Terme Taurine or Trajan

Sights & Landmarks
Terme Taurine, also known as Trajan Baths, is an ancient Roman thermal bath site located just north of Civitavecchia. The ruins feature mosaics and massage rooms, offering a glimpse into the bathing practices of the Romans. Nearby, visitors can experience the healing powers of the La Ficoncella Thermal Springs. The area also boasts beautiful beaches like Il Pirgo and Sant'Agostino, easily accessible by taxi or local bus.
Incredible ruins. Lots of room to walk. Some sections are closed off for either renovations or archeological discovery. Not wheelchair friendly. Grass around the area is uncut but easy to walk through. Navigating the actual ruins is easy. Worth the trip! Cheap too! €5 per person. Ample parking. Lots of cats around too that are an added bonus.
Jon M — Google review
I love going places walking, but in this case I DON'T RECOMMEND doing such thing. If you attempt to go walking through Via Terme di Traiano, you'll find yourself at some point (around number 147-145) with no pedestrian way at all, leaving you exposed to the traffic. It's so sad.
Ed D — Google review
It is on the Civitivecchia Hop on Hop off bus route. It was amazing to walk through something so old and imagine it in its heyday. Recommend good walking shoes.
Cindy M — Google review
Our trip to Terme Taurine on 25/03/24 was a journey back in time. These ancient Roman baths, located a short drive from Civitavecchia, are incredibly well-preserved. The entry fee was €8, and we had the place almost to ourselves, with no wait time. The sunny weather made the ruins even more enchanting. We spent about two hours exploring and imagining life in ancient Rome. It’s a hidden gem for history buffs. I can provide more details if you’re interested.
Tareq H — Google review
An interesting place but not easy to get to. We visited in March and caught the 11:10 route B bus from in front of the train station. We were told that the return bus went at 13:10 but it actually left at 12:45 so be aware. We were lucky to get an English guided tour for EUR 8 per person but it is quite possible that there could be no English speaking guides on site. We were the only people there at the time of our visit. Non guided entry is EUR 5.
Bob B — Google review
Interesting thing to do near Civitavecchia. These therms are really old and this is an opportunity to learn more about their history and context. The way we planned it, we first visited these and then went to the ones in Ficoncella, which are still working, and it worked out really well.
Andrea R — Google review
This well preserved archaeological roman site is located on the hills over Civitavecchia, not far from the Ficoncella thermal waters and was originally known as Aquae Taurae. It seems the structure was at some point absorbed in the colossal villa built by emperor Trajanus . Nowadays, the site is open to the public, also with guided tours, and it seldom hosts musical and cultural events, especially during summer

Amazing place full of history. Little bit out of beaten track which therefore even rise it attractivity for visitors.

Water & Amusement Parks
Park
Aquafelix is a popular water park located in Civitavecchia, Italy, just 70 kilometers north of Rome. It's a seasonal attraction open from May to August and offers a variety of slides, pools, and lazy rivers suitable for all ages. The park provides dining options and is ideal for families, friends, and solo travelers seeking fun under the Mediterranean sun.
A great day out for the family. The prices are really reasonable to get in. It is much cheaper to buy your tickets online in advance, however, we could not get the website to accept any of our credit card details (UK banks) so we had to pay on the door. It was €8 more expensive per person to do this. You can hire a locker when you arrive but you must pay for this in cash - €5 for the hire and a €5 deposit. You can pay for food etc inside by card but it is expensive, circa €13 for burger and chips. Take your own food if you can. There are only a small number of water slides (5 for adults in total) but 3 huge pools and a further pool with a lazy river so plenty for the whole family. There is also a smaller pool with small slides for babies/toddlers. There are lots of sun loungers but these get occupied immediately so do t delay when you arrive, find a sun lounger first and then purchase a locker. If you wait, you won’t get a bed. Also, everyone arrives for 10am opening, so if you arrive late, you won’t get a sun lounger either. There is a queue to get in but it goes very quickly. If you don’t have tickets in advance, don’t wait in the queue, go and buy from the cash desk straight away and then queue and save your place (or get someone to queue while you get tickets). Hope this all helps!
Louise E — Google review
Old aquapark with no renovations. I give a star for a nice pool where you can swim a bit or just have fun in a water. Many parts of the park are not functioning. Overall cleanliness is not great. Slides are okay for kids I believe and look a but dangerous. Food was terrible - cold nuggets and cold old fries. They throw you out of water at 17.30. Overall it suits staff and their working hours more than customers. No DJ would be better.
Petr M — Google review
I recently visited Aquafelix Aquapark in Civitavecchia, and overall, I found it quite disappointing. The park feels very dated and could definitely use some renovation. Another major downside is the lack of shaded areas – on a hot summer day, this makes it really uncomfortable. The waiting times are also frustrating. For some of the slides, you have to stand in line for 20–30 minutes just to get a ring, which takes away a lot of the fun. As for the wave pool, the waves only start every two hours, which feels like too long of a wait considering it’s one of the main attractions. In short, the park has potential but really needs improvements in terms of facilities, organization, and guest comfort.
Saxplayer 5 — Google review
We had a great day out at Aquafelix waterpark. Ticket prices were really affordable so we went with very low expectations. However the slides were fun, a big main pool with life entertainment and sufficient chairs around all areas. 2 elements of criticism were: 1) food quality was really poor and I suspect the burgers were pre-made and simply heated in a microwave. 2) all waiting areas for the slides have zero sun protection which is terrible
Johan U — Google review
I gave 4 stars because when it comes to enjoyment, my children really enjoyed it. but from a structural point of view, it's old, there are bars that are abandoned, but it's sad if they don't renovate. I hope the owner will consider renovating it and it has great potential.
Roma G — Google review
It's my first time at this water park and I must say am a bit disappointed. Facility maintenance is next to 0. The first impression they give you at the entrance could use a little smile and warmth. They could've used the half hour everyone was just sitting around the front gate to sweep the rough pebbles in and out the pool where kids will be running barefoot. The umbrellas and their concrete stands are a bit aged and cracked. The plastic loungers are either broken or unwashed. The food prices are a bit steep. bathrooms are..... Well, the smell will leave you teary eyed and as for the pools themselves, some tiles will do them wonders. All in all, could've been a magical place for a quick dip if given a little bit of TLC.

