Cloudland Canyon State Park is absolutely scenic and well worth the trip. It’s only about a 30-minute drive from Chattanooga and an easy hop from Rock City and Ruby Falls, so you can make a full day of it. The Waterfalls Trail is the star, leading to Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls. Be ready for some exercise, 600 steps down to Cherokee and another 250ish to Hemlock. The hike back up can be intense (rough on the knees). So, bring some trekking poles. But, the canyon views and forest setting make every step worthwhile. When I visited in late September, the water flow was light at both falls. Spring or after heavy rains is the best time to see them in full force. Even so, the trails, overlooks, and sheer beauty of the park make it a memorable stop. For those craving more adventure, there are longer trails that take you deeper into the canyon. This is a must-see if you’re in Northwest Georgia or Chattanooga area.
This place was an experience I’m really glad I had. The hike down to the bottom was surprisingly easy, with stairs at every change in elevation. The waterfalls inside the canyon are beautiful, and the scenic views from the top are absolutely incredible. This review only covers the day use areas and the hiking trail down to the waterfalls deep in the canyon. I went in without expectations and didn’t even look at a trail map beforehand — I just wanted to see the waterfalls. The descent feels like thousands of stairs, and according to my watch, it’s nearly a 300-meter drop with a round trip of about 3 miles. The climb back up was definitely a workout, but the views and waterfalls made every sweaty step back out worth it. It’s impressive that the state of Georgia installed such an extensive stair system. There are several resting landings with benches along the way, which I definitely appreciated. See my pictures to get an idea of the stairs along the way. I’d highly recommend this park for anyone in decent health, solo hikers, or couples looking for an active, scenic date. The round trip to the bottom waterfall and back took me about 2½ hours — including plenty of time for photos and just taking in the beauty of it all. Absolutely worth the trip. Highly recommend.
Cloudland Canyon offers beautiful fall foliage views and plenty of scenic spots to enjoy. Parking was convenient which made the visit smooth from the start. The park has many enjoyable features, especially during the autumn season when the colors are stunning. (waterfall area was dry, though) There was a park ranger in front of building— he was kind and engaging, especially with children and families, offering helpful information and creating a welcoming atmosphere. It was good to see such positive interaction. However, some areas on the trail to the waterfall need maintenance. Certain stairs and railings felt loose and wobbly, and there were wooden sections with holes that seemed potentially dangerous. It would be great if these parts were repaired to ensure safety for all visitors. Overall, it’s a good place to experience nature, but a few safety improvements and some renovations in and around the main building (I noticed it's on going around the main overlook) are needed on the waterfall path and main building. I will probabaly come back in another season.
Truly a stunning state park. The views from the main overlook are unmatched. The main overlook is also accessible for all, which is great. We hiked the waterfalls trail while here. Be prepared for a leg workout. 600 steps down into the canyon and 600 to get back up. The falls were just a trickle in late October, but still very beautiful and peaceful to be near. Worth the hike. And all the fall colors were unmatched in their beauty. Wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water and maybe walking sticks to make it easier for the trail portion before / after the stairs.
🟩 Breathtaking canyon overlooks and varied scenery 🟩 Excellent for photographers and nature lovers 🟩 Quiet, less crowded than major parks Cloudland Canyon State Park is a standout for anyone seeking dramatic mix of sweeping canyon views, beautiful horizons, mossy gorges, and the quiet rhythm of forested trails. If you’re planning a Georgia outdoor getaway, it’s a worthy addition to your itinerary. We were visiting for a wedding and did not get to do a lot but what we did was and what we saw was absolutely beautiful! 10/10
This past Sunday, we visited Cloudland Canyon Park and had an incredible experience! We tackled two beautiful trails: the Waterfall Trail and the Hemlock Falls Trail. Both offered stunning views, but the Waterfall Trail was particularly challenging with over 600 steps. It was a strenuous hike, and we took a few breaks to catch our breath, but the breathtaking views at the top made every step worthwhile. The park's natural beauty is truly unforgettable, and we can't wait to come back!
Absolutely loved visiting this place! The fall colors are breathtaking, and it’s just as beautiful in the summer. I’d highly recommend taking the West Rim Trail and walking down the stairs to the waterfall—it’s totally worth it. Pack a picnic lunch and grab a spot at one of the many lookouts to relax and soak in the views. Such a peaceful and memorable experience!
Stayed for a walk-in camp at campsite 16 in mid-October. It’s a bit of a haul from the parking area, but that distance buys great privacy—sites aren’t right on top of each other. Hiking was excellent and the weather was perfect. Trees were still mostly green and the waterfalls had no flow during my visit. If you’re chasing autumn colors (and better waterfall chances), aim for late October into early November. Overall, a peaceful stay and great trails—would come back.

