Nuka

$$$$expensive
Japanese restaurant
Nuka is a sleek Japanese venue offering a diverse menu of small plates, sushi, specialty rolls, and a variety of drinks. Located in the sleepy North Shore town of Haiku, it's popular among locals for its seriously fresh sushi and izakaya-style eats. The restaurant serves unique twists on traditional rolls like the Lollipop roll and offers Asian-inspired dishes such as wasabi fries.
As we went to the Road of Hana to explore the Twin Falls we discovered this Japanese restaurant was on the way there. Food was excellent. Cute little place. Staffs were wonderful. Sashimi was fresh. Our tummy satisfied.
Amenita T — Google review
Nuka in Haiku offers a cozy, stylish setting with a menu that leans into Japanese classics. While the sushi and rolls were just okay — fresh but not particularly memorable — the meat skewers really stood out. Perfectly grilled and full of flavor, they were a great surprise and easily one of the best parts of the meal. The real highlight, though, was the miso cod - buttery, tender, and deeply satisfying. It alone is worth coming for. Service was solid and the space has a nice ambiance, making it a good choice if you’re in the area and looking for a relaxed dinner with some standout bites.
JonLuca D — Google review
Delicious sushi spot upcountry. My first time dining at Nuka was outstanding. The highly quality of the fish was noticeable. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. We sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were very warm and friendly. The service from our waitress was okay- she wasn’t the friendliest. Our food came out quickly after placing our order which was awesome because we were hungry! We didn’t have a reservation upon arrival and waited about 15 minutes for a party of two. Its indoor dining only and the space is on the smaller side. There is sushi bar seating as well (about 10 spots). We enjoyed the ceviche and mocktails from their evening specials menu, along with the dragonfly roll, maguro nigiri and ahi salad from their regular menu. We’ll definitely be back.
Melinda — Google review
Dined here many many times. The food was always amazing, some of my favorite cocktails, and there has almost always been high quality fish. The waitlist operation is inconvenient, but if you’re willing to get through that then bear in mind you will be treated unkindly by the servers. On multiple occasions I have had horrible service. It’s hard to say how many times i’ve actually enjoyed any service i’ve received here aside from the people that ran the food. Servers are miserable, rude, stuck up, and they do not have any sense of recovery after being rude. It’s unfortunate that I don’t have it in me to leave a bad tip so i’ll always leave 20%, but after my last negative interaction, I will never be returning. It’s unfortunate as the food and drinks are great, sushi chefs are talented, the food runners are nice and friendly, but your server staff is consistently rude and ruins the entire experience. Don’t come here if you want decent service.

Before Nuka, this place used to be a Napa store and before that a mini market store. ATMOSPHERE: They're located in a free-standing building on Haiku Road just across the street from the Haiku Cannery mall with lots of free parking. The Asian decor fits the restaurant perfect. It's a small open-air room that fits maybe 50 people max, with regular tables and sushi bar seating. RESERVATIONS: They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait during peak dinner hours especially on the weekend. FAVE FOODS: Karaage Chicken Very small portion but very really good. The chicken was very tender and the light karaage batter was delish. Chicken Katsu Donburi I am a fan of this place after eating this dish! The rice is laced with a sweet/salty soy flavor, topped with a over-hard fried egg cooked in the same sauce, topped with deep fried & super tender chicken katsu strips and finished off with thinly sliced nori. DEELISH! Tempura Shrimp Udon I simply love noodles, so this was an easy decision for my second time here. The broth is a bit sweet but very good (I am NOT a fan of sweet broths but this was an exception). Accompanied by a generous amount of shrimp, green bean, onion and mushroom tempura. Ahi Katsu Donburi Delicious rice dish flavored with a sweet-soy seasoning which is topped with an over-hard fried egg, and chunks of breaded and seared ahi. I personally would've liked to have the ahi cooked all the way through which would make the dish more visually pleasing, though it's still very good overall. Portion size is perfect. SERVICE: Everyone has been great all these years. OVERALL: Maui's best Japanese restaurant.
Maui T — Google review
Food is always delicious, definitely my favorite restaurant on Maui… Our service last night went above and beyond, had a great time and enjoyed every bit of it.
Lelia — Google review
I've been to Nuka twice. Once a few years ago (it was excellent), and this past weekend (it was not). Service: We showed up a few minutes after they opened and scored one of the few open tables. We sat for 10-15 minutes waiting to place a drink order. What we later learned was our server was busy with a table seated after us. I had to ask a different employee for our server. She eventually arrived and didn't apologize for the delay. The service from this point was ok...clumsy, not horrible, but def. not gracious. Cocktails were delivered with no napkin to absorb the sweat off the glass. I've worked the front of the house in fine dining and It felt like the staff receive minimal training, and are delivering food as they would bowls of cereal to their children. Lots of staff only carrying 1-2 items at a time - ie a lack of efficiency. Food: This was better. We tried the miso butterfish, a tempura appetizer on the specials menu, and a variety of sashimi and sushi. These were well prepared, and made up for feeling like they didn't care if we were there or not. Salmon sashimi was not fresh, and remained on the platter after it was sampled. The remainder was fresh and tasty. Summary: Due to it's location and status as the only sushi restaurant for miles, I think management has decided they are busy and customer service doesn't need to be prioritized. That's true until it isn't, and competition appears. Our bill for two came to nearly $250. Did we feel like we got our money's worth and look forward to returning? No.
MauiCounty G — Google review
I literally flew a few thousand miles to eat here again! Bradley.. great to see you again and you always blow it out of the water! Food & service at the sushi bar were outstanding.. if you have ever been here before you know that this is an experience in itself.

