Driving south on the Blue Ridge Parkway, we came to the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center. We are so glad we stopped. There’s a nice little museum of mountain life, clean restrooms, great information and a gift shop. They also have a self guided walking path with some really wonderful cabins, barns and other examples of early mountain life.
The Park Rangers were engaging and informed. They were promoting motorcycle safety enthusiastically. The Ranger we were speaking to took the time to mark the parkway map with all closures and recommended re routes. Extremely helpful and friendly. A highlight of our trip.
Very freindly staff at visitor center. Hike is strenuous but lovely and totally worth the view
We recommend stopping at this visitor center for information and recommendations for the north end of the Parkway. The "village" which is an easy walk from the visitor center, is also worth spending time visiting. Good signage for learning about the buildings.
Took a long motorcycle trip on a weekday when it was not busy. Beautiful. Speed limit is 45 so you can take your time. Lots of overlooks. My wife and I spent our honeymoon traveling it almost 50 years ago.
We stopped in before the visitor center was open so we weren't able to go inside, but the bathrooms were thankfully open. (We drove through just after 9am so not sure if the bathrooms opening early is a regular thing.) The center is a cute little building with signs and history everywhere. We did not stick around long since we were on a schedule but I hope to come back to explore more. There is a couple trails to hike on but again, we had no time to walk them so I can't speak on them. The parking lot and bathrooms were clean when we visited. Picnic tables and garbage cans were in the area for use. The parking lot was decent sized but I can see it filling up quickly on busy days.
The visitor center features a little history as well as some items for sale, such as books, toys and t-shirts. Public bathrooms are located there as well. The historical cabins/cottages are right next to it with a bare minimal distance to walk- for those of us who are not fans of long walks - this is perfect! Due to the fact of not being able to walk much, I was disappointed that there weren't any benches to rest- not even by the cabins. The little self guided tour is FREE. 😊 Past these cabins is a hiking trail that goes into the woods and up the mountain - if you like longer hikes. We were there to listen to the Bluegrass life music, but apparently it was canceled and nobody really knew why. Staff at the visitor center told us that there is a new park ranger and a turn around in staff- sounded to me that it was an organizational issue....
We visited in late May 2023 (memorial day weekend). It was Friday around noon and it was pretty busy while we were there. Lots of people coming in and out of the visitor center. We think they had just opened that week for the season. They had a small exhibit area inside the visitor center and it was well staffed with multiple rangers. The area outside had shaded areas and bathrooms. There was a hiking path outside to see old farmstead buildings that had been moved onsite and also our kids did the junior ranger program for the blue ridge parkway. Apparently each visitor center has it's own mini junior ranger which is slightly different. We were able to have them completed the badge requirement in about 30-45 mins. If you completed 4 visitor centers there is a patch and then a pin if you do all 10. At each location you complete the activity they give you a sticker that goes into the book. The park store also located inside the visitor had a great selection of park specific merch for it's size. Focus on humpback rocks. Lots of pins, patches, hiking medallions, key chains shirts and hats etc. They had snacks to. The National Park passport stamps are located on the left as you walk in. They have 3 different stamps.

There are a few better places on this section of the parkway that I somewhat prefer for a few reasons but they are more difficult to find and I'm sorry I would like to keep it that way. They are much more difficult and dangerous for a view as well. I'm not being selfish but some people decide to do things like bring spray paint and party. Then they leave their trash and "artwork" in places where people may not see them doing it. Ravens Roost is a fairly large area for parking and viewing the valley and rolling mountains. It does have some very amazing views even from your vehicle. There are small areas to walk to on rock and dirt trails as well as the paved and walled area. It's also a popular place for repelling, climbing and hang gliding. I had a close family member who has passed away in the last year and this was his favorite place to climb in the area as a younger man. That will always make this a very special place to me. I am not in any way suggesting anyone do these things as they can make you dead if you do not know what you are doing. Sometimes even when you do. There is a picnic table on the hill behind the parking area. As everyone posts pictures of the same views, the pictures I am adding are from there. Please take any trash with you or dispose of it properly. Please don't be afraid to pick up something if a dirt bag leaves his cliff bar wrapper on the ground. This helps these beautiful places stay that way. Lastly, keep the spray paint at your house to paint on your own walls if you must tell someone who you love with Krylon. Enjoy!
A lovely place enroute from DC to Charlotte or revert. Lots of viewing points or overlooks, but this one presents a better parking and move around. Throughly enjoyable on a sunny/rainy day depending on your preference.
