Mertola in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Mertola, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Mértola is a striking hilltop town overlooking the Guadiana River, known for its whitewashed houses clustered around a medieval castle. Its layered history is visible in the former mosque converted to a church, well-preserved town walls, and archaeological remains from Roman, Visigothic and Islamic periods. Set within the Vale do Guadiana Natural Park, it offers scenic river views, walking routes and opportunities for birdwatching in a relatively quiet setting. Small museums and signed heritage trails help visitors explore the town’s role as an ancient river port and cultural crossroads.
With favorites like Azenhas do Guadiana, O Repuxo, and Casa do Mineiro, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Espaço Vila Velha and Restaurante O Brasileiro so you can get the best taste of Mertola while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Guadiana Valley Natural Park is a stunning natural area in the southern Alentejo region, featuring a picturesque landscape of wooded hills and the convergence of the Guadiana and Oeiras rivers. The medieval village of Mertola, with its ancient castle and whitewashed houses, overlooks this breathtaking setting.
Guadiana Valley Natural Park, is a natural park in southeastern Portugal. It is one of the 30 areas which are officially under protection in the country. A very beautiful national park in the Guadiana river valley, on the Portuguese-Spanish border.

It's truly gorgeous in this area, that established Natural Park status in 1995. Lots of birdwatching g and of tpu are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the Iberian Lynx. Don't miss visits to Mertola (keeping everything crossed it gers official UNESCO world heritage recognition), Pula do lobo and Praia Fluvial de Mina de São Domingos if you want to cool off in the summer heat.

Lovely place, nice a quiet in April no one else around down by the water. Don't let the colour of the water put you off, its actually clear when you get down to it.

No one has described about how to enter the hiking trails, we started a bit, however there were no clear instructions about valley and hiking trails.

What a beautiful place to walk! But in Summer it's too hot! More than 35 degrees Celsius. Last time I was there in April 12, 2017 the temperature was 31,5 degrees Celsius... I need to drink some water!

We were centred at Mértola,, a lovely town with ancient castle with it's original history dating back to 314 BC, churches through the ages, many hills and walks and we'll tended islands and flowers. Running alongside town is the beautiful Guadiana River, with kayaking and boat trips and a couple of excellent hotels overlooking it.

Azenhas do Guadiana

Azenhas do Guadiana, located along the river Guadiana, was historically home to water mills that harnessed the river's power for grinding grain. Today, these mills have been repurposed into leisure venues. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities such as swimming in the warm waters against the tide or simply relaxing by the riverside. The area offers picturesque views and is ideal for picnics with its ample seating and barbecue spots.
Beautiful place for picnic or just to enjoy nature. There is tables and it is super nice.

If you want natural beauty give it a shot. It has amazing location and is rich in life. It's an awsome place to take your dog to walk. It is not a good place to swim or spend a full day though. The water is muddy and has a strong current. Also the passage gets flooded 2 times a day.

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is a historic church located below the Moorish walls. It was originally a mosque built in the 12th century and later consecrated as a church dedicated to St. Mary.
A truly wonderful history of this church.

Actually we navigated to the national park but ended up in the middle of nowhere. So we drove and drove and ended up in Mertóla. We viewd this beautiful Church which was a Moskee long time ago. Not sure what happend in history but still very beautiful. The Church is closed between 12.30 - 14.00..

Interesting history of a search and a mosque! Friendly staff
Antonieta L — Google review
I saw it from the outside only but I think it is a right piece of architecture at a right size in the right place. Not too large, snow white, not too many additions to the main body but one cannot say it is a simple cuboid. Now that I know how it looks inside I consider it a huge mistake to skip it.

(Translated by Google) Coming to Mértola and not seeing the old Mosque (Main Church) is to miss one of its most emblematic architectural works. There's no place where you can't see it, and feel the call to visit. It's located high up, next to the Castle. Inside, the original altarpiece, a mihrab, stands out, oriented southeast, toward Mecca, as is traditional in Islamic architecture. Each column has a unique, intricately carved capital that deserves careful attention. The ceiling is stunning with its Gothic arches, contrasting with the white and carved stone. What a marvel!

The Castle of Mértola is a medieval fortress that stands proudly atop a hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. While not the most aesthetically pleasing castle, it is the focal point of Mértola and well worth the trek to reach it. From the river, the town presents a picturesque scene with its stone walls and whitewashