Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre is an English Heritage site located in England. The fortress features stone walls and a museum with exhibits on Roman life. Visitors can bring their dogs on a lead to explore the extensive grounds, which were once the beginning of Roman rule. The site offers guided tours and is suitable for families with children aged 4-8, offering educational experiences led by knowledgeable staff and volunteers.
Had a fantastic time in brilliant weather at the fort. English Heritage, Staff were helpful and informative. The audio description was very useful.

Theres not a huge amount to see here and only made worthwhile for us being cadw members. However its still a nice and well kept site in peaceful surroundings in the countryside. The lady in the gift shop was nice and polite .
High M — Google review
Before entering I read a review which said there wasn’t much here - well it depends on expectations! I would recommend the guidebook to get your bearings although the usual panels are available. The site is quite big and is a really interesting one for those interested in Roman Britain, Richborough being an important port. It was easy to imagine what the site looked like through the centuries. Really enjoyed this one! Recommended!
Hannah — Google review
Part of the English Heritage ... well worth getting a subscription if you are in Kent there are so many EH sites to see Richborough has a great audio guide so you get an expert to explain how the buildings were constructed and used. There is also a small exhibition showing artifacts from the site. Amazing how far it is now from the sea considering it was build at the seafront (the coast had moved not the fort 😀)
Emma D — Google review
I didn’t realise this was an English Heritage site so was pleasantly surprised when I came here. My friend and I were greeted by a friendly member of staff whom offered me a discount to become a member. I am now! There is a museum here as well which was very interesting to look through. You then go out and can have a leisurely walk around the fort. A whole wealth of information on the boards as well. Fascinating to know this was the gateway to Britannica!! There is a car park here but it’s free. Added bonus is there are toilets here. Now these are compostable toilets, your waste helps the planet! Was weird not flushing though 😂 I would definitely come back here again. As a Roman history lover it is a must see. Thank you for an enjoyable experience!
Kathryn H — Google review
Really enjoyed our first visit. What a great little hidden gem. We found the staff extremely helpful and friendly. Particularly Lindsay and Neil. Thank you so much.
Megan L — Google review
Had a lovely visit here this weekend. Such an interesting site. Nice little museum and accompanying audio guide. Very friendly, kind staff. I was also lucky that there was a very knowledgeable guide ( Jonathan who is normally at Deal Castle.) to chat to,who was able to answer my questions and enlighten me on what life would have been like at this fascinating site. I was also able to take my dog along which is always a bonus. Well worth a visit.

If you are interested in Roman history then this is for you, Richborough is where the Romans first landed and built a fort and town, a lot of interesting history, easy to get to and a good couple of hours, well worth a look

The White Mill Rural Heritage Centre is a charming destination with plenty to offer visitors. The center features a superb museum showcasing fascinating exhibits from the past, including agricultural implements and a fully equipped Cobber's Workshop and Smithy. The mill itself presents a unique story of flour production throughout history, complete with original machinery still in place. Visitors can also explore the Miller's Cottage for insights into the lives of the families who lived and worked there.
Superb Museum with lots of interesting exhibits from a bye-gone era. Many interesting agricultural implements and a full Cobber's Workshop as well a Smithy. The Mill itself tells it's own unique storey of flour production through the ages, with original machinery still in place within the building. The Millers Cottage gives an insight into the Family who lived and worked there. Dave our Guide was excellent and took the time to answer any questions we had with his faultless in-depth knowledge. A very pleasant way to spend an hour and the work of the Volunteers is outstanding. Will definitely return.
David M — Google review
Run by volunteers, and no entry fee but donations welcome. Windmill had its sails off for repair when we were there, but, its all a work in progress. Had wander through the workshop and chat with the workers then guided round the agricultural museum and cottages etc. Very welcoming and informative staff, small cafe on site with a number of gifts to purchase.
Dave D — Google review
Such a interesting place, thought we would be there for 10 mins but were there at least a hour and half. A lovely lady showed us round and told us how the windmill was used and showed us the home of the family that lived there. It was free entry but we gave a generous donation as it was more than worth it. Great place and well worth the visit.
Kay — Google review
Fantastic little historic gem that is well worth visiting. There is a lot to see here, from the heritage buildings with rooms just as they would have been long ago to the collections of agricultural tools and machinery. And then, there is the mill itself, the blacksmith's and the workshops. Very friendly, helpful volunteers are the icing on a most excellent cake.
Nick K — Google review
Excellent well worth a visit all the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. We had a really good time and learned a lot. Lovely cup of tea and coffee in the small cafe with sells a few items.
Kath G — Google review
I've given 5 stars because I know that this is a very interesting place to visit, however on Tuesday 9 July we attempted to visit and drove into the entrance to find that there was absolutely nowhere to park, so drove out again. I'm sure this wasn't because it was full of visitors vehicles on a weekday, so must have been volunteer's vehicles taking up all the car park spaces.
Jacqueline M — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. Run by a group of lovely volunteers. There is more to see than just the windmill and they have some wonderful exhibits including the miller's cottage and the blacksmiths and cobblers workshop. The windmill has steep ladders so it is best to wear trousers and flat shoes if you want to go up!
Wendy A — Google review
What a lovely place! Well worth a visit. I think I would say suitable for adults and thoughtful, inquisitive children aged 7 and above. Run by volunteer enthusiasts, one of whom will show you around. An informative trip back in time. They're restoring the cap and sails at the moment with a view to having it working again in 2022. Don't let the lack of the windmill outline put you off; there's still lots to see and learn. Free, but donations very welcome.

Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust, located in Kent, offers a diverse range of bird species and rare flora and fauna. The observatory hosts various events such as moth evenings, guided wildlife walks, open days, and educational classes for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful surroundings by taking part in wildflower and bee identification courses or bat walks. The facility is equipped with amenities like a new pre-bookable mobility scooter to ensure everyone can explore the area comfortably.
Such a magical place. The staff at the observatory were wonderful. So passionate about nature and preserving the ecology of things. We learnt about moths and their habitats. We got to see so many species of moth. Absolutely wonderful.
Georgina R — Google review
A bird observatory with an extensive nature reserve attached, although not as one continuous area. Well worth a visit during migration. Has a small shop and did cups of tea. Parking for about 16 cars(?). You do have to pay to get onto the private road to the Observatory but all details are on their website
Michael C — Google review
Had a fantastic day there for the migration watch. Very helpful staff and a wonderful location
Neil C — Google review
They have an arrangement with the Sandwich Bay Estate re the toll. If you are just going to the reserve it’s £1. We were also offered a ticket for £5 which would let us drive through. Entry to the reserve is free, you can give a donation and there’s a shop. Go on a walk Sounds like you never know what you’ll see but you could see lots or things you wouldn’t expect. A couple of weeks and they expect hundreds of goldcrests. Owls were seen this morning. Steffan, Site Manager, led our walk. We didn’t go far in our hour but heard and saw a few birds and he gave us tips on where to see things on the reserve and generally. We’ll be back.
Sharon A — Google review
What a wonderfully peaceful place to visit for a walk and to watch the birds. The volunteer at the Field Centre was helpful and knowledgeable, and gave us a good walking route to follow. It was an incredibly peaceful place with zero traffic noise apart from the odd car that passed along the toll road. The Scrape was my favourite area, a lake with two well equipped and comfortable hides. The other bird watchers were friendly and happy to share their knowledge. You have to pay £1 for the toll road (£5 if you want to continue along it to Deal), if you are not a member. Will definitely be back!
Alison W — Google review
Took a long time to find this place, very poor signage. Once at the visitors centre there was no one to welcome us or suggest how we could view birds. The only sign indicated a hide some considerable distance away. I love spotting birds but I can't walk very long distances. This centre could improve considerably.
Jan S — Google review
Amazing events! The moth evenings are great for children as are the guided wildlife walks every Friday and Sunday. Their Open Day on August bank holiday is always a highlight of our year. Classes in the winter also for people wanting to learn more about the natural world. Really recommend the Wildflower and Bee identification courses when they run them oh and the bat walks! Otherwise just a great place to have a wander to see birds, orchids, insects and all wildlife really. The field centre volunteers are really friendly and happy to point you in the right direction for walks. These can be found on OS map app too. Visiting their reserve Restharrow Scrape is a must, especially if you're into photography or just want to connect with nature. At only £1 at the toll gate it's a bargain too!
Becky J — Google review
Knowledgeable staff and well stocked visitor shop. We left with lots of bird food for our garden feeders! Unfortunately due to covid restrictions the hides are closed but work has been done to ensure viewing platforms are available.

River
The River Stour offers a picturesque setting with willow-lined banks and charming cafes emitting the aroma of fresh brownies. The town is filled with wooden staircases, creating a quaint atmosphere. It's an ideal spot for wildlife enthusiasts, as ducks, coots, kingfishers, water voles, gulls, and various small birds can be spotted along the riverbank. The river's flow varies based on rainfall levels and can sometimes flood footpaths.
River stour beautiful walks I love walk from city to Chartam out to chilham lakes so so pretty 💖 so much wildlife to see . Different times of the day atmospheric along the river and different seasons. When nightfall can see the bats flitter above the stour.
Ally L — Google review
Chalk stream springing from near Lenham, flowing through Ashford, Wye, Chartham, Canterbury, Fordwich, Stodmarsh national nature reserve, Grove Ferry, Sandwich and joining the sea between Pegwell and Sandwich Bay. There are river tours via punt around Canterbury, canoes by wild canoes from Fordwich and Grove Ferry, and boat between Fordwich and the sea. There is a hard surfaced 3 mile long path between Chartham and Canterbury by the edge of the river, allowing access to all although the kissing gates and cattle grids are a challenge to many mobility scooters. There is good wildlife watching along much of the rivers length, especially the dragonflies and damselflies with Nolfolk Hawkers and willow emeralds now often seen. There are now beavers living on the Stour, mostly from Fordwich down river. It is not uncommon to see feeding signs, and it you are lucky, the animals themselves.
Francesca P — Google review
Always such a lovely walk along the riverbank, lots of wildlife to be seen generally including ducks, coot's, kingfishers, water voles, gulls and many small wild birds. The river is very high when we have extensive rainfall which then means the flow is much faster and can sometimes flood and cover the footpaths, as it has done in my video filmed in December 2019. Still it's one of my favourite places all year round. Peaceful, serene and very beautiful..
Tray N — Google review
Beautiful place I walk along the river alot. Ducks, fish, swans, herons you name it even rats on occasion but it's all nature and if you like nature you will love it. Helps me after a difficult day

