Tsarevets Fortress

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Tsarevets Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking Veliko Tarnovo, is a renowned medieval stronghold that offers a glimpse into Bulgaria's rich history. Dating back to the 12th century, it served as the primary fortress of the Second Bulgarian Empire and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's destiny. The fortress boasts robust stone walls that once witnessed medieval power struggles and is surrounded by historical treasures such as Orthodox temples and residential houses.
Absolutely perfect! Must go! I visited it on Saturday and it was great! Medieval walls, buildings and towers are not the only thing there. Great views, a little exercise and lots of fun activities like archery and coinmaking. There isnt much food except the ice-cream stand so I recommend bringing your own snacks but still very fun. If you are looking for a lazy walk with great views or a fun hike this is the place for you!
Андрей Д — Google review
Absolutely magnificent fortress accessible to public. Great light decor at evenings. Well maintained ruins and explanations. Many souvenir shops all around.
Alexander P — Google review
It is very beautiful to find yourself in such a place full of history, it really makes you feel special being able to walk through it and imagine all the things that have been taking place ever since it was built. The entrance is 15 leva which you can pay by card/cash at the entrance. Beware it is a long distance to walk and mostly uphill. The view is breathtaking so it's worth it. Talking about the interior, it felt kitschy and totally not in harmony with the outside and with the idea of a thousand year old fortress. It was too modern and somehow in my head it didn't add up. But beside that, the surroundings are magnificent.
Queen R — Google review
Very nice place for a walk. Not recommended to visit on torrid days in the summer time. You need at least 2 hours to visit. I didn't find a map and a written guide at ticket store or gift store. Toilet inside is cash only 1 Lev. Everything must be paid with cash in Bulgarian currency leva. You can pay with card just the tickets at the main entrance.
Marius F — Google review
Amazing place with incredible views and so much history. The walk up is a bit steep, but totally worth it once you reach the top. The ruins are well preserved and the light show in the evening is awesome. Definitely a must-see if you visit Veliko Tarnovo!
Iamandi R — Google review
The fortress is well kept and some parts are renovated very well. It takes you to the time when Bulgarian was under Ottoman occupation and how they lived before that. Really nice for a walk and the church is really nice inside.
Miroslava K — Google review
Number one tip is to arrive when it opens before the crowds. Number two tip you must wear supportive shoes. Stay hydrated. Commanding views of the city and plenty of history to absorb. Should be included on any trip to the city.
C C — Google review
Riveting experience exploring the old Bulgarian fortress monument. The area was not very crowded at around 13:00pm when my crew was there. The grounds are well preserved as well as clean. There is plenty to see with the Church at the summit and the meandering walls around the hill overlooking the city and yantra river. Free parking can be found by the yantra beach/ bridge, and from there a short walk or bus ride up to the site.

Holy Forty Martyrs Church

Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
The Holy Forty Martyrs Church is a significant historical and cultural site in Bulgaria, known for housing the relics of Tsar Kaloyan. Situated near the Tsarevets fortress, this Orthodox church was originally constructed in 1230 and later restored during Ottoman rule in the early 18th century. The church boasts a fantastic interior, interesting history, and pleasant gardens, making it a beautiful place to visit.
A lovely calm place that is worth a quick visit. Great atmosphere, with parts of the wall intact from ancient times. The lady at the ticket desk was very nice. The entire area is incredible. Various churches and the two bridges. The river and the greens. You can then make your way up to to the Trapenitza fortress.
Kapil G — Google review
A church with long history and significance, renovated nicely on the outside but looking bland and cold on the inside. A little overpriced for what it offers. Beautiful views from the outside.
Diana S — Google review
Beautiful culturally significant church. The artefacts are fascinating. The preservation is not good but overall they did their best. The disappointing part were historically INACURATE gravestones of royal figures. These stones have symbolic meaning but they are far away from the reality.
Mirian M — Google review
Entrance is right after the bridge, and then under it. 2022 it's 6BGN per adult. Very kind people there. The Church is a historical landmark with a lot going on. If you're interested in history, you'll love this place.
Marin K — Google review
Amazing place! This church built 1230 is super important in Bulgarian history. Quiet and hidden treasure of Veliko Tarnovo. You can sit next to the grave of Medieval Bulgarian tzar Kaloyan and reflect on meaning of eternal categories like life, love, time, beauty, faith. Inside this small church there is a solid marble column with a sign dating from 9th century Bulgarian Khan Omurtag saying “A man, even if his life is good, dies and someone else is born, but he leaves behind what he have built...” Surrounded by those gorgeous medieval walls that thought makes you a builder instead of demolisher.
Илия В — Google review
Honestly, I thought the renovations make the place look modern. Also, there is lack of information to make one care. I understand it’s supposed to be a key historical site and where some rulers were buried, but I only found that out by looking it up after visiting because I was so underwhelmed. It would be nice to include some explanatory material in English and other languages.
Ben P — Google review
While the church is full of history, it lacks the spirit of old, since it was completely renovated and rather empty. 6 BGN is a price for almost every ticket in Veliko Tarnovo. For this church is overpriced.

