The trail was a lot of fun with a varied path of logs for us to go over, water to go through, and amazing scenery! The extra fun perk was the water bottle holder they have for each saddle! It was a really good time and I am happy to recommend them!
Absolutely wonderful trail ride! Our daughter's wedding was in Salida & we booked both families to enjoy a break before the Big Event! Mikayla & Austin were great. Both especially patient with our 5 year old Grandson. He LOVED every minute ❤️ Nothing better than leaf peeping from horseback. Three years ago. We did the sunset ride. That was amazing, too!!
Great lil 2hr trail ride if you’re looking for something to fill a piece of your day. I hear the longer rides are fantastic for those that are able to spend the time out on the trail. The Wranglers were awesome and kept everyone confident from age 6 on up throughout the ride. The owners are fantastic, friendly, and long time locals.
My son and I came here for his first time riding and I have to say this place is incredible. Our guide John was so helpful and it was great chatting with him during our ride. He explained to us that the owner started these stables as a way to help rescue horses and that is a mission I will always support. If you are in the area or visiting I highly recommend Mt Princeton Riding Stables. This will be our go to spot from now on! P.S. Thank you John, Bourbon and Shadow for riding with us in the snow!❤️❄️
Highly recommend the 2 hour trail ride! The scenery was beautiful, the horses are so sweet, and the guides are knowledgeable and helpful! We had a beautiful fall day and saw some stunning views and some wildlife (deer and prairie dogs)! There were also a ton of adorable barn cats! Would definitely do this ride again!
We took a 2 hour ride on June 13 2025 with our kids (ages 10 & 12) and our family has had no previous riding experience. Faith and Donovan we extremely patient and helpful when our horses started to get stubborn mid ride. They kept the ride entertaining and we knowledgeable about the area. Loved being able to cross through the creeks on my horse, Scout. This was definitely the highlight of our trip and thank you for the precious memories that were made!
We did the 3/4 day ride and unfortunately the trailer to get to the waterfall was stuckin the snow. However, we were given the option to still do the ride on another trail or come back another day to so the waterfall. We chose to ride the Ridgeline, which is the other trail, and it was gorgeous! I would definitely come back here. Both of the staff we interacted with were so friendly, and our wrangler was very lovely to chat with. Both the horses were well trained and made the ride very enjoyable. Also the 3 legged pup just made our day.

We didn’t stay at Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort this time, but several locals in Breckenridge told us it’s the best natural hot springs to visit — and they were right. It was easy to find and worth the trip. The resort itself has a really nice setup. There’s a small store on site (I didn’t get a chance to go in, but it looked great), and check-in was simple. The girl at the front desk was incredibly kind and helpful. I rented a locker, got changed in the clean changing rooms, and headed out to the springs. At first, you see the pools, which look like regular swimming pools but are naturally heated by the hot springs. Each pool varies a bit in temperature — one warmer than the other — so you can pick what feels best. The area also has lounge chairs and a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains. The highlight, though, is down by the river. It’s a small, clear river with rocks and rapids running through it, and they’ve created little sections with big rocks where you can actually sit right in the water. The hot spring water flows in, keeping those spots warm, so you’re literally sitting in the river with warm water around you. Between the sound of the rippling water, the mountain backdrop, and the warmth of the springs, it was just an incredible experience. I’d definitely come back here again — and next time, I’d love to stay at the resort.
We We stayed at the Lodge, and while the resort itself has charm, the rooms really need attention. They’re very dated — even simple upgrades like a new shower head, a heated towel rack to help dry swimsuits and towels, and some fresh paint would make a big difference. Our king room unfortunately overlooked the hotel’s garbage area, which was disappointing. Not only was the view unpleasant, but when you opened the window, the smell from the old garbage was overwhelming. To make matters worse, the garbage pick-up came around 5–6 a.m. every morning, which was disruptive. The resort grounds are nice, and I’d love to bring my mother someday, but accessibility is a serious concern. There are so many steps with little to no hand railings, both leading to the pools and getting into them, which makes it unsafe and inaccessible for anyone with mobility challenges. We spent most of our time at the adult section in the three small hot springs, which were wonderful — but again, no hand railings made entering and exiting the pools a bit risky. On the positive side, the restaurant was outstanding. I have quite a few food allergies, and our server was amazing — she asked me to list them and then to let her know what I would like to order. I chose the blackened fish, and the chefs took great care to prepare a meal that was unbelievably delicious. The ease and confidence with which they handled my allergies completely took away the anxiety I usually feel when dining out, and I was able to truly relax and enjoy my meal. With some thoughtful updates, improved accessibility, and attention to the rooms, this could be an exceptional destination — and the dining experience is already excellent.
