Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre is an English Heritage site located in England. The fortress features stone walls and a museum with exhibits on Roman life. Visitors can bring their dogs on a lead to explore the extensive grounds, which were once the beginning of Roman rule. The site offers guided tours and is suitable for families with children aged 4-8, offering educational experiences led by knowledgeable staff and volunteers.
Had a fantastic time in brilliant weather at the fort. English Heritage, Staff were helpful and informative. The audio description was very useful.

Theres not a huge amount to see here and only made worthwhile for us being cadw members. However its still a nice and well kept site in peaceful surroundings in the countryside. The lady in the gift shop was nice and polite .
High M — Google review
Before entering I read a review which said there wasn’t much here - well it depends on expectations! I would recommend the guidebook to get your bearings although the usual panels are available. The site is quite big and is a really interesting one for those interested in Roman Britain, Richborough being an important port. It was easy to imagine what the site looked like through the centuries. Really enjoyed this one! Recommended!
Hannah — Google review
Part of the English Heritage ... well worth getting a subscription if you are in Kent there are so many EH sites to see Richborough has a great audio guide so you get an expert to explain how the buildings were constructed and used. There is also a small exhibition showing artifacts from the site. Amazing how far it is now from the sea considering it was build at the seafront (the coast had moved not the fort 😀)
Emma D — Google review
I didn’t realise this was an English Heritage site so was pleasantly surprised when I came here. My friend and I were greeted by a friendly member of staff whom offered me a discount to become a member. I am now! There is a museum here as well which was very interesting to look through. You then go out and can have a leisurely walk around the fort. A whole wealth of information on the boards as well. Fascinating to know this was the gateway to Britannica!! There is a car park here but it’s free. Added bonus is there are toilets here. Now these are compostable toilets, your waste helps the planet! Was weird not flushing though 😂 I would definitely come back here again. As a Roman history lover it is a must see. Thank you for an enjoyable experience!

Really enjoyed our first visit. What a great little hidden gem. We found the staff extremely helpful and friendly. Particularly Lindsay and Neil. Thank you so much.

Had a lovely visit here this weekend. Such an interesting site. Nice little museum and accompanying audio guide. Very friendly, kind staff. I was also lucky that there was a very knowledgeable guide ( Jonathan who is normally at Deal Castle.) to chat to,who was able to answer my questions and enlighten me on what life would have been like at this fascinating site. I was also able to take my dog along which is always a bonus. Well worth a visit.

If you are interested in Roman history then this is for you, Richborough is where the Romans first landed and built a fort and town, a lot of interesting history, easy to get to and a good couple of hours, well worth a look

Empire Cinema Sandwich

Movie theater
Step into the charming old town center of Sandwich and you'll come across the Empire Cinema, a historic gem dating back to the 1930s. With its original neon lighting and Art Deco architecture, this cinema exudes a nostalgic charm that transports visitors to a bygone era. Despite its vintage appeal, Empire Cinema continues to screen the latest mainstream releases alongside monthly classic films.
Very reasonably priced, nice and local for me. Could do with a lick of paint but has a lovely old fashioned feel. Will definitely be back, it's brilliant that we still have a cinema here with so many closing
Kay — Google review
Went here for a birthday party and we were expecting something else! Such a cool old school venue. Would 100% recommend as am event space or just to go to the pictures.
Georgina R — Google review
Lovely, quaint nostalgic movie theatre. £5 matinee. Friendly service. As one might anticipate, the seats weren’t super comfortable, but the experience was enjoyable all the same.
Susan L — Google review
Smashing little old fashioned cinema that is a slice of history. Although it has only one screen, it still shows the latest big hits and at a third of the price of the big chains. Ah, it takes me back to my childhood!
Michael L — Google review
Really good little cinema. I remember it from school. Seats comfy for the age of the place. They show up to date films. Recommend

Family gathering to celebrate a birthday party. We were a little disappointed to find our booking made in Feb 2022 had not been booked. We were however allowed to have use of the lounge. Due to the booking error first impressions it was untidy, bar area was dirty there was no paper towels, toilet roll in the toilets. Edward who dealt with us on the day, helped out as much as he was able. Due to this it tainted the experience as it was not as organised as we would have liked. That said the gathering was enjoyed, we were able to bring our own food and drinks. The building was as expected, beautiful looking but tired inside. Though we had the issue with the booking, we would try the venue again.
Jane F — Google review
Caught a matinee with the kids. Did try buy tickets bit in advance but they were closed. Wasn't necessary as just us and one other couple in. My son thought was a bit creepy inside- but he is quite sensitive ha- perhaps the red lighting and old decor. Cold drinks would have been good. Picture and sound was fine.

Restaurant
The Toll Bridge Restaurant & Bar offers a delectable menu featuring smoked meats, grills, and seasonal fish with a unique twist. The surf and turf bento box and ox cheek come highly recommended. Despite its name, the restaurant doesn't focus on sandwiches. The service is exceptional, with friendly and thoughtful staff who go above and beyond to cater to your needs. Located by the river, the restaurant provides a great dining experience with an option for off-menu items offered by the chef.
We held our wedding reception at the Toll Bridge. Shane and his staff were amazing from start to finish. The food was incredible, we started with Canapés then Shane did a BBQ on the Terrace, Beef Brisket, pulled pork, Turkey breast, pork ribs, beef burger sliders and skewered salmon and squid which was by far the best l've ever tasted. Shane is very passionate about his food and it showed. All this was accompanied with a home made buffet salad, again delicious. Later Shane prepared home made sandwich platters, delicious. Shane also made us a cake for dessert. The venue is maintained to a high standard and the staff were so accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for our special day. All ours guests had a wonderful time and no one left hungry. The Toll bridge is perfect for a special occasion of any kind or try it for lunch or dinner. You won't be disappointed. Thanks again Shane and your wonderful staff

This is a cosy upscale pub-like restaurant. Our waiter was friendly and cheerful. The food was very good....so why only 3 stars? We decided to have cheescake for desert and asked for some ice cream with it. Our waiter told us that "the chef can be difficult and probably won't agree to give us ice cream". I said, you've got to be kidding and asked him to tell the chef I'd like ice cream with my cheesecake. Well, the cheescake turned upon without ice cream. The waiter was apologetic, however said the chef wouldn't do it and went on to say that recently he refused to give a customer a bowl of ice cream. This may seem like a small thing, however I find it incredible that a restaurant would spoil what otherwise would have been an excellent experience by refusing to sell us a spoonful of ice cream... EXTRAORDINARY! I therefore can't give them more than 3 stars...

Popped in for coffee, ended up staying for a very long and enjoyable lunch in the sunshine. The welcome and service was fantastic and despite being short staffed due to illness and 8 of us in our party we were looked after really well. The menu is great, so was the beer and they are very dog friendly. Lots of pay and display parking, but we parked at the sea and walked into Sandwich, which is about a 4 mile round trip crossing the golf course (but there is a £10 per car toll).
Paul D — Google review
Such a lovely experience at The Toll Bridge We popped in and had a drink in the delightful courtyard on a sunny afternoon prior to going back later for dinner. The food was excellent. They had sold out of steak but offered my husband a large slice of roasted sirloin as an alternative at no extra cost. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful location, excellent service, delicious meal - beautifully prepared. Eight of us enjoyed drinks in the bar area before dinner (the best Old Fashioned I have had in my two weeks stay in the UK 🙂). We then moved to the second floor dining area, with views of the river, and the boats tied up next to the toll bridge. The service couldn't have been better. The wait staff (and the owner) checked in regularly to make sure we were happy and taken care of. I had the Korean wings to start and the mussels for dinner - both were delicious. Around the table we had the brisket and the hake - which were all enjoyed. Wonderful evening. Will definitely be coming here again, the next time we are in Sandwich ❤️.

Popped in for a light lunch and the food was so good we decided to go back for dinner the same evening and we were not disappointed. The food was amazing, the service spot on and the outside dining location was perfect. Highly recommended for great quality and tasty dishes especially the scallop starter. Good work team 👏👏👏👏

The Royal St George's Golf Club, located in England, is a historic 19th-century golf course that has hosted The Open Championship on 15 occasions. It is renowned for its challenging yet magnificent layout and has seen notable champions such as Harry Vardon, Bobby Locke, and Greg Norman. The venue offers fine dining at its club and is described as an intriguing links course with old-fashioned charm and bold architectural features.
Absolutely phenomenal experience!! Amazing course and Andy was an excellent caddy telling me all the best places to hit it and cheered me up after bad shots. I wish I could play here every day!!