Archaeological Museum

History Museums
The Archaeological Museum in Veliko Tarnovo offers a fascinating journey through the city's evolution. It showcases archaeological findings from various ancient settlements dating back to 5700 BC, including Djulyunitsa and Hotnitsa. The museum houses a remarkable collection of golden objects from Hotnitsa, some dating as far back as 4100 BC. With a strong focus on the Second Bulgarian Empire, it provides insight into the region's rich history.
This is the hidden gem of the museum sites in Tarnovo, along with the Sarafkina house. This is the first building in Bulgaria built with the intent of housing a library and a museum, not repurposed like many other museums in Bulgaria. The exhibition is slightly outdated in its presentation, but the actual artifacts are very interesting and span from the late paleolithic era up to the medieval period of the Second Bulgarian empire. Admission tickets are quite affordable too.
Elin A — Google review
The building of the museum is beautiful from the outside, the small courtyard is well arranged with exhibits and flourishing decorative vegetation. The exhibitions presented inside are very interesting and orginised with historical accuracy. What was of particular interest to me were the ancient thracian tomb reconstruction, and ring of tsar Kaloyan. Even though the inside of the building is in desperate need of restoration, the museum still manages to present to the visitor significant interesting pieces of the long Bulgarian history.
Aleksander T — Google review
My favourite back yard in the city. Amazing building. Fantastic atmosphere with music from the main entrance. Payment by card is possible they have terminal.
Lora T — Google review
Verdict: by a long mile, this is the worst museum we've visited in Bulgaria, with its rude and unhelpful (sometimes outright hostile) staff, poor exhibition planning and museography, lack of any narrative on the exhibits, and poorly maintained facility that's falling apart. There are way more idling staff than visitors, but the staff has not been helpful. Details: on the outside, the yard looks tranquil and beautiful with sculptures, columns, and plants arranged around each other. On the inside, the air is full of dense dust that could choke you, as the carpet has not been vacuumed for years and air not circulated properly for months at least. The exhibition area is small and badly planned even by 1990s standards: 2 rooms on the ground floor, 2 rooms and a tiny cabinet room on the first floor, all lighted with a few fluorescent tube lights on the ceiling and in good weather, some natural light from the windows. Most items are cased behind high-glare glasses with little to no signage or explanation or story around the items. On the rare occasion there's context and narrative around the items, it's 2 short sentences entirely in Bulgarian. There's no sign in English or other languages at all throughout the building. The staff there are also rude, unhelpful, and hostile to visitors. First, you can't just walk through a door and buy a ticket -- you have to ring a bell and wait for someone to come and let you in. Then, nobody there, including the ticket lady, speaks a word of English or any other language. Later, when we returned to an exhibition room we visited earlier, she followed us and tried to talk us into leaving the building because "there's nothing to see". She became visible frustrated when we politely but firmly told her that we wanted to take our time to make sure we don't miss anything, but eventually she left us alone. When we finally went for the door, she bolted from her desk to lock the door after us with a loud thud. And this is not counting other museum staff who did not even try to understand our question about the toilet's location, and just shrugged and disappeared into the "staff only" area never to be seen again. At least the ticket lady pointed out where the toilet is. Protip: - You need to ring a bell and wait for someone to open the door for you. - You can pay for the ticket by card. - The indoor air is very dusty and can choke you badly. Wearing a mask indoors is not a bad idea.
Alex S — Google review
I like history and archeology, but would not recommend this museum. Information in English is very sparse, but even the Bulgarian texts are not very informative. For example: There is a room dedicated to the "Tomb of the Thracian Dynasty" that just has a list of the objects. there is absolutely zero information on what this tomb was or where it was found. 10 leva/5 euros is too expensive for what you get. Nice building and garden though. You can pay by card.
Lotte K — Google review
3.6 not great, not terrible. The building itself is worth seeing but the museum is not much and you don't get value for money. Price of entrance is 6 leva which is a lot for a place where you have no narrative and no explanations, only tags in Bulgarian and sometimes in English of the type "arrow-heads" for a bunch of... arrow-heads. The building is rundown and the exhibition seems to have been very little changed if at all since the communist era when it was designed. Staff doesn't speak any international language and you need to insist to enter, they have very few visitors and they don't pay attention that much
Klaus W — Google review
Pros: - very reach material well exposed in organized cabinets - very nice building - very nice court yard. Cons: - all the rooms were very dusty. It is very difficult to breath there. It is a urgent need of professional cleaning of the carpets - even though some labels were translated in English, the main posters describing the periods, context, etc, are not. - one of the ladies from the entrance was very polite, but other one has a very strange attitude: as soon as we went outside for a short (breathing) break, she closed and locked the door, even though our 12y son was still inside. After we returned in 5 mins, she asked us to buy tickets (she didn't noticed that we are the same persons and somebody remained inside.
Daniel U — Google review
If you’re interested in archaeology, this place is fascinating. They have a great collection of artifacts, mostly with good descriptions in English. Your phone can translate the rest. The dusty condition of the building should not deter you if you like the subject.

