Cafe Chill

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Sri Lankan restaurant
Cafe Chill, located in Ella, has evolved from a small roadside shack to a bustling two-story restaurant in the heart of town. It attracts a diverse crowd of travelers and locals looking to indulge in a variety of Western and Sri Lankan dishes along with flavorful cocktails. The cafe is renowned for its burgers served with hand-cut fries and coleslaw, as well as traditional local dish lamprais.
We were here 5 people and we had - close to - the best restaurant experience in all of Sri Lanka. First of all we came and got seated right away, with the Menu's right away. We ordered our drinks. We got our drinks and we gave our orders, and got our food shortly after. The food was very delicious with good portions for the price. All in all it was a nice place 🙂 - Also, the toilets are amazing and there is a free wifi. (Just ask for it)

Cafe Chill was recommended to us by both a friend and our driver while we were in Ella, and it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was vibrant, with great music and lighting that gave the place an energetic vibe. The food was absolutely delicious—we were pleasantly surprised to see poutine on the menu, and it turned out to be really good. The drinks, however, stole the show. The margarita in particular was outstanding, easily one of the best we’ve had on our trip. Cafe Chill is fun, lively, and a must-visit spot for anyone in Ella. Highly recommended!
Saarangi B — Google review
The best Sri lankan food i had. Place interior design was great, spacious and very local. Prices are affordable and serving is generous. Chicken lamprais was the BEST in my entire sri lanka trip. Ambience and staff are great.
Nenen P — Google review
Amazing place! Me and my wife had a very nice experience eating here! We ordered two typical dishes and were very tasty! Maybe the prices are somewhat higher than other local places, but I would say it is very worthy taking in mind the portion sizes! The service was also very attentive and kind!

The Trip Advisor award of 2nd best casual dining in the world is well deserved. The burgers were yummy, as were the caesar salad, rice and curry plate and carbonara pasta. Fab music vibes from the resident DJ. Spectacular venue. Great service. Reservation highly recommended. Dine after 7:30pm to get the best atmosphere.
Mike P — Google review
I wont say much. This is the second best restaurant according to tripadvisor. So you should know by now how everything should be. Food: Great taste. Quantity is also huge. Almost all the fast food dishes comes with sides. We took two wraps, one vegetable noodles and one chicken burger. Everything was top notch in taste. The burger had three chicken patties which was very unexpected. Atmosphere: Nice atmosphere. You can feel the energy after entering. There is DJ and clubs. So a lot of options for entertainment. Service: Again, Good service. Staffs were friendly and helpful. They also work fast. Overall, highly recommended if you ever visit Ella

Cafe Chill isn't just a restaurant; it's the beating heart of Ella's backpacker and tourist scene. Located conveniently on the main road, this multi-level establishment perfectly lives up to its name, offering a genuinely relaxed and vibrant atmosphere that attracts both foreign and local travelers alike. Its popularity is evident in the crowds, but the space manages to feel welcoming. The stylish decor features a stunning thatched roof, ambient lighting, and creative seating, including large, comfortable beanbag areas upstairs. This ‘chill-out’ deck is ideal for unwinding after a long day of hiking Little Adam’s Peak or the iconic Ella Rock. The service is consistently friendly and efficient, with staff genuinely committed to ensuring a comfortable experience, even during peak hours. The menu is notably extensive and caters to nearly every palate, seamlessly blending comforting global favorites like pizza and burgers with authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. The local rice and curries are the must-try dishes, offering vibrant, fresh flavors that truly stand out. Additionally, they boast an excellent selection of exotic cocktails, local beers, and fresh, inventive fruit juices. While prices are slightly above the local average, they are very reasonable for the quality and prime location. Recognized globally for casual dining, Cafe Chill is a mandatory, high-energy stop for anyone visiting Sri Lanka's beautiful hill country.