Indian restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Sandwich, Namaste Sandwich is a culinary gem that has quickly captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This delightful eatery offers an array of Indian dishes that are bursting with flavor, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The ambiance is inviting, featuring beautiful decor and a cozy layout that ensures you won't feel cramped even when it's bustling with diners.
First visit recently after hearing raving reviews by friends for the past few months. Absolutely loved it ! The food is so delicious and full of flavours. Its hard to put into words...you just need to book and eat here to understand how good it is. The staff are lovely ! So friendly and happily talk you through the menu. Quick service...quirky little restaurant. Nice touch being able to see right into the kitchen. Booked again for this weekend!
Natasha L — Google review
Friendly service and speedy. Cosy nice decor. Sadly the sauces/ chutneys provided with the poppadum were uneatable. Not a good first introduction to the food. Was very excited to try the food after reading the reviews but left underwhelmed. The curry sauces were distinctly average. .
Victoria E — Google review
All the dishes we ordered were super delicious. We had seabas- paneer-chicken- kebabs- here’s rice- daal and various other dishes. The service was fast and the food came out hot. There were 8 of us and everyone enjoyed the food and of course the drinks. Highly recommended this restaurant if you are visiting Dover or living in the area.
Ambika N — Google review
Great restaurant. They even made me a special desert for my birthday. The quality of the meat and fish are very high. The staff were really friendly. I highly recommend.
Daniel M — Google review
I was rather disappointed with the food. Even the dips for the poppadoms were very runny and no salad/onion with it. The main course I had was Chicken Dansak and there was very little chicken in the dish! It was mostly sauce and not very spicy. Many items seemed like there were pureed. I would not recommend this restaurant for food. The staff were friendly.
Gazza H — Google review
The food was ok and luke warm nothing special compared to other authentic indian cuisine. Service was relatively good at the beginning, and food came out super quick and was cleared quickly too. No one checked on us following the table being cleared. Not asked if we would have liked more drinks or dessert. We would have stayed but the service wasn't where it needed to be.
Michelle W — Google review
One of the best indian restaurants I've been to! The food was amazing, the staff were very friendly and the atmosphere and decor are lovely. Will 100 percent be visiting again. Worth every penny!

Sandwich Guildhall Museum is a must-visit in Sandwich, offering a glimpse into the town's origins up to the present day. The museum houses the historic Sandwich Magna Carta from 1300 AD and provides insights into the rich history of the area. Visitors can also explore other attractions in White Cliffs Country to celebrate National Museums Day. The museum boasts friendly and knowledgeable staff who offer personal tours, providing delightful stories and anecdotes about the town's heritage.
A free museum with a lovely set of volunteers. Our kids were treated to a full walk/talk through of the court room and allowed to sit in the juror box and also pretend to be prisoners. The whole family enjoyed it.

What a wonderful museum! Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. The gentleman who gave us an impromptu private tour was so informative and funny too, it was one of our favorite experiences on our trip to Kent, highly recommend!
Grace H — Google review
Oh my goodness, what a lovely little museum! The gentleman in the entrance was amazing, a very knowledgeable fellow. To be honest, his voice was lovely and soothing; I could’ve listened to him all day! The lady that’s there was a delight to talk with about the local history too. She was so kind and engaging, my friend and I learnt a great deal! It’s free to enter as well; the courtroom there was beautiful. The stained glass window was captivating. Please come to Sandwich, and to this museum, you’ll realise how important Sandwich was in the past.
Kathryn H — Google review
Small but absolutely amazing museums. We received some unique information from one of the museum guides. Museum is free for everyone. I highly recommend to visit and spend there a half hour.

A hidden gem in the heart of Sandwich! The Guildhall Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s rich history, and we were especially grateful to Eileen for her warm welcome and generous time. She had a brilliant way of making the area’s history engaging and relatable – thank you, Eileen, for making our visit so memorable.
Magda W — Google review
It is free to enter. Well worth half an hour of your time if in town. A small but interesting collection on the history of the town to see first. Then a short escorted visit to the courtroom, which dates back to the 16th century.

