Surprisingly good zoo for a small Caribbean island. The price is high (€17.50/pp), but it is larger than it looks from the road. Don't expect any large mammals, but they do have two large cats (a black jaguar--I've never seen one before ever--and a puma/cougar) and a variety of monkeys. The grounds are interesting as well, since it is the ruins of a former sugar mill and rum distillery. Some beautiful flowers on the grounds as well. Takes about an hour and a half to two hours to walk through. You can walk here from St. Pierre, but there are some spots where there is little room to walk along the highway. Take the second road in from the beach (not the first one as suggested by Google Maps) for a better/wider sidewalk. Click Helpful below if this review has been of help to you.
Very beautiful zoo. Lots of animals - jaguars, flamingos, crocodiles, parrots etc. However, the cages are way too small for this amount of animals. Not much freedom for them. Otherwise I enjoyed my visit . However, you can buy a ticket for Jardin de Balata and the Zoo just for 2eur difference. This was not mentioned!
Amazing! It is quite large. Almost 1 hr to complete. The map is very handy. follow it! Staff is friendly. Ask for the ticket that allows you to visit both jardin de balata and the zoo.
Wonderful spot to enjoy the exotic atmosphere of the island and to spend time with the kids.
Great little zoo in the ruins of an old rum distillery. Entrance fee is 17,5 euros. They have signs in French and English. Cool little exhibit on pirates at the end as well.
A great place to take the kids when visiting Martinique ! The zoo is well maintained…
The zoo is an excellent attraction for families in the area. The grounds, wow, the park is located in a tight Valley and they worked there enclosures within the ruins of Saint Pierre. There is a wide variety of animals, but become they a more free to roam in larger enclosures they can be difficult to see sometimes. But honestly the most impressive thing is the landscaping. Incredible. Worth to the visit!
What a great zoo, was surprised by the amount of different animals actually on show , it's set in beautiful landscape , it reminds me of Jurassic park and you half expected a t rex to come bursting through the rainforest , it was a organised trip while on a cruise , just wish I could have stayed longer

One of the best beaches in the Caribbean, with its grey volcanic sand and great views. Parking can be very difficult, get there early if you can, it’s worth it
Not very good snorkeling - we saw no fish. Had to leave due to strong wind pelting us with sand. Pretty place, nice beach though.
very beautiful black sand beach. Don't miss the walk in the forest towards the waterfall.
Great snorkling if you head to the north past the end of the beach. Lovely coral, diverse fish and underwater plants. Parking is tough, but worth it.
Nice place to relax. Could be challenging to find the place for car parking.
A beautiful black sand beach with a 5-10 minute walk through the trees to get there. There’s also a waterfall hike and another wooded hike. The snorkeling was only okay when we were there, but the water was clear. I saw a few interesting schools of fish. It is secluded, but after 12:00 or 13:00 more people arrived.
Very beautiful beach. A short walk through the jungle. Black sand
Little paradise beach. Short walk from the parking through the jungle. Nice waves and not too many people.