Museum of the Revival and Constituent Assembly

Museums
The Museum of the Revival and Constituent Assembly is housed in a prominent building in Veliko Tarnovo, originally built as the Turkish Konak in 1872. This historical site was where Bulgaria's first National Assembly convened to draft the country's inaugural constitution in 1879. The museum features a remarkable collection of 18th and 19th-century icons, making it well worth the entrance fee.
The place where the first Constitution of Bulgaria was voted. It’s a must visit!
Polina P — Google review
An interesting museum that you should visit. You can see in the ground floor among other, the historical persons and moments from the rebellion against the Turks. In the first floor you can see history and development of culture and education and the place where the parliament was, and to the basement an amazing collection of old christian religious picture's.
Fanis P — Google review
Located in a huge Ottoman style house it hosts an impressive collection of icons from the 18th and 19th century which alone fully deserves the entry fee of 6 leva. The rest of the exhibits are a bit of a mess, this is one of those Communist style museums that doesn't know what it wants to be: ethnographic, history or art museum. Some of the tags are in English but not that many. The upper floor has a reconstruction of the benches in the first parliament after the country gained independence. A lot of space is not used, the story is not focused and it smells old. House itself is worth seeing, staff stayed out of my way when I visited, overall fully recommended
Klaus W — Google review
A good place for a short Bulgarian history. A lot of Orthodox icons and historical artefacts.
Name N — Google review
Its really beautiful! We came across it by mistake but the visit was worth it!
Andreea S — Google review
Within a former Turkish town hall built in 1872, this is where Bulgaria’s first National Assembly was held to write the country’s first constitution in 1879. The ground floor charts administrative and daily life in Veliko Târnovo from the 15th to 19th centuries, using costumes, books and photos, building up to the Bulgarian National Revival. The former assembly hall, upstairs, displays portraits of local personalities, while the basement has old photos and some valuable icons. It is also a very beautiful building built by the famous Koliu Ficheto.
Nikolay G — Google review
This parliament building is very dissimilar to others, which makes it interesting This building is conveniently located and should be viewed by travelers. Hopefully, as the years of democracy continue onward, this building will take on greater significance.
MacRoBu — Google review
Very educational for those who loved to travel and learn a bit of history of the place, had a pleasant stay keep it up we enjoyed it ! The place is clean and well Maintain keep it up!

Mini-Bulgaria Park, located near the main cultural attraction of Tsarevets in Veliko Tarnovo, showcases miniature models of Bulgaria's famous landmarks and architectural wonders. Visitors can marvel at replicas of Tsarevets, the Monastery of St. Ivan of Rila, palaces, and strongholds. The park also features the iconic Stambolov Bridge over the Yantra River, named after Veliko Tarnovo's Stefan Stambolov.
You can enjoy and spend time near most popular and remarkable places in county Some of them are really nice. In park have places for rest and caffe. Tickets for adults 15 lev
Jackie Y — Google review
Really nice. You see all Bulgarian vuildings/attractions. But some of the miniatures are old broken, lakes were not filled in with water and dirty. Probably in January is outside season.
Radu I — Google review
Good experience, but several items still is under construction. Mini train is great to see with child. Can’t compare with legoland, but good place to spend 30-60 min.
Сергей В — Google review
After visiting Tsarevest Castle, you can come here. They are very close to each other. It is a very quiet and beautiful place among the mountains, a touristic place where you can spend time with your child. It is great to see all the Bulgarian architectural structures here without visiting them. Some architectural structures have not been filled with water yet. It should be taken care of immediately to be interesting. The cafe built for sitting and resting is insufficient. You can find souvenirs, although few. There is a parking lot opposite for the car. The entrance fee is quite reasonable. I think a hall should be built for a promotional film about Bulgarian history, it would be a much more interesting place for tourists.
B K — Google review
We had a great time here. Both my kids and I loved seeing all the major landmarks and walking from one end of Bulgaria to the other. The park was hit by a storm earlier in the year that caused a lot of damage but it's still makes for a great experience. We were also given a 20% discount due to this. I hope that they can repair it to it's full glory as soon as possible. We also thought that it would be funny to see a mini, mini- Bulgaria in one of the empty spots.
Chelle L — Google review
Worth a visit. A great way to get to know the main attractions around Bulgaria. I withhold a star for the bare landscape - it’ll look a lot better with more green areas in between, currently it looks rather bare. Also, the monuments in the Varna/Nessebar area are visibly smaller, which makes them less attractive compared to the originals.
Diana S — Google review
It was a really fun and interesting place to visit. A great way to get to know Bulgaria within an hour. The only thing I did not like was the illustration of Bansko. I used to live there. It is an amazing place to visit. In this mini park, it looked boring.
Rita S — Google review
Worth the visit. Just 10 minutes by foot from the city center. All the structures are realistic and interesting. It’s weird there are miniatures of airports and ports, but who am I to judge.