St Peter's Church in Sandwich is a hidden gem with a rich history and vibrant community. The church still rings the Curfew Bell every evening at 8pm, a tradition dating back to Medieval times. Visitors can explore various stalls inside, and for a small fee, climb the tower for breathtaking views of the town and beyond. The church serves as a hub for community activities, offering a cafe, crafts, and valuable information.
We stumbled across this church by accident and what a find! Inside there are various stalls selling all sorts. Dog friendly inside but not up the tower. The staff that we met were amazing! We decided to pay to go up the tower (£3.50 each, well worth it). A lovely lady looked after our dog for the duration of our adventure up the tower which was so kind! What a star ⭐️ The ascent up the tower is not to be missed! Views all over the town and beyond! Binoculars to borrow and a guide to the views. Loved it!
Jen — Google review
Attractive historic church now unexpectedly hosting a community hub and perhaps the country's most unusual charity shop. The building has been well preserved, and it's possible to ascend the medieval tower for a charge of £3.50, offering good views over the town. The majority of the church building seen today dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The distinctive onion dome decoration, characteristic of churches in this region, was added in the 17th century. The church has a light airy feel inside, with high ceilings, elegant windows and some impressive carved recesses for tombs of wealthy townspeople.
Andrew T — Google review
Located in the centre of town, St Peter's church is a lovely place to pop in and enjoy its cafe and gardens. There is often a charity market. You can also climb up the belfry to have a breathtaking view on the town of Sandwich. The church is open 10 am - 3 pm. The church entry is free but to climb up the belfry you should pay £3.50. P.S. I try to share specific information. If the review was useful, put 👍. I don't get any "goodies", but other tourists will see this review first. Have a good mood and exciting travels!🌍☀️🪂

Great place that holds community events visited St Peters Bell Tower had great views at the top, over sandwich etc and was nice seeing the bells inside the tower
Kim S — Google review
Just £3.50 to climb the tower what a great experience! Really fun to stand next to the bells when they chime. I only wish I had gone at midday. And what a view from the top. Not to be missed if you are in the area.
Adam C — Google review
The church exterior is very interesting as it is composed of flint, stone, brick and rubble. Together they combine to make a very appealing structure. Inside the building, which ceased to be a working church soon after WWII, is well utilised and is a centre of the community. The graveyard is kept beautifully and has seating and attractive plantings
Ian Y — Google review
Charity shop in the church, with friendly volunteers. Bought 4 books (and was going to buy none...). For a few £s you can climb the stairs to the top platform, where you have a lovely 4-direction view over Sandwich & surroundings.

Sandwich Medieval Centre offers a journey back in time to the medieval era, where visitors can witness regular demonstrations of ancient crafts and skills such as blacksmithing and calligraphy. The center's passionate volunteers showcase their dedication and enthusiasm for various projects, including the restoration of a medieval ship. Visitors can engage with knowledgeable staff dressed in period attire, who provide thorough explanations about arrowheads, metalwork, and medieval tools.
What a delightful historic workshop where you can learn by doing (or watching the volunteers do their amazing work). We were so enthralled by the passion, dedication and enthusiasm around the projects going in this place and had the most wonderful chat with Steve the Blacksmith! It is so impressive to see the thought and process that goes behind the medieval ship restoration. We also loved the extremely thorough explanation behind all the arrowheads, metal work and medieval tools. If you're planning a visit to Sandwich highly recommend visiting their website to book a workshop experience day! Very much looking forward to following their journey on the ongoing projects!

A wonderful place and resource on Sandwich’s historic quayside. My partner and I visited the first time for the Hoodening in January and got talking to Steve the wonderful blacksmith. We went back for his full day medieval blacksmithing workshop. He is an incredibly knowledgeable and kind man and a very patient teacher. All the volunteers there are lovely and I recommend anyone who is interested to check out their events and workshops! A really valuable community run resource for history lovers.

The No Name Shop in Sandwich, Kent is a delightful French deli and bistro that offers an array of delicious food options. Visitors can enjoy generous portions of salads and toasted sandwiches, as well as a variety of vegan and gluten-free choices. The shop is known for its friendly service and welcoming atmosphere.
What a find! Incredible value. Some of the largest salads and toasted sandwiches ever seen on planet earth. We had no idea helpings would be this large and had to ask to take half of our "lunch" home for dinner. Amazing tasting bread and butter, divine cheeses. Everything was seriously good. Do yourself a favour, especially if you're hungry, and visit the No Name Shop right in the middle of Sandwich. Highly, highly recommend. 🥪🧀☕

Great bistro for lunch in Sandwich! Tasty ingredients, quality homemade food and a chilled out vibe to the whole place. We stumbled upon the bistro really close to the Guildhall car park. It was perfect on a chilled out day celebrating someone's birthday. The historic building is nicely decorated, with the old windows bringing gorgeous light and breeze into the place. The seated area is on the first floor, although the deli counter downstairs would have some takeaway lunch options too. The food was all very yummy and there were lots of options. Luckily, our vegetarian and our gluten intolerant eaters even had lots to choose from for both savoury and desert courses. The server and owner were both friendly and went out of their way to be helpful without being imposing at all. Like, taking notice and providing dessert menus before we needed to ask and also finding the last of some homemade custard too. 10/10 would recommend. We would all happily come back here. Thank you!

Love from the 1st sight 🥰 love the building, decoration & product display to the best-ever baguette from crust to the filling. I have tried to ask the lady serving and it is French garlic saussage, so special⭐️. I would never forget Sandwich🌈

Altough there is nothing stopping me from crossing the border to France and enjoy their cuisine, I have found this gem of a place, which keeps me entertained with French cuisine and I appreciate the authentic flavors of France. Obviously, a french meal can never be complete without a glass of house white or red wine. On this occasion, I went for red, which complements nicely with the meat and cheese dish. If the word cosy had a physical attribute to it No Name Shop would be a perfect example. Although my work has kept at a distance, I shall make every effort to return to this magnificent place yet also for another authentic Pain au chocolat.