Fontana del Vanvitelli is a must-see attraction in Civitavecchia, dating back to the mid-1700s. Commissioned by Pope Benedict XIV and crafted from travertine stone, this monumental fountain features a striking sculpture of an old faun. The faun's head is framed in an ornate niche with water flowing from its mouth into the basin below. This well-preserved landmark offers visitors a glimpse into ancient Roman mythology and architectural grandeur.
Located near the port of Civitavecchia, Vanvitelli 's sculpture represents the head of an old faun. It's a great artistic landmark dated back 1630.

Civitavecchia Port is a charming coastal town in Italy, serving as the gateway to Rome and attracting cruise ships and tourists. The town boasts a rich historical heritage with notable sights like the 16th-century fortress Forte Michelangelo, offering panoramic views of the town and the Tyrrhenian Sea. For those with a day to spare, there are various tours to Rome lasting between seven and nine hours, some with fixed itineraries while others offer customizable schedules for small groups.
Getting off the train, on tge staircase there was a left set of steps,I took those steps and was on the correct side to have a bus to take me to the Rome pier. 6 Euros, in a,short ride I arrived at the pier .it was effortless. Thanks for allowing me to share for information to other travelers.

Civitavecchia - Port of Rome. Sea gate of the capital of Italy. It's not a huge but very important transportation link. Generally, for ferry, passenger ships, less ro-ro, container, and general cargo ships.
Vladimir W — Google review
No directions on how to check in, Grimaldi lines staff not helpful, the boat to Barcelona was not clean, I didn't see anyone using a vacuum cleaner table tops were sometimes wiped. The standard breakfast with the tickets one coffee one croissant, everything else extra. Cheep but not very cheerful.
Neil O — Google review
I visited Civitavecchia via cruise ship years ago during a port stop on the way to Rome. However, this trip I was departing and decided to stay in Civitavecchia. It is a lovely waterfront town only one hour by train to Rome (4.60 euros each way) with personable service at the hotels and bed and breakfasts locally. I spent 2 days wandering the city and it was delightful. I much prefer the pace here opposed to the hustle and bustle of Rome.
Angie B — Google review
No clear directions anywhere. We got in from Rome to get on a cruise ship. There was no signage from the train station to the port. When we were leaving the cruise ship, the port was super inefficient. There was only one exit for the 5000 passengers. The port staff tried to direct people, but failed miserably. Also rude and not helpful. It held up the line massively.
M C — Google review
The new terminal is the best, with state of the art facilities, fast public wifi and Air conditioning.
Mesh E — Google review
This is mostly a commercial port where many of the Mediterranean cruises leave from. It’s easily accessible by train. The port authority offers a shuttle service from the train station to the port which makes it very convenient. You can buy the bus ticket together with the train tickets at the machines or pay directly on the bus.

History Museums
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Civitavecchia, also known as the City Museum, is a small yet captivating attraction that history enthusiasts should not miss. Housed in the 18th-century Clemente XIII palace, this museum showcases a variety of archaeological artifacts from Civitavecchia's rich history. The exhibits are well-organized across two floors and include ceramic bowls, sculptures, and centuries-old artworks with informative signage in both Italian and English.
It’s a small museum but everything displayed is interesting nevertheless. Recommended if you have some time to spare.
Mariel R — Google review
I don't know what the people that say this is good are on. It's a few broken bits of roman pots and statues stuck together with clay in most places. It's very small, took me 20 mins to look round it and read absolutely everything slowly. Friendly staff and everything is translated to English which are the only plus points. Probably doesn't help that I recently went to Naples museum. It also had a toilet!
Melissa B — Google review
I found this museum very interesting, most of the displays had a English translation, what I didn't like was the surly staff in the ticket office, where would they be without their overseas visitors, it was spread over 2 floors, there was absolutely nowhere to sit, i've noticed this before in Italy 🇮🇹 in railway stations particularly. It was a very hot day to make things worse...
Wlt648 — Google review
Small but plenty to read and attain the history of the area. We thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits. A good feel about it.