Pauwela Cannery

Mentioned on

Shopping mall
Pauwela Cannery is a hidden gem located just off the Hana Highway in Maui. While it's popular among locals, it has plenty to offer for visitors as well. The cannery houses various businesses and artisan workshops, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can explore the diverse shops, including a bakery with top-notch treats and the first Dakine store. Additionally, there's a funky hardware store, a small grocery store, and even a spot for getting your board repaired.
Great atmosphere with excellent couple of shops built into the cannery area. Nestled into a neighborhood on Maui, but right off one of the main roads. The bakery was top notch, we visited every day of our trip. It is also home the the first Dakine store, which is a great visit if you have ever used, worn and just wondered about their products.
Edward ( — Google review
The hardware store is great, really helpful staff. Baked on Maui has great food and prices are not outrageous.
Daniel J — Google review
If there's a better spot in all of Haiku, I don't know. The store's great (a whole shelf of Argentinian delights! On an island! In the jungle! IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC), and you can get lost walking around the hallways and visiting the artisan workshops. I love hanging out here.
Emiliano S — Google review
Baked on Maui is delicious. Hardware store is funky and useful. Gramps is the best place around to get your board repaired! Has a small grocery store too and other kine stuffs.
Brooke M — Google review
I've been going to the cannery for over 30 years ( there used to be a video store back in da day) they provide a service by renting out spaces to businesses, artists, they also used to have da best dumpster diving until they locked their dumpsters. I hate people that make and leave a mess when diving, or all those prior people who have sued companies for their own clumsiness, they are the reason so many businesses lock their dumpsters. Used to be you could furnish your house out of what people threw away...Just saying..
Julie N — Google review
Good product good people that's it 😀

Its an old cannery full of surf shops and woodshop. Not very exciting. There is a new store and a decent food spot.

Haiku Marketplace

Mentioned on
2 lists
Bus stop
Haiku Marketplace, situated at the Haiku Cannery, serves as the central point of the Haiku Community. It houses a grocery store, hardware store, restaurants and food trucks, a bike shop, fitness centers, day spas and more. The historic pineapple cannery has been transformed into a bustling hub over 37 years. Visitors can enjoy diverse dining options including food trucks. Additionally, with the adjacent refurbished Cannery across Kokomo Road, one can find everything they need in downtown Haiku.
Haiku Marketplace is a wonderful collection of shops, services, and restaurants located in a historic old pineapple cannery in the heart of Haiku Maui. I've seen it transform from basically an abandoned old shell into a thriving community over the past 37 years. We love that there are so many good dining options here in Haiku nowadays, including various food trucks. With the adjacent refurbished Cannery across Kokomo Road, you can pretty much find everything you need right here in downtown Haiku. The population is rapidly growing in this part of Maui, and there will be more shops opening up to serve the needs of the community. Plenty of free parking and easy access... and now in 2018 you can plug in an electric car to charge while you eat at Colleen's.

Ho'okipa Beach Park

Mentioned on
1 list
Park
Outdoor Activities
Ho'okipa Beach Park is a spacious state park and surfing spot with a beautiful white sand beach, picnic areas, and pavilions. It's located along Hana Highway and is famous for windsurfing and contemporary surfing. Visitors can watch surfers from the Hookipa Lookout or enjoy the beach where Hawaiian green sea turtles often come to rest on the shore.
Cool beach to watch the surfers and the wind surfers. Less so for swimming. The bonus as you get to see lots of sea turtles. Nobody follows the rules and doesn’t keep a 10 foot distance as they should even though the section is cordoned off. So sad to see that people can not read simple instructions. Well worth going to this cool beach. Free parking and lots of locals so it must be good right?!
Samir B — Google review
Good parking and nice to sit and watch the surfers. It’s beautiful to look at because of the turtles and the ocean! But it is not a swimming beach. And it is good for surfing only if you are a well-seasoned surfer. Lots of rocks at the shore!
Rovi B — Google review
Beautiful beach to see the sea turtles, watch surfers in action and just enjoy what the ocean has to offer. A little too rough for snorkeling or a relaxing dip, but fun for buggie boarding and offers a pretty view for the sunset.
Arielle P — Google review
Great beach. The ability to stay up top or go down on the beach is really nice. There are showers here. There are lots of surfers and people who know where they are going and what they're doing. Still great to visit and just chill.
Natalie C — Google review
Very strong winds!! Amazing views of powerful waves. Lots of surfers and other water activities. Popular area! And the best part of it all... Numerous sea turtles enjoying the warm sun in the late afternoon into the evening on the beach! A must visit if in Maui!
The C — Google review
Good parking, easy to walk down. We went just to see the turtles resting on the beach which was easy because there are a ton just laying there plain to see. Photos are good to take and the beach looked clean although we didn’t go on it. Not much else to say, but it is cool to see all the turtles just hanging out if you’re in the area.
Amber L — Google review
Nice long park along the ocean with some beach but the environment lends itself to attract the surfing crowd. Lot of boards and windsurfing taking place with a pretty consistent surf coming off the windward side of Maui. There are bathrooms and shelters available from the sun. The park is right outside Paia at the start of the Road to Hana. Plenty of parking if the beach area is not overly crowded. Enjoy the experience!
Mike S — Google review
Went here at noon time. Only checked the lookout. The view is pretty. Saw many turtles on the beach. Many surfers on the sea. Parking lot is full when we arrived but not hard to wait for someone to leave.

Leilani Farm Sanctuary

Mentioned on

Wildlife rescue service

Farms
If you're an animal enthusiast visiting Maui, a guided tour of Leilani Farm Sanctuary is an absolute must. Nestled in Haiku on the North Shore, this non-profit refuge was founded by Laurelee Blanchard to provide a safe haven for animals that have faced abuse and abandonment. The sanctuary thrives thanks to its dedicated volunteers who pour their hearts into caring for the diverse array of animals, including countless cats and other rescued creatures.
This was one of the most magical experiences I’ve had on Maui. The serenity and peacefulness of the location surpassed my expectations. All the animals were so well taken care of and friendly. It truly was a piece of heaven on earth.
Kathryn S — Google review
This was an amazing experience! Cannot recommend it enough. Super fun to get to see such an authentic lifestyle and meet animals who are so grateful to be rescued! You get to see so many things you cannot find anywhere else!
Kaitlyn H — Google review
This was a cool experience off the beaten path. These animals are all rescues that are cared for by volunteers and the owner of the property. For $50 each they take you on a tour of the property and teach you about the animals and where they were rescued from. Then they allow you to stay and meet the animals and spend time with them. Ample parking, portable bathroom in the parking lot. There were guinea pigs, tortoises, turkeys, cats, goats, chickens and more.
Max M — Google review
The cutest and family friendly animal sanctuary ever. Brought my two kids with me and we absolutely loved our tour host, she was the sweetest and the animals And the entire place is amazing
L — Google review
I cannot imagine a more serene and beautiful place than this animal sanctuary. So many friendly animals and a wonderful tour lead by Danielle, who described each animal's story of how they ended up at the sanctuary and taught us about many of the native plants growing there.
Brian T — Google review
We took a farm tour with Danielle and she was so friendly and knowledgeable! We loved meeting so many animals and exploring the beautiful grounds of the sanctuary.
Elle B — Google review
Fun for all ages, especially for anyone who has not had much experience with farm animals. Our guide Danielle was exceptionally patient with the guests and radiated genuine love and care for each of the animals. We stayed long past the tour to cuddle cats and take photos on the stunningly beautiful property.
Jennifer — Google review
Our best adventure while we were on the Island. Cannot stop talking about Snuggles and Sweetie Pie. Any animal lover needs to visit and see what these wonderful people are doing for so many animals.

