An interesting place. Agree $20 entry fee a little over the top, but the $2 charge for the 110 metre forest slide is a bargain and a great ride, regardless of your age. Found the swamp interesting and the information boards educational. The 1600 metres of boardwalks takes about an hour to navigate. Although we saw pademelons we did not see any Tasmanian devils.
In a group of 4 we arrived early. Firstly the loos are fab. Modern, and loos with a view!! We decided not to go down the slide after much deliberation. There was lots of ash in the air, and we were told it might be a slow ride down. So we headed down the path leading to the bottom. A great walk, and very impressed with the maintenance of the trails. We belong to a Field Nat. group so spend a lot of time in this type of environment. However we enjoyed it, and with our little knowledge of plants etc we found lots of interesting things. I think this is a wonderful and safe way for people who want to enjoy the beautiful Australian bush. We watched a few coming down the slide and they loved it. So all in all a lovely day out. Just one tiny comment. We have read all the reviews and didn't know what to expect re staff etc. However we went with open minds & really just took care of ourselves, so had little interaction.
Modern and well presented entrance and cafe. We had some nice soup that unfortunately came with a stale bread roll. The slide ride to the bottom was good fun. Well set out maze board walks amongst the pretty rain forest, although were very slippery in areas (a bit of chicken wire would help with grip) and generally needed a bit more up keep (removal of branches from walk ways, cleaning of signs, fixing broken seats). Great view from the loo.
We went 28 April 2017 and found it very expensive for a walk in the forest we had to negotiate ourselves- $20 each !! And an additional $2 a ride each for the slide. Boardwalk was very slippery and even with walking boots we still fell.Nothing to see most of the time , the exhibits are old ,hidden and not interesting. I brought people from Melbourne here but definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. Also children have to be 8 to go on the slide - info we only found out when we arrived. It was boring, expensive and definitely dismal. A long drive from Wynyard to a disappointing place and as a Tasmanian resident I was humiliated.
Cool scenery and great information. Going down the slide hurt your neck though and it wasn't very enjoyable. When we came out at the bottom we enjoyed looking at the information signs and plants. Long hike back up to the car park and cafe area though. Good day trip.
A good place to bring young kids, educational for them and will fill in time. Reminiscent of an Alice in Wonderland theme with meandering boardwalks, abstract art, surreal sculptures and odd and random signs reading "look up" and "sit here". For adults with even a basic knowledge of forests and natural sciences/geology, this experience is not worth the $20 entry fee.
Good fun to be had on the slide, and the walks were interesting and educational. The walk back up can be a challange (it's a clear and wide path, but long and steep) however all worth the effort. As it was off season, the cafe was limited so we did not use it and cannot rate that.
Loved the walk, very educational as well as a peaceful walk through this fascinatingly old forest. One comment I would make is that it needs a bit of maintenance. We had to pick up a few of the sign post to read them as they had rusted out at the bottom and fallen off the path. And the artwork has seen better days: needs a bit of TLC, apart from that we spent a couple hours in the serenity ☺️

Laura was a very entertaining and knowledgeable guide to this special area. We felt we had completed the historical arc of the Van Diemen’s Land Company that began at Highfields almost 200 years ago through Laura’s many stories of how the land has been used over the centuries for shifting pastoral purposes, but we also learned so much more. We heard about the vast wind farm that contributes such a significant percentage of Tassie’s power generation, its future development, and its environmental safeguards. We learned about local wildlife, particularly Tassie devils that are thriving here free from Facial Tumour disease We saw Cape Barron geese! The landscape itself is stunning- views to the Southern Ocean and windswept Cape Grim, and to some of the Bass Strait Islands. Our trip to Tassie has been full of wonders, and this will be up there with the best of them!
A tour that we have had on our list for years, well worth the wait. Spectacular views clean crisp air, so lucky that the rain held off. 🙏Thank you Laura for sharing your knowledge about this unique part of the world 🌎
Very informative. Great tour guide. Spectacular scenery. Cleanest air in the world proven from regular air samples taken at Cape Grim. Local and aboriginal history. Absolutely worth doing.
A must do! Very informative and Laura is a wealth of knowledge. Explained not just about the wind farms but all about the history of the land, indigenous past and VDLs history Highly recommended.
Absolutely amazing place to visit - Laura is a font of knowledge about the area and it's history, and the tour is a great way to learn more about a remote but beautiful part of Tassie!
Thanks Laura, You are such a passionate women regarding the Woolnorth area, especially your heritage. You brought a tear to our eyes when you told us your story. We never felt rushed throughout the tour and we appreciated your honesty and point of view. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tasmania. The weather gods were also in our favour, We are very lucky people. Cheers Lex and Julie Lowry
How lucky were we. My wife and I were the only guests on this tour led by the Awesome Laura. The weather was great so the views were outstanding. Laura's knowledge was only surpassed by her passion for this pristine part of the world. Definitely a tour to put on your bucket list.
Disappointed that there was not much more to experience than from public areas. Wind farm info is available on net, historical buildings was a shearing shed and Laura (guide) was uneccessarily pretty rude to a couple of guests. Morning tea was an ordinary rock cake and cuppa. The most underwhelming overpriced tour in 6 fantastic weeks in fantastic Tasmania!

An absolutely amazing day with Rob and his trusty Landcruiser, touring the Tarkine. Rob knows his stuff when it comes to the local history, fauna and flora. Morning tea and lunch were spectacular. As a bonus, Rob took us "seriously" 4wd driving onto the beach. A totally spectacular day and we look forward to our next visit to take his Balfour Mine tour.
Brilliant. We got to see areas we wouldn't have seen if we drove ourselves, and we learned a lot. Rob is extremely knowledgeable about the Tarkine area and a great tour guide. Lunch and morning tea were fantastic. Highly recommended.
Today, my partner and I took a whole-day Tall Timbers Adventure Tour. We took in the breathtaking sights of the Tarkine, the tranquillity and intrigue of Balfour, and so much more. Our guide, Rob, offered a wealth of local knowledge and easy conversation that made us feel incredibly welcome and thoroughly interested. Morning tea and lunch were both delicious inclusions. In our experience, this was a perfect, hassle-free, value-for-money way to spend a day on the North-West Coast of Tassie.

Toilets are a bit far and other wise it’s great
A vast expanse of solitary sand leading to one of Tasi's most dramatic views.