The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming, spread across three beautifully designed floors with cozy seating and great vibes. The staff are incredibly friendly – a big shoutout to Omar, who made our experience extra special with his kindness and attention. The food was absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. You can tell the chefs know what they’re doing – everything from the starters to the main course was perfect. Don’t miss the king coconut juice – the best we’ve had anywhere! A perfect place to relax, eat well, and enjoy great service. Highly recommended!

We were excited to try Cafe One Love because of its strong social media presence, but it turned out to be the only bad dining experience of our 10-day trip across Sri Lanka. • Food safety issues: The fish in the fish-and-chips smelled rotten and was clearly off, we took a single bite and stopped for fear of food poisoning. Chicken nuggets were undercooked and pink inside. The devilled chicken was also undercooked, while the garlic bread came out burnt. • Poor handling of feedback: We ordered tacos after the waiter specifically promised a hard shell. He brought soft shells, and when we mentioned it, he simply took the food back and over-fried them until the tacos were dripping in oil. • Service attitude: When the four of us raised these concerns, the waiter ignored our points and arrogantly put the blame on us, even suggesting we had ordered too much and were complaining just to lower the bill. Every other restaurant we visited in Sri Lanka was hospitable and served excellent food. This cafe was the lone exception. The only impressive thing about Cafe One Love seems to be its marketing. Strong online buzz lured us here, but the reality was severely disappointing. If you value food safety and respectful service, give this place a miss.

🌟 The gluten-free pizza was absolutely amazing, and the quinoa salad was great too—just could’ve used a bit more quinoa 😄 Our first visit was a bit challenging because the waiter didn’t quite understand us, but the second time we had Kavi and Neela, who were the sweetest and most attentive servers ever. They understood us right away! If you have any sensitivities or special requests, I definitely recommend speaking with them. Overall, the owner is super friendly, and the place itself is beautiful with a fun, relaxed vibe. Highly recommended!

We had a great experience at Café One Love. Staff was super nice and the food was amazing, especially the turkish pizza which is one of the best pizza we ever ate. We came back the next day to eat it again! Brownie was also to die for. The restaurant in itself is very cute and cozy.
Shania G — Google review
I love the place. Service and stuff are amazing. Our waiter Neela was top! Quick, polite, kind. We were having a good time. Especially cool to sit on the top floor. My burger was 4 out of 5, the bolognese 5 out of 5. Drinks are good 😊🙌 I defo would recommend the place. You can pay by card, no language barrier. Also good choice for vegetarians.
Alex P — Google review
We went to Cafe One Love and really enjoyed it! The atmosphere is great, there is nice music but not too loud. There are a lot of seat possibilities, but it remains cozy and chill. We ordered the pesto pizza en chicken wraps which were both really good!! Also the service from Neela was good! We might come back here.

Saman was a great waiter who was very friendly and attentive. Happy hour arrack attack drinks delicious. Food was great, as vegetarians we enjoyed the egg fried rice in pineapple and the vegetable roti! Pizza was also tasty. Live music was nice in the background. Recommend for a dinner in Ella :)

We were served by a lovely gentleman Daniel. He was very helpful in everyway from the moment we walked into 360. Daniel is a very warm friendly gentleman who always greeted us with a smile. Thank you so much A*****

We had food and drinks here, cocktails were amazing, fresh and tasty, food delicious but the star of the place was our waiter Daniel! Daniel was the kindest person on earth, he made our day! His recommendations about food and cocktails were on point but not only, as I was sick he went above and beyond and brought me even some medicine and extra tissues 🥰 the food delicious, cocktails amazing and service quality is beyond amazing

The food was absolutely delicious, and the music and ambience made the experience even better. Our server, Anbu, was incredibly kind and patient—he served us with so much love and care. Despite the language barrier, he remained calm and attentive to all our needs. Thank you for such a wonderful dining experience!