Hana Lava Tube

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Located off the Hana Highway near Hana Town, the Hana Lava Tube (also known as Ka'eleku Caverns) is a fascinating underground wonder that offers visitors a glimpse into Maui's geological history. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, this rocky tube extends for several miles, with a half-mile section open to the public. As you explore this cave trail, educational signs highlight various lava formations such as contraction cracks, stalagmites, and stalactites.
Was so cool to explore the cave on our own. Very steep stairs to get in they supply you with flashlights and it has placards explaining the history of the cave. very neat to come see where lava once was on the island. Not something to do with small children due to the steep stairs. is 15 dollars a person to go into the cave
Kelly S — Google review
This was one of the coolest places we visited while exploring the island on our trip to Maui! It was cool to learn about the lava, flow of chocolatey water that used to exist until the collapse that took place at one end, which stopped the flow of water. The ticket prices were quite reasonable, I believe $15.00 for adults. the staff was friendly, helpful and informative. the park area was well maintained and clean. It was really cool to read the signs along the way and learn about the history of the Hana Lava Tube and how it originated. (Be cautious while exploring, some of the pathway/steps can get a little steep. We had no issues, but small children or people with any balnce issues might find it challenging to navigate.) Again, We loved checking it out, Definitely worth a visit.
Rob V — Google review
We loved this lava tube! It was so cool inside! It’s a self-guided tour inside, but they give you flashlights to use inside. There are so many colors inside - it’s beautiful! I’ve been in a lot of caves before, so they’re not “new and exciting” for me, but this one was truly enjoyable.
Rebecca S — Google review
I had no idea this place existed, and I was born and raised on the rock! We found it by accident while searching for some gardens located way down the dirt road that ended up being closed. I for one was excited to see this. Seeing and walking through an actual lava tube which once flowed with hot magma is fascinating to me! No reservations are required. You pay your $12.50 (2014 price), you're given a brief explanation of the tube, an LED flashlight, and you're on your self-guided way. THE TUBE: The entrance was super exciting. The pitch dark black hole adorned by ferns drops about 20 feet into the ground. You're immediately greeted with a temperature perfect 70% humidity atmosphere and is about 5-7 degrees cooler than the air outside. There's no smell inside. You will be dripped on by rain water seeping through the ground above. The ground is very uneven but there are handrails throughout to guide and help you. Anyone with difficulty walking should not do this. There are signs throughout that explain the different floors, walls and ceilings of the tube. Near the end of the tube is an intimidating low-hanging ceiling that requires you to duck down and walk under. Here is where you can see the stalactites up close. They're nothing like you'd see in other caves as they're small and look like melted Hershey Kisses. Soon after this is a vent that opens up to the land above, letting in sunshine as if you're going to heaven or something lol. The attraction ends a few feet later - it goes on for longer but this is where these folks' property line ends, so you have to go back. TI LEAF MAZE: I was hesitant to go through it but my friends wanted to. I had fun. It was longer than it looks. I have no idea how you begin to design something like that. Do it! What else are you going to do in Hana lol?! TIP: There are no creatures in the tube, except for worms that dangle from the ceiling, but we didn't see any. The worker also stated that she's never seen any during the 5 years she's been there. I'm a bit claustrophobic and had no problem in here. OVERALL: Very cool attraction to see.
Maui T — Google review
Unique experience. About $15 a person in 2025. Worth it. Takes about 30 mins or so to see the whole cave. Really beautiful and fascinating if you read the plaques. I've never seen such beautiful starry night looking bacteria on cave ceilings before! Such a great experience. Easy walking/hiking. All ages should be able. You need to be able to take steps and walk with a flash light.
Porter C — Google review
What a great little adventure! Close the the state park and great for most ages.. I love the history and the go at your own pace. The staff was friendly and super accommodating
Jessica N — Google review
Super cool experience! It’s very interesting to see what the earth can do naturally and the signs explain everything to you really easily. I definitely learned something new! However, $15 seemed a bit high just to walk through a cool cave, and it’s privately owned so it’s not like the money is going to support Maui, which is why I took off one point. There are restrooms (ports potties) and be prepared to have a slight trouble parking. Had honestly an amazing time though and was amazed!
Sophie — Google review
Took about 30 mins round trip. They supply flashlights and it was $31 for two people. Amazing experience. Be cautious if you are taller(6’3 +) as they were some low hanging spots that I banged my head on.

Kaumahina State Wayside Park

Park
Nature & Parks
State Parks
Kaumahina State Wayside Park is a must-visit pitstop on your journey to Hana, offering not just restrooms and picnic tables but also breathtaking views of Honomanu Bay and its dramatic cliffs. This scenic overlook provides an ideal spot to take a break, enjoy the stunning ocean vistas, and even catch glimpses of black sand beaches. While the facilities are generally clean, it's wise to bring your own paper products as they may run low.
Clear signage with an easy off and on to the Hana Hwy makes this an easily accessible stop to stretch and use the facilities. Take the short path up the cliff side for some great bay vistas. Then pop back into your car because you still have quite a ways to go!
SMorris T — Google review
A very enjoyable quick pit stop on your way to Hana. There are bathroom facilities that were fully stocked with toilet paper. The view is right a the parking lot, so no need to walk unless you’d like a bit higher up of a view, as there is a path along the cliff for another viewpoint. It is a truly spectacular view. Free parking is very handy. Overall this is a great place for a photo op as well as a bathroom break.
Emma A — Google review
Clear signage and pull off. Short walk to Cliff side view of the bay. Bathrooms are provided. Breathtaking views.
Ben P — Google review
A very scenic viewpoint you shouldn't miss when driving on the scenic Road to Hana. There is plenty of free parking.
Walter R — Google review
Beautiful viewpoint. The park is open 07:00-19:00. There are public washrooms in the place and picnic area. Free parking spots in the place. Highly recommended.
Gal N — Google review
A great stop to see ocean & waterfalls. The bathroom was clean, but they ran out of paper towels and toilet paper. Lesson learned: bring your town toilet paper when going to rural areas b/c many public bathrooms will be out of paper products.
Patricia C — Google review
Rest stop on the road to Hana with a beautiful view. There's a restroom and ample parking. My wife and I stopped there on our way to Hana and again on the way back. It's worth the stop.
Phil P — Google review
What an added attraction to view such a beautiful ocean scenery and Hana town from this lookout spot. Tables to sit and rest before continuing journey to Hana. Restrooms are a plus. Make sure you bring sanitizer/hand soap as none provided.