Samovodska charshia market

Market
Samovodska Charshia market, also known as Old Town, is a charming historic street located in the heart of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. This vibrant area is packed with traditional craft shops and souvenir stores offering handmade items such as woodcarvings, charms, and jewelry. Visitors can immerse themselves in the old-world atmosphere while exploring the unique offerings of this authentic market.
Amazing street, we were lucky enough to have an apartment accommodation just there. Nice little stores with traditional artisan crafts. Pricey, but you can find things for every budget.
Ina M — Google review
It's truly a wonderful area! When visiting, you feel like you're somewhere in Bavaria or Switzerland. Small, beautiful houses made out of stone, small shops, cafeterias, wineries, restaurants, it's something out of a fairytale. When we visited during the weekend, all the streets were filled with stalls of small producers, selling jeweleries, natural products, home made desserts, cosmetics, candels, souvenirs, clothes, bags, anything you would think of. During weekdays it wasn't open. If you get to Veliko, this place should be a MUST on your list and it's right in the heart of the city. I don't know if the city is as busy in the autumn-winter season as it is in spring/summer, but when we visited, the whole city was very crowded and we were really lucky to find a single parking spot because a taxi was just leaving. The good part is that during weekend the parking is free, so we were able to visit the whole city for hours without worrying cause I, personally, could not manage paying at the parking meters i found there. The ones i came across were old and they only had instructions in bulgarian.
Queen R — Google review
A nice short street, a flavour of Veliko Tarnovo. Plenty of options for souvenirs, arts and crafts items.
Thanath G — Google review

C C — Google review
Beautiful street with craftsmen workshops in the heart of the old city. You can see woodcarvers, copper smiths, sugar sweets makers, jewellers, leather shops etc. Great place for children to learn about crafts and pick authentic souvenirs. There are quiet cafes and restaurants, restricted traffic on the narrow streets.
Fidanka B — Google review
It's a beautiful place to stay for a while. We were here on our way to the Buzludzha Monument and for about two Euro you can climb the stairs to the top of the tower. Plenty of memorabilia on each floor.

This is a great street with old architecture and buildings. The condition of the street is great. You can find little souvenir shops, antique shops. Also you can see bulgarian traditions - the street used to be a market!

Park "Sveta Gora"

Mentioned on
6 lists
Park
Park 'Sveta Gora' is a sprawling and hilly park offering stunning city views from the Sky Bridge lookout, as well as tree-lined paths for leisurely strolls. It is conveniently accessible via hiking paths from Veliko Tarnovo, providing an opportunity for a challenging uphill hike that culminates in breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The park underwent a grand renovation in 2016 to enhance its natural beauty and promote environmental preservation.
This is a great place in the centre of Veliko Tornovo. We parked up for a few nights in the car park, and explored the whole city, but kept coming back to this park. The whole area around the art gallery is great. The huge Assen Dynasty monument, the gallery itself, and the sculpture walk on the other side, with a water fountain that has some of the nicest water I’ve ever had!
Mike R — Google review
Positive aspects:Affordable accommodations, good food, friendly people and a lot of interesting historical sites to see. Negative aspects: Most of the infrastructure, including most historical buildings, are poorly maintained.
Arijan L — Google review
Great to play football, badmington, or just have a walk.
Vasilena I — Google review
So beautiful, but it isn't any sign to orientation, any inscription, any signalization on the road... so pity!
Florentina P — Google review
Great park but one hell of a hike. We counted around 350 steps. There are great views from the sky bridge and a good playground. The effort to get up here means the park is not so crowded. Very peaceful.
Tim P — Google review
The park is really a gem of Veliko Turnovo but it hasn't been maintained well in the past 10 years. Despite that there is a viewpoint with a nice panorama of Tsarevets fortress. Some playgrounds, benches, offroad cycle tracks even skateboard park. At night it has a lot of good views of the city lights. Across the park there are 345 stairs, as it is on a hill. There are some untracked footpaths that connect both ends but there is no lights for those at night. Overall the potential of the park is not well exploited.
Martin W — Google review
It's a landmark for the locals, it's a monument, a great hangout spot and somewhere events are sometimes hosted. There's also a bar and toilets you can use for free.
Luna A — Google review
Such an amazing history here. Even though a lot of it was recreated under Communist rule and by Russian influence, it's incredible to visit this place and realize what the Bulgarian state must have been prior to the Ottoman Empire coming through. As incredible are the pieces of evidence from the Byzantine times in 500-700, and from even earlier around Roman times. All the things this place must have been. Were the Thracians also using this place? Hard to fathom the battle that would have taken place for the Turks to take a hill that was so fortified and so seemingly impenetrable. Wish we had had more time here, and definitely feels like a place we will return to.