Great location in Ella on the main strip. Live music however proper pub singer! One of the busier spots on the strip. Food was pretty standard for a bar…ordered the steak sub and butter chicken. Bread and rice were very dry. Good selection of drinks tho. Service was ok nothing amazing tbh

Wonderful place! Anbu was an amazing server — friendly and attentive with a friendly smile. The live music was fantastic, and the food was just as great. You should never miss spending a night at 360 Degree in Ella, Sri Lanka. The atmosphere is absolutely awesome — nothing less than what you'd find at top spots around the world. I’d love to come back!

Me and my husband had a lovely dinner with amazing love music. Our personal steward was Daniel was a great host, who invited us during a walk in town, and when we visited during dinner remembered us, and offered a great service, with pleasant conversation. Once he knew we were on our honeymoon, he also asked the band to play two of songs of our request. The food was amazing, best butter chicken I tasted! The pizza was also pretty good. And we loved the happy hour offer on cocktails. Definitely the place to enjoy a good dinner with great music, and impeccable service!

Café UFO Ella

Restaurant
Nestled in the vibrant town of Ella, Sri Lanka, Café UFO Ella offers a dining experience that feels truly out of this world. With its sleek, spaceship-inspired design and an innovative menu filled with cosmic-themed dishes, this café invites guests to indulge their imaginations while enjoying delicious food. The atmosphere is lively and perfect for mingling with fellow travelers; it’s a fantastic spot to connect with others who might be heading to your next destination.
(Cafe) UFO Absolutely Amazing – A Must-Visit in Ella! We ended up eating at Ufo every single day during our stay in Ella – that’s how good it is! Whether you're in the mood for Western dishes or authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, everything is cooked to perfection and served with care. The food is flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. What truly sets this place apart is the incredible staff. Everyone is warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful – always going the extra mile without expecting anything in return. Their kindness and service added so much to our experience. Highly recommend Ufo to anyone visiting Ella. You won’t be disappointed! Special thanx to Nishantha and Anula, who always made us feel welcome. Thanx to the staff we had the best seats to see the Ella Parade! It was beautifull watching the performance with their food and cocktails. Often you enjoy your meal with live music. (Instrumental saxophone)
Ilse D — Google review
The fried rice was excellent, fluffy, packed with shrimp and vegetables, served with a banana leaf crown and prawn crackers. Well seasoned, satisfying, and not greasy. The papaya seafood salad was refreshing, with sweet papaya, seafood, and crisp vegetables in a creamy dressing. Light but filling, and something a bit different. The king coconut drink looked fun, served in the shell with lemon on top and pieces of coconut sticking out. Cooling and refreshing, perfect for the heat. The mango juice was just as good, proper mango juice, thick and rich, not some watered down version. For dessert we had banana fritters, which were fantastic. Crispy on the outside, soft and sweet inside. Such a simple dessert, almost impossible to ruin, and they did it right. The only issue was that the staff forgot about our dessert and we had to remind them. The other downside was the flies. Too many of them buzzing around, which spoiled an otherwise great meal. Overall it was delicious food, playful presentation, excellent drinks and dessert, but the service slip and fly problem drag it down.
Wade W — Google review
We had a wonderful experience at UFO Cafe in Ella! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed meal. We tried the South Indian Biryani—not to be confused with Hyderabadi or Bombay biryani—which was flavorful and perfectly spiced. The Thai chicken soup and Caesar salad were tasty, though the portions are on the smaller side, so just be aware. Chanaka, the staff member, was very nice and made our visit even more enjoyable. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, and we highly recommend stopping by when in Ella!
Zee — Google review
The food was amazing. We ordered few dishes including rice and curries. All were delicious. Mr. Ayesh the staff who looked after / served was very friendly, attentive and very helpful. Definitely a great cafe to hang around with your loved ones.
Nerangika G — Google review
Very cozy place with a lot of variety in their menu. Chamath took our orders and was very kind and attentive to us! We had 2 big dishes, 2 deserts and 4 drinks in total and were very satisfied. The place has a very nice vibe and the staff is very friendly! Highly recommended.
André B — Google review
Extremely Disappointed – Never Visiting Again! I had one of the worst experiences at this place, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone – especially locals. Let me start with the customer service, which was absolutely terrible. The manager clearly has no idea how to talk to customers – very rude, arrogant, and completely unprofessional. You’d expect someone in that position to be trained in hospitality, but sadly, that’s not the case here. Even basic manners were missing. The staff are equally disrespectful. They act like they’re doing you a favor by simply responding to a question. No smile, no courtesy, and definitely no sense of service. If you ask something politely, they either ignore you or respond with attitude. I have never been treated this poorly in any public place. Now let’s talk about the security staff – unbelievably rude! They treat you like a criminal for simply being there. Instead of making you feel safe and welcome, they make you feel uncomfortable, unwanted, and disrespected. Who trained them? Another big issue – locals are not allowed to enter after 10:00 PM, even though the official closing time is 12:00 AM. Why advertise one thing and do another? We came all the way expecting to enjoy a late evening, only to be told “you can’t go in” by a rude security guard, for no valid reason. Total discrimination against locals. This place seriously needs better training for staff, especially management and security. If you want to run a business that welcomes people, start by learning basic respect and hospitality. Until that changes, I won’t be coming back – and I’ll make sure others know what to expect. Avoid this place if you value your dignity.