Depaz Distillery, located at the foot of Montagne Pelée and overlooking the bay of Saint-Pierre. What a beautiful distillery, a great steam museum and a wonderful restored castle. Great experience
Very nice habitation with a majestic view dominating the ocean. The visit isn't too long, but definitely enjoyable. The tasting is sadly limited to a single consumption (the Port cask is excellent!). Prices are quite cheaper than what you can find in regular supermarkets, so make sure you buy what you need directly at the habitation! Enjoy the visit
We had a delightful few hours exploring the grounds of Depaz Distillery when our cruise ship docked in Martinique. The Manor house is lovely, the factory is interesting, the rum tasting is yummy and the gifts shop is wonderful. A very enjoyable stop!
It sure is easy to get carried away by the beauty of the estate. You can do a free tour of the distillery. If you want to enter the villa, however, you have to pay a small entrance fee. (Attention: They sold tickets for 5€ and 7€ depending if you want one or two tastings in the end. We chose option 1 and still got to taste more rums. Others did not visit the villa and still got a free tasting.)
Very nice place. The road uphill to the distillery is very nice. The distillery and the site are Truly worth the visit. We had the opportunity to try their rum at the shop. The staff is not very friendly, we found them rather rude. The offer the rum trial as if they don’t want clients to buy the rum. One of the positive points is the property’s guidance. You connect to their wifi and have automatically the guide. It is nice to be able to do a self guide of the property in the mobile phone and for free. Only visiting the mansion is chargeable (5 euros). You must buy the ticket at the shop. The property is beautiful, the rums are worth trying, and the restaurant on premise is both delightful and the restaurant’s staff is very friendly, unlike the people at the distillery’s shop.
Depaz has a beautiful property. The castle is definitely a highlight, it is stunning. The whole site is well maintained and visitors have it easy to get around. The only disappointment: While most distilleries let you try several different rums, they just give you one single tiny sip to taste. That makes is kind of difficult to decide if it's worth buying a bottle.
Absolutely beautiful grounds, well maintained and an incredible view toward the sea. The tour is free to walk a marked path that takes you around the grounds and certain areas of the distillery. There is a paid tour of the Chateau Depaz but it does not run on certain days, best check with the counter. Depaz Rhum is fantastic and I think offer a different flavour when compared to other distilleries that don't have the advantage of volcanic soil to grow the sugar canne. Definitely one of the distilleries on the island you should visit.
Rum is the drink of choice on the islands and this beautiful distillery was a gem. The drive to get there was fascinating, as you drive by Mt. Pelee, which was alternately shrouded in clouds and sun. The grounds were well kept and appealing, and they had a tasting room and were very eager to let you sample their wares. There was also a well set up tour and some great photo opportunities. Best of all, the main house was magnificent.