State Art Gallery "Boris Denev"

Art gallery
The State Art Gallery "Boris Denev" is a must-visit in Assen, offering a delightful experience for art enthusiasts. The gallery is housed in a beautiful building designed to resemble a medieval temple, providing an impressive backdrop near the Monument to the Assen Dynasty. Visitors can explore the bright and spacious gallery spread across two floors, featuring both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The collection of paintings is truly remarkable, with some pieces leaving a profound impact on viewers.
Really enjoyed our visit to the state art gallery where there was a special exhibition of paintings. The gallery itself is bright and on 2 floors. The paintings are incredible and the 8 Lev entrance fee is nothing when you consider the costs in other countries.
Derek — Google review
Verdict : An art museum does not have to be the Uffizi or the Louvre to be a good museum. This is a good regional museum of art that has plenty of works by local artists (Boris Denev, the gallery's namesake artist, was from Veliko Tarnovo) and about local scenes, updated facility, welcoming and professional staff, and signage in English. Storytelling could be better but it's on the right track. Worth an hour or two to visit and learn more about the city, the region, and Bulgarian art. Details: It's by the Assen dynasty monument on the island and you can't miss it. Two floors in total, each floor has two wings, and each wing has both sculptures and paintings by artists from the region around Veliko Tarnovo or works about VT or episodes in Bulgarian history that happened in the area. Facility has updated temperature control and lighting fixtures, so no annoying glares for the most part. Every work has a bilingual label in English and Bulgarian with the key info, so you know what you are actually looking at. Several rooms are organized around themes, and each theme is explored in more detail on a board that gives an overview of the works and context of the theme. There's no individual narrative (e.g. who's the painter or sculptor, what were their ideas for the work) for any painting or sculpture, but the overall intro is mostly sufficient for the backstory and context. We learned quite a few new things about the town, the region, and Bulgarian art from the time of medieval icons to contemporary works. Protips: - You can pay by card. - There's no cloakroom or bag storage. - Most sculptures are on the ground floor, paintings are on the first floor.
Alex S — Google review
Nice gallery but I don’t understand why I wasn’t allowed in the ground floor left side galleries when other people were in there. Maybe my shirt was clashing with the artworks.

Lots of paintings devoted to themes from Bulgarian history and the regional landscape. Most are historically interesting because they offer a window onto Bulgaria’s national mythology. A few are also artistically interesting.
Green M — Google review
Amazing experience for both the permanent exhibition and the temporary. Surely a place worth visiting.
Φωτεινη Χ — Google review
An interesting corner of the town, hosting a variety of paintings made by Bulgarian artists. Fortunately there were English descriptions below the artefacts. However the place was cold and it definitely needs a renovation inside. Academic id card from foreigners is accepted.

In the heart of Veliko Tarnovo stands the magnificent Monument to the Assen Dynasty, a tribute to the kings Assen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. Erected in 1985 to mark the 800th anniversary of their rebellion, this towering obelisk with statues of the four kings on horseback is a symbol of Bulgaria's rich history.
A must-visit landmark in Veliko Tarnovo! 🇧🇬🏇 The Monument to the Assen Dynasty is an impressive tribute to the great Bulgarian tsars who played a key role in the country’s medieval history. The four majestic horsemen, standing tall against the backdrop of the Yantra River, symbolize strength, unity, and the golden age of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The monument is located in a beautiful park, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Veliko Tarnovo. Went for the Boris Denev gallery but sadly it was closed, however the statues and the surrounding view plus the walk across the bridge is very worth it should you find yourself in a similar situation when the building is closed.

This is a pretty epic monument. I’d have loved more info about the Assen Dynasty, but it’s cool no matter what. Huge in scale, with multiple horsemen statues surrounding the central spire. It’s visited quite a lot considering there’s not a lot around it. We spent 4 nights in our RV just below it. It was a fantastic thing to look out on in the morning.

