Dargaville in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Dargaville, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Dargaville is a small riverside town known as a gateway to the wild west coast of Northland, set along the scenic Northern Wairoa River. It’s a handy base for visiting the vast sands of Ripiro Beach, the historic lighthouse at Pouto Peninsula, and the ancient kauri forests of Waipoua, home to giant trees like Tāne Mahuta. The town’s agricultural and kauri-gum heritage is reflected in local museums and historic sites, while seasonal kai (food) like kumara from the surrounding farms features prominently in local eateries.
With favorites like Tokatoka Peak Lookout, muddy waters gallery, and Kumera making place, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Good Life Stores and Supahn Thai Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Dargaville while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

We loved the service, the team is very friendly. The food is well served, tasty coffee. We do recommend this place if you are planning to visit Kai Iwi lakes is nearby.

Lovely little cafe. They had gluten free options which was great! Really good coffee. Garden area out the back which was sheltered from the weather.
Phoebe M — Google review
Great lil gem in a small town, loved their chowder, tasted different from the others I have tried before, unique taste with the addition of some vegetables (I guess it was white radish). Pizzas were good too. There’s an open area at the back for those who would enjoy sitting outside.
Bella L — Google review
Went with family this morning for breakfast.... .will definitely not be going near the place again....I had quiche which which was brought out half hour before rest of food.....and could not eat it as it had a oaty bottom and was dry......the other breakfasts well where do I start....bacon not cooked properly.....toast was black and I mean black.. which they had put the burnt side face down....crepes swimming in maple syrup......kumara hash was swimming in oil.....yuck
Sandra B — Google review
We got the bagel and pork tacos which weren’t anything great, even factoring in the price. The bagel was basic asf and dry. Defs tasted waaaaaaaay better for fraction of the price. Should have just got a beer. The carrot cake was okay though. Hopefully they don’t make there coffee how they make there food.
Ngaio K — Google review
I got bacon and eggs on wonderful bread. A. Got toast with jam and a great müsli. A truely lovely breakfast. Friedly personal and oh great orange juice!!
Frank O — Google review
Food took 35 mins after ordering, it didn't seem all that busy, the crepes were doused in maple syrup, the toast was burnt, the bacon wasn't cooked enough and to top it all off watched an old dude (who worked there) yell at the wait staff, plus the chorizo was swimming in oil. Just visiting but will not be returning

Best! These guys are best in town. Bagel Benedict on the lunch menu for $20 is amazing! Definitely coming back for that again.

Pizza Takeout
Kauri Coast Pizzeria is located in Dargaville, a great base for exploring the Kauri Coast. The area is known for its heritage walks, river cruises, and the impressive Kaipara Harbour. The coast itself is lined with stunning beaches and abundant kauri trees. The pizzeria is highly recommended by visitors who praise its delicious food and friendly staff.
Best Kebab I've had in a long time. Good size, good balance of ingredients, and the bread was crisp without being crunchy. Well wrapped with minimal leakage. The food is in my belly and not my lap! Thank you for packaging it properly!!! The kebabs are first wrapped in paper, and then put it a foil bag, which is obviously the correct way around to do it. Unlike many kebab places, these guys wont make you eat tin foil 🫶
Dan A — Google review
I haven't ordered from Kauri coast in years but fancied something different. I ordered the low carb chicken iksender! Wow, was blown away. Very generous with the fresh salads, plentiful chicken too. Enough to feed 2 people! I also ordered the onion rings which were huge, seriously, not what you would expect for a side order. Will definitely order from here again. Very highly recommended.
Mary U — Google review
Fantastic pizzas! Fabulous range of flavours, generous toppings. Have loved every flavour we have tried so far and the bases are fluffy and crunchy.
Kendra M — Google review
Great and wide range of pizzas and other assorted foods. I absolutely loved the different combinations of flavors and the customer service was immaculate, with props to Eva. 10/10, would recommend to anyone passing through.

