Bill's Lewes Restaurant is a delightful spot that has become a beloved fixture in the town since its inception in 2001. Originally starting as a greengrocer by Bill Collinson, it has evolved into a charming café and delicatessen, offering an array of menus for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. Known for its inviting atmosphere and rustic decor, this eatery serves up everything from brunch favorites to gourmet pizzas and delectable tartlets.
As a food critic, my visit to Bill's in Lewes, the very birthplace of this now-ubiquitous chain, was a delightful reminder of its enduring appeal. Nestled in this amazing town, the restaurant truly shines, offering a welcome respite with its vibrant, relaxed atmosphere. From the moment we stepped in, the staff were exceptionally attentive, striking that perfect balance between professional service and genuine warmth. Our starter, a crispy calamari with a perfectly tangy aioli, set a promising tone. But the star of the show was undoubtedly the delicious burger. Cooked to perfection with a juicy patty, fresh accompaniments, and a soft, yielding bun, it was a testament to simple ingredients executed flawlessly. Bill's Lewes demonstrates that even as a chain, it retains a charm and quality that makes it a highly enjoyable dining experience. A solid choice for a casual yet satisfying meal in a picturesque setting. Nick #doctorfoodielondon

We were lovely served by Izzy and Dan. The hospitality is very good! My meat was first overcooked but they offered me a new meal, which was perfectly cooked, and compensation. I enjoyed the rump steak very much! The ambiance was so nice. We had a really nice talk about Lewes and so many other things. A lovely place to be for a good meal and perfect service.

Exceptional service from Emma and team, we were a large group of 13 people celebrating 5 birthdays. We ordered from the large group set menu. Everything was delicious and arrived at the table in a timely manner. All additional requests were accommodated with ease and a smile. The restaurant is so pretty and cosy when it starts to get dark outside. Thank you for having us and helping us celebrate such a special evening

Jordan made our date breakfast much better by ensuring us hungry parents were full up on bottomless pancakes for the entire duration of a child free mornings. He made my husband 2 perfect cortados even though they weren’t on the menu. He was pleasant to chat to and confident when talking to us. Thanks Jordan and Bills for pancakes.

it was absolutely wonderful, the staff were welcoming and perfect, exactly what we’d expect from a restaurant like this. it was lovely to see management doing their part to serving the guests and making every part of the experience fantastic….we would 1000% come again

From the moment we walked in, the staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The service was impeccable throughout our visit—friendly without being overbearing, and always on hand just when you needed them. It’s clear the team takes pride in creating a relaxed yet polished dining experience. The food lived up to every expectation. Fresh, vibrant ingredients shine in every dish, from the beautifully presented starters to the generous mains. To top it all off, dessert was a true indulgence, a perfect end to the meal.

Everyone were very welcoming and the food was lovely. Teah was very lovely and put love into her job and made sure that she helped me with the menu and that everything was okay for us she checked on us and also made sure our little puppy was looked after. Will definitely come back again.

Bills is Bills...I don't expect the food to be exciting, but just solid and consistent. However, this branch has very good service and atmosphere is buzzing, even on weekdays.

Restaurant
The John Harvey Tavern is a charming British pub and restaurant located in Lewes, East Sussex. Situated opposite the River Ouse and near Harveys Brewery, it offers a cozy atmosphere with wooden beams, log burners, and a rustic feel. The tavern is known for serving locally sourced food and drinks, including beers from the nearby brewery. Visitors can enjoy a friendly ambiance, excellent food and drink options, as well as occasional live music or quiz nights.
Pretty much perfect! The beer was as fresh as you could possibly imagine. I guess they have a pipe running from the brewery across the road straight into the pub.
Clive L — Google review
A stunningly beautiful and very old tavern hidden down a side street in Lewes. It is fabulously pretty both on the outside and has exposed low beams on the inside. Very in keeping with the vibe of Lewes. Downstairs it has 2 rooms where you can eat and drink, and then upstairs it also has two rooms filled with bigger tables where you can eat and drink. It is a pretty big pub and offer a nice selection of food. Now the issue, service. Almost non existent. For the first 90m of our visit there were two young ladies serving and clearing for the whole building. As we were a leaving a gentleman joined them. As you can imagine this meant service was slow, very slow, painfully slow. We ordered food and it was 49 minutes from ordering to it arriving, and this was from a fairly limited menu. And the food was okay. £16 for a burger is an optimistic sum for what appeared on the plate. My over salted and only just warn chili was certainly not worth the wait. I now understand why they had so many seat available. So, I'd suggest a drink if you're not in a rush on a slow day, otherwise maybe wander on.

The Harvey brewery tap room. Very traditional old pub tucked down a side road, opposite the brewery shop. We only had beers, not food. Think we tried about 5 or 6 different beers, all good. And, if you like what you're drinking, you can pop across the road to the shop to get some to take home!
Michelle M — Google review
I "cut my teeth" drinking Harvey's best bitter some 50+ years ago. A proper family brewery for about 235 years. Casta and Madge love this bar which is basically their brewery tap. Full range of beers. Four out of the barrel and 5 via handpump.Gorgeous. Good wine. Popular food but drinkers welcome. Outside seating by the river Ouse where you can smell the malt from the brewery. Free wifi, no TV's. Function room. CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular. Cask Marque.

We had our wedding reception upstairs at the John Harvey. Anton made the whole process very easy to organise. We decorated their function room which looked great. They provided a 3 course meal and everyone loved the food. The staff at the John Harvey were very professional and I would not hesitate to recommend them.

