History Museums
The Dunhuang Museum, situated in the southern part of Dunhuang City, is a treasure trove of historical relics from the Silk Road and cultural artifacts from the Mogao Grottoes. Its unique appearance resembles the walls of the Han Dynasty's Great Wall and beacon towers. This museum offers a glimpse into ancient trade, strategic significance, and rich culture.
Dunhuang Museum is well laid out in a chronological order. Entry is free of charge. There is one Preface Hall and five Exhibition Halls. Tourists can visit these halls one by one to know the history of Dunhuang from prehistoric times to the Qing Dynasty. It housed artifacts & relics relating to history of Dunhuang and its importance on Silk Road. There are quite a few sculptures of important persons in Dunhuang history as you make your way through the museum. It is a long walk down to the special exhibit area, which had great Buddhist pictures and an exhibition on silk. There were two gift shops here which had quite a wide variety of items on sale. Definitely worth the visit if you are in Dunhuang. Well curated, lots to see, read and learn about the rich local area history. However, we didn't have much time to spend there.

Get to see the exact replica of Cave 3 and 45 from the Mogao Grottoes, with cave 3 not being opened to the public. Inside have relics and history of Dun Huang. Had only 1 hour to visit so we got a narrator and quick tour of the museum before we had to go to our next destination.
Wong S — Google review
This was incorporated in our tour itinerary. The Mogao caves were interesting and spectacular. The artistry and effort put in is amazing. The museum housed artifacts and relics which was interesting. Such relics are always interesting because they reveal the daily life of the people of the past. However, we didn't have much time to spend there.

Hundreds of caves dug out of a cliff face. The paintings are fantastic and the hues and colours still so vivid after 2000 years. The technique of perspective painting which the world was led to believe developed during the European art renaissance period existed in these caves more then 600 years before the European Art renaissance. Experience of a live time, so much history

awesome museum of history and artefacts. worthy of a visit

Ok Need more english version in every exhibition.
Zane N — Google review
It's a free, quiet museum within walking distance from downtown. You can scan a QR code at each exhibit to get access to some audio explanations but they're all in Mandarin. Exhibits are separated by dynasty. We visited in December and we were the only two people in the entire museum.
Mike X — Google review
Awesome museum on the way to the famous Crecent Moon Spring site. It's also in the walking distance from downtown. It's a must see if you are interested in Silk Road trade and history of Chinese presence in the area. It's a quiet museum with lots of artefacts so don't skip it if you are into learing about the two thousand year history of the Silk Road.

Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring are two breathtaking highlights that define the enchanting landscape of Dunhuang. Mingsha Mountain, also known as the Singing Sand Dunes, stretches impressively across 40 kilometers and boasts a peak height of 1,715 meters. Its vibrant sands shimmer in hues of red, yellow, green, black, and white—a true testament to nature's artistry shaped by centuries of wind.
A big Dunhuang Unesco Global Geopark Guide Map signboard show us the layout plan of Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Spring before Park, infact as we venture further, Crescent Spring is surrounded by sand dunes known as the Mingsha Mountain (鳴沙山). Our group today is taken to have a camel ride along the so called the Echoing-Sand Dune to Crescent Lake!!! Indeed an exciting bumpy & humping camel ride...then slowly strode the other side of dune. The Camel Guide made stop after 10mins, he asked if we want our photographs taken, he will use our mobile camera at a charge of RMB20 per person. Well layout Directory Signboard leads tourist to walk through the Crescent Spring Temple, its gift shop and the scenic spot around the Dunhuang Unesco Global Geopark !

Awesome place. Would say it's the main highlight our this trip. Buy Desert orange covers at parking area - 3 pairs for 15cny, inside sells 20cny each. Desert camel ride is a must go 120cny. Glider is awesome, 1st time took route no 2 cost 580 CNY. Take off and glide over desert and see the crescent moon lake.