Amazing service. And the workers are always smiling. Best pizza place in town 😊

Great Pizza and nice staff. Huge side portions, we ordered 2 sides of onion rings but it was way too much. Pizza was tasty, side were great. They do lots of different deals too. Highly recommend, one of the better places to eat in Dargaville.

Short but steep walk up, 100% worth it for the beautiful view at the top. Definitely worth it to wear proper walking shoes, I made this mistake and got pretty sore feet from walking in normal sneakers (in saying that, my partner wore jandals and he was fine). Bit slippery on the way down, but definitely safe as long as you're careful.
Caprice A — Google review
Only 300 meters but basically straight up. Recommend shoes and when it is dry. But kids loved it climbing to the top.
Jacques K — Google review
Beautiful view from the top. Track a little slippery (had just stopped raining). Last bit requires climbing up rocks. Hands helpful at this stage. Steep dropoffs
Sheryl C — Google review
Views are pretty cool from up top but getting there is a whole other story. The path is more of a stairway, but with slippery steps, and when you get to the top you have to climb with cliffs on both sides.
Mischa K — Google review
Really beautiful view! Short climb up to the peak but requires a good level of fitness because it is very steep and can be slippery so a pair of proper shoes are essential. Took about 10-12 min to get up and the same amount of time to get down. The view was worth the climb!
YQ — Google review
A slightly muddy walk up and down due to the rain showers all weekend. But such a beautiful view at the top and it wasn't even a super clear day. Not super strenuous walk, but a small challenge. A lovely shared experience.
Emily C — Google review
A semi challenging hike up to the peak lookout with many steep slopes. Please go during good weather and wear good shoes. Might get slippery when wet. The views are rewarding!
Benjamin T — Google review
Very short hike to the top. The view is actually pretty great. Definitely worth a stop to stretch your legs if you’re driving along the west coast. There is some scrambling near the top that might be difficult for children or the elderly. Also, be careful at the top as it’s a shear drop and there are no railings or safety guards. Cool little walk though.

Best burger I had in a while, with beetroot. Chips used quality oil so did not taste oily and was good. Good milkshake = good food and their milkshakes were good 😀

A favorite and convenient haunt of mine growing up just around the corner. The current owner's are friendly and have lifted the standards from the prior owner's. Great kiwi takeaways with a couple of asian inspired options. I can't say I've ever been disappointed buying from here. If you're into shrimp cocktails this is where to get them. Conveniently situated on the main route north, they are well worth the stop.

Bev B — Google review
We had a fantastic visit to the Dargaville Museum this weekend. I did not know what to expect but we all truely enjoyed the various displays en collections. We went with 5 kids from 3.5-9 years and there was something to enchant each of them. I think the 3.5year old ran around the train for a full half hour trying to catch it coming out the other side of the tunnel. It was the perfect length to entertain without tiring. The reception staff were incredibly friendly and the little gift shop full of little treasures. Afterwards we had a picnic outside enjoying the sun with the lovely view! Thank You all for a great afternoon!

This is an excellent musium displaying the history of this Dargaville region. It has a vast, well assembled display of exhibits and are very well described. Staff are helpful, and the parking area is large. Incidentally we feel the entry fee is too cheap.

Great museum. Set out nicely, lots of different themed rooms, easy to read captions. Went with myself & 5 kids and they let us in for the price of a family ticket. Ie. One kid free. Kids enjoyed it & enjoyed the scavenger hunt they got given to do

Great place to bring the kids, with a scavenger hunt to spark interest and capture attention along the way. Museum and it's team clearly does great work to record and preserve local history with limited resources. Well done.