My wife and I just spent three nights at the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort. It was one of our nicest vacations ever. We stayed in The Creekside Suites part of the resort. The suite was spacious, well equipped, and clean. The room service was exceptional. The food in the lodge was extremely good. The food prices were reasonable. In fact, the prices for the food was cheap cheap compared to what we frequently pay for that quality of food in Massachusetts. We particularly enjoyed the location, because it allowed us to make day trips to Leadville and Buena Vista. My wife and I hope to return to this resort whenever we are in the area again.
Really beautiful campus, nice hot springs. They could use more signage for the hillside and cliffside rooms, we ended driving the wrong way twice - nothing is lit up there and you can't even tell where you're going when it's dark. It's also hard to see people walking around in the dark. I wish the infinity pool was open longer, that and the spots in the rocks by the creek/river were our favorite places to soak. The food at the restaurant is really good, but pricy. Their pastry chef does wonderful things, I recommend getting dessert. Spa is okay, my favorite part of the massage package I got was the body scrub and the hot towel afterwards. Hillside rooms could be cleaner, I could tell the carpet was not the cleanest around the bed and nightstand, I wish these places would get rid of the carpet. It was nice to see the rooms include a Nespresso machine and pods! My favorite features of the room were the Nespresso pods and the water pressure in the shower. Overall, this resort was nice, but a bit pricey. They should consider adding signage and better lighting for folks trying to find their way in the dark.
It was a great trip. The atmosphere is very chill and relaxing. Managed to find a great spot for the wife and I. Got in the river and stayed for 3 hours. Well needed soak. Highly recommend. Next time I'll try out the pools. I was so comfortable where I was, I didn't want to give up the spot.
Really, for $130 for two adults, for a day pass, this was not worth it. Feel better about yourself and stay at the Surf Hotel in Buena Vista if you choose to stay close and receive a way better experience for the prices they are charging here. I commend the restaurant for attempting to be "upscale" but honestly you'll find a better dining experience at Wesley and Rose in BV as well. We have lived in Salida for 8 years and this was our first time here, what a disappointment. For these prices you would have a way better feeling for the value of your money at Cottonwood or Sand Dunes Recreation in SLV. The customer service was flat and not very warming or welcoming.
We stayed two nights in a cabin. Super comfortable for the 8 of us. So nice to have the fireplace, as it was cold. Heat was adjustable in each room, which was nice. We had a couple of issues with cookware, but the receptionist was super responsive. We loved the springs, borrowed mountain bikes and went for a 10 mile ride, mostly on the trail that used to be a narrow gauge railroad track! Super nice. We encountered a bit of snow, but it was fine on the bikes! We visited in October, so the long slide was closed, but plenty was open. We enjoyed the pools along the creek, especially!
We spent 3 nights at Mt. Princeton - we had one of the Creekside rooms which was right by the river (the view was gorgeous!) and felt like it had been recently renovated. We tried almost all of the natural spring-fed pools and our favorites were the natural river pools and the adults only spa pools. The service everywhere at the resort was friendly and fantastic. And the restaurant was amazing for both breakfast and dinner (reservations are needed for dinner only). I would highly recommend a visit to Mt. Princeton!

We did a girls trip for Breckenridge for my sister’s bachelorette party. We ended up booking with Colorado Rafting Adventures for an half day trip and it was the highlight of our weekend. They are a small company which is what drew us to booking with them over other commercial companies in the area. Evan our guide was so awesome. He made jokes, filled us in on the area and made us feel so safe the whole time. All the staff was wonderful, super kind, funny, and welcoming. Overall we spent 2 hours on the river and we had a blast. Wetsuits, booties, helmets, and life jackets were included. We stopped along the way down the river to go cliff jumping as well which was so fun!! I would definitely book with this company again in the future. 10/10 experience from all aspects.