Amazing Experience at Mount Pelée! as a solo female hiker. PS I am not a professional hiker. I absolutely loved my hike up Mount Pelée. The trail is listed on Google as a 1.5-hour route, but in reality, it took me around 5 hours to complete. I tackled Refuge 2, and 3, including the Boucle de la Calderia. Initially, I planned to go only as far as Refuge 2 and turn back, but after reaching it, I still had plenty of energy (though I hadn't considered that I'd need to descend as well bahaha). The route from Refuge 2 through the Calderia to Refuge 3 took about an hour. The path, highlighted in cream or yellow in the photo, is a mix of flat terrain and rock climbing. There are some steep climbs, and the terrain is very rugged, with ups and downs before you reach a point near Refuge 3. From there the is a part that heads to refuge 2 which is a climb as well. But once this is done. it's all downhill back to Refuge 1 (where the parking lot is). I started around 11 AM and completed the hike by 4 PM. By the time I reached Refuge 2, I noticed that most other hikers were already heading down. I felt a bit nervous walking alone, especially as I hiked through the Calderia, surrounded by clouds with no one else in sight. The most challenging part was the rock climbing. Some of the rocks were larger than me, and while the ascent was challenging, the descent was tricky and slippery, especially since the path was wet and muddy (fortunately, it didn’t rain that day). I didn’t take many breaks, as I was worried about getting stuck at the top after dark! I decided not to attempt the final stretch to Le Chinois because I was hiking alone and wanted to make sure I descended before it got dark. For this hike, I recommend wearing a good pair of shoes (preferably hiking boots), long pants (I wore shorts, which wasn't ideal), bringing some snacks, and plenty of water. It’s a beautiful but demanding hike—be prepared for a full day of adventure! Would not advice to go during rainy day. Good luck
pro tips: - some parts of the trail can be wet and the climbing stair surfaces waterlogged, so wear waterproof hiking shoes. This is not a short hike to be done on sneakers - this is cloud height so it can get wet, bring protection from water. An umbrella works - There are very good grocery stores in the village close to the trailhead, get snacks and water. 2 L per person The views from the top are well worth it. And the lush flora on either side is beautiful.
Take plenty of water and do all the trails. You won't regret it. We were hiking for 9 hours.
What an amazing thing to accomplish! Rain or shine. It’s a tough hike, and if you fear heights, be brave..lol 🇨🇦 The best views ⛰️
Nice hike, a bit difficult. Sore muscles afterwards - we didn’t see much at the very top due to clouds, but the journey was nice. I liked the Boucle part the most.
Go early. Free to hike you do not need a guide the path is well marked.bfree to park parking fills us fast then people park along road. Check weather before hike if you want a clear view once at top. DNT touch any insects you may find bc they are poisonous. Bring water and food.
No Experience; but 1902 Eruption was a Vesuvius-style Pyroclastic Cloud "Avalanche"; Damaged and Destroyed Ships in The Harbor, and destroyed The Town of St. Pierre. Death Toll was estimated at 30,000. Pyroclastic Cloud killed everyone on the land; with two exceptions: A man, locked up, deep, in the City Jail, and a woman, who miraculously survived; everything combustible was set on fire, and people aboard ships in the Harbor said, outside of sounds of burning fires, and Rum Casks, exploding: there was no sounds, on shore. On the Freighter "Roraima", one sailor saw the cloud "leaping down the Mountain", and covering the Town, and ran for the Engine Room. Moments later, The Cloud hit the Freighter, and almost "turned it, over"; all smokestacks on the Freighter, were cut off; as "cleanly, as if they had been"cut with a knife'".
The 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée was a volcanic eruption on the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles Volcanic Arc of the eastern Caribbean, which was one of the deadliest eruptions in recorded history. Eruptive activity began on 23 April as a series of phreatic eruptions from the summit of Mount Pelée. Within days, the vigor of these eruptions exceeded anything witnessed since the island was settled by Europeans. The intensity then subsided for a few days until early May, when the phreatic eruptions increased again. Lightning laced the eruption clouds and trade winds dumped ash on villages to the west. Heavy ash fell, sometimes causing total darkness. Some of the afflicted residents panicked and headed for the perceived safety of larger settlements, especially Saint-Pierre, about 10 km (6.2 mi) south of Pelée's summit. Saint-Pierre received its first ash fall on 3 May.[3] 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée

It is a priceless heritage, which cannot be found in any book: his stories are the sum of the experiences and stories he has known in an entire life dedicated to the city, its places and its characters. All this told with great passion. Beautiful! However, you must know a little French, or be traveling with someone who can translate the story for you a little. Bring water shoes! Pretty little waterfall
Not a breathtakingly large waterfall, but a really nice place to linger. Because of the river that comes after the waterfall, there is a great water playground for children, which is almost exclusively in the shade. There are only a few steps from the car park, so it is suitable for children of all ages :)
Absolutely amazing place to visit. Nestled in the mountains, the scenery in and around the falls are breathtaking. I applaud the person that took the initiative to make this fall accessible.
Pretty, small waterfall. Easily accessible even by children. Well worth the stop
Fun little stop to see some interesting waterfalls and enjoy the rainforest.
2 minutes walk to the waterfall. Beautiful place. Great place for kids to play in the stream or in the pool near the waterfall. Must stop on the way.
Very nice (if somewhat small) waterfall in a lush setting that is easily accessible along a mountain road to Saint-Pierre. Worth the stop for sure!
Really cool and off the beaten path. If you have time bring some food and drinks. If you can make the hike up to the upper falls it is worth it but treacherous

Good dive shop! Did a couple of dives with them in May and liked it. Only difficult if you don't speak French, but that's quite often the case in Martinique.