Trounson Kauri Park is a predator-free sanctuary that offers a glimpse into the ancient kauri forests of Aotearoa New Zealand. Visitors can take self-guided night-time walks to spot native species like kiwi in their natural habitat. The park features a stunning campground nestled next to lush green forests, providing an opportunity to explore the beauty of North Island's native Kauri trees.
There are so many big Kauri here. They're absolutely amazing and hide around every corner. Informative easy walk including a Weta home! Kauri dieback stations help prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease, so be sure to use the dieback stations to ensure your footware is free of any dirt when entering and exiting.
Andrea F — Google review
🌿 A Hidden Gem of Nature! Trounson Kauri Park is a peaceful and magical place for nature lovers. The well-maintained boardwalk takes you through ancient kauri trees, lush native bush, and offers a real chance to spot kiwi birds at night. It's quiet, serene, and perfect for a relaxing walk or night adventure. A must-visit if you're exploring Northland!
Jipson R — Google review
Nice easy walk on boardes walkway all the way. Lots of BIG trees and kids loved loiking for the next big one. One of the trees is estimated at 1200 years
Jacques K — Google review
Small and pretty basic camp, be sure to bring coins for the showers. Some of the electric rings for the cookers don't work and there is only one chair in the kitchen. If you follow the official signage for the park it brings you down a very long gravel road. But if you turn off closer to dargaville the road is better.
LauraEmily K — Google review
We originally visited because we had heard about being able to see kiwi. We did the whole red light torches and spent some time waiting but sadly it mustn't have been the right time. However we visited during the daytime too and really enjoyed walking around this track as there were some massive Kauri trees. It was also interesting and sad to see the devastating affect of Kauri die back as there were many dead Kauri.
D&C L — Google review
Beautiful peaceful place with many big Kauri trees, a magical easy walk. So glad some past people had the forethought not to cut them all down but save some for future generations to enjoy. I just hope people take note of the signs and protect the trees.
Miriam A — Google review
Absolutely loved staying at this campground and taking the loop walk. Facilities are clean, with fridge, cooktops, sinks, and solar heated water for showers. Toilets could use some work and soap. Did the loop walk in the day and night. No kiwis sighted, but heard. Saw lots of glow worms. The kauri were amazing and beautiful.
Jesse C — Google review
On our first camping trip to this site, we stumbled along the visitors book and read that you can see kiwi's at night. That night once it went dark we headed out, and this short walk then took us over 4 hours as we listened to the kiwis call and move around in the bush close to you. The following week we drove back with Flash lights that were covered in red cellophane (the kiwis do not notice the red light) and sat on the walking track all night watching as the kiwis' come up so close that you could almost touch them! Every now and then we make a round trip (3+ hrs drive each way) just to watch them for a few hours. This is an absolute gem and a must do experience

Good Life Stores in Dargaville is a local gem offering an array of delightful treats and goods. From the best bagels, sourdough bread, and sweet treats to a beautiful range of skincare products and candles, this store has something for everyone. The communal table provides a welcoming space to enjoy some good food and company.
I am taken aback by my beautiful salad from Good Stories as well as the lovely service and warm and inviting atmosphere. My salad had generous portions of tuna, olives, tomato, sundried tomato, gherkins, cucumber and beetroot. Everything was fresh and freshly made upon ordering. The value for money absolutely cannot be beaten anywhere, $7 for my half portion which was an ample serving. Their sandwiches, bagels and other food looked delicious too. You cannot go to our through Dargaville without stopping in.
Megan C — Google review
This store is mostly positives. They have a great selection of bulk-food staples, with glass jars available for free to fill. They also have a good zero-waste beauty section with really affordable bath bombs ($7) and other supplies. The food also looks and sounds delicious. I would 100% stop here for lunch if I was in the area again. The main negative and the reason for only 3 stars in my review is that they only have takeaway container options, including for the dine-in coffees. During the time I was sitting in the shop, most people who come here chose to dine-in, but they didn't offer a dine-in option using actual cups or plates (even for the fridge-section baked goods) which means that so many coffee cups and takeaway containers are unnecessarily ending up in landfill. That is the sole reason for my 3-star review, and I hope that in the future they introduce a non-takeaway-container option for people like me who choose to avoid disposable containers where possible. Until then if you're reading this review please bring your own reusable cup!
Theresa Y — Google review
Had a really good flat white coffee and a sourdough sandwich. My partner and I swapped sandwich halves so we could experience two different flavours. They were to die for!!!!!! Highly commend. Everything is wholesome and tasty and reasonably priced considering the high quality and choice. Food was wrapped nicely in tinfoil to keep warm, and paper bags - all true to being wholesome and organic. Don't go past this shop, there are gimmicks to entertain as well as good staff and good cooking
Shazz — Google review
Happened across this little gem by accident on a trip from out of town. I had a “flying pig” sourdough sandwich (chicken, bacon, cheese and cranberry sauce) and my daughter had a Philly Cheese. She has proclaimed it to be the best sandwich she’s ever tasted. There is also a delicious looking menu of salads, smoothies, juices and baked goods, as well as coffee and hot drinks. The prices are very reasonable! The store also sells a selection of sweets, pantry items, soaps, and an amazing looking selection of loose leaf teas (I didn’t count but at a guess I reckon there were maybe 40 varieties?!). The decor and the vibe is quirky and interesting, the owner and team very friendly. Highly recommend a stop at this shop ❤️