Ak Ristoro

Mentioned on
1 list
$$$$affordable
Restaurant
AK Ristoro is a popular dining spot in Ella, offering a mix of Italian, Japanese, Spanish tapas, and British fish and chips. The restaurant has recently reopened after a hiatus and serves up European and Italian-inspired cuisine with some Eastern-inspired dishes as well. It's located in a quieter part of Ella, just a short walk from the main road. The menu includes Sri Lankan and international meals alongside classic Italian dishes like pasta.
A Truly Exceptional Dining Experience! Our experience at this restaurant was beyond description — without a doubt, the best place we dined at during our entire stay in Sri Lanka. I would like to sincerely thank the waiter for his honesty. When we inquired whether the food was halal, he openly explained that even the fries and all fried items were cooked in the same oil used for pork and other non-halal meats. We deeply appreciated his transparency and integrity — it speaks volumes about the restaurant’s values. Now, the food itself was simply outstanding. The pizza was authentic Italian style — thin crust, perfectly baked, and made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The pasta was exactly as it should be: flavorful, perfectly cooked, and satisfying. And the salad… it was so fresh and delicious that we couldn’t resist ordering a second one! If you’re looking for a restaurant that delivers not only amazing food but also honest, respectful service, this is the place. Highly recommended without hesitation!

We recently visited this cozy place. Very nice interiors were there. Food was awesome! Freshly made and tasty. We loved the pizza, wraps and the fresh juices we got. Friendly customer service. Cool place to hang out.

I celebrated there my birthday with my boyfriend. It was a very right choice. If you want a special evening with a high quality food, calm relaxing atmosphere and exceptional service- it’s definitely the right place to choose. Reasonable prices and perfectly cooked dishes with a possibility to choose between Sri Lankan, Italian and Japanese food.

We love it here and loved it so much we came back twice! Food is lovely and so is the service. Our server the second time daran was so lovely and friendly. Would recommend anyone in Ella to come here. Price is very good aswell as it’s just shy off Ella centre so it’s not city centre prices! Pizza is excellent as you can see we had pizza both times!
Lauren D — Google review
This restaurant has a great variety of foods. I went here several times and found all the dishes to be amazing. Our waiter Daran was very kind, we saw him several times during our visit to the restaurant, which was fun. I very much recommend the pasta, and the pizza because it’s made in a traditional stone oven.

Food was great! Tandoori Chicken Pizza 4/5 Pizza was great, but I can hardly taste the tandoori. It tastes like regular chicken. Deviled Pork 5/5 This is a must! The waiter could improve their friendliness to enhance the overall dining experience.