Good food & quick to arrive (total was £11.90 including the coffee)! Lovely cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. There is a shop downstairs where you can buy cheese, olives, jams, pastries etc 😄

I wanted to have a good sandwich in Sandwich. Melted toastie with braised lead and mushroom really hit the spot. This French bistro is a very pleasant place. I would recommend also cream brûlée from the counter in the shop downstairs

A quaint place with an interesting name, nice bakes and kind hosts. I had a baguette with vegan mozzarella and pesto and a chocolate croissant that were both quite tasty. Would definitely visit again to try the other sweet baked treats! Oh and, dogs are welcome and you can purchase puppocinos for them at this cosy joint!

Nature preserve
Gazen Salts Nature Reserve is a 15-acre man-made sanctuary featuring winding paths that lead through various habitats. The central lake is home to a diverse collection of wildfowl, making it an enjoyable destination for families. Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the reserve, with ongoing efforts to improve the wildlife habitats and reintroduce overgrown ponds. While smaller in size, the reserve offers a tranquil setting for leisurely walks, picnics, and quiet reading by the lake.
Very peaceful, car park right next to it and no dogs allowed which means it's even more preserved

Beautiful, peaceful and well kept nature reserve. Flat and easy to walk around with a lovely duck pond to sit by. Spent about an hour wandering round on a sunny Sunday morning and will definitely return (with bread for the ducks next time)
Matt P — Google review
I recently visited this stunning nature reserve and was genuinely impressed by the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty. The walking trails were well-maintained and clearly signposted, making it easy to explore without feeling lost. I saw a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and even a deer in the distance, which made the experience even more memorable. There are plenty of quiet spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings, and the mix of woodland, wetlands, and open fields kept things interesting throughout the walk. It’s a great place for photography, family outings, or just a solo escape into nature. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for anyone looking to unwind, reconnect with nature, and enjoy some fresh air. Highly recommended for nature lovers or anyone needing a break from city life.

Oh wow what a beautiful place to meet and eat. The staff were so polite and friendly and they made you feel totally welcome. It had a log burning fire which was a really welcomed part of our visit. The food was superb, fresh, hot and looked to nice to eat all home cooking aswell which was a bonus. They was doing 1 course for £12, 2 courses for £14, & 3 courses for £17 a really good deal & well worth the visit We were little piglets on this visit. We had the Pate, the Soup of the day & the Mushrooms for starters. Sorry no pictures tucked in to quick. For mains we had, the Halibut, the Forerib, & the Pie of the day. For the Deserts we had, Red Velvet Cheesecake & Lemon Cheesecake Please give this beautiful place a call and book we felt totally comfortable and safe especially with the present circumstances

We heard that the George and Dragon had recently re-opened with new owners so wanted to have a go. We sat inside, option to sit out in courtyard but you had to order your food at the bar for that, nice heavy metal furniture outside but no cushions so imagined not very comfy It was a Sunday, and a Sunday menu ( Only) was on offer. Good choices but too hot for a roast dinner so went with the burger ( and my friend went with 2 starters, which she loved). It was nice, chips too salty. Good array of puddings but was too full. Good service from Charlie, thank you We will be back
Pandora M — Google review
We had an amazing lunch here today. The staff were so kind, welcoming and knowledgeable. Service was prompt and professional with time taken to ensure everything was ok. The starters were very well priced and exceptional value as the quality was fantastic! Two of us had fish and chips which were huge and the batter was super crispy and full of flavour with home made chips & peas. My mum had the hake and said it was one of the best meals she’s had out in a while. Can’t speak highly enough of the food/service/pub. We will be back that’s for sure.
Chris D — Google review
Delicious food and reasonably priced. This is a friendly little pub with a tasty traditional menu. The portions are huge, We had the pie which was a wedge from a large pie, rich and moist with just the right amount of meat and mushrooms. The mashed potatoes were buttery and the vegetables served separately were a great addition. Also extra gravy without having to ask. The only issue I had was being directed to a table by a back door when there were other free tables in much cosier spots. Needless to say I asked for one of those but did feel for the table next to the door as people were coming and going to drinking tables outside and it was a cool night. Other than that some missing meringue from the Eton mess which was quickly resolved caused a laugh with the staff and us so all good fun. Definitely recommended,we will be going back.

Coffee shop
If you're wandering through Sandwich, make sure to stop by Goats That Dance, a charming little café that perfectly captures the essence of a cozy coffee shop. Nestled on a quiet street corner, this delightful spot offers an idyllic outdoor seating area where you can soak up the sun while sipping on some of the best coffee around—sourced from local roasters in Deal. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, thanks to friendly staff who make every visit feel special.
The platonic ideal of a coffee shop. The outside seating is idylic in every way, and cute in many other ways. The shop is tucked in a corner of a not so busy street, cozy in a way only a small space such as this can be. The coffee tastes of warm summer days with a light breeze, and the tea cup is in a cute stack with its pot. The cakes are all excellent, a delight you can allow yourself and stop feeling bad about as soon as your first bite. I will remember this day for years.
10 T — Google review
Well... I'd been on a long 13 mile hike/walk from Deal to and around Sandwich area. I missed the hourly train back to Deal, so, I wanted a coffee and cake ideally. Had a quick check on Google and chose 'Goats that Dance' as a place to try. Albeit a small place, very amenable staff, and I really enjoyed the coffee and lemon drizzle cake. So much so I had to rush back to the Sandwich railway station with 1 minute to spare!
Phil P — Google review
This place is great! Brilliant coffee (the best I've had in a while) and from a local coffee roaster too, in Deal. Megan was so friendly and welcoming it was a treat. Sitting is available inside and over the lane in the churchyard too. Simple menu but, for us, everything we wanted. Loved the individuality of the cafe, even down to the beautiful coffee spoons. Couldn't fault a thing - well done!!! Next time in Sandwich this is a must.

What a fabulous little cafe. Great coffee and a wonderful atmosphere. Definitely stop in when you're in Sandwich. Super friendly staff.

It's a great place to grab a coffee and a piece of cake. It feels like you're in your lounge at home. Quirky, intimate and chilled. The coffee is lovely. I had a soya caramel latte and it was smooth and strong... perfect! The cakes and scones look scrumptious although I didn't order any. There is a dog ice cream too! They have a takeaway window for when you are on the hop and it all feels lovely and old-school. There is plenty of outdoor seating in the churchyard opposite for the sunny days, and you can order inside and they'll bring it out to you. We will be back!

In the heart of Sandwich, nestled away in a quiet section of the centre, is a charming and pleasant coffee shop with a vibrant and eccentric atmosphere. Appears to be a popular spot for residents and tourists alike to socialise and meet new people. Extremely progressive and tolerant in appearance, displaying LGBT flags and permitting dogs within, (and goats if you have one). Tl;dr: Good café, good coffee, and good people.

Sandwich Toll Bridge is a historic swing bridge that has been a crossing point over the River Stour for centuries. King Canute granted the monks of Canterbury the right to operate a ferry here in 1023. The bridge, built in 1773, features stone arches and a Dutch-type timber center portion replaced with an iron swing bridge in 1892. Nearby, visitors can find quaint boats, pubs, and flower displays.
Very nice ice cream served here; when we dropped one it was replaced free of charge with a smile!
David M — Google review
This is a review of the toll bridge itself, NOT the restaurant nearby! This is a historical landmark still preserved and in daily use by traffic accessing the boatyard and nearby discovery park, which is Sandwich answer to Silicon Valley! I’m use the weight of the traffic is not doing it much good but it is still in use. What once was traversed by chariots is now crossed by electric cars- how things have changed in a few centuries! Worth a visit, pretty place to walk and some eateries nearby.
Philip H — Google review
OK, it's not much to see, but must have been amazing when it was in use. Seeing a chariot turn up pulled by 6 "beasts". Wow. Watch out when you do get up close to have a look. It's a confusing junction for traffic, so expect last minute changes of direction. And don't blunk when the bus goes through the arch at full pelt

We enjoyed our final holiday evening in the pub with a meal and a few scoops. The young lady on the bar and waiting on was so friendly and helpful and was clearly an asset to the company. She went out of her way to tend to our needs with a 3 year old in tow. I had a sunday roast and the beef was a little tough but very tasty. We asked for extra veggies which was no problem at all for the chef to provide. The craic with the locals at the bar was also top drawer. A lovely older lady who used to be a landlady had plenty of time for conversation. Would recommend 👌

Family gathering to celebrate a birthday party. We were a little disappointed to find our booking made in Feb 2022 had not been booked. We were however allowed to have use of the lounge. Due to the booking error first impressions it was untidy, bar area was dirty there was no paper towels, toilet roll in the toilets. Edward who dealt with us on the day, helped out as much as he was able. Due to this it tainted the experience as it was not as organised as we would have liked. That said the gathering was enjoyed, we were able to bring our own food and drinks. The building was as expected, beautiful looking but tired inside. Though we had the issue with the booking, we would try the venue again.

Visitors praise the friendly staff who go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant dining experience. Guests can also enjoy their meals al fresco while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
When in Sandwich…. Yes, we totally went there to experience the home of the humble bread and filling. So this café is not exactly the very place where the sandwich was invented, but the staff were lovely and we’re happy to share a story about its origins. The sandwiches we had - the Earl of Sandwich roast beef, the cheese and ale chutney and the tuna mayo - were all lovely and fresh with generous amounts of ingredients.

I can finally say I've had a Sandwich in Sandwich. As the home of Sandwiches it's surprising there's only 1 sandwich shop. Well this is the best one in town. Check out the menu and join the club. They close at 5pm latest so don't wait. We had the Earl of Sandwich and The Farm House. Both were exquisitely made. Recommended.

Well placed to be a world famous sandwich shop but wish I hadn't gone. High price, generous servings of disappointment, and tight on fillings. £7.80 for a prawn Marie rose with less prawn than a Tesco's sarnie. A ham sandwich with 1 slice of mediocre ham. Major let down. Could be great there.
Alex M — Google review
Lovely sandwich shop where sandwiches are made to order, come with a side salad and coleslaw, and nicely presented. We sat outside in the market square as it was a sunny day and can't fault this place. Had a coffee to compliment the sandwich and it's not overpriced at all. Will certainly recommend and visit if in the area again.