Writing in English for everyone to understand: Went a few days ago and had a really great time. The captain found dolphins relatively quickly, and we even got to see several types of dolphins. He's also very respectful and knows when to observe them and when to leave them alone. We had found several groups so at some point he even was looking for sperm whales and other big animals a big further off the coast. The little "apéritif" was also very well made and good. The "planteur" (juice mixes and rum) was delicious and very local. We made a stop in a protected area by Le Carbet in which the bay was filled with healthy corals and beautiful fish making for a great snorkeling break. All in all we had a great morning with amazing views. I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

A definite stop in Saint-Pierre. It's a small place, but the museum is arranged into a before, during, and after the eruption of 1902 that wiped out the town. Lots of artifacts. The audio device in English helped a lot.
Stumbled across this wonderful little museum on a rainy day in St. Pierre. So glad we stopped in and checked out the artifacts recovered from the volcanic eruption.
Easy to follow and everything is in French and English. The museum tells the story of the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee, which destroyed the town and killed 30 thousand people within 3 minutes.
A good museum that tells the story of 1902. Some interesting artifacts, which are well presented. There is an audioguide, or you can download the app - it does English. So the story of the town is told well, but if you want to find out more about the volcano itself then drive up to Le Morne Rouge and visit La Maison des Volcans. https://maps.app.goo.gl/n94YnD9Th8HGFkez5
Very informative museum about a terrible explosion by the nearby volcano. We visited on a Sunday morning during an excursion from a Celebrity cruise ship. We were the first and only ones there at the time. It is small and can get crowded.
We enjoyed the museum which was detailed and bilingual. The Town itself has few amenities. Parking was tricky. Pack a lunch. Worth the trip to see the well preserved ruins from the 1902 volcano.
While you're in Martinique, stop by at this museum. Interesting short history about the eruption of Pelée Volcano in 1902. The view from the museum is beautiful. Located in Sainte Pierre. The place is clean, parking is available, toilet is super clean.
Absolutely incredible and heart moving experience. The exhibits were well thought out. We spent a little over an hour there, I recommend it for anyone.

We left the Café Carbet house and reached Fonds Saint Denis, approximately 4km one way. Our little NAYA was with us 😃Be careful where you walk, I don't recommend it with young children because in places the low wall is narrow and you have to walk on the edge of the void. On one side of the road there is the coffee house and on the other there is access to the slave canal, hence the name of the said municipal road. The canal is allegedly closed for work but the very beginning of work is invisible, thus justifying the abandonment of the historic site. Fortunately, the local residents claim to maintain the place themselves because the canal is useful to them for agriculture... So many tourists flock to this breathtaking site. Mainly focused on Mount Peele eruption of 1902. It has a film with English subtitles that is quite interesting. With my limited French, I relied on a translator app to explore the rest of the exhibition.
We thought this museum was great and really good value. They have some interesting and relevant displays well laid out (in French but they still show the geological concepts clearly). The film was excellent. My daughters age 7 and 9 watched it all despite having to read the subtitles and it covers not just Mont Pelee but volcanoes in the Caribbean in general. There was also a special exhibition with many interactive maths and geometric puzzles to try out in a large cool room! We were staying in St Pierre anyway so it was an easy trip - and I’m not sure I’d have travelled down the island just to get there but anyway St Pierre is a good day out in itself with ruins of the volcano around the town including the old church in Rue d’Eglise and a lovely cafe.
Card machine doesn’t work so if you don’t have euros in cash they won’t let you in
I am very disappointed. We arrived at 1330 (3:30pm) and we were turned away even though the sign says otherwise. The agent would not allow a group of 10 people to enter even though we walked a half hour from st pierre to have a tour and though they do not close until 5pm! Very disappointed. Bad customer service.
Could have been very interesting and educational, however, our personal experience wasn’t that great. Our first attempt to visit failed, even though the sign on the window clearly stated the opening hours and it should’ve been open. The following day, our credit card was supposedly declined. We tried a different card and apparently, it was declined again. I then realised that the first payment had gone through and refused to try more cards or pay cash. We had to argue with the lady at the entrance for some time before she reluctantly let us in (no tickets issued). Shortly later, I checked the other bank account and realised that both payments had gone through! When we spoke to a member of staff (via Google translate as nobody there speaks English), they advised that payments are managed by the head office and there’s nothing they can do! Sadly, despite paying double the price, we could only benefit from the film upstairs, which we knew to request English subtitles to. The main exhibition is mainly in French and there are no English audio guides. There is an online one for a part of the exhibition, but you need a phone with data and headphones. We had only one phone with limited data between us and no headphones, so couldn’t use it. What a shame.
As several other reviewers have pointed out - this place is more closed than open. I tried to visit on Jan 18 (Wednesday) at 2pm. There were few other French tourist, incl. a family with a kid. We all “bounced” - despite helpful attempts by the security guards to reach someone in charge and allow us to enter. What a joke.
So interesting and great views!
I arrived at 3:30, the sign said open till 5 with last entry at 4, but they refused to let me in. Given how hard it is to get here, i think this policy of disappointing tourists is unwise. I advise readers to skip this place