AK Ristoro is one of the best cafes in Ella! The food is always fresh and full of flavour, and the atmosphere is beautiful and relaxed. Daran who was our waiter took good care of us and what I really appreciate is that they treat locals with the same warmth and respect as tourists — which is rare in Ella. The staff are friendly, the service is great, and it’s clear they care about quality and community. Highly recommend if you're looking for a spot that values both locals and visitors equally.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Ella, Sri Lanka, The Barn by Starbeans is a charming cafe housed in a rustic barn-style building. With its vintage decor and warm ambiance, it's the perfect spot for a relaxed meal or casual coffee break. The menu offers a variety of options from hearty breakfasts to international dishes like Italian and Mexican cuisine, as well as seafood. Visitors can also enjoy wood-fired pizzas and cocktails at this inviting eatery.
Amazing place! The food was fresh and really tasty, but what made the experience special was the service. Pradeep was absolutely amazing – he helped me choose the best dishes and everything turned out delicious. He also shared so many great tips on what to do and see in Ella, which was super helpful for my trip. I truly felt welcomed and cared for, not just like a regular guest. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Ella! 🥰
Patrycja L — Google review
After a few days of eating local food in more traditional spots, we were craving something more international like pizza or burgers. This place looked great and it did not disappoint at all! 🍕 The Neapolitan style wood-fired pizzas were delicious, so good that we came back the very next day. We also tried the crispy chicken burger and it was honestly the juiciest chicken we’ve had in the whole country. Usually it’s overcooked and dry, but here it was perfectly cooked and really tender. Service was super friendly and fast. Special thanks to our waiter Pradeep who looked after us both times. Definitely recommend!
María R — Google review
We went to The Barn for dinner and got Chicken Parmesan and Chicken Pepperoni Pizza. Both were really good! The mocktails were also delicious. The place had a really fun vibe with amazing live singing; the singer had a beautiful voice! The staff were super helpful and courteous. We went back the following morning for some coffee and asked if they had any breakfast item with oatmeal for our baby. The server showed us muesli mentioned on the menu but it was a big portion so we requested if a baby-sized portion of plain oats could be made. Not only did the server get the oatmeal ready for our baby, he also refused to take the payment for it, saying that it was for the baby and we don’t need to pay! Such a sweet gesture by an amazing gentleman (we forgot to ask his name!). Hats off to the servers at this place. Will definitely recommend it to anyone staying in Ella. P.S. They serve halal chicken, which was a big plus for us!
Hala B — Google review
If Ella is the crown jewel of Sri Lanka’s hill country, then The Barn is its shining diamond. This is not just a restaurant—it’s a culinary stage where flavors, atmosphere, and service perform in harmony. The true star? Dhanushka. His mastery of food and beverage knowledge rivals that of top sommeliers and seasoned chefs. He doesn’t simply take orders—he guides you through an experience. With refined recommendations, perfect pairings, and an eye for detail, he transforms dining into an elegant journey. Every bite here feels curated, every sip perfectly chosen. The Barn is the kind of place you don’t just dine at—you remember it as part of your Ella story.
Methmal N — Google review
What an incredible find in Ella! The Barn Restaurant is more than just a place to eat — it’s an experience. From the first welcome to the last moment, everything felt smooth, genuine, and thoughtfully done. Special recognition goes to Dhanushka, who turned our dinner into something unforgettable. He has a natural talent for making guests feel valued — not just with flawless service, but with the kind of conversation that leaves a lasting impression. It felt like dining with someone who truly cares about both the details and the people. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and matched perfectly by the warmth of the service. This is the kind of place that makes you want to come back, not just for the cuisine, but for the way it makes you feel. If you’re in Ella, don’t miss The Barn — it’s a gem that combines great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and service that stays with you long after the meal.

We stopped here for a quick drink break and tried the Café Mocha and Frozen Strawberry Margarita. The mocha was good, similar to other cafés in Ella, but the margarita really stood out—refreshing and perfect for a sunny daytime drink. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service. The atmosphere is relaxed, though since it’s located by the roadside you may hear some vehicle noise. If you prefer a quieter spot, you can sit inside or on the rooftop (inside the cafe - covered space), which has a nice vibe. During the day, it’s less crowded and a great place to sit and spend time, while at night it becomes quite lively with more people. Overall, it’s a popular café worth visiting, and I’d love to come back next time I’m in Ella.

