Beautiful beach and lots of waves. If you take lessons, you will be pushed into white water on “the inside”. This is OK for a couple of days but you will likely get bored, and “outside” can be bigger and rougher, not well suited for someone trying to catch their first real non-whitewater wave. The local surf schools don’t seem to want to take non-locals to other surf spots, might be “taboo”, not sure. While I am not a pro surfer by any stretch, I grew up surfing in CA and HI, so this information is not from a novice.
We visited after several weeks of heavy rain, so unfortunately, there were still some dirty patches in the ocean, especially around the rip tides (with green-yellow foam). The water failed the biweekly official quality tests, but that didn’t stop most people from enjoying the beach and water. The water temperature was fantastic, and we had amazing conditions for surfing. One very windy day made it tough for me as a beginner to paddle out to the lineup, but otherwise, the beach was super beginner-friendly. My husband and I took semi-private lessons with Kim from Nosara Surf Academy, and they were the best surfing lessons I’ve ever had! Kim was incredibly effective, and I felt safe pushing past my previous limits—highly recommend. One downside: the beach has almost no shade. I strongly suggest bringing a beach tent or canvas for sun protection; otherwise, it’s easy to get burned. Most people seemed to stay just a few hours before heading out. If you walk toward the end of the beach, there are several shortcuts to Playa Peladas, where you can see the water geyser! Also La Luna is the perfect spot for a drink will watching the sunset!
Hands down, the best beach for kids in the world (that I've been to). Surf was OK, not great. But the beach was uncrowded and all the people that were there were so friendly. You can walk down to the tide pools to the north and see live corals. Just love this beach so much. I played in the perfect sandbar waves for hours and hours with my daughter. I caught a few waves too on a 6'8" fun board. I will miss this place. I hope I make it back someday.
Amazing, open and extensive beach. Perfect to see sunsets. It's so big, that it's never crowded. The nice thing is that this is a tourist gathering spot and there is a lot of social and mingling, within a laid and relaxed vive. Upmarket feel. Perfect for surfing. Walking distance from restaurants and hotels.
Playa Guiones in Costa Rica is a superb destination for surfing with a laid-back atmosphere and natural beauty. We recently brought 15 international surfers here for a coaching trip, and Playa Guiones exceeded our expectations. Surfing Experience: Playa Guiones offers consistent waves suitable for surfers of all levels. Our group enjoyed personalized coaching sessions against the backdrop of the beach's spacious shoreline. Beach Atmosphere: The beach exudes a relaxed, upscale vibe, appealing to both locals and tourists. Despite its popularity, Playa Guiones remains uncrowded, allowing us to focus on surfing and enjoy the serene surroundings. Local Life: The town is ideal for those who appreciate a slow-paced lifestyle. Evenings are quiet, with limited nightlife options apart from occasional house parties or events at places like Selina. Local Amenities: Conveniently located restaurants and hotels provide opportunities to explore Costa Rican cuisine and immerse oneself in the local culture after a day of surfing. Overall Experience: Our surf coaching trip to Playa Guiones was unforgettable. It offers excellent surfing conditions and a peaceful ambiance, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing and rejuvenating stay in Costa Rica.
Spent a week at the nearby Bodhi Tree Resort and loved this serene beach! Sunset painting, sunrise bike riding, beginner surf lesson, and playing in the waves. Pura vida, good for the soul!
Fantastic place for learning to surf. The waves are popular, i.e. crowded, but with our awesome instructors it was no issue.. several huts for shade but otherwise bring an umbrella/tent to avoid the sun. Amazingly clean. Incredibly soft sand.
Definition of Pura Vida would best describe this beach. You can rent surfboards nearby or just bring a towel to lay on. Breathtaking sunsets in the evening. We had a bonfire at night. Enjoy the moment because it will soon be a memory.

Incredible. One of the best experiences ever. Got to know a lot about Costa Rica's wildlife. The guides were incredible and it was really touching to see how much love is put into the sanctuary. This is definitely something I would recommend to do with kids / younger generations as well, to make them aware of the world around us and how we need to preserve it. Highly highly recommend.
One of the most magical experiences during our 2 weeks in Costa Rica!!! Be ready to see animals EVERYWHERE - sooooo many monkeys and coatis and birds (and baby monkeys!!!!)!! The guides are so informed, caring, and knowledgeable and we loved learning about the important work being done to help animals in need. Highly recommend for all ages, super family friendly, memorable and will be talked about and reminisced fondly over for many years to come!!!
Visiting Sibu was an unforgettable experience. You can tell that the staff and owner Vicki truly care about the animals they take care off. It was a great opportunity to learn about the kind of monkeys that you can find in Costa Rica, the main reason why these monkeys get injured and need to be sent to sanctuaries and how to prevent those injuries and help conservation. Please consider visiting and donating, this place is a gem!
Not all heroes wear capes. Open 3 days a week. Rez a must. Rescued primates from Costa Rica. Worth every penny. Highly recommended.
Absolutely wonderful animal sanctuary - I was fighting tears for a good chunk of the time, meeting the beautiful animals that are so lucky to be here (despite having such harrowing starts to life). The founder Vicki and her team are doing a phemomenal job. I am inspired to lean in and support them, and also spread the word about this incredible place. The animals are so adorable too - such sweet precious creatures! Cannot recommend this place enough - spread the word, help them raise more funds to save more monkeys! It's tragic how many animal lives are being killed by the commercialization of this beautiful part of the world - we need, need, need to save these innocent beings.
This was such an amazing trip! I would highly recommend! It was easy to book online, I would recommend planning ahead of time as the tour is often sold out. The jungle was amazing, the volunteer team work so hard and Vicki (owner and founder) does such incredible work! We saw lots of wildlife and it was so heart warming to know that the money you pay for the tour goes towards the conservation and rescue work that they devote their time to. Such a special day!
Visiting Sibu Sanctuary was truly the highlight of our trip to Nosara! Our group of 15 had the most wonderful experience. Fabian, our guide, was incredible! He was so knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the wildlife and ecosystem. Vicki (the director) was incredible as well! We learned so much about the animals’ roles in the environment and walked away with a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of it all. The sanctuary is doing such meaningful work, and it’s an absolute must-visit when in Nosara.
Very informative about the plight of the howlers in Nosara. And other places in the country where they are losing habitat. Great folks doing amazing work but the stars were the wildlife they care for.

