Brigus has a summertime charm, an elogant weave of paved horse paths and several good shops, coupled with the salty sea and dramatic sub Arctic rocks that combines into one of the very best outports anywhere.
Like walking into a time capsule from the late 1800’s. Very friendly and knowledgeable curator, Elizabeth, took the time to explain the history of this wonderful heritage house and answer our questions. Worth the visit!
Person said it is closed for season. Sad but outside is great
Such an interesting and well-preserved site. If you’re interested in Newfoundland history, or histories of Arctic exploration (Bartlett was an explorer), this will be up your alley. We loved seeing how (affluent) people lived during this time period. A glimpse into Brigus’ past.
This stop was unplanned during the drive from St Johns to Rocky Harbour. We were simply told that Brigus itself is a nice quaint little town that is worth stopping by to check out because of its very distinct Newfoundland “feel”. When we arrived, we weren’t sure what there was to do but since it was raining, we went to check this place out and discovered it is a national historic site. This was worth checking out! We also visited the forge and the museum nearby but those are not run by Parks Canada so there is a charge (most Parks Canada sites are free this year for Canada 150). The Hawthorne cottage was worth checking out because the preservation was well maintained and suitably staged. We didn’t spend a lot of time here but managed to move through the house with the self-guided tour to better understand the historical and cultural significance of both Brigus as well as Captain Bob Bartlett. Grounds is lovely despite not being in their peak. The entire town is quite quaint and worth stopping by briefly to get a feel of a “typical Newfoundland town”.
Very interesting history. Enjoyed it.
This house is so full of history. It was a wonderful experience.
Great lesson on some local history and people who shaped the community in generations past.

A small but very informative museum of town history
Great building. Lots of interesting historical information. Staff are very friendly.
Nicely put together, small museum. Probably not fun for kids, but great for anyone else!

Spectacular view after 3-4km hike. It’s windy on the hill better to wear some warm cloths and hiking boots. We have waited 1/2 hour on the top and saw some whales actions down below the bay. However, the pathway was close by a gate in the midpoint of the trail for no reason. Took some time to figure out what is the right path to take.
3km hike was well worth it for the stunning view! Highly recommend this hike.
Very diverse terrain, not highly challenging, but has lots of fun ups and downs. Parked at the local ball field (suggested in Brigus tourism map) and was about 9km total. Includes a nice walk through this beautiful town. Followed up with a stop at the Vindicator for a beverage. Lots of great little cafe options and unique shops.
I would NOT rate this as a moderate trail. Sections were challenging and it gets very slippery if wet. Walking sticks/poles are recommended for stability. The views are spectacular and YES it was worth it!
What a hike to this lighthouse from the trail head 6-7km round trip (about 2 hours) uphill both ways! It’s a challenge but the beautiful views make it well worth it!
Hike was more intense than I expected. Bring plenty of water. Scenery along the trail was beautiful. Seeing the lighthouse was worth the hike.
It was a very windy day! Trail had lots of hills but it was a good workout. Would rate it difficult not moderate.
Lovely end of the road point of rock, birds, fishing boats, tourists, sun shine kinda say.

Delicious food, great service in a beautiful little town. Perfect place for a bit to eat in brigus. Fish and chips were very good and crisp. The macaroni and cheese was pretty good, just on the blander side.
Nice little place for a bite to eat. Went for late lunch with another couple. Service was great, food was good. Fish was crispy on top but soggy on the bottom plate, not from grease though, almost like it was wet. The fries were tasty, as was the club sandwich. Other couple had the smash burger and gave it compliments. The blueberry crumble and ice cream was delicious. I'd return to try other menu items.
Dropped in for early dinner. We had onion rings for an appetizer (they were the size of donuts, and delicious). We also had chicken tenders, chicken burger, and deep fried fish, all with fries dressing and gravy. We were stuffed and couldn’t even think of having dessert. All the food was great, fast and friendly service. Highly recommend if you’re in the area.
Super freindly staff! Affordable food, large portions, fish had a few bones and I would have liked a little more seasoning on the burger but food was still delicious. Especially the onion rings they are absolutely to die for! The largest onions rings I've ever seen.
At the time I arrived it was busy so it took awhile to get a table. I ordered a Brighouse beer and a Big Brigus Chicken Burger and swapped out the fries for Onion Rings. The onion rings were delicious however I found the chicken burger over cooked so the edges of the chicken was too crunchy and very dry. A server came and checked on us once but never came back. Again it was really busy. I had to go to the counter and ask for my bill so I could pay and leave. It seems to be a busy place so when you go just be prepared for longer wait times.
Great place to have a hot turkey sandwich. The sandwich was stuffed with turkey, came out super-hot, and the gravy was delicious. Fries/dressing were also fantastic, and service was super quick and the waitresses were so amazing!
Great food, highly suggest trying the blueberry crisp! Wait time will be a little long, had to wait 20 minutes outside and 30 minutes inside. But the wait is definitely worth it, apart from dessert I also suggest trying the chowder. Only thing is since the restraint is quite full during operation hours, the attention a server gives you would be less than an average restraint.
We wish we knew our waitresses’ name, but she was so sweet with our two year old, bringing us a booster and coloring pages and consistently checking in! Service was 10/10. I ordered the BLT wrap and loved it and the blueberry crisp is delicious! My husband got the brisket poutine and didn’t love the meat, so maybe try something else! Overall, a yummy restaurant with great service.

A beautiful old church from the 1800s. Nice to see it being used for a museum rather than falling into disrepair
Touching so much history here, this is a delightful stop. We enjoyed the grounds as much as the church.
No longer an active church still is open and used. Cementary attached dating back to late 1800's
Oh what a gem with such beautiful background to go with the wonderful church. A diffent must see area.
Beautiful church that is rich in history.
(Translated by Google) Really very pretty. To have. Bilingual staff. (Original) Vraiment très joli. À voir. Personnel bilingue.
