Tiananmen Square is a historic and expansive city square in Beijing, China. It is a cultural center and holds great political significance in the country's history. The square has witnessed many important events and serves as a prominent location for political gatherings and national celebrations.
The square itself is huge and impressive, perfectly clean and well-guarded. The sight of the Tiananmen Gate with Chairman Mao’s portrait overlooking the square is iconic — it’s something you’ve seen in photos, but seeing it in real life feels powerful. Early in the morning, the flag-raising ceremony is especially moving and shows the pride of the Chinese nation. However, the atmosphere can feel a bit strict and heavily secured, with checkpoints and guards everywhere, which reminds you how politically important the place is. Despite that, it’s very well-organized and safe for tourists. Visiting Tiananmen Square gives you a real sense of China’s modern history, patriotism, and discipline. It’s not a place full of entertainment or shops, but a place to observe, reflect, and understand the country’s journey.
Madan A — Google review
More a drive by experience as the area was closed due to the massive military parade preparations for 80 years victory (over japan) celebrations. Security was very very serious for all. Traffic was rerouted on lots of nights for practice parades. A demonstration of military might for the west to take note of no doubt. Be sure to watch on tv early Sept. Even the locals can't go in person.
Anil H — Google review
Visited on the Oct 1st holiday — the square was very crowded but absolutely impressive. Its massive size, vibrant decorations and colorful flower displays made the visit unforgettable. A must-see landmark in Beijing!
Darwin P — Google review
Huge square in the center of Beijing. It is facing the entrance door (Meridian Gate) of the Forbidden City / Imperial Palace. This place has become internationally famous due to the protests of thousands of students asking for reforms in 1989. The image of a student defying a column of tanks remains in the history. Thousands of people were killed by the regime but not on the square. Nowadays, it is a very controlled area and you will have to queue and show your passport several times to get in.
Oliver K — Google review
Visiting Tiananmen Square is an absolute must for anyone traveling to Beijing. The sheer scale and magnitude of the square are breathtaking and truly overwhelming in person. It serves as the historic and political heart of China, making the experience deeply impactful. The square is impeccably maintained, and the surrounding structures—like the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, and the National Museum—are monumental, highlighting the country's rich history. Be sure to arrive early, as security checks can take time! The large crowds are amazing. and for the best experience, visit around sunrise or sunset to witness the flag-raising or flag-lowering ceremony. Allow plenty of time to walk the entire perimeter and appreciate the solemnity and grandeur of the location.
David L — Google review
Tiananmen Square is a place of great historical and cultural significance. The vast, clean, and well-maintained space creates a solemn and impressive atmosphere. Guides and security staff are friendly and helpful, ensuring a smooth visit. The layout is organized, making it easy to explore different areas. Watching the morning flag-raising ceremony is especially moving and unforgettable. This is a must-visit destination in Beijing to gain deeper insight into China’s history and national pride. A bit crowded, with long queues for several hours.
Hiến Q — Google review
Tiananmen Square is one of the most iconic landmarks in Beijing and truly a must-see. The sheer size of the square is impressive — it’s one of the largest public squares in the world, and standing in the middle gives you a sense of both history and scale that’s hard to put into words.
Emmgee — Google review
Huge. Free to enter but the entrance is heavily guarded. There’s security checks at the underground passes, hundreds of cameras, bag check, passport check and reservation time slot check. Finally when you walk around 500m to get to the entrance, it is another 500m+ to get to the main areas so plan ahead if you want to visit the museum/mausoleum.

The National Museum of China is a colossal museum that spans 2.2 million square feet and houses over 1 million relics, offering an extensive collection that showcases the rich cultural heritage and history of China. Situated on the eastern edge of Tiananmen Square, this renowned attraction provides a comprehensive overview of Chinese history through its diverse array of ancient artifacts, traditional art forms, and archaeological treasures from various dynasties and periods.
The National Museum of China is an absolute MUST for any Beijing itinerary. Be aware: **you MUST book tickets online in advance** (book as early as possible!). To truly appreciate the sheer scale and priceless treasures inside, **arrive as early as possible when it opens**. You'll avoid the massive crowds and have a much more peaceful, enjoyable experience exploring China's most significant cultural relics, spanning thousands of years. Highly recommended for visitors from all over the world!

Before planing my visit, a friend warned me this spot is popular with tourists, so I came with my low expectation… and honestly, it still felt overwhelming. The moment I got off the train, it was chaos—long queues, security checks (three times, from train to the entrance), and some seriously impatient staff. Not the chill experience I hoped for. 🤯 If you’re planning to come, pack your patience and maybe a podcast for the wait. 🤞🏻Good luck!
Peggy L — Google review
A pretty big museum show casing much of Chinese ancient and recent history. However I felt that it was a little lackluster in terms of interesting things. Good news is once you exit here you can check out the tiananmen plaza so you don’t need to come a second time to visit the plaza.
Allen L — Google review
Extremely large museum with huge complex and ridiculously large collection of artifacts you’ll never finish in one day. Other than the permanent exhibitions, there’s also some paid exhibitions such as the Respin Russian art exhibition. The basement one history of china permanent exhibition is the highlight. If you can, just visit this exhibition. Complex is huge, be prepared to walk a lot, children might not enjoy it, so I think kids above 12 years old is better. Bring some snacks as it’s very crowded and tiring. Everyone just rests at the steps and have some snacks. Exhibits are great but the toilets are not. So minus stars for the insufficiency of toilets plus strong urine smell in every toilet. That’s unacceptable for such a large government institution. Possibly toilets only make up for 1% of the building size. Very strange ratio since toilets are a basic human need. It’s also close to Tiananmen Square, you can enjoy museum until closing time then head across the road to Tiananmen square for the flag descending ceremony. But there’s always so many people, so you might see more heads and phones than anything.
M — Google review
Huge and wide-ranging museum, front ancient history to modern technologies and even some CCP artifacts. Book tickets on the website or WeChat 7 days before at 8pm Beijing time exactly. Tickets book out in minutes. Enter at the north side of the museum, DO NOT enter Tiananmen square security as it's a separate entrance. You'll exit the museum directly into Tiananmen square, so see that (or the forbidden City) after your museum visit. There's a few vending machines and cafes inside, the one in the basement is the cheapest. There's also filtered water dispensers for bottles only. I spent 6 hours here, could have spent much more!
Josiah W — Google review
To visit any government museums and other points of interest, you need to download WeChat and most of the institutions have something called mini programs in WeChat where you can check the activities and buy ticket We got lucky and came to know tickets are available 7 days in advance around 5 PM every day so be ready to book It is opposite the Tiananmen Square and be prepared to stand in line for the visit as they check tickets and for foreigners visitors you need to carry a passport Musuem has good layout and to understand the rich history of China be prepared to spend 2 to 3 hours in Musuem Lot of Buddhist artifacts are placed in top floor and calligraphy details are showcased to describe how it’s important to Chinese culture It can get busy so plan ahead and the Musuem is well maintained In most places I did find English translation or use Audio guide along with phone translator

National Museum of China (中国国家博物馆) A China SIM card is required to book a visiting slot. On-site booking is not available. Advance reservations can be made 1–7 days in advance & admission is free. Online booking opens daily from 5:00 PM. The museum is closed on Mondays. Bring passport for ID verification when collecting tickets.
L C — Google review
You'll need to reserve tickets via their official website or via trip.com. foc. Tickets open 7 days before the day of visit. At around 5pm. There are security checks so add about 15mins for that. Head to B1 for the history of china. The exit is in the middle of level 1.

