If you only have 1 day to spend in El Puerto de Santa Maria, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
El Puerto de Santa María combines long sandy Atlantic beaches with a historic center of whitewashed streets, plazas and churches. It’s one of the key towns in the “Sherry Triangle,” where visitors can tour bodegas, sample local wines and watch traditional barrel-aging methods. The town’s waterfront and marina offer sailing and watersports, while tapas bars specialize in fresh fish and seafood from the Bay of Cádiz. From here, it’s easy to take a short ferry ride to Cádiz or explore nearby natural areas like Doñana National Park.
With favorites like Cadiz Museum, Castillo de San Sebastian, and La Caleta, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Las Olas Beach Club and Restaurante Romerijo (El Puerto de Santa María | Guachi) so you can get the best taste of El Puerto de Santa Maria while you’re here. Castle
Historical landmark
The Castillo de Santa Catalina is a 17th-century fortress complex located in Cadiz, offering stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and La Caleta beach. This historic landmark was constructed by Philip II as a response to the brief occupation of Cadiz by Anglo-Dutch forces in 1596. The castle now features exhibition spaces for modern art and hosts open-air concerts in its internal courtyard during the summer.
Another free site in Cadiz worth a quick stop. Beautiful views from here of the harbor and adjacent beach. A great place for some quick photos. The buildings house various rotating exhibitions of art, photography, etc.
Andrew H — Google review
Cádiz, Castillo de Santa Catalina, the castle is the oldest military construction in Cádiz city, and is a good example of historic preservation. Situated to the north of Playa La Caleta and Castillo San Sebastian, it is well worth a visit. Construction started in April: 1598, led by architect and military engineer, Cristóbal de Rojas. The castle was completed exactly 23 years later, in September 1621, at the end of Felipe III's reign.
Csaba B — Google review
Interesting walk through, great spot for the view, it's free entry so you can't be disappointed that there is nearly no sign explaining any history of the structure. It's been converted to an art gallery now, do you got that.
Micah W — Google review
Loved the 1643 chapel .fantastic view all along the walls .Has wee seats in good shaded era with great views.

Nice view from the castle. Free entrance. Good for walking.

The 17th century Castillo de Santa Catalina next to Playa de La Caleta in Cádiz, Spain, was built by order of King Philip II after the Anglo-Dutch capture of the city in 1596.
David S — Google review
This castle is underrated. Inside the castle, there’s a garden, there’s a museum, and there is a small chapel. When you go around the castle, it is a stunning view of the ocean and the beach. I took many videos so that you can see from a different perspectives. Best of all, it is free to go in. Enjoy the Beatles see use of the sea.
Wendy L — Google review
Stunning little fortress, with great views over Castillo de San Sebastian and the mainland with the added bonus that it is free to enter. Not sure what it will be like in peak tourist season, but in mid-November, I almost had the place to myself!! The Chapel is a must, especially if you spot the small staircase that rakes you to the mezzanine and gives you a nice view from above. The exhibition to the explosion of Cadiz is worth a visit and a poignant reminder of the disaster and work of the medical teams in saving lives.