What a beautiful little gem. My friend arranged a group of us to meet for a roast dinner here this last Sunday. It was honestly one of the best roasts I have had in a long time. My meal was perfectly cooked and you get your own gravy boat. The service was super lovely, warm and friendly. We had a fab time. Don't look this one by, it is wonderful.
Angie T — Google review
Wasn’t sure what to expect but the bar staff friendly. Our fish and chips were good, fresh fish, nice batter. Hot too. Thought some food prices were reasonable. The Sunday roast was a bit expensive at £21, but it looked ok. It’s dog friendly and the locals were chatty to us. Couldn’t say I could smell the malt from the brewery over the river, I could smell the men’s toilets tho! Our fault for sitting near the gents.
Angela S — Google review
A great choice of well kept beers as always. Didn't eat on this visit but the food is usually good. A shame about the music drowning out conversation and the strong whiff of urine each time that someone opened the door to the gents. We used to go there regularly when I lived in Seaford and they had no problem with the drains then.

Depot is a refurbished venue that showcases independent and foreign films, boasting a cafe, courtyard, and art gallery. It serves as a cultural and community hub, offering multiple cinema screens, live music performances, dining options, art exhibitions, and creative courses/workshops. This destination caters to families seeking a cultural day out or couples in search of an impressive date night.
I used to pass by here on the way to college way back in 2009-11. So, being informed there’s a cinema now I was imaging some tiny 1 screen establishment. Yet to my amazement The Depot Cinema and Restaurant is quite the modern spacious marvel! Stopping by for food before sitting comfortably to watch Conclave may be one of my favourite movie going experiences so far. The food was great and service very attentive. Seating in the cinema was cozy and felt like I was back home on my couch. I think The Depot is my favourite cinema now, the easy station parking for £2/day is also an absolute steal. Also, if driving is a chore you also have the train station a stone throw away. It’s hard not to recommend this one!

Went here to watch one of the film that was on during the week (Urchin) and had a wonderful experience. Very smooth process from booking online, arriving and interacting with very friendly staff. Then the actual theatre. Absolutely comfortable 10/10. Very clean environment; comfortable seating; and the sound system was perfect. Literally had a better movie experience here than I did at a much larger operated cinema 2 days prior.
Rajeve B — Google review
I really like The Depot. I love its "Indie" vibe and character. Outside seating, cafe, fab cinema spaces and relaxed seating. Four stars? It seems to take a lifetime to get a simple cafe latte. The latte is fine, but somehow the staff seem to always have more important things to do. Even when it's not busy. If it were a one-off, I'd let it go, but it's happened a number of times.

Lovely evening outside with live music, drink and food available. Saw a film but actually really disappointed with the film but nevertheless the venue is great. Oh, and comfy cinema seats, footstools in the front row and you can take your drink in with you.

Me and my best friend have come here every week for a year now and we have never have been disappointed. Staff are the best, always kind and helpful, absolute gems. Cake and coffee are immaculate as well as the food, such good quality and service. Amazing study environment outside and inside, we highly recommend the Depot and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Thank you to the staff x

Excellent small cinema. Always clean. Good range of films. Also has great food & drink but this area does get busy in the evenings & I don't believe you can book a table.

What a lovely venue and outside garden. 1st time experience. Love it here.We had a glass of wine as some had coffee. Very relaxing atmosphere with great vibes. Beautiful sunny day. Wish to sit in lovely garden but not windy. They’re offering variety of food, wine, beer & tea, coffee. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Table service as well as help yourself. Toilets were clean. It’s a very good meeting point. A beautiful gallery displaying beautiful artwork as well as a cinema for this lil town. Superb location just in front of Lewes train station. I'd definitely visit the Depot in Lewes again.

Flea & Street Markets
Lewes Flea Market is housed in a charming old Methodist Chapel and has been a hidden gem in Lewes since 1992. It's a gathering place for vintage and antique dealers offering an array of second-hand furniture, retro homewares, and unique antiques. Visitors can expect to find all sorts of quirky and interesting items, from nostalgic paraphernalia to one-of-a-kind pieces. The market is known for its friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere.
Amazing flea market full of vintage treasures. The prices are really good and the quality of the product is also amazing. Always find something I want every time I visit!
Sophie W — Google review
Lewes Flea Market is a true gem for those in search of unique and vintage treasures. With an extensive variety of items ranging from antique furniture and retro homeware to vintage clothing and rare collectibles, there’s no shortage of interesting finds. It’s a perfect place for anyone who enjoys hunting for hidden gems. However, the market’s layout could use some improvement. The aisles are narrow, and the stalls are packed quite closely together, which can make moving around a bit tricky, especially when it gets crowded. The sheer number of items on display can also feel overwhelming at times, and it’s easy to get lost in the chaos. A more organized setup would definitely help enhance the experience. All in all, Lewes Flea Market is a must-visit for vintage lovers, but the cluttered and cramped spaces can make it difficult to fully enjoy everything it has to offer. If you're patient and enjoy the thrill of a bit of a challenge, it's worth checking out!

The café also serves creative brunch and lunch options made with whole foods and local ingredients, catering to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. Visitors can enjoy the quaint charm of Lewes while savoring their coffee from Trading Post.
Great atmosphere, always super busy! Coffee is lovely and smoothies are great! Huge menu and veggie/vegan options are brilliant! Quick friendly service and facilities usually seem nice and clean!