The Temple of Heaven is a renowned temple complex dating back to 1420, known for its distinctive circular buildings set in a popular park. It's located in the Dongcheng district of Beijing, which is an ideal area for accommodations due to its proximity to historical sites like the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The district also offers attractions such as Jingshan Park for nature lovers and the Wangfujing pedestrian mall for shopping enthusiasts.
A peaceful escape in the heart of Beijing — Temple of Heaven is simply amazing! I visited the Temple of Heaven during a day trip from Beijing as part of my China journey, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my trip. From the moment I entered, I was struck by the calm, expansive grounds. Unlike the busier tourist spots like the Forbidden City, this place had a more relaxed, spiritual atmosphere. The wide open spaces, the well-maintained gardens, and the ancient pine trees made walking around truly peaceful. The main structures especially the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests were absolutely stunning. The colors and symmetry of the architecture are breathtaking, and it's hard to believe it was constructed without nails! I also really enjoyed the Circular Mound Altar and Imperial Vault of Heaven, both of which showcase the intricate planning behind Ming dynasty architecture and cosmology. It’s not just the buildings though what made the experience even more special was the local life unfolding around the park. I saw elderly locals playing cards, practicing Tai Chi, and singing in small groups. It felt like stepping into a living, breathing slice of Beijing culture.
Rahul P — Google review
It is a good place to spend lazy afternoons or early evenings. nicely maintained and extremely clean. If you are foreigner then reach a bit early to get through the entry formalities and do expect to walk a lot. you would love the central pagoda where surrounding it is the urban Beijing but in the middle there is old traditional monument and greenery. A must visit.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Temple of Heaven – Beijing The Temple of Heaven is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I’ve visited in Beijing. The architecture is truly iconic — full of history, colors, and traditional Chinese design. The surrounding park area is very clean and well-maintained, perfect for walking, relaxing, or watching locals practice Tai Chi and music. It’s a great place to learn about ancient Chinese culture and religion. The atmosphere feels calm and spiritual, especially early in the morning. The ticket price is reasonable, and the whole area is huge — you can easily spend a few hours exploring. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Beijing!
Md. H — Google review
A truly magnificent and peaceful place full of history and symbolism. The architecture is breathtaking — the blue circular roofs and the layout of the park create a sense of harmony and balance. Walking through the vast green areas, you can feel the authentic atmosphere. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the highlight — stunning both outside and inside. It’s best to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the calmness of the park. Definitely one of the must-see landmarks in Beijing.
Igor O — Google review
The Temple of Heaven symbolizes so much history and events. I recommend a guide to visit it so that I can explain all the history and symbolism of it and getting up early to avoid encountering too many people. There's a beautiful park surrounding it, so you can take a walk. It's the symbol of Beijing.
Edoardo C — Google review
Temple of Heaven is one of those places everyone tells you to visit in Beijing—and I can see why. Among all the grand sites in the city, this one has a special charm. The circular design, detailed walls, and beautifully layered rooftops are simply stunning. What I also loved was how the walkways and entrances are mostly sheltered, making it a pleasant visit even on a hot day. If you only have time for one historical site in Beijing, make it this one.
Ferdi — Google review
One of the go to places for historical landmarks in Beijing. Temple has a great history and it is huge monument containing several huge parks and flowers gardens as well as very serene resting spots. Normally one would require a good half day to enjoy the full scale historical descriptions and buildings and parks.
Sajid K — Google review
The Temple of Heaven in Beijing is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of imperial Chinese architecture, where Ming and Qing dynasty emperors performed rituals to pray for good harvests. The architecture is very symbolic, with a round heaven and a square earth, with huge wooden pillars. The entire complex is very beautiful, should visit with a guide. The place is usually very crowded, but a must visit place in Beijing.

The Summer Palace, located in the western suburb of Beijing, is a magnificent royal garden featuring stunning temples and artworks set amidst beautifully landscaped grounds.
It’s massive — you could easily spend a whole day exploring. Bring sunscreen, umbrella, snacks, water, and comfy sneakers. Plenty of scenic views around every corner and lots to see and walk through. Large groups seen here too
Eduardo V — Google review
Probably the busiest place in summer with locals just relaxing. Nice lake sail after walking the amazing long corridor full of art work. Interesting stories about the unlucky rock. Also one of the few places to see museum pieces on site that were not looted by English and French. Stuff luckily found in the lake
Anil H — Google review
The Summer Palace is huge — about 2.9 sq km in size! If you’re short on time, start from the East Palace Gate & walk through Leshou Hall to see the famous Qingzhixiu stone, then head up toward the Tower of Buddhist Incense for the best lake view. After that, stroll along the Long Corridor beside Kunming Lake & exit at the North Ruyi Gate. Whole walk takes around 1.5 hours, enough to feel the beauty of this imperial garden.
L C — Google review
The Summer Palace is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places to visit in Beijing. The combination of traditional Chinese architecture, peaceful lakes, and lush gardens makes it perfect for a long walk or boat ride. I especially enjoyed the view from the Longevity Hill — it gives you a stunning panorama of Kunming Lake and the entire complex.
Igor O — Google review
This is one of the main attractions of Beijing. The emperor's summer residence is set in an immense park where you can spend half a day just visiting part of it. Everything is very well kept and beautiful.
Edoardo C — Google review
Summer Palace is enormous! There is simply no way you can see it all in one day so my advice is, do a little research, find out what you want to see there and stick to the plan. Sure there is one "must" the central pagoda of the "Buddhist Incense" but other than that the place is just so large, you simply won't be able to walk it all, so pick your poison or come back for day two
Bobby C — Google review
Alot of history goes into this UNESCO site. Learn about the history of the past and enjoy the architecture and soak in the atmosphere. Would need at least half a day to walk through the summer palace.
C L — Google review
It depends which entrance you use, but I’d really recommend checking the side with the Marble Boat—it’s one of the highlights here. From there you can hop on a boat across the lake (about 40 yuan), which is very scenic and gives you a great view of the palace grounds. The little souvenir shop opposite the Marble Boat also has surprisingly good quality items. I was here about 15 years ago and it definitely has improved since then—more organized, easier to get around, and still just as beautiful. Overall, I had a really positive experience. The Summer Palace is beautiful and easy to get to from central Beijing—subway plus a short bus ride. I got my ticket right at the entrance and the line was short that day. The scenery is gorgeous all around and it’s a place where you can easily spend a few hours just exploring and enjoying the views.

Panjiayuan Antique Market Parking Lot is a must-visit spot in Beijing, located near the Panjiayuan metro station. This sprawling market is a treasure trove of antiques and replicas, with vendors selling everything from Mao's Little Red Book to retro cigarette advertisements and Chinese handicrafts. While most items are replicas, diligent shoppers can uncover authentic treasures if they're willing to dig through the stalls.
This is the beast flea market I have ever been to. It has numerous antiques, stone carvings, Caligraphy, beads, metals, books, .., you name it and they sell it but one must bargain heavily. Highly recommend. No tickets required. Starts closing 8 pm onwards.

Beautiful place. I visited quickly because I arrived almost closing but I bought many things. Rare rocks, a tiny sculpture of medieval knight, bracelet like murano’s crystal. All really beautiful!

Good location for souvenirs, (Chinese Wen Wan Walnut) - hand playing walnuts, Jade bracelet; necklace; rings etc. Semi- clean toilet; squatting toilets Vendors are willing to bargain as well

This place comes to life in the evening. Many people come here to look at antique goods, traditional Chinese craft, and food.
Biyan T — Google review
this is a must visit for me whenever I visit Beijing ... I enjoy the traditional feel of the market and the soveniers ... if you feel shy in bargain, don't come here tip to bargain: start from 10% of what they ask for ... if you are smart, you can close it about 20-30% of what they initially ask. Be ready to walk away but walk slow. They ll mostly call u back. Be ruthless in bargaining but be polite and humble ... they are good people ... some stuff is just amazing

This is the only place in Beijing to buy a unique gift. I paid a artist 350Y to carve my face on a stone stamp. Real art. Not digital. I texted him the photo, and it was done a hour later. He is near the old books. Best gift in china.
Phil H — Google review
Worth going to if you fancy a street market. However, you need to bargain, and hard, so don’t be alarmed. Items all quite similar for the weekend market stalls. Permanent shops open all well. Get there for around 4pm as it starts to shut at 5, closing at 6pm

