Project Éole is the world's largest Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine. Its unique shape makes it stand out immediately from all the other wind turbines in the vicinity and although it has been inactive since the early 90s, it's a testament to the forward thinking of Canadian engineers of the time. The site now serves as a museum which goes over the history of wind turbines in the area and how the Cap Chat site became a testbed for vertical axis wind farms which have an advantage over conventional turbines in that they're less prone to variations in wind direction. The surrounding wind farm is still the largest in the Gaspesie region and served to accelerate its spread across Eastern Canada. The curator is fully bilingual and very knowledgeable about the associated technologies. There are several displays around the grounds and you can also walk inside the control room and base of the turbine. Unfortunately not all of the displays have been translated into English, however the image translation via Google Translate seems to work fine for the most part. The site also offers excellent views of the ocean and several trails. It's definitely well worth a visit for those who have an interest in science, technology and sustainability.
While visiting in Gosses Roches in the Gaspésie area, a local suggested we go visit this place, glad we did. Quite an impressive structure and very interesting to see and hear how Hydro Quebec started to explore wind energy in the '80s. The owner Benjamin is very well versed, he knows all his facts and did a great job at explaining to us the history, all of the occurring events and updated facts on where the technology and industries are today. The ticket price is $15 per adult which is very reasonable considering it will take you about an hour for the while tour which includes you visiting the premises. Great spot, we learned so much about wind energy and it's evolution.
This museum is just in the beginning of its path, but I am glad they try to make this place educational and interesting. Otherwise it would have been just a memory of a project someone did years ago and no one knows what to do with it now :-) If you are interested in wind power generation - you should visit. This was the first time I could get so close to the actual working generator and to find how big they are and about the complexities of the technology. There's also much to see about real big machinery. Add here an ability to see the world from the top of the tower (through VR so far, but that's just for now) and a nice merch boutique. Most texts on the posters are only in French yet, but they are working on it and the guides do speak English, so they will be able to just tell you everything in case you can't read in French. Definitely worth the time! I wish the project the best of luck!
Great little hidden gem in plain site. Very fun to hear the owners explanation of the whole infrastructure. Stayed longer than we thought!
A must visit for a science enthusiast. An even more important visit for someone who isn’t in order to actually see the wonders of science. I’d recommend this must visit to everyone who drives past here. You can spend up to an hour here but leave behind with a lifetime of scientific curiosity. I would also like to thank the staff for explaining everything. They care about their visitors. Also they are friendly in both english and French which is advantageous
Nice scenery, magnificent structure locked in time. The interior exhibits are quite bare, but it shows some of the equipments or tools used previously.
Learned a great deal about the importance of alternative energy sources and about harnessing the wind. Very knowledgeable docent! Really interesting site.
We were on a road trip to Perce and found the poster of this place. We decided to stop by. It turned out to be the greatest detour we ever made. Friendly staff who are happy to answer all kinds of questions