The small museum contained in the Clemente XIII palace , collects the most important statuary discovery in the archaeological excavations in this part of Taurine Bath, La Mattonara Necropolis, Punta del Pecoraro and others archeological excavations was an important work experience of Centumcellae Association, the most remarkable works can be seen immediately in the first room, ground floor: -sarcophagus of an urban factory with a clypeus image of the defined supported by vitorie and hunting posts of the II-III Century AD, -the wonderful statue of Apollo (I century), Apollo delivered people from epidemics, yet he is also a god who could bring ill-health and deadly plague with his arrows. As the god of Mousike (art of Muses), Apollo presides over all music, songs, dance and poetry. He is the inventor of string-music, and the frequent companion of the Muses, functioning as their chorus leader in celebrations. The lyre is a common attribute of Apollo. -Athena Parthenos of Phidia, There have been many replicas and works inspired by the statue, in both ancient and modern times. Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom. A Statue also exhibited in the Louvre Museum. Among the local guides Andrea Romanet did an excellent job on cataloging all the finds. A different visit of the city in a short time you can admire the olms of the Ancient Port of Rome and finds found in the surrounding areas of Civitavecchia. For people in ♿️ ask the staff inside and they will let you in through the suitable entrance. The museum is equipped with 🚾 and an elevator to go up to the second floor.

In the afternoon, we strolled through the Ghetto di Civitavecchia, a historic neighborhood with narrow streets and charming buildings. The area was rich in history and culture, with several small shops and cafés. The weather remained pleasant, making it ideal for walking. There were no entry fees, and we spent a leisurely couple of hours exploring and enjoying the local ambiance. This neighborhood is perfect for those who appreciate local culture and history.

Beautiful Italian port. The transportation takes a little getting used to if you watch a few YouTube videos it makes a lot easier.

The cab drivers are extorting people getting off the cruise ships. It’s a max of $150 euros to go to Rome and they made everyone wait until they could stuff a van full of 8 people and charged $85 a piece. They even stopped to make us take out cash. Unbelievable and there is no other way out of there if you don’t have a car booked. It’s illegal I found out so someone needs to call the cops on these thieves. Horrible intro to Rome!!!
Christy R — Google review
Use the cabs not the shuttles! They’re the same price and much smoother. Both ways. My gosh it’s chaos if there’s more than one ship in port and you will not be able to catch the shuttle at night. Even if you don’t trust me and use the shuttle to get to the train station don’t plan on it on your way back. Just walk down the street from the train terminal and hail a cab. It’s 6€ per person for the cabs and the same for the shuttle and you won’t get Great Whited (firefighter joke).
Brandon-Dean M — Google review
Came here for a Royal Caribbean cruise. It was a very easy port to navigate and board the ship. Just be aware that it does cost extra for the driver to get all the way to your ship, unless you plan to walk!

The fort's construction began under Bramante and was continued by his pupils. Not a tourist spot, you cant go in. Ironically, they said it was used to protect the area from pirates, but I've never seen a town with more scammer in my life. Avoid buying anything in this town and always ask the prices. They like to scam tourists by not posting prices and this charging outrageous amounts.

This is truly a gem of the town; everyone heading to the sea passes by and sees this beautiful architectural ensemble.
Iryna S — Google review
Commissioned by Pope Julius II in the 14th century and completed in 1535 to help defend the city from pirates. Michelangelo Buonarroti built the fort and it was named after him. There is a nice pedestrian promenade along the sea which leads to the port. Just be careful crossing over to the port from the walking area, I thought I was in a marked off area for walking and stopped to take a picture only to have a cruise shuttle bus madly honking at me since the marked off area was also an area cars/buses drive in. The fort was not open for tours or to walk around when I was there. From the website, it says that only the inner square of the fort is open on weekends from 10 am - 1 pm and 2 - 5 pm for free. The fort was in good shape from the outside and just have it is a plaza with a few restaurants. Nearby the fort are two kissing statues, "Embracing Peace" and "Kissing in Memory of a Port."

Cattedrale di S. Francesco d’Assisi, the largest church in Civitavecchia, is a neoclassical-style cathedral dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. Originally built in 1610 and reconstructed after World War II, it features a statue of the saint on its top floor. The interior showcases beautiful paintings depicting biblical scenes and intricate decorative elements adorning the walls and ceilings.
The main cathedral of the city is worth a visit—be sure to stop by and take a look. Of course, after seeing Rome, it may not be as impressive, but it’s still worth your attention for the experience.