The Forbidden City, a palace complex completed in 1420 with 980 buildings, is now a museum showcasing art and artifacts. It spans 72 hectares and attracts crowds of tourists eager to capture its grandeur. The site has gradually opened more areas to the public, making it more accessible than ever. Visitors are encouraged to grab guidebooks like 'Candogan Beijing' and 'Insight Guide to Beijing' for an enriched experience.
The Forbidden City is the imperial palace complex in the center of the Imperial City in Beijing. It’s huge, wear a comfortable shoe. Try to get there early in the morning and carry your passport for security checks. Most of the times thousands of visitors are on queue. So may take some time to enter. Toilets are after the west gate and are mostly wc. It is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.
Indika G — Google review
The Forbidden City is a must in Beijing as well as in China. It refers primarily to the history of the country and remains the most important Palace. Its construction was initiated by the Emperor Jongle during the Ming dynasty and was realized between 1406 until 1420. Some remarks to make. As a visitor, you will have the possibility of seing the different buildings from the outside. As compared to some palaces in other part of the world, it is a bit short. You will go from gates to gates and present your passport several times. Moreover, there are around 80'000 persons visiting the site every day, so forget about the mystery that you can feel in the movie " The Last Emperor". Nevertheless, the Forbidden Palace remains a unique monument in the history of humanity. NB The name forbidden city comes from the fact that the Palace complex was reserved to a restricted number of persons - the Emperor, the Royal Family and some officials. Transgression of this rule could be punished by death.
Oliver K — Google review
The Forbidden City in Beijing, China is one of the most fascinating and historically rich places I have ever seen. It was once the royal palace where Chinese emperors lived and ruled for nearly 500 years, and today it stands as a grand reminder of China’s imperial past. The place is huge and majestic, with thousands of rooms, large courtyards, and traditional red-and-gold buildings that reflect perfect Chinese architecture and symmetry. Walking through its wide stone paths feels like stepping back in time — every wall, gate, and roof seems to carry a story from centuries ago.
Madan A — Google review
We’ve all seen photos of this place countless times online, but nothing truly prepares you for the feeling of standing before these majestic, centuries-old walls. The scale, the details, and the atmosphere—it all hits differently when you’re there in person. We had planned to enter through Tiananmen Gate and reached just around the official opening hour. The queue was already a sea of people, nearly shoulder to shoulder, with little regard for personal space. The closer we got to the security checkpoint, the more chaotic it became—a mix of shoving and pushing. To make things trickier, the shorter lane near the gate was apparently only for visitors without bags. We only found out when reaching the security checkpoint, aftrr 45 minutes in that line, as there were no visible signs indicating the rule. By the time we were redirected to the other lane, we realized it would take at least another hour just to pass the checkpoint. That’s when we decided to change plans. Instead of entering through Tiananmen, we walked toward the Palace’s side entrance on the right—about a 30-minute walk, and easily the best decision of the day. The crowd was still there, but far more manageable—we could move at our own pace through a hutong and into lush greenery inside the compound. Way better than standing shoulder to shoulder for another hour just to get in. Stepping into the Palace Museum was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Vast open courtyards stretched in every direction, surrounded by grand, intricately detailed halls that seemed to whisper stories from another era. It’s one of those moments where you just stop, look around, and quietly take it all in. Reserve your tickets at least a week in advance via WeChat or the official website. Once you get your QR code, just keep it on your phone—no need to print it.

While visiting Beijing, we booked a tour of the forbidden City for a Saturday morning. We were lucky that the weather was really nice and the group was pretty small, of around 30 people. The thing we were the luckiest about, though, was our guide, Maggie, who was a very good and experiences professional, fluent in English, with a clear pronunciation, and relentless in helping every member of the group with their individual needs. We were not aware that the tour only covers outdoor spaces of the forbidden City, which is huge in area. No indoor spaces were visited. Being a saturday, as expected, the place was crowded, mainly with Nationals that looked like they were visiting the place for the first time, sometimes in groups of around 100 people, many of whom were elderly and had some locomotion problems. The area is so large that even with the thousands of people around us I managed to make some photographs of some of the spaces with barely anyone in the picture. This place gives you an educative insight into what the past history of China and the roots of their culture are all about. It was a great experience. The lower points of the visit were: 1 - The security screening, made by machines, which was chaotic, with people screaming and pushing each other. I even dropped a case with one of my lens, without noticing, but some other visitor saw it happen and returned it to me, pronto. 2 - Especially if you take into consideration the size of the whole city, we found it strange that there was only one set of bathrooms available, and they were located at the far end of the visitedd area. Since my girlfriend needed to use the restroom only a few minutes after we passed the security screening and were walking towards the first pavilion, and with the careful help of Maggie we had to walk past the three main buildings close to where the tour would end use the bathroom, and return to the group. This took between 12 and 15 minutes using Maggie's wise advices and explanation on how to get there and back. We didn't feel like we lost an important part of the tour. It would be interesting, and helpful, if visitors could have access to a bilingual map of the whole visited area - for this kind of situation - that could be made accessible through a QR code read by our phones. At the end of the visit, Maggie was again very professional and helpful, by showing us out of the visited space and giving us information on how and where to go to grab a taxi. I made several hundreds of pictures with my camera and phone and finally enough, some of my favorite are the ones I took of the outside of the walls of the forbidden City by getting them in the sentinel Tower reflected on the outside moat. All in all the tour was a very positive and enjoyable experience, made possible by the nice weather with some sun but mainly cloudy sky which, and the cold air in beijing, which allowed us to spend so long outdoors without feeling either too warm or too cold. Kudos to Maggie who was one of the best guides I've ever experienced.

The history that this palace holds dates down to many centuries ago. The place is magnificent and best visited in autumn. Take some time to enjoy this place! Foreigners would buy tickets on day of visit but while stocks last.

Would recommend dressing up before going in! It is crowded but you need to find secluded spots away from the main pathways to get some good photos! If you want pictures without people in front of the entrance, go again at 5pm. You can also catch the sunrise for photos. Make sure to read all of the information signs if you do not get an audio guide. We got an audio guide to help us understand more and it was not too expensive.

The Capital Museum in Beijing is a modern institution that showcases ancient Chinese statues, porcelain, paintings, and cultural relics. It offers an immersive experience into the history and culture of the city from its inception to the present day. The museum's various sections cover different aspects of Beijing's rich heritage, including ancient maps, Ming Dynasty artifacts, traditional art and crafts, as well as historical documents and photographs depicting daily life in bygone eras.
Lots of cool exhibits and historical information on the capital. Wish there were more signs in English. Free entry!

The Capital Museum (Chinese: 首都博物馆) in Beijing, China, is a premier art museum. Established in 1981, the museum relocated to its current facility in 2006. This expansive building houses an impressive collection of ancient porcelain, bronze, calligraphy, painting, jade, sculpture, and Buddhist statues from imperial China and other Asian cultures. Initially, the museum's collection comprised 83,000 objects. Although it attracts fewer visitors than other prominent art institutions in Beijing, such as the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City, the National Museum of China, and the National Art Museum of China, it remains a leading cultural institution. Today, its collection boasts over 200,000 cultural relics. Only a small fraction is exhibited, with a significant percentage comprising artifacts unearthed in Beijing. The Capital Museum's striking architecture, led by Jean-Marie Duthilleul and Cui Kai, draws inspiration from ancient Chinese design. The stone exterior symbolizes the city walls and towers of ancient China. A danbi stone, embedded at the north entrance, features intricate carvings of dragons, phoenixes, and imperial artifacts. The reception hall showcases a decorative Ming Dynasty archway, highlighting the ancient architecture. The museum boasts proximity to subway and public transport, with complimentary admission for all. (Take the Line 1 subway from Tiananmen West station to Muxidi station (8 mins ride). A full day can be devoted to exploring the sophisticated art collections and artifacts on display. Regrettably, I was unable to complete my exploration of the museum few years ago due to other commitments; however, I intend to fulfill the tour at a future date.

Very large museum you need to make a booking before going but just register with your passport . Download the QR and you can scan to enter. 4-5 floors of many exhibits. Start with the prehistoric times of Beijing to how it gradually developed through the ages. There’s also recreation of Beijing life and streets on the top floor. I went on a Sunday and there were also volunteers giving walks and talks. Good to listen to their introduction. I think it’s a great museum to bring kids. Not so big like the National China museum so it’s not too tiring and less crowded. Also sufficient lots of exhibits to see.

My first stop for the day is the Beijing Capital Museum. This is one of the best museums you can visit here in Beijing. The place is pretty big and you will find that they is a good number of tourists that come here. There is a long queue at the entrance as everyone is required to go through security checks before entering. Lighters and Tripods and not permitted here, so you will have to dispose of any lighters that you may have, and also deposit your tripod to collect when you are done. Tickets here are free, and all you need to do is present your passport or ID at the ticket booth. There are a total of 4 floors of items and relics that you can look at. Most of the relics that they have here are in very good condition and are displayed very nicely for you to see. They have a section on buddha relics as well which I particularly enjoyed. but generally the whole museum is worth dedicating at least an hour to slowly appreciate.

Nestled in Beijing, the 789 Art District is a thriving center of contemporary art and culture. It pulsates with avant-garde galleries, modern art exhibitions, and diverse creative spaces that attract both local and international artists. The district's former electrical power plant setting adds an industrial charm to the vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can witness artists at work in their studios, purchase unique artworks and souvenirs, unwind at sidewalk cafes, and marvel at numerous outdoor sculptures.
The 798 Art District is a treasure trove of creativity—packed with fascinating exhibitions and street art. Many of the top-tier galleries do charge an entrance fee, but they’re well worth it for the quality and curation. The area also boasts stylish, upscale cafes that are perfect for relaxing or getting some work done in a vibrant, artistic setting. A must-visit—this is truly the SoHo of Beijing!