For a sandwich shop in Sandwich you’d expect decent sandwiches! Don’t bother going here it’s a tourist trap. Bread was cheap and nasty, prawn sandwich was dripping with water and salad hadn’t been washed I could taste the chemicals on it. Rubbish.

Nature preserve
Monks Wall Nature Reserve is a serene and picturesque destination located in the heart of nature. It offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, with its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere. The reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the well-maintained trails, immersing themselves in the beauty of the natural surroundings.
This is a quiet 60-acre wetland nature reserve owned by Sandwich Town Council. It is located on the outskirts of Sandwich and can be reached on foot from the Sandwich Quayside by crossing the old Tollbridge, walking north for about 300 metres then left on a permissive farm track. Alternatively, drive to the small car park at the north-western end of the Monks Way Road and enter the Reserve from there. The Reserve has interesting wildlife at all times of the year, with wintering wildfowl in increasing numbers, breeding wetland birds, some unusual flowers including various orchids and a range of insect species including interesting butterflies and dragonflies. Work is being done to increase the amount of open water at all seasons, in order to encourage even more wetland species. Public access around the Reserve is by a circular footpath along embankments, which gives good views across all of the main area. The walking surface is rough in places and unsuited to people with mobility issues. Some areas of the Reserve are off-limits to the public and in order to protect the wildlife, the whole area is a dog-free zone (except for assistance dogs and these must be kept on a lead). There are two public bird watching hides but no toilet facilities.

St Clement's Church, a charming Anglican church nestled in the heart of Sandwich, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 12th century. Its striking Norman tower stands as a testament to its architectural heritage and is one of only three Norman churches still actively serving its community. The church has undergone various renovations over the centuries, including the rebuilding of the chancel in the 13th century and additions like chapels in later years.
Now the only active Anglican Church in the town. This is a lovely church, beautifully modernised without losing its ancient splendour
John V — Google review
The church's outstanding feature is the remarkable Norman tower. It is the only one of the three Norman churches in Sandwich to remain in use as a church.
Ian Y — Google review
Splendid service on Sunday, with a chat and a cup of tea after, the church yard is well looked after and with Bee hives.
Roy W — Google review
Although ultimately this is a church yes, but not all churches are the same. The feeling I have in the church yard and near the graves is of immense peace and tranquility. Thoroughly recommended for a sunny afternoon lunch hour if you need to be on your own in the summer obviously far too chilly
Smallville K — Google review
Beautiful old church in Sandwich and open every day. So welcoming.

The central tower and east and west part of the nave 12th century; in the 13th century, the chancel was rebuilt with a north chapel and, in the 14th century, a south chapel was added. Fifteenth-century octagonal font has lost the statues from its corners, has the arms of ancient Sandwich, and on the south face, the arms of Archdeacon Robert Hallum. Lovely floor tiles. St Margaret's Chapel has a complete medieval tiled floor. Peaceful and lovingly kept.

St Clements is a church of England church...if you only attend based on Google reviews, then that is a bit strange? It's a church in the heart of its community. But if you do attend because of the reviews, its beautiful inside.

St Mary's Arts Centre in Sandwich is a former church that has been repurposed for various events such as wedding receptions, exhibitions, shows, and craft fairs. Despite its unassuming entrance, the interior is surprisingly spacious and features original elements like stained glass windows, a lectern, and burial stones. The venue also includes a kitchen area, toilets, and a stage. Visitors have attended concerts and Christmas crafts fairs at this well-maintained space.
Attended a function here last night. Lovely venue, so pretty inside. A lovely place for people to get together, just as a church was intended. So good to see it being maintained as an historic building, and not left to fall into disrepair. Thank you.
Sue S — Google review
I didn't pay for a table for me and my wife and our friends to sit and look at some fat birds arse all night won't be going back.
Raymond B — Google review
This church is one of two in Sandwich that are no longer used for their original purpose. It has been given over to wedding receptions, exhibitions, shows and craft fairs etc. It is much more spacious inside than the entrance suggests. There are many original features such as stain glass windows, lectern and burial stones. No parking other than fee paying car park opposite, or street parking slightly further away. There is a kitchen area and toilets and stage.
Colin N — Google review
An interesting use of a church the arts shows are well worth a visit as original picture and prints available
Jeff H — Google review
Attended evening concert 'The Power of Three' by Classical Sandwich Festival. Church still retains its serenity although no longer used for its original purpose. Very well maintained.
Richard G — Google review
I visited as the church was the venue to celebrate my niece's wedding. The church is very old but well maintained and could suit a variety of events.
Tim D — Google review
A really lovely venue for a special occasion. Sean Matthews a great help in booking and making the most of the facilities there. Just a pity that the owners will not allow the local community to raise money to improve everything. It could be an absolute gem.