Absolutely unacceptable. I was served a dirty and chipped glass filled with ice—beyond unhygienic. The cake arrived with no spoon, and the coffee was served without a spoon or sugar. Do you have any standards at all? For the prices you’re charging, this level of service is ridiculous. It’s no surprise the place was empty. You should seriously reconsider your approach to basic customer service and hygiene.
Pierpaolo M — Google review
We dined in, ordering two classic rarebits and mushrooms on toast. The rarebit description stated “marmite and cheddar sauce on toasted sourdough with roasted vine tomatoes, dressed rocket and herb oil” for £12.95. What we received was plain melted cheese (no marmite) on toast with wilted rocket leaves (no dressing). I spoke to the waiter and asked for the missing items - tomatoes and the dressing. He brought tomatoes over. We waited for the mushroom on toast but it never came, we asked the waiter, he checked on it. By the time he came back two of us had finished our food. He told us there has been a mix up but it would come. We told him it was too late and we received a refund for the food that didn’t show. Between the service and the overpriced, glorified cheese on toast we were incredibly disappointed by our experience and would not return. Edit: I returned to the cafe and spoke to the waiter and explained how I felt about the food. He gave me a refund.

Cafe/toilets/tables/floors/seating - all dirty. Pronounced staining on one sofa. I have returned chocolate brownies which are obviously old/stale. Tables rarely cleaned, often no cutlery/serviettes on table. Toilets can be in an awful state requiring immediate attention. Broken lock on toilet meant one customer banging on toilet door to be let out. I let her out. Staff not really concerned but this is not their fault as I’m sure they are being taken advantage of, just like the customers
Emma H — Google review
Best eggs florentine I have ever had. Some other reviews mention that it’s a bit pricey but I think you pay for what you get - the food and service is always 10/10. Staff are always helpful and friendly and I’ve never been dissapointed by anything out of the kitchen. Also they always have tobasco and the mono loco coffee is delicious.
M P — Google review
Incredibly okay experience. Staff seemed really apathetic, not that they need to be ecstatic at work but it felt like they all resented being there. Music was also so incredibly mediocre; Chappell Roan was the highlight (!) Drinks were fine. I hate when paper straws disintegrate so quickly though. The positives were the wifi and that they stay open until 7.
Colin L — Google review
My absolute favourite café in the UK! I stop here about 4 times a week for my morning latte or a lunchtime chatter/coffee, I feel like I can always run into some friends and have a chat. The Vegan English Breakfast is spot on, they also have plenty of gf options Sometimes after having a coffee here, and having a long run to Brighton I would end up again at Trading Post opposite to Infinity Foods. The staff is really friendly and sweet.

I love my Trading Post Hot Chocolates. The staff members now exactly know how I like them- with oat milk and hazelnut syrup. The coffee is lovely and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Pastries are always fresh and everyone from the team is so nice. We always recommend this place to our friends who visit Lewes

Squisito is a charming independent restaurant that opened in late 2022, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on Italian-style cuisine. The two experienced chefs, Harry and Chris, bring their expertise from working in Michelin-starred restaurants to create delectable dishes. Visitors have praised the friendly service and delicious fresh focaccia bread. The menu features thoughtfully prepared Italian dishes including freshly made pasta options at reasonable prices.
Wow. Walked in without a reservation on a Saturday and were kindly shown to a table, we didn’t know how lucky we were. The place slowly started to fill up, and so did our stomachs. Great service, and the food was very memorable. We will be back with a reservation :)

We went to squisito after a scorching summer Saturday. The atmosphere in the restaurant was electric but not overwhelming, as the charming restaurant manager swiftly took our order for drinks and talked us through the menu. The evening was perfectly paced, with delicious dishes like the best salami this side of Milan dressed with capers, to the rich beef shin ragu that was to die for! All of the pasta is made freshly on the day, and is served perfectly Al Dente. You could be mistaken for thinking you are overlooking a Tuscan vineyard as you tuck into the tasty treats on offer. I cannot wait to go back, and not should you!

Incredible pasta in Lewes, high quality fresh ingredients and large portions, we went with the intention of going for the set menu but the main menu had many more options that we liked the sound of and we weren't disappointed. Friendly attentive staff as well thanks so much!

We had our pre-wedding 'Friday night' meal for 11 of our close family and it was just absolutely perfect in every way. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with such enthusiasm and energy. Every member of the team was so friendly, kind, engaging and funny too! From the intimate set up, which felt like our own private restaurant, to the absolutely delicious food and impeccable service. We really couldn't fault it. We felt like everyone went above and beyond to ensure we had a really special and lovely time. Not only was the food simple but delicious, they had a great range of wines, interesting local beers and cocktails on offer too. I actually work as a wedding and event planner in London, and spend a lot of time working with various high end restaurants and caterers and I have to say, the service we received was the BEST I have experienced in a very long time, so the team really are an asset to Squisito!

What a lovely new place to stop for lunch in Lewes! The atmosphere is charming, the staff very friendly, and the food excellent. I’ve left 4 stars only because the wait was quite long — around 40 minutes for our meal. It may have been that we arrived a little early and the kitchen wasn’t fully ready yet. As everything is cooked fresh, I completely understand it can take longer, but a quick heads-up would have been appreciated.

Couldn’t believe the price of the cocktails and served in a rubbish glass. £13 for this…..sitting outside in a car park with tables at different levels. Waitress told us to take a photo of the menu and slammed them down. Never coming back.

Cafe
The Riverside Cafe Bar is a frequented spot, popular for take away orders. While it offers great seating arrangements and some outdoor options, it can get quite busy at times. Nevertheless, the food and drinks are consistently good. When the weather is cold outside, indoor seating is preferred. Table service adds to the pleasant experience, although take away has become the norm lately. Looking forward to dine-in opportunities in the future is common. The cafe boasts an impressive variety of delicious dishes and beverages.
This unusual little cafe shares a communal building with a fish monger, butchers and a hairdresser. The food is simple and delicious, I had the scrambled eggs and bacon on toast. We will definitely be back again.

