Nessebar

Nessebar is a town in Burgas Province, on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The cobbled streets of the old town, which sits on a promontory, are lined with ruins such as Byzantine-era fortifications and baths. The Church of Christ Pantokrator is a stunning red-brick and white-stone church in Nessebar, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. It currently serves as an art museum, showcasing vintage cards and archaeological finds that highlight the city's rich history as a trading hub. The exterior of the church is adorned with unique blind arches made of alternating bricks and stones, reflecting the architectural style of its time.
Old nessebar is a must visit spot! It was absolutely stunning with gorgeous restaurants, small markets and lovely people. It is full of history and a beautiful beach, this was one of my favourite day trips when travelling to Bulgaria!

Nice old town district. The coffee shop on the corner is the true reason for my review, the nicest I have found in the area but it doesn't have a Google business to review.

We visited Old nessebar for the morning, and loved it so much we stayed for the day. A buetiful little hidden gem, with quirky streets and cobbled roads and quaint cafes. Steeped in history, if you are in the area (we went from sunny beach) you will have a fab day out.

It's one of the symbolic churches to present the Nessebar old town.

The Church of Christ Pantokrator in Bulgaria is a cultural treasure. Its Byzantine architecture and vibrant frescoes transport visitors to another era. The intricate detailing reflects remarkable craftsmanship, and the serene atmosphere adds to its spiritual charm. While the exterior is weathered, the interior's historical significance and religious artistry make it a compelling visit. Accessible location and guided tours contribute to a meaningful experience, making this church a must-see for history and art enthusiasts in Bulgaria.

Beautiful old ruin of a church, amazing to be a le to walk around it and completely free of charge. Can get very busy so if you want to take photos go early in the morning before the crowds!

Only ruins remain but is beautiful place to go and enjoy the culture, was quite busy in the area and surrounded with small markets and shops. You don’t need to spend so much time walking around to see everything, there are no restrictions on viewing the ruins and it’s free to view.

Nesebar Archaeological Museum is a must-visit in the Old Town, offering a rich collection of artifacts and medieval Christian icons. The exhibition 'Nessebar through the Ages' provides insights into the town's history from the time of the Thracians, Roman and Byzantine Empires to the Bulgarian state. Visitors can explore different halls showcasing its diverse historical periods. Additionally, nearby attractions like the Church of Saint Sofia and St.
During our short visit to Nesebar, we had the chance to explore the Archaeological Museum — and I’m so glad we did. I went with the kids, and even though our time was limited, the museum gave us a beautiful insight into the long, layered history of this ancient town. The exhibits are well-organized and easy to follow, even for children. From Greek pottery and Roman artifacts to early Christian relics, every room tells a story. It was amazing to see how many different civilizations passed through this small piece of land. We learned at the entrance that there’s an option to visit seven historical sites around the old town with a combined ticket. Due to time, we only chose the museum and St Stefan Church, which was also stunning — its frescoes left a real impression on all of us. Next time, I’d love to explore the rest of the sites and really dive deeper into Nesebar’s rich past. Even in a short visit, this museum made the history come alive. Highly recommend if you're visiting with children or have even just an hour or two to spare.

Enjoyed walking around. We came 7 years ago and everything, especially drinks were really cheap. Not so any more not much cheaper than the UK. But at least u get the blue skies.

Lovely, clean air-conditioned place, good few artifacts on show. But it's very repetitive. The icons that are down stairs are beautiful. If your spending the day on Nessebar is probably worn buying the multi attraction ticket

If you visit sunny beach you have to take time out to visit nessebar. It is a beautiful place with many interesting sites to visit. It has some lovely shops and restaurants, and many historical sites. Beautiful place

UNESCO heritage site, lovely place to visit, allow a couple of hours as the place is big, mobility scooter friendly, friendly people too.
Danny B — Google review
Small museum but with some very interesting local artefacts such as coins, bronze funerary urns and terracotta statuettes. An entry fee applies. You can buy a combination ticket that also includes entrance to Nesebar’s ethnographic museum and/or various churches.
David S — Google review
Very unique and quaint place to visit. A bit hilly in places, especially if you have a wheelchair or pushchair/buggy. Historically it is interesting and some of the buildings are very strangely built compared to UK. Lots of places to eat and drink, lots of shops selling gifts. Easily spend a day there.