Han Hadji Nikoli Restaurant

Restaurant
Han Hadji Nikoli Restaurant is located on the charming Craft Street (Samovodska Charshiya) and boasts a beautiful building that exemplifies Bulgarian architecture. The courtyard outside is a delightful spot to dine, especially on warm evenings. While some dishes like the Bulgarian salad and mushrooms with cheese are recommended, others such as the bread and pork neck fell short in terms of taste and texture. The service, however, was highlighted for its friendliness and politeness.
Absolute gem! It is in the touristy part of town but if you are looking for Bulgarian cuisine with a modern twist, highly recommend. Service was superb and food was delicious. The courtyard is very charming and quite even though you are steps away from the Main Street. We had a great experience!
Monika L — Google review
The restaurant is very beautiful, old and elegantly furnished. For food you don’t have much variety and we can’t say it was the best. But the situation was saved by salads and desserts. The onion soup was way below expectations. I honestly expected to be served “Au gratin” with bread and cheese in top. Taste was fine. All table ordered fried chicken with potatoes - the potatoes were tasty (both baked and the gratin). I have no feedback about the chicken. All salads very fresh. The drinks got us disappointed because they have in menu big and small lemonade. We wanted big, they didn’t have - but the lemonade comes in glass so I assume they have it already made but no big cup for it? The house cocktails wasn’t tasty. The desserts cleaned all disappointment 😂 all of them were amazing!
Andreea D — Google review
The restaurant has a lovely ambiance that merges both vintage and modern interior design. the staff is attentive as well as make good conversation. I ordered the trout as well as crispy chicken and an iced dessert with candied hazelnuts, i thoroughly enjoyed each dish but would recommend you to come hungry as the portion sizes were quite big and I couldn’t finish everything. it’s a great place for a relaxed dinner with family or friends. My only suggestion would be that as sitting outside is too cold this time of the year to make the inside of the restaurant warmer for a more comfortable dining experience. Keep up the good work !
Karenza W — Google review
Very nice building of the old times. The food was very mediocre, no taste, very expensive, souless. The service was very polite but stressed and sometimes confused
Dam S — Google review
Super nice place in the old part of the city, service and food are spot on.
Hristo P — Google review
In one hour they managed to serve us a leaf salad. The salad was not bad despite the price and the staff were friendly. However, if at 2 pm takes over an hour to make pork schnitzel, I would not go back at pick times especially with hungry kids!
Pavlina D — Google review
Since not hungry we just ordered 3 dish. The Bulgarian salad is recommended, you can try different types together. But the bread is no good, it was too greasy and taste a bit bitter. The pork neck is too dry but the taste is good, which shows the quality of rough material but also poor of cooking. The mushrooms is recommended, very good combination with cheese. Also I have to highlight the service, the young lady is really nice and polite.

Shtastliveca is a popular restaurant in Veliko Tarnovo, known for its local Bulgarian cuisine and European dishes. It has received positive reviews and is highly rated on various platforms. The restaurant offers a wide selection of dishes, with fast service even during peak hours. Visitors praise the delicious food, excellent service, and pleasant views from the terrace. While reservations are recommended for terrace seating, the overall dining experience at Shtastliveca is described as enjoyable and worth returning to.
Restaurant with a great view. Food was good - the stuffed chicken roll (best eaten whilst hot) reminded me of Cordon Bleu except that it was much better. The seared pork neck with the kerkelek maize was an interesting choice as well. Prices were reasonable and the ambience was good. Recommended!

Welcoming staff, very good and responsive service and the food was delicious! Keep it up! Note! For dinner for sure it ibis better to book to have a good place or avoiding a long waiting list!
Youshij Y — Google review
The restaurant offers both a visual and gourmet experience. I recommend booking a table in advance, as it can be noisy on the outdoor terrace. (August 1, 2025).
Radovan K — Google review
This has been my favourite restaurant for years! The staff are absolute sweethearts - welcoming, helpful and so so kind. The location is stunning - if you’re lucky, you can get a table with a beautiful view of the city. And the food … is on another world! I simply love how they take the authentic Bulgarian cuisine and give it a modern twist while maintaining the classic flavours and using a variety of homemade ingredients. An absolute highlight of the city!
Slavena T — Google review
The food is excellent and the staff very friendly. We stop here every time we pass through Veliko, and they never disappoint. Dogs are allowed on the terrace.
Dorian M — Google review
A very fine restaurant that has its own style. You should try to get a seat on the terrace (Reservation), the view is perfect and a fresh breeze blows around your ears. The dessert was perfect, as was the main course. The only drawback is the smoking in the outdoor areas, both on the terrace and in the front. The waiters are very quick and courteous. English is not a problem here, they all speak very good English. I can highly recommend the restaurant with a clear conscience. #theveltikoescape

I cannot give less than 5 stars to this restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious and had a very fresh approach of the traditional cuisine. First things first, the restaurant looks stunning, the terrace has the best view, it's clean, neat, good music, wonderfuly decorated! We did not have a reservation and we kindly asked one of the girls if she could squeeze us in because usually everybody likes to eat outside on the terrace. She checked the bookings and she managed to find a seat for us. The waiters (both of them), two young boys, very kind and polite, quick to respond to our requests and very very communicative.Lovely staff! We ordered tarama salad, chicken liver pate and creamy cow cheese with truffles for starters, and katmer with vanilla plus baked biscuit for desserts. Everything was DELICIOUS! The liver paté was my favorite though, having a very original approach of the classic receipe : the creamy part on top, small chunks of cooked liver in the middle and chopped parsley with green onions on the bottom. It was a delight! I really recommend to try it! All the dishes arrived in fair time and we got to please our soul and our bellies at the same time because this food was heavenly and the view and the vibe likewise. This was the first restaurant i got to visit back in 2015-2016 when i went to Veliko for the first time and i continued to eat here many times til 2019 when i visited Veliko the last time.So now, 6 years later, i was really really curious to see if they kept their quality and i was NOT disappointed! Last but not least, it's best to book ahead if you want a seat on the terrace to enjoy the view and parking is easy, there is a parking lot just across the street. Shtastliveca has been a wonderful experience for both my husband and I , and I can't wait to visit again.I recommend it with all my heart!