Bread looks dry and slightly tough. Also you can see the photo it’s a moldy Vegetable fritter appears under-seasoned and crumbly. Mushrooms look overly oily or rubbery. Hummus is separating and looks like it came from a tub, not freshly made. Egg and tomato on the second plate seem not clean the grill and sad. Pita bread or flatbread also looks dry and chewy rather than soft or warm.

Day trip out to the lovely town of Lewes, popped into this cafe, to warm our cockles( as cold out) splendid service, ( despite being busy) staff very friendly and welcoming, food was very nice at a good price, Home made leak and potatoe soup which was very tasty, the cheese toasties that came with it were very crispy, I liked very much, a nice cheery place

Despite its name, this isn't really a cafe by the River. You would be better off going upstairs to the Brasserie for a decent table and a view of the river. Had the full English breakfast which was passable and the worst Iced Chai Latte I'd ever had where I took one sip and the drink just disappeared. Was annoyed with myself as found this Cornish pie place up the road with decent desserts as well. Keep looking around before committing yourself.

Do not eat here! I ordered a brie, spinach and chutney panini for £7. Already expensive but made worse by the meagre filling. I returned one half (photographed) as it had half a slice of brie, one spinach leaf and not even filled with chutney. The half I ate was marginally improved by an extra spinach leaf. I hate complaining, but I had to say something about this. The staff were very understanding but unfortunately were unable to offer anything other than a shrug and that this is how they are told to make it. I didnt requeat a refund as Id eaten half of it and one was not offered. The manager or owner really needs to make some changes here. Its pretty shocking for 7 quid! If you're in lewes and hungry I recommend going next door to here, to the bakery and buying a lovely bagel or roll for 3.75 (which I did afterwards).

Have visited The Riverside Cafe on many occasions, always helpful and nice staff. Good selection of food for brunch and lunch time either hot or cold. Also, very well presented on the plate. Small seating area, but always managed to get a table. Good value and service would recommend 👌

Simple but excellent menu. We had brunch today and it was perfect. Freshly prepared Welsh rarebit, lovely service and can't fault this lovely café, by the river.
William C — Google review
Overpriced and disappointing Riverside cafe has been great over the past few years, but recently it has been made overpriced. For example a simple milkshake now costs £5.95. Shocking! The seating area is nice and cosy but it definitely needs a refurbishment and you can’t really see the river. However the food service was quick enough, with the food being standard for a cafe.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Lewes, Dill Restaurant is a delightful gem that showcases modern British cuisine with an innovative flair. This cozy eatery creates a warm and inviting ambiance, making it ideal for any dining occasion. With an emphasis on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, Dill offers a culinary journey that highlights the essence of contemporary British fare. What sets Dill apart is its informal yet sophisticated vibe, where talented chefs craft intriguing dishes that are both exceptional and reasonably priced.
Absolutely incredible find! From the outside it looks very unnasuming and the inside is actually quite stark and minimalistic but this is absolutely not reflected in the quality of food. We ordered a selection of small plates and were blown away with every dish. The prawns and hake in particular were exquisite. The flavours and textures of each dish were so unique and so unlike anywhere else this side of Brighton. We can't wait to go back and try one of the sharing platters but we might have to still have a couple of oysters to start which were fresh and vibrant. So glad we took a chance on trying Dill!

This is what all the fuss is about. Special occasion Sunday brunch… doesn’t get much more special or delicious. Amazing value. The fish pie unlike anything we’d had anywhere, rhubarb crumble… literally everything was taken to a whole new level. Perfect for intimate meal or family get together. Very generous servings. Will be back

I went there with my son for my birthday celebration on Saturday evening. I was so glad I chose this restaurant. I had been recommended by my son and his partner, as being one of the best places they had eaten in. And from my own personal experience now, I can see why they recommend it. The service was second to none, warm friendly, gave me that homely Italian feeling . That you get when you go into those beautiful little village restaurants in southern Italy. As for the ambience of this place, it was warm inviting and calming you can see your food being cooked from your table. This to me is always a good sign, I have been in this industry myself, and this is always a good sign the food is going to be good. The food wow it blew me away, we went for starters of oysters in the three different ways on the menu. They were perfection the way they were presented, and the difference between each one blew me away. We also had the home made crisps with the smoked cods roe and seaweed. And several other dishes.each one was presented in such a beautiful way and the flavour combinations, were incredible to say the least. This experience just got better and better as the mains came out. We had opted to go for the small plates, and as my son had eaten here before, I gave him free range to pick all the dishes, I can't praise this restaurant high enough. I have eaten in some very good places, and as I mentioned have been a chef myself, and love to produce great food. How you guys have not got a Michelin star yet I don't know. This was the best meal I have eaten from any restaurant. I will return many times. Don't stop what you are doing it amazing 🤩🤩🤩

This is a small quaint and wonderfully delicious eatery in Lewes that can not be missed. Certainly heading towards Michelin stars. It doesn't matter what you order. It literally is spectacular whatever you choose. Go and be thrilled by their taste bud explosion. Staff and service were wonderful. Good advice on wine....we chose the Red Gamay, which was perfectly paired with eh venison. Blue cheese bites (melting in your mouth and what a taste). Did someone say Squash and compte Cheese soufflé? Yes, please! And raw tiger prawns that were so fresh it felt like they came out of the sea a minute earlier. Venison dish with four plates with additional assortment of yum. Then the white chocolate, passion fruit and giverbresd trifle. Look at photos for references. Can't wait to go back.