So glad the weather was clear. Beautiful place and well worth the trip. Had fun walking up to the top of the sand dune. Make sure to follow the wooden ladder up because it's definitely tiring amd tough walking up without the ladder! Fun time riding the camel too. Highly recommend this place
Joanne L — Google review
Personally, I feel that this attraction is a waste of time. Probably more suitable for youngsters who enjoy dressing up to take a million photos by the sand dune. Other than that, there’s a camel ride which is RMB 130 for 40mins. When the sun sets, there is a concert and visitors sit by the sand dunes to watch the concert/laser performance. It isn’t worth the time because - low quality singers grace the stage. One sang out of tune. - The laser performance is quite basic. Beware of the costume scam.
Tan T — Google review
A very picturesque place! The dunes are beautiful and I just couldn't stop taking photos of the camel convoys or people wearing traditional customs. Yes, I know they built a huge business on some sand dunes...but who cares. It is spectacular!
Norbert E — Google review
awesome view and access was very convenient. camel rides and walking up to the top of dunes were easy with wooden planks. restaurants are also available.

Oasis in a sandy desert, a short ride from Dunhuang. Go late in the day to avoid the heat. Sand surfing, camel rides, helicopter all available. Else a stroll to the oasis to catch the sunset. Lots of places to rent costumes.

The Mogao Caves, also known as the Mogao Grottoes or Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, is a complex of 492 cave temples featuring Buddhist artwork that spans from the 4th to the 14th centuries. This rock art sanctuary is one of Dunhuang's main attractions and has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Loved the rich history here in Mogao Caves. The entrance ticket includes 2 introductory short video on the Mogao caves which i thought was really good and interesting. And then a tour guide will bring us into 8 caves. There's a special additional caves ticket which you can purchase if you want to see more. But i think that the 8 caves are already quite sufficient. Amazing at how civilized this ancient Chinese were at 2000 years ago!
Joanne L — Google review
Surprisingly not that well known outside of China. It’s hundreds of caves, different sizes built /maintained through to around the 16 century. The tours take you to a number of caves. You walk in the cave then back out in the bright sunlight. Keep yourself protected. Finally, there is an exhibition centre with replica caves for you to get educated and take photos
Philip L — Google review
AMAZING. Mogoa Grottes is a must go A UNESCO heritage site, there are over 500 caves of Buddhist art. The first cave was dug out in 366CE. I marveled at the thought of being in the same space (albeit centuries apart) as the silkroad traders who prayed for their safe passage. Quite humbling. We weren’t allowed to take photos in the caves to preserve them but there were replicas in the museum.
Tan T — Google review
A very interesting and unique place in the middle of the desert to see some ancient Buddhist Chinese art from the times when the Silk road was the main bridge between China and India, the Middle east, or even Europe.
Norbert E — Google review
we were taken and "educated " on these awesome sights. the very knowledgeable tour guide on site was fantastic. the many caves and Buddha's displays were very well persevered ' and they were so huge in size. one is not allowed to do any photography inside the many caves
Chris C — Google review
Very interesting place to visit and be awestruck by the incredible amount of Buddhist art painted inside these manmade caves. Photos or videos not allowed inside the caves. Guides take you thru different caves depending on how much you pay. Everything is fixed and well organized. Definitely worth a visit to see a spectacle not found elsewhere
Kwang W — Google review
My second visit to this site. Yes, it is good enough for me to travel thousands of miles for a 2nd visit. Highly recommend the private tour (tickets sold out easily, so book in advance). The public tour is good enough but you won't be able to really enjoy it with so many visitors. In fact, I probably will try digital and virtual simulation in the future to avoid the crowd. Also, visit the museum, the physical replica caves there allows a much detailed examination.
Ernest T — Google review
Tickets are reserved for foreigners so you don't need to reserve tickets like locals, but I'm not sure how many tickets are reserved per day so come early to avoid disappointment and crowds. Each ticket comes with 2 state of the art videos introducing the Mogao Caves. Followed by a guided tour to 8 caves. The tour guide will randomly select those 8 caves. No photos allowed in the cave to preserve the paintings/mural. Impressive place to visit.

