Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is known for its dramatic limestone peaks, deep gorges such as the Garganta Verde, and extensive cave systems. It’s one of the rainiest spots in Spain, creating lush forests of Spanish fir (pinsapo) that are rare in the Mediterranean. Well-marked trails make it popular for hiking and birdwatching, especially for spotting griffon vultures and other raptors. Traditional white villages like Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra add cultural interest with their historic architecture and local cuisine.
With favorites like Zahara de la Sierra Castle, Mesón-Bar La Peña D'Ely, and Bar Restaurante Las Cuatro Maderas, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like La Era and Bar Restaurante Las Cuatro Maderas so you can get the best taste of Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Municipal Recreation Area Playita is a charming natural pool nestled in a mountain, with a conveniently hidden road that can easily be missed. It's a popular destination, especially in late June when the parking lots are fully occupied. The water is crystal clear and refreshingly cold, surrounded by lush greenery and under a beautiful blue sky. It's an ideal spot for locals and families to escape to, offering laughter, playfulness, and the delightful melodies of singing birds.
Fab :) we visited on a week day, it wasn't too busy, I'm sure it would be busy on the weekend. There was parking available, and the guy in the carpark was very helpful. It cost €3.50 entrance, well worth it, its very well maintained, the water is lovely and clean, and there's plenty of spots to sit in the shade with a picnic. Felt very chilled, and safe for children. Lovely day out :)

I'm hooked, straight away got to my list of favourite places. Might be small and man-made but damn it's beautiful, with super clean, cold (yes!) water. Perfect for the 40 degree heat. Crowded, but bearable, during the summer weekend, an absolute bliss during the week. Bonus - restaurant serving really good menu del día with several choices at an excellent price. I'll keep on coming back, for sure. Bonus - free motorhome parking (not overnight though!).
Dawid D — Google review
Really nice please but very busy on the weekends. Coffee and restaurant very good food. We would love to do the Zip line but is not open yet !!! We hope they open soon should be a nice expirience
Paco R — Google review
Lots of shade and breezy when the area around is sweltering hot. Well equipped with a family area, cafe and bar and a restaurant. There’s picnic tables too, which you can reserve at the weekends, and play areas for kids if you have them. This is a cool spring water artificial lake that’s accessible and welcoming. Gorgeous setting.
Vera C — Google review
It's the best place for s swim in fresh water. They even have a bar and they way their staff is trained is amazing. Everyone is so charming and nice and I loved the way they made us feel at home. David and his team are amazing and the security guard Jose is also the most gente and kind man I have met in a very long time. I can't wait to come back and see them all again.
Stephy R — Google review
Very nice place with super clean and super cool water. It is really great in hot days. It is not natural place, as we tought, but still great.
Pavel R — Google review
Nice place for a day trip but parking is a dirt car park. The showers also dont work and the toilets dont have any toilet paper.
Paolina — Google review
A pleasant small nature pool has hidden inside the mountain. A side way out of mountain road where is easily skipped. It’s late June and the parking lots are fully occupied! That surprised me for the first time, but soon I understand the reason. Crystal clear cold water with green surroundings and blue sky, how lovely! A little escape for locals, families favorite spot. People laughing, children playing, birds singing... We enjoyed our picnic and swimming in few hours over here.

Zahara de la Sierra Castle, a key Moorish outpost strategically located in the Nasrid border, was part of a network of watchtowers and strongholds. The village of Isleta del Moro, with its population of about 200 people, is charming and worth visiting. The castle offers stunning views and requires good walking shoes due to steep slopes. It features an archaeological information center with glass floors and outstanding views.
This was the perfect setting for my daughter's engagement, at sunset at the top! The caretaker of the castle even let us stay beyond closing hours to let them continue celebrating. So special and kind. It was absolutely beautiful.
Christine S — Google review
Beautiful view from the top. Steep and slippery hike up on cobblestone so wear sneakers, but worth it. Stop in the visitor center to see the underground ruins.
Caysie D — Google review
Amazing views from the top. Compact castle with not an massive amount of things to see inside. But lete face it, most people don’t climb up for the artifacts.
T H — Google review
Quite the hike alllllll the way to the top but it had great views! And clean toilets. Rocky path is steep in areas and can be slick (yes, even when dry). Be careful!
Kate R — Google review
This is a “must” if you’re somewhere nearby Ronda, only 2h away from Malaga. We spent half a day there, exploring the charming town of Zahara and did the hike to the castle on top (3€ fee).
Katarzyna W — Google review
Well worth the visit, though it is a climb to the top, which is hard work in the heat of the day. There is not much shade on the way up. Some of the pathways and stairs are slippy underfoot, so wear grippy footwear. Excellent views.
Lucy S — Google review
What an amazing little village, and the walk up to the castle, and the castle itself offer fantastic sceneries. If you are in the area it's definitely worth also visiting this town!
Yannick B — Google review
Fabulous hilltop medieval town with ruin of castle on top. Park at the bottom and do a slow climb up, you will see pretty vistas and courtyards and street. Lovely church with beautiful baroque alter piece. Castle is well worth a visit, with a very helpful guy on the entrance

