Had a great tour. We got a little unlucky with the whales according to the other reviews. We saw two whales. One of them dove and we never saw him come back up. The other one was hanging around our boat for the rest of the tour. We went to the bird preserve/conservation area and saw a ton of birds.
Zodiacs are the best way to experience whales in their natural habitat. These guys did a great job as they answered any questions we had and did their very best to get us to the right spot for whales. Best whale watching experience I've ever had. We lucked out and had lots of whales to see today. Highly recommend them.
Very helpful friendly tour guide. In the small zodiac we felt much closer to the whales and sea birds than in the larger boat. Loads of very active whales seen on our tour. The highlight of our holiday.
This boat tour is certainly an adventure—probably not a good idea if you’ve got a fragile stomach though. We got to see puffins and Mers and a rather large bergy bit (iceberg) up close. Though the waters were a bit rough I had complete confidence in our captain. You’ll have a new love for neon orange ;)
I just got back from my whaling adventure with Tyler and I am beyond grateful for his kindness, professionalism and expertise!!! What a fantastic experience being around more than 20 whales!!! They came right to our zodiac and the photos/videos I have will prove it! I highly recommend Ecotours for all your NL whaling experiences!
Such an amazing experience! Friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and fun. Plus you get to be in a zodiac without 100 other people crowded around you. We were right besides 2 humpback whales within the first 10 minutes of the trip. You also don’t waste time as the boat is quick and agile. Even if we hadn’t seen whales it would have been worth it. We were taken right into a sea cave and so close to puffins that they were flying literally within feet of us. I would highly recommend ecotours for the adventurous traveller who wants a more personalized and exciting experience. Thanks Tyler and Joannna!
What an amazing tour! We had the pleasure to see the coastal cliffs of the Avalon peninsula, that demonstrated the beauty and power of nature. The puffins were a given and the whales a bonus at this time of year (mid-August). Highly recommended!
Saw 3 whales, a pack of dolphins, and hundreds of Puffins and other bird species! We felt like we were part of the search as we spotted whales with our tour guide, Ray. He shared a lot of interesting insight about the whales and birds, and had a great sense of humour. Being a smaller craft, we were able to get closer to the whales and birds than the large boats, and he also took us to a beautiful cave inlet! Highly recommend Ecotours!

An amazing place with 2 million + seabirds, 500,000+ puffins and zero people. Only accessible by boat tours, as they are highly protected. We visited by boat tour with O’Briens, and so glad we did. It was incredible.
Beautiful scenery and views of the ocean. You must wear waterproof hiking boots as it was quite muddy in spots. The trail could have been better marked in spots as we had to back track a couple times. Also the trail was marked as “easy” and it was not! Quite rugged and challenging. Bring water and snacks.
Absolutely worth visiting and seeing in person. It was insane seeing so many birds in one place back in May, 2019 - which was peak breeding season. You can't get super close to the islands via tours because the waters are too rocky surrounding the islands. So the downside is if you're trying to take pictures it's a huge challenge to be far away on a shaky boat (due to Atlantic waves). If you get motion sickness you need to take serious precautions I guarantee you will get sick. It also gets seriously cold out on the water - especially considering winds and in spring. Make sure you dress warmly. If you've never seen a puffin before be aware they are tiny birds. It's fun to see them haphazardly fly and dive - they are surprisingly terrible fliers!
We travelled to the Witless Bay islands with the fine folks from Gatheralls Tours. The islands are truly amazing! Teaming with life! Our knowledgeable crew were able to fill us in on the countless facts and figures as it relates to the many bird species that inhabit the islands. It is an incredible journey. If you are lucky you might also see some whales... Gatheralls is a world class adventure tour. It is well worth the time and money invested on your vacation to The Rock.
We did the Zodiac Ecotour along the coastline and around the Islands. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and a skilled driver. May have been my favorite part of my trip
Went on Boat ride to see puffins and murres Amazing But bring WARM clothes
Trail was basic as were the views
Saw thousands of puffin and murres! Such cute "flying penguin" ! The Alcidae family includes the auks, puffins and murres. The birds in this family look a lot like penguins! They are black and white and stand upright. They are very good swimmers and divers, but unlike penguins, they can fly!