Had an incredible experience at Royal St George’s! The staff were absolutely amazing—friendly, welcoming, and went out of their way to ensure everything ran smoothly. The course itself is both challenging and beautifully maintained, offering a real test of skill in the best possible way. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and can confidently say it’s one of the best courses I’ve played in England. Looking forward to returning!
L T — Google review
I attended the Amateur Championship for 3 days this week. What a course! Great set up by the R & A and the event was a credit to both them and the club. I'd love to play it one day, but it's a bit out of my price range!
Ian C — Google review
I was lucky enough to play 4 rounds in 2 days and in that time we had every type of weather. I know the course reasonably well, but I will never know those greens. You either need a PhD in putting or a caddie! Definitely book a caddie, they are all experts.
Catherine D — Google review
Unbelievable golfing experience and rightly holds its place as best in the country. The course also in fantastic condition for December. Playing here is a real treat, each hole is special and the scenery is stunning. Worth playing twice as you will need to enjoy this incredible course for all that it had to offer.
Craig R — Google review
The golf course is wonderful and in my mind the best in England... and as the sun set, the place became magical.
Paul C — Google review
I played a round here on July 10th. This is by far the best golf course I have ever played. The course is stunning and immaculate, but it’s the people who separate this club from others. Everyone greeted me with a warm welcome and provided important information before my round. I even received a guest tag with my full name to put on my golf bag. A big thank you to the entire staff at Royal St. George’s for making this trip truly unforgettable. I hope to be back one day soon.

Very good food! On time and hot food. The potion sizes are great and would now pick them as my go to kebab shop. Very happy with my donner meat in container. And they added in two drinks for free so thank you again amigos

Food is good but the website states the Shish comes with grilled peppers and onions. It didn’t. I rang to complain. To be fair they offered another but along with say you want that next time. We don’t wanna eat at different times. Change the website or do your job properly. Fair ?

We've used Amigos many times for deliveries and never had a bad meal. They are always quicker than they say and the food is piping hot. Pizzas have good toppings and base is not overcooked. The kebabs are full of meat & salad and burgers large and tasty. My baklava turned up and I had 3 good sized pieces. Would happily recommend them.
Diane E — Google review
Their lamb shish kebab is the best quality lamb meat from anywhere else in the area, absolutely no gristle, pure lean gorgeousness. Very generous with the salad too. Prompt and polite service. Highly recommended.
Marcus B — Google review
Average at best. Placed a very simple order of chicken doner kebab and lamb doner meat and chips with salad. The chicken doner came with no pitta bread and was extremely dry. The lamb doner was average however no salad despite me listing what salad I wanted. Will probably not rush back here.

Nestled in the heart of Sandwich, The Bell Hotel is a beautifully refurbished Edwardian gem that exudes charm and character. With stylish guestrooms and an inviting bar/brasserie, it offers a delightful dining experience. Guests rave about the fine-dining options available at The Bell Hotel as well as nearby establishments like The Salutation and Brassserie on the Bay.
We went to Sandwich yesterday and didn't know where to have lunch. The Bell was a real find: confortable, with old age appeal although just modern enough and very well kept. The staff and proprietors were charming, professional and prompt. We ordered a starter of shrimps to share, followed by crab linguine and traditional fish and chips. It was all delicious and the portions were big and satisfying. A great experience.
Alessandra S — Google review
Really friendly & helpful staff, went out of their way to accommodate our dog (even making him a sausage for breakfast!). Good cooked vegan breakfast in the morning. Convenient location to town. The only downside was the parking- there are only 3 spaces outside the hotel. Otherwise you need to park across the road in the public car park.
Barefoot H — Google review
Had lunch in restaurant today only a sausage sandwich for my wife and my self unfortunately it came cold and they had used a very poor spread on the bread not butter and at £10 per sandwich I felt it was overpriced, if i had known they don't use butter on their sandwiches we would have ordered differently. The spread tainted the whole sandwich and we both left them . Tha staff are excellent and friendly very professional and attentive.

Will be back to sample more of their delicious menu!

This a nice traditional hotel in a quaint beautiful town of Sandwich. The hotel is located just near the river on the entrance into Sandwich town. The hotel has a bar and restaurant open for guests and local people and some 40 odd rooms. The hotel staff was very helpful and polite. The breakfast service was amazing and we enjoyed our stay. The hotel has limited parking facilities 4 parking bays to be precise on a first come.basis, but there is a parking place just round the corner which is very convenient.

Whitemills Wake and Aqua Park is a fantastic place to have fun, learn wakeboarding, and enjoy delicious food. The staff are friendly and helpful, providing tips for beginners and creating a welcoming atmosphere. It's a great spot to hang out during the summer months, although it can be chilly in winter. The facilities are amazing for kids, offering an enjoyable experience on sunny days. The cafe serves delicious meals with generous portions, although some visitors experienced slow service at times.
We booked the beginner session for our daughter. She absolutely loved it! Brilliant set up, staff so helpful and friendly. Dog friendly place too. Food in a cafe really good. Overall- fab day out enjoyed by all!

Amazing place to visit!! We just went for coffee and cake, but had a great time watching others enjoy the amazing water activities! I can't wait to go back and try them myself.
Rebekah M — Google review
Great place for a day out, food is great and atmosphere is really nice. Plenty of places to sit and some shelter especially in the hot weather if you have younger children. Great location and plenty of parking. Clean and ample facilities ie. Showers, bag storage, wetsuits are available but not a necessity, life jackets are provided and toilets. The children that love the water will have a great time. We do have one child age 10 that doesn’t have a lot of confidence with water and the aqua park climbing course is a bit daunting for him, so he doesn’t join in for long and when he’s waiting for his brother and friends to finish it is boring just sitting around, would be nice if there was a paddling pool for the younger children or play area. Expect queues for food/drink at busy times. Overall a great experience and great for a birthday party/Hen or stag do experience. I cannot comment on the hotel because this was a day trip.

I came to White Mills leisure Centre today to try and go wakeboarding which was booked over a month ago on the phone with one of their operators. I arrived today to find the booking had not been fulfilled as told by the staff member on the phone. Tried to find an alternative when I arrived on site, but the receptionist was unable to book in for what l'd already booked for on the phone. Having already travelled an hour and a half, I decided that it was best to turn around because they couldn't actually get me onto the experience that l have paid for and booked using a voucher that was gifted to me. I then called on the way back to try and arrange a refund to which I had to call at least 15 times because they were ignoring my phone calls and not responding to me. I got put through to the same receptionist that l dealt with at the centre itself who was unable to process a refund. She then passed me onto her manager Who described me as being abusive because I said that their facilities were poor which is obviously not true he then refused to refund as well because he said and I quote "I haven't booked an experience" which obviously is not my responsibility. If I call up the company and tell them I want to book an experience and they've said yes that's fine, That should be my point of responsibility finished. Anyway the manager was just argumentative the whole way through rather than understanding the situation and that l've driven an hour and a half to get there without being told that firstly the booking wasn't actually fulfilled by their phone operator and secondly that I needed to arrive at 10 am. He ultimately determined that I wasn't due a refund unless the owners agreed too, so I'm now in limbo waiting for a call from the owners of this whitemills centre and hopefully they will give me back my money I have earned myself and I'm rightly owed pack because at the end of the day I haven't been provided with the service I paid my money for. I will continue to blow up their online space and anywhere I can find trace of this company with poor reviews until my complaints Resolved I won't return to this place anyway even if I do get a refund it's quite tacky and looks very cheap. It's very kid orientated and personally I was pretty disappointed with the layout of the whole park. personally, if I was coming here even with a family I would prefer to go to howletts animal park which is just down the road and actually is where l ended up on on the day Ultimately this place needs to hire some staff who can operate their booking systems properly completely and accurately and not be relying on customers to check on their booking post calling the centre and having told that their booking is confirmed this is not a customer responsibility and is clearly a failure of the operation of this company I won't return to this place anyway even if I do get a refund it's quite tacky and looks very cheap. It's very kid orientated and personally I was pretty disappointed with the layout of the whole park. personally, if I was coming here even with a family I would prefer to go to howletts animal park which is just down the road and actually is where I ended up on on the day Ultimately this place needs to hire some staff who can operate their booking systems properly completely and accurately and not be relying on customers to check on their booking post calling the centre and having told that their booking is confirmed this is not a customer responsibility and is clearly a failure of the operation of this company Based on how this company has dealt with and responded to my complaint so far l am absolutely certain that they will deny any responsibility for this and probably continue to push against providing me a refund. I just want people to be aware of how this company is dealing with their customers before they consider purchasing a service from them in any case. I hope I'm proving wrong but based on how I dealt with as a customer so far, I don't believe that I will get my refund for a reasonable response from management or the owners.

