Absolutely amazing 2 night tour, blessed with fabulous weather and wildlife. The crew and food exceeded standards, thank you Alex, the most knowledgeable and friendliest nature guide out there, Glenn, Hillary, Grace and John (compliments to the chef- have never eaten better in my life). This is a must do if you’re in the Otago/Southland region and an unforgettable tranquil yet entertaining experience. If you don’t make the effort, you will never see such stunning landscape and scenery as this.
An absolute fantastic overnight cruise into doubtful sound. The „Navigator“ is a very nice ship with nice cabins (bath en suite), a nice dining room and two decks for enjoying the wonderful time. The food was very good (snacks on arrival, buffet for dinner, breakfast) and drinks were at normal price. Besides the cruise we enjoyed a kajak tour and the captain allowed us to enjoy a swim in the Tasman sea. The staff was really extraordinary and made this overnight cruise so special. And the Guide on board provided very interesting facts about almost everything in doubtful Sound, incl a 30min presentation. At night, stargazing was so impressive! Thanks to everyone, this was really a great experience.
Fantastic, fantastic trip. We expected a lot on the overnight trip aboard the Navigator, and it exceeded our expectations. Don’t come expecting to sleep! There is so much to see and do. Staterooms were very nice, food amazing and the crew was cheerful and ever present. Kayaking was great and a brisk fjord swim was just the ticket. Would have stayed for a week. Special shoutout to Captain Dave and Brock, the naturalist. Amazing trip!
From ticketing to the end of the day RealNZ were organised, engaging, and knowledgeable. We had a great experience on the water and the bus trip over Wilmot Pass was interesting and enjoyable with great commentary from the drivers. The boat skippers were extremely professional and also sharing current and historical information about Lake Manapouri and Doubtful Sound. There was plenty of wildlife to see on the day and an excellent quiet moment beneath a waterfall.
It is hard to put into words how much we enjoyed our overnight cruise. What seemed expensive ended up being amazing value for Money. We were looked after from the moment we checked in until we disembarked. The staff were incredible, the food was top quality. You didn’t stop feeding us!. With water activities and a nature specialist on board the trip was not only breathtakingly beautiful, but informative too. Well done Real NZ. Richard and Ali.
We had the most amazing time on the overnight Navigator from the boat trip to the bus ride over the Wilmot pass to being delivered to the Navigator. The staff were awesome and all so knowledgeable food accommodations swimming kayaking exceptional And got to meet so many different nationalities who were just as blown away with what NZ has to offer
Fantastic day trip, albeit getting there might be a bit tiresome. It also a bit weather dependent from what I heard from the guides, but we were lucky with calm and sunny November day and it was totally stunning. Shout out to our driver Dan, he is the Absolute Unit of Wholesome - great driving, great chat, great stories, great charisma. Adding 6th star to already 5-star trip.
Well organised cruise, friendly staff, we took a lunch package which was also very good. The Doubtful Sound is so very beautiful, and we enjoyed the little foray into the Tasman to see the seals and penguins ("rough sea warnings" for those less steady on their feet were provided well in advance each time, as well). It is still a group trip, meaning many other people (134 on our cruise), but while we tend to prefer smaller crowds it did not feel crowded on the ships themselves and limiting access like this does does help in conserving nature in the area. The overnight cruise seems to involve a smaller ship and might be more suited to those preferring a more intimate experience.

We had a fabulous time on a recent overnight cruise on Southern Secret with Dave and Jenny as our hosts. We could not fault this trip: the food was fresh and plentiful, the bedroom was spacious and clean, the sleep was deep and peaceful, the weather gave us surprises with the views of the high mountain tops, and the scenery was jaw droopingly beautiful. There was fishing, kayaking and swimming, not to mention the photographic opportunities at every moment! Highly recommend this trip.
We did the overnight tour. Sean and Juanita were incredible. You are in for a treat if you have them for your crew. The visuals were incredible and the food was absolutely delicious (shout out again to Juanita). We swam, kayaked and Sean even got us under a small waterfall.
What a fantastic experience! Dave and Jenny are the sweetest hosts imaginable to a small group of strangers that they expertly lead through Doubtful sound and surrounding sounds and fjords (yes, there is a difference which they will explain!) on a 24 hour, overnight tour. Food, drink (non alcoholic),sights, sounds, smells and warmth included. Highly recommended! Sandro & Carolien
We just returned from a Doubtful Sound - Southern Secrets Fiordland overnight cruise. I This was an amazing small boat cruise - we only had 7 of us on the boat (I think max is 12)! We went in the spring (November) and while it was rainy, that meant a zillion waterfalls ! Captain Sean drove the boat right up the waterfall and we caught lobster for dinner, too. Juanita was a fantastic chef. Delicious dinner! This is a must do. Small boat cruise is the best way to the Fiords.
7/11/25 A fantastic experience. Shaun and Wanita were amazing. We were well looked after Shaun shared his amazing knowledge of sailing and nature and Wanita fed us well with her lovely cooking. It was a unique and cosy experience aboard with a small group. The cabin was functional and well maintained. We saw dolphins and penguins. Highly recommend the experience of sailing on Southern Secret.