All the meals were delicious and full of flavor! The pratah and roti were made fresh and served piping hot. Easily one of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka. Prices were reasonable. The setting could be nicer but that didn’t stop us from enjoying it. Totally recommend!

Very nice place! We were first irritated as there was a queue in front of the restaurant and we've never seen one before a queue for a restaurant in Sri Lanka. However, we tried lunch next day at this place and it was really really tasty. We had a chicken curry and we could choose additional 4 side curries to the main dish. Prices were very reasonable. If we go to Ella again, we would definitely visit this place again!!!!
Florian B — Google review
This cooking class was undoubtedly one of the best experiences we've had so far in Sri Lanka! If you are in (or will go to) Ella, you definitely cannot miss this opportunity! It was a super complete and enriching experience, where we learned a lot about the culture and typical cuisine of Sri Lanka. The chef who taught us the cooking class was incredible, besides having a lot of experience and knowledge in the area (an authentic chef), he was super enthusiastic, funny, kind and cheerful! It was a pleasure meeting him and being able to have this cooking class with him! We were able to learn how to cook several typical Sri Lankan dishes from scratch. We were even able to make our own coconut milk, from the moment we cracked the coconut until we made the milk itself, super fresh and tasty. Then, we cooked a coconut roti, several different types of curry and also a delicious dessert with banana. And, in the end, we ate and enjoyed the delicious meal we cooked with our classmates. It was a really fun and amazing experience in Ella! Don’t miss it if you have the chance because it's really worth it! 😊

One of the best and most cost friendly meals we had in Sri Lanka. Came across it as we were stopping by in Ella. Service was extremely quick and helpful. The food was amazing! We had the chicken curry that comes along with 4 vegetarian curries, each was extremely flavourful! Highly recommend.

Very good curries and a big unique variety! Chose mango, jackfruit and banana curry, as well as dhal and spinach and a plate of kottu, with coconut symbol. Flavorful, quick service and very tasty! ... and kept coming for more!

For an authentic Sri Lankan culinary experience, we highly recommend this restaurant. The cuisine is both delicious and genuinely representative of Sri Lankan flavors, offered at a reasonable price point. The staff consistently demonstrates exceptional courtesy and kindness; in particular, Mr. Upali provided outstanding service, characterized by his friendly demeanor and efficient responsiveness.

We were told this was a must-visit in Ella — and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Expect a short wait even in the quieter seasons, but it’s worth every minute. This unassuming little restaurant sits toward the far end of town (opposite side from Nine Arches) and greets you with friendly staff who keep things moving efficiently. The service was excellent — menus given while queuing, tables cleaned quickly, and great recommendations from the team. We had the samosa, curry selection, and flatbread — simply wow. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and spiced perfectly to our taste (medium). No room left for dessert, but they looked fantastic too. A special shout-out to our waiter, who even tipped us off about a local music event that night. The meal was very affordable. Would say lives up to expectations and more. Best dinner of our trip.

We had our lunch at the rooftop restaurant. I can give 10 out of 10 for the location. We ordered pizza, fried Cashewnuts and mix meat platter. We ordered the mix platter cost Rs 6,500 for two persons. But it enough for 4 persons. Worth for money. Cocktails also good. I highly recommend this place for both locals and foreigners.

We went here for dinner and tried their special Fisherman’s Pizza along with an ice-cold beer and lime drink. The pizza had a thin crust and the taste was superb. The atmosphere was calm and pleasant, and the service was top-notch. Overall, we had a great dining experience at night in Ella town.

Food is a hit and miss. We ordered 2 sandwiches - both lacking flavour and very oily. We also ordered a fish and chips which was fine - although not close to traditional, and a veg kottu which was good. The cafe also had a lot of flies and was difficult to enjoy our visit.