Old Town Nessebar, also known as Nesebar, is a captivating UNESCO World Heritage Site situated on the coast of the Black Sea in Bulgaria. With a history spanning over 3,000 years, this ancient town seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern attractions. The architectural ensemble showcases well-preserved Bulgarian Renaissance structures that harmonize with the rocky peninsula.
We had a great walk around the old town, we hired a car and was unsure where to park but found out after a walk there is good parking right next to it. We did enjoy the walk across and got some good pictures of the windmill. There were many restaurants and the views were amazing definitely enough for a full day out.

This is a lovely old town. Beautiful buildings, old churches, UNESCO ruins. The town is vibrant and filled with little shops and restaurants. There are some unique gallery spaces as well. You can see artists creating the wears as they sell them. It was a very charming place to visit.

Nessebar Old Town is an absolutely charming and picturesque little place that feels like stepping back in time. It's a joy to wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets, which are shaded by beautiful trees, providing a welcome escape from the sun. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The town is filled with a fantastic variety of small shops and stalls selling all sorts of little treasures. You'll find everything from local crafts and handmade jewelry to quirky souvenirs. It's a great spot to find a unique memento to take home. With its stunning views, historic feel, and endless hidden corners to discover, Nessebar Old Town is truly a gem on the Black Sea coast.

Old Town Nessebar, located on a rocky peninsula along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, is a mesmerizing blend of history, architecture, and seaside charm. Often referred to as a “living museum,” Nessebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe, with a history dating back over 3,000 years. Its unique atmosphere and well-preserved heritage have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Wandering through Nessebar’s narrow cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time. The town is famed for its impressive collection of medieval churches—more than 40 once stood here. Among the most notable are the Church of Christ Pantocrator and the Church of St. John the Baptist, showcasing intricate stone and brickwork that reflects Byzantine and Bulgarian architectural styles. The town’s wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries add to its romantic ambiance, many of which have been converted into charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. Despite its small size, Nessebar offers a rich cultural experience with folklore performances, craft markets, and local cuisine, especially fresh seafood and traditional Bulgarian dishes. Surrounded by the sea, the peninsula provides stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere. Its proximity to the modern resort of Sunny Beach makes it a popular day-trip destination, but its quieter pace makes it perfect for relaxed exploration. Old Town Nessebar is a place where the past meets the present—a coastal gem where ancient ruins, medieval churches, and vibrant local life coexist beautifully. It’s a must-visit for anyone seeking history, culture, and coastal beauty.

Nice historic place full of interesting buildings but be beware of the hard sell by locals. The views over the sea are impressive on a sunny day. It is a UNESCO site so prices are a bit more expensive.
Mark B — Google review
Wow, What a beautiful town! As the name suggests"old town Nessebar" is an old town with beautiful ruins, charming buildings and full of history, a real shoppers paradise. It is a maze of tight alleyways each filled with an array of shops selling wonderful Bulgarian items from magnets to alcohol, pieces of art, clothing and lots more. Each turn leads you further into the maze which eventually opens to larger open spaces filled with more shops, restaurants and beautiful historical architecture. I was particularly impressed with the different artists dotted around proudly displaying their pieces for sale at very reasonable prices, and so couldn't resist the urge to purchase a couple from a very friendly local artist. We could have spent several days walking through this town, and the sights are truly breathtaking from all parts. We would definitely return to Bulgaria to visit here again. People with mobility issues may struggle with the large cobbled walkways, steps and its mostly uphill, I don't recall seeing an easier walking route.

Old Town Nessebar is one of the best locations from Nessebar city, Bulgaria. This island is situated on the Black Sea and represents the opportunity of Bulgaria. You can find a lot of restaurants with specific food and a lot of stores. You can come with your car because you can find the parking spot. History is a part of the owner and this place remains in our hearts. The food is amazing and they have a small beer factory. Everything is amazing and is very nice and clear. Enjoy one of the best locations from Nessebar.

Old town Nessebar is a place you must visit if you are nearby! It is so beautiful with old architecture and local shops and taverns, paintings, handmade products and lots of things to see! Chill place and family friendly one! Some things to make sure you know before visit: -its a bit expensive -overcrowded at the evenings -parking slots are cut and you have to come earlier to park in a paid parking or park your car in the new town and then come by foot as there can be extreme queues of cars Enjoy and spare at least a day to see everything - it's not big, but it's worth!!!

