Old Westbury Gardens is such a beautiful spot! The mansion and the grounds are absolutely stunning, and it feels like stepping into another time. The gardens are really well kept, and there are so many different areas to explore. The Mansion history is really neat too. You can easily spend a few hours or all day just wandering. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and also great for photos. The staff are friendly, and the whole place has a really welcoming feel. Our curator was amazing too. It’s a perfect for a walk, a picnic, or just a quiet day out.
Beautiful mansion, so much history inside. It Was built for the Phipps family. So much land, so much trees, plants and birds. The yard has 2 pools, one of them is huge, huge. There's a lake and pond with gold fishes, statues and plenty benches to sit on as you take in the wonderful site. I would say though that the outside needs a little tlc like the pool/fountain closest to the house the water is very murky, with huge amounts of leaves in it. The inside of the mansion has wonderful furnishings and has been well cared for. The guided tour was very informative, really enjoyed it. So much to say about this place, its wonderful part of history.
Today we visited the old Westbury gardens, we bought our tickets in advance (recommended) We arrived and immediately were welcomed by friendly staff. The first person I approached (we had a bag which were weren't aware is not allow) was Kenny Cleare. He offered to store our bag, free of charge. Secondly we met Joan who gave us a house tour. She has so much knowledge, and speaks with so much passion. You don't want her to stop talking. Everything in this house is an antique, beautiful and expensive. The history is so interesting. Kenny, I want to say Thank You for being so humble and so extremely friendly and helpful. We will never forget you. I pray that one day you will experience Cape Town, South Africa as your sister did. You will have an amazing experience. We were honored to meet you and Joan today. The amount of joy and passion you have for your work incredible. God Bless and we hope to see you soon , when we're back on Long Island, NY
Hello, my name is Gordon. I’m an established photographer in the Nassau area. I recently did a shoot at the beautiful and iconic Old Westbury Gardens. First, I would like to say that the professionalism of the staff was 5/5 — they were extremely helpful and did not disappoint on the day of the shoot. The location was lovely; from the scenic views to the beautifully potted flowers, I must say that pictures don’t do it justice — you need to see it for yourself. Here are some shots from the shoot. I hope you like them ❤️ If you need a photographer please feel free to contact me 💯🤗
As a Long Island Photographer, I highly recommend Old Westbury Gardens! We recently had the honor of documenting a surprise marriage proposal here, and the experience was truly exceptional, solidifying its status as one of the best locations for wedding portraits and proposals on Long Island. The grounds are simply stunning, offering endless backdrops—from the gorgeous architecture to the manicured gardens—making it an ideal wedding venue location for romantic, high-end photography. Crucially, the staff and coordination team were an absolute joy to work with. They are professional, responsive, and incredibly friendly, which ensures the day runs smoothly for the couple and for all vendors. This makes the job of a proposal photographer or wedding photographer much easier and more enjoyable. If you are a couple planning a Long Island wedding, a special photo session, or the perfect proposal, you must put Old Westbury Gardens at the top of your list. We can't wait to be back here soon!
Another beautiful October at the Old Westbury Gardens! Our docent, Lauren, was a wealth of knowledge and gave a wonderful tour! The entirety of the volunteer staff are so talented and lovely. We felt very welcomed and enjoyed our time in the gardens. Thank you for sharing this incredible space with us!
10/19/25 This historic home was, at one time, over 200 acres belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Phipps and their four children. Allow me to reiterate: this mansion, built during the waning years of the Gilded Age, and which had a full live-in staff, tennis courts, polo fields, and a working farm, was for a single family. (He made his fortune alongside Andrew Carnegie.) The grounds were absolutely beautiful and impeccably maintained, and the preservation and interpretation of history front and center in their recently added tour, Secrets of the Service Wing, which highlighted the individuals who ran the home. (Always far more interesting, don’t you think?) This included a look at the butler’s pantry, the silverware safe and linen cupboards (including original fabric imported from Ireland) even the wine cellar! Our guide, Cathy, was well-versed, knowledgeable, and personable. I highly recommend this special tour, but take note it's not offered everyday and needs advance ticket purchase. If you look at the included dining room photo, there are two paintings that really hammer home the wealth of this family: a Gainsborough and a Sargent!! That alone was worth the trip for me.
A Perfect Way to Spend a Summer Day! We had such a wonderful time visiting! From the moment we arrived, the staff was friendly and helpful—recommending we purchase tickets online for ease. The grounds were beautifully kept, with families and friends set up for picnics, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. We strolled through the expansive gardens, and the rose garden in particular was absolutely stunning, bursting with color and fragrance. Don’t miss the opportunity to tour the inside of the home as well—it’s rich in history and adds a whole new layer to the experience. A truly lovely way to spend a summer afternoon surrounded by nature, beauty, and a bit of the past.