This was the best vegan pizza and calzone I have ever tasted. And they plant a tree after every pizza sold. This place is the real deal!

The pizza is really delicious. Handmade pizza in the oven and with quality and local ingredients. We had 4 formagy, the burrata and margarita. Nice place to go with kids. Cozy and well decorated it. Staff very kind. The only negative bit is to have to eat wirh hands or wood cutlery
Elizabeth L — Google review
Kind of a strange place. Good food but you're sat on outdoor garden furniture under giant umbrellas indoors. Pizzas were disappointingly small, chilli oil should have just been called oil, but all in all can't complain given you're in the middle of nowhere. The gelato was definitely the highlight, as good as anything I've had including in Italy
K P — Google review
Great fresh pizza and so nice to have a gluten free and diary free option which was also delicious. Very attentive and friendly staff, we wish they were local to us!!
James B — Google review
Very relaxed family friendly eating space serving very tasty Pizza. Plates and cutlery are cardboard and wooden so just something to be aware of, it's very casual dining. Staff are friendly and helpful. You get a table buzzer to summon staff once you know what you want to order and if you need anything during the meal which is very convenient and saves you waving to make eye contact or going to the counter. There is a sofa area with games and books. The dining seating is not particularly comfortable as the cushions sink and you feel very low down from the table. We used all spare seat cushions on our table to bolster us up and we are reasonably tall people. Toilet was clean but there is only one for everyone so could get busy. All in all delicious food, takeaway and eat in is the same price. Casual, bit noisy, friendly. Probably not the place for a romantic dinner but great for bigger groups wanting a fun get together. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Always enjoyed a visit. Friendly team there and more importantly.. the pizza is incredible. Nice scenic walk after dinner with some Gelato too. Perfect.

The best pizza I've had outside of Italy. Gluten Free options are incredible. Kind and friendly staff 💯 Edit: The Drill Hall has become a regular haunt of mine, most recently hosting my Neice's birthday. 14 guests aswell as other tables being booked and not a single problem. The Staff couldn't have done a better job, the food was incredible as always and for the drinkers they have a wide variety of beers, wines and spirits including every Gin known to man.

Nestled between Sandwich and Deal, Felderland PYO 'Pick Your Own' Farm stands out as one of Kent's largest farms, making it an ideal destination for a family outing. Here, visitors can enjoy the delightful experience of picking their own strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and more seasonal fruits throughout the year. The farm features a charming coffee shop where you can grab hot snacks to refuel after your fruit-picking adventure.
Very friendly and welcoming staff, fantastic for children and adults but definitely wear welly boots as it was very very muddy. Had no idea there were so many different varieties of pumpkins. They provided us with a wheel barrow which was a life saver as pumpkins can be heavy. Food and drink available to buy on site and a kids playground too with lots of selfie worthy opportunities. Me and my son will be back for summer! Thanks guys.

Love this for a traditional pick your own place with great quality fruit. The prices seem steep if you compare to supermarket but the experience of picking and quality of the fruit makes it a really good value morning or afternoon family activity. Great cafe as well :-)
Rosamond M — Google review
Wide variety of pumpkins and large field to squelch around in. Well thought out experience with activities for children in addition to pumpkin picking. Great choice of food outlets and awesome photo opportunities. It was our first time visiting and we will definitely be back next year!

Lovely place to visit with so much choice of fresh fruit to pick. The strawberries are under cover - so don’t let the weather change your plans! The whole site is clean, tidy and plenty of room for parking. It’s encouraging to see eco friendly tubs and packing used. The staff are friendly and helpful, plus a huge bonus they have a park, lots of benches and somewhere you can purchase hot and cold drinks, plus snacks etc.
Hollie D — Google review
Attended today for my partners birthday with her parents and were told we couldn’t share a pot as a couple, so her parents had to give up their pot so she could walk round with me and they had to wait at the cafe as they were told they weren’t allowed to walk through the strawberry field with us, I would highly recommend amending this rule as i can picture many families and couples having the same issue. This would’ve made all the difference in my review as we had a nice time would’ve been nice to share it with the rest of her family.

All the fruit so good!! You pay for the fruit bowl of your preference you and then you fill it up with as much fruit you can put in. The fruit was so fresh, tasty and juicy! Only one thing: make it pet friendly, at least in the cafe area!

The No Name Shop in Sandwich, Kent is a delightful French deli and bistro that offers an array of delicious food options. Visitors can enjoy generous portions of salads and toasted sandwiches, as well as a variety of vegan and gluten-free choices. The shop is known for its friendly service and welcoming atmosphere.
What a find! Incredible value. Some of the largest salads and toasted sandwiches ever seen on planet earth. We had no idea helpings would be this large and had to ask to take half of our "lunch" home for dinner. Amazing tasting bread and butter, divine cheeses. Everything was seriously good. Do yourself a favour, especially if you're hungry, and visit the No Name Shop right in the middle of Sandwich. Highly, highly recommend. 🥪🧀☕

Great bistro for lunch in Sandwich! Tasty ingredients, quality homemade food and a chilled out vibe to the whole place. We stumbled upon the bistro really close to the Guildhall car park. It was perfect on a chilled out day celebrating someone's birthday. The historic building is nicely decorated, with the old windows bringing gorgeous light and breeze into the place. The seated area is on the first floor, although the deli counter downstairs would have some takeaway lunch options too. The food was all very yummy and there were lots of options. Luckily, our vegetarian and our gluten intolerant eaters even had lots to choose from for both savoury and desert courses. The server and owner were both friendly and went out of their way to be helpful without being imposing at all. Like, taking notice and providing dessert menus before we needed to ask and also finding the last of some homemade custard too. 10/10 would recommend. We would all happily come back here. Thank you!

Love from the 1st sight 🥰 love the building, decoration & product display to the best-ever baguette from crust to the filling. I have tried to ask the lady serving and it is French garlic saussage, so special⭐️. I would never forget Sandwich🌈

Altough there is nothing stopping me from crossing the border to France and enjoy their cuisine, I have found this gem of a place, which keeps me entertained with French cuisine and I appreciate the authentic flavors of France. Obviously, a french meal can never be complete without a glass of house white or red wine. On this occasion, I went for red, which complements nicely with the meat and cheese dish. If the word cosy had a physical attribute to it No Name Shop would be a perfect example. Although my work has kept at a distance, I shall make every effort to return to this magnificent place yet also for another authentic Pain au chocolat.

Good food & quick to arrive (total was £11.90 including the coffee)! Lovely cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. There is a shop downstairs where you can buy cheese, olives, jams, pastries etc 😄

I wanted to have a good sandwich in Sandwich. Melted toastie with braised lead and mushroom really hit the spot. This French bistro is a very pleasant place. I would recommend also cream brûlée from the counter in the shop downstairs

A quaint place with an interesting name, nice bakes and kind hosts. I had a baguette with vegan mozzarella and pesto and a chocolate croissant that were both quite tasty. Would definitely visit again to try the other sweet baked treats! Oh and, dogs are welcome and you can purchase puppocinos for them at this cosy joint!