We ate here in our one day staying in Veliko, and it was a very pleasant surprise. We took a pizza Quattro formagi, one Diavolo, some pork tender loin, and some pork stew (forgot the name of the dish). The food was very taste and flavorful and good ratio cost / quality / quantity.

EGO pizza & grill The Old Town

Mediterranean restaurant
Bulgarian restaurant
EGO Pizza & Grill The Old Town is nestled within the captivating Varusha, also known as Veliko Tarnovo's Old Town. This historic district boasts winding streets, ancient homes, and stunning vistas that transport visitors to a bygone era. Despite missing out on the valley views during an evening visit, the restaurant's inviting prices and delectable dishes made it a standout choice. The menu offered a variety of pizzas at reasonable rates compared to other tourist-centric establishments in the area.
I ordered a pizza from Ego Pizza & Grill in the Old Town, and it was fantastic! The crust was perfectly crispy, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. The staff was friendly, and the service was quick, even during a busy time. The location in the heart of the Old Town is also a bonus, with a nice atmosphere. Definitely a great spot for pizza in the area. Highly recommend!

Pizza and salads are delicious, and so are the barbecue and grilled specialties. The staff is friendly and we didn't have to wait too long for our food, even if the place was full, as it was Orthodox Easter weekend. If not the best, definitely one of the best restaurants in town!

I had lunch at EGO, the pizza and grill restaurant, and the pizza was excellent. The crust was light but still crisp, and the toppings tasted fresh. The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, with a clean and modern feel. Service was friendly and efficient, which made the whole experience easy and enjoyable. I would definitely go back, especially for the pizza.

The restaurant offers delicious food at reasonable prices, with a strong Balkan atmosphere. It is known as one of the most authentic Balkanic restaurants around. Although the service can be a bit challenging due to limited English proficiency among the staff, they provide English menus and make an effort to ensure accurate orders. The overall experience is highly enjoyable, especially if dining on the balcony with its stunning views.
A delightful little family restaurant with breathtaking views and food that feels like a warm hug. It’s unpretentious and inviting. A must-visit for a memorable view!

I came to this restaurant in search of traditional Bulgarian food and was not disappointed. The view is wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious, I had the pork kavarma and some lovely bread. The man who served me (I assume the owner) provided excellent service, friendly, speedy and gave recommendations. I would definitely advise others to eat here.

We were first suspicious because of some bad reviews here, but the friendliness of the owner and his hospitality blew it away within seconds. We felt very welcome. The food was typical bulgarian with nothing to complain about and the view from the terrace at sunset was simply awesome.
Jo87casi C — Google review
Low hygiene, small portions, the food doesn’t have any taste and everything is either raw or very greasy. And on top of that comes the rude owner.. the nice view does not compensate all that!

Bulgarian restaurant
Located in the heart of Veliko Tarnovo, Restaurant "Ivan Asen" perfectly complements the medieval ambiance of the city. The interior is adorned with stained glass, an old-style fountain, and columns that replicate inscriptions from Bulgarian medieval rulers. The menu offers a wide selection of European and Bulgarian national cuisine, particularly catering to meat lovers. A must-try dish is the satch, a sizzling hot plate filled with meat and veggies.
Not a tourist trap!! Friendly staff, who speak English well. Food is to die for! Native Bulgarian dishes done well. Make sure you try the biscuit and chocolate mascarpone dessert! Wine choices - try the local Bulgarian wines - not easily found outside of Bulgaria, yet unbelievably good. Bonus, amazing view of the Fortress!

Not very impressive about the food, but I was able to finish my lunch at 2:30pm. The place let people to smoke inside and out. So, if you are a smoker this is the place for you.
Chris S — Google review
Great food, excellent views and close proximity to the fortress. Good place to grab a beer after a long walk.
Ben R — Google review
Good food, fantastic view over the fortification, good service and reasonable prices.
Patric I — Google review
The stars are purely for the view. We were sent to the top floor, however, every time we needed something we had to go down and call for a waiter. The food took ages to come through and the food was nothing close to good. It was cold and badly cooked and seemed to have a lot of effort put into making it look nice, but it tasted somewhat terrible. It’s a shame since the view and the area the place is in is amazing, and you’d think the food would reflect that.
Bilal H — Google review
Only cash here! The food was good and the waiter nice but we encountered other inconviniences. They refused to serve us soups although other people were eating soups when we came in. They did not have the deserts in their menu, only cakes - dissapointing because you would expect traditional food from a restaurant near the fortress. Did not accepted Card as a payment which meant that I had to walk 8 minutes uphill till the nearest atm which overcharged me 12 BGN, by the way and then rush back to pay where I found my wife upset because they took her glass from the table - so rude.
Bogdan C — Google review
Location was good, Surrounding was good, Customer service was good. Parking can be an issue. Food only tried salad and french fries as no much choice for Vegetarians in Bulgaria hence cannot comment much. They can do much better but it is the ownes choice how he wants to maintain.