We had 7 people on 2 rafts on Numbers…and both guides, Brett and Alex, were amazing!! We have been with this company several times and they are professional, super safe, knowledgeable…and just a great crew to go with! We even had a first timer who was nervous and he had all kinds of trust in Brett by rapid #2! Highly recommend!!
First time rafter, and I had wonderful time! Would highly recommend using this company for your first time rafting and for people who have rafted before. The team here is very easy to get along with. They also prioritize your safety and are always making sure you are having a good time. Especially our guide Brett! Brett’s personality is big and engaging. You will not go wrong having Brett as your guide on the Arkansas River.
Best guide company on the Arkansas! Repeat customer. Pleasant staff. Made our trip so enjoyable. Alex was a great guide. Such a pretty trip in Colorado. The views were amazing when we weren’t paddling for our lives. Haha, not really. Going over the rapids backwards is FUN! Numbers is no joke and thrilling. Busy 6ish miles of river for us paddlers. Thanks again.
We had a wonderful experience rafting Brown’s Canyon today with Alex as our guide! He was knowledgeable, fun, and skilled. As first time whitewater rafters, we always felt like we were in good hands and felt well-prepared before we even left for the river. He seemed well-known and respected on the river and made sure to check on other rafters who were pulled over and seemed shaken up after a rough rapid. We learned so much about the river, terrain, rafting etiquette, and more. He was great with our youngest who now wants to be a rafting guide! :) We hated for the experience to be over and are already planning our next trip. We will definitely choose them again and ask for Alex. The drivers taking us to and from the river were incredible too, giving us great tips on where to eat and what to do in the area. Great hospitality all around!
Went on a full-day Browns Canyon rafting trip with Christian as our guide. It was an absolute blast! I grew up in Colorado and have rafted with several different outfitters over the years. This was by far my favorite outfitter I’ve gone with. They are a small company with excellent service and guides. They are knowledgeable about the area, ensured everyone had a great time, and really spent time getting to know the group. Christian made even difficult situations like getting stuck on a rock, a blast! Lunch is served on the full day trips… much like other outfitters. But unlike other outfitters, it wasn’t just a basic deli sandwich… these guys cooked up warm chicken fajitas with chips and salsa, on a beach right on the side of the river. Me, my husband, and two boys (15 and 12) had an incredible experience. Book with these guys… you won’t be disappointed!
We had soooo much fun doing this rafting trip with Brett as our guide. He was great. Very fun and knowledgeable. He also made us feel very safe since we had some people nervous for their first time. We will 100% be going back and requesting him as our guide again next season!!
It was my first time rafting ever! Jay was a great and I had a lot of fun. We even stopped by a cliff and I did my first cliff jump ever. It was a very memorable experience and I really want to do it again! Definitely recommend!

Anya was amazing pilot! At no point did we ever feel in danger and she was awesome at explaining what we needed to do to safely navigate the rapids! It was my wife's first time rafting as well as my 9 year-old and my 11 year-old. We were still able to get through the rapids and have a great time with the expert guidance of Anya. I love that this company was a smaller company and didn't have a giant bus with 40 people on it and seven rafts on a trailer. This was a much more personalized experience where you got to actually talk to the people that own and run the company rather than a tourist attraction.
My family and I found Dvorak expeditions on our trip to Colorado. We’ve always wanted to go white water rafting and this was a great experience and good for people of all levels. The whole experience felt very personal and all the staff were very friendly. Emily (on the right) was our guide and she did a great job maneuvering us around the river as well as being very friendly. We got to have experiences you might not get at larger companies such as jumping off rocks into the river. Dvorak Expeditions was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun time.