No sleep can wreck your digestion full of gas and zero energy So yeah, be careful what you feed your stomach first thing in the day. Don’t make your stomach go යකාගේ කම්මල. So here’s a shoutout went to Dream Cafe, Ella around 1 p.m. asking for a smoothie bowl. The guy said, Sorry boss, it’s lunchtime. But he saw my face and went, “No worries, I’ll do my best.” And he came back with an overnight oats bowl with yogurt ,pure heaven for my empty stomach Big shoutout to the steward (not sure if it was Sathish or Sajee/Jagiz) you’re the real one, boss! 🙌 Thanks Dream Cafe, Ella for having best ppl💚

We went here for breakfast and the food was not good, especially based on the price. I had the yogurt and fruit with french toast. The fruit used appeared to be from a tin, with the syrup causing the yoghurt to be less thick and watery. The french toast did not have a good flavour. My partner got the omelette which has a fishy taste to it. Coffee was also not great. Overall we would not recommend.

The food here was simply amazing. I had the fried noodles with chicken, and the chicken was so juicy and well seasoned! If you order something with chicken, you wish for chicken that tastes like this did. The staff was polite and attentive. Stefan was great! He was kind and service was fast. We sat all the way at the top of the cafe, where there's a cute little pagoda-like sitting place. Really cool spot.

Staff is attentive and lovely. We had avocado toast and fruit smoothie bowls, accompanied by lotus flower tea and The sky meets sea tea. All was perfectly presented and delicious. Also, ordering the cake of the day helps to support local street dog, today it was an amazing vegan chocolate. When paying for the bill we thanked them for the great food and service, and the reply was so heartwarming, they said, in summary, that as long as the customers were happy they were happy 😊

Had a really good experience at Rainbow Café in Ella. We tried koththu and nachos for dinner and went back for lunch and had fried rice, everything was super flavorful, and the portion sizes were much bigger than we expected, especially for a place in Ella. The staff were genuinely kind and attentive, and the manager, Jason, made us feel really welcomed from the moment we arrived. They also cater to different dietary needs with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices, which was nice to see. The place has a cozy atmosphere, but it fills up quite fast. So going a bit early or booking ahead might be a good idea. Would definitely recommend stopping by.

I had a wonderful experience at this café. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the coffee was excellent. A special thank you to Sasindu, our waiter, who was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was perfect during our visit. I also loved the fact that the proceeds from the cake of the day go to help local street dogs – such a thoughtful and meaningful initiative. This makes enjoying a piece of cake here feel even more special. I’ll definitely come back again!

Ellement Hiking Bar is a great place to enjoy cocktails and good food. They have a great vibe, and the bartender was talented. They work with MozzarElla Restaurant downstairs, which offers delicious drinks and amazing pizza. There is always something happening at Ellement Hiking Bar - from sports on the giant projector to live music on occasion!
The food is delicious and the place is very clean and enjoyable. You can chill with a DJ. The view is very beautiful. Their service is also very good. The food here is great, I got the roasted chicken and my partner got the curry and rice and both were so tasty! Service from Karan was fantastic. We also came back for the evening and there was a DJ on who played some great music, and the atmosphere was really nice! Also bonus points for the adorable cat. Would highly recommend this place for food and drinks!

Food was average – the vegetarian burger, wraps, and coriander soup (with very little actual coriander) were nothing special. Unfortunately, the waiting time was very long, despite the restaurant being empty and plenty of staff around. Pro tip: approaching tourists at the entrance with three staff members “on guard” feels more off-putting than welcoming. It also looks chaotic when so many employees are wandering around without purpose, and the lack of inviting music doesn’t help. The location right on the way from the train station has great potential, but sadly it’s not being used.

