Beautifully situated port, tucked in between the old town and a sandy beach. It's overlooked by a brooding Medieval church and a lighthouse perched on the rocky headland to far side of it, and bordered by a long stone promenade which on a good day is a pleasure to stroll along.

It has its charm and most of the historical things to see are located here.

Incredible how this Puerto can quickly change depending on the height of water. When we arrived the level was so low and after lunch it had raised quickly with a relevant wind. Great, fun atmosphere by the port and its restaurants, full of people and music

Chosen at random to break our journey but it was a great place to have stayed longer. Nice beaches, historic buildings, plenty of restaurants and tapas bars, good people watching. Clearly has been a wealthy place for rich Spaniards to visit/holiday.

Mesón El Marinero is a charming and traditional seafood restaurant located in Castro Urdiales, Spain. It offers a wide variety of seafood dishes including oysters, clams, spider crabs, prawns, hake fish, and cod. The convenient location makes it easily accessible for visitors. The restaurant is known for its excellent surf and turf options as well as local Cantabrian wine.
A typical Cantabrian restaurant with excellent typical dishes. I tried several different typical dishes. They were all excellent. The service was fast and friendly. Local red wine is the perfect complement to lunch. A pleasant stop while exploring the old center of Castro Urdiales.

The restaurant is good and the price also. I was waiting to be more expensive, but it is not. I ordered one “sopa de la casa”, “albondigas de bonito” and desert was “torta de meson”. Everything was good, the soup could be better, but in compensation the albondigas was wonderful so in general was good. The desert for me was a little heavy, but was good.

The church stands at the center of Castro Urdiales surrounded by green parkland and offers picturesque views of rolling hills.
Wow!!! Nicee!! The views are incredible! The Church of Santa María in Castro Urdiales is a beautiful historic landmark with stunning views of the town and coastline. Climb up to the church tower for panoramic views of Castro Urdiales and the Bay of Biscay. The interior features notable artworks and religious artifacts. It's a must-visit attraction for history enthusiasts and offers a picturesque backdrop for exploring the charm of Castro Urdiales.

Lovely church. Open at most 22 hours a week, and they don't even bother to tell you when. Apse was cordoned off when I visited, so the most significant works of art were not accessible. A complete disgrace for a Word Heritage site.
Jakob K — Google review
The place is really beautiful standing at the edge of the city placing constant waves. We've witness young boys jumping up from the cliff into a small area of the sea sorrounded by made made dams some perhaps belonging to the church itself. The church adds a good ambiance to the area.

(Translated by Google) The skewers are good. We ordered one of chopitos and another of rabas and they brought the same thing twice. We claimed it was the same, but they said they were rabas. They do not differentiate rabas from a chopitos, apart from that they add a lot of fried onion on the bottom to reduce the amount of the original skewer. In the last photo you can see the amount of onion that exists. Besides, the prices are expensive.

(Translated by Google) The place could have gone unnoticed, as we'd only gone in for a beer and a tapa. However, I was negatively surprised to see the man who appeared to be the manager pick up some piparras that had fallen on the floor and return them directly to the tray. I thought it was a real... If he does that practically in your face, what's inside? Too much sauce for me, but everyone else liked it. - Txuleton croquettes: delicious, lots of flavor. 10/10! - Chicken and jalapeño burrito: good flavor, you can taste the spicy jalapeño. - Scallop stuffed with lobster: disappointing, no flavor, just béchamel sauce. Nice location on the harbor. I went here because of a recommendation and it’s good rating. While they have a full menu, your are recommended to take a look at what’s available from the display case. I chose one Vieira rellena in large shell (scallop pieces baked with a sauce), great; two little zamboriñas (variegated scallop) excellent. I also selected a pre cooked spiced bacalao (cod) which looked good but when served in a plateful of briney watery liquid it didn’t taste great. I did mention that I’d like some vegetables and a salpicón was suggested but it too wasn’t great and I couldn’t finish it. I’m sure had I chosen a fresh fish and/or say green beans or peppers for vegetables I would have faired better.

I keep calling to make a reservation and they hang up, apparently just because the hostess does not speak English. She does not even try to understand or to pass the phone to somebody else, just hangs up without a word. This happened at about 3:15 pm Bilbao time on June 2nd 2025 - I'm writing these details so the management knows what their employees are doing. I've called three times in a row now. Their website does not have an email or any other way to contact the restaurant. This is absolutely unacceptable.
Anastasia P — Google review
Amazing view of the Harbour with the local small boats all around. Food is tasty and typical, accompanies by wine, bread and a summer breeze which makes this a perfect location for local food discovery. I would definitely reccomend it also for the friendly service of staff.

Located right in the town center. They have fresh fish every day. The waiter was trying to sell us the most expensive one which was caught that same day and was super fresh but it would have costed around 70€, and we went for a "rodaballo" instead which was good but not the best fish I've ever had to be honest, taste wise. The pulpo a la gallega was good, good rioja wine. The waiter was chatty and engaging.

Asador Perla

Restaurant
As a couple, we dined at Asador Perla, enjoying a delicious feast of twelve grilled sardines, a generous salad, and accompanied it with a bottle of table wine and bread. The attentive and efficient service complemented the spacious shared tables that offered beautiful views of the bustling port. We had an incredibly pleasant time and would definitely return when back in Castro Urdiales. The price was reasonable considering the quality of food and prime location of the restaurant.
This asador looks like a humble, smoke-kissed shack nestled in the folds of the Basque coast, but on the ground, it’s a temple to the sea. Here, they specialize in bonito—fresh from the deep blue just a few kilometers away. The grillmasters handle it with the reverence it deserves, letting the open flame lick and char the skin until it crackles. Inside, the fish is tender, buttery, and melts like it was born to be eaten. Each bite is a celebration—a burst of lemon that cuts through the richness like a Basque fisherman slicing through the morning fog. It’s simple, it’s soulful, and it’s damn near perfect—proof that the best things in life are pulled straight from the sea and cooked over a wood fire, with a bit of salt, a squeeze of citrus, and a whole lot of love. Don’t waste your money on the salad…

The Cathedral and the castel of Castro Urdiale are so close you can touch them. A man preparing and grilling the fresh fish in front of you. Service is quick as hell, as they are kind. Amazing place. The only thing is the vinegar in the tuna steak, which I didn't find very good.

This is a 'shack' by the harbour serving a really simple menu. The food is all cooked over charcoal and is absolutely delicious - we had the sardines and they are some of the best I've ever had. Everything is really simple, especially the menu and this is an absolute positive. The service when we were there wasn't the greatest but there were clues that someone was having a hard day. Either way - superb. Go here and eat. The food is delicious and very good value.

I had never eaten fish in my life, and I tried it there for the first time: the sardines were exquisite, fresh, and had that unmistakable grilled flavor. Plus, the restaurant has beautiful sea views, which make the meal even more special. For those who aren't as fond of sardines, they also offer bonito, equally tasty and well-prepared. Without a doubt, a highly recommended place to enjoy good fish in an unbeatable setting. (Original) Visité este asador de sardinas y la experiencia fue fantástica.