This is the second Cathedral in Cadiz as the first was destroyed. The price for this ticket €9 for the visit was included in the City Sightseeing Hop on hop off bus ticket and was good value for money. The cathedral has many treasures including a very ornately carved choir stalls from the Charterhouse of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, and the Custodia del Cogolla encassed in silver. On the day that we visited, the stalls for Pope Francis' funeral were laid out in front of the cathedral, for mourners and faithful to stand and be seated. The Cathedral museum is adjacent to the cathedral itself and is regularly open.

The pizza here is massive and delicious! 🤤 very reasonable price too and friendly service. We don’t speak Italian, so I think there was some confusion about what we ordered. Ended up with a large pizza of four types. All were excellent, especially the anchovies pizza. 🍕

My family and I was anxious to eat at this popular pizzeria in Civitavecchia, when we first arrived, the place was full inside and outside soon enough, we got a table we were a group of seven people. The waitress took our order at 8:45 within a few minutes we got our drinks however, the pizza only got there at 10:15. The staff is nonchalant and heaven forbid if you ask for anything. the pizza comes on the big square sheet of wax paper. There is no cutlery and your plate becomes another piece of paper. Everything has to be eaten with your hands not the most hygienic, we ordered three of the four specialties of the house. The pizza we had was good however waiting for over 1hr was disappointing.

Family visit to Rome after niece's wedding We took a morning train to Civitavecchia from Rome. Very beautiful and a peaceful city. Since I am vegetarian and we were looking for a place to have lunch which serves vegetarian. Found this place by accident. We were very impressed by the owner, since he is an allrounder we use this term in Cricket in India. One who bowls bats and fields is known as allrounder. At this place the owner makes pizza, serves, cleans and collects the money at the cash counter. The pizza was very good and tasty. There was only one option for the vegetarian that is Margarita pizza. Requested the owner for some paprika and it was really hot and we wanted know what is it called, unfortunately he didn’t know and said it is home grown doesn’t know the name. Over all excellent experience and would strongly recommend this place.

The unique use of a bolt to hold the silver off the table made a great first impression. Then the menu... First two amuse-bouse arrived. I chose the Sea Egg and Pork Belly (my favorite). The flavors were incredible. The presentation fantastic! Definitely a winner!

Michelin star place indeed! This place is very cosy and clean! Please make sure you check the Menü before booking. This place has some iconic plates for fish and seafood lovers. Less for meat lovers. The chef was very nice to make some pasta Bolognese for our children, since "we" did not check out the Menü before booking for 14 people.

An amazing experience. Such a cozy and beautiful restaurant. Outstanding service and food! I’m a vegan and the chef created delicious and very particular plates for me. The rest of the people on my party (non vegan) were completely satisfied with their dishes. all of us recommend this place if you come by Civitacvecchia.

I was impressed by the carefully crafted dishes served here. The meats were especially outstanding in that the temperature and crust were absolutely perfect. I've had meat dishes less good than this in 2-star-restaurants! Sauces, presentation, flavors were fantastic. Not under- or overseasoned, just perfectly mastered by someone who really knows how to create outstanding dishes. No doubt a lot of dedication goes into this level of cuisine. The issues I found at Forma have nothing to do with the kitchen and the chef's talent, they have to do with the wine selection and service. The wine list lacks diversity, be it in grape varieties or geographical origin (although this latter point might be debatable), but the main concern is availability: roughly a third of the wines in the list are marked "ND", non disponibile, unavailable. This is indicated in pencil, quite difficult to see in the low-light dinner setting, resulting in several disappointments ("Let's try this one" followed by "Oh, they don't have that wine anymore, either"). Service was minimal: no smiles, no ice bucket for the wine (which got too warm by the time we got the main dish). Wait times for the 3 courses we ordered were surprisingly low. I suspect this kitchen is well organized as well. Get the service right, revamp the wine list and you can have a Michelin star. That's how good the food is!

The amuse-bouche were good, the anchovy on butter bread outstanding, as was the olive oil dip and the home made bread. The Sea Bass in the pasta dish was over cooked, nearly burnt, and while this may have been the chefs intention it did not work in the dish. The Turbot, a very small piece(€24), was over worked with a rich over-powering sauce. For €49, including water (no wine), the meal was disappointing and over priced for what it was. I think this restaurant may only cater to tourists.

Located in Civitavecchia, the King Edward GastroPub offers a unique dining experience inspired by English pubs rather than traditional Italian cuisine. Despite this, it is highly regarded for its classic English pub dishes such as steaks, burgers, sandwiches, and fries. The pub has been serving casual fare for nearly two decades and offers a variety of international and local beers as well as wines.
All we have to say is wow! The food is phenomenal. All the pasta dishes were great. However, the pennette alla guinness was my favorite. The pizza capricciosa was also awesome. They are stocked with a good variety of beer and they also have spritz for us ladies! We are bery happy we found this place for our big family to have a delightful delicious comfortable dinner.