We had a great time on the river with Emily and JP! Emily was super witty and fun and JP was extremely knowledgeable about the area. The Browns canyon 3/4 run was perfect for us. We left at 10am and basically had the river to ourselves. It was so nice! And the class 3 rapids were fun and just enough for my 2 kids 11 and 12. The wetsuit and booties were worth it for $10, and the photos were a little pricey at $60, but I bought them because they were fun action shots. The after hours woman can be a little snarky, but once you’re there, the woman helping is a gem and I highly recommend the entire experience! The owner, Bill, actually was one of the first to be licensed to white water raft down the river, and he has been active with keeping it amazing. If you’re wondering whether or not to do it, I’d say just pick this one! You won’t regret it.
Very easy to book and great customer service! Our guide, Jason explained all the safety tips very well. Beautiful scenery along the Brown's canyon. All four of us really enjoyed the half day trip.
Our first time rafting, wouldn’t have had it any other way! Dvorak Expeditions is an amazing place with amazing people, shoutout to Jason and Beau for some fantastic rides!
Our family of 4 rafted Browns Canyon and had such a good time. Matt was our guide and he was wonderful. We felt very safe and that we were in good hands the entire time. Our children told us this was their favorite rafting trip they’ve done so far. We also really appreciated that Dvorak Expeditions felt smaller and didn’t have that big corporate feel like some of the other rafting companies. Thanks for a fun day and great memories!
White water rafting was on my bucket list and I couldn't have been more pleased and impressed with Dvorak Kayak and Rafting Expeditions. We had a great time, and Jason was an incredible guide, who was very knowledgeable about rafting as well has the river and canyon. We felt very safe and had the best time. I would definitely book them again if I was ever in the area again. Thanks for a great time!
We had a great time on our trip! Beau was amazing, be explained the nature, rocks and rivers to us! He even pulled me out of the water with no hesitation when I decided to tip out 🤣: Thanks a million! Team KickAss!!

Beautiful short and easy hike. There was a lot of snow and ice, but the trail was easy to follow thanks to other people who came before us. The sound of the water was so relaxing. It looked beautiful all iced like that!
Very easy hike with beautiful views. Some incline and scrambling if you wanna get a nice view of the falls.
Nice and quick hike.Took me 35 minutes ...great morning cardio🙂
Beautiful sites with the waterfall at the end of your ascent. Not too difficult of a climb for most people, we saw young and old on our trip up and back down. There are multiple paths in some spots to take you closer to the water or ip on higher ground. Bring your cameras because there's are many good photo opportunities the entire length of the trail with the surrounding mountain peaks in all directions. We saw a some wildlife, mainly squirrels and birds along with one snake.
Very nice walk up to a beautiful waterfall with ice cold water. We walked further than the actual platform until we reached the waterfall. It’s very stony but there are small ways to walk on. Went with kids and dogs, it was possible and lovely. Beautiful views on Mt Antero.
One of my favorite stops my friends and I visited during our trip to Colorado last year. As can be surmised by the photos, we visited it during the winter months. Hiking up to the top and seeing the falls frozen over was a sight, as was the view back down to the bottom. Highly recommended!
Gorgeous short 1 mile hike and very inviting for family with little kids! We even stumbled upon a young moose grazing in the distance. BUT......after talking to locals we were told they were surprised that the park was re-opened. A few years back a family of five was killed by a rock slide here!! No mention of it anywhere, so I was shocked its back open to the public with nothing else warning us than the standard rock slide picture at the beginning of the trail! Be aware, avoid this after any rainfall! Who knows how often the Colorado Parks and Wildlife offices checks the rockwalls for any loose boulders ready to roll.....?
The trail to get up was really nice. My first time hiking, but would gladly do it again. Bring some friends and drinks a beer at the top, cheers 🍻.

This place was very cool and fun for the family! We decided to go to this ghost town to get some time out of the day. It looked and was cool to learn about! The old buildings inside were old and fun with some interesting stuff to read about! The General Store also had some cool merch you can get before you leave the ghost town. Get one of their Blue Bunny desserts from the store as well, since they were delicious! Overall, a fun family friendly place to go in the mountains to get some time out!