Yumen Pass Scenic Area, located 80 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang County town in the Gobi Desert, was a crucial defensive pass protecting Dunhuang from invasion about two thousand years ago. It was a significant checkpoint for travelers on the Silk Road.
A ruin accumulated thousands years history of clashes of Eastern and Western civilizations, religious, culture and brutal struggles of ordinary people. Once was a strategic gateway that tightly holding the choke point along the Silk Road, experienced its glory, now a place for visitors to observe the rich exhibits, and to gain further understanding of how valuable the peace we enjoy today.

Ancient structures from the Han era forming part of the western great wall, including towers and storage facilities. Great views of the surrounding areas and a museum that tells their story. Truly worth the 1:30 ride from Dunhuang. You can rent english playback equipment for 10 yuan.

The historical sites are amazing and well worth visiting. I found it difficult to get info online about how to visit without booking a tour so here’s how to do it. It is possible to get here using public transit from Dunhuang. As of August 20 2025, a tourist bus departs the Dunhuang bus station at 830am and goes to Yangguan Pass then Yumen Pass. The cost is 120 yuan per person plus your own admission to the scenic areas. The bus stops at each area for about 2 hours so confirm with the driver what time you need to board the bus to leave.

So amazing to stand here and think about all the history this place has supported and witnessed. Good facilities and information in the museum. Well worth the drive out to experience this. I hired a taxi for the day and it was perfect, she patiently showed me around and helped me visit all the places I wanted to, plus recommended a superb dumpling shop we stopped at after and insisted on buying me dumplings.

Mingsha Mountain, also known as "Echoing-sand Mountain," is a popular scenic spot in the area, attracting streams of visitors daily. The mountain got its name from the sound of wind blowing across the dunes. Visitors can enjoy camel rides while taking in the vast and beautiful sand mountain landscape just a few kilometers outside Dunhuang. It's recommended to bring a scarf or hat to protect against sand and sun exposure.
Ming Sashan Sand Dunes It is a square-shaped sand mountain. It looks sparkling with the color of the sky. The more camels walk in a row in the desert. There is a morning sun shining. It is a very impressive image. There is also an oasis called Moon Lake in the middle of the desert. It is a pond that never dries up. Sightseeing can take a Jeep or a camel ride. Very fun.
Phuangthong K — Google review
A beautiful but deceivingly small area to go and experience the desert. Walking across sand dunes can be quite difficult, so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. You'll enjoy the scenery for sure.
F — Google review
This is like an oasis in the desert. There is a crescent shaped lake right in the desert. The sand is very fine and it can find its way into our shoes. This is a tourist spot where tourists can go camel riding or slide down the sand dunes. Riding a camel was a great experience. Tourists are warned not to drop their handphones because they can sink into the sand.
Andrew Y — Google review
At here, you’ll be able to see the oasis town in the desert. 月牙泉 (Yùe yá quán), means the 🌙 spring. It is a natural spring fed by the groundwater. 鳴沙山 (Míng shā shān) is the sand dune protecting the spring next to it. Every night in the midsummer, you’ll be able to hear thousands of people singing and waving their flashlight, which mimics the stars inlaid in the dark blue sky.;) A nice thing to try is that women can decorate themselves as 飛天 (Fēi tiān), the acient fairy described in the Dunhuang fresco. I hope you can enjoy it, and I am so proud to say that I come from this province.
Lihuang D — Google review
You can ride a camel here while enjoying the Sand Mountain. We were going on March , but still feel quite hot. This sand Mountain is huge and beautiful. It’s located only few km out of Dunhuang. It’s worth to visit. Tips: Bring scarf or big hat to cover the face from sand and sun.