A fabulous coffee shop, with sandwiches that are sublime. Delicious Banoffee pie and jams and cream for just $5. Great coffee too. Great atmosphere with an original old radio playing. Try the Reuben or Beef sandwich. Yum yum. Has bulk food items too!

First time in NZ that I found a place where you can eat a beautiful, healthy salad and sandwich for a reasonable price. The portions were a good size and freshly made. My family also enjoyed the bagels and milkshake. I highly recommend it and I hope to have a chance to come back soon. Thanks!
Paulina C — Google review
I have been here many many times for coffee and other cakes and scones but this was my first time getting a sandwich off the menu .The staff was so lovely and made a sandwich for me even though it was almost pack up time . The sandwich was $14 and just had layer upon layer of corn beef , and other wonderful condiments I can’t even describe but it was fireworks in my mouth and I ate it till I felt sick because I couldn’t stop .. and even after all of that over half was left . It was probably one of the best sandwiches of my life .

I have found myself coming here more regularly lately. The staff are pleasant and the food is great. The BLT toasted being my favorite at the moment. I haven't had a bad coffee yet. You can usually find a seat though it can become very busy during lunchtime. The food is proper quality.

Ordered yesterday Father’s Day 7thSeptember25, I’m in very big regret ordering food from this restaurant. Me and my sister ordered big quantities of food, mine was $101 and hers $221 and afew cents. The food was very bland and tasted different from what it supposed to taste like, keep in mind we eat from different Thai and Asian restaurants we know our food. The meat was not cooked properly and it seems it was beaten so it can cook faster the seafood rubbery and tasteless and the kids was complaining how the food tasted weird. our family was shocked and disappointed. We couldn’t eat further. Now what I have taken in the photo will go to the animals to eat. Waste our hard earned money on food that wasn’t cooked with proper intentions that seems rushed some of the dishes wasn’t touched too all gone to waste. Shame on you!

Embark on a unique adventure with Dargaville Rail Tours, where you can ride modified golf buggies along an old railway line, passing through dairy cattle farms and picturesque countryside for a couple of hours. The tour offers the opportunity to spot various animals like calves, lambs, horses, ponies, wild piglets, and goats along the track. Knowledgeable guides provide insights into the history of the railway while serving delightful refreshments such as scones and sandwiches during the journey.
We were in Northland for only a couple days and very thankful that Dave & Shane were able to do a special run for our group to accommodate us. Great length trip, 3.5hrs is a good amount of time for a day out. They don’t currently do the longer trip after Cyclone Gabriel caused a slip up the line. Fare was very affordable compared to other rail cart operators. The personal touch that both guides brought to the trip really made it worth it, the scones were great!