Jingshan Park is a historic 57-acre park situated on a hill, providing stunning panoramic views of the Forbidden City. Located in the Dongcheng district of Beijing, this area offers an ideal blend of rich history and modern attractions. Visitors can explore the renowned Forbidden City, now home to the Museum of the Imperial Palace, as well as Tiananmen Square and historical temples like the Temple of Heaven.
September 2025 5* Famous park in Beijing to get the top view of Forbidden city and Beijing skyline. The park is very nice and you need to climb stairs to reach high point. Compare to other park, this remains open till 8 pm and you can get good night view from the top. There is 360 deck so you can see forbidden city on one side and city view on the other side.

Beautiful view and relaxing place! I visited Jingshan Park in the evening and it was quite crowded, but totally worth it. The walk up the hill isn’t too steep, and once you reach the top, the view is absolutely stunning — you can see the entire Forbidden City stretched out right in front of you. The golden sunset over the rooftops makes it even more magical. It’s a perfect spot for photos, relaxing, or just taking a quiet moment above the busy city. Even with many visitors, the park still feels peaceful and full of history. Highly recommend visiting around sunset for the best atmosphere!

A very famous park behind the forbidden palace where you can get a high view of the forbidden city. Tickets cost like a 1-2 dollars if I remember correctly and it only takes about 10-15 minutes to hike up to the top. You not only get a nice view of the forbidden city but a nice view of the city as well. It’s also where the last emperor of the Ming dynastic hung himself.

If you didn't get an appointment to get into Tianamen Square or the Forbidden City and want to overlook both, this is the place to come. Go early in the morning because it gets crowded at the top temple. If you want to just check out the place, they have multiple temples you can get into and enjoy the scenery. Definitely worth a stop!

Jingshan Park is one of Beijing’s most historic and scenic spots. Famous as the site where the last Ming emperor tragically ended his life, the park today is a peaceful green space that offers some of the best panoramic views of the Forbidden City. Climbing the hill is not difficult, and from the top pavilion you’re rewarded with a sweeping perspective of the imperial palace’s golden rooftops stretching out in perfect symmetry. On clear days, the view is truly breathtaking and one of the best places to capture the scale of old Beijing.

I arrived 5ish, getting tickets on the spot is a breeze. Crowded but not as bad as other touristy spots. With patience and persistence you will surely get a spot to take scenic pics. I’m short in statute so can’t say my vantage point is ideal. Spotted two resident cat, one of which seemed to be zzz on the job 😂 all in all I spent 20 mins or so in the park as it was getting dark. All in all, it’s a Rmb2 well spent

Beihai Park, situated in the northwestern part of Beijing, is a stunning 69-hectare former imperial garden that first opened to the public in 1925. The park is connected to Shichahai at its northern end and features a massive lake. It boasts numerous royal towers, doorways, pavilions, and bridges that are illuminated at night, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
Beihai Park is one of the most iconic and historically rich parks in Beijing, offering a beautiful blend of nature, culture, and ancient architecture. Located just northwest of the Forbidden City, this massive imperial garden has been a peaceful retreat for centuries—originally built in the 11th century and continuously expanded by successive dynasties. One of the highlights of the park is the White Dagoba (or White Pagoda), a Tibetan-style stupa standing atop Jade Flower Island in the middle of Beihai Lake. The pagoda itself is striking in contrast to the lush greenery and blue waters that surround it. It has endured several earthquakes throughout history and was restored three times to preserve its structure and spiritual significance. The park is incredibly vast, featuring classical Chinese landscaping, winding stone pathways, quiet pavilions, and scenic viewpoints. Visitors can stroll along the lake, rent pedal boats or rowboats, and admire the serenity amidst the buzzing city life. It’s a great spot for photography, especially at sunset when the park glows in warm tones. However, it’s worth noting that Beihai Park can get very crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, with both tourists and locals flocking to enjoy its beauty. Despite the crowds, the atmosphere remains relaxing, and there are still plenty of corners where you can find peace. Entry costs are very reasonable: around 2 euros per person for the park entrance and an additional 2 euros if you’d like to enter the White Pagoda area. Tickets are sold separately, so be prepared to pay both fees if you want the full experience. Overall, Beihai Park is a must-visit if you’re in Beijing. Whether you’re a history lover, a nature enthusiast, or just looking for a place to unwind, this park offers something for everyone.

Good Park, Very cool in the summer and autumn, many Tibet Buddhist statues and very nice view when you are on a boat. I recommend that you ride the boats. It is a really beautiful view even though it is expensive. If you want to enter the park, it’s about ¥20 or $3 dollars. It is tricky to navigate without a map and there aren’t any so I recommend that you ask directions to staff. The park is good if you want to go for a little jog or if you want to just look at the statues and learn history.
Rei — Google review
It’s a lovely park for a leisurely stroll, with beautiful scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. However, be mindful if you’re visiting on a windy day — the wind tends to be much stronger here due to the open lake and lack of shelter. It can feel quite cold, even in late March. And there would be no boat if it’s windy days…
Amy S — Google review
So unbelievably beautiful at Beihai Park. If you are looking for a chill walk, this park is full of amazing views and hikes or even a boat ride.
Eva Y — Google review
Pretty park in the middle of Beijing with a big lake. Entry fee is very cheap and can be paid directly at one of the cashiers. Highlight is the white pagoda and the large areas with lotus. Worth a visit to escape the tourist masses around the forbidden city and to enjoy a bit off calm in the middle of the city centre.
S S — Google review
A popular recreation spot for both locals and tourists. Beihai Park epitomises the typical elements of Chinese landscape design - careful composition of water bodies, rocks, "mountains", plants, bridges, pavilions. There are also other attractions dotted around the Lake - amongst them is the impressive nine-dragon wall -tucked away in a secluded corner.
Ming — Google review
Beihai Park is one of Beijing’s oldest and most enchanting gardens, with origins that can be traced back as far as the Liao Dynasty. The centerpiece of the park is the vast artificial lake, dug by hand centuries ago, with the soil used to create the hill where the White Dagoba pagoda now stands. This brilliant feat of landscape design reflects the ingenuity of imperial garden planning in ancient China. Walking through the grounds, you get a sense of layered history—emperors once enjoyed these same lake views, shaded corridors, and pavilions. The glistening waters, willow-lined paths, and island temples make it an oasis of calm in the middle of modern Beijing. The White Dagoba on Qionghua Island remains the park’s iconic landmark, visible from many angles and especially beautiful at sunset.

Natural History Museums
The Beijing Museum of Natural History is a leading natural history museum in China, covering a vast floor space and housing over 200,000 items in its collection. The museum showcases exhibits on animals, fossils, plant life, and the human body. It features an extensive collection of paleontology, ornithology, mammals, and invertebrates that surpasses others nationwide. Visitors can explore ancient fossils such as the yellow river elephant skull fossils, giant Mamenchisaurus fossils and Sinormis fossils.
As someone who really loves nature and finds science fascinating, this museum was such a peaceful and inspiring stop during my time in Beijing. I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but once I walked in, I was completely drawn in. Giant dinosaur skeletons welcomed me right at the entrance, and from there it just kept getting better. The museum takes you on a journey through the history of life—from prehistoric ocean creatures all the way to mammals and early humans. There was something about seeing those massive fossils and carefully arranged dioramas that just made you pause and think about how far life has come. It wasn’t just about looking at bones—it was about imagining what the Earth used to be like. One of my favorite parts was the ancient mammals section. Seeing things like saber-toothed cats and mammoths up close was surreal. I also loved the plant life exhibit—it sounds simple, but they did a really good job showing how even plants evolved and adapted over time. It’s a bit quieter than some of the big tourist spots, which I actually liked—it gave me space to take my time, walk through slowly, and just be present. A few exhibits didn’t have full English translations, but it honestly didn’t matter too much. The visuals and overall vibe of the place carried it. Tips if you go: – It’s free, but you need to book a time slot online in advance. – Definitely take your time—it’s not a huge museum, but there’s a lot to take in. – It’s a great break if you want something more calm and reflective during your trip. – Right by the Temple of Heaven, so it’s easy to add to your day. This museum reminded me why I love learning about the natural world—it connects you to something bigger. I left feeling more grounded and more curious, which to me is the best kind of museum experience.

Note google map is NOT accurate in China. You can easily buy tickets at the counter. Elderly above 60 is free. 2 level museum that seems very basic. Not wow standard. Place to just explore for a short time. Toilets available.