The oysters was perfect and the lamb was just amazing! I almost licked the plate. (The english cheese selection was also good, but I would have liked to get some information about where, what and order of eating.)
Ane K — Google review
The food is excellent...when it finally comes! We were a party of four and first in the restaurant. We were told that the food would probably not come out all at the same time, however, when three of us had finished our meals and the waitress was asking if everything had been OK we had to inform her that one of our party had still not eaten! She said she would chase the meal up but by then the restaurant was full and all the other tables were still being served their meals before us. It was really poor and ruined the evening. It was also pretty embarrassing for one of our party.
Chris K — Google review
We enjoyed a beautiful meal at Dill. Wine is fabulous (if a little on the pricey side), food delicious, with decent portions for a small plates restaurant, hearty bigger plates / sharing platters available too (we went for beautifully cooked duck, with sausage cassoulet, heritage carrots, pork belly and more). Desserts are very creative and delicious (I went for a dark slab of chocolate tart with stout ice cream). Overall it came to £90 per couple with a tip, including drinks, and for this quality of food and warm service we felt it was very reasonable. Dill is now undisputedly the best restaurant in Lewes, nothing comes close.

Absolutely incredible food, delicious flavours and huge attention to detail. Service was excellent too. The food was so good that I'd struggle to pick a favourite out of everything that I tried. Can't recommend Dill enough, seriously, seriously great.

Lewes Castle & Museum is a captivating 11th-century Norman fortress that invites visitors to explore its rich history and stunning architecture. Perched on a hill, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of East Sussex and the picturesque South Downs. As you ascend to the battlements, you'll encounter remnants from various eras, including the impressive 14th-century Barbican at the entrance.
Wonderful place to visit! Great little museum too. Castle is up lots of steps but a beautiful view at the top. Really sweet little place with lots of local history especially from the film and model village exhibition. Great archaeological finds from the local area too. Highly recommend!

There was more to Lewes Castle than I thought. you buy tickets in the museum and gift shop building , then a member of staff lets you into the castle it's self. There is quite a lot of stairs, so bare this in mind if you have mobility issues. once you've made the climb, there is a lot of information on the castles history. The view from the top is memorable.
Clive K — Google review
I had no idea there was even a castle at Lewes! Free to all today and I believe this weekend. Magnificent views of Lewes today from the top of the castle. The museum has a truly amazing model village where you watch a video about the history of Lewes. Somebody very talented put so much detail into it. Well worth a visit.

The admission includes access to the gatehouse and stairs leading to the tower overlooking Lewes. The views from both are impressive! The onsite museum though small has a short but informative video about the history of Lewes. We booked with a combo ticket for the Anne of Cleves house, too.

My first visit to Lewes, ostensibly to visit the Anne of Cleves House, but there's a joint ticket available to also visit the castle and I'm glad we did. It was fascinating, well presented and the interpretive material was excellent. The views from the tower are well worth the climb, highly recommended.
Claire — Google review
Beautiful historic castle with amazing views from various levels. Just be careful on the steps, especially when going up or down the spiral staircases inside the towers.
Thomas S — Google review
Really enjoyable place to visit. So much history to soak up. My only gripe is that, in my efforts to fully immerse myself in the period, wearing chainmail and full armour made the ascent to the top of the castle painstakingly slow. Why oh why when they built it didn't they have the forethought to put in either an escalator or starlift? Apart from this observation, it really was fantastic. The museum was child friendly so I learnt a lot.
Clive L — Google review
Lovely place. Not much left to the castle but a supporting museum, with lots of info. about the castle and the town of Lewes. You can climb to the top of both mottes. Cracking views of Lewes and the South Downs from the top! Nice gardens, staff, and a good price. Upgrade to an annual pass when you use Gift Aid.

Anne of Cleves House Museum in Lewes is a charming display of Tudor craftsmanship and history. The museum showcases furnished rooms, kitchen displays, furniture, and crafts from the time of Henry VIII's fourth wife. Situated in the picturesque town built into the slopes of the Ouse Valley, this museum offers a compelling look into vernacular Medieval architecture. Visitors can explore the legacy of Tudor craftsmanship while admiring the timber-framed Wealden hall house once owned by Anne of Cleves.
What a wonderful place. The house has been kept very much untouched for the most part. There is plenty to read and learn. The staff was very enthusiastic and pleasant. They did ask if I was interested in a combination ticket with Lewes Castle too. I had just been to Lewes Castle where they did not tell me about this option. The little tea room in the house too was lovely
Jessica — Google review
Great museum that is really a preserved house of historic importance. Obviously run by volunteers who care for this house and have the passion and dedication to back it up! It was inexpensive to get in and definitely worth it. The place veritably reeks of history and each of the rooms tell their own story involved with the life and times of Anne of Cleves, who we learn, might not have been Henry VIII's type, but did survive her marriage and became a friend to the King later on in life! There is a cafe on site but it was shut on the day we visited. However, the helpful staff directed us to a nearby garden cafe where we could enjoy our tea and cakes in the sunshine and reflect on our visit to this most beautiful of 'semi-hidden' historical wonders. Worth a visit anytime.
Ade — Google review
This house is larger than you think from the front. Personally I thought the rear was more stunning. An incredible building with an interesting history. 22 people lived the house at one point although it was divided into three and had a shop! The cafe has a lovely garden area to sit out. Delicious carrot and orange cake available today. A fabulous tapestry is on display, it had a Japanese/Asian style. It was free to enter today and I believe this to be the case this weekend!
Kay S — Google review
We visited this with the Lewes Castle combo ticket. Not a large site BUT very informative and well done. Recommended to include there is an adjacent cafe as well.
Ryan S — Google review
Well presented Tudor house, although I had not appreciated that Anne of Cleves hadn't actually lived in the house. Nonetheless, it was worth seeing, and the cafe was excellent.
Claire — Google review
A bit of a letdown. House has been cleared and doesn't show what it really would have looked like. The gardens are manicured and don't have any vegetables growing. How this is supposed to represent where 22 people lived when Anne rented the place out, is beyond me.
Stuart B — Google review
Lovely building with very informative signage. The history of the house itself, its structural changes, ownership etc was very interesting. The garden is fairly small but had a beautiful grape vine, medlar tree and quince bushes. Relaxing atmosphere. Well worth a visit
Judy B — Google review
You can see about 4 rooms of Anne of Cleves 15th century house (though note she probably never lived here). There are quite a few stairs, and it’s a bit of an odd layout. However, there are interesting items and signs about the house’s history, architectural style, and items from the time period. Tickets: They offer a combined ticket with Lewes Castle, and if you gift aid your ticket it is good for the year. Facilities: They have a small shop, clean toilets, and a cafe (though we did not visit these)