Great location on the beach, comfortable loungers, and plenty of animals around, which was amazing. Beautiful view of the sunset. The service was slow, not very friendly, and didn’t speak English, but it’s still worth it.
One of the few places on the island I had the chance to have real coffee. I enjoyed that one a lot. Also a super friendly waitress that helped me out with a cigarette. Merci beaucoup for that! Sitting at the beach comes with a great vibe. Although sometimes some chicken might run around the table. Definitely worth a visit.
Good ambience but food not very good, overpriced prawns and fries from frozen packets. Great views and seating
Really nice atmosphere on a Saturday night, concert by a local band. Really nice music, nice food. Right ok the beach. Recommend
Best place to enjoy a perfect Martinique sunset over some cold drinks at the beach! Service was exceptional! Our waitress was very friendly. Drinks arrived quickly at our tables. For food we only tried the fried sweet potato appetizer. It was delicious!
Lovely place for food and drink while watching the sunset.
Great virgin mojito and despojito! Food was great- whole tuna and salad for me/ prawns and shrimp with fries and salad for my husband- right on the beach. We ate around 2 pm after a hike and still serving food. Parking right there. Has clean bathrooms and a volley ball court next door. Enjoyed our delicious meal!
One of my favorite places in Martinique mostly to get drinks in the afternoon or at sunset. Reggae music played all day long gives it a very Caribbean irie style vibes and the beach is just gorgeous. They have beds in front of the ocean, little living rooms on the sand (call ahead to reserve a spot), or tables on the deck by the bar which are protected from possible rain. A must do if you're in the North on the Caribbean side!

This isn't actually the correct location of the prison cell as seen on maps so don't get confused. (Hence the 4 star review) The cell isn't located by the building but through the ruins and by the right far end. The cell was originally built as a powder deposit. Hence the thick walls and lack of windows. The history of this small landmark is extraordinary. You may only see a small cell but what happened here is an incredible story. I recommend you take the time to read about St. Pierre, the volcano and the prisoner before you visit so you can appreciate the details. Otherwise you will just see ruins and a small cell made of stone. I for one found this to be an incredible experience. There are no tourist masses, no queues and no entrance fees. You are free to roam and take in history. The place was excavated and then left almost untouched for 100 years. Nowadays it is almost impossible to experience any place of interest in such an authentic way so don't disregard a visit, should you find yourself in St. Pierre.

The old prison, and in particular the famous Cyparis dungeon, a rare survivor of the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902, bears poignant witness to the tragedy that struck the town. (Translated by Google) Please note this is not where it is indicated on google. We parked on the D1 in front of the hike sign. There are 2 hard-to-find parking spaces and if not, 1km further down you have a large parking lot with a kiosk. The hike is unpleasant in rainy weather because it is all mud and slippery! It's only the descent to the river that is magical. You have to walk along the river a bit to get to a superb swimming pool. We then turned around because there was no car on the other side of the path. The trip is noted as 2.1km from the D1 and 2.6km on the other side of the road (D2 I believe).
The trek does not start here. Be careful, both beginning and ending are way more up north.