Market
Dunhuang Night Market, also known as Shazhou Night Market, is a vibrant and bustling market located in the heart of Dunhuang. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a wide array of local specialties and cultural experiences. As night falls, the market comes to life with colorful lights and enthusiastic crowds eager to explore the diverse offerings. Visitors can expect to find an assortment of souvenirs, handicrafts, clothing, and local delicacies.
The Signboard at the front in Chinese 敦煌夜市(Dunhaung Night Market), it was after 9pm , the place was so crowded, managed to try browse through some of the local & traditional items they are selling at their booths. A local night market selling souvenirs, handicraft, clothes, wood carvings, luminous cups , painting, calligraphy etc. However the stuff they selling are repetitive, thus I noticed some tourists are trying to bargain on their purchases. Plenty of Food Stalls & Restaurants , although some sellers are trying to haggle and hassle tourists to buy their stuff, or go to their restaurants, we walked through this restaurant where the staff are really nice. The Menu on board attracted our attention. It is the stall we had the bbq Goat head. We sat down for it, it tasted really good! Overall the service is good and attentive . They do accept WePay, Alipay and cash . Infact it is a night market with shopping, beers & uncountable food options. A great place to taste their food and experience their culture . Glad that we have been here !!!
Susan C — Google review
I can see the potential - I am sure it’s fantastic on-season. But don’t bother in January! It was mostly shut down and deserted, with only a few stalls and restaurants open and a few lost tourists wandering around. The yangrou chuan (lamb skewers) were delicious - this is the place for fresh lamb. Also had some camel skewers which were not as good as the lamb, but still an experience. Was hoping for some fried sandworms but haven’t found them yet!
Jamie B — Google review
Very clean and happening local night market street. You may find many goods in variety and live band. Easy to find halal food here as well. Overall very good and attentive service. Commonly use WeChat pay or Alipay, cash accepted too. Best to buy souvenirs at back alley rather than those stall in shop or Main Street stalls, usually are higher price than you get at back alley smaller shops.

Dunhuang Airport, located 13 kilometers from the city center, offers convenient connections to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Lanzhou and Urumqi. The airport is praised for its friendly and efficient service despite its small size. While some travelers found the check-in process a bit slow and encountered issues with passport numbers at the machines, they appreciated the helpfulness of the staff. The airport features an excellent Australian coffee shop and direct boarding onto planes.
Friendly and efficient for such a small airport. The check-in machines would not accept US passport numbers but the counter workers were there early. The Australian coffee shop in the terminal was excellent and all the planes boarded directly. I hope I get the chance to fly through here again. The landing strip workers waved before we left.

Dunhuang is a great place! Loved the dunes, but not the airport 🤪. Me and my husband arrived to the airport at about 8:20am. The airport was closed. We couldn’t find any information about the working hours. It was quite cold to sit outside. The door opened at 9:30am. We found seats, but all of the seats were covered with thick layer of dust. Not my favorite airport so far, but hope they will improve in the future. I would blame Covid-19 for that. August 18.2022

If you call a taxi via Didi, the driver will often walk out to pick you up. (Original) 둔황 고속철도역. 내리자마자 사막의 후끈한 열기가 느껴진다. 밖으로 나오면 택시승강장이 있고 디디로 택시를 부르면 기사님이 걸어서 손님을 찾으러 오는 경우가 많다.

Attraction
The Western Thousand Buddha Caves, located approximately 35 kilometers from Dunhuang City along the scenic cliffs of the Danghe River, are a remarkable testament to ancient artistry and culture. Carved during the North Wei Dynasty, these caves predate or were contemporaneous with the more famous Mogao Caves. While some of the sixteen caves remain inaccessible, visitors can still admire their beauty from afar.

Research institute
Dunhuang Academy in China is responsible for safeguarding the renowned Mogao Caves, imposing a daily visitor cap of 6,000 to prevent harm to the delicate site. The academy also houses a remarkable museum featuring artifacts and scrolls related to the caves. Additionally, it hosts moving performances like 'Chinese Opera 2024 Love Dunhuang,' reflecting a deep dedication to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of Dunhuang.
Great museum where you can add to your knowledge about the Mogao caves. Many interesting artefacts and scrolls that managed not to get taken to Europe.