Makapipi Falls

Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Nestled along the scenic Hana Highway in Maui, Makapipi Falls offers a truly distinctive experience for waterfall enthusiasts. Unlike other waterfalls on the island, this 40-foot cascade allows visitors to gaze down from above as it plunges into serene pools below. Accessible via a small pull-out near the one-lane bridge crossing Makapipi Stream, it's an easy stop that promises stunning views and fantastic photo opportunities.
Makapipi Falls is one of the many stunning waterfalls along the Road to Hana on Maui’s northeastern coastline. It’s located near mile marker 25 on the Hana Highway (Hwy 360) and is a beautiful but often overlooked stop. Key Features of Makapipi Falls: Unique Perspective: What makes Makapipi Falls special is the vantage point. Unlike many other waterfalls on the Road to Hana, where you view the falls from the base, Makapipi Falls is viewed from above. The waterfall flows underneath the bridge you’ll be driving on, and from this position, you can look down into a pool below where the water cascades over a lava rock ledge. Height: The waterfall is around 30–40 feet in height, making it a medium-sized waterfall compared to others in the area. It flows into a serene pool surrounded by lush greenery. Accessibility: Location: Makapipi Falls is located near mile marker 25 on the Hana Highway, shortly after the Nahiku Road turnoff and before you reach the small town of Hana. Since the falls are right under the bridge, it’s an easy stop on the roadside. Parking: There’s no designated parking lot for Makapipi Falls, but there is enough space near the bridge to pull over briefly. Be careful of traffic, as the Hana Highway is narrow and winding. Viewing Point: The best view is from the bridge itself, where you can safely stand and look down into the pool. You’ll get a direct view of the waterfall spilling over the ledge into the pool below.
Exploring J — Google review
Nice falls. Parking can be tough. Best photos can be taken from the bridge but it's on the road! Watch for traffic if you choose to do this!
Martin C — Google review
This was not a great spot to stop at to see the "Waterfall". We ended up finding a spot to pull over and we had to go over the barrier on the side of the cliff to view this very small spout of water. Do not recommend stopping for this one.
Jason Z — Google review
This was a stop on the road to Hana. It was not a suggestion of a stopping point but totally worth it. Easy to access the waterfall just be careful it's a long drop but totally safe to get pretty close to the edge.
Jill H — Google review
Makapipi Falls is one of the nice waterfalls you will get to see while driving the road to Hana. There isn't much parking in the area so you will have to walk down the tiny road if you want to get a photo. I parked a ways up on the road and was able to capture a photo via drone.
Jamie S — Google review
Easy stop off just on one side of the bridge that runs over the top of the falls. Not the easiest to get good pictures of, but a great looking and pretty impressive waterfall!
David O — Google review
If you're heading to hana, you need to go past the bridge and park in the small parking area on the immediate right. Cross the street there and walk to where you get a view of under the bridge. It's beautiful. Not obviously easy to hike to, but since it's toward the end of the road to hana, you might be happy to just look at it from afar and not have to hike to enjoy it.
Tony C — Google review
Very beautiful falls, has a pull over across the road to park. Falls can be seen from above or along a side road. Easy walk to falls from parking area. Sometimes they have coconuts for sale there.

Nahiku Viewpoint And Wayside

Park
Sights & Landmarks
Nahiku Viewpoint And Wayside is a hidden gem located off the road to Hana. After an 8-minute drive, visitors can park their cars and take a scenic 5-minute walk to reach this picturesque spot. The area offers stunning views and features a charming small freshwater pond or waterfall, making it a worthwhile stop for nature enthusiasts.
It is easy to miss this road unless you are looking for it. Long drive down and then park and walk the rest of the way. It is totally worth it!!!! Fantastic views!
StorminNorminO — Google review
Watch for Nahiku road on your left when driving towards Hana. It’s around 8 minutes drive then leave your car in the lot and walk another 5 minutes for some great views and a small freshwater pond/waterfall.
Peter S — Google review
Nahiku road is beautiful to drive, but locals no longer tolerate tourists. Although the wayside and viewpoint are on public land there is no longer parking, this includes spots that were formerly accessible in front of the church and a few spots under the banyan tree. There are no parking signs that the locals put up surrounding all sides at the end of the road with multiples spray painted messages that essentially said, "no tourists, locals only, respect our neighborhood." We were disappointed, but respectfully turned around and headed back to Hana. If you hike east of wai'anapanapa state park you will get just as many breathtaking views of the coastline, minus the waterfall you would have seen/swam in at nahiku.

Colleen's At the Cannery

$$$$affordable
American restaurant
Nestled in a former pineapple cannery, Colleen's At the Cannery is a hidden gem in Haiku-Pauwela, Maui. This cozy spot offers organic New American cuisine with three hearty meals daily and a popular happy hour. Despite its unassuming exterior, it transforms into an intimate setting at night, perfect for enjoying martinis and fresh fish dishes.
It was my first time having lunch here, and we picked a good time. We got there at 1:00 and got a corner "booth". Sarah and Josie both helped us out with taking our food and drink orders and bringing them out to us. Miles made us a delicious grilled Mahi salad, the best chicken salad sandwich I can remember having, and a grilled chicken sandwich. Oh, and the ginger mint tea was absolutely refreshing. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and it was a very nice time.