Exciting in some ways, and disappointing in other ways! Admission is free, and the building is pretty easy to find. It's about a ten minute walk from 珠市口 subway station (line 7). There is very little English signage, but I used my google translate app's camera function to get a rough translation. The aquarium is amazingly pathetic and sad, don't bother going downstairs to see it unless you want to feel pity for some fish. However, the other exhibits, particularly the human origins exhibit, were really cool!!!
Lauren T — Google review
Well worth a visit. Queue is terrible like any other parts of Beijing, but the price to enter is pretty reasonable. Exhibitions are good.
Wei L — Google review
The museum is mainly directed at school age children in my opinion, with the displays being brief and easy to grasp, but of course the adults can still find a lot to see and enjoy here. The entry is free, which is really a great benefit. On the downside the museum was pretty crowded.
Michal T — Google review
Great place to go if you have children or like dinosaurs but wasn't the best natural history museum i i have been too. Also worth noting there was not much english signage anywhere so it can be hard to understand what your looking at.
Luke — Google review
for a dinosaur geek, have to say this museum was old, dirty and not as nice compared to Shanghai’s natural history museum. The dinosaur replica looks very fake.
Ember S — Google review
The museum is a decent, but its exhibits feel limited. If odd looking animatronic dinosaurs are your thing, than pay this place a visit. There are a good number of dinosaur skeletons on display, but it’s too obvious they’re replicas. Don’t be fooled by the cafeteria sign; there’s no food down there, just an empty, sketchy open area where parents and kids sit on the floor and doze off. In fact, there isn’t any proper food in the museum- only a few snacks- so make sure you plan ahead. What I do like though is the inclusion of an aquarium in the basement. It might take a bit of navigating to find, but it is quite large and definitely worth a look.

Beijing Zoo, also known as Bei jing dong wu yuan, is a historic zoo established in 1906 and located in the northwest area of the city. Covering over 220 acres, it is one of the oldest zoos in China. The zoo houses an impressive collection of nearly 15,000 animals from about 1,000 species, making it the largest in the country.
You just can’t resist the cuteness of the pandas & red pandas. The polar bear & grizzly bear are huge. I came to visit in the afternoon around 3pm, when half of the animal went sleeping already. Would recommend you to go there in the morning.
Lam M — Google review
3.5 Stars – A Historic Zoo with Mixed Impressions Beijing Zoo is one of the oldest and most historically significant zoos in the world, and its massive grounds reflect that legacy. The park is very large and spacious, with an adjacent aquarium that requires a separate ticket. It’s located in an unusual spot, partially built beneath a highway overpass, which gives it a unique, urban atmosphere. The animal variety is truly impressive—you’ll see species here that are rare or even absent in many other zoos. A highlight is the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, an endangered species with only about 1,000 individuals left in the wild. The zoo plays an important role in raising awareness for such rare animals. That said, the zoo is a place of strong contrasts. Some parts of the park are modern, spacious, and well-maintained, offering animals more natural environments. You can tell the zoo has expanded and developed new areas over the years. However, many of the older enclosures are in poor condition—they’re small, outdated, and in some cases dirty. Sadly, some animals appear neglected or stressed, especially in the less updated sections. It’s clear the zoo has struggled to renovate consistently across the entire property. For children, it’s still a memorable experience to see such a wide variety of animals up close, including elephants, big cats, and exotic birds. But for adults, especially those sensitive to animal welfare, some parts of the zoo may be difficult to witness. If you want to see the giant pandas, one of the zoo’s most popular attractions, be aware that it requires an additional ticket. While the outdoor panda enclosure is beautiful and spacious, the indoor area feels neglected and long overdue for renovation. Unless seeing the pandas is a top priority, you could easily skip the zoo from your Beijing sightseeing list. While it offers some memorable moments, it doesn’t quite measure up to the city’s many world-class attractions.

Very easy to get into the zoo only 19 yen for the zoo entrance and panda House can buy it in person or scan the QR code and add in passport number and details Foreign children at the age of 6 - free admission Foreign senior citizens at the age of 60 and above get - free admission with their passport Downside is that to go visit Meng Lan panda you have to wait until he wake up to go view and there’s no rough time for it. - Panda Ice cream with green tea cookie - 2/10 - Panda Ice cream - 1/10 vanilla flavoured and not nice and very artificial vanilla taste. Looks nice 10 yen to go on the buggy

Loved seeing the pandas but hated the poor conditions that the animals are kept in. Many of them just lie listlessly on the ground, as if they have no energy to move. I hope they're at least being fed properly. A huge, spread out site meant I wasn't able to see all the animals I wanted/planned to see.

Amazing! We came on September 2nd the day before the military parade and the place was dead quiet! Definitely recommended it regardless but having the place to ourselves was incredible!

What I loved about China is the pride and seriousness they take into everything they do. The zoo was vast and we didn't get to see all of it at once. I was sad not to be able to see the australian animals but it was intersting to see some pandas, even though they weren't in an entertaining mood lol. It is worth the visit and is very affordable too.

1. Prepare your wechat pay, scan&pay to buy entry tickets skipping que. 2. Go for the olympic panda first before anywhere ; que will get really long. 3. Hop on the buggy for 10rmb/person (wechatpay only) quick tour around the zoo. 4. Visit the aquarium for dolphin show.

A world-class zoo with dozens and dozens of different species in well thought out environments. Of course, the panda exhibit is the star attraction, and when we went, it did not disappoint. Yet many of the other fine exhibits we found were equally compelling.

The 798 Art Zone is a former arms factory in Beijing that has been transformed into a vibrant hub for art, culture, and creativity. The area now houses artist studios, galleries, shops, and restaurants within its decommissioned factory buildings. Once a haven for struggling artists, the zone has gained international recognition and drawn in art buyers and tourists alike. Its Bauhaus architecture serves as an iconic symbol of Beijing's reinvention as a trendy cultural center.
A must visit in Beijing. Plan at least 5 hours. It’s busy but never feels overcrowded. All generations taking a stroll and only a few international tourist are spotted. It’s a melting pot of art, design, architecture, antiques or vintage or some modern shops also a lot of nice cafes are available. It’s not anymore a pure art area in an old industrial complex, but to be honest the commercial part isn’t disturbing it’s rather blends in well.

‘A surprising art section in Beijing’ Without any expectations, I decided to visit 798 Art zone. I was positively surprised how spacious it was and how many art galleries you could find. You can feel the influence on the architecture from post war Europe in the art zone. I definitely enjoyed feeling like I was walking in Europe. The only thing to keep in mind that it is not east to reach by public transportation and it can take a long time to find a taxi!

The place is large and well-organized, with many artworks displayed. Some of them required payment for entrance. The atmosphere was nice. It was one of my favorite places during this visit.

Reasonably quiet trending location situated on the outskirts of Beijing. There’s a lot of art studios here, and the location itself is like an art museum.

Overall a positive experience but some areas could see some improvements. 1. Bathrooms should have more western style toilets 2. Better maps and road signage for the area district. We like the variety of shopping and exhibitions. We were a bit disappointed when some of the exhibits were closed. We did enjoy the Jingdong soap museum.

Houhai, part of the Schichahai complex in Beijing, was originally built for the royal Yuan family's enjoyment. Today, it is a bustling hub of activity from morning until late at night. During the day, visitors can enjoy street-side haircuts, pencil portraits, al-fresco jam sessions and electric boat rides on the lake. As evening falls, the area transforms into a lively scene with karaoke bars and street vendors offering fragrant snacks.
Nice park to stroll around. We saw many old folks enjoying a game of chess, fishing and even swimming! Can take a boat ride - those self peddle for 4 pax is 180 rmb per hour.

Nice park to walk with a small shops area that provides some interesting local foods. Supposedly a lovely evening walk with pubs and restaurants.

This is one of the best areas for tourists to come get a drink. There are many bars for you to choose from and there is a wide variety of music, so you may select the one with the most suitable genre to you. The bar is next to the lake which can be nice to take a stroll around especially in the evening as the sun is slowly setting. There are also some food streets that are located in the area, but you will find better food streets else where.

Houhai (后海) is a great place to take a casual stroll by a body of water in the middle of Beijing. Start from any end of it and loop around for a complete view. Its proximity to various other tourist attractions, such as Prince Gong’s Mansion (恭王府) and the former residence of Soong Ching Ling (wife of Dr Sun Yat Sen) makes it a good in between stop for a change of scenery. Houhai is also known for its bar street where there are dozens of bars offering live music and cozy seats. Many of these bars also double as cafes in the afternoons as business is slow these days - they serve overpriced drinks and finger food but are nice for having a place to sit down and warm up, especially on a snowy day.
Eileen C — Google review
This is simply a lake in the middle of Beijing, although the day I went is very hot, there's a lot of people crowded on the street, however, the view is still stunning. In my opinion, the best season to be here is not Summer, is Spring, not as hot as summer, but the trees are still green, so the view is the same as in the summer time.