Nelson, our guide, was so informative and passionate it resonated with our entire family! We brought our kids, 8 and 11, and they learned so much! It’s a perfect educational outing! Great for older kids. Definitely would not recommend for younger than 5. Thank you Nelson for a lovely morning!
We took a tour with Nelson this morning and it was fabulous. He is lovely and the amount of education we enjoyed was amazing. What an impactful organization. We enjoyed the visual portion of the presentation inside the Education Dome as well as getting to see and hear the stories of the animals who must stay there because they are not able to be reintroduced to the wild. We highly recommend this tour if you are visiting Costa Rica. Their reach goes well past Costa Rica as they do work all over the world.
My family and I booked a private tour during our stay in Nosara, Costa Rica. Lisa was our guide and she was amazing! We learned so much about the wild life in the area and the types of obstacles they face. It was a wonderful and informative experience that all ages will enjoy and the proceeds go straight to the Nosara animals there. We cannot recommend enough!
We visited the IAR in early February 25. Lisa our guide was fluent in English and Spanish and from Toronto. She provided us with great information and guided the short tour excellently. The organization is funded by public donation and is a great example of Costa Rica’s desire for conservation and recovery of wildlife. Support them to promote no electrocution policies with the local and federal governments. Definately check it out and help if you can.
I had such a lovely and informative visit to IAR Nosara! It’s heartbreaking to witness what many animals have endured but also heartwarming to see that there are so many people that care. Thank you all so much for everything you do!
We had such a lovely visit! Our guide Nelson was so kind, informative and passionate about the animals. What a wonderful organization that is helping rehabilitate animals and hopefully able to reintroduce them to the wild. Those animals that are unable to be reintroduced are provided a forever home. Highly recommend!!
Truly a great experience! Our guide Roy was extremely knowledgeable and took his time to guide us around the sanctuary. It is great to see all the heart and soul that is poured into taking care and hopefully releasing the wild animals.
Mauricio was our guide, and he was phenomenal. The website says it is only for 4 years or older, but that with notice, they can accommodate younger guests. I called in the morning to ask about my family coming with a 2.5yo and an 8 month old. They said it would be no problem and that we would be able to come. In our group were: my parents (60s-70s), myself & husband, and our young children (2.5 year old and 8.5 month old). We were the only party in the tour group that day, but we were still warmly welcomed. Mau has a wealth of knowledge about the animals and facility, and it is easy to see how much he cares for the work they do at the rescue. I highly recommend this experience for those who want to learn about helping, those who want to see some animals closer, and those who want to make a small difference through their donation to a worthy cause. Some specifics of the visit that might be helpful: - They just moved to this location in early 2024. This review is from June 2024, so there are still a few things being finished up. - I highly recommend wearing insect repellant, as you will be walking through nature... and there are a LOT of mosquitos. - If you are following directions on Google maps, it will take you to the correct spot, but you may think you missed it. Mau met us at the gate, though, so I just had to roll down my window to ask if we were at the right place. - There is parking, and there are restrooms available at the facility. Later this year (2024), they are planning to open a small coffee shop on site for visitors. - The tour consists of viewing a brief presentation inside, followed by a type of the rescue animals who cannot be released back into the wild for various reasons. Mau answered all of our questions throughout the entire tour about the animals there, the organization, and even about random insects or other animals we asked about. After we saw the animals, we returned to the indoor presentation to learn more about the reasons they need the rescue and what they are doing around the world. - You will not see the animals who may still be released because they do not want them to get used to human interaction, as that endangers their future. You WILL see animals who have been rescued and cannot be released. At the time of our visit, there were a variety of birds, several howlers, and several others. - My 2.5yo made it through the entire 1st presentation and the walking tour, but was a bit antsy by the end. They had a small play mat set up right next to us, where he could play with some of the stuffed animals, a coloring book, and a few other small items. I thought it was so thoughtful and rather helpful so I could hear the rest of the presentation. - The donation for the tour may feel steep, but I think it was fully worth it. The work the organization does is needed and is very involved... and expensive. They rely on donations to save the animals and rehabilitate them for release back into the wild. They also do have some souvenirs available.

Terrific club! Very personable staff. Coach Camila connected me with a hitting partner and I got to arrange some lessons too. Double thumbs up 👍🏽👍🏽
Good place to play on clay in Costa Rica. 1 hour rental of a court was $30 (in the evening), balls were $10. Also enquired about a private personal class, which was $70/h, very expensive for Costa Rican standards.
Go to 506 tennis. The courts here are not well kept. Clay is way under the lines.
Awesome place to train and practice tennis!!!