The USN P22 Patrol Boat, a remarkable piece of history from World War II, is now docked in Sandwich, Kent. This fully operational vessel was originally built in Germany in 1952 to patrol the Rhine River and is one of only seventeen Type 21 gunships. It offers thrilling river tours along the picturesque River Stour, where passengers can enjoy stunning views and even spot seals at Pegwell Bay.
We turned up on a day that it wasn't open, but it was still good to see from the outside. This is a boat with quite a lot of history in both real life as well as film. So make sure you take 1 minute out have a quick look. You've probably parked right next to it anyway!
Simon F — Google review
USN P22 Patrol Boat based in sandwich,is a real patrol boat from the second World war,and it's the only patrol boat with engine's and is fully working. It's owner is my brother and I've driven it partly down the river Stour,it was a fantastic experience. The boat is for hire for rides down and back the river Stour. It's engine's are so powerful that entering the Royal Harbour of Ramsgate the captain has to turn one engine off, because it's too fast with both engine's working.

United States Navy P22 Gunboat, built in Germany in 1952-to patrol the Rhine River. One of seventeen type 21 gunships. Its new home is in Sandwich, Kent, UK. Here it serves as an exhibition and now has a license to carry passengers for river tours along the River Stour to the mouth of the river at Pegwell bay, where a colony of seals live.

Nestled between Sandwich and Deal, Felderland PYO 'Pick Your Own' Farm stands out as one of Kent's largest farms, making it an ideal destination for a family outing. Here, visitors can enjoy the delightful experience of picking their own strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and more seasonal fruits throughout the year. The farm features a charming coffee shop where you can grab hot snacks to refuel after your fruit-picking adventure.
Very friendly and welcoming staff, fantastic for children and adults but definitely wear welly boots as it was very very muddy. Had no idea there were so many different varieties of pumpkins. They provided us with a wheel barrow which was a life saver as pumpkins can be heavy. Food and drink available to buy on site and a kids playground too with lots of selfie worthy opportunities. Me and my son will be back for summer! Thanks guys.
Elaine S — Google review
Love this for a traditional pick your own place with great quality fruit. The prices seem steep if you compare to supermarket but the experience of picking and quality of the fruit makes it a really good value morning or afternoon family activity. Great cafe as well :-)
Rosamond M — Google review
Wide variety of pumpkins and large field to squelch around in. Well thought out experience with activities for children in addition to pumpkin picking. Great choice of food outlets and awesome photo opportunities. It was our first time visiting and we will definitely be back next year!
Sophie B — Google review
Lovely place to visit with so much choice of fresh fruit to pick. The strawberries are under cover - so don’t let the weather change your plans! The whole site is clean, tidy and plenty of room for parking. It’s encouraging to see eco friendly tubs and packing used. The staff are friendly and helpful, plus a huge bonus they have a park, lots of benches and somewhere you can purchase hot and cold drinks, plus snacks etc.
Hollie D — Google review
Attended today for my partners birthday with her parents and were told we couldn’t share a pot as a couple, so her parents had to give up their pot so she could walk round with me and they had to wait at the cafe as they were told they weren’t allowed to walk through the strawberry field with us, I would highly recommend amending this rule as i can picture many families and couples having the same issue. This would’ve made all the difference in my review as we had a nice time would’ve been nice to share it with the rest of her family.

Honestly , if you can get out here. Do it! What amazing hospitality. I’m so happy I went today. A bit of everything for everyone. Children’s play park with ample amounts of toys and games for all. Highly recommended

Lovely place. We enjoyed this far more than we expected. Not just a pyo experience but things for the children 2 do and somewhere 2 get a cuppa. Highly recommend
Ursula O — Google review
All the fruit so good!! You pay for the fruit bowl of your preference you and then you fill it up with as much fruit you can put in. The fruit was so fresh, tasty and juicy! Only one thing: make it pet friendly, at least in the cafe area!

Attended Christmas carols. Very warm welcome from several of the congregation. Full of charm and history. Especially the outstanding wall screen above the nave.

Beautiful old church in the middle of a quaint little village. The ramp access isn't great at all but with help it can be managed. It's a church with an old feel about it, stained glass windows and old pews . It's what I call a proper church just lovely
Kirsty W — Google review
My Great Great grandfather is buried in the graveyard outside of the church. If you go into the church you'll find that it is quite large inside. There are people there that will help you with the history of the church, also there are displays around the building that help you take in the importance of this church building over the years. But, if you really want to get the feel of this church try a Sunday morning Anglican service, it will bring home the true meaning why this church is here in this town of Dover.

I bought a painting when I found this dear art gallery in Sandwich this summer. Both the artwork and gilding, including the frame are breathtaking, indeed the painting is admired by all who see it. It is a centrepiece on my sitting room wall and makes my heart leap each time I see it. It's golden and blue brilliance will get me through the oncoming English winter. Highly recommend these paintings. Professional service, well-wrapped, kind artist and wife team.

Excellent customer service! I was walking by the shop in Sandwich after they were closed, saw a print I liked, the manager happened to be coming outside and he invited me in and and showed me around. I bought the print that caught my eye in the display window. They shipped it to California for me and it arrived with more protection than I brought my first born child home from the hospital with! Very impressed! Will visit again soon!