This is a fun little general store. Lots of antiques and other things to peruse and potentially purchase. The management was helpful and gave me good advice about the area. I picked up a couple postcards and almost bought a t-shirt there. St. Elmo is a fun little ghost town to explore. There are vault toilets near the schoolhouse but they're in poor condition. There are other toilets a bit East at a parking area.
Great little store packed full of stuff. Get an ice cream and a little something to take home. Also can’t beat buying some sunflower seeds for the chipmunks. For the most part everything is a little pricey, but I don’t think they have any choice. Considering the location and the operating season they have. Take the time to support this business and keep them open. This has become a yearly tradition over the past decade. I hope they are able to continue for many more
St. Elmo' in general is really awesome. The buildings are well preserved and there is a lots to see. The chipmunks are so cute and fun to feed. And only 50 cents for a bag of food! The only down sides were that there is no bathroom or food, which is tough with young kiddos. If you're going, I would suggest going to the bathroom just before you get there and bringing lunch! It is really amazing though and we will be back!
St. Elmo, in general, is a nice little place nestled at 10k feet. It's worth coming to see a place almost frozen in time in the clean mountain air. Definitely fun for little kids to hand feed the local chipmunks.
Fun stop. The General Store is fun to go to. I got some cool one of a kind iron cast works for a Christmas present. The drive to here was even better. You wind through forests and a white water rapid river. The air smells so clean and of pine trees, it's wonderful.
Chris and Nora the owners treat you like family. Every year they bring in different tshirt designs and fun things to buy. Love feeding the chipmunks
We always have such a great time coming up to St. Elmo in the fall! Seeing the ghost town, snagging some souvenirs or an antique, and feeding the chipmunks. Chipmunk feed is $0.50 and worth every penny. I'm grateful they keep the old town accessible and maintained for visitors.

I mean, come on, this place is amazing. Informational video and talk, free fish feeding, and an overall blast for the whole family. I think the kiddos enjoyed it the most but it was a close call because we all really enjoyed it. Would be back many times over!
We had a blast here!! Our Airbnb host recommended this place, as we have a 3 yo, 5 yo, and 7 yo. It was a hit for all three, and my husband and I loved it, too! The volunteer staff were great with our kids and very knowledgeable and friendly. They had a fun art activity which our kids loved! We each got a bucket of food and had a great time walking around feeding the trout. This is a must if you have young kids!!
Free buckets of fish food to feed the fish ! It's too much fun, a must-see place for kids to learn about a fish hatchery. Free 10 minute video and good info !
We needed an afternoon activity and I suggested going to the hatchery to my group of 7. It was an absolute HIT! Volunteer Jane Powell is so kind, knowledgeable and engaged with the children like she’d known them for life. The children adored her! She gave them a craft to paint a trout, the kids loved it!! She gave us buckets of free food to feed the fish. We had no idea what a thrill it is to feed a million rainbow trout! The trout were thrilled to see us, too. We loved it so much, we came a second day! Jane will tell you where in the raceways to see the trophy fish. Those blew my mind, they’re monster rainbow trout. We will come back our next Colorado vacation!! What a very surprisingly fun activity!
Beautiful scenery and fun for the whole family! We were given 3 large buckets of fish food that kept my toddler and 8 month old (not to mention us adults) entertained for at least an hour! The fish hatchery attendants also chatted with us about how everything works and we learned a lot!
Best Best Best fish hatchery!!!!!! Jerry and Dave are so kind and almost always there to great you and share a story. One of the best childhood memories I have.
A really nice place. Amazing number of fish are raised here to stock the waters in the area. A very nice staff member gave us a couple of buckets of feed for the fish.
Super friendly staff and always fun. Highly recommended stop on the way to St. Elmo. Very low-key. Most places would charge for fish food - here, they are happy to put you to work with a full bucket to feed the fish.

This place is awesome! Thank you for making it kid friendly- my son loved it and the guy behind the counter was so kind! My son got a beautiful amber necklace for mom and some pyrite complete with a Gilman Colorado history lesson
Rockhounders paradise! Talked to the owner about rocks for awhile. She was super nice and informative. Bought some great books. Pretty much any tool you need is here. Huge mineral and gem collection. Highly recommend.
