Great little stop. The food was fantastic, one of the best tonkatsu I've ever had. The vegetables and fruits being sold looked fantastic, but I wasn't anywhere near getting back to a fridge so I couldn't get some of the things I wanted
Beautiful view and nice little grocery store. Not your typical roadside stop in Japan. Not so many shops to choose from, but it's a nice change of pace.
Large parking area where you can see nice view of mountain😊
Mt. Ontake is a little too far to see
(Translated by Google) On a clear day, you can apparently see Mount Ontake from the wooden terrace. Unfortunately, when I visited, it was covered in clouds. I visited around 9am and the restaurant was offering a morning-only buffet. However, I was hoping to try the Shinshu Salmon Marinated Rice Bowl, which has received rave reviews, so this was also a disappointment. I'd like to return and visit around lunchtime on a clear day.

Compared to some of the larger resorts, this park isn’t overcrowded. The atmosphere feels more relaxed, and there’s plenty of space on the slopes to enjoy skiing without feeling cramped. My 1 year old daughter enjoyed here very much
Great place to teach your kids to ski since no snowboarders are allowed. Has all you need with some more challenging routes for more advanced skiers. Another thing to note is that the parking is free.
Ski pistol very small. We don't pay to park. Good track for beginners.Unfortunately there was little snow
Super-friendly staff all around the resort. Enough car parking in two or three places. There are restaurants along the slope, so you can try another if one is ifull.
it was fun ⛷️🏂
Awesome, good for beginners to intermediates
(Translated by Google) Only for skis, which are valuable these days. I was born in a time when snowboarding didn't exist, so I'm at peace with it. Intermediate to advanced skiers can take turns on the high-speed lift halfway up the hill, so the area is separated from beginners. I was looking forward to the view, but unfortunately it was gas-filled. I had the "Shinshu Salmon Teri Tamadon" (1,400 yen) at the Winky Kitchen restaurant at the foot of the mountain. It was delicious, but I felt the volume was small for the price. However, overall, I saw it as a device designed to maintain ski-only use. I felt that they were able to differentiate themselves from others by daring to take a difficult management path.
(Translated by Google) This is a ski resort specializing in skiing. So I have an image that it is not dangerous. I think the lift is also easy to ride. Before getting on the lift, the staff carefully monitors the ride and makes sure to slow down or stop if it's dangerous. The area where you get off the lift is wide, so you don't have to rush, and it's friendly for beginners. There were three places where we could eat lunch. The rotation is good, so even though it was crowded, I was able to get a seat and take a good rest. They also sell beer. There are several parking lots, but the one closest to the lift ticket office seemed more convenient. Kiso-Fukushima is Post town. I was staying here after hiking from Nagiso to Nojiri (am amazing hike btw), and then taking the train to here. I really regret not staying here for two nights, I really should have stayed here last night instead of Nakatsugawa. Fukushima Juku has so much more charm, lots of preserved buildings from the Nakasendo Edo period. There are plenty of food options too, and sadly as I'm only staying one night and booked a kaiseki dinner at my hotel I couldn't give it a try. Next time! I would really recommend staying for at least two nights at this lovely town.
Doesn't look at old as other post towns that got preserved like Tsumago-juku, but the river is beautiful and there are some good bakery and restaurants around.
Kiso Fukushima-juku was the 37th post town (shukuba) along the historic Nakasendō. Kiso Fukushima was home to one of the four major sekisho (checkpoints) on the Nakasendō, where travelers and goods were inspected for security and control purposes. The powerful Yamamura family, who governed the Kiso Valley on behalf of the Tokugawa shogunate for nearly 280 years, had their residence here. Among key attractions of the town are: Fukushima Sekisho Museum: A reconstructed Edo-period checkpoint where you can see documents, weapons, and artifacts related to travel control. Yamamura Daikan Residence: A partially preserved official residence that offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of local rulers. Uenodan District: A charming street area with well-preserved Edo-style wooden buildings, cafes, shops, and small museums. The city is less popular among tourists than Magome or Tsumago and therefore less crowded and more peaceful. Step into history and discover the charm of the Nakasendō. ⛰️⛩️🛤️✨
Pretty small compared to Magome and Tsumago
Wonderful small town along historic the Edo path.

This place gives a great unlimited view of Mt ontake. My dog Tontoro loved it
A small ski resort with only 2 lifts and 4 runs. Great for beginner / intermediate skiers or boarders. Cafeteria is good. Weekday lift passes are only ¥2,100. Free parking.
Good ski resort well cared, with attentive staff. Lift system is by NFC card (you do not need to show it). But it was not very cheap for the number of lifts. Around 4000 yens for the first day. Ski set rental will be around 4000 (excluding clothes) too. The weather was not the best but there were only 3 lifts and one was not operating. Also there were like 3 or trails only and not very long. It is a small resort but with similar price to others. But for this season as there were not much snow in this area, the snow was not bad there.
Average... But the ski run is nice and long. Can't buy your ticket with a credit card but you can for the rentals... ridiculous.
Loved this place due to ultra dry snow.
Fresh air, wide restaurant.
(Translated by Google) Since it is a cold place, the snow quality was good. Beautiful temple and gardens. Be sure to spend a few minutes relaxing in the little garden hidden next to the rock garden.
Beautiful Buddist temple in the Kiso-Fukushima town. Do visit the Garden.

