Magical and sadly no longer hidden gem. Wonderful turquoise waters that stay shallow for a long way then steep drop off. So great for little children and adults wanting to swim. Great for water toys and sailing sadly many power boats and noisy annoying SeaDoo watercraft. Sadly this is only a rain fed lake system (no streams in or out) so motorized boats and peoples suncreams are over time polluting these lakes. More needs to be done now to protect this MAGNIFICENT AREA.
What a magical place. Honestly couldn’t recommend this place enough and Joss and lane were truly wonderful. Second time going to the lakes and certainly won’t be the last.
Beautiful place! Love spending time here with families
Squeaky white sand and crystal clear water that then dips down to the dark blue - they say up to 100 meters. There is also a platoon there so that you can jump into the warm water while being able to see the bottom 15 meters down. The camp ground is good, it is nice and flat. The toilets are good. I recommend a walk up to the top of the hill where you will be able to see both lakes.
Its a must visit when your in Northland. Crystal clear waters and so beautifull 😍😍 Will definitly be staying at the campgrounds on my next visit cause we ddnt wanna leave. They also have a food truck for ur hot chips and burgers, plus a icecream truck . Perfect on all corners 💛
Nice day at the lakes, before the holiday season starts. Nice swimming in the lovely clear waters.
Had 2 days camping experience at Pine Beach. We had a lot fun! I love the white sand and the warm water. I had seen the galaxy and many shining stars in the night. Highly recommend this to anyone.
we had the best holiday, staying in the pine beach campground option was the best ever, office team really warm and friendly, night security guys the best, always happy and friendly, and also wanted to thank to the lady which clean the toilets at the campground, she did a hard work everyday to maintain those toilet clean, and she had all my respect. The lakes are amazing, clear, fresh and warmest water in NZ, wonderful place to no be missed.

Amazing museum, very proud locals putting together a great collection and well presented information. Talked to a local about how they funraised to build function centre etc
A fantastic museum! Far more than we expected. The best we've been to. Thank you!
We had a fantastic visit to the Dargaville Museum this weekend. I did not know what to expect but we all truely enjoyed the various displays en collections. We went with 5 kids from 3.5-9 years and there was something to enchant each of them. I think the 3.5year old ran around the train for a full half hour trying to catch it coming out the other side of the tunnel. It was the perfect length to entertain without tiring. The reception staff were incredibly friendly and the little gift shop full of little treasures. Afterwards we had a picnic outside enjoying the sun with the lovely view! Thank You all for a great afternoon!
This is an excellent musium displaying the history of this Dargaville region. It has a vast, well assembled display of exhibits and are very well described. Staff are helpful, and the parking area is large. Incidentally we feel the entry fee is too cheap.
Great museum. Set out nicely, lots of different themed rooms, easy to read captions. Went with myself & 5 kids and they let us in for the price of a family ticket. Ie. One kid free. Kids enjoyed it & enjoyed the scavenger hunt they got given to do
Great place to bring the kids, with a scavenger hunt to spark interest and capture attention along the way. Museum and it's team clearly does great work to record and preserve local history with limited resources. Well done.
I had no idea about how rich Dargavilles history was until.going to the museum. So much to see and discover.
What an absolute gem of a place to visit. World class exhibitions representative of the era. Very well done

There are so many big Kauri here. They're absolutely amazing and hide around every corner. Informative easy walk including a Weta home! Kauri dieback stations help prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease, so be sure to use the dieback stations to ensure your footware is free of any dirt when entering and exiting.
🌿 A Hidden Gem of Nature! Trounson Kauri Park is a peaceful and magical place for nature lovers. The well-maintained boardwalk takes you through ancient kauri trees, lush native bush, and offers a real chance to spot kiwi birds at night. It's quiet, serene, and perfect for a relaxing walk or night adventure. A must-visit if you're exploring Northland!
Nice easy walk on boardes walkway all the way. Lots of BIG trees and kids loved loiking for the next big one. One of the trees is estimated at 1200 years
Small and pretty basic camp, be sure to bring coins for the showers. Some of the electric rings for the cookers don't work and there is only one chair in the kitchen. If you follow the official signage for the park it brings you down a very long gravel road. But if you turn off closer to dargaville the road is better.
We originally visited because we had heard about being able to see kiwi. We did the whole red light torches and spent some time waiting but sadly it mustn't have been the right time. However we visited during the daytime too and really enjoyed walking around this track as there were some massive Kauri trees. It was also interesting and sad to see the devastating affect of Kauri die back as there were many dead Kauri.
Beautiful peaceful place with many big Kauri trees, a magical easy walk. So glad some past people had the forethought not to cut them all down but save some for future generations to enjoy. I just hope people take note of the signs and protect the trees.
Absolutely loved staying at this campground and taking the loop walk. Facilities are clean, with fridge, cooktops, sinks, and solar heated water for showers. Toilets could use some work and soap. Did the loop walk in the day and night. No kiwis sighted, but heard. Saw lots of glow worms. The kauri were amazing and beautiful.
On our first camping trip to this site, we stumbled along the visitors book and read that you can see kiwi's at night. That night once it went dark we headed out, and this short walk then took us over 4 hours as we listened to the kiwis call and move around in the bush close to you. The following week we drove back with Flash lights that were covered in red cellophane (the kiwis do not notice the red light) and sat on the walking track all night watching as the kiwis' come up so close that you could almost touch them! Every now and then we make a round trip (3+ hrs drive each way) just to watch them for a few hours. This is an absolute gem and a must do experience