Fun, family run pub with good food. Easily seated a large party while we were eating, even though the place is not large. Felt quite at home though our Italian is very weak.

First time in Italy and this restaurant was a really great experience for authentic Italian food. Bruschetta was tasty and fresh, prosciutto and mushroom pizza was really great best pizza I have had. Pasta carbonara was delicious. Service was great. Friendly waitress who even though her English wasn't perfect she did her best to communicate with us and make sure our order was correct and that we had a great dining experience. Highly recommend eating here if your staying in the area. It was a short 9 min walk from the belsole B&B

La Bomboniera is a family-run restaurant that specializes in Sardinian-influenced seafood, featuring local produce such as anchovies and lobster. One of their house specialties is the crispy thin Sardinian bread 'pane carasau', also known as 'carta di musica'. The restaurant offers a leisurely dining experience with delicious dishes like mussels, grilled prawns, langostines, fish dishes, seafood risotto with tomato, and seafood gnocchi.
We recently enjoyed a memorable dinner with a small group at La Bomboniera. The food and service were top notch and the atmosphere was so welcoming! We really appreciated the little extras like the wood fired crackers before dinner and the sweets at the end of the meal. The sea bass was prepared perfectly and the price was so reasonable. The wood fire roasted prawns, and the panna cotta and crème Brûlée with berries were also perfect! We were referred to their restaurant from another restaurant (where dined the day before) and we appreciated it so much. Great way to kick off our Windstar cruise!

Our meal was amazing. We started with a delicious thin crispy wafer topped with olive oil and sea salt, cooked over a wood fire. Then absolutely delicious mussels with bread to sop up the broth, grilled prawns and langostines, and two other fish dishes. All of us cleaned our plates! Dessert was creamy panne cotta with chocolate sauce and creme brulee with a delicious berry compote. They also brought the table and assortment of cookies and after dinner liqueurs that are a specialty of Sardinia (where the owners are from). Every bite of food was amazing. The restaurant is family owned and run, with great attention to detail. Their wine suggestions were perfect with the meal. Definitely recommend you try this restaurant when in town.

Nestled just a short stroll from the bustling port of Civitavecchia, Chalet del Pincio Da Gabriele is a delightful haven for dessert lovers. This charming spot specializes in crafting exquisite house-made gelato that caters to every palate, ensuring there's something sweet for everyone. In addition to their creamy ice cream, visitors can indulge in delectable Maritozzo—an irresistible sweet bread filled with whipped cream—as well as an array of tarts and cakes that are sure to satisfy any craving.
Hands down the best gelateria in Civitavecchia, and definitely the oldest. You'll see on their wall the history of their gelateria, starting from humble cart to right now success, they deserve every ounce of it. Their gelato is just so creamy, luscious and flavorful, especially their pistachio gelato and I've had many good ones and this impresses me. Despite not speaking english most of them understand and also they charge us the same price not like the one downtown that charges us double just because we're tourist. Their pastries are amazing too, their maritozzi is so good! Well actually their fresh whipped cream is soo good you have to have it in you gelato, if they ask if u want crema? Say yes immediately. They're a bit of a walk from shuttle stop but it is worthed I promise.

Hands down some of the best gelato we've ever had. We were in Rome sightseeing on a very hot day. We quit early and asked our driver to stop for gelato on the way back to our cruise ship. He chose this place. I had the dark chocolate, pistachio and straciatella on a cone. They put a little cone on top, and some fresh whipped cream right next to it. Highly recommended!

Chalet del Pincio is a traditional spot in Civitavecchia. We enjoyed a senza glutine cornetto and an excellent coffee. This is exactly what I expected of an Italian restaurant. We went here because of the many gluten free options for my wife and it didn’t disappoint. The food was delicious and the house red wine was excellent.

We arrived to Civitavecchia after a long day of travel by trains. We showed up right at 7PM when the restaurant opens for dinner. We like to have dinner early and during our meal, we were the only ones at the restaurant. The service was great (our server spoke almost no English and we speak 0.01 Italian, thus Google Translate came to our rescue). Our server brought out Fried Oysters as the complementary amuse bouche. Our dinner was exquisite: my wife ordered the Seafood Ravioli and a side of Sauteed Spinach, I ordered the small Shelled Fish Soup and a side of Grilled Vegetables. The ravioli and soup were WONDERFUL! After I finished the soup, both of my hands had the broth dripping on. I am glad to find this quaint restaurant for our first night here. If you are visiting Civitavecchia, pay this place a visit.