Beijing Olympic Park, also known as Olympic Green, is a sprawling complex built for the 2008 Olympics. It covers nearly 12 square kilometers and features contemporary stadiums and sculptures. The iconic Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed the 'Bird's Nest', is the centerpiece of the park. At night, the park offers a stunning nightscape with the Bird's Nest and Water Cube illuminated in vibrant colors. This modern architectural masterpiece stands as a striking legacy of the 2008 Summer Olympics hosted in Beijing.
Located in Chaoyang, China 🇨🇳. Also known as the Olympic Green, this is where the 2008 Summer Olympic Games were held and also the 2022 Winter Olympic Games were held. Since the games, it has become a public activity centre. It’s situated 11 kilometres north of the Forbidden City, in the northern part of Beijing. The must sees of the park are the Birds Nest, the Water Cube, the Beijing National Indoor Stadium and the Olympic Forest Park. The total area covers 2,864 acres so it’s huge. The park consists of three parts. The Central area, the Olympic Forest Park in the North and the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium in the South. The Central section has the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube. The Northern section (Forest Park) is divided into Northern and Southern areas. The Southern area is dedicated to artificial landscapes. The Northern area is closer to nature and has wilder features. The Southern section (Olympic Sports Centre Stadium) was built in 1986 and used for the Asian Games in 1990. It has the stadium, gymnasium and training fields for hockey 🏑, football 🏉, tennis 🎾 and other sports.it wasn’t a planned trip here. I came with a tour group and was a last minute add on. I am so glad we came. It’s huge. It’s really lovely to stroll and appreciate the beautiful buildings from the Olympic Games. They are so impressive and unique. Everything was built on such a Grand Scale. I particularly liked the Bird’s Nest. Very cool. There is toilet facilities but I laughed at the machine where you have to get your photo taken to get toilet paper 🧻. You only get one or two squares. Best to remember to take your own toilet paper when you’re out and about in China. We came at the end of the day so we got to see the buildings during day time and at night when they light up. We also got to have a look inside the Birds Nest. Fabulous!! We also had a look in the Olympic Museum. Some amazing things in there. I would definitely recommend a visit. Thumbs Up!!! 😊👍😊👍

Beijing Olympic Park is an impressive and beautifully designed place that showcases China’s pride and architectural excellence. It was built for the 2008 Olympic Games and still feels grand and modern. The park is huge, with wide open spaces, clean walkways, and iconic structures like the Bird’s Nest Stadium and the Water Cube, which look especially stunning at night when they are lit up. It’s a great place to walk around, take photos, and feel the Olympic spirit. The area is well-maintained, peaceful, and a perfect mix of history, sports, and modern art. Visiting the park gives a real sense of China’s achievement and global vision.

Attended a concert at the Bird’s Nest — the venue is huge and it takes quite a bit of walking to locate the correct entrance, so do plan extra time to get around. The lifts to the booth rooms were very slow, and I ended up missing the start of the show. If you’re a foreigner attending an event here, make sure to arrive early. Security checks are thorough — you’ll need to show your ID or passport, and there are multiple body and bag scans. The terrace seats outside the booth area were not well maintained, and many seat numbers were faded or missing. I eventually had to sit on the dusty steps as I couldn't locate my seat and someone else had taken it. The atmosphere and energy of the concert were still amazing once it started, but the venue management could improve on signage, seating upkeep, and overall crowd flow.

A stroll around Beijing Olympic Park is an impressive experience filled with the grandeur and memories of the 2008 Olympics. The spacious area is perfect for a leisurely walk or taking photos. The highlights are the Bird’s Nest stadium and the Water Cube, which remain stunning and iconic, especially in the evening when they are beautifully illuminated. The park also features clean and shaded walkways, along with various amenities such as shops, restaurants, and seating areas. The relaxed atmosphere makes it ideal for families or photography enthusiasts. This location is not only a symbol of sportsmanship but also a reflection of Beijing’s modern development and innovative design.

Museums
The National Art Museum of China, established in 1958, is a vast museum featuring ancient and modern Chinese artwork. The museum was inaugurated by Chairman Mao in 1963 to exhibit modern Chinese art, including traditional ink and wash paintings as well as socialist-themed pieces. Despite its historical significance, the museum also showcases contemporary works that have garnered international attention.
The museum is inside a beautiful building. I had to book beforehand through a mini app on WeChat. It was free entry and I had to show my passport to enter. They have a wonderful variety of Chinese artists with paintings in lots of different mediums. There were also several different exhibitions going on promoting young artists. There was also a big collection of Chinese traditional paintings on the first floor. On the top floor there was a big collection of historical traditional Chinese paintings. Although not all the explanations had English translations it was still really interesting to see paintings from Chinese artists. There is also museum staff around every corner that are helpful and make sure the paintings are not touched. It was nice that the museum had a collection of both modern and historical artists.

Easy walk from Longfusi area to the museum. No Q on a weekday. Just show your passport for free entry. Good number of artworks like calligraphy and sculptures etc. expansive area with about 4 floors of works depending on how many exhibitions at the moment. Refreshed quite regularly. Quite a worthwhile after lunch visit and good to understand the Chinese culture.

It is must to visit art museum in Beijing. Here you have an opportunity to attend different exhibitions of Chinese Painting, Sculpture, Calligraphy and more. All of them very beautiful and unique. You will learn a lot about culture and history of China. Tickets can be purchased on the site with passport. The Museum located in the city center, so can be easily accessed either by foot or any other form of transportation. There is nice „Namoc Coffee“ cafe nearby so you can have a rest and try tasty snacks. Highly recommend to visit this museum.

Aldona B — Google review
You might think that it is hard to argue with a National Art Museum nearby the Forbidden City, easily accessible by subway and free of charge. Despite all of these pluses, I was not that impressed. Let me elaborate.... 1) While it is certainly free of charge, getting in the museum is not free of hassle, including having to get in one line to show our passports to get free tickets and then having to go to the back of another line to use the ticket to enter. As a result, it took a lot of time to get in, actually. 2) The museum is not easy to navigate and there are few signs to guide. When we decided to leave, we struggled to find the exit and the correct elevator to access the ground floor. It was unnecessarily complicated and as is sometimes the case in China, there was a dearth of explanatory signs or maps. 3) As mentioned, the exit is on a different side of the building than the entrance, basically releasing you in an alley from which you have to figure out how to get back to the street (some streets are blocked off) 4) Most importantly, I was rather underwhelmed by the art on display. I recognise that this is a subjective matter and others may certainly disagree but for my wife and myself, we found it to be less than impressive. With all that said, free is a nice price and the location is convenient if you are visiting Beihai Park or the Forbidden City. Pro Tip: The museum closes at 5:00 so I would not recommend trying to enter much after 3:00. With the wait to enter, especially in the afternoon, you might find yourself wondering if it was worth the trouble.
Geoff — Google review
Unlike other comments ticket can be provided for foreigners on the day by helpful staff. Exhibitions a bit disappointing. Some good modern art but no real reflection of Chinese art's history.

Free, but currently just a bunch of calligraphy in October 2025. Not so interesting to look at. Got the whole art museum covered in an hour, and I took photos of everything. I’d suggest previewing the available exhibitions to see whether it’s worth visiting before you decide to take a trip here.

The China National Film Museum, situated on a sprawling 65-acre site, is a monumental tribute to the rich history of Chinese filmmaking. This colossal museum stands as the world's largest national film professional museum and was established to honor the centenary of Chinese cinema. Boasting 21 expansive exhibition halls, it showcases over 1,500 films, 4,300 images, and an impressive collection of 40,000 items related to film culture.
Recommended by the local friend to come here. I don’t see much tourists here. No tickets were needed if you’re not watching the IMAX theater here. It’s great for families with kids looking for something to do in Beijing. Full length led screen from bottom to top. Also read up on the Chinese film exhibits and history. Some exhibits were close for maintenance and some look rather dated. But the giant led screen makes up for all of it! My toddler absolutely loves it.

Whenever you visit Beijing don't forget to travel to the China national film museum too although you like or dislike it. For me? It's worth my time to learn and fall in love more after visiting particularly in excitement about their film technology which amazingly develops so fast. And yes I feel positive and surprised so much indeed.