My husband and I got married here last year and we came back to visit for our 1st anniversary. Very popular spot so it gets busy but the view is breathtaking everytime. Thank you to the couple who took our photo and prayed for us on our marriage.
Probably the best overlook we have been to while in the area. The sunsets are gorgeous!
Gorgeous spot along the parkway. This spot is perfect for watching the sunset. Plenty of places to sit along the rock ledge. Sunrise is pretty but not the best view.
This is such an iconic spot and no matter the weather or time of year, lends a gorgeous backdrop.
The Blue Ridge Parkway was closed due to "Winter weather advisory" so we drove through Wintergreen Resort which was a very long steep drive, the GPS took me to a residential neighborhood where I was driving in circles for a long time before I ran into a kind local gentleman who pointed me in the right direction. I will not recommend this to the general public because you will be parking on private property but the view was breathtaking and the silence was heavenly. Another overlook was open that will give you an eagle view of the ski slopes of Wintergreen.
One of my favorite spots for my clients with all of the stunning views, minus the hike. Highly recommend this overlook for the best sunset views, picnics, and more. It can get pretty packed in there most days when there’s beautiful weather, but there’s a trail off to the side that leads down the front of the wall that offers more privacy and stunning views as well.

Great (9mile) hike around the entire area. Great sized camping spots easily fits 2 tents and could accommodate a 3rd. The lake is clean and beautiful. No wood or ice is sold on site but they have sellers a short 15 minute drive away and the bundles are big and cheap. It's a great drive out and in with lots of overlooks. I only went here because my favorite spot was booked up and I'm happy I got to see it first hand. If you hike out to the falls pack food and water. It's an expert hike. You can drive to the nearby parking spots to cut hikes in half for beginners. I will definitely be comming back. As too bee expected you are in the mountains so plan accordingly. Limited cell service. If you hike on the trails you get spotty service which is good considering you're in THE WILDERNESS. Well done rangers and staff at Sheranado Lake.
Absolutely beautiful scenic RV camp site, full hook-ups, large firepit, bear proof food storage box, picnic table, large distance between RV sites and very nice egg pebble gravel, which was awesome after raining you don't track mud into your RV. This was one of the most pristine condition RV camp sites I have stayed at. The bathrooms were quite clean and there was a shower. Lots of grassy areas for dogs and extremely dog friendly. We stayed over nght in "C-17, it was a great location, it would be a great RV site for a vacation. The camp ground volunteer host was terrific. The only reason I didnt provide 5 stars is the entire area was a dead zone for any communication. NO CELL SERVICE, and too many trees for the Starlink internet to work. Beautiful drive getting there!
Great picnic by the lake spot. Great swimming in the lake spot. Great hike around the lake spot. Great camping in the woods spot. Great playing in the creek spot.
Great area for a family. Campsites are big and clean. Enjoyed the swimming area and fishing opportunities.
Very well maintained and good for picnic or bbq. The lake is clean and there’s an island in the middle. Pretty colorful in Fall.
There’s a short (1 mile) most flat loop trail around the lake which is fun for a quick hike. If you’re not into swimming/fishing, it’s probably not worth going out of your way to come here.
Important - there is NO cell service! One side of the lake is for fishing, the other has lots of picnic tables, a bath house and a sandy beach area. Perfect for family picnics. I personally love the off season to enjoy the views in peace and quiet. It is absolutely beautiful. Perfect backdrop for photography-
Big update: They accept cards to pay for the entrance fee which is still the same $8 💃🏽 imp information to know (after visit June 2024) Another update: Earlier is better during weekends, the lake will be cleaner, less packed, and the restrooms will be cleaner too. ⬇️ (updated after a rainy day) I encourage everyone to visit this little heaven! Super peaceful, beautiful, clean, organised area. We camp there one night, and went to the lake spent all the day between swimming and lounging in picnic area. I used the shower, was amazing. Loop trail all around the lake is wonderful (moderate). And those are important information to know: 1- Camp bathroom has free shower too (no coins system), clean and roomy. 2- NO phone signal in all the recreation area, I read a review for site C04 it has signal = internet in case you need it. 3- No shop to buy anything, so be equipped for everything, just a gift shop it has souvenirs, and expensive. We bought 2 cups for $33 just because we forgot to bring ours with us. And the nearest gas station is not always open. (6 miles from the park ). 4- Online booking only, you can’t book on spot. 5- No sheltered picnic are (if you thinking of grilling at a rainy day)