(Translated by Google) One of the four major checkpoints of the Edo period, Fukushima Checkpoint is a natural fortress sandwiched between the deep mountains of Kiso and a river, at the midpoint of the Nakasendo. You can learn about its history from the exhibits. If you are going to both this place and Daikan-yashiki, we recommend that you get a set ticket. I looked around at various places, but the first lady at the reception left an impression on me. In particular, Mr. Yamamura, who served as Seki magistrate for about 280 years during the Edo period, was not a bad magistrate but a good magistrate. I was told to keep this in mind. In addition to the history of the checkpoint, when I told him that I was planning to see Kozenji Temple and the Daikan's mansion, he wrote the directions and parking information on a map and gave detailed explanations, so I was able to tour around without any difficulty. . I think it was because it was empty on weekdays, but it had the same amount of information as a tourist information center. I hope to see you again when I visit again. Very interesting for getting info about the history of Kiso and the Nakasendo trail. Hardly any information in English, Google translator becomes essential here. Lots of scrolls and ancient weapons. Also nice view of the city from the top.
Described as a must see on some travel sites but frankly it is not much to see. Prob has significant historical value as it was one of the checkpoints along the nakasendo trail used to traverse kyoto Tokyo. Can finish in 20mins tops. It was raining when we visited and the staff at the counter was SO HELPFUL and helped us call a cab to get back to the train station so kudos for that!

In the past, it was probably a place where warriors filled with enthusiasm to overthrow the Taira clan gathered, but today it is a quiet place with few people around. However, it is therefore a good environment to immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere. After a short walk, the field of view opens up and you can clearly see the mountain village.

Various tools that were actually used at the checkpoint are on display, and the guardhouse where pass verification took place is also reproduced, allowing you to get a realistic feel for the atmosphere of the checkpoint of old. Came here early morning by local train, it was really quiet and peaceful before all the stores open, you get to walk around and take photos all you like. The village vibe is just so peaceful and the air is so fresh and crisp in the morning, it feels good to just walk and explore what is in the back alleys. If you enjoy exploring small towns or villages, this place would be awesome. There are also some souvenir stores which sell locally made handicraft items and some local snacks and delicacies as well. A half day visit is perfect to explore the whole area at a very leisure pace.
We got there on Tuesday, later afternoon. It was super quiet and only few shops and restaurants were open. The area was really nice though and we thoroughly enjoyed our walk through it which took 1 hour.
We stopped by in the afternoon while driving through from Lake Suwa, en route to Nagoya. We enjoyed strolling through this rustic historic town, superbly preserved since the Edo period. The souvenir shops, restaurants and minshuku are worth exploring. We sampled some of the snacks and sake, and walked along the river and enjoyed stepping onto the timber bridge -Kiso Ohashi This bridge crosses the Narai River, which runs parallel to the main street. Extending 30 meters, it is one of the longest wooden bridges in Japan. It was built quite recently, in the 1990s. Our only regret is that we were a bit early for the glorious autumn colours as we were there in mid-October.
Wonderful place to visit although the P&P crowd (photo and pee) who stops here between train hours from-to Nagoya and Nagano can make it too touristy certain times of the day. If your schedule allows, stay overnight in one the inns ( we stayed in one right in the middle of town and it was fabulous). This way you can stroll through town during peaceful times in the evening and early morning when everything is closed and quiet. During the day you can enjoy going in and out of the shops and enjoying various snacks. See the place before it turns into a total tourist trap, which it's rapidly headed towards.
📍 Narai-juku 奈良井宿 @ Nagano, Japan 🇯🇵 We visited Narai-juku on 13 November 2025, and it was one of the most charming and beautifully preserved post towns along the Nakasendo Trail. The nostalgic Edo-period atmosphere is felt immediately — traditional wooden houses, quiet streets, and beautifully preserved architecture that feels like stepping back into old Japan. The village is long and enjoyable to walk through, filled with craft shops, small cafes, and local eateries. We tried a bowl of tempura soba, which was warm, flavourful, and perfect for the cool autumn weather. Do note that restaurants can have a waiting time of around 20–30 minutes, especially during peak hours — so plan to spend a bit more time if you intend to dine here. We reached Narai-juku by following the signs and crossing the underground trainline from the nearby main parking area. The route was clear, well guided, and easy to follow. Narai-juku is peaceful and less commercial compared to other post towns, giving it an authentic, relaxed atmosphere. In autumn, the surrounding mountains create a beautiful backdrop, enhancing the charm of the wooden streets. A wonderful destination for: • 🍜 Local dishes like tempura soba • 📸 Traditional Edo-style street photos • 🛍️ Handcrafted wooden souvenirs • 🚶 Scenic village walking • 🍡 Local snacks • 🏯 Experiencing historical Nakasendo culture Overall, Narai-juku is a must-visit — calm, scenic, and full of old-town character. Just be prepared for a 20–30 minute wait if you’re planning to eat here. 🍁🏘️✨
We came here early, around 9am, by car to wander through town for an hour. At that time, it was still very quiet with barely anyone out on the streets. The tranquility almost teleports you back to the Edo period. The idyllic landscape of autumn trees in the background makes the whole place look like a painting. PS: There are many parking lots scattered across town. It'll cost you 500 yen.
The town itself is beautifully preserved and charming. However, when we came, it was completely empty and almost shops were closed, which unfortunately made the long drive feel less worthwhile. We hiked the Torii Pass, it was a pleasant walk, but not spectacular enough to justify the trip alone.
Japan's Twin Peaks. Strange vibes but maybe being a cold November afternoon impacted that. It was a stop on the way to Matsumoto. Got nice umeshu at the interesting local goods store.