The recently discovered Restaurant Asenevtsi in Veliko Tarnovo offers an impressive culinary experience at reasonable prices. Patrons can enjoy a wide variety of dishes from their extensive menu, which includes delectable sushi options. The service is efficient and precise, ensuring customer satisfaction. Although the prices may be slightly higher, the quality of the food is unparalleled. The restaurant itself is compact yet accommodating with clean facilities.
Wish we found this place earlier!! Everything was delicious - salad, pasta and pork ribs, followed by a slice of baklava cake. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. A waiter brought tobasco sauce when he realized I like my food spicy! Very considerate.

Asenevtsi Restaurant – Nice Place with Pleasant Atmosphere ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Asenevtsi Restaurant in Veliko Tarnovo offers a very pleasant atmosphere – cozy, nicely arranged, and suitable for both lunch and dinner. The service is good – the staff is polite, attentive, and the food is served quickly and with care. The presentation of the dishes is impressive, everything looks well-prepared and appealing. However, there’s still room for improvement in the flavors, as the taste doesn’t fully match the great presentation and ambiance. Overall, it’s a nice restaurant with good potential.
Evgenia Z — Google review
I'm pretty disappointed with the food quality-price ratio of this restaurant. I'm surprised it has such a high rating. Food is very well presented but without taste. The prices are very high, we spent 94 lev for two persons with two soft drinks with no meat meals. Sudzuk black angus is actual File Elena and it costs 16 lev. Pasta Carbonara came overcooked and the sauce was tastless, smelling on raw eggs and generally overtaken by the eggs taste. The staff is polite and speak good English.
Jelena P — Google review
Great restaurant: all food was tasty... fresh & huge seabass, amazing Quattro formaggi pizza, well done creme brule and home-made lemonade. And cocoa with milk. Whatever we ordered was great! We'll be back here for sure!
Petrica P — Google review
I had an extremely unpleasant experience at this restaurant. In my meal, I found a worm, and on top of this serious issue, I had ordered salmon which was raw in the middle and had to be sent back to the kitchen to be cooked again. What bothered me even more was the waiter’s reaction – very rude and disrespectful towards the customer. I believe that a serious restaurant should pay attention to hygiene, food quality, and respect for its customers.

The restaurant is in a great location and the service was attentive, but unfortunately that’s where the positives end. The food is overpriced for what you get. The salad was bland, the fried calamari portion was tiny (just about five rings for 23 lv), and the appetiser set was underwhelming. While the restaurant does offer a beautiful view, the dirty windows take away from the experience.

I really recommend this place, I have found a real “gem” in Veliko! They have delicious food, nice ambiance, very frieny staff and relaxing music - all accompanied by a stunning view. The restaurant is a mix between traditional bulgarian food, arabic and italian (pizza & pasta), all cooked in an unique way by their chef. I would recommend spicy shrimps, garlic oven bread, foie gras with orange and apples in a special sauce, chicken shawarma, crispy parmesan fish, duck magret (/w berry jam), black angus burger, pork knuckle in mushroom sauce and halloumi salad with herbs.

Beautiful location! It is a family owned restaurant and we have been going there for the last 3 years. The menu is limited to grill and salad and french fries but the food is prepared tastefully. My husband had a chicken steak with some very tasty spices on it. My grilled meatball (кюфте) was delicious. We finished with turkish coffee that was served in cute chinawear. The beautiful riverview and warm hospitality make the dining experience charming and unforgettable. This restaurant received an award for highest rating and number of google reviews in 2022. So the vibe and costumer service was good but when we finaly got the food it wasnt what we were expecting. So in the end I dont think I would recommend eating in this place.

Great food and service, lovely staff, absolutely amazing view. Very Instagram-able location. I got a filling and very satisfying meal out of the burrata-zucchini salad and the cheesy peppers (covered in about a pound of delicious, melty cheese). My friends got the cheeseburger and weren't that impressed, they mentioned that the patty more closely resembled the Serbian Pljeskavica than the American burger they were envisioning but they still ate everything. That being said, the visit was definitely a success. 10/10 would come again.

This restaurant is next to my hotel. I stumbled by and found it and finally decided to have dinner here. The interior of the restaurant has a very special and unique décor. I really like the murals on the walls. The waitress who served me was very friendly. With his help, I ended up ordering a tripe soup and some traditional barbecue. I highly recommend the tripe soup here, it is very delicious and can be served with garlic or chili. If you don't like tripe, you can also ask for it to be removed. The traditional Bulgarian barbecue here is also very tasty, and I loved the homemade sausages and meat strips💕