This is the perfect spot to fuel your adventures off of the road to Hana. It provides good eats for breakfast (served until 11:30 AM) and lunch. I've had both. You can't go wrong with a breakfast sandwich or a hamburger. The portions are generous so it's a good way to energize either before or after hitting the trails or just exhausted after the winding road. Seating is limited and everything is made to order so you'll want to be patient. Enjoy an iced coffee and company while you wait.
Brent V — Google review
Nice place with good burgers, especially the fries were amazing! Veggie options available too. Friendly service
Michi K — Google review
Tucked in 'downtown' Haiku (Country vibe), this restaurant is a locals' favourite but visitors are certainly welcome because the entire staff is friendly, cheerful and welcoming. The food is solid, it has everything one can ask for. Bar area is comfy and lively. If you happen to cruise by the town of Haiku, make sure to stop by for a meal (breakfast, dinner) or great Happy Hour.
JAMES K — Google review
We stopped in to see the area and found this place. Very quaint and friendly. We ordered a tuna melt and the upcountry beef burger. Both were perfectly prepared and fresh. We shared an order of fries as the portion was very generous. Love the crispy battered fries. We picked up a couple of pastries for the road as they looked great and tasted just as great for breakfast the next day. Highly recommended.
Shane C — Google review
Simply great. The service was super funny and the burgers were amazing. I’ve never had fries this good. We’ll definitely be back :)
Phine D — Google review
Easy seating, cas atmosphere. We were stuffed before our main course. Gotta get the mushrooms, OMG! The regular and sweet potato fries are perfect! Large portion to $ ratio, too!!!
Suze Y — Google review
Solid breakfast choices - friendly service - and great vibe all around. This is a "locals" spot - unpretentious and chill - Colleen's is always our first choice for breakfast.

Maui Kombucha

$$$$affordable
Vegan restaurant
Maui Kombucha is a local-chain cafe that offers a diverse menu of healthy eats and drinks. They specialize in kombucha, with various flavors available on tap, along with dairy-free superfood smoothies, juices, and wellness shots. The vegan menu features raw food options as well as cooked vegan dishes made from local, gluten-free, and organic ingredients. The menu changes daily but includes items like Kale Chips and Cauliflower Shawarma Tacos.
Amazing healthy food ❣️ wonderful community. I love to go there daily if possible. Thank you Jen and Chris for your, yummy healthy food, and place💜🙏🤗
Galit B — Google review
Awesome place. Delicious Acai bowls ($18 or so). Kombucha ok.
Nina M — Google review
Wanted to like this place since it’s near my house. Unfortunately, they have political misinformation and propaganda all over the restaurant so I definitely will not be spending my money to support them pushing false information that’s dangerous to our community. Additionally, the employees are rude and do not speak to you when you walk in.
Abi B — Google review
Not bad at all for the vegan variety they have! The parking is just around the corner from the place and this place was not hard to find. The place is kinda hippy and almost feels like a hippy pub but people were friendly when we went in! I did want to get a kombucha but it was a little too strong for me. They do give out samples before you buy a cup! The food was good and very filling. The only downside of the oat bagel was it got very dry abd crumbly. It could have used something to keep it little more moist. Overall the food was not bad :)
Yeshaswini — Google review
Every time I fly from the Bay Area to visit family and friends in Maui, I try to start the day with a BoochBuzz from Maui Booch. We have flights and accommodations reserved for a mid-June visit, and our rental house is just a short walk up Kokomo. Maui Booch, we're coming back and bring more family to become vacation regulars.
Addy A — Google review
What can I say about this place: they are just the nicest folks ever. The service was solid. And the booch was creative. (If you cant decide, have a flight!) We drove quite a ways to stop and see them. Next time I hope we have time to stay a bit and enjoy the food. There seems be a wide variety of things to nibble, drink, and eat. The nuts were great too!
Nickawanna S — Google review
Definitely this is the best kombucha on tap at Maui island. The vegan food and delicious vegan cakes and the chocolate bars are a must have! The most friendly and helpful stuff ever. this location is clean has a good location in Haiku town.
Ibiza H — Google review
The kombucha is delicious! I got the guava lime, she got the mango jasmine. We shared an Immortality Bowl. When we came most of their food menu was not available, but the bowl was delicious so that's ok. They also will fill any container you have with kombucha, so come prepared so you can get a couple of gallons. I'm very glad we went out of our way to explore this little place.

Veg Out

Mentioned on

$$$$cheap
Vegetarian restaurant
Veg Out is a laid-back cafe in Haiku, Hawaii that has been offering vegetarian and vegan dishes to locals and visitors since 2000. The casual spot serves up an international menu of meatless options for dining in or takeout. Customers can enjoy a variety of dishes such as the Muffuletta Sandwich, featuring tofu breaded with nutritional yeast on a focaccia roll with olive spread, lettuce, tomato, and onion.
Looks like a vegan/vegetarian place on the road to somewhere remote. The food was pretty good. I had a greek salad minus the feta, and husband and I had the Pad Thai. I don’t usually have Pad Thai because of the fish sauce but I think this one didn’t have that as my husband confirmed. He always gets a Pad Thai every Thai place we go. This one passed the test for him. We also ordered the Falafel wrap to go. First place we’ve found where the food wasn’t killer expensive.
Aviatrix — Google review
got off 2 connecting flights one from dallas to seattle and seattle to maui, and this was the first place we sat down to eat after 12 hours of being on a flight. the two guys working there were so so kind and friendly with the questions we had and when we asked for recommendations. service was also super quick and the food was incredible!! the korma tasted so authentic to maui combining hawaii and india together. so so flavorful and the enchilada, middle eastern plate, and the etsalada salad were super good!! thank you for such great service and food!! :)
Kria T — Google review
This is One of the best Vegetarian and Vegan options joint to definitely visit while in Maui. The price, quality and quantity all are worth the visit. While in Maui, do give it a visit and you will not regret it. This place is full of Vegetarian food. They have Italian, Mexican, and Mediterranean cuisines and one Indian dish on the menu. You won’t regret this place.
Shetal P — Google review
The food is a fusion on good Asian vegetarian dishes with local authentic flavors of Hawaiian style cuisine. The chefs in the kitchen are well trained to make the platters to bring the authentic flavors.Recommend the place .We had Cheese Enchiladas,Middle eastern plate, garlic bread,Etsalada salad, Mac Nut Veggie Korma.
Lalitha C — Google review
This is the place to go for an excellent -relatively quick- meal that your body wont regret later. Sporting a completely vegetarian menu Veg Out brings a variety of dishes to table from Mediterranean to Mexican options. The staff seems to be small, as I am often greeted by a friendly familiar face each time I visit. I love coming here! Veg Out always provide consistent and delicious meals- the burrito being one of my favorite and the burger taking a close second. This humble little spot is sure to leave you feeling full, and satisfied.
Syd S — Google review
We had lunch at Veg Out today and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The falafel wrap was very good, nice balance of the falafel and veggies, and a light but tasty sauce for it. My wife enjoyed her"steak" sandwich and commented how good the bread was. We look forward to going back and trying the muffaletta.
Wes G — Google review
Hidden gem in Maui for Vegetarian/Vegan people, especially its multi cuisine and food is very flavourful, and its owner operated, thanks a lot for keeping the flag of authenticity so high

Food was very good! Small place but nice person who managed. Taste and price is very good! Recommended for non meats.