Better late than never... During our USA Southwest tour this June, we really wanted to visit the Rock Doc Shop. Unfortunately, our itinerary meant we'd be there on a Wednesday – the shop is normally closed on that day. I contacted Cindy, who responded quickly, and yes, she was in the shop especially for us on Wednesday morning, and we were able to admire her treasures and even buy two stones to bring back to Austria. Unfortunately, due to weight restrictions on airline luggage, we couldn't bring anything larger. Thank you so much, Cindy, it was a pleasure to meet you and your wonderful shop.
An authentic rock shop and very helpful team. This is one of those delightful and authentic hidden gems (pun intended). The prices are very reasonable. If you or any of your kids love rocks this is a must-stop for you.
Wow this place is fabulous! I stopped by looking for some gifts, and it did not disappoint. The selection was just too good and I struggled to decide, but the owner was so patient and helpful. I will definitely be back next time I’m road tripping through Colorado!
Awesome local place and the guy behind the counter was more than helping. I was there for a specific piece I was looking for and before the front door even closed he had a display out of exactly what I was looking for. A person who runs a jewelry shop in Twin Lakes Colorado recommended this place so I drove from Twin Lakes and it was well worth the quick trip. Very affordable and TONS of merchandise, stones, gems novelties and the whole other side of the shop was packed for off what looked like professional stone sculpting equipment, grinders, lolichers all the equipment needed to hunt rocks and gems on your own. Super cool place and I will be going back next time I'm in the area. I recommended this place to my friends in Grand Junction who are rockaholics and one of those places that is truly a diamond in the ruff. Go check it out!
Great place to stop! If you’re looking for gold panning supplies, rocks, gems, information, they have it covered. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Happy to have found this shop! Thank you so much.
Class act even after they were closed. They made sure that I was taken care of plan on actually visiting the store and getting a good look at their inventory but these guys are good.

That's a tough long hike. The TH is easily accessible, and there is lots of parking. Once you start pushing to the first peak, Mt Shavano, the trail not well marked, and it's choose your own path
Beautiful but strenuous hike. Lower trails easy to find but early in the season it can be hard to find one that doesn’t have you walking on the fragile alpine plant line life, so be careful in route selection to do as little damage as possible.
Overall a good trailhead to start your ascent to Shavano and Tab. If you’re going to do Shavano, do Tab!!! There’s a toilet at the trailhead, so rest assured you can have your morning coffee while getting to the trailhead. However, finish your morning coffee before embarking on the long dirt road to this trailhead. It’s rather bumpy, but I’d drive up there in a Corolla or RAV4. Probably wouldn’t take a Miata. Also, plenty of parking when I arrived at 6:30 and there’s overflow parking. However, just arrive the night before and car camp. Tons of dispersed camping sites along to long dirt road up to the trailhead. Sorry, didn’t take any pictures of the trailhead. It’s a typical trailhead. Enjoy the hike and cows along the way! BTW, how the hell do you ride/hike a mtn bike up there?!!!
Long trail. River rock makes the trail rough. The road to trail head is very rutted, especially near Loop C - save your car take the loop to avoid the roughest spot of the drive.
This trail was rocky and chunky nearly the whole way to the top! Beautiful aspen grove with flowers at the bottom though! And incredible views from the summit!!
It's two 14ers so if your not expecting to hike and exercise, probably not your cup of tea. The views are gorgeous and the hike is a lot a fun. A good challenge with the elevation gain though not as long mileage as other 14ers. Plenty of camping spots on the first service road on the way up.
Awesome, but a grind at my age 60+. You summit Shavano twice to do both. On final descent a rescue copter is pictured. Do not know the rescue details. About a 10 hour round trip for me including 1 hour of breaks.
A unique experience to hike 2 14ers in one day. Beautiful Trail. Lots of Smoke from Wildfires made it incredibly difficult to hike... especially breathe. ❤🌲🔥⛰🔥🤭🔥🌲❤

Best vacation I've ever had, feels like summer camp for adults and kids. The property is so beautiful and the terrain varies on all of the horseback rides. There is so much to do and the schedule accommodates lots of different interests. The best part is getting to know the staff and the other guests. By the time we left we had created such strong bonds with the other guests and had a great time getting to know each other. The staff is incredible! They work so hard to make your vacation as relaxing and fun as possible.