A very romantic place where to go for special dinner if you want to celebrate something and also to eat good seafood, fresh and well cooked. This restaurant is located in the historical center of the city, a very pretty area for walking. We had starter with many different kinds of seafood like octopus, squid, prawn, scampi, anchovy, mussel... cooked in different style, then seafood ravioli (type of dumpling composed of a filling sealed between two layers of thin pasta dough) and seafood spaghetti in foil, all very well-made. The house white wine was excellent and the price charged was very reasonable. Fantastic night, great food and good service.

(Translated by Google) It is clear that the establishment is run by a family, they are very nice and friendly, there may be a problem with English, but this is a minor thing since this is the most delicious pizza I have eaten. I was in Rome for a week and every day I went to different places, it was expensive, cheap, tasty and not very good somewhere - tipping was mandatory. When you enter the establishment, it doesn’t look like it’s a tourist attraction. The pizza itself is very huge and cheap, the dough is thin, and there are a lot of toppings. Very cozy, I recommend it. The pizza in the photo costs 11.50 euros, it was called four something (Original)

Despite its touristy appearance, the restaurant surprises visitors with its amazing views over the port and old sea fort, creating a pleasant atmosphere with linen-set tables.
Sora Maria was recommended by a local guide on the hop on hop off bus. My partner had pasta with parmigiana. She said it was delicious. I had the seafood salad with clams, mussels, squid and prawns it was warm in an olive oil sauce. We each had a glass of Sauvignon. I had an espresso. Total bill 44€

We had a lovely experience at Sora Maria. Just a heads-up: although it says they close at 4 PM, the kitchen actually shuts down around 3 PM, and they’re usually closed in the evenings during the winter months. We visited in October and were lucky to sit outside in the sun — it was beautiful and very relaxing. For starters, we had fresh oysters — very good quality — and a green salad, which was also fresh and well-balanced. As mains, we tried the spaghetti alle vongole, which was excellent, and the tonnarelli with seafood, which was a bit on the oily side but still tasty and satisfying. We ended the meal with a classic Italian tiramisu and an espresso, both of which reminded us why we love Italian cuisine so much. Most importantly, our server Miguel was outstanding — friendly, professional, and very attentive.

Airport
Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, also known as Rome's main international airport, is a significant gateway for travelers arriving in the capital city. It is conveniently located less than an hour from the center of Rome and offers a 30-minute express train to Termini Station. The airport provides a well-organized and modern environment with ample seating, clean facilities, and various amenities such as free-to-play piano and a large chess board.
This is a huge airport with three terminals. Despite being a big airport it's very well maintained. We even boarded a train to go to our terminal. The airport lounge is also huge with a good buffet. There are free play areas to keep the kids entertained like the huge chessboard. There are enough number of signs to direct people to their destination. The elevators are big and move quickly, they didn't get crowded even when people traveled up and down with luggage.

Located around 31 km southwest of Rome's city center, which takes about 40 minutes by vehicle, depending on traffic, and serving tens of millions of passengers a year, Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, also known as Fiumicino (FCO), is the busiest airport in Italy, where my partner, our friends, family member, and I departed as first-timers and ended our memorable trip to Italy in September. We arrived at our modern terminal, being part airport and part luxury shopping center. It was like a small city with a huge variety of shops, cafes, and amenities to explore. Despite its size and the crowds, it was exceptionally well-maintained. The signage and systems were clear and easy to follow. The facilities were clean and neat, and the staff seemed to manage the high passenger volume very efficiently. Great overall experience!

Second time to this Airport and loved the ease of finding our way around. Ensure you give yourself ample time as this airport was extremely BUSY during our visit, as there was some construction, and they were celebrating 2025 Jubileum, or Holy Year, a significant Catholic event marking the 2,025th anniversary of Jesus Christ's Incarnation. Several decent food spots and gift stores. Try and have Euro funds on hand before getting to Airport as it is more costly to change out there. Great no-touch bathroom faucets and amenities. Barcode scans available from large teleprompter monitor to your phone for easy and up to date flight and gate info.
Wayne A — Google review
Overall, Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is a clean, modern airport with efficient security, helpful Staff, and Lounge access (was able to use Priority Pass via American Express). Construction made navigation a bit tricky, but traveling through FCO was mostly convenient and comfortable; especially having checked in online and packing light! 🧳 Note: Checking in online or via a designated app ahead of time prepares your boarding pass on your phone in most cases. If you’re traveling light with just a carry-on, this lets you head straight to security without waiting in line at the gate unless otherwise notified! ✅ For context, my husband and I flew into Rome to start our trip touring southern Italy. We stayed a few nights in Rome, then took a train to Naples, followed by a ferry to Sorrento, and finally picked up a rental car to drive back and fly out of Rome. Coming from Frankfurt, while living abroad in Germany, this round-trip plan via Fiumicino was the most convenient and cost-effective option for our itinerary 💳 When we arrived, although we didn’t need to check a bag, our airline offered to check our carry-ons for free to save space in the cabin. We agreed to this because we didn’t mind waiting for them at baggage claim! Our main plan was simply to check into our hotel and grab a late-night bite once we arrived, and that’s exactly what we did 😋 Basically, we knew we would arrive in the evening and had planned to take a train into the city by booking it on the spot. Note: This option is much cheaper than a taxi or Uber and just as quick. Tickets don’t need to be purchased in advance, as trains run frequently and last-minute fares aren’t too expensive. I recommend this approach because you never know if your flight will be delayed ✈️ Before catching our flight home, it was super simple to drop off our rental car 🚗 The walk from the rental return area to the main terminal was short and easy, with moving walkways making it smooth to move luggage. Security was quick and efficient, and check-in was simple. Inside, there are plenty of shops and cafés, though we had lounge access through Priority Pass, which was a great way to relax before our flight 😌 I have to mention that I also appreciated the help systems at FCO! For example, you could scan a QR code to chat via WhatsApp with airport support, which was very convenient. That said, the information didn’t fully reflect the current construction layout, so directions weren’t always perfectly accurate. Still, we were able to navigate to our gate without any issues 🧭 All in all, a positive experience 👍 Fiumicino is a clean, modern airport that will likely be even better once the construction wraps up! It offers Lounges (depending on traveler access), nice shops, and plenty of places to grab a bite or a drink before your flight 🛫

Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) - Terminal 1: Modernity Achieved 🙌 Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars After years of development, Rome Fiumicino’s Terminal 1 has finally emerged as a world-class gateway that truly reflects the excellence of modern Italian design and efficiency. It is a phenomenal improvement. A Modern Architectural Gem: It took some years of renovation works, but the effort has paid off handsomely. The new areas of Terminal 1 now look very modern, with bright, open spaces, high ceilings, and beautiful contemporary architectural touches. It is a vast improvement and a pleasure to navigate, feeling airy and sleek. Security is Lightning Fast: The security experience is genuinely revolutionary. Thanks to the rollout of advanced CT-scanning machines, security screening for Schengen/domestic flights literally took me 2 minutes. Since these modern screening machines do not require passengers to take out liquids, laptops, or electronics from their hand luggage, the throughput is incredibly fast and stress-free. This alone is a massive win for the passenger experience. World-Class Retail and Dining: The shopping and food experience is phenomenal, with a vast choice of almost everything you could want. You can find high-end luxury Italian boutiques alongside authentic Italian food markets and a huge range of restaurants, from gourmet sit-down options to quick, quality fast food. You can grab a final perfect Roman coffee or indulge in some high-quality retail therapy: it is the perfect way to spend your pre-flight time. Overall, Terminal 1 at Fiumicino has shed its old reputation and embraced the future. It is modern, incredibly efficient, and packed with amenities.

A World-Class Airport, But Come Prepared with Cash! My recent transit through Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) was a surprisingly pleasant experience, albeit with one major financial lesson learned. This airport is massive and impressive. We had a 4-hour layover for a connecting flight to Venice and were worried about boredom, but there was no need. The airport is like a small city with a huge variety of shops, cafes, and amenities to explore. Despite its size and the crowds, it is exceptionally well-maintained. The facilities were clean and neat, and the staff seemed to manage the high passenger volume very efficiently. A CRUCIAL Tip for International Travelers: Bring Euros with you from home! Do not assume you can get a good exchange rate at the airport. I made the mistake of changing money there and was shocked by the cost. The exchange charges are exorbitant, ranging from 35% to 40%. To make it worse, every currency exchange counter seems to have a different rate, making it confusing and unfair. While card payments are widely accepted, not all taxis or smaller shops have card facilities, so having some cash on hand is essential. A fantastic, modern airport for a layover, but ensure you have local currency already in your pocket to avoid being caught out by predatory exchange rates.

This airport is modern and easy to navigate. Everything felt clean — especially the restrooms and the main waiting areas — which made the whole experience much more comfortable. There are plenty of spots to grab food, coffee, or a quick drink while waiting for your flight. One of the best parts is the direct train connection to Roma Termini. The ticket costs around €14 and you can buy it right at the station inside the airport. No need to validate anything before boarding — just get on the train and take the first available seat since there are no assigned seats. Super simple and convenient for anyone arriving in Rome for the first time. Overall, a smooth and traveler-friendly airport with great transportation options into the city.