Had the most amazing experience here ! I contacted them the night before to see if they might have a seat available, they were fully booked but offered me a spot on the cart with the guides, which I gladly took ! Yes it was a bit wet but the trip was tons of fun and the home made scones and coffee at the halfway point were delicious

Wow!! We were traveling through to Kai Iwi Lakes and stopped at this lovely old style themed Cafe. They were so lovely and accommodating. We asked for toasted chicken sandwiches and got to choose additional fillings all for just $4. Mum is dietary intolerant so asked if they had anything for her. They didn't but the lovely lady came back and said she would make a sandwich with chicken, no butter using Vogel Bread. It was full of chicken and only $4. Loved the funky atmosphere with old frames and a jukebox. Thank you to these beautiful people 💕

I had a great experience here a while ago. I met a beautiful batista serving me a few months back, I haven't seen her in a while but she was a sweetheart and I would love to see her again. Something about her made my coffee taste even better.

At the end of January this year, my husband and I were traveling on New Zealand's North Island. We were on the way from Tane Mahuta to Auckland and made a lunch stop in Dargaville. We had no cash with us as we had read that you can pay with credit card in New Zealand. We visited the Empire Luncheonette Café to have a little lunch. At the counter we ordered coffee, a sandwich for my husband and an apple-cake from the cabinet for me. My husband took out his credit card to put it on the cash terminal, but there was a note saying that credit cards were not accepted. We were in trouble! We told the lady at the counter that we hadn‘t any cash or any bankcard from New Zealand. After a short chat, we said „sorry and bye“ and turned to the door. Just as we reached the door, she called us to come back. Another customer in the cafe heard our conversation and offered to pay our bill. Incredible!! The Sandwich and my apple-cake was very delicious and the coffees absolutely lovely. The staff were very kind. We are still overwhelmed by the helpfulness and friendliness of the people there. Thank you so much.

Nestled in the charming town of Dargaville, New Asian Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Although it currently doesn't have a menu available online, patrons rave about its mouthwatering offerings. During a recent visit, one enthusiastic diner enjoyed the Sweet n Sour Fish, which was not only generous in portion but also bursting with flavor. The fried rice and noodles complemented the meal perfectly, while the addition of authentic chili sauce added just the right kick for spice lovers.
Good food, good service, beautiful place and good portions! And the best rice with prawns ever.
Roberto R — Google review
Disappointed with Pricing and Quality I ordered vegetable noodles and was surprised to learn that the takeaway price was $19, but for dine-in, it was double. Wonder what kind of rule that is! On top of that, the noodles were disappointing—just onions and cabbage, barely any other vegetables. The taste wasn’t great either. Definitely not worth it.

Food is ok, just. The smorgasbord lacks freshness and i'm not sure why but the chow mein is more like soup. The oil tastes like it should have been changed ages ago. A lot of the meals are pre-made and then microwaved. Ok as a last resort.

My husband and I were looking for somewhere to have lunch today and saw that this restaurant was open. We sat down at a clean table, and I used the clean toilet facilities. We then proceeded to order from the delicious and varied menu, and the photos of each dish made that easier for us. The couple who I think are husband and wife were efficient, friendly, and proficient! The meals were so delicious, fresh and well, just delicious!!! We moved from an entree through to mains that we decided to share for the experience, and then I finished off with a dessert....baked banana with ice-cream. The battered banana was crisp as you cut through the coating to the banana. We started with a Speights and finished with a green tea. No need for dinner tonight. We will definitely eat there again. The cost was very reasonable. They also have hot food to take away.

Indian restaurant
Shiraz Indian and European Family Restaurant is a delightful dining establishment known for its delectable Indian cuisine. Patrons particularly enjoy their Butter Chicken and Naans, which are accompanied by excellent service. Additionally, customers are treated to complimentary poppadoms when dining in. While the restaurant receives four stars overall, some visitors find their pizza offerings less impressive. Although they offer traditional options like Hawaiian, most of their pizzas incorporate curry, which may not be to everyone's taste.
The food at this place was amazing! I've been craving a good curry for ages and it totally hit the spot. A few of us also got the pizza and nachos, and they were delicious too. The staff were friendly and on top of everything, and the restaurant had a really nice atmosphere. The only weird thing was we were the only ones there, which was a shame because the food is incredible. We were just visiting Dargaville for a family event, but we'll definitely be back next time we're in town.