Ka Haku’s Smoke Shack

Permanently Closed
Restaurant
Barbecue restaurant
Ka Haku’s Smoke Shack is a must-visit gem along the Road to Hana, where you can indulge in delicious Mainland-inspired barbecue that stands out from the typical Island fare. This spot offers a unique menu featuring glazed pork belly, pohole fern, and sweet plantains wrapped in banana leaves. Diners rave about their BBQ chicken plate lunches, which come with two scoops of rice and mac salad—perfect for satisfying your hunger after exploring the scenic road.
Such a cool stop, super low key, cash only, just a couple of guys firing up some food. Super friendly, talked about the different foods they have depending on the day. Cool to see them cook and prepare everything right here on the side of the hill. From the chop stick to the plates to the food and drink they prep it all right here in front of you. Daughter loved sitting in the "train" to eat and everyone really enjoyed the food. Was really great to have a proper quiet spot to hang out and talk to the people running their business. I would certainly come here again.
Nathan D — Google review
Stumbled upon this place on the road to Hana. It smelled awesome so we had to stop. The mixed BBQ plate was awesome. It had pork, chicken, rice and a fern salad. It was all so delicious. The guy working the grill was super friendly and cool. The seating is in old tram cars. The "plates" are big chunks of bamboo. The utensils are hand cut bamboo chopsticks. I can't say enough about how incredible this place was. It is a must stop on your road to Hana.
Jen H — Google review
$30 for a platter that will feed two people. There is not a single inorganic item used the plate is banana the chopsticks or bamboo. And I watched them pick the salad up the hill from The shack shack. Everything tasted great!
Nathan S — Google review
Very unique and definitely worth the stop for a bite to eat. The chicken, pork, rice and veggies were full of flavor, and served on a piece of bamboo, with bamboo chopsticks.
Jessica B — Google review
A smoke shack indeed… the single cook uses everything from Mother Nature to make and prepare the meal. Only option we were able to order was the combo (pork + chicken). We then we’re told to sit at the tables, which is what looked like abandoned trolley cart. He think brought our food out to us in tree husks with two cut up bamboo sticks to use as chopsticks. Very innovative I must say. And for a smoke house in the middle of the jungle on the side of a narrow road (Road to Hana) this place indeed hit the spot for the meat eaters. Unfortunately, this place is definitely not vegetarian friendly—obviously. The meat was on a bed of spring mix, rice, and a few veggies. After we were finished the cook brought out a “leaf” plate of pineapple chunks, which was very refreshing on a hot day following a hot meal. Definitely an experience to try (for all you meat lovers)! I believe we paid $50 for two meals
Lily J — Google review
Best bbq chicken and pork! Pineapple was delicious too! Dont forget to bring cash 💵!!! They dont accept venmo or apple pay.
Minju K — Google review
If you plan to go to Arboretum Eden Garden, you have to stop here an live a foodies experience in Ka Haku Smoke Shack.
Simone V — Google review
Our best meal in Maui! The huli chicken was amazing! The fern salad was a great addition. Loved the food serving in plates from banana steams with chopsticks made from a bamboo shoot.

Satrang

Permanently Closed
Indian restaurant
Satrang is a food truck located in the lush slopes of Haiku, Maui, offering North and South Indian cuisine with a focus on gluten-free options. The limited menu features perfected dishes that showcase the diverse flavors of Indian cuisine. Customers can enjoy their meals amidst the beautiful surroundings of the South Maui nursery area in Kihei. The food truck provides excellent customer service and allows visitors to walk through or sit in the nursery during business hours.
Indian food cart in the south maui nursery area in Kihei. Beautiful location. You can walk through or sit in the nursery during their business hours. Customer service was great. Food was great. I did not want rice with my chicken curry plate and they replaced rice with plain dosa. That was wonderful suggestion since I like dipping. The filled dosas and samosas were great as well. Strongly recommend tamarind chutney with these items. We visited this place twice in one week. Thank you
Mya T — Google review
I got a masala Dosa and regular Dosa with chutney. Did not have the usual spice level I am used to but I know they have to cater to many palettes being in a tourist area. It still had the classic dosa and coconut chuntney taste I have come to love. One masala Dosa would likely not be enough for an average person but the two was perfect. Came in around $16 which I think is totally reasonable for the area and what you'll be paying at most restaurants.
Chella B — Google review
For Indians: it’s not your usual spice level but definitely has the right amount of flavor to do the job, dosa sambar and chutney were full of flavor and were piping hot, lemon rice could be little more flavorful For Non Indians, enjoy the awesome food, it’s amazing! There are rest rooms just opposite to the food truck.
Sirisha M — Google review
One of the best and authentic south Indian food we had in USA. We ordered the South Indian combo and veg korma combo plate. Both plates were really good. Especially loved the coconut chutney, it was fresh and masala dosa was awesome!
Nitya — Google review
Good food. Slow service. Food truck was run by a single person. It was in a food truck park with a bunch of other options nearby. We had lunch here. Masala dosa was great. Chutney was just raw coconut. The vegetable korma was great too. Small portions for the price.
Rohit R — Google review
Fresh and tasty food! Clean place. Sweet people. Sambar and coconut chutney tasted yum! awesome lassi. a must visit in haiku if you’re a foodie too :)
Khushboo D — Google review
I strongly recommend to taste the Indian Food from Nirvana. Jason (the owner) was very friendly and keen to help us in our decision about the meal, he explained us about the different ingredientes and flavours of the food and then took our order. Wait time was ok (about 10 minutes) but anyway it is located in a nice place to spend a while with family or friends. Because of that I would say the service and environmental was very very good. About the food, my recommenadation is to get the Dakine Plate (Salad, raita, chicken curry and vegetables) with Naan as a side. This was absolutely delicious and I recommend this to every person who goes to this place.
Pedro L — Google review
We were fortunate to find this place on our recent trip to Maui. The food was very authentic and flavorful. I grabbed a few things for lunch for the kids while I was out running errands. The kids loved the dosa so much they wanted more for dinner. My mother in law also tried some of the kids food and asked for some for herself. We were very pleased with the food. The service was excellent as well. We will certainly return here on our future trips to Maui.