Beach
Outdoor Activities
La Caleta is one of the four beaches in Cadiz, but it stands out as the smallest and most popular due to its location next to the old town and between two castles. It gained pop-culture significance as a filming location for a scene in Die Another Day. Visitors can relax on its golden shores, visit the iconic Spa of Lady of Palma, and enjoy beach bars.
A nice place to hang out at during a day trip to Cádiz even in late December! Kids run around with gusto, collecting seashells and pebbles
Oleksandr G — Google review
Pier has seen better days but it is a great little traditional beach. Nice for family's and news agents near by for drinks. Sand isn't the dreamy white stuff you see in pictures and almost feels a bit British.
Adam W — Google review
Great beach in the center of Cadiz. Enjoying our stay here today.
Sc. U — Google review
Located in beautiful Cádiz, it is an idyllic spot. The beaches, good food and rich history. Definitely plan on returning!
E M — Google review
Cádiz, La Caleta is a beach located in the historical center of the city of Cádiz. It is a natural harbor by which Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans penetrated historically. main attraction is its location, a scene that has inspired musicians and poets like: Isaac Albéniz, José Maria Pemán, Paco Alba, and Carlos Cano. It has been pictured in several films, such as 007: Die Another Day, Alatriste, and Manolete.
Csaba B — Google review
Not sure how typical it is there, but during our 2 days in Cadiz, water in La Caleta was very turbid (likely due to heavy rain in Andalucia couple days before our arrival). Also loads of seaweed😬 You find much better conditions on the south side of the walkway to the fortress. It has access to open Atlantic and water there is much clearer, but swimming conditions are harder due to higher waves. If you just want to play on the sand - it's a place for you, although we visited pre season and I can see it getting very crowded. Big parkings are available nearby, but be prepared for them to be full or if you get lucky, to dig deep into your pockets - 15€/day seems to be cheap in Cadiz😬
Aleksander R — Google review
Great beach. The water is calm but cold. There are toilets and showers.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Located in Cadiz, Spain, Castillo de San Sebastian is a former island fortress that has been transformed into a hub for historical exhibits, concerts, and cultural events. The castle offers stunning views of the Atlantic and La Caleta beach. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the coast to reach Santa Catalina Castle, the oldest fortress in Cadiz.
Great place to see Cadiz from a distance. No tickets needed. Due to its nature, I recommend checking tide times as it's a lot more attractive to visit during high tide😉 Ideal spot to watch the Atlantic during storms 👌🏻 We've been lucky on this front and saw it in very windy days🌊🌊👌🏻 It was interesting to observe huge difference in conditions between south and north side of the walkway. Could be difficult to make it all the way in and out without getting wet, so be prepared for a challenge during high tide on windy days😉
Aleksander R — Google review
A really cool place to visit. The views are spectacular and it’s amazing to see the history and style of the buildings. Free entry as well!
O W — Google review
A unique walk out along a causeway to the sparse remains of the castle. There are terrific views back to Cadiz old town and along the coast in both directions. The site itself is maintained but very bare and there is no information on what must be an extremely historic site.
Peter K — Google review
Another great spot to walk around, enjoy the view, but nearly no information other than a couple of very general information posters. But this seems like a locals spot to relax around, especially the narrow path to get to it. Small sand bars and kids jumping off the bridge into the water.
Micah W — Google review
We had a great family walk to Castillo de San Sebastian with 3 dogs. Comfortable weather and temperaturen, slightly windy on a summer day. Highly recommended.
Hans-Jørgen L — Google review
A decent boardwalk from the beach leading to the "castle", although mostly ruins with a platform circling the waters edge. All the same a very pleasant walk and great views back to the city and beach especially in the glorious weather we had.
Steve J — Google review
You can walk the grounds and go to the top for amazing views but you can't enter any of the buildings. I would've like a guided tour and seen the inside. Wear comfortable shoes!
Sunshine R — Google review
The Castillo de San Sebastian (1706) occupies a tiny island off Playa de La Caleta at the westernmost point of Cádiz, Spain. Its artillery was intended to protect the city from hostile ships approaching from the west. The castle is largely abandoned but still accessible to the public. The entrance is always open, inviting the curious to come in. It's on a small island off Playa de La Caleta, accessible via Paseo Fernando Quiñones. It's an interesting one-kilometer walk.