Nestled opposite the historic church, Market Inn is a charming establishment steeped in local lore and history. This former smugglers' inn has been beautifully restored since its reopening in 2017, transforming it into a modern free house while retaining its character. The inn's proximity to the village's quaint central square, adorned with traditional half-timbered houses, adds to its allure.
This is a must stop for a pint when in Sandwich! Great people, atmosphere, and the best Guinness in town! Play some darts and enjoy a beer while meeting some of the nicest people. These past reviews are different ownership completely. The new owners and staff are great!
Zach T — Google review
For starters, anyone who complained about it being “overrun by locals” is just daft because that’s what makes a pub a pub in a town like this. I thought it added character to what would be a very quiet and possibly empty place. The service was great, we were welcomed and looked after from start to finish and to be honest it was great to hear the banter of the locals. The food served was delicious and served in a timely manner. The price for the two lunches inc drinks was under £20. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of life in your beautiful little town

Very quiet on a Sunday lunchtime. A nice pint of Shepherd Neame Masterbrew while I rested a short while while looking around this very historic little town.

Lovely old pub, under new management, both Jane and mick are a joy to be around. Have had several visits, food is fab, staff are lovely.
Susan B — Google review
*Think twice before entering* It was around 7pm on a Saturday evening and we were outside the pub about to enter when we got ‘greeted’ by a vulgar ‘woman’ who turns out to be part owner of the place…She was swearing & making threats whilst we were simply standing there asking calmly for ANY drink (even just water) as we were really thirsty and everywhere else was closed. We were staying at a local hotel and not from the area so were shocked by this treatment. This ‘woman’ called out her husband and father who were unfortunately just as agressive, it’s no surprise they’re all related. I would say they seemed under the influence of certain substances HOWEVER after reading other reviews I’m now assuming it’s just their ‘character’. The pub should honestly be shut down for safety reasons.
Summer W — Google review
I have never walked into a pub as a first timer/complete stranger and been made so welcome before. I felt like an old friend walking in after a short time away. Everyone wanted to know who I was and what my backstory was and even aided me in remembering stuff from over 50 years ago Such a nice place and will now be my first choice of place to visit next time I am in Sandwich. Thank you so much for your welcome and friendship.

If i could give a 0 or minus 5 i would . Absolutely disgusting place . Landlord and daughter is ridiculously rude obnoxious. Will never drink in here again . Diabolical customer service. Place was empty and I now know why. Went in to other surrounding pubs and all said we are not the first to have been treated so badly or experience the rudness of the landlord and daughter .

St Peter's Church in Sandwich is a hidden gem with a rich history and vibrant community. The church still rings the Curfew Bell every evening at 8pm, a tradition dating back to Medieval times. Visitors can explore various stalls inside, and for a small fee, climb the tower for breathtaking views of the town and beyond. The church serves as a hub for community activities, offering a cafe, crafts, and valuable information.
We stumbled across this church by accident and what a find! Inside there are various stalls selling all sorts. Dog friendly inside but not up the tower. The staff that we met were amazing! We decided to pay to go up the tower (£3.50 each, well worth it). A lovely lady looked after our dog for the duration of our adventure up the tower which was so kind! What a star ⭐️ The ascent up the tower is not to be missed! Views all over the town and beyond! Binoculars to borrow and a guide to the views. Loved it!
Jen — Google review
Attractive historic church now unexpectedly hosting a community hub and perhaps the country's most unusual charity shop. The building has been well preserved, and it's possible to ascend the medieval tower for a charge of £3.50, offering good views over the town. The majority of the church building seen today dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The distinctive onion dome decoration, characteristic of churches in this region, was added in the 17th century. The church has a light airy feel inside, with high ceilings, elegant windows and some impressive carved recesses for tombs of wealthy townspeople.
Andrew T — Google review
Located in the centre of town, St Peter's church is a lovely place to pop in and enjoy its cafe and gardens. There is often a charity market. You can also climb up the belfry to have a breathtaking view on the town of Sandwich. The church is open 10 am - 3 pm. The church entry is free but to climb up the belfry you should pay £3.50. P.S. I try to share specific information. If the review was useful, put 👍. I don't get any "goodies", but other tourists will see this review first. Have a good mood and exciting travels!🌍☀️🪂

Great place that holds community events visited St Peters Bell Tower had great views at the top, over sandwich etc and was nice seeing the bells inside the tower
Kim S — Google review
Just £3.50 to climb the tower what a great experience! Really fun to stand next to the bells when they chime. I only wish I had gone at midday. And what a view from the top. Not to be missed if you are in the area.
Adam C — Google review
The church exterior is very interesting as it is composed of flint, stone, brick and rubble. Together they combine to make a very appealing structure. Inside the building, which ceased to be a working church soon after WWII, is well utilised and is a centre of the community. The graveyard is kept beautifully and has seating and attractive plantings
Ian Y — Google review
Charity shop in the church, with friendly volunteers. Bought 4 books (and was going to buy none...). For a few £s you can climb the stairs to the top platform, where you have a lovely 4-direction view over Sandwich & surroundings.

Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful surroundings by taking part in wildflower and bee identification courses or bat walks. The facility is equipped with amenities like a new pre-bookable mobility scooter to ensure everyone can explore the area comfortably.
Such a magical place. The staff at the observatory were wonderful. So passionate about nature and preserving the ecology of things. We learnt about moths and their habitats. We got to see so many species of moth. Absolutely wonderful.

A bird observatory with an extensive nature reserve attached, although not as one continuous area. Well worth a visit during migration. Has a small shop and did cups of tea. Parking for about 16 cars(?). You do have to pay to get onto the private road to the Observatory but all details are on their website
Michael C — Google review
Had a fantastic day there for the migration watch. Very helpful staff and a wonderful location
Neil C — Google review
They have an arrangement with the Sandwich Bay Estate re the toll. If you are just going to the reserve it’s £1. We were also offered a ticket for £5 which would let us drive through. Entry to the reserve is free, you can give a donation and there’s a shop. Go on a walk Sounds like you never know what you’ll see but you could see lots or things you wouldn’t expect. A couple of weeks and they expect hundreds of goldcrests. Owls were seen this morning. Steffan, Site Manager, led our walk. We didn’t go far in our hour but heard and saw a few birds and he gave us tips on where to see things on the reserve and generally. We’ll be back.
Sharon A — Google review
What a wonderfully peaceful place to visit for a walk and to watch the birds. The volunteer at the Field Centre was helpful and knowledgeable, and gave us a good walking route to follow. It was an incredibly peaceful place with zero traffic noise apart from the odd car that passed along the toll road. The Scrape was my favourite area, a lake with two well equipped and comfortable hides. The other bird watchers were friendly and happy to share their knowledge. You have to pay £1 for the toll road (£5 if you want to continue along it to Deal), if you are not a member. Will definitely be back!
Alison W — Google review
Took a long time to find this place, very poor signage. Once at the visitors centre there was no one to welcome us or suggest how we could view birds. The only sign indicated a hide some considerable distance away. I love spotting birds but I can't walk very long distances. This centre could improve considerably.
Jan S — Google review
Amazing events! The moth evenings are great for children as are the guided wildlife walks every Friday and Sunday. Their Open Day on August bank holiday is always a highlight of our year. Classes in the winter also for people wanting to learn more about the natural world. Really recommend the Wildflower and Bee identification courses when they run them oh and the bat walks! Otherwise just a great place to have a wander to see birds, orchids, insects and all wildlife really. The field centre volunteers are really friendly and happy to point you in the right direction for walks. These can be found on OS map app too. Visiting their reserve Restharrow Scrape is a must, especially if you're into photography or just want to connect with nature. At only £1 at the toll gate it's a bargain too!

Knowledgeable staff and well stocked visitor shop. We left with lots of bird food for our garden feeders! Unfortunately due to covid restrictions the hides are closed but work has been done to ensure viewing platforms are available.

Great bar and we chanced upon the place when they had a band on on a Saturday afternoon. Lovely pint of Guinness. Would have been 5 stars but just before 5pm they ran out of Guinness. Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day and that shows a severe lack of management. Can imagine that there will be quite a few disappointed tonight with the next band on and even more tomorrow on Paddy's Day.

Just popped in for a drink on Sunday but the staff were so lovely that we thought we would chance it and have lunch. Really glad we did it was fabulous, hot and tasty(cauliflower cheese was to die for), well cooked vegetables, big portions of meat, lashings of gravy. Couldn’t fault it at all. Very pleasant experience on our one night midweek stay. Our room, although plain and simple, was really clean and had everything we needed. Bed was really comfy. Plenty of Tea and coffee provided as well. Our only issue was that the shower mixer tap was very stiff and difficult to turn off. This was raised when booking out and taken on board to be dealt with. Would have been 5 stars but unfortunately the chef had an injury so no evening meals were available. The breakfast though was excellent. Huge and perfectly cooked. Really nice. Would definitely stay again.