Bailey's Café

Permanently Closed
Hawaiian restaurant
Bailey's Café comes highly recommended by locals and visitors alike. The menu offers a variety of delicious options, including the mixed steak and chicken plate that many rave about. The steak mixed plate is particularly popular, with tender meat and flavorful sauce that make it a standout dish. Additionally, the shoyu chicken is praised for its fall-off-the-bone tenderness and rich flavor.
This place was recommended by our Maui Bike Tour Guide, Kimo. By the time we got back to the parking lot, we were starved. While inquiring about a few menu items, the lovely young woman gave us both tastes of the chicken. My friend had that, I had the chopped beef. I was expecting something like a burger, but mine was delicious, fresh sliced strips of real beef. Whatever it was marinated in it was really tasty. The beef was also cooked just perfectly. The rice was great too. I'd eat here again in a second!
Glenn R — Google review
Mixed Steak and Chicken Plate is the best food around. Try the ginger lemonade. Must have.
Martin H — Google review
Steak mixed plate was fantastic. The best steak I've ever had in a mixed plate - great sauce, meat just falling apart tender. Good rice and Mac salad and green salad. Family had shoyu chicken and it was also excellent, meat falling off the bone and very flavorful. Only downside is that the prices are fairly high for a food truck, but it was well worth it!
Austin S — Google review
Gorgeous vista of the north shore and yes portion of the beach is sectioned off for turtles and we saw a few coming and going (turtle speed). The beach is very nice but busy of course. There is parking and turnover is high. There is also a cattle ranch right next door. You have to wonder if the cows care for such killer view that comes with high winds...probably not!
Ken L — Google review
Delicious! I had the grass fed beef chopped salad, and my husband had the tofu. Both were very tasty. The salad was made with very fresh greens, and the mac salad was very good (not too much mayo). Highly recommend.
Cyndie P — Google review
Simple but tasty plate lunches. Chopped steak was amazing! Shoyu Chicken was juicy and flavorful. Definitely a great and economical place to stop for lunch before Hana.
Joyce K — Google review
All the bois cruise there often asfffff. They’re food is so amazing every time and there prices are super minor. Customer service is amazing, the wait can feel like a bit sometimes but mainly because they’re always busy but it’s always worth it. In my opinion the best thing to get on the menu is the teriyaki tofu plate. Along with a berry hibscus tea.
Naya S — Google review
You know, this place used to be good, but that’s until “Bailey” or whatever her actual name is stared to just have no pono for the community of haiku (in which I’m born and raised), and started to look more into the profit. What started as a good food truck with lokal kine grindz turned into a tourist hotspot with little food and insane prices. And that’s not even the worst part, either. You’re lucky to buy anything from them these days, as they seem to be more closed than open. So, please people, just go to the veg out or even the grocery store, because that’s actually supporting our community, not haoles trying to profit off Hawaiians. Shootz 🤙🤙🤙

Bob's Dogs

Permanently Closed
Hot dog restaurant
If you're ever in Maui, make sure to stop by Bob's Dogs for a culinary treat that will tantalize your taste buds! Known for serving up some of the best hot dogs on the island, Bob uses all-beef franks imported from Chicago and pairs them with fresh bread. Visitors rave about the delicious flavors, especially the classic Chicago dog and their unique mustard. Beyond just great food, Bob and his wife are known for their warm hospitality and engaging conversations.
Visited Ho'okipa Beach Park yesterday, and all the food trucks (including Bob's Hot Dogs) and souvenir merchants are gone from the lookout area. Was advised that Maui County updated it's bylaw in 2020 and evicted all the food and souvenir merchants. Bob served up one of the best hot dogs, and provided plenty of interesting conversation. Would like to know whether Bob's Hot Dogs is still in operation, and if yes, where he is now located. A trip to Maui is incomplete without having one of Bob's hot dogs!!
Robert M — Google review
Came to get a Bobs dog 2 days in a row and he’s not at the favorite spot anymore. Gonna miss you Bob. I’m here every year from Montreal Canada. I wish I knew where you’re situated now. Best darn hot dog you can get.

Aloha 'Aina BBQ and Catering

Barbecue restaurant
Caterer
Aloha 'Aina BBQ and Catering is a must-visit food truck along the Road to Hana, offering authentic Kiawe BBQ that impresses both locals and tourists. The menu features traditional BBQ dishes like tender pork belly, succulent ribs, and juicy brisket, as well as exceptional sides such as Pohole Salad, Cilantro Coconut Sticky Rice, and Cornbread with Guava Butter.
I don't usually write reviews but the food was so incredibly delicious, I feel I would be doing future potential visitors a disservice if I didn't write a review. My wife and I absolutely loved it here. We knew immediately after taking our first bite. We've tried various huli huli chicken places in Oahu the last time we were there and this place easily beats them all. The huli huli chicken was exceptionally moist and absolutely delicious. BBQ drumstick/wings were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. I asked for the chili garlic sauce on the side instead of on the chicken, but for future visits, I'll definitely ask for it on the meat itself. The wasabi flavor with the potato mac salad was an awesome twist to differentiate their salad from every other place on the island that left us craving for more. The cornbread with guava butter was 5/5. My wife doesn't like cornbread but she ate this and loved it! Portion size was extremely generous. Even though they're over an hour drive for us from the west side, we're hoping to make one last stop before our vacation ends!
Sam S — Google review
Just to be clear about what about to say, I’m Texan. I’ve eaten at the top BBQ joints in the state including Franklins. I’ve been making my own bbq for as long as I can remember. Now.. This place has some of the best darn bbq I have ever tasted. The brisket was amazing, the sides were amazing.. that huli huli chicken? OMG. The pork belly is just non stop mouth watering delicious. I don’t care if you’re driving the Road to Hana for the tourist sites or whatever.. make the trip too try this food. You won’t regret it. Seriously. I’ve been back in Texas for two weeks, and have bbq a few times, and I still can’t stop thinking about that chicken and pork belly.

