Our first, and completely unplanned, visit & what a wonderful surprise. We were made to feel really welcome by the staff, and the local community, & were thrilled to find so many orchids in close proximity to the centre.
Not easy to find, drive into Ongerup and out the other side if driving west. Staff lovely and doing their best to help endangered mallee fowl. Very informative and good little cafe on site. Would visit again if close by, worth seeking out.
This is not like a zoo. There are only two mallee fowl currently in a small enclosure. The centre is responsible for hatching, raising and releasing birds to increase their chances of survival. They are also very timid so be patient and they'll come into view. The information displayed is excellent, for all ages, and about the habitat too. Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I felt the $12 entry was reasonable to support their conservation efforts. We visited at the start of the wildflower season and theres a short marked trail to the right of the building where I found some orchids and other wildflowers beginning to appear. The cafe has good prices and the chips and coffee were excellent. There is also a gift shop, exhibition gallery space and the local library in the building.
We called in on a whim after driving past many times on the highway. We were provided with a tasty and fresh lunch with good coffee. All the staff were very friendly and it had a great atmosphere. The facilities were really good and quite disability friendly. We also enjoyed the display area.
Amazingly dedicated team looking after the Aussie Battler ground dwelling bird the humble Mallee fowl. Lots to see for a small entrance fee and a cafe as well. If you are passing by then this place is well worth a visit for a look into the history of the area, the land clearing, a coffee & snack then go watch the elusive birds doing what they do best which is forage and keep a wary eye for predators. A fly net is also a good idea outdoors as there were a million flies in your face.
Interesting write up on history of Malleefowl conservation efforts locally and the biological cycle of the fowl. The center is also about the only cafe in town. The town is a strategic half way stopping point for the long drive between major towns. A good break from the long drive.
We made a special trip out to Ongerup to visit the Mallee Fowl Sanctuary and it was well worth the trip. We enjoyed a wonderful Ploughman’s Picnic and coffees in the cafe before our time in the Yongerup Mallee Fowl Centre information displays. It was wonderful to learn about the community commitment to helping the local Mallee Fowl populations recover. And I learned so much about Mallee Fowl life cycles! We thoroughly enjoyed the aviary experience, seeing what a wonderful habitat the local pair are occupying. The conversations wirh staff were wonderful, and we went back for takeaway coffees as the first ones were so good!
Very pleasant experience visiting the Mallee Fowl centre, the enclosures and bird hide are well set out, the information available inside and displays are very interesting and the cafe service exceptional and great coffee all other customers seemed very happy as a good sign to enjoy lunch or cake too.