We had a dream two week+ trip in NZ, with many memorable experiences. This overnight trip really stood out as the highlight! David and Jenny were awesome guides and hosts in every way. The boat was comfortable and the views spectacular at every turn. Jenny artfully prepared our fresh catches into a scrumptious dinner. We saw penguins, dolphins, and sea birds along with at least a dozen phenomenal waterfalls. If you are even remotely considering this trip you owe it to yourself to go!
Super one day and one night trip on the Southern Secret. We were lucky enough to have Adam & James looking after us and they were superb hosts. The lunch, dinner and breakfast were excellent with plenty of great freshly caught and cooked food. This isn’t the most luxurious of boats I’ve been on, but every en suite room was supplied with lovely bedding and was very clean. The bed itself was surprisingly comfy. Despite quite a lot of rain - which was great for the waterfalls, we managed to get some great fishing in between downpours. Would highly recommend one night on Southern Secret if you’re looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy some like minded company on the beautiful Doubtful Sound. We chose this over Milford Sound despite it being a little harder to get to as it’s much, much quieter than Milford Sound. Many thanks
This tour was amazing! Want to give a shout out to Kira! One of the staff members! She went above and beyond for all the customers! She was amazing! Also the driver really made the experience, pulled over to see wildlife and pulling up close to a water fall to get the mist was AMAZING

The most wonderful experience of our NZ trip. We took Deep Cover for an overnight cruise of Doubtful Sound and it was an experience of a lifetime, from exploring the various arms, to kayaking the Sound, to catching our dinner and sailing with the dolphins. Truly unforgettable! Thank you Diane, Chris and Travis for making our trip so memorable. The experience began from the time we got into the van for the journey to Deep Cove where Chris gave a commentary of the locale and from his own experience in the area. We got on the boat in time for a sumptuous lunch of crayfish (Rock Lobster to the rest of the world) and salad. The lobster was super fresh and crunchy, so delectable! This followed an hour long kayaking session and fishing. I've not had much success in the past but this trip, I managed to snag about 5 or 6 fishes, of which 2 would be for dinner. My daughter caught a school shark and was an experience, from the "fight", retrieving the shark to letting it go. We cruised around around the Sound to catch glimpses of seals, penguins, dolphins and fishing at the Tasman sea (for our dinner and the shark) and closed the evening with a meal of venison, our freshly caught fish and of course, with fresh fish, we had sashimi.. multiple rounds of sashimi. Travis and Chris showed us their crayfish traps, the bait (the unused parts of our fish catch) and releasing the few that were too small and not legal to take. Sustainability in action. All in, a wonderful trip; most memorable of all our trips.
Our decision to join Deep Cove Charters was based on the small group setting and family owned company. Throughout the trip, you could tell that Chris and his son Travis were experts with regards to the Doubtful Sound's geography, wildlife and local cuisine. This excursion was a highlight of our two week trip through the South Island. Not only did we get to kayak through the sound, fish for the group's food, enjoy the sunset and sunrise, but we also made great friendships with the other guests on the boat. It was a terrific time.
Had an absolutely amazing overnight cruise with 6 couples (maximum). We had an unbelievable amount of crayfish for lunch with a yummy salad. We really enjoyed fishing (me for the first time!) and all the information Chris told us about Doubtful Sound. Whilst I was busy fishing, 7 others went kayaking and had a lovely time. Fresh fish (that we caught!) for dinner and a delicious venison pie also. We were encouraged to bring a bottle of wine and there was a large fridge to store all of this too! Comfy cabins, lovely breakfast and a highly recommended trip! If you want a small boat, personalised experience, without the hoards of tourists, this is the trip for you!! 10/10!
Unparalleled experience. Uncertainty soon became wonder and exhilaration. We had a fantastic 24 hours cruising the scenic waterways, whales and more whales, penguins, fishing for dinner and enjoying the company of Chris, Tracy and the other guests. I highly recommend Deep Cove Charters above all the others. Just book it, show up and leave the rest to them.
Wow, just wow! We had a totally fantastic overnight trip out on Doubtful Sound with Captain Chris and first mate Jenny. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the scenery was breath-takingly beautiful. The meals were mouth-watering and included fresh crayfish and blue cod. We were encouraged to fish for our dinner which was fun and produced great results. The kayaking was peaceful and the (very short) swim was "bracing." We were lucky enough to see pods of dolphins with their babies which was simply delightful. Thank you so much Diane, Chris and Jenny for such an awesome experience one which we'll never forget.
What a fabulous experience we had with Deep Cove Charters on an overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound. Spectacular scenery, excellent weather, terrific food, and great service. Along with the added bonus of seeing a whale, dolphins, seals and penguins. The fishing and kayaking was great too. Thank you Chris and the team for a such a memorable experience.
That was such an amazing and breathtaking experience! Diane was really great to communicate with and Chris and Travis were amazing hosts on the boat. Their explanations were on point, the food very yummy and we were able to go kayaking and do some fishing. It's definitely worth the money and if we come back, we will definitely book this tour again. That was the highlight of our vacation and a must do while being there!