Batticaloa Airport was originally opened on 17 November 1958 and was administered by Department of Civil Aviation.[6][7][8] About a decade later Air Ceylon started operating domestic flights between Batticaloa and Ratmalana via Gal Oya Airport using a 29 seat Nord Aviation aircraft.[6] The 75 minute flight between Batticaloa and Ratmalana became popular, particularly with government employees who could use railway warrants for three domestic flights each year.[6][7] Following the failure of Air Ceylon in August 1979 all domestic flights from the airport ceased.[6]

Sri Lanka's small private airlines, which operated out of Ratmalana, another airport in Colombo, initially to Jaffna carrying domestic passengers generally went out of business, partly due to competition from the military. Domestic demand for air travel to Jaffna also fell after a train service with air conditioned coaches started. At the moment Cinnamon Air, using small floatplanes are operating flights to several destinations using lakes and lagoons to land

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

International airport
Good airport with well planned and good infrastructure facilities. And also new technology. Must operate & develop this airport to develop the country and that area. But now as it is inoperative they didn't maintained it well.
Lahiru S — Google review
Flying a bit around the world I have never encountered anything like this airport. The airport may be clean. You can also feel safe here and the service is attentive. Very few options for consumption and shopping. Most of the staff speaks at least a little English. Incompetent ground staff, there was one flight that evening and they still didn't manage to get all the luggage into the plane. Things like this probably only happen in Sri Lanka. Prices are like at airports and it depends on who you are. If you can, avoid this airport.
Adam P — Google review
Visitors can enter the airport without any restrictions Locals per person entrance fee was 150/= Vehicle ticket was 200/= Staff was friendly and guided us Spacious, clean and less crowded .

Flying through Maththala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) was an unusual but efficient experience. The terminal is modern, clean, and well-staffed with fast check-in, friendly service, and good amenities like cafes, play areas, ATMs, and medical support. Even immigration was quick and hassle-free. That said, this airport is extremely quiet flights are very few and passenger volumes are low so it may feel like you have the entire place to yourself. Planning transportation is essential; taxis are expensive and public options are minimal. If you're visiting southern Sri Lanka, this airport could save you road travel time just make sure your transfer is already arranged. Wild animals do occasionally wander nearby, adding a touch of the wild to your arrival or departure.
Saranga R — Google review
Nicely designed airport but the money spent on this was such a waste. Initially envisioned as a major international gateway to boost regional development and tourism, the airport has faced several challenges, including low passenger traffic and limited airline interest. The airport has a huge infrastructure development in the surrounding area, including roads, hotels, and other facilities. The airport has struggled with low passenger numbers and limited flights, impacting its economic viability. High maintenance and operational costs with insufficient revenue generation have been a financial burden.
Gayani P — Google review
It is not crowded place. Fast service. There is not souvenir shop, only small liquor and tobacco shop and tea shop. There is no tax return office. MRIA was opened in March 2013 by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who ordered the construction of the airport. Initially, several airlines flew to the airport, including SriLankan Airlines which established a hub. However, due to low demand, most of these airlines left Mattala. Due to the low number of flights, it has been proposed to offer long-term aircraft parking services as well as creating flying schools and maintenance services to be offered from the airport. In 2016 the Sri Lankan government called for Expressions of Interest to run commercial activities of the Airport as the airport is not generating enough revenue to pay back the loans. Once it has been called "The World's Emptiest International Airport" by Forbes due to its low number of flights despite the large size of the airport. However in 2020, newly elected Sri Lankan Government scrapped the negotiations with India to run the airport as a joint venture. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport has seen an increase in traffic due to repatriation, charter and seafarer flights.
Naashif M — Google review
A well planed airport to land bigger airplanes. This is the second main airport in sri lanka. I have served in my profession at this place around 6 months. You have to beware of wild animals such as elephants, vipers if you are going to stay there and serve.
Shehan M — Google review
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, located in southern Sri Lanka, is a modern facility with a spacious terminal and minimal crowding. Known for its quick processing times and clean environment, it offers a peaceful alternative to busy airports. Though currently underutilized, it has great potential for growth.