Embark on a romantic escape by starting your day at the enchanting Restaurant White Rose, where a cozy atmosphere and local flavors await. This charming eatery offers an array of multicultural dishes, from hearty Bulgarian beef stews to flaky Italian calzones, all served in generous portions at reasonable prices. Don't forget to indulge in their delightful ice cream sundaes for dessert!
Off season and they were still open. Light meal and perfect. Shopska salad, chicken soup and garlic bread. Mmm. Was very tasty and large portions. With beer. Decent pricing at 15BGN for all. Highly recommend!

The restaurant " White Rose ", Nesebar is one of few that work whole year. We were looking for lunch. Surprisingly, the restaurant had guests on almost all tables. We have been seated immediately. The waitresses were very kind and gave us the menu immediately. The restaurant offers a daily menu for dining; It comprises about 20 meals, so we could choose from soups, mains, salads and dessert. The service was quick, food was delicious, particularly chicken and spinach soup, rollo Stephany, fish with salad, and garlic bread. The restaurant has friendly staff. I recommend it for families with children as it has kids' meals. We definitely will visit The White Rose again for dining.

Fantastic meal after waiting 10mins in a queue, we had plain muscles, Greek salad, prawns and Sea bass, 2 glasses of red wine and 1 draught beer. All were excellent fantastic value at 55BL + a well deserved tip. Please try this establishment out you won’t be disappointed, fantastic service too, we were not pushed out either after our meal as more people were queuing to get in. This has been edited as we went again last night and the food was fantastic however once we had finished our food we were asked to leave as the queue outside was too big and there were children in the queue, we still had drinks to drink. So be careful to eat and drink at the same time otherwise you’d be asked to leave. Not a good way to keep customers so we will be giving this one a miss. 🥲

Great atmosphere and fast service—the food arrived extremely quickly and tasted nice. The prices are much lower compared to some other restaurants in the area. I would highly recommend the garlic bread, shopska salad, and chicken kavarma. Highly recommended for a quick bite if you are in the area. Lunch menu is available (it tends to get really busy during lunchtime).
Aleksandr S — Google review
Lovely atmosphere, generous portions! The food was delicious 😋 All the tables were taken, but the wait wasn’t long and the dishes were prepared quickly.

Excellent value for money! The dishes are delicious, generously portioned, and offer a great variety. Service is quick, and the staff is kind and attentive. It’s a popular spot, so you often have to wait in line for a table, but it’s definitely worth it. Card payment is accepted, which is a big plus.

Amazing service on an off-season evening. I had a very early dinner but it was fantastic and fast. Had Sicily salad, Bulgarian potato pie, and baked custard for dessert. All so well done. The white wine is also excellent. Affordable, great portions, friendly staff, and if you sit outside, a cute neighborhood cat. The menu was expansive and did I mention affordable? I will be going back during my short stay. Very impressive. They even have non-alcoholic cocktails.

Old Sailor is a seafood restaurant known for its quality service and a variety of dishes featuring seafood and fish specialties. The menu includes shrimp, highly praised sea bass, as well as lamb, chicken with pineapple and curry, along with an interesting selection of local wines. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating options. Visitors have praised the friendly staff, reasonable prices, great food quality, and the picturesque view of Nesebar's old history.
Wandered into this place by chance, we left full, happy, and in love with the seafood platter! The staff were wholesome and lighthearted, like dinner with old friends. Beautiful spot, beautiful and delicious food, I definitely recommend a vist

Delicious food with a great service and location! This restaurant has never disappointed. Few restaurants can maintain the same amazing food quality from year to year, and Old Sailor has done it multiple years in a row. Personally, I have been visiting each year since 2021 and the food has been very good every single year! My favorite shrimp and mussels.
Karina S — Google review
The seafood is delicious. We had steamed mussels with bread to sop up the juices and the squid rings. Both outstanding. But you will leave with a strong garlic flavor. Not unpleasant for me.