Highly recommended. Lovely quiet dining experience, Awesome food and great service. It might be in a small town but its as good as the big centres. It was the best butter chicken I've ever eaten. The pizza was great too, of course. I asked for extra hot and it was the flavor I really wanted. I'm going back to Auckland tomorrow. I think I will miss that taste. I want to take the chef to Auckland.

The food was good and the service was lovely! I was craving a pub feed so I ended up getting a steak and it was good! Cooked just how I like it with some rosemary on top too. The chips and gravy were yum and I would recommend getting the sirloin. I also ordered the chilli prawns to share with my partner and at an entree size the portion was decent. The prawns were amazing and I liked how the tails were crunchy enough to eat. The desserts were simple but nice and it was a good experience trying kolfi for the first time. Overall I’d recommend you go here!

We have just finished a delicious takeaway meal (spring rolls, red curry chicken, and drunken noodles with pork) from this place. Wow! Yum!! We had starter and two meals and soft drinks as they are not licensed. The food was good hot but basic for a Thai Resturant. None of the nice decorative artistic vegetables you expect when served this cuisine. It was a takeaway just served on a plate in a very cold side room on a wooden kitchen table, which we were shuffled into when we arrived whilst the main part was empty. Cutlery wrapped in thin paper napkin. They are a takeaway cafe just changing to a Resturant, awaiting for licensing, but I do feel they need to step up their service and presentation.

A cute little 20 seater unlicensed restaurant. Was very busy noting many takeaway orders but we dined in along with a few other patrons. I had the chicken satay appetiser along with chicken cashew nut main. My wife had the honey pork spare ribs. All dishes were well portioned and very tasty. Some Thai restaurants I have been to in the past the food has tasted much the same and bland but these dishes had their own unique flavour. Very tasty.Based on our experience tonight I would highly recommend.

This is not an official information centre, it is not an "I" sight centre, do not rely on verbal information given by the owners about accomodation in the area of Dargaville and surrounding places?? Customers need to visit in person individual accomodation businesses themselves to get the correct prices and other infomation. Do not rely on this centre for fair reviews as only selected businesses are voiced and promoted. Please only make payments directly to businesses in the area, as an old system was in place whereby the unofficial infomation centre collected the money first off customers for services given by a third party.(accomadation). The Kauri Gallery has beautiful works of art, well done. Tourists/locals BEWARE of asking about accomadation requirements!!!

Definitely my choice for a bakery in Dargaville. The other bakery in tiwn is good, this bakery is the best. Very busy on Saturday morning! Great selection of sandwiches, pies, sweets, hot & cold drinks and hot food. Reasonable prices and great sevice with a smile. I recommend the seafood pie (another first for me) and the flat white coffee.

A huge selection of items to choose from - sandwiches, sweets, hot food, pies, salads and full meals. Just remember if later in the day, the longer the food has been sitting in the cabinets. Fabulous meal, had mussel fritters, so delicious. Been there many times, and always had such good meals. I often wish that more restaurants served home cookery, cos it is so good. Six of us at our table, and everyone loved their meal.

Day 4

Proximity is everything
For day 4, we bundled attractions like Northern Wairoa Golf Club and Department of Conservation Te Tai Kauri / Kauri Coast Office and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 6 hours.

Northern Wairoa Golf Club

Golf club
The Northern Wairoa Golf Club offers an affordable and welcoming 18-hole course with picturesque sea views and tree-lined fairways. It's considered a hidden gem in New Zealand, featuring a layout that seamlessly flows from hole to hole. The course is particularly stunning when the Pohutukawa trees are in bloom. Visitors praise the friendly members and recommend taking advantage of the club's bar after playing.
Wow, what an amazing club. The course is stunning, especially when the Pohutukawa trees are in bloom. The greens and fairways are incredible considering they have only 1 green keeper. We stayed in our campervan for a couple of nights and played the course twice. The members were so friendly and welcoming and we had a ball. Could have stayed longer and played again but we had other plans. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area, you won't regret it

Heather tournament, catered for by 9 hole ladies for lunch after the game, their variety all home made lovely with dessert as well. Great efforts ladies but then your club us known for great efforts.