We did this hiking walk from El Bosque Town to Benamahoma. The entrance was not well signposted on the El Bosque town side if you are a tourist in the area, but we asked 2 local ladies who gave us ample instructions. This is a walk that you must not miss if you are in the area. The nearer you got to Benamahoma, the more beautiful the river became. The walk is fairly simple, although some areas might be more tricky if you have mobility issues. It was supposed to take about 2 hours at a comfortable pace, but we stopped several times to admire the areas and the beautiful birds. On reaching Benamahoma, there are public toilets very clean and well kept. Restrictions in the area are no swimming in the river or putting up picnic chairs, etc.
Annabelle C — Google review
Beautiful track, really worth it! You can walk in a circle, when you reach the botanical garden be careful not to walk down, there is a sign that you have to go down, but that’s directing you to a local bar. The gardens are closing @1500.
Sietse M — Google review
We loved this short route. We did it by road bikes (bad idea, we had to carry them most of the way) but it's a medium difficult path on foot. And the possibility of cooling yourself in the brook is exceptional! Just please take your garbage with you!
Viktor K — Google review
Excellent hike for most. Along the small river and lots of shade. Got busy mid day but not much people around 9
Andreas F — Google review
Awesome trail along the stream (officially a river) from Benamahoma to El Bosque, about 10 km round trip. The trail is shaded along much of it's route which helps keep it cool even on a hot day (is was 30+ degrees when we walked it but with the shade it was fine). There are some rocky sections and stone stairs so you need to be in reasonable shape but in general an easy trail.
Dave C — Google review
Nice and easy walk, very refreshing with a lot of shade. We were told that it can be very busy during the Weekends, so we went on Thursday and we didn't see many people there.
Laimonas G — Google review
Nice easy walk. Lot's of shade cover. Avoid at the weekends as it can get very busy.

Really beautiful

Fabulous Botanical Garden ! Plants clearly labelled and lots of information. Lots of orchids and springtime plants in flower. Such a well kept space ! I did read a review saying it was all dried out in summer 😂 it's the South of Spain, the flora here does it's thing in spring and early summer. It is free to enter.
Frangolalala — Google review
Cute little botanical gardens, great walk through with many wonderful plants, all superbly signed.
Dave S — Google review
I'm English but I lived in Ubrique for 2 years several years ago. I also attended some of the workshops in the gardens. I love this botanical garden and can spend hours here re learning the names of the plants in Spanish and re connecting with la Sierra de Grazalema every time I come back to visit the area.
Claire S — Google review
Boring and not well-kept so-called botanical garden. Most of the plants were dried out, and the best thing was that there is no entry fee. Do not consider driving far to visit.
Martin K — Google review
Lovely well-labelled gardens and free of charge. Just really tricky to get to and google maps isn't quite right on its directions. Otherwise a great hour and a half!!!

What a fantastic place to get artisanal sheep and goat cheeses, in a variety of flavors, ages, and treatments! Might be considered a little 'off the beaten path' for some, but their products are incredibly flavorful and worth it. As others have mentioned, they offer vacuum packaging for your travels... and it is just as awesome days and weeks later!
A.L. P — Google review
Great cheeses, as in many places in Spain. Probably a bit difficult to drop by them, as their shop is in the industrial area where they manufacture the cheese. Nevertheless, they have many options all vacuum wrapped, many of their cheeses won international prizes and the taste... Ohhh the taste! 🤤

Bar Restaurante La Era is a bar and grill that offers a variety of dishes at reasonable prices. Their fresh octopus salad, known as ensaladilla de pulpo, was satisfactory, while their tosta solomillo was superb. The carillada was also decent. The affordability of the menu aligns well with the quality of the food. The generous portion sizes and swift, friendly service were highly appreciated by customers who visited for lunch during the school holidays in April.
We had a wonderful dining experience at La Era. We ordered the risotto, Spanish tortilla, and a selection of mixed croquettes. All the dishes were absolutely delicious — flavorful, well-prepared, and beautifully presented. The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive, which made us feel very welcome. The ambiance of the restaurant is cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal. Highly recommended!

