Nestled along the banks of the Guadalete River, Castillo de San Marcos stands as a magnificent testament to history and architecture. This medieval fortress, constructed in 1260, boasts impressive crenelated walls and towers that rise majestically against the vibrant blue Andalusian sky. Originally built atop a 10th-century Islamic mosque, this remarkable site has layers of history woven into its very fabric—from Roman remnants to Phoenician artifacts.
Fabulous self-guided tour using your smart phone for €10 each means you can take your time and visit this wonderful landmark at your own pace. The commentary is excellent - informative and detailed with beautiful sights. Climb to the very top of the castle for amazing 360 views.

The Castillo de San Marcos is a historical gem in the heart of El Puerto de Santa María. Its blend of Christian architecture and Muslim remnants makes it a fascinating place for history lovers. It is very well preserved and offers guided tours that reveal its intriguing past, from its origins as a mosque to its transformation into a Christian fortress. The surroundings are pleasant and it's close to other points of interest, making it an essential stop if you're visiting the area. Additionally, the staff is friendly and provides valuable information during the tour. A highly recommended experience.

Well worth a ferry ride for a day trip from Cadiz. Very interesting site well presented and the English audio guide was amusing to listen to. Get lost, don't follow the numbered exhibits and you absolutely must climb up to the top of the tower... if you're fit.
Michael V — Google review
Visited the castle, which is quite compact. Some interiors that can be viewed, inner courtyard and exteriors. Highlight is going up to the roof of the castle where one tower was open as well to be climbed to the top. All in all a nice castle to visit, that does not require too much time.
Stein D — Google review
Great castle tour. Self-guided with audio via QR code. Amazing views on top of the city and ocean. Opportunity to sample wine at the end.

Castillo de San Marcos is located in El Puerto de Santa Maria. It’s a beautiful mosque/church/fortress/castle all rolled into one! The stained glass, arches, art, towers… are well intact and so nice to see. Plus, climbing to the top of one of the towers provides an awesome view of Puerto and out to sea. The audio included with your entry tour is quite interesting (so bring headphones). The gals that are at the entrance are always so nice too! Be sure to visit this castle whenever in Puerto!

Iglesia Mayor Prioral, located in Plaza de Espana, El Puerto de Santa Maria, is a stunning Gothic church with elements of Baroque architecture. Construction began in the 13th century and was completed in the 17th century after being damaged by an earthquake. The church is dedicated to the Virgin of Miracles and features religious iconography inside. It was built with sandstone from San Cristobal and commissioned by the Dukes of Medinaceli.
Loved this church When we were approaching it was loads of people milling around and we soon realised it was a religious parade as they had just taken a festival icon into the church So we had playing recorders and drums creating a marvelous atmosphere We were able to look around church as the people took the procession outside to a tumult of music The church itself was full of icons used in religious festivals which I have never seen so close up before So if you are in Cadiz I recommend you visit this church first as it's full of history and so beautiful And it's free to get in

From the outside it is maintained work in progress, inside lovely to walk around

Lovely church to walk around . Watched the "Solemn Procession" through the town on the previous Sunday , so it was good to see the various religious artefacts used then .

Monasterio de la Victoria is a hidden gem in Andalucia, located just outside El Puerto de Santa Maria. This 16th-century convent, originally built by the Dukes of Medinaceli, has a fascinating history. It has endured raids and natural disasters and has served as a cloister, hospital, and prison over the years. The site is well-maintained and offers free admission for visitors to explore its intriguing past.

(Translated by Google) 16th century monastery ordered to be built by the Dukes of Medinaceli and handed over to the Order of the Minimums of San Francisco. Gothic in style, it preserves the imprint of the Cistercian convents. The most notable thing is the entrance to the church and the cloister, although currently everything is in very poor condition and with unprofessional restorations and patches, despite being declared B.I.C. The monastery went through various uses, the best known for penitentiary use, the well-known Penal del Puerto, which is why it has been declared a Place of Historical Memory. Today underused as a cultural space and with a dirty and neglected environment.