We went to see a movie on the full IMAX screen - which was a wonderful experience - and also got to see some of the museum beforehand. I’m a professional filmmaker so it was cool to see old equipment from throughout history, included some I learned on myself. About the cinema: nowadays, the scaled-down “IMAX” in mall theaters has become most people’s idea of what the format is, but if you have a chance to see a film on the true 5-story tall screen, go! I’m a snob about picture and sound quality, and both here were excellent. One note is that if you want to see the entire museum beforehand, check the hours and make sure to get there in time. Various exhibitions close early. Going back this weekend to see Oppenheimer and can’t wait!

Well, as expected it’s full of people during the summer and there are no shadows where you can take a break. I recommend visiting during spring or even winter without the huge crowd of tourists. A must see if you are in Beijing. You must get tickets ahead of time and those are hard to come by during the high season (you will need help from a Chinese speaking person as the "ticket war" starts at 8pm every day and tickets go in a matter of seconds. Just an impressive monument of imperial China. Also, if you intend to visit Tiananmen, you will also need tickets (I didn't have any hence didn't go). I visited 15 years ago and it was never as crazy.

Yuanmingyuan Park, located in northwestern Beijing, is home to the ruins of the Old Summer Palace. Once an imperial residence known for its stunning architecture and gardens, it was looted and destroyed during the Second Opium War in 1860. The palace was renowned for its vast art and antiquities collection. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Dashuifa Site, a poignant reminder of the palace's history.
The older summer palace is so huge that we only managed to completed a small area in order to complete the rest of our itinerary for the day. The ruins are magnificent although much has crumpled to ground.

It seems like 100 years ago but in the 1990's I live at 101 middle school. I could go into this park after hours in the evening through a small "secret" gate. There were times I was the only person there. This young American having this huge park all to myself. I'd ride my bike around or just sit next to the lake while the sun sat. I can hardly believe that it I lived that experience. I recall during several months the park was being renovated and the lake was drained. I simply walked out to the island and looked at the old structure standing there. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Big park! Lots of historical ruins. Would be great if you have a guide to explain its significance. Not easy to get around with kids as it’s impossible to cover everything in a day. To save your legs, you could take a boat ride. There was quite a queue for the boat ride, however I came on a weekend so that is to be expected. If you only have limited time and have to choose between this and summer palace I would choose summer place anytime.

This park is especially beautiful in autumn. It’s very close to the subway. But normally in autumn when is the leaves turn yellow it will be full of people. So if you want to go here and take beautiful pictures you should go before 8 o’clock in the morning. Normally in high season, they would ask you to book ticket one day before you go. It’s always check this problem before you decide to visit how this park.

Although most of the structures have been destroyed, but this is a place that everyone should visit. Looking at the ruins, you can only imagine how glorious this place was and see the brilliance of the architect, engineer and the workmanship. There's nothing we can do about it being destroyed by the war, we can only hope the stolen artifices will be returned to where it belongs. Hopefully one day, we don't have to see those items in another country's museum. For those who are planning to visit this amazing park, please be prepared to walk for long hours. If you can, spend some fun time in the maze. My kids really enjoyed it. There is no restaurant in the park, but you can get some snacks and instant noodles in the souvenior shop. The park operates until quite late at night, but I won't advise to stay on unless you are familiar with the places, equipped with GPS or have a torch light with you. The last time I visited this park was in 2015. Lucky me, I saw black swans back then. This time I was not so lucky; perhaps there were too many motor boats operating on the lake. Nevertheless, Yuan Ming Yuan will always had a place in my memories due to its imperfection. Maybe we all need to lose sometime before we know how to appreciate it.

Food options are affordable with plenty of cafes and snack stands, and prices are noticeably lower than at other similar parks. Don’t miss the incredible live shows featuring stunning special effects and talented performers. There’s also a fantastic petting zoo where you can interact with and feed animals – ideal for families with kids! We chose Happy Valley over Universal Studios for a more local experience—plus, Universal is available in many places, and the Beijing one offers similar attractions to others we’ve visited. We arrived around opening time, but found that rides start operating in phases, so not everything opens right away. The rides were fun but felt a bit rougher than in other parks—I started feeling dizzy after just two or three. My 11-year-old, however, was perfectly fine, so maybe I just needed more breakfast! Queues for the popular rides were short, and we managed to go on most roller coasters at least twice. There were also several shows throughout the day, though we skipped them to make the most of our time on the rides. While the merchandise isn’t as premium or recognizable as Universal’s, the park definitely offers better value for money. The only downside is the layout—there aren’t many shortcuts between zones, so we had to walk all the way back to the entrance just to reach KFC. Speaking of KFC, ordering was tricky. They don’t take counter orders or have digital kiosks; you must order via the local KFC app, which requires a local phone number. Thankfully, the manager kindly helped us order through his app and even paid first—we repaid him via Alipay. After lunch, we rented a buggy cart, which saved us tons of time and energy for the rest of the day.

If you want some adrenaline rush... this the perfect place. A lot of roller-coaster rides.. Try to plan visit in summers... couple of rides closed during winter. KFC and other fast food stalls inside. No worries about in-house food or lunch

Golden mask dynasty show was awesome. A dance drama love story of king and queen is beautifully portrayed in this show. Queen’s sacrifice to save the country and people makes it fascinating. The sound, lights, costumes, acting, dances and water flow effects are beyond words. If you visit Beijing, don’t miss this epic show.

Well okay I want to thank you , it's just like my grandmother used to tell me when I was little if I remember correctly once upon a time, when I was younger, and she would say to me, just as an advice, it was a few years ago, she said when we visited China it was there, but just in my own personal opinion and she agreed with me and that's when she told me what I have to share with you all in our own life experiences nothing makes sense but that is the beauty of life, isn't it? But again, that is just my opinion and my grandmother would agree if she was still here. RIP.

Every thing in this park is ether poorly made or needs a major reconstruction . Not worth of visiting, especially considering price of the ticket to the park (20 EUR).

Great place for photo ops and a fun place to visit with children as well. It's all there, the Leaning tower of Pisa, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben ... A bit run down but it adds to the charm. At 100 ¥ for an adult rather pricey for Beijing.

My parents took me there when it was first opened back in the 90s (1995ish), I still have a souvenir picture of my family posing at the front gate. And look the recent pictures from all of the google reviewers just bring me back the memories. It is an eye opening park for a young Chinese kid back then to know how diverse and multicultural the world is. Still makes me appreciate the world today

Maliandao Chayuan Tea City, situated in the southwestern Xuanwu District, is a haven for tea enthusiasts. Boasting nearly a thousand tea stores offering leaves from China's seven largest tea-producing regions, this destination offers an extensive variety of teas. Popular among both locals and tourists, it provides an immersive experience in Chinese tea culture. Visitors can explore and indulge in the diverse world of teas while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Maliandao Chayuan Tea City.
I visited Ma Lian Dao twice during a study abroad program that stopped in Beijing for a few days, some years ago (2014?) - once on my own, then again with a friend after I bragged about my initial visit. There are a few very vivid memories of that trip that I remember often and cherish. Ma Lian Dao is such a location -albeit one geared toward selling tea. -- Keep in mind that I don't speak any Chinese at this point, and my reading ability is abysmal -- ADVICE - Take a [real] taxi. Enunciate "Ma Lian Dao" as your destination. ...Avoid being lectured in Chinese that your pronunciation is atrocious, and that 'maliandao' isn't run together like that. (Some lectures transcend language barriers.) You will be served tea at businesses. If you keep emptying your cup, they will keep filling it. You will never leave. Consider it a clash of cultures, and give way to theirs. Also, buy lots of tea. The only place in China I bought more tea on that trip was in Kunming. Another vivid memory... Maliandao - pronounced 'ma lian dao' Chayuan - lit. "Tea City" Tea City - stupid repetition for the foreigners
David M — Google review
Such a tourist trap for sureeeeeee! 3 levels of tea shops and tea accessories. The price, of course, way up there. So if you don’t know the tea price, I really don’t think you should even go here. Nothing special any other tea shop.