Lots of locals here. Excellent, friendly service. Reasonable priced. Opening/closing times vary day-to-day. Suitable for drinks or casual dining. Favourite in ZdlS.

They are very nice and knowledgeable about celiac. The owner is a young man and speaks English very well. Our server, Stephanie was a younger female who also knew a lot about celiac and spoke English pretty well. The fries are GF, also you can have any salads, fish and meats. Additionally, they gave me a packet of GF crackers when they served my family bread. My husband and daughter are not GF. She had the chicken nuggets and he had the Gamba- they both said their meal was amazing!

Travelling alone. Reserve a table! La Era has excellent service, food and athmosphere. One of the waiters speaks very good english and what the others might lack in language skills, they make up for with their excellent service attitude. I got a table without reservation, but all tables seemed reserved. So book a table or prepare to be disappointed.

Bar Restaurante Las Cuatro Maderas is a delightful spot that truly stands out in the heart of town. Upon entering, you're welcomed with warmth and friendliness, setting the tone for a wonderful dining experience. The menu offers a variety of delicious dishes at great prices, ensuring there's something for everyone. Diners rave about the homemade options like cheek, meatballs in tomato sauce, and croquettes—each dish crafted with care.
(Translated by Google) Good treatment and service in the center of town. Close and friendly staff. Varied menu and very cold beers to choose from. Good bread and very good "sucking" olives (by the way, I ate them all before taking the photo). Near the municipal swimming pool and there is usually parking nearby. It's worth coming to try. It is very economical and you can pay by card. (Original) Buen trato y servicio en pleno centro del pueblo. Personal cercano y amable. Carta variada y cervezas a elegir muy frías. (Translated by Google) They serve quickly, friendly waiter, good price, but for my taste... most of the garnish is typical fries, the pijotas... too fried, stiff. The chicken cheese sauce is very delicious. The scrambled eggs...some chorizo tasted rancid and the black pepper was very fried. The bathrooms are spacious but not adapted for people in wheelchairs, old but clean. Inside there is no access step but it is very narrow. There is no background music.

Exquisite. The best meal of our six days in Andalusia. Every single item was delicious and the server (the owner?) was so friendly and helpful - he went the extra mile in terms of helping us through our limited understanding of the menu. Recommend 100%

This restaurant was buzzing when we went for lunch on Saturday. We got there early as they don't take reservations and we were lucky to get a table. People were waiting patiently on the pavement for a table. The food is amazing. We had artichoke and spinach salad with walnuts and black aioli, steamed cockles and a beautifully cooked, fall off the bone leg of lamb with garlic and chips sprinkled with sea salt. The waiting staff, although rused off their feet, were great. We'll be back.

Mesón Los Estribos is a modest and pleasant restaurant with a veranda that offers stunning views of the lake, suspended above the village. The staff is accommodating, as they were able to adjust dishes for dietary preferences. The menu includes options like fried potatoes, meatballs, beans, tripes, gazpacho soup, chicken and chips, fried fish and Tocin de Cielo for dessert. The food is simple but flavorful and reasonably priced.
Went for some lunch we had gazpacho soup. It was cold so I sent it back..... Lol! No just kidding! it was really good. I had chicken and chips, fried fish. Very tasty. Could have had pudding but we were stuffed. All for 9euro each. Good value. Nice waitress quick service and a view to die for looking over the aqua blue reservoir. Just do it! Layton and Jill. 😉

The view is amazing, but the food is just ordinary. There are better places where to eat. A beer here would be nice just to enjoy the view
Alessandro M — Google review
Great lunch with an amazing view. It offers a 10 Euros menu for lunch. Worth every penny of it. Instead of the french fries you typically find on menus for 10 Euros, they serve fried potatoes. A good change of pace. Otherwise all the typical items like meatballs, beans and tripes...are available and done well. Friendly service. This restaurant is at the top of the village. It is well worth the extra climb. Would recommend parking your car at the entrance of the village unless you like to navigate on steep and narrow streets.
Franklin Y — Google review
The food was good (especially the chocolate mousse!), but not spectacular. I had a salad which I could not add oil and vinegar to, because the bottles for these were so dirty and slippery that they could not be removed from their holder. The soap dispenser was broken. Service was quite awkward. View is good, but it was a bit cold inside.

The flavor was amazing. The codillo has the best seasoning I had in Spain. The wine was top notch. And the price was good! Also the view. The entire family agreed it was our best meal in Spain.
