In this review, I shall share a few views of mine by English and Chinese about my third time of visiting the Amethyst cove. Before we start, I have to warn that for your own safety matter, I would not suggest hiker with potential heart problems or high blood pressure issues. If it is possible , never stay alone in this area, accompany with 2 or 3 partners shall be the best. Along the hiking trail, I'd witnessed some elks, and you might hear from local media 5 or 6 years ago, coyote was witnessed for attacking dogs in breeding season. The hiking trail is generally great, though trailmarks are not so obvious than previous years, the trail is still there, but you must find the way to pass through those soaked lands and dead woods. Bug net is necessary, particular in summer time, blackflies are notorious . The hiking trail is located on a hill within 70 degree slope, please be careful on what you are standing on, mud, dirt and gravels are pretty much loose, very easy falling nearby when you are moving downward. Calm down when you are on the trail, always trying to find the strong point to hold your weight, while do not rely on the rope totally, put your all weight on the rope is dangerous and will bring you fatigue on your upper limbs, to save your energy, please rely on your standing points rather the rope. Weather, weather conditions are pretty much the first thing before you start the journey. BE AWARE, weather is changing rapidly in Bay of Fundy. Fogs occasionally (often) appear on this trail, just checking out if there is any "aggressively looking " cloud is about falling or moving towards the north mountain highland park before you start your hiking, if so just go visit amethyst cove next time, or alter your plan to the main trail of cape split provincial park is much better than challenging yourselves under such weather conditions on Amethyst cove trail. Tides are not always an issue to talk about, usually in summer the highest tide may reach the lowest timberline near the cliff around 4 PM in this season (please check the tide information), then manage your time while hiking and climbing. On the beach, landscapes were changed a lot since 2018, my first time to this beach. The waterfall disappeared due to a debris flow probably early of this year or late last year, typically if you go there to collect some rock samples, it is always a great place to do so. Agate, quartz, Chabazite, mordenite, etc, you may find them everywhere, enjoy your rock collecting. At last, I shall say this, this trail is generally good, it does have potential hazardous and safety concerns during the hiking, so do not stay alone on this trail for any purposes and keep 10 or 15 meter distance between you and your partners on that 70 degree slope, the continuous eroding cliffs generated bunch of gravels and loosing dirts, always find the strongest outcrops (or living roots) to standing on. The rope are just assistant points while climbing downward or upward, always rely on your lower limbs power. Carry enough water (at least 2L) is necessary, simple lunch is needed, for safety concerns, helmets, carabiners, gloves and bug nets are suggested. And be careful your every step, then go enjoy your challenges on this hiking trail.
Definitely harder while it's raining. But not impossible. And watch the tides. Takes about 1 hour to reach the beach from the car. Well marked by orange tape. Bring gloves.
Moderately difficult hike, mostly the climb up the slope with the ropes on the way out. Assuming you aren't a complete couch potato should be doable. Minimum 2 people, basically no cell reception and tons of slipping/tripping hazards. Check tides before going, about a 3-4 hour period around high tide where the water is up to the cliffs. Don't expect a crazy amount of amethyst, main exposed vein is depleted from decades of Acadian university geology field trips and the name attracting rock hunters, how ever there is still some to be found, as well as zeolites and other fun things.
I and my partner had gone to visit Amethyst Cove today hoping to be able to comb the shore and find some amethyst. While the most we could find was a few small amethyst stones there was plenty of quartz and a nice amount of agate. We were warned beforehand about rock hounds who go and wipe the shores clean and that was right. However, would I recommend the walk and climb down the cliff? No. It’s a 500ft slope that is quite loose under you and some places don’t have any places to put your feet and is just straight mud slope. There were gloves there for the ropes but they were thrown on the ground dirty and soaked so if you decide to put yourself through this, bring gloves. The way up was terrifying, if you suffer from anything stress induced or anxiety... do not go. The trail before you hit the cliff is lovely and was quite nice to walk on but if you are hoping to see anything spectacular I’d say just stay on the cape split trail or go to amethyst cove by boat. It is very unsafe, DO NOT BRING CHILDREN.
So many people have taken gloves to the trail head, and left them...littered with 40 + gloves....pack in amd pack out....this was once a nice little trail...now completely over hiked and so much litter...will not be going back
Bring gloves to climb the rope, cross the large field on the right of the parking lot, you'll find a path on the left, follow it passed a sketchy cabin, keep to the "main" beaten path. Itll take about 20 mins to reach the ropes. And it is a rope. About 20 mins decent by rope. No dogs, it's not dog friendly. BRING LOTS OF WATER.
I absolutely loved this hike. It was a challenging, exciting adventure...I even found some cool rocks
Tricky to get down but beautiful beach for rocks