(Translated by Google) The Monasterio de la Victoria in Puerto de Santa María is a historical place of great architectural beauty. It was founded in the 17th century and has witnessed numerous events over the centuries. The monastery has undergone various transformations throughout its history, but retains its original essence and its imposing presence. Its stone walls, decorative details and tranquility make this place an ideal place to take photos. Last weekend I had the opportunity to visit the Monasterio de la Victoria during a bodybuilding event. The combination of the ancient architecture with the muscular, toned bodies of the athletes created an interesting and eye-catching contrast for photos. The lights and shadows of the monastery gardens, the ornamental details of its doors and windows, and the serenity that is breathed in its interior rooms are perfect elements to capture in images and create unique compositions. Without a doubt, the Monasterio de la Victoria in Puerto de Santa María is a wonderful place to take photos and enjoy the history and beauty that emanates from its centuries-old walls. I recommend it as an ideal setting for any photography lover.

Playa de La Muralla is a small and relaxed beach in El Puerto de Santa Maria, offering views of castle ruins and waves. It's a popular spot with nearby restaurants where you can enjoy drinks on the beach. The route to the beach takes you through paved streets with beautiful sea views, and in summer, amenities like lifeguards, kiosks, showers, and bathrooms are available.
This is by far the best beach in El Puerto de Santa Maria. It is clean and the sand is as soft as it can be. The vistas to the old castle and Puerto Cherry are awesome.
Oscar B — Google review
Puerto Santa Maria is spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches - there's a beach to suit almost anyone's tastes - sport, sailing, beach clubs, wilderness, privacy, dog-walking.... Playa de la Muralla is one of my favourites. A picturesque crescent shaped beach of golden sand which is pleasantly sheltered from the Atlantic winds. It's also framed by the walls of the Santa Catalina castle at the western end. From Puerto Santa Maria it's about a 45-60 minute walk along the coastal walking/cycling path which passes by Playa de la Puntilla and Puerto Sherry in addition to some shaded forest if you want to escape the sun. If you're driving there's plenty of parking. On the eastern side there are several places to eat and get a drink and they all offer views overlooking the beach. It can get busy so if you want to snag the best spot you may want to reserve a table.

Nice, locally popular beach. Reef in front protects it from waves, so good for small children. Also protected from eastern winds. Southwestern winds can be quite strong though. Facilities include 2 showers, plenty of trash cans and complete beach sand cleaning by tractor in the morning. Car parks and restaurants with nice terraces right next and above the beach.

Los Toruños Natural Park, also known as Parque Metropolitano Marisma de los Torunos, is a tidal marsh preservation area located on the Bay of Cadiz. It was established to protect the cultural and ecological heritage of the region. The park features wooden walkways, observation towers, and lookout spots for visitors to explore while walking or hiking. Additionally, it offers activities such as birdwatching, kayaking, biking, and picnicking.
As always phenomenal experience, you can never have enough of this park. It’s well maintained and plenty to explore and learn about nature.

A bit exposed. Not very pretty at all. It is, after all, a brackish flood plain. Only the toughest meanest plants grow here. Gravel dusty path, few places to sit, no shade, no water fountains. A shack where you can rent kayaks might be fun. The water flows but barely, so it can be smelly. The best part is the entrance building, cafe, and clean WCs. The parking lot across the street is gratis but pretty small, easily gets a queue. They place is very popular on weekends with nice weather (which is often here in Cadiz).