The Cadiz Museum is a combination of an old Franciscan convent and a modern building, housing an impressive 17th-century Spanish collection. The museum's history dates back to 1000 BC, making it one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It has been occupied by various civilizations including the Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs. The museum boasts a rich archaeological collection with artifacts from these ancient cultures.
Entrance is free for EU residents, including temporary residence permit cards. Although the description is mostly in English, a google lens app works just fine. Recommended to go check out the prehistoric collection of Cádiz.
Sangam P — Google review
Picture this: you’re standing in the heart of Cádiz’s old town, surrounded by history, and you step into a time machine disguised as a museum. The Cádiz Museum blew me away with its treasures, from eerie Phoenician sarcophagi to vibrant Baroque paintings by Zurbarán. The ground floor’s archaeology section is like a journey back to 1100 BC, with artifacts that whisper tales of ancient Cádiz as a bustling Phoenician hub. Did you know the male sarcophagus found in 1887 sparked the creation of this very museum? For just €1.50 (free for EU citizens with ID), you get access to this cultural goldmine on Plaza de Mina. Pro tip: bring a translation app, as some signs are Spanish-only. Also, check the website for current hours, as renovations might limit access to some floors. Don’t rush—give yourself at least an hour to soak it all in! What’s your favorite artifact here?
Anna D — Google review
Interesting collection of sculptures and artifacts from Roman and era before. It would have been also interesting if museum could include the history of transatlantic slavery aswell.
Pushpa P — Google review
Great experience. We went to the Hercules shop in town and bought a beautiful ring moulded from an original Roman ring. We were told that we could see the original in the museum. It’s free entry which was unusual for us! And the exhibits were gorgeous, particularly the display of jewellery and pottery.
O W — Google review
Although the place is undergoing extensive refurbishment due to filtration & humidity, the ground floor & third floor are partially open. Ground floor exhibits some Phoenician artefacts; Roman except the big marble sculptures & some objects from the time of the Caliphates in Andalusia. None of the great Spanish masters are exposed. The third floor has a nice collection of XIX century puppets, from a famous theatre.
Sabas C — Google review
Two 5th century BC Phoenician marble sarcophagi currently in the Museo de Cádiz in Cádiz, Spain, are thought to have originated in Sidon, Lebanon. A famous set of "Tia Norica" puppet skits, once used during the annual carnival of Cádiz, Spain, are ALSO exhibited in the museum. In one example the bull is getting the better of the bullfighter. Puppet shows are popular in Cádiz around Christmas.
David S — Google review
Free Roman archaeological exhibit, good way to kill the 20-30 minutes. Small exhibit.
IamTheRealDeliCinq — Google review
Surprised at how extensive the exhibits were. Some signs in English.. but you have signal in half the building to use Google translate. Interesting story of the two stone sarcophagus.. on man one woman but (spoiler alert !)... both with a man interned into them... what's the story there ?. Sadly the fine art on the 2nd floor is being renovated . But I thought the 1.5 euro entrance was well worth it just for the ground floor... we are museum junkies so spent probably 3.5 hours reading everything... but leave yourself an hour and you could get through and still have time for tapas close by.. enjoy.

Los Toruños Natural Park, also known as Parque Metropolitano Marisma de los Torunos, is a tidal marsh preservation area located on the Bay of Cadiz. It was established to protect the cultural and ecological heritage of the region. The park features wooden walkways, observation towers, and lookout spots for visitors to explore while walking or hiking. Additionally, it offers activities such as birdwatching, kayaking, biking, and picnicking.
As always phenomenal experience, you can never have enough of this park. It’s well maintained and plenty to explore and learn about nature.
MariaN W — Google review
A bit exposed. Not very pretty at all. It is, after all, a brackish flood plain. Only the toughest meanest plants grow here. Gravel dusty path, few places to sit, no shade, no water fountains. A shack where you can rent kayaks might be fun. The water flows but barely, so it can be smelly. The best part is the entrance building, cafe, and clean WCs. The parking lot across the street is gratis but pretty small, easily gets a queue. They place is very popular on weekends with nice weather (which is often here in Cadiz).

Lovely restaurant at the entrance! IF you Are near Cadiz, Go there! But beware of the Sun! The Metropolitan Park of Los Toruños and Pinar de la Algaida Marshes occupies an area of 1,000 hectares by the mouth of the San Pedro River. It is located between the municipalities of El Puerto de Santa María and Puerto Real, in Cádiz.

Restaurant
Located in the charming Valdelagrana area of El Puerto de Santa Maria, Las Olas Beach Club is a beachfront establishment offering sun beds and a vibrant atmosphere. While the food may not be exceptional, the club's prime location, lively music, and overall ambiance make it a recommended spot for beachgoers looking to enjoy live music and sunset views. Visitors can expect friendly service and the opportunity to indulge in craft beer while taking in the beachside experience.
Best beer i had beachside!! This guys craft beer and customer service is over the top! A must try when you come to Tamarindo!
Johan U — Google review
No comas aqui! La comida es inaceptable! The food was unacceptable! We ordered nachos which came with unmelted cheese and absolutely no flavor in the guacamole as well as the pico. We had to send it back. After realizing how outrageous the nachos were, we asked to cancel the paella before it came to the table but the servers said it was not possible. We tried to eat it when they brought it but we could not. The paella was sour and tasted like something in there was rotten so we told them and they still charged us for it. DO NOT EAT THERE! If i could give 0 stars i would!
Kyarah C — Google review
Great place to go during sunset. The drinks are actually quite nice and affordable. The staff is generally quite friendly, but sadly the service is very slow.
Felipe S — Google review
One of the few beach clubs in Santa Maria, it has sun beds and it’s close to the beach The service was good, the food is not the best but yet the location of the place, the vibes, music is great, recommended if you wish to have more fun on the beach, listen to live music while watching the sunset
Dania A — Google review
The prices are unacceptable. They charged us 35 euro for a plate of arroz negro with 5 shrimps in it. In the menu the price is 17.50.Also 16 euros for two non-alcoholic mojitos, ridiculous charge for bread service and veeery slow service. Do not recommend, any other place on this beach will give you better treatment and tastier food.
Maria Z — Google review
Terrible service, food tastes as garbage. Don’t believe they have a proper chef. Ordered Entrecôte well done and got it rare despite it got send back to the kitchen for a second round.
Sapan S — Google review
Friendly service and generally good atmosphere. We had an issue with our order however addressed the issue when we flagged it and offered us free drink. Place has live music which adds to the ambience.

Seafood restaurant
Restaurante Romerijo, located in El Puerto de Santa María, is a renowned family-run establishment with a long-standing tradition of preparing high-quality seafood. It has gained recognition as one of the culinary landmarks in the area and has played a pivotal role in the commercial development of La Ribera del Marisco, the city's most popular gastronomic district.
The seafood is fresh! You can tell it’s local and it’s good too. I ordered the Mariscada Guadalete with oysters and pulpo a la gallega. I recommend all of what I ordered, but to understand they’re prepared the Spanish style except for the oysters. The oysters are prepared like they are everywhere else. Service is amazing as well. Waiters are attentive and helpful.
Phil E — Google review
Restaurante Romerijo in El Puerto de Santa María is a standout for anyone who loves seafood. This beloved family-run spot serves an impressive variety of fresh shellfish, succulent fried fish, and traditional Andalusian tapas in generous portions. The informal, lively atmosphere—complete with a seafood counter where you can choose by weight—is perfect for casual dinners and group meals. Spacious indoor areas, shaded terraces, and private dining rooms ensure comfort in any season. The staff is professional and attentive, and the prices are very fair given the exceptional quality of the seafood. Whether you’re celebrating with friends or simply craving a delicious coastal feast, Romerijo delivers a memorable dining experience with a warm and welcoming vibe.
Simon L — Google review
If you like seafood this is a great place to eat. Our seafood gazpacho was delicious. The girl in the food display area was very helpful and recommended buying a selection of food there and then sitting down for any extras, as she said the choice there was bigger than on the menu. We didn't feel the need to do that but plenty of people did.
Geraldine F — Google review
Authentic and tradition is the right combination for this place. At Puerto de Santa Maria you have quite some offer, but this restaurant (sea food - fish and tapas) it just the fine result of keeping simple, great prices for better quality to enjoy the real deal of the Spain's South. The menu is quite diverse for either an special occasion or simply enjoying a quality time. Mariscadas - Sea Food - Fish and tapas are diverse and generous. The location with terrace and inner restaurant is great, the service even better, so a must if you aim for the full experience
Guillermo R — Google review
Superb fresh fried fish - we had boquerones and gambas, plus grilled razor clams. All delicious and super fresh. Plus tortillatas de camorones - best we've had. Great friendly service too.
Gareth P — Google review
Incredible local place with some of the best seafood I’ve had. You can go to the attached seafood market and choose from a huge variety of options (including 5 different types of crab legs) and eat at the attached restaurant. There is a line during prime hours but the tables turn quickly.
Salena-Lorine L — Google review
Fantastic sea food place, with outdoor seating. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the menu isn't necessarily pricey (unless you start ordering lobster etc.). Sharing platters are great. There is a large TV indoors where some people watched football (Spanish league). There's a really good atmosphere in this place. Very fond memories of this meal and evening. This restaurant seems to own the town, by the way, with about 6 branches scattered around offering different atmospheres. You can buy your seafood there in bulk to take home (cooked or uncooked) and they also deliver. Amazing.