Whilst it’s fresh in my memory from our dining experience this evening. Everything was just ok The Thai ladies didn’t manage a smile whilst serving and collecting plates. Tried to engage but it felt they were just going thru the motions. The young English server was polite and somewhat more engaging. The starter was ok as was my main. The Blue Pigeons is a charming hotel with warmly decorated rooms and flat-screen TVs. It's known for its unpretentious atmosphere and delicious breakfast. The venue has received high praise for hosting weddings, with guests commending the incredible customer service and seamless event planning. While there have been some past issues with management, recent improvements have been noted. Guests appreciate the attentive staff and personal touches in the rooms, making for a delightful stay.
My husband, and my brother, and I booked one small room and the two garden cabins as a treat for my parents to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary and mum's birthday. The property has been painstakingly restored and is beautifully designed throughout. On arrival we were welcomed with a bottle of Chapel Down sparkling Rose which we enjoyed in the beautiful garden which was a great start to our weekend. Everything still looks immaculate (the property opened December 2024), and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Our rooms came complete with everything you expect and more from a property of this standard. Hairdryer, steam iron, Robert's Radio, Smeg kettle, coffee machine and complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits, local guide, Smart TV. The hotel supports local Kent businesses including Pelegrims bathroom products which are amazing, Tadpole and Chapel Down wines. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with upscale furniture and was decorated in an Autumn theme during our stay. The food was delicious, the service was unhurried, natural and friendly, and always with a smile. The complimentary continental breakfast included pastries and bread straight from the oven, cheese and ham, cereal, fruit & yoghurt, which would normally be enough but we couldn't help ourselves but to order from the a la carte too, as dinner was so good, we wanted to enjoy more of what the chefs have to offer, and we weren't disappointed. As it was a special celebration for my parents plus mum's birthday I called ahead of our arrival and arranged for flowers and chocolates for my parents room which was handled without a fuss. The Blue Pigeons is offering a high-end experience with high quality produce coming out of the kitchen, luxury in-room products and amenities and an enthusiast young team of staff who offer a genuine, natural and friendly service. I highly recommend a stay here, it's a real hidden gem and we wish The Blue Pigeons great success in the future.

We went to the Blue Pigeon today for a Sunday lunch. The venue looked amazing. We sat and listened to the pianist playing, having a drink before we went through to our table. The food was delicious , we all had starters with a roast beef and pork, there were other options on the menu, including children’s menu. Just about managed to squeeze in a gorgeous dessert with multiple choices of ice creams. The staff were all very polite throughout. If you haven’t been we would highly recommend a visit. 🤩

A hidden gem! Simply stunning, the detail in everything is faultless! The food is exquisite, a level rarely found, taste, quality and presentation outstanding. The staff are very personable and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The bed is super comfortable and the pillow was so amazing that I had to look at the brand - to order my own.

Superb relaxing lunch on the terrace. The menu is short and all the better for it, 4 choices for each course but choosing was still difficult. We were served by the wonderful Donna who is charming and professional in equal measure. The Blue Pigeons is a brilliant addition to the local restaurant and restaurant with rooms scene.

Everything about the Blue Pigeon is simply wonderful. The restaurant has been redecorated the highest standard. The outdoor garden absolutely magnificent. However...I ordered cod and it tasted rubbery and not falling apart the way freshly caught fish does. NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL considering the price tag it comes with. The portion was skimpy too👎 Won't go back❌️

We loved this hotel so much we stopped again on our return home from France for our final treat. We have been in the smallest and the largest rooms and they are all beautifully decorated with lovely details especially the bathroom in the Lilly suite. We had a fantastic meal in the restaurant and the next day there is a good choice of fresh produce for breakfast. The staff are very friendly and helpful and I would recommend anyone going over to France to stop here first

Beautifully renovated with charming decor and some lovely small ‘extra’ touches, what made our stay truly special was the quality of the food and the friendly, attentive but not intrusive service. Most strongly recommended; we will definitely return. Sir Andrew Gregory KBE CB DL

Lovely bank holiday Monday lunch on the patio. The Blue Pigeons is under new ownership and they’ve done a wonderful job to restore and update the building. The cooking is superb and the 3 course lunch at £35 excellent value, service was a highlight with the lovely Donna professional and personable in equal measure. This will quickly become a local favourite as well as a weekend destination.

St Crispin Inn is a delightful gem nestled in the quaint village of Worth, exuding the timeless charm of the Kentish countryside. This historic pub, dating back to 1420, offers cozy accommodations and a warm atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Guests can indulge in exquisite dining options by a crackling log fire while enjoying an impressive selection of on-tap drinks.
We stayed here for a week and found it wonderful. Quiet and comfortable. Food and service was perfect. Breakfast was scrumcious. The room was clean and very comfortable, but the bathroom door didn't shut, but it wasn't a problem for us. Only downside for us as we had no car, the buses only came to the village in the morning, so we needed to walk from Sandwich to get back. Sandwich was an interesting place to look round very historical.

My partner had her 40th birthday meal there set up by her parents and with the very helpful help of the staff. The food we had was excellent and I couldn't fault it. My partner and her parents thoroughly enjoyed their meal. The staff were excellent not just to ourselves also to the locals who came in for a friendly chat and pint. I can honestly say I will be going back not just because the food was excellent but also for the local banter and ambience it offers.

4 of us visited on recommendation (from Delf Farm) for Sunday lunch . The premises were busy, yet the configuration of almost individual dining areas , meant we did not feel crowded. Service , presentation and food were of the highest standard. Dietary needs were clearly understood by all the staff and attended too.

Never had a bad meal here. A great place for a leisurely lunch with friends or a Sunday feast with the grandparents. Very accommodating for large groups and children. Vegetarian options are good and all portions will satisfy most appetites. Heartily recommended.

We had a main meal here in the afternoon (steak and ale pie and a chicken kebab). The food was very good with generous size portions. Prompt friendly service. This traditional old pub is set in a beautiful village with a duck pond. We walked there and back from Eastry (4miles).

Very nice looking pub. Childrens play area very dated and we was told there was a bounce castle which I didn't see. Roast was nice but swimming in gravy which unfortunately made the very nice looking Yorkshire pudding super soggy which is not pleasant. Gravy was very nice. Potatoes really good. Meat was ok and veg was nice. Stuffing probably worst iv ever had, dry and really not nice.

Had a fantastic meal at the St. Crispin’s Inn in Sandwich. Been here around 5-6 times now and always great quality so finally got round to doing a review as they deserve it. The pub has a great cosy feel, and the staff are always really friendly and attentive. I had the steak on this occasion which was beautiful and full of flavour. Portion sizes always generous. I also love the drinks selection, with some good local ales and wines. Overall, great food, great service, and a lovely atmosphere – I’d definitely recommend it and I will be going back. Enjoy

We enjoyed our final holiday evening in the pub with a meal and a few scoops. The young lady on the bar and waiting on was so friendly and helpful and was clearly an asset to the company. She went out of her way to tend to our needs with a 3 year old in tow. I had a sunday roast and the beef was a little tough but very tasty. We asked for extra veggies which was no problem at all for the chef to provide. The craic with the locals at the bar was also top drawer. A lovely older lady who used to be a landlady had plenty of time for conversation. Would recommend 👌

Pub was lively and staff was very helpful and attentive. We had the nachos and brisket to start this is a must have! For mains We had the pork belly and mushroom risotto and they were superb! Finished off with a lovely chocolate brownie and ice cream. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back! Nestled in the charming town of Sandwich, The Drill Hall is a must-visit for pizza lovers. Renowned as one of the best spots for vegan pizza in Kent, it boasts an impressive selection that caters to various dietary needs. Watching the pizzas being crafted right before your eyes adds to the experience, and the friendly chef even shares insights about their unique vegan cheese and pesto.
In my opinion, this is the best vegan pizza spot in Kent! There’s a brilliant range of choices, they’re super clear with allergens, and it’s genuinely inspiring watching the pizzas being made right in front of you. The chef was really friendly and even showed me the vegan cheese and pesto they use, which was a lovely touch. The interior might not be the most beautiful you’ve ever seen—but the pizza absolutely is. And that’s exactly why you should go!