The Lewes Arms is a historic pub located in the heart of Lewes, boasting over 220 years of charm and character. Situated just moments away from Lewes High Street and the town's Norman castle, this enduring establishment offers a warm and convivial atmosphere. With a well-stocked bar featuring an array of beverages, including real ales, wines, spirits, and soft drinks, visitors can also indulge in locally sourced handmade pizzas along with fries and sides.
One of the reasons that I love Lewes is this pub. A hidden gem. A CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular and Cask Marque pub. A few years ago we hiked over fron Eastbourne and my sore feet were soothed by a few pints here. ( oddly, there was a Morris Dancer festival going on, hard on feet and hard on ears!) Casta and Madge were enticed by the pizza menu (10£ - 15£). I however had a Gales brewery ( Fullers) 3.6% Seafarer. A super locals pub. No TV's.

The salon part we went in was very small but their are other areas within. Its a good local friendly bar clean pipes as the beer was tasty. Its around the back of the high street up the top end of Lewes. Has its own pizza place next door which is connected to the pub as the staff were wearing the pizza T-shirts. Didn't eat there so cannot comment on the pizzas quality.

Cosy pub located just off the main streets of Lewes. Staff is very friendly and attentive and the vibe is really nice. Sadly the roasts weren’t as great (small portions, high prices, gravy was watery, etc). But will give that the benefit of the doubt being unlucky 😊Side dishes (cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets) however were fantastic !

Lovely little Lewis pub with great selection of beer including Harvey's. Chilled vibe with bean bags out front. They do good pizza too apparently 👍🏻

Go there every few weeks to have what used to be brilliant pizzas but for the last three or four they have noticeable shrunk in size and have far fewer toppings. Soon I fear they will all turn into small bits of garlic bread costing £20 a pop.

Brilliant little pub. Great range of indie beers, incredibly friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. Had dinner plans elsewhere but I almost regretted it as the food looked amazing. Also a really expansive menu. Tons of stuff on there including Louisiana Gumbo!
David C — Google review
First time trying this place on this bank holiday weekend. The decor is great and the atmosphere is upbeat and lively, very friendly crowd and in general with the customers. There is outdoor space on both sides of the pub, one is non-smoking, the other is larger but the tables were pretty old and knackered so we moved. The menu is decent, the food alright for a pub. Most mains are set at £16 which is fair but I do feel like the curry was like a premium ready meal, especially the rice that came with the beef madras I ordered. Mrs had spicy Cajun wings which she liked and the chips too were very good apparently, that sounds like a silly thing to mention but many places don't get the simple bits right but this did. The salad that came with the wings was not the usual token, basic salad you get a lot of places, it was much better. There are resident dogs in the pub and they're beautiful 😍 The pub doesn't stock typical branded beers/lagers which I don't mind as I like to try something new, the barman I spoke to was helpful in choosing a drink and it was very nice 🙂

This pub has a great atmosphere, the decor is eclectic and the laid back but professional service provided by the friendly team made this a lace I am keen to visit again. We had a good selection of dishes, the menu was quite extensive and most of us found several things that we wanted to order. The pub had two separate gardens and plenty of seating in the bar downstairs, although they were fairly busy it felt spacious and unrushed. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back next time we are in Lewes, Thanks!

Great pub with a good selection of locally brewed ales on keg and hand pump. Lovely food, good atmosphere, great beer garden and seating inside as well. I ate here with a friend and had the beef chilli, it was delicious. My friend had the smoked salmon and said her horseradish sauce was excellent. Friendly staff, a nice relaxing pub to enjoy good food and drink. Definitely worth making the trip to come back again.

Sushi takeaway
If you're on the hunt for a delightful culinary experience, look no further than Big Fish! This charming eatery offers an impressive array of fresh sushi that many patrons rave is among the best they've ever tasted. The owners, Alex and Lily, are known for their warm hospitality and genuine care for their customers. After a long day of exploring, indulging in their fish and chips is a must; diners have praised the perfectly cooked haddock paired with crispy chips.
This is my favourite food establishment in Lewes. I love sushi and have eaten in many a fine restaurant in many a fine city. But this - was a hoy to find in Lewes. Korean street food, sushi, and fish and chips. All exactly and the owners are just lovely! Since the first opened I have enjoyed their food. Always great quality and the sushi is just delicious. I highly recommend Big Fish and I always tell people to go check them out. Thank you for all my great food for the last few years!