Just got here for work and People keep telling me about the BBQ here. Saw this on the side of the road so I slid all up in there! The folks there were so kind and welcoming. Im glad I stopped cause it's one of the best bbq I've had in a long time. This is Huli huli chicken and the kalua pork. On the side is a local fern called pohole they use in a salad. gotta try it! They also sell maui smoked salt. 👌

This is a must stop either on the way to Hana, watching the sea turtles or Jaws. We had the brisket and the Hooley chicken both were outstanding and juicy. I love my potato salad, and the wasabi macaroni potato salad was awesome!! I’m not much of a salad eater, but we bought the fern salad and it was incredibly refreshing with a soy ginger sauce. $25 fed us both . The atmosphere is delightful and we played connect four while waiting for the food. Will absolutely be back. This is yet another wonderful food truck with an outdoor hangout area that is delightful.

Kings BBQ

Barbecue restaurant
Tucked away in the vibrant Haiku Marketplace on Maui's North Shore, Kings BBQ is a beloved gem that beautifully marries traditional Chinese flavors with local Hawaiian cuisine. This charming eatery prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and cherished family recipes to create an all-day menu brimming with local favorites. Diners can indulge in comforting Saimin, savory Chow Mein, and Wonton Mein among other delightful options.
Great service and pricing for the quantity and quality you’re getting. Guy at the front was very kind to us. Will definitely be back if I am in the area. The food is very delicious and even tho the place is old it is very clean.

Been going to Kings in Haiku, a few times a month, for a couple of years now. Always fast and delicious and a good deal for the cost. Wasn't as excited about the quality of the American style food offerings (burgers & fries) but if you're looking for good Chinese, they do it well. I highly recommend the eggplant chicken 👍🏼

King's is a conveniently located Chinese/Hawaiian restaurant in a humble storefront. Prices are a relief from resort gougers, and the food is good and fast. Generous portions. I had Chicken Katsu the first time, and it was delectable. Second time, Chicken Chow Mein. Check their menu. Lots of variety, not just chicken. After ordering at the counter, I heard the ingredients for my Chow mein hitting a hot wok in the kitchen. Fresh, hot and delicious. My son can't stop eating their orange chicken. Yeah, Kings should be on your lunch/dinner list.

I give this restaurant a 5 star for quality of food and affordability. Great portion sizes for the price. The BBQ mixed platter was delicious as well as the musubi. Great find!

I tried to share this but just posted the photo earlier. The food was fantastic, portions were generous, and the service was good. This picture is of the black pepper chicken; definitely recommended!

Ordered a char siu fried rice from their catering menu for a potluck. Everyone loved it and kept asking me where I got the food from. Very reasonable prices and great tasting food in a humble little shop.

Nearby airports

Kahului Airport

Airport
Kahului Airport, located in Maui, is a hub for both overseas and interisland flights. The airport offers convenient car rental services, allowing travelers to quickly begin their exploration of the island. One popular activity is driving the scenic Road to Hana, which winds through rainforests and past waterfalls, beaches, and bamboo forests. The airport's open design allows warm ocean air to flow through the terminal, creating a relaxed atmosphere that reflects the rich island culture.
This is one of those classic airports, showcasing vintage tram service. We had a rental car, so we took their tram to reach it. It was wonderfully retro and easy to navigate. Inside, the airport offers plenty of food options—from Burger King to Hawaiian local cuisine and various pizza shops. It's a small and charming airport that takes you back in time.

I’m giving 4 stars because it’s still in Hawaii and has that Hawaiian vibe. Plus it has all the stuff you want and can expect in a relatively small airport. Decent food and shops. Bright and airy. And two Priority Pass lounges. Now, both lunges are sub-par compared to other airports, but at least they got ‘em! The tram to car rental system is good, quick, and well organized. The airport is easy to get in and out of. And they have all the major airlines you’d likely use. Aloha!

As expected, this is a small island airport, but it still has all the stores and services you need to make it a great starting point for your Maui adventures. Like many others have mentioned, it features an excellent tram service that takes you directly to the rental car facilities. We left our rental car in the public parking lot for one day while we visited the Big Island and ended up paying a steep $36 the next day. Another helpful tip is that there’s a Walmart just a 5-minute drive from the airport, perfect for stocking up on water, juices, fruits, snacks, and sweets to make your road trips around the island even more enjoyable, such as the Road to Hana. What really set this airport apart compared to others was the outstanding service we received from Monica at United Airlines, along with a very friendly senior security officer on the day of our departure. Thank you so much, Monica, for making our check-in so smooth, hats off to you!

A lot of the walkways and passages are outdoor and full of birds. Be ready to sweat! 😂 Also the stores seem to close around 5-6pm so if you're traveling during the evening then you're going to be hungry. Or you can pay ~$20 for some Burger King. Beyond that it's a decent airport.

Simple airport to navigate with a great tram system that takes you to the rental car area. The terminal, and bathrooms along the way, were clean and we walked to a central hub that had a Starbucks and other shops. Heading down the baggage claim was easy to find and our bags were already coming out by the time we arrived. We rented a car from Hertz so we jumped across the street to catch the tram that took us to the rental car area. It was maybe a 5 minute ride, at most.

This airport is small, but still great place. I took SFO to Maui and maui to SFO it was really chill United Airlines. I took them. It was really nice. Very small airport though that’s the only thing. got out of that airport quick.

I travel a lot, but this airport is one of the most relaxed in the world! Old but clean with a nice charming character.

Great little airport, with actually quite friendly and helpful staff. It's strange flying 5hrs over the ocean and it still being an "internal" flight. We had hired a car when we arrived and given the compact size of the airport it was worth dropping the luggage off with my wife curbside and me doing a quick loop to return the car. It's a 3 minute walk to the departures terminal or you could ride the green tram which might be quicker, but that depends on the timing. We used the tram to transport us and our luggage to collect the hire car, but the arrivals terminal is further away.