The pizzas were lovely. No probs. BUT in the daytime, the interior is too dark by contrast and the light coming in from the huge doors blinds you if you're sitting facing them. You can't see your fellow diners faces. Bit awks!!!

Our reenactment group was in Sandwich over the weekend for an event nearby the Drill Hall. After setting up on the Friday we were famished, and someone recommended the Drill Hall for pizza. We popped over and ordered 7 pizzas; it was already quite late in the evening and fairly busy, but the staff were very accommodating!! We came back a bit later to collect the pizzas and honestly it was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Another chap in our group is half Italian and he said it was the best pizza he’d ever had in the uk. Brilliant food, lovely staff, great atmosphere. Will definitely be back next time we’re in Sandwich!! Cheers guys :)

A free museum with a lovely set of volunteers. Our kids were treated to a full walk/talk through of the court room and allowed to sit in the juror box and also pretend to be prisoners. The whole family enjoyed it.

A hidden gem. We visited on a Sunday morning and have gone past this place many many times. What an interesting museum. The guide that took us into the 16th century courtroom was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If you fancy a small but interesting slice in stepping back in time, definitely spend half an hour in here!

Oh my goodness, what a lovely little museum! The gentleman in the entrance was amazing, a very knowledgeable fellow. To be honest, his voice was lovely and soothing; I could’ve listened to him all day! The lady that’s there was a delight to talk with about the local history too. She was so kind and engaging, my friend and I learnt a great deal! It’s free to enter as well; the courtroom there was beautiful. The stained glass window was captivating. Please come to Sandwich, and to this museum, you’ll realise how important Sandwich was in the past.

Located in the charming town of Sandwich, The Sandwich Shop is a must-visit for food enthusiasts. Despite being the sole sandwich shop in town, it lives up to its reputation as the home of sandwiches. With a diverse menu and inviting club atmosphere, this spot offers delectable options like the Earl of Sandwich and The Farm House. Visitors praise the friendly staff who go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Guests can also enjoy their meals al fresco while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
When in Sandwich…. Yes, we totally went there to experience the home of the humble bread and filling. So this café is not exactly the very place where the sandwich was invented, but the staff were lovely and we’re happy to share a story about its origins. The sandwiches we had - the Earl of Sandwich roast beef, the cheese and ale chutney and the tuna mayo - were all lovely and fresh with generous amounts of ingredients.

I can finally say I've had a Sandwich in Sandwich. As the home of Sandwiches it's surprising there's only 1 sandwich shop. Well this is the best one in town. Check out the menu and join the club. They close at 5pm latest so don't wait. We had the Earl of Sandwich and The Farm House. Both were exquisitely made. Recommended.
Jermaine N — Google review
Well placed to be a world famous sandwich shop but wish I hadn't gone. High price, generous servings of disappointment, and tight on fillings. £7.80 for a prawn Marie rose with less prawn than a Tesco's sarnie. A ham sandwich with 1 slice of mediocre ham. Major let down. Could be great there.
Alex M — Google review
Lovely sandwich shop where sandwiches are made to order, come with a side salad and coleslaw, and nicely presented. We sat outside in the market square as it was a sunny day and can't fault this place. Had a coffee to compliment the sandwich and it's not overpriced at all. Will certainly recommend and visit if in the area again.
Alison F — Google review
For a sandwich shop in Sandwich you’d expect decent sandwiches! Don’t bother going here it’s a tourist trap. Bread was cheap and nasty, prawn sandwich was dripping with water and salad hadn’t been washed I could taste the chemicals on it. Rubbish.

Fab café! Been here a few times whilst visiting Sandwich from outside the area. Good choice of food and also offer gluten free which is great for me as I'm gluten intolerant and visited with a friend yesterday who has coeliac disease. St Mary's Arts Centre in Sandwich is a former church that has been repurposed for various events such as wedding receptions, exhibitions, shows, and craft fairs. Despite its unassuming entrance, the interior is surprisingly spacious and features original elements like stained glass windows, a lectern, and burial stones. The venue also includes a kitchen area, toilets, and a stage. Visitors have attended concerts and Christmas crafts fairs at this well-maintained space.
Attended a function here last night. Lovely venue, so pretty inside. A lovely place for people to get together, just as a church was intended. So good to see it being maintained as an historic building, and not left to fall into disrepair. Thank you.

This church is one of two in Sandwich that are no longer used for their original purpose. It has been given over to wedding receptions, exhibitions, shows and craft fairs etc. It is much more spacious inside than the entrance suggests. There are many original features such as stain glass windows, lectern and burial stones. No parking other than fee paying car park opposite, or street parking slightly further away. There is a kitchen area and toilets and stage.

The King's Arms is a historic tavern from the 1580s that offers accommodations with complimentary breakfast and internet access. It also boasts a charming enclosed beer garden. This establishment serves excellent Sunday lunches and features an authentic atmosphere complete with a cozy hearth. The rooms maintain their old Inn character, providing guests with a truly atmospheric experience. Additionally, there is a separate dining area called 'Annie's room' that resembles a grand manor house dining hall, perfect for large family gatherings.
We come here quite a bit for lunch and we've never been disappointed. The service is always great and the food is always piping hot and delicious. We came with our friend The Captain and we had beers and wine...naturally. The Captain ordered from the specials board, he had Tomato soup and Chicken, Prawn and Avocado Salad with new potatoes. He said it was really tasty. I had Filo Prawns with a garlic mayo followed by Fish and Chips. I'd been craving Fish and Chips for ages and I'd had a few and nothing had been hiding the spot but these were perfect. The batter not too greasy, not too crispy and yet not too soggy. Perfect. My husband had smoked Salmon to start followed by Steak and Kidney pudding with Roasties and veg. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals too. Unfortunately we were all too stuffed for a pudding but even the pudding list sounded yummy. Couldn't tell you how much it cost as we were treated but the starters were around £7 each and the mains somewhere between £15-20. Well worth it.

Wow !!!!! What a wonderful afternoon at the Kings Arm . Twice we had to cancel our birthday meal due to daughter and grandchildren having Omicron. Extremely lucky to have the cosy back room to ourselves . Extremely well looked after throughout our meal nothing was to much bother. Pub was beautifully clean we could not have wished for more staff excellent . Food was excellent always is perfectly cooked with love . Everyone chose a different meal which thoroughly enjoyed . Empty plates from all the adults and grandchildren tried the best to get through their meal. Deserts is something I don’t normally have but the New York cheese cake with coulis and ice cream was not to say no to . Thank you to the Kings Arm ‘s for a fantastic time we had and gorgeous fresh cooked food . First time we have visited since new owners have taken over . So pleased Kirsty is still employed she has worked there for 17 years and the lovely young fair haired man . A new chef has been put in place , well I must say it has been a truly wonderful experience at the Kings Arms . Lovely warm greeting on arrival and allowed to dine in our favourite room ( the secret room ) . Nothing is to much trouble and Kirsty told us the history of the hotel and her personal experiences . Our food was cooked to perfection no complaints whatsoever. Husband Scottish steak cooked just how he likes it and thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. I had beef lasagne with tomatoes around the edges of dish ( superb never tasted anything like this before) and salad . Desert apple crumble for my husband , one scoop of vanilla ice cream and one of chocolate with chocolate sauce and a flake. Lovely glass of rose’ for myself and a lager for my husband . Definitely will be back with my family . Highly recommended one not to miss .

I am always hesitant when trying out restaurants that offer Spanish tapas or other traditional dishes, being from Spain myself. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the charming Tan Bueno restaurant right on my doorstep. I had the opportunity to taste a variety of freshly cooked and delicious dishes, which were so good that I ended up ordering more. Despite it being a busy Saturday night with only three staff members available, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was inviting.
Always have such an amazing time - the food, drinks and service are all great. Beautifully decorated and perfect for any occasion. The court yard is spacious and private and a real sun trap! Delicious 3 course meal. Excellent vegetarian options. Fabulous food. One tiny down side was that service was a little slow, we weren't asked if we'd like drinks for almost ten minutes, but once ordered the food and drink arrived promptly. Luckily we had plenty to chat about so it didn't ruin our evening and the food was definitely worth the wait.