We are on a family holiday in Bulgaria for the first time. A friend of mine said this place was a must go. So we went to celebrate my sons 10th birthday. He's a Seafood lover and we all loved the food. It was a party of 6 adults and 7 children. We ordered a huge selection and the bill was a very reasonable 580 lev. Would go again if I find myself in the location again. Highly recommended

This is the best tasting restaurant ever!!! The staff and Chef of this restaurant are so polite and nice. Each time they give me a smile into my face. Old Nessebar, situated on a rocky peninsula extending into the Black Sea, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination in Bulgaria. The town is renowned for its picturesque wooden houses and churches. Connected to the mainland by a man-made isthmus, Old Nessebar offers stunning views of the sea from its charming restaurants and traditional shops. Visitors can enjoy delicious seafood dishes and European cuisine while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
The place is wonderfull. At the terrace you can see the whole sea while enjoying your food. The service is perfect, dishes are served quickly, at the same time. Food is also delicious. Fish is great, soft, not dried. For kids pancakes with chocolate are the choice. We have found the restaurant much too late...

Really nice place, crowded, but it’s a visited/touristic spot thus this was expected. We really liked the streets and arhitecture, we went there everyday to discover something new. Nice to take walks and see the old buildings and ruins. We ignored the shops with souvenirs as they could kind of ruin the vibe. Totally one of the nicest places from the Bulgarian sea side resorts
Steflix — Google review
If you want to visit the old town to see nice and unique architecture and ancient style streets - don't bother. Plenty of tables selling all kinds of cheap colourful plastic stuff... toys hanging everywhere, very crowded... especially if you are visiting with kids - you could not see any architecture.

I did not spend the night in the old town, but I have bought souvenirs from various shops. It is very beautiful, the prices are OK and the personnel was very polite and helpful. It was a worthwhile experience!

Very bad expensive. Refrigerator is not connected to the permanent electricity of the hotel. It is connected to your room key. Means when you are out, the refrigerator doesn't work. The worst hotels in the world don't work like that. The size of WC is tiny: 22x26 cm!!!! It is a torture using the WC. The blankets have no cover and when I asked for that, they simply ignored me. Never again this place. Never.
Syrusphoenix — Google review
The whole island a massive tourist trap. We managed to find only two streets that were not flooded with booths selling unrelated crap (Lafufu dools, Pokemon key rings, Brainrot towels). The vendors cover the houses with accessories that have nothing to do with the place. People use loudspeakers to promote their stuff. Some walk up to you trying to sell you some jewelry. My whole family were disgusted. We came for UNESCO sites and we're badly disappointed.

If you are staying nearby a visit to Old Nessebar is a must. We stayed in Sveti Vlas and got the boat over, which was nice too. It's a nice relaxed environment with some great history and nice places to eat too. We went in June and was told it got really busy in July and August, with narrow streets it could get very crowded.

Plakamoto in Nessebar offers stunning coastal views and a diverse menu featuring everything from steak and chips to sophisticated fish dishes. The restaurant provides an ideal setting with seating options between shade and sunshine, creating a charming atmosphere under a huge fig tree. Guests can enjoy friendly service and unique offerings like fig liqueur and fig ice cream made from the tree's fruits. While some visitors have noted slightly higher prices, many praise the delicious food, beautiful location, and attentive waitstaff.
We were theere for lunch. Entire family including 2 years old kid. The whole experience was great, it was a wonderful way to try new items. The soups and the kavarna were probably my favourites, and the desert though, it was possibly the lightest and perfect 'melt in your mouth' I've ever had. On top of all this, the service was phenomenal and our waiter helped us choose and provided great detail of each dish. I would definitely come back!!!! And so we did a few times already

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with comfortable seating indoors and out and highchairs available. The beer here is reasonably priced, making it the perfect place to enjoy your meal with friends.
Wonderful place. They always manage to find us a table next to the windows so we have the best view. Even if there are no available tables, they would take our phone number and call us as soon as one is available. How incredible is that! When we visit Nesebar we always go there. We waited for 20-30 minutes outside, while the wannabe waiter "smooth talked" us into waiting for just 10 minutes for a table, and when there was an available one, they didn't let us through, but let a group of 6 in front of us (who came much later than we did). Just for the sake of making a little more money off of them. Doesn't deserve the 4.4 stars, only interested in gain and no service. Wholeheartedly do not recommend especially if full.