I went hang gliding at Lookout Mountain Flight Park for my birthday with my siblings and had the TIME OF MY LIFE! I will be thinking about this experience on my death bed. Jay was my instructor and he was AWESOME!! My brother and sister loved their instructor Rich too! The whole staff was wonderful, friendly, and professional. I felt very safe the entire time. It was evident that this business prioritizes safety. Can’t wait for next time!!
What an amazing experience with Dalton as my pilot. He was super cool and very knowledgeable about the flight, which made me feel at ease. From the moment you take off, it's an exhilarating feeling of flying like a bird with beautiful views all around. He let me fly the glider, and we did some fun roller-coaster dives, which will definitely get your heart pumping. Top notch service all around from all the people working there!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G — A must-do experience! Our first time hang-gliding—and we cannot rave enough! Having tried paragliding and parasailing before, we can say with confidence: every single penny was absolutely WORTH IT. We chose this thrill to celebrate our wedding anniversary(Clearly, our real-life adventures weren’t wild enough—so we took to the skies ). Jokes aside, everything from booking to flying was seamless. The entire staff was incredibly friendly, informative, and made us feel totally at ease. Special shout-out to our awesome pilots, Tim and Ian! 🙌 Their expertise and warmth took the experience to the next level! Few Tips: -Book your tickets online. -Arrive at least an hour early—the check-in and documentation office is about 10 minutes away from the launch site. -You’ll receive detailed info via email, and they’re super prompt in keeping you updated, especially for any weather-related changes. We’re already planning round two—because once just isn’t enough!
Highly recommend! I did this as a surprise for my dad’s birthday. We both did tandem flights and it was incredible! Our pilots were wonderful and really tailored the experience to each of us. Rich (my pilot), made me feel less nervous and kept the dad jokes coming throughout the flight. I would 110% do this again, just with some nausea meds on board 🙃.
Great experience, guide and everyone at the station was great, knowledgeable and very friendly. They explain the all trip and showed videos. We did the 1500 paragliding, we will definitely return do it.. The only thing doesn't make much sense is why you need to drive to the top of the mountain to be redirected to the bottom. Other than that was great!
We scheduled the Eagle Package as a family of three with my dad who is 68, my brother, and my daughter who is 18. We arranged to spend two consecutive weeks at the flight park with the goal of enjoying family time while learning a new hobby together. The best case scenario was to leave with H2 ratings and be foot launching from the top, and we planned the trip so it would end with the Wingman competition. It turned out to be my favorite vacation yet. Even if you do not want to fly yourself, simply being there and soaking in the atmosphere is an incredible experience. You do not have to take lessons in a two week block either. Some people move faster, while others spread it out over time, which can be easier on your body. Staying on site for two weeks was awesome. The LZ community felt like our kind of people. They were welcoming, fun, and full of encouragement. When you are there long enough you get to know everyone, including instructors on the hills, pilots at the top, tandem students, and families in the LZ. That sense of community makes learning to hang glide even better. We also brought our dogs. The RV park and LZ are dog friendly, and although our pups were a little unruly at first, by the end of the trip they were running around with all the other dogs who came for Wingman weekend. They added something special to the whole experience. Personally, I pulled a muscle and came down sick during the trip, but it was still my favorite vacation ever. My dad progressed to the big hill and will soon be cleared for the cliff. My daughter and her uncle both earned their H2s and even competed in Wingman. If you are doing back to back hill flights, I cannot emphasize enough how important stretching is, especially if you are older or pushing hard every day. My dad has his heart set on foot launching, but aerotow is also a fantastic option that is easier on the body. Beyond the flying we enjoyed just spending time around the flight park. One of our instructors, Scott, was a great local guide. He pointed us toward amazing food and fun outings, and we loved exploring Chattanooga and Trenton. All around it was a perfect experience. We will definitely be back.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Life-Changing Flight – Thanks to Tim! I cannot recommend Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding enough! From the moment I arrived, the entire experience was seamless, professional, and filled with good energy—but the true highlight was my instructor, Tim. Tim was calm, knowledgeable, and made me feel completely at ease, even though this was my first time hang gliding. He walked me through every step, made sure I was comfortable and confident, and somehow turned my nerves into pure excitement before we even left the ground. And the flight itself? Absolutely breathtaking. Floating high above the trees with the mountains stretching out in every direction was one of the most peaceful and awe-inspiring things I’ve ever done. It felt like flying in a dream. If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure with incredible views and top-notch instructors, this is the place. Ask for Tim—he’s the best!
We had sooooooo much fun!!! Loved all 3000 feet! My pilot was a cutie too❤️ our daughters gave us this for a Christmas gift… I highly recommend …