Another lovely find in Sandwich! My wife and I dropped in for a meal and received a friendly welcome and were seated quickly. Menus were perused and choices made whilst our drinks made their way out to us. My wife's coffee was sublime and my cider choice was perfect. Our food arrived promptly (a pork belly burger and a cheeseburger) and was far better looking than my photos show. More importantly it tasted magnificent! Really good quality food in a generous portion. The staff were attentive but not over bearing which made us feel cared for and not harassed. We both decided on pudding although we were stuffed from the main course. My wife had the poached pear and I had the sticky toffee pudding. Again, it was served promptly and was sublime! We had a wonderful time here and would recommend it to all. Well done the hop & huffkin

I recently moved to Sandwich and discovered Ossies, hands down the best haddock and chips in the area for miles. The owner is always friendly and mentioned that the fish is sourced fresh, which certainly tastes like it. The fish is always cooked to perfection, and the chips are not the typical pale ones you get from other places. I try to visit each Friday whenever possible.

Dropped in today for a little something to eat. We chose fish and chips, saveloy and chips with portion of battered mushrooms. Wow size of the Fish and it had no skin and the batter was crunchy crispy, portion size is value for money, amazing place to eat and the staff super friendly. Will defo be back 100% but we will share next time 😆

Large haddock and chips for £11.50 is a bargain, everything was beautifully cooked to perfection. My only issue was the waiting time in the restaurant area which could do with a spruce up, as it looks like it's stuck in the 70s regardless everything was clean and tidy. We waited a while for our food as takeaway customers were served first despite coming in after. Overall I couldn't fault the food and this could be one of the best fish and chips I've ever had.

Simply the best fish and chips I have eaten. Small place and very inexpensive. Coming from across the Atlantic I have never seen such large portions.

Incredible!!!! Amazing service, Boyd is amazing and works so hard. The food is great especially the vegetarian options the burger and sausages are awesome and it’s cooked fresh so quickly! Amazing spot to grab some local fish and chips and relax, recommend please visit if close by!!!!

My husband and I called in Ossies for fish and chips in Sandwich today (24/9/25) and WOW what a find !! Fantastic fish & chips the best we have had for years, very generous portions freshly cooked, the way they used to be years ago when we were kids, Well done guys you should run a school for fish & chips and show others how to perform.

Great little Fish and Chip shop and restaurant in the centre of Sandwich. Really enjoyed the freshly cooked fish and chips and cups of tea. A very friendly greeting and attentive service given by all the staff was really nice. A good price and good choice of other food and drinks. Very clean and tidy with a good view with lots of natural light coming through the window with a nice nautical decor. Lots of shops nearby by to visit and a short walk from the restaurant will have you down by the quayside for a pleasant stroll by the river. The main car park is also very close by with toilet facilities, all easy to get to and around.

Wow! Best fish and chips I have ever eaten in my life! And the portions, massive! Mushed peas, is a must. We've had the vegan burger as well, which was veery tasty. The complete food is definitely made with love and tailored to perfection. Totally recommended!

First visit recently after hearing raving reviews by friends for the past few months. Absolutely loved it ! The food is so delicious and full of flavours. Its hard to put into words...you just need to book and eat here to understand how good it is. The staff are lovely ! So friendly and happily talk you through the menu. Quick service...quirky little restaurant. Nice touch being able to see right into the kitchen. Booked again for this weekend!

Friendly service and speedy. Cosy nice decor. Sadly the sauces/ chutneys provided with the poppadum were uneatable. Not a good first introduction to the food. Was very excited to try the food after reading the reviews but left underwhelmed. The curry sauces were distinctly average. .

All the dishes we ordered were super delicious. We had seabas- paneer-chicken- kebabs- here’s rice- daal and various other dishes. The service was fast and the food came out hot. There were 8 of us and everyone enjoyed the food and of course the drinks. Highly recommended this restaurant if you are visiting Dover or living in the area.

Great restaurant. They even made me a special desert for my birthday. The quality of the meat and fish are very high. The staff were really friendly. I highly recommend.
Daniel M — Google review
I was rather disappointed with the food. Even the dips for the poppadoms were very runny and no salad/onion with it. The main course I had was Chicken Dansak and there was very little chicken in the dish! It was mostly sauce and not very spicy. Many items seemed like there were pureed. I would not recommend this restaurant for food. The staff were friendly.
Gazza H — Google review
The food was ok and luke warm nothing special compared to other authentic indian cuisine. Service was relatively good at the beginning, and food came out super quick and was cleared quickly too. No one checked on us following the table being cleared. Not asked if we would have liked more drinks or dessert. We would have stayed but the service wasn't where it needed to be.

One of the best indian restaurants I've been to! The food was amazing, the staff were very friendly and the atmosphere and decor are lovely. Will 100 percent be visiting again. Worth every penny!

Nature preserve
Gazen Salts Nature Reserve is a 15-acre man-made sanctuary featuring winding paths that lead through various habitats. The central lake is home to a diverse collection of wildfowl, making it an enjoyable destination for families. Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the reserve, with ongoing efforts to improve the wildlife habitats and reintroduce overgrown ponds. While smaller in size, the reserve offers a tranquil setting for leisurely walks, picnics, and quiet reading by the lake.
Very peaceful, car park right next to it and no dogs allowed which means it's even more preserved
LukeHB21 — Google review
Beautiful, peaceful and well kept nature reserve. Flat and easy to walk around with a lovely duck pond to sit by. Spent about an hour wandering round on a sunny Sunday morning and will definitely return (with bread for the ducks next time)
Matt P — Google review
I recently visited this stunning nature reserve and was genuinely impressed by the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty. The walking trails were well-maintained and clearly signposted, making it easy to explore without feeling lost. I saw a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and even a deer in the distance, which made the experience even more memorable. There are plenty of quiet spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings, and the mix of woodland, wetlands, and open fields kept things interesting throughout the walk. It’s a great place for photography, family outings, or just a solo escape into nature. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for anyone looking to unwind, reconnect with nature, and enjoy some fresh air. Highly recommended for nature lovers or anyone needing a break from city life.

Beautiful scenery, lots of parking and the trails are all clearly marked. Very difficult to get lost as all the trails lead you back to the entrance

Very nice place to walk in nature. The day we visited there were lots of volunteers working on maintaining the reserve, and I appreciate their efforts.
Debby K — Google review
I didn't get very far in as I was just killing time but I did sit on the most comfortable bench I have ever sat in. 10/10 would sit in nature on the comfy bench again.

Excellent customer service! I was walking by the shop in Sandwich after they were closed, saw a print I liked, the manager happened to be coming outside and he invited me in and and showed me around. I bought the print that caught my eye in the display window. They shipped it to California for me and it arrived with more protection than I brought my first born child home from the hospital with! Very impressed! Will visit again soon!

I bought a painting when I found this dear art gallery in Sandwich this summer. Both the artwork and gilding, including the frame are breathtaking, indeed the painting is admired by all who see it. It is a centrepiece on my sitting room wall and makes my heart leap each time I see it. It's golden and blue brilliance will get me through the oncoming English winter. Highly recommend these paintings. Professional service, well-wrapped, kind artist and wife team.

Coffee shop
If you're wandering through Sandwich, make sure to stop by Goats That Dance, a charming little café that perfectly captures the essence of a cozy coffee shop. Nestled on a quiet street corner, this delightful spot offers an idyllic outdoor seating area where you can soak up the sun while sipping on some of the best coffee around—sourced from local roasters in Deal. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, thanks to friendly staff who make every visit feel special.
The platonic ideal of a coffee shop. The outside seating is idylic in every way, and cute in many other ways. The shop is tucked in a corner of a not so busy street, cozy in a way only a small space such as this can be. The coffee tastes of warm summer days with a light breeze, and the tea cup is in a cute stack with its pot. The cakes are all excellent, a delight you can allow yourself and stop feeling bad about as soon as your first bite. I will remember this day for years.

