I brought a group of friends to Rodgers and was not disappointed. Beautiful country, excellent fishing, knowledgeable local guides, and delicious food. Supper easy to get there from Seattle using NW Seaplanes dock to dock service. We came back to the states with 120lbs of fish each!
Doug Rodgers is either senile, or a swindler, I’m not really sure which. It has been three years since I visited. My experience mirrored those of others .... seemingly intentional non-communication, indecipherable billing, wrangling with my credit card company to straighten it out and reverse some ghost charges. We left a day early and Doug couldn’t (wouldn’t ?) even give us a summary of our charges. At the time there was a dynamite female manager who was contemplating buying the resort from Doug Rodgers, and the potential for a turnaround seemed good. Apparently she too must have realized it was an insurmountable scam as it sounds to be unchanged. DO NOT SHARE YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION WITH THIS BUSINESS.
I fished with Rodgers last year at Esperanza, first time with Rodgers, first time in Canada. My advice is stay away from Doug. Once he gets your money communication is all but cut off, hard for questions and planning. The balance of your money will be charged to your card before you arrive giving you little recourse. Jim, our guide was wonderful and his wife Sue made excellent hosts. The recommendation to bring 120 qt coolers is all BS, you will not catch that many fish. The Canadian fisheries are under pressure just like they are in my PNW home that makes spending this much money not worth the cost. Study your possession limits and slot requirements if you do go.
I booked a trip with Rodgers for this year (Aug 20-24th) Rodgers billed my credit card $7100 August 6th (quoted 3000 each for 2 people - charge should of been 6000) August 9 I received an email from Rodgers saying the trip was cancelled due to the wild fires and a state of emergency. When I googled they had been under a state of emergency for six weeks. They were under a state of emergency when he billed my card. Three days later he cancels the trip. I reply about a credit at the time I received an email, no answer. No one is answering phones. A few days later I get an email that he does not know what to do , I replied the trip was cancelled please refund my money. Today, one week later I leave a voicemail (No one has answered since I made the reservation) I immediately get an email they will keep my money till next year (No thanks especially after reading other reviews) Or they will mail me a check....I guess now I sit and wait and wait for a refund. According to another man I spoke with on yelp review he never got his money back. It was VERY easy for Rodgers to charge my credit card but he cant issue a credit??? Scary!!!!
The lodge is definitely in need of updating. The rooms are clean and nice and the manager is friendly and efficient. Food was very good (and more than enough) though nothing spectacular. Boats are older and in some cases unsafe. Guide quality varied from excellent to poor. Some guides didn't clean their boats for the 5 days we were there, others cleaned them religiously. Location is good, fishing was pretty decent though weather was rough. Not sure I'd go back again.
I have fished 3 times in the past with them and it was good. They charged my credit card by "mistake" in June and didn't reverse charges. Promised the proverbial check in the mail. I too was booked for a trip 20-24 August which they cancelled. No word from them about a refund.
I want to give this -100 stars! I am a frequent traveler and an executive in the health care industry. I have never written a bad review in my life.... until now. I am writing this as an honest review to warn anyone who is interested in this place to be aware that this business has been suspended and they are unable to meet their operating capitol. I want to make sure no-one else falls victim to this scam. This is the single worst experience I have ever had. Please, DO NOT EVER BOOK A TRIP TO RODGERS FISHING LODGE!!! We booked a trip at the end of May and Doug the owner immediately charged the credit card for the full amount - about $7000 for a 3 day fishing trip for 4 people and that included the seaplane flights out to the lodge. We never received any booking confirmation, no receipt and no communication after that payment. About 10 days before the trip I called NW Seaplanes in Seattle (the company it says they use on the web site). I was told there was no reservation ever made for us. I called the lodge and spoke to the office manager, Dan who was friendly, but not too surprised to hear and did ask that Doug (the owner get in touch with us) A week later with phone calls and emails every day, we still had no flights that had been booked to the lodge. And still not a phone call fro Doug or anyone at the lodge with confirmation information. Today - I received an email asking us to change our flights from Denver to Seattle to Denver to Vancouver (5 days before we are to leave - we are supposed to buy another set of airline tickets to another city?!!) otherwise he suggested we drive from Seattle to Vancouver - a drive I have done before and it takes about 5 - 6 hours