A good visit to this interesting studio and talked to the lovely lady here on things of Kauri wood and crafts. There are crafts here made of kauri dating back to over tens of thousands of years. Love the old workshop room of Rick too, must have many stories inside it.
Very nice owners of the business, extremely knowledgeable about surrounding area and activities. The craftsmanship of all their products are above and beyond amazing quality. If you like wood work it's definitely a place to come and see you wont be dissapointed.
Sue and Rick Taylor really friendly and helpful Master woodturner. Interesting to chat to. Very knowledgeable
I loved my visit. The owners were friendly and welcoming. I had a informative conversation with the owner about woodturning. I loved being able to step into his workshop and see where he creates his stunning wood art. There was also stunning art in the room next door. I drove away inspired. I hope to return soon.
Tony and his son Matt have produced some brilliant sculptures in wood. Tony took us around his workshop area and showed us pieces in progress and explained how he decides on what to sculpt from particular pieces of wood. The grain in some of his Kauri pieces was amazing, it was a pleasure to get an insight into his work
I visited in 2020 right before the pandemic. Very friendly folks. Beautiful woodwork. I have heard the gallery has moved, but not that far from the place I visited. I'd love to return and take a woodturning class
This is not an official information centre, it is not an "I" sight centre, do not rely on verbal information given by the owners about accomodation in the area of Dargaville and surrounding places?? Customers need to visit in person individual accomodation businesses themselves to get the correct prices and other infomation. Do not rely on this centre for fair reviews as only selected businesses are voiced and promoted. Please only make payments directly to businesses in the area, as an old system was in place whereby the unofficial infomation centre collected the money first off customers for services given by a third party.(accomadation). The Kauri Gallery has beautiful works of art, well done. Tourists/locals BEWARE of asking about accomadation requirements!!!
World famous. Mr Taylor is a master and to watch him work is a gift. Great shop in Dargaville.

We were in Northland for only a couple days and very thankful that Dave & Shane were able to do a special run for our group to accommodate us. Great length trip, 3.5hrs is a good amount of time for a day out. They don’t currently do the longer trip after Cyclone Gabriel caused a slip up the line. Fare was very affordable compared to other rail cart operators. The personal touch that both guides brought to the trip really made it worth it, the scones were great!
Great little excursion on an historic Rail line on a converted golf cart. Good information and safety precautions given. Had a lovely morning tea with scones and coffee/tea homemade by Dave.
We had a great trip with Dargaville Rail Tours. Dave and Shane are excellent tour guides. Our family from Brisbane rated it as one of their highlight activities while in Auckland.
We were the lucky ones and managed to ride the rail carts on their last trip. A great and informative trip, thanks.
Did the rail tour this morning, so glad we did!! It's a great activity for any age group. Dave and Shane were so personable and informative, such lovely people. Enjoyed the excursion and the scones were super delightful. A must do for all the family. Would go again!! A pleasant and relaxing way to enjoy the area.
Had the most amazing experience here ! I contacted them the night before to see if they might have a seat available, they were fully booked but offered me a spot on the cart with the guides, which I gladly took ! Yes it was a bit wet but the trip was tons of fun and the home made scones and coffee at the halfway point were delicious
Did the rail tour today, despite the rain and wind awesome tiki tour through the greenery. Good fun Dave and Shaun were excellent Guides, came with some complimentary scones and coffee/ tea great time. I highly recommend doing it when you’re visiting Dargaville and having a bit time to spare. Cheers Gerrit and Camellia
This is awesome! It is a different experience of using rail road on a golf cart! Coffee, Tea with scones and Easter eggs (it was Easter weekend). The people who run this are very nice, informative and passionate about what they do. It is a "must do" thingy. Track goes through farms where you can enjoy picturesque landscapes.