Giovan Battista Pastine International Airport

International airport
Giovan Battista Pastine International Airport, also known as Ciampino Airport, is one of Rome's two main airports. It is a smaller airport located about 12km from the city center. Despite its size, it offers convenient transportation options such as buses, trains, and taxis to reach the heart of Rome. The airport features a variety of shops and boutiques where travelers can purchase souvenirs and Italian products.
I have been to Rome, Italy twice now from our home in Manchester, England both times flying in amd out of Rome, Ciampino Airport aka Giovan Battista International Airport. First time was November 2022 and latest was October 2025, My First visit was a fantastic experience as the Airport is small and we landed and were through Customs in no time and inside the terminal you can book a coach into the centre, Car rental or official taxis outside the exit to the right there is a set fare of €48 from The airport to the centre of Rome/Surrounding areas of Rome. Airport is spotlessly clean, plenty of staff on hand, Very efficient, Fast through Customs and before we knew it we were in a a taxi to our hotel the Occidental Aran Park. Outbound 2022 we got a taxi back to the Airport again this was a set fare of €48, We had checked in online and headed straight through Security(We always recommend Fast Track Security), Again we breezed through Security and Customs and before we knew it we were in the departure lounge where there is a Mcdonalds, Duty Free store, Sandwich shops that serve salads, Beer, Wine, Soft drink, Sandwiches etc. Inbound October 2025 again we flew into Ciampino Airport and again super easy to navigate Customs and again before we knew it within minutes we were at the Official Taxi rank and again it was €48 to the centre of Rome(You can pay cash or card but most prefer cash) to our Airbnb in Monteverde. Outbound we checked out of our Airbnb and booked a taxi through ITTAXI APP(Its the official taxi app for Italy) again it came to €48 but the driver wanted cash i only had €40 so he took the cash, Again we had checked in online and we had Fast track through Security again within minutes we had cleared Security and we were in the departure lounge(There are only 2, A and B) again you there is a duty free shop, Mcdonalds, Sandwich shops etc and when you get through to departure lounge A or B there is ample seating along with USB and USB C charging points along with european plug sockets to charge laptops, Phones, Tablets, smart watches etc. Again plenty of staff on hand, Airport is spotlessly clean, Very efficient and easy to navigate, If you are flying out from Departure lounge B just know there are no toilets once you pass through the E-Gate and you only have vending machines for snacks, hot and cold drinks etc. Again departure was super smooth, Polite and friendly staff only issue was a 2 hour delay due to Frencg Air Traffic Control strikes(As we had to pass over France) but it happens. 5☆

It is easy to use the Ciampino Airlink service to get in and out to Roma Termini. It is very affordable. Taxi costs around €30. The airport is not too big, so the traffic isn’t bad. It didn’t take long for us to get through security check and immigration. Also the Ryanair check in didn’t take long. The toilets are very clean here and very tap provides tap water. There are McDonald’s, different deli shops here. They are def more expensive than in the city. There are quite some ATMs/cash points around. One is from Unicredit group so I don’t think it will charge ATM fees like EURONET. The immigration officials are very nice, especially the one from the UK. It would be even better if they could provide some child facilities.

For those still unsure if it’s possible to spend the night (August 2025): From like 10/11 pm the DEPARTURES are CLOSED, you can wait in the ARRIVALS. Someone will come and check your boarding passes. However at 3am you HAVE TO move to the departures hall, at 4am the security checks begin and then you can go through and have access to cafés with drinks and foods. There is nowhere to sleep but on the floor basically, and there is bright light all night. So we stayed up all night but then I wasn’t feeling all that great during our flight so I wouldn’t really recommend it. But it’s doable. Otherwise I think the airport is fine, I had no problems.

My recent experience at Giovan Battista Pastine International Airport offered a truly unique start to my Roman adventure! While my flight schedule had an unforeseen adjustment, I found it an opportunity to embrace the local atmosphere. The boarding process was certainly memorable: a proactive transition to a spacious, sun-drenched 'greenhouse' area, where one can truly bask in the Roman warmth at 36 degrees. A highly immersive waiting experience, quite distinct from typical airport lounges! The airport staff, though efficient, maintained a wonderfully discreet presence, adding to the streamlined flow. It's clear that while the airport provides the infrastructure, flight operations are the airline's domain. For any specific queries, their helpful team directs you to the airline or their online suggestions form. If you appreciate a robust, distinctly Roman start to your journey, embracing both the sun and efficient, if unconventional, processes, this airport provides a memorable send-off!

So this is just for Ryannair? Then perfect! Not busy at all, easy to get through. Walked right out for our taxi within Aurelian walls. Departing: two of our party did have to get pulled aside for swipes but not like other major airports. There was the usual duty free shops. There were counters for Lavazzo coffee, pizza, and salads, reasonably priced for an airport; their auto-screens did not appear to work well, so you would have to stand in queue. There was a kiosk for McDonalds, not counter service; they delivered from another location. There are toilets before passport control but there are also others past. For our gate B1, it was on a lower level floor. The gate areas was very crowded, and there were only a couple of people in the lounge around the corner. We did have to take bus in and out for our plane.

Small airport with few gates and few shops, mainly for low cost flights. Reachable from/to citi center by taxi (fixed/ regulated rate 40eur) or by public transport.
Robert Z — Google review
One of the worst low-cost airports. This airport is not connected reliably by public transport. The buses from the nearby train station are a lottery. Use regular buses from metro stations only! Arrival to this airport is acceptable. Departure from this airport is not recommended at all. Also, the facilities are nonexistent. There are barely any toilets and no tap water.