Some of my best memories were made here. They teach you how to actually ride and cars for a horse, rather than staying in one boring line, you can free ride after you get the hang of it. One of the most friendly staff and made everyone feel like family. There is a barn with table games like ping-pong. The rooms are amazing, and the trading post has reasonable prices. They know all of the hot spots. I’m not going to spoil what they do or where they take you. They also offer trips to go white water rafting on REAL rapids or a trip to the hot springs. The food was nothing short of gourmet and prepared us for the fun filled day. They bring someone in to teach the travelers how to fly fish and even have their own little pond you can fish in. Bait is available. Hope this was helpful in planning your next vacation!
Loved our week long stay. Altitude is no joke, acclimatize if you can. Tom knows horses and gave excellent instruction and advice. Sue keeps the ranch running and beautiful with flowers. The staff were enthusiastic and helped make our stay effortless. Loved the appetizer happy hour, where we all ended up sharing various libations, the views and each other's company.
here are 4 main categories for evaluating a ranch vacation, riding, activities, accommodations, and dining. Each category had a few aspects that were very good, a few that were mediocre, and in our opinion more than a fair share of pretty disappointing. The riding had some beautiful scenery but was overly regimented. Other reviews have details about that. The activities off the ranch were great, but on the ranch, not so much. However, the outside entertainment they brought in was very good. The dining service was awkward. Some of the foods were quite good, but others were not so great including heat-and-serve type items. At times it was hard to find seating together for my family of 6. The beds were comfortable, but the bathrooms were unacceptable at this price point, peeling paint and vinyl, unimaginably tiny, and most importantly, unventilated. Whatever smells are in your tiny bathroom will be a few feet from your partner's head when you open the door at least in the Pioneer Lodge we stayed in (which we were told we'd have to ourselves, but as it turns out was shared with staff who wake up in the 5 o'clock hour and like their snooze buttons). We outlined a more detailed email of our concerns to the owners who were responsive which we appreciated. Hence the three stars. Hopefully, they will make some changes for future guests. Also, be sure to consider the altitude. We were told it wouldn't be a big deal, but coming from sea level, we super-hydrated and spent a night to acclimate in Denver, but it wasn't enough. Most of us had some discomforts due to the altitude, the main one was difficulty sleeping which lasted the whole week. One other note, we packed very light for a family of 6 because we planned to use the guest laundry. You won’t find out until you get there, that there is a $10 charge per load to do your own laundry.
I highly recommend coming here with your family! The week is packed with amazing things to do all week! The owners, Tom and Sue, are hard working and incredibly accommodating in making sure your stay is memorable! Me and my daughter made great friends!! We loved it!
This place is an amazing Dude Ranch for everyone! Spectacular views and experiences of a life time. It was pretty spectacular to ride a horse in the Colorado mountains ⛰ for a week, many amazing sunsets, picnic lunches, hay ride, archery, talented music in the lodge, square dancing or line dancing on the deck, hummingbirds, fishing and after riding soak in a warm hot tub. There is so much more!
If you're looking for true family-style hospitality and a mountain trail-riding experience like no other, Elk Mountain is for you. Our stay was truly the best vacation of our lives, thanks to Tom and Sue and their absolutely professional and yet fun-loving and hilarious staff. We are forever grateful and can't wait to come back again.
My granddaughter, sister, nieces and I had a absolutely stellar time. The ranch is in one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado. I rode my horse everyday and loved the ride, the care of the responsible hard working staff and wranglers, the views and the outdoors. There were so many things to do from eating great food, getting to know new people, listening to live music, shooting, bow and arrows, fishing, games, farm pets to play with and a peaceful quiet place to sleep. We were ages 11 to 70 and could not have enjoyed the experience more. There are nice activities for the younger set as well. Tom and Sue are salt of the earth, hard working, friendly and take extreme care to make sure you have a chance to enjoy this beauitful place including breathtaking star show everynight.