Really pleasant experience super lovely couple fun to ride in the barrel train the little church was so cute being the tiniest church in NZ
Amazing short stop in Dargville, don't just driveby, stop and see the smallest church in NZ and jump on the cart ride through the secret track or just have a chat with extremely friendly host and grab some fresh kumara. Highly recommend.
May and Ernie are incredible. The Kumara Box Museum is amazing. Everyone need to go there.
Awesome place. Thanks Ernie really enjoyed the "train" ride and the show
This is a roadside attraction par excellence. May's show was absolutely delightful, and the cabinet of curiosities was packed with everything imaginable. The kitchen is clean and well stocked. We had a lovely view of the sunset across the fields when we camped. We were certain we would be murdered, one of the weirdest places I've ever been, cannot recommend it enough.
Funky place to stay in a camper, and your fee for overnight gets you in to see museum as well as a lounge area, kitchen, and shower. It’s an eclectic collection honouring Kumara history, nautical and marine life, and a bunch of other miscellaneous things that captured the owners fancy. In the morning I walked over the New Zealand’s smallest church. Kumara Ernie was away so I didn’t get to meet him, or see a show in their theatre. This really is a one of a kind place for being so unique, and the hosts are such lovely, friendly people!
The absolute best people, amazing hospitality, lovely and genuine married couple who runs The Kumara Box. When you arrive they welcome you into there home and you get offered a hot cup of tea or coffee with some nice biscuits. You sit down and have a good talk to start to get to know one another. Just the perfect location to stay at. Thank you soo much Warren and Mavis, I am going to miss you.
This was such a cool experience! I don't even like kumara, but I had a great time. Ernie is larger than life and took us for a ride on a train made out of old 44 gallon drums through his garden of weird and wonderful creations. Indoors we saw how kumara are planted, picked and processed - it was actually pretty interesting! Ernie showed off more quirky tricks and inventions and told us about the area and its history. Well worth the visit.

Short but steep walk up, 100% worth it for the beautiful view at the top. Definitely worth it to wear proper walking shoes, I made this mistake and got pretty sore feet from walking in normal sneakers (in saying that, my partner wore jandals and he was fine). Bit slippery on the way down, but definitely safe as long as you're careful.
Only 300 meters but basically straight up. Recommend shoes and when it is dry. But kids loved it climbing to the top.
Beautiful view from the top. Track a little slippery (had just stopped raining). Last bit requires climbing up rocks. Hands helpful at this stage. Steep dropoffs
Views are pretty cool from up top but getting there is a whole other story. The path is more of a stairway, but with slippery steps, and when you get to the top you have to climb with cliffs on both sides.
Really beautiful view! Short climb up to the peak but requires a good level of fitness because it is very steep and can be slippery so a pair of proper shoes are essential. Took about 10-12 min to get up and the same amount of time to get down. The view was worth the climb!
A slightly muddy walk up and down due to the rain showers all weekend. But such a beautiful view at the top and it wasn't even a super clear day. Not super strenuous walk, but a small challenge. A lovely shared experience.
A semi challenging hike up to the peak lookout with many steep slopes. Please go during good weather and wear good shoes. Might get slippery when wet. The views are rewarding!
Very short hike to the top. The view is actually pretty great. Definitely worth a stop to stretch your legs if you’re driving along the west coast. There is some scrambling near the top that might be difficult for children or the elderly. Also, be careful at the top as it’s a shear drop and there are no railings or safety guards. Cool little walk though.

Place worth stopping! Not a big shop, but very beautiful. Beautiful furniture and other things and explained history a little bit. Lady working there was really nice and helpful:)
Bought a couple of small items but there are a lot of beautiful things on display. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.
What a gorgeous shop!! We stopped in here on our way back from Tane Mahuta, and we were not disappointed. Incredible Kauri furniture and lots of handmade jewellery. There is something for everyone and every budget. the staff were really kind and friendly to chat too.
Wonderful place to see so many items made from 40,000 plus years old kauri and other local trees. Also, if you want the most fantastic table they have huge long slabs for sale. They ship, so you don’t have to worry about your flight carry on allowance 🤣
Huge shop, well set out. Looking forward to seeing some photos of the new Queen
Thankyou Nelson for making my holiday VERY SPECIAL bud , AMAZING place and timber products . Wish I could stay.
Such a beautiful place to visit to view kauri furniture, not just tables, made from ancient wood. Lots of other tastefully gifts for all budgets and tastes. I take all my visitors there to get some nice gifts to take home. Friendless interested staff