Wanted fish and chips after walking all day. Google mapped fish and chips and this place had the highest rating so I went for it. Really nice. Chips were bang on and so was the fish. Haddock and small chips I had. Really nice staff and I waited 10 minutes for food. The sushi and other food choices looked wonderful, if I ever return I will give it a try. Not 5 stars because the pickled gherkin was not pleasant. Tasted like it had been in the jar for a long time. Parking is not great either. Not there fault. Highly recommend 👌
Mournivalof4 — Google review
I have never been able to shake the nagging feeling that sushi could be improved solely by the addition of one thing, chips. Thank god I no longer have to wonder as Alex and Lilly have bravely answered the age old question: what if a sushi restaurant was also a chippy. Extremely happy to have found this unlikely yet superb establishment. Not only can it's sushi compare with the best restaurant fare but it's an honest to god proper chippy as well, down to the pickled eggs. The food speaks for itself and Alex and Lilly are as cordial as local businesses owners come. Go and see for yourself, I implore you.

I have ordered food here every other week since moving to Lewes in Aug 2024 and I am always satisfied! Alex and Lily are so friendly and their food is fantastic. My husband and I have tried their fish and chips, various fried chickens, and a few different sushi options as well and we loved them all. I always need to complete my order with their brown sugar bubble tea too (my favourite 🤭). I grew up in Singapore where Asian food was abundant, so having such a quality Asian takeaway place so close by now makes me very happy 🥰

It doesn't look very promising from the outside but I was persuaded by the good reviews to give this place a try. Excellent fish and chips - I ordered huss, which was meaty and full of flavour, as it should be. Huge portion of crispy chips. I saw a sushi order being collected and that looked excellent too. A great local, family run place which I plan to return to. One warning - they don't take cards, so you either have to pay cash or arrange a bank transfer which is a bit of a hassle. .

Popped in Big Fish for the first time last night, had not had fish and chips for a long time and had a real ’hankering’. Was not sure what to expect but wanted to give it a try. So glad I did, was very, very good. Chips were great but the fish was fantastic. Crispy batter, that was not too thick, and a great sized piece of haddock. Big pots of curry sauce and mushy peas! They do have a bit of an identity crisis if you look at all of the different types of food that they sell but this experience has just made me want to try more of the menu. The lady who served was also really nice.

Lemongrass Lewes is a restaurant with excellent coronavirus measures in place. Despite not having a reservation, the staff kindly seated the visitors and provided them with a unique paper menu where they could choose their dishes and quantities. The establishment also required patrons to fill out a short form for track and trace purposes. The drinks and food arrived promptly, although there was a possibility of delays mentioned at the outset.
Found the place on google, decided to go in. We were asked if we'd booked (we hadn't, it was spur of the moment), but were still kindly seated. Their coronovirus measures are very good - interesting paper menu (limited) where you pick your dish and the quantity. Was also asked to fill a short form for track and trace, which was appreciated. Drinks arrived very quickly, as did the food given we were told there may be delays on the menu. Presentation blew me away - I'm used to takeaways and buffets, so the presentation here blew me out of the park. I had Pad Thai, my friend had Egg Fried Rice, and we shared a Chicken Satay (on sticks). The taste was fresh and absolutely delicious. Even my friend, who had ordinary rice, said it was delicious and more than just fried rice. Very well cooked. We were allowed plenty of time to eat and rest. I had dessert - a nice Thai coconut caramel pancake dish. Wasn't sickly sweet, and again, was delicious. Overall, I'd happily, VERY happily visit this place again. Outstanding food and very helpful/friendly hosts.

Disgraceful tapas lunch menu on Tuesday 9/11/21 - They were only serving the tapas menu & two of us for lunch ordered T9a £14 including a medium glass of wine but the main food component is served in a very small container (top right) with very little meat & mostly peppers. I ordered T15a Massaman curry including rice (£10) which used to be a mini version of the proper Massaman curry on the main menu (my fave dish to order & the same price!) but this was also served in the same small size container with rice & small salad but was unrecognisable as a Massaman curry! No flavour, tasteless scrappy very small thin chewy (shreddie size) pieces of meat. This is not what is served as a Massaman curry on the main menu. This is an insult to your customers & there are plenty of other places to eat.

Ordered £33 of food for takeaway. Sticky rice was completely overcooked and inedible. When we called up to complain we were told it was supposed to be like that and met with an argument. Portion size was also tiny considering the price; didn't even fill the container. Egg noodles and the spring rolls were lovely but the currys were very underwhelming. I've ordered green Thai and panang before and these were completely over flavoured and tasted very cheap. Not good. Shame because we've ordered before and service and food was excellent. We won't be ordering again. Shoddy customer service.

We were craving Asian spice & were not disappointed. So happy we visited Lemongrass, the flavours were spot on. We attended at a quiet time, food was fresh & nicely spiced. Good sized portions for the mains, did not have a starter so can not comment. If I'm back in the area, will definitely visit again.

Nice food feels authentic to me, but a bit pricey for the atmosphere.

A big shout out to Lemongrass. I took a friend there for her birthday and the food was lovely. We both chose from the Tapas type menu, and I was presented with a bowl of lovely red fresh vegetable Thai curry, crunchy corn fritters, spring rolls and rice and my friend had the green curry and sides, and all for about £28 for both of us. The staff were attentive and friendly and we also had 2 pots of free tea with the meals. Will definitely be visiting again.