This golf course is most certainly one of NZ's many hidden gems. Northern Wairoa is simply stunning, the layout just flows seamlessly from hole to hole and before you know it, you are walking up the eighteenth wondering where your day has gone. Some superb holes on here 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16 & 17 are all well worthy of an individual mention but its the 18th that captures my imagination; a truly stunning finishing hole; but it must be said that as a collection of 18 this place takes some beating. The greens here are top quality too, as is the general presentation of the course in general, but try not to spend too much time above the hole. In general, one of my personal favorites. 😃 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Enjoyed a very friendly welcome, and played the very nice, long , open course by ourselves

Loved this course. Have been back a few times. Lovely locals and a great rate playing with members!

Mean greens and challenging course, if you ever get over this way you have to go for a hit here..

Jack and I had a great time playing this lovely course. Keith was very helpful in sorting us a cart and the members in the bar after playing were very friendly and you won't beat the bar prices anywhere. The course was one of the best we have played so don't miss this one out.

Park
Harding Park, located near Dargaville, is a historical hub featuring attractions like the Dargaville Museum and Kaipara Vintage Machinery Park. The park also houses the Po Tu o Rangi Pa site and offers activities such as Disc Golf. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of Dargaville town and the Northern Wairoa River from the hill. Additionally, Harding Park is home to the Dargaville Maritime Museum and a small trail network for outdoor enthusiasts.
Great museum of local history and industries, with a wonderful focus on actual people from the era and area. Museum well laid out in rooms by topic. A great feeling of being able to touch and feel where appropriate. Great friendly helpful volunteers too.

Beautiful scenic views of Dargaville and surrounds. Lovely short or long walk, through tracks
Sue R — Google review
Lovely grounds and people, the museum is a must see,it's a pity the farm machinery museum wasn't open. Being able to park overnight in in our motorhome was great thank you
Gordon C — Google review
I heard about this small trail network and decided to give it a go. Just past the gates (which lock daily so check times.) on the left you’ll see a large sign and a bike gate. I parked here under the trees. There is also parking at the top but I prefer to ride out instead of up when I can. There is only one up trail and it’s short. At the top there are four downhill trails all around 300m long and brings you back to the uphill trail. So it’s great loops. There are jumps along all four trails which can all be rolled over. All trails are graded 3. A lot of fun and a great place to hone in some skills and work on your fitness.

I go to Harding Park twice a week as a volunteer in the workshop at the Kaipara Heritage Machinery Museum, restoring, repairing and maintaining the wide range of vintage agriculture machinery which is on display in the main museum. While you are up on the hill you can enjoy the wonderful views over Dargaville town and the mighty Northern Wairoa River. Also in Harding Park, and not to be confused with the Machinery Museum, is the Dargaville Maritime Museum. Also worth a look at.

Lovely stop-over. Wonderful views of the Kaipara Harbour.

It's the location of the Museum, our reason for being there. The views are superb and the museum a great place to explore. NZ Dalmatian him diggers are covered exceptionally well. The museum gives you a great insight of life in the early days of Northland.

Really pleasant experience super lovely couple fun to ride in the barrel train the little church was so cute being the tiniest church in NZ
Latisha — Google review
Amazing short stop in Dargville, don't just driveby, stop and see the smallest church in NZ and jump on the cart ride through the secret track or just have a chat with extremely friendly host and grab some fresh kumara. Highly recommend.