with traffic and border patrol)That would have used two of the days we had paid to fish. Still no phone call from Doug, rather tonight I received an email from him: "This is an incredibly hard email to write to you because it is all about the credit processor that we use which is called First Data Canada. Apparently there is a daily limit on the size of the deposits that we can make with First Data and yesterday we exceeded the daily limit and they put our account on hold until they can review these transactions. We have been doing over $400K a month with First Data and this is the first time that we were aware that these daily limit guide lines even existed. To make a long story short we are going to have to suspend our operations until this problem is resolved. This situation has put us in the very difficult position of not have sufficient working capital to carry on our business. We had no idea that this was coming and we apologize for the inconvenience that this is going to cause you. If you file a claim with your credit card company for the monies that you have paid to us you will be reimbursed in full. Again, we have been in this business for 37 years and everybody that has been touched by this unexpected situation will be fully reimbursed for the monies that they have paid to us. Your claim with your credit card company will be that you have paid for services that you have not received and you will be 100% reimbursed. Again I am really sorry for this situation but this is something that is out of my control.........thank you.............Doug Rodgers" So how will I revere the other monies I have spent - $700? Now I have time off work, airline and hotel reservations made that are not refundable 5 days before I was to leave for this fishing trip with my son. Words cannot begin to describe the disappointment, complete lack of professionalism and total money scam that this place is. I have never seen a business run like this or had an experience like this and I have traveled all over the globe. The way this was handled is an absolute disgrace. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
They just cancelled our trip for Aug 16-19 and told us to pound sand. Unbelievable. Beginning of the end for these guys, stay away !! Told me to pay in 3 instalments and took all my money up front and refused communication. Doug Rodgers couldnt run a hot dog stand. Run in the opposite direction

10/10 for Ray! Ray's Sport Fishing Charters offers world-class guided fishing in one of the best fishing meccas in the world. Your trip is taken care of from start to finish, with clean, comfortable accommodations located a stone's throw from the marina, you will have the opportunity to cook your catch on the BBQ for dinner. He also has chickens who lay fresh eggs for breakfast. It doesn't get any better or fresher than that! Ray is an extremely knowledgeable and friendly guide who will make your west coast fishing trip one to remember. Experience Tahsis in its truest form with Ray!
My colleagues and I fished with Ray's charters in 2017. We have known Ray for many years as we work in the Canadian oilfields together and always enjoyed his company . Ray's hospitality and work ethic are second to none. He genuinely loves fishing and worked passionately every day to fill our quotas. We had a great time and enjoyed the best overall experience off shore fishing that we have ever had. We couldn't make in out in 18 due to our work schedules but we'll be sure to come again next year! RT
My family, 2 teenage kids and my wife spend 4 outstanding days in August fishing with Ray in Tahsis. Some of the best 4 days I've had in a long time. We caught Chinook and Spring Salmon, Halibut and even fished for crab. It was simply an a amazing trip. The salmon that we could not eat was sent to St. Jean's cannery and I've now got 60 cans of smoked salmon to enjoy. A big thanks to Ray for the fishing and the banter and laughter on the porch after a day on the water.
I’ve done charters all over North America from Yellowknife to Catalina and fishing with Ray was the best trip I’ve ever done. Clean comfortable boat with top of the line gear. Not only is Ray always on the fish, but Tahsis BC is an amazing, quiet town. Caught our limit and brought home a freezer full of cod and salmon all cleaned, filleted, vacuum packed and frozen. Can’t wait to get back there again next year!!!
RAY is a fisherman!! He is amazing! Don't go to Tahsis without doing a charter with Ray! He knows the water. He is safe. He works from the moment you shake his hand in the dock until your fish is filleted!! Worth every penny!! Thanks Ray for the amazing day on the water!
Ray is a solid dude. We had beer, home cooked meals, local hospitality and have always caught our limit! Ray is supportive of the community and the surrounding support services. Good stories and never a dull moment. Jeff
I have been out fishing with Ray a few times now. We always slay the fish he knows where the honey holes are and we always have a great experience!! I highly recommend a trip out with Captain Ray..
Ray is the best. Works very hard to put fish in your cooler... And he loves doing it. Very good experience. Will definitely make this a yearly must do... Maybe more than once a year.