Museum
The Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution in Beijing is a comprehensive showcase of China's military history, spanning ancient to modern times. The museum covers the revolutionary path of the Communist Party from 1921 to 1949, as well as the history of China and the building of the People's Army. Spread over three floors and 6300 square meters, it features an extensive collection including weaponry, models, relics, art pieces, and historical photographs.
Worth to visit if you’re in Beijing. Entrance ticket is free but you need to book your tickets online in WeChat. Definitely worth the trouble if you into military stuffs. Came at 10am and left at 2pm. It’s huge and if you really read up all the display notes you won’t finished the whole exhibition before they close. Liked the basement level where they exhibit the artillery and armor. Mostly from WW2 and the Korean War. Well maintained.
Adrick L — Google review
The Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution stands tall and still. Gray stone. Cold metal. A place of war and memory. Inside, old guns rest behind glass. Tanks and jets, rusted and real, sit heavy on the floor. They fought once. Now they wait. There is not much English. A few signs. A few words. But the steel speaks loud. You understand without reading. It smells of oil and dust. Of history. Of men who marched and fought and died. It is not pretty. It is not soft. But it is real and informative. And that is enough.
Mikael H — Google review
A very large museum filled with lots of Chinese history. There are a mix of models and real tanks, weapons etc. Even a model submarine that you can walk through. There is lots of information to read and learn about and an art gallery with breathtaking pieces.
Beatriz F — Google review
A very extensive and well put together museum! It was an incredible visit, marked by lengthy and detailed collections of all sorts of weapons, with exhibitions focused on the Second Sino-Japanese War and Civil War period. The vast amount of guns on display, including many rarities is something that anyone passionate about military history and the history of China would appreciate. The exhibits also help in introducing and understanding Chinese culture and modern history, as the focus of the museum is the very events which have made the China of today. Do take time when visiting as it is a very large museum. Booking is as, as of time of writing, limited to online (no walk ins) and reservations must be made. I recommend utilising WeChat and finding sellers who pre book the tickets and can guarantee you a slot. Definitely a highlight of Beijing, do not miss it!

You can buy tickets at the museum to the left of the ticket check at the main entrance, no wechat account needed. The museum itself is interesting enough to warrant a visit, but nothing special.
Paul E — Google review
An absolutely massive military history museum. You'd need at least 3-4 hours to see everything here. I highly recommend focusing on the first floor and the B1 underground floor first, as they have the large model airplanes and tanks. The top floor has beautiful artwork, while the second floor has a huge arsenal of weapons on display. Free admission--simply head to the far east ticket booth window with your passport handy.

Ritan Park, located in the heart of Beijing, is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends historical landmarks with stunning natural scenery. The park features elegant scarlet temples and sprawling gardens, creating a harmonious atmosphere for visitors to explore. In addition to its cultural attractions, the park offers ponds, rockeries, and the Temple of the Sun. Visitors can witness locals practicing Tai chi and dancing in the mornings while enjoying free entry to this lovely city park.
This park provides a temporary reprieve from the bustling streets.of Beijing. It is free to enter, and there are plenty of scenic spots to take a selfish or to just sit and take in the sounds of the birds in the trees. There is a decent sized playground for children, but my children found the platform path (think super Mario platform game type of path) around the lake to be much more entertaining! Also there are a couple of hills that provide a nice view of the city skyline. Finally, there are several trees that are over a century old, with one tree that is over a millennium old! Very impressive to think that the tree has lived through so much. Overall, would definitely recommend taking the time to visit.

I have fond memories of visiting here, particularly at night when I was dealing with morning sickness. Ritan Park is a beautiful public park that is free to enter. I never made it inside the little tea house (ex-hubby refused to let me go in), but I did manage to get to the top where the pagoda stands. There's a quiet charm about it, but when I lived in Beijing there was always something to see and do, whether watching people dance, practice tai-chi, play games, or do the wall climbing. Of course, if you simply wanted to wander around and simply relax, you can do that, too.

The Marco Polo Bridge, also known as Lugou Bridge, is a historic stone bridge located in the Fengtai District, 15 km southwest of Beijing's city center. Dating back to 1189 A.D., it was praised by the explorer Marco Polo and has been famous since the 13th century. The bridge spans the Yongding River and is adorned with stone lions on pillars along its sides.
橋面的石磚跟欄杆上的石獅, 很有歷史感 The Marco Polo Bridge or Lugou Bridge is a stone bridge located 15 km southwest of Beijing's city center in the Fengtai District. It bridges the Yongding River, a major tributary of Hai River. Situated at the eastern end of the bridge is the Wanping Fortress, a historic 17th-century fortress, with the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance. The Marco Polo Bridge is 266.5 meters (874 ft) in length and 9.3 m (30.5 ft) in width, supported on 10 piers and 11 segmental arches. Hundreds of artistically unique stone lions from different eras line both sides of the bridge. The most intriguing feature of these beasts is the fact that there are more lions hiding on the head, back or under the belly or on paws of each of the big lions. However, record has it that there were originally a total of 627 lions. The posture of each lion varies, as do their ages.

Lugou Bridge, with its over 500 stone lions, each differently shaped, was originally built in 1189. During the past 800 plus years it was repaired, sections rebuilt, and reconstructed. The stone-arch bridge is 266 metres long and has a width of 9.3 metres.

It's known for being pedestrian-friendly, making it a great place to wander freely without worrying about traffic. The area offers a mix of modern shopping malls and folk sections where you can find anything from major brands to items sold by street vendors.
Wangfujing Street is one of the most vibrant and iconic places in Beijing! It offers a great mix of modern shopping malls, historic stores, and traditional street food. We came here by metro, and the station is conveniently located right by the street. The area is pedestrian-only, which makes it enjoyable to walk around without traffic. The Snack Street was definitely a highlight — you’ll find everything from candied hawthorn and grilled lamb skewers to more adventurous options like scorpions and starfish (yes, really!). It gets very lively in the evening, so prepare for big crowds. The shopping options are also diverse, with both international brands and local specialty shops. The street feels safe, clean, and full of energy. Tip: Come a bit early if you want to avoid the evening rush. It can get extremely crowded later in the day, especially on weekends. Overall, a fun and authentic Beijing experience — highly recommended if you’re in the city!

Wangfujing Pedestrian Street is a must-visit if you’re in Beijing, especially for first-time travelers who want a taste of both traditional and modern China. The street is clean, lively, and well-organized, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and street food stalls lining both sides. It’s pedestrian-only, which makes walking around relaxing and safe, even when it gets crowded in the evenings. There’s a great mix of local and international brands here—perfect if you’re looking to do some shopping. From high-end department stores to smaller local boutiques, there’s something for every budget. For food lovers, the snack street is a major highlight. You’ll find a wide range of traditional Chinese snacks—some adventurous like scorpions on sticks, others more familiar like dumplings, skewers, and sweet treats. Prices are reasonable, though a bit higher than local markets. The area is well-lit at night and feels safe, with a lot of tourists and locals alike enjoying the atmosphere. One small tip: wear comfortable shoes—there’s a lot to explore, and the side alleys often hide hidden gems like tea shops and souvenir stands. While it can get a little commercialized, especially compared to more local markets, Wangfujing still retains its charm and is a great introduction to Beijing’s urban culture. It’s easily accessible by subway and close to many attractions like the Forbidden City, so it’s a convenient stop on your itinerary. Great for shopping, snacking, people-watching, and soaking in the buzz of the city.

I bought a group purchase of 98 yuan, but I can only enter one adult and one child. I need to add an additional 10 yuan for each adult. Each project is given a cup of carrots, and you are not allowed to bring your own food to feed the small animals. There were only three or four alpacas and goats. The area is small. The only bright spot may be the little white rabbit. You can get up close and personal. It's very small and will follow you around. It's very cute. The piglets drink milk quite well. When fishing, take your children with you so that they won’t fall off. It won’t take long for the adults to lose the fish, but they will be tossed away by the children. However, I did not lose too long and I lost three fish. It was not bad. It was mainly because the people around me shared their experiences with me. The food should not be too big, just enough to almost cover the hook. When the fish bites the hook, he will pull it up immediately. But sometimes I pull it up without hooking it. It doesn't matter. I just put it back where it was. The greedy fish just now is still there. Will continue to come here to eat. However, if no fish comes to eat for a long time, or if the fish just looks at the hook and then leaves, it may be that the hook is exposed and it will not continue to eat. Just get new fish food. You can take the fish you catch home, but you must bring your own bag or fish basin, because the store does not provide one. If you don’t have a bag, you will have to spend money to buy a fish box.

I really like this park. First visited in 2007 while at the paleontology institute up the road on internship, and several years later would jog here from Renmin University up the road. A much welcomed break from the intensity of the city, with numerous scenic spots. Great place to draw in the spring. Plus it's free. Whenever the family goes back to Beijing, we swing by here and then hit up restaurants behind Minzu University.

It’s not terrible for a park in Beijing... but it’s certainly nothing special. The man-made lake is nowhere near as spectacular as those of the Summer Palace or Shichahai. The park is, in actuality, designed to be an evacuation center in case a natural disaster such as an earthquake suddenly strikes the area. You can probably take a nice short walk here, but compared to all the other options you have in Beijing, it’s just below average.