Wow. What an experience! We were tossing up whether to do an overnight at Doubtful or Milford Sound, and I'm so glad that we chose Doubtful Sound with Deep Cove Charters. It's much less busy and you get a lot more time on the boat and to do activities. We kayaked, fished, saw a lot of wildlife. Di got us all sorted on land and Chris and Travis took care of us on the water. It was such an incredible and personalised experience - I'd say the highlight of our South Island journey. If you want to see great sights but still be completely relaxed, this is the trip for you.

We had a fantastic trip to Doubtful Sound. Our guides Blake and Napier were really friendly and shared lots of interesting information about the area and wildlife with us. The day was really well organised which is important when there are so many different elements to the journey. The scenery was beautiful and for large parts of the day it felt like we were the only group on the sound. Highlights for us included a group of dolphins coming to swim alongside our kayaks and a dip in the sound at the end of the trip - cold but invigorating. Would definitely recommend this trip and company to others.
Fantastic pick for the day. Honestly was a better experience than our cruise of Milford Sound. We had a lovely opportunity to go out with just me and my wife so we had a private experience. Mitchell and Blake were great to spend the day with, and Blake taught us all about local plants and animals in a very organic way. Definitely recommend!
We had the best day with Doubtful Sounds Kayak! The crew was all so nice and fun (and knowledgeable), we got to see the most beautiful views, and lucked out with fantastic weather too. Would highly highly recommend this kayak tour!! So much better option vs. the shorter half day boat tours, and way more fun!
What an incredible excursion. We had a near-perfect day kayaking through Doubtful Sound. The logistics are professionally executed, smooth like butter, and truly all-around lovely. Blake & Napier were our guides for the day. They both grew up in the area, and know it intimately. Blake went the extra mile to really immerse us into the experience with educating us about the flora, fauna, and Māori roots. We even saw 3 Fiordland crested penguins! The group is limited to 10, so you get to chat with others from around the world if that’s something you enjoy, and really take in the quiet peace of this incredible part of the world. This experience was truly one of the major highlights of our trip and reassured us that we made the right choice visiting Doubtful Sound during our short time here, rather than Milford Sound. Thank you to the whole team at DSK!
We really enjoyed doing the day trip to Doubtful Sound in February. All the logistics were really well organized and we felt very confident in the guides and their decision-making about how to adapt to the conditions to keep it safe and fun. Gear was good and we stayed warm and happy despite a (classic Fiordland) rainy day. The Sound is beautiful and we felt very lucky to be able to get so deep into the wilderness and experience it. We'd visited Milford a few days before and this is a very different feel - much more primeval. It's a long day but totally worth it and we'd highly recommend!
This crew treats you to a marvelous day of Kayaking in a remote, quiet and magical part of Fiordland. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable and added many nice touches to the day. They took good care of us and taught us so much about local lore, flora and geology. We’re still smiling from the amazing time we had.
Can not recommend this company enough! I had the most incredible time yesterday with the crew going around Doubtful sound. The guides were funny and packed full of knowledge! Was lucky enough to have the best weather for our trip and this was absolutely a highlight of my time in beautiful New Zealand. If you’re wanting to kayak the fjords- this is your sign to book with these guys!
Amazing stuff! Shoutout to Blake, Wolfie and Napier for running this trip and being absolute legends out on the water and guiding the group. For anyone wanting a lasting memory and a once in a lifetime experience, we'd highly recommend booking this trip out to Doubful Sound with them. With best regards, The Lakefront Backpacker Staff

We can't thank Ray and Jessie enough for showing us their amazing alpacas and beautifully hand knitted shawl/ blanket. It's much appreciated! ♥️ These alpacas are well loved and taken cared. Very lucky ones.
We really did have a great time here. To know more about Alpaca and experience to feed them was priceless. Thank you
Jessi was really friendly. She did a great introduction to the alpacas and her farm. You can get really up close to the alpacas and feed them. If you want to see fluffy alpacas come before summer starts!
Oh what fun we had here. We came to visit the shop and Ray was just getting ready to take a group out to see the alpaca's so we joined. This was such a memorable experience being up close and personal with these cute little animals. He and his wife have the perfect set up here where you get to visit the various paddocks housing different ages one by one. We had an absolute blast here and it will definitely be high on the list of memories we take away from NZ
The host was very sweet and kind lady. While we were on the way to Queenstown, we saw this Alpacas farm and stopped to take pictures. These Alpacas have won many medals that are displayed in their shop. We bought some delicious honey locally made.
Ray was extremely generous with his time. His animals are beautiful and products are high quality! Great stop on our way to Te Anau.
All the Alpacas were so cute!!! Ray gave a fantastic tour as well! He was really informative and very helpful with all our questions. Worth the stopover from Manapouri to Invercargill.
The most amazing yarn I have ever worked with! I am making a special project right now (baby blanket) with the Alpaca yarn and it is easily the loveliest yarn I have worked with in over 40 years of knitting and crocheting. The service at this online shop is superb, so helpful and truly rapid delivery, can't recommend them highly enough!