Well... I'd been on a long 13 mile hike/walk from Deal to and around Sandwich area. I missed the hourly train back to Deal, so, I wanted a coffee and cake ideally. Had a quick check on Google and chose 'Goats that Dance' as a place to try. Albeit a small place, very amenable staff, and I really enjoyed the coffee and lemon drizzle cake. So much so I had to rush back to the Sandwich railway station with 1 minute to spare!
Phil P — Google review
This place is great! Brilliant coffee (the best I've had in a while) and from a local coffee roaster too, in Deal. Megan was so friendly and welcoming it was a treat. Sitting is available inside and over the lane in the churchyard too. Simple menu but, for us, everything we wanted. Loved the individuality of the cafe, even down to the beautiful coffee spoons. Couldn't fault a thing - well done!!! Next time in Sandwich this is a must.

What a fabulous little cafe. Great coffee and a wonderful atmosphere. Definitely stop in when you're in Sandwich. Super friendly staff.

It's a great place to grab a coffee and a piece of cake. It feels like you're in your lounge at home. Quirky, intimate and chilled. The coffee is lovely. I had a soya caramel latte and it was smooth and strong... perfect! The cakes and scones look scrumptious although I didn't order any. There is a dog ice cream too! They have a takeaway window for when you are on the hop and it all feels lovely and old-school. There is plenty of outdoor seating in the churchyard opposite for the sunny days, and you can order inside and they'll bring it out to you. We will be back!
Rebecca T — Google review
An independent business serving lovely coffee. Small but friendly and definitely would return Had a sausage muffin also which was good.

Today my sister and I went to this lovely little café. It was there first day but it was an amazing experience. The cake was delicious. The new owners are verry kind. Dogs are welcome and there will be a threat waiting for them.

In the heart of Sandwich, nestled away in a quiet section of the centre, is a charming and pleasant coffee shop with a vibrant and eccentric atmosphere. Appears to be a popular spot for residents and tourists alike to socialise and meet new people. Extremely progressive and tolerant in appearance, displaying LGBT flags and permitting dogs within, (and goats if you have one). Tl;dr: Good café, good coffee, and good people.

In the words of my 3 year old “this was the best day ever. Especially with the burger in my tummy” Fantastic food and very reasonably priced for the portion sizes. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and the general vibes were very chill. Will definitely be coming back!
Kate W — Google review
Response: I entirely understand it was busy and I appreciate the great food we’ve had in the past and do apologise for the fact a review hadn’t been given before, like I did state it is normally really good, but I had to put it out there how disappointing it was and the fact it was a near complete waste of over £30 besides the milkshake, which I hope you can appreciate is very frustrating as like you said yourself it is normally lovely. The nuggets them selves were inedible and the chips were cold and stale, so unfortunately it warranted a review as for such a small and basic order and even with it being busy, it shouldn’t of been delivered like that especially for the price I paid. Hope you understand my frustration. Really disappointed tonight, spent over £30 for 2 kids meals and 2 milkshakes for it to take over an hour to be delivered, then for the food to arrive lukewarm and stale. Only decent thing was the milkshakes and you’d hope so for nearly £6 each. Called and asked if the delivery driver had the extra dip I ordered to be told he packed it and knew he didn’t put it in. Normally really good but genuinely feels like a complete waste of money tonight.

My favourite cafe! I come here nearly every week to read and have lunch. I love the outdoor courtyard. The food is always tasty and the drinks are lovely (reccommend the hazelnut iced latte, tastes like kinder Buenos!) The staff are always sooo friendly and kind and its always so nice when they recognise me! My happy place! 😊

The Strand Street Kitchen and Bar is a charming, small establishment with both indoor and outdoor seating options. On a recent visit, 21/09/24- I found the atmosphere cosy, though somewhat uncomfortable due to the intense air conditioning, which not only made the space cold but also cooled down our food rather quickly. Service-wise, it was a bit of a wait—about 40 minutes from ordering to receiving our meals. I can understand that they were busy, but the wait felt unusually long. I ordered the ham, eggs, and chips along with a Coke, the chips were over cooked but the ham was delicious. My husband opted for the chicken wrap, which, surprisingly, didn’t come with any sides like a salad garnish or chips. He also had a milkshake, which was pretty average, nothing special. After waiting for a considerable time and finishing our cold meals, we decided to leave fairly quickly as the chilly environment made it hard to linger. Overall, while the place has a nice vibe, unfortunately, I won’t be returning or recommending it. See attached pictures of the menu and our meals.

Went to sandwich for a day out and found this place was highly rated. Sandwich is not that big of a place, and we got to Strand street in a couple minutes from the quay car park. We both got a sandwich (Fish fingers and tartare sauce / Sausage and chutney) which were fantastic and very flavourful. Would definitely recommend both, but the sausage and chutney is what I would get again. They didn't have an allergy menu to hand but they were very accommodating. One of us is dairy intolerant and they swapped the butter for an alternative, so this was great service. All the staff were friendly and the food/drink came out quickly. On a hot day they have a few tables out the front, but they were all full when we arrived. Would definitely go back

Had breakfast here. After 5 minutes sitting waiting on the terrace, spotted a small sign telling customers to order at a window. Spent 3 minutes being studiously ignored there before order was taken. Had to pay before seating again, weirdly. Ordered the 'no fuss' breakfast for £9 and a cappuccino in addition. Breakfast couldn't have the advertised hash browns as they were 'busier than usual'. The eggs were fairly anemic and only warm. Bacon was barely cooked. Just enough colour to say it wasn't raw, but really unappetising and didn't get eaten. Sausages were decent. But on the whole, it was below par. Coffee was mediocre. They apologised a number of times and explained they were overrun that day. But the place was only half full, so I would say this is a staffing issue, and they might be better getting another pair of hands in the kitchen to make sure they're putting out breakfasts that are of a decent quality. The younger of the two servers that day was friendly and nice though. On the whole it falls below what I would want and can get elsewhere and nearby for the money (the haven down the road is excellent). Otherwise this is a nice location, with a pretty terrace and it's a nice building, so I hope they do a little better with the food quality in future. But the experience I had this week left little to recommend returning, sadly.

Our 1st visit and very impressed. We were their first customers today and received a warm welcome. Great coffee, generous cake and exceptional sausage & black pudding roll. Delicious sandwiches in the heart of Sandwich!! For obvious reasons, we had to have sandwiches while visiting the town. The menu had a lot of delicious options and everything was so reasonably priced! We ordered three sandwiches and they did take a while (~30 mins) to arrive but they were worth the wait! They also had vegetarian options and gluten free bread - which makes the food accessible to everyone. Great strong teas as well, you get not one but two teabags in your mug!

Arriving at The Mermaid's Locker for a birthday celebration, recommended by numerous locals and friends, high expectations were set. A prior arrangement with the chef ensured that the partner could indulge in her beloved roast partridge accompanied by seasonal veggies and a red berry jus. The food surpassed all expectations and left a lasting impression. The venue itself exuded warmth and charm, offering exquisite cuisine alongside an impressive selection of beverages, including a refreshing pale ale followed by some bubbly.
Quirky and cosy! Absolutely loved this place. What seems like a “hole in the wall” bar has such a cool vibe. Annette (owner) and Gavin (chef) made us feel SO welcome. Their customer service is what every business should aspire to achieve!

Absolutely fantastic meal last Friday. The staff were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble for the Chefs. We all enjoyed 3 courses. Starters: Tempura chicken, Calamari and a Scallop & King prawn dish. For main: Cod for one, Rib eye steak for other 3 of us (all cooked to perfection) with chips and accompaniments. For dessert: Brownie for 2, Peanut butter ice cream and lastly a Profiteroles. A sublime meal, would highly recommend!! Compliments to the Chefs again!!

I came here to celebrate my partners birthday after many recommendations and promises of excellent food from friends and locals alike. I phoned in advance and, speaking to the chef, arranged for my partner to have roast partridge, a favourite of hers, which was served with seasonal vegetables and a red berry jus. The food was truly exceptional, beyond all my expectations, safe to say she was impressed too! All in all I found the place a lovely, welcoming venue, with amazing food and great drinks, I myself enjoying a pristine pale ale before moving onto the bubbly! I would definitely recommend and will be back again. Attached is a picture of my partners meal, it would of been a crime not to share it.

What a hidden gem. So I didn't know about this pub which was hidden in the corner. We went in without a booking, thinking it's a Sunday and its quite early, we should be fine. but they said they all quite full, so I was surprised. They popped us at the outside table. It was cosy and really lovely. The food came and we were not disappointed. One of our friends hate vegetables but is a veggie.. and he ate all of the food cos it was so delicious. The portions are generous.