May and Ernie are incredible. The Kumara Box Museum is amazing. Everyone need to go there.
João M — Google review
Awesome place. Thanks Ernie really enjoyed the "train" ride and the show
Marcel K — Google review
This is a roadside attraction par excellence. May's show was absolutely delightful, and the cabinet of curiosities was packed with everything imaginable. The kitchen is clean and well stocked. We had a lovely view of the sunset across the fields when we camped. We were certain we would be murdered, one of the weirdest places I've ever been, cannot recommend it enough.
Lauryn L — Google review
Funky place to stay in a camper, and your fee for overnight gets you in to see museum as well as a lounge area, kitchen, and shower. It’s an eclectic collection honouring Kumara history, nautical and marine life, and a bunch of other miscellaneous things that captured the owners fancy. In the morning I walked over the New Zealand’s smallest church. Kumara Ernie was away so I didn’t get to meet him, or see a show in their theatre. This really is a one of a kind place for being so unique, and the hosts are such lovely, friendly people!
Sally H — Google review
The absolute best people, amazing hospitality, lovely and genuine married couple who runs The Kumara Box. When you arrive they welcome you into there home and you get offered a hot cup of tea or coffee with some nice biscuits. You sit down and have a good talk to start to get to know one another. Just the perfect location to stay at. Thank you soo much Warren and Mavis, I am going to miss you.
Ellie W — Google review
This was such a cool experience! I don't even like kumara, but I had a great time. Ernie is larger than life and took us for a ride on a train made out of old 44 gallon drums through his garden of weird and wonderful creations. Indoors we saw how kumara are planted, picked and processed - it was actually pretty interesting! Ernie showed off more quirky tricks and inventions and told us about the area and its history. Well worth the visit.

Fish & chips restaurant
Sharkeys is a local gem with a lot of character and a great menu. The chicken burger with cranberry sauce was juicy and tender, while the loaded wedges were cooked well and served generously. The indoor and outdoor seating areas provide options for enjoying cocktails after 5 pm. Customers can also enjoy wine while waiting for their takeaway orders. Although some dishes received mixed reviews, such as the beef patty in the burger, overall, Sharkeys offers good food at great prices.
Beautiful unique place, restaurant, takeaway, public bar. tracy and her staff were very patient and polite. No pressure to order before your ready, A1 recommend to anyone visiting or staying at Baylys beach holiday park.

Super friendly & accommodated my fussy order perfectly! Bar being attached is a great idea! Lucky I dont live in the area or would become a regular!
Louise W — Google review
Less than one star The website menu not up to date. Settled for a Chicken avo burger. For $10.50, it was small with very little avocado. McDonald's would do better! Not to mention I was told it would come with fries...nope. Then the lady who served me backtracked when confronted. Needless to say, would not recommend, nor will I waste my money there again. Nothing could possibly rectify the terrible experience I had...left an unhappy customer.

I love this local resturant!!! its hot so much character and great menu and good food! go and enjoy it for yourself. They have an indoor and outdoor area , in the sun or under the shade and they even have cocktails after 5pm!! im definitely going back!! love this little gem

N8ce place to stop for lunch. We all had fish and chips. It was very good. Nice portion size and great prices. It was a bit chilly, so some of us got hot mochas. Yummy! After lunch, we had some of their ice cream. We loved the large scoops!

Thought we would pop in for a Cocktail at the local after seeing the sign during the day for there “Cocktail Happy Hour” Teenager walked in before us all to get a soft drink - Shannon swears at him as she says ‘I hate £#{¥…. kids “ - then as we start ordering she is very rude, grumpy - others in the bar also mentioned her rudeness!!!! So then ‘very weak’ drinks arrive which were like mint n soda for the Mojitos, curdled milk in pina colada, and so much Worcester in the Bloody Mary it looked more like a Pooey Jane Then to top in off there was floating bit in the drink which we discovered where the paint on the glasses One of us mentioned this to Duty Manager Shannon who grumpily said must be our fault …. Sorry Sharkey’s we would have spent a lot more $$$$$ if we had a better experience Won’t do that again Oh and by the way I couldn’t find what ‘Food Grade’ cert anywhere ??????? This should be clearly displayed….