Very good Thai and one of the few restaurants that's not a chain in Lewes. Quite an unassuming front of the restaurant so it's easy to miss, but once you're inside and down the steps it's quite a decent size and looks very nice. Ordered set menu C which is the most expensive of the set menus but also the one with most of things I wanted to eat on it. Food itself was delicious and I'm glad we decided to go there. The sea bass was done to perfection.

Indian restaurant
Takeout Restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an exceptional dining experience in Lewes, look no further than Shanaz of Lewes. Nestled right on the bustling High Street, this gem serves up authentic Indian cuisine that has locals buzzing with excitement. During a recent anniversary celebration, I indulged in their mutton bhuna—perfectly seasoned and paired beautifully with keema naan and mushroom fried rice, all complemented by a refreshing glass of Sauvignon.
Delicious curry served with a smile. Fantastic curry in the heart of Lewes, serving fresh delicious food at a reasonable price. As well as the fantastic curries, the nann bread was to die for I've never had such a brilliant nann. The vegetarian curries were tasty too. I would highly recommend this place for families and groups.

Truly delicious food and very kind and welcoming staff. We had a great pleasure to be able to dine in this place after hiking beautiful hills of Lewes

What a lovely find on a Tuesday in Lewes. Nice warm welcome and we had the best seat in the house. Nice atmosphere, music was nice and chilled as well. Popadoms came with a coconut paste which was amazing. Dhansak and a masala for the main course with a Peshawari nan, fantastic taste and flavours

Chose Shanaz after reading Google reviews - we were not disappointed. Waiting staff were very friendly and helpful (without being overbearing as can sometimes be the case in Indian restaurants!). The food was excellent and nicely presented. Plenty for vegetarians. We particularly liked that it was possible to choose the spice level (and they got it just right). Prices reasonable.

Don’t let the inside fool you. Despite it being in a basement, we’ve used this place as our yearly pilgrimage and it’s always been great. Staff were extremely good at hosting 11 people. The food was quick to come out and was proper nice too. If you’re wanting a tasty Indian, here’s the gaff for it. Yum.

The food was fine. However, I only gave it 3 stars because I felt that the food lacked flavour. With Indian food, I'm expecting flavours screaming out from the dishes. This was not the case. The sauce that I had with my chicken tikka based dish was lovely and creamy, but lacked flavour. For the first time ever I had to add salt. The service was excellent with efficient, friendly staff.

A pleasant atmosphere with attentive service, and a nice warm welcome. While the staff were courteous and helpful throughout the meal, the food itself felt really underwhelming. Chick tikka was a bit dry and tough, and the samosas and bhajis were almost certainly the frozen ones from a bag rather than homemade. It was just about ok, but lacking any flair or flavour depth to make it memorable or for us to want to return. Dishes were decent but didn’t barely above the standard fare found at average curry restaurants. Overall, a friendly place, nice atmosphere, good service, but not one that left a strong culinary impression.

Stumbled across this on a very quiet Wednesday evening however what a find! The food was amazing, incredibly tasty and fresh. The staff were friendly and attentive and would highly recommend.

Pub
Restaurant
The King's Head in Lewes is a traditional pub with wooden floors, low ceilings, and a decked garden. It offers modern food options and serves real ales. Its Sunday roast is highly recommended, with excellent quality food and friendly, efficient service. The roast options include chicken, pork belly, beef, and nut roast, all of which are delicious. The meal also includes plenty of vegetables, tasty gravy, pigs in blankets, and cauliflower cheese.
I had lunch at The Kings Head and stayed over night. The lunch was delicious and the pub had a good selection of drinks. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was really handy being able to store your luggage if you got there before check in. The room was very clean and comfortable. It had an amazing bathroom. The pub is in a very quiet location and it is an easy walk to the centre. Parking is a little tricky but we managed to find overnight parking in the NCP Eastgate car park. The location is very handy for the station.

Okay lewes pub with the standard fare on tap, nothing that isn’t mass produced though. Food left a bit to be desired, mcdonalds-level chips were disappointing and went cold very quickly and it’s a bit rich to get that quality and pay a lot for the privilege. Scampi was good, burger was okay. Wouldn’t eat here again I don’t think. Nice staff.

Stayed one night here. The location is fantastic, near everything but quiet and with great views to the castle. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was amazing with unique quirky features you'd expect from Lewes. Huge comfortable bed, great bath and shower, huge size. Kitted out with everything you need, including lots of tea and coffee! For the price, I thought it was unbeatable.

Can't rate Ollie and his team highly enough! My daughter held her wedding reception here this weekend and the whole experience was brilliant! Ollie and the team could not have done more to make the day memorable for everyone! Nothing was to much trouble and they went above and beyond to make the whole day special. Food was beautiful and they made every effort to accommodate several small children( they provided games and had Netflix on standby!!🤣) The rooms were also very comfortable and very clean with coffee makers and everything else you could possibly need!! All of this within easy walking distance of the beautiful town of Lewes! Thank you again I would highly recommend!

What a wonderful pub. We've just moved into the area and Una and Jake always welcome us with a smile. The food is fantastic, the range of beers great. There's always something going on, from the Open Mic nights and the Pub Quiz to Market Friday for al a carte fish and the Sea Shanty evenings. I highly recommend you pay a visit.

Lovely little pub in the beautifully historic Lewes. My Daughter and i walked over from Brighton and decided to rest here for a drink and light bites. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious and not over priced. Will definitely be returning.

Only popped in for a drink but enjoyed it in here. Excellent garden, especially good in nice weather overlooking the castle. Good value for our drinks too!