Lovely restaurant at the entrance! IF you Are near Cadiz, Go there! But beware of the Sun! Bodegas Osborne is a historic winery located in El Puerto de Santa Maria, known for its long-standing tradition of producing sherry wines since 1772. Situated in the urban bodega quarter Campo de Guia, this area holds most of the bodegas that were established between 1820 and 1830, showcasing the industrial history of wine production during the 19th century. The warehouses in this quarter are characteristic of that period and add to its historical charm.
Lovely grounds. We had a fantastic guide who spent a lot of time educating us. He had a real passion for the Bodega and his work there. Delightful afternoon
John M — Google review
Had a lovely guided tour of the Osborne Winery. Knowledgeable hostess talked us through the history, the process and the modern marketing. All rounded off with a lovely tasting session . We paid €35 each. Well worth it, particularly if you like "Cherry"!
Miles H — Google review
I think we were unlucky. Though the multilingual tour guide was very informative & helpful, the opposite has to be said for the obstreperous & simply rude women at reception. No attention was given to there being in our group a winemaker, 2 wine experts & a whisky producer-we were told "No, we couldn't try (& buy) 1 or 2 other wines". But we could pay an extra €40 for another tasting. And 2 minutes later we were told there was an event happening in the same space and we'd taken up too much time! Just extraordinary behaviour
Robert B — Google review
Great guided tour, very interesting and then we were allowed to taste the 5 different wines we'd learnt about, beautiful old bodega, well worth a visit, you must book in advance.
Lana R — Google review
The best thing about El Puerto! We signed up for a guided tour of the bodega at 10 am in English, it was very informative - mainly about the history of the bodega, how sherry is made and tastings at the end. They are very generous with the sherry tastings and it’s totally worth the 14€. The museum inside is also really interesting! You also get to see the “cathedral” as they call the room where they store and ferment the sherry.

This was a highlight of our trip to Cadiz. The bodega was beautiful and the tour very well organised. The fact that both the shop and the on site restaurant are neither tacky nor touristy just made the whole experience fantastic. Playa de la Puntilla is a wide, sandy beach popular for water sports like surfing and offers a promenade and adjacent pine trees. It's the closest beach to the downtown area, making it easily accessible. The beach is very clean with lifeguard stations providing good security, making it ideal for families. While entering the water can be challenging due to shells and algae in some areas, the overall atmosphere is calm with small waves.
Beautiful place in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Provincia de Cadiz. There is a long promenade that takes you all the way to Puerto Sherry.

Dirty! Cans, bags, dog dirt. Like the rest of this town, which the most dirty we have seen in many years of coming to Spain. No one picks up dog dirt in town, rubbish is thrown everywhere, and a large part of the old town is derelict old housing. I wouldn't swim on the beach, the water is filthy. The locals have no respect for their town.

When visiting El Puerto de Santa Maria, a must-see attraction is the Centro de Interpretación “El Puerto de los Cargadores a Indias”. This site showcases the Casa de los Cargadores de Indias, which represents the typical residence of wealthy merchants involved in trade with the New World. The building features an Andalusian patio adorned with colorful plants and tiles.
We wisited the Interpretation Centre of Cargadores a Indias on July 1st, 2025. We are a couple from Hungary and were curious to learn more about the local history. The exhibition was very interesting and well explained. Fernando, the young man at the reception, was very kind and took the time to explain everything slowly, whitch we really appreciated. It was quite hot inside, though - air conditionwould definitely improve the expeience. Still, the visit was absolutely worth it. Andrew

(Translated by Google) We went because it was above the tourist office. Some rooms with information on imports and exports, typical costumes from a few centuries ago. Maritime navigation information. Shopping routes and architecture of the port of Santa Maria now and in the past. It is a good review of these topics, however it is a bit lacking in content and somewhat monotonous. The building is very beautiful. Still, it has been interesting. (Original) Fuimos porque estaba encima de la oficina de turismo. El edificio es muy bonito. Aún así, ha estado interesante.

(Translated by Google) Opposite the castle of El Puerto de Sta. Maria is the city palace of a merchant who traded goods to and from the "Indies" of America. The tourism office is located here in the front area. The museum housed in the palace tells a lot about the everyday life of the Indian travelers. Both that of the travelers and those left behind. Films with English subtitles convey a lot of knowledge and make the time come alive in the mind's eye. To my surprise, I was not charged an entry fee. I very much hope that this was not a misunderstanding on my part, because maintaining such an exemplary house is not cheap.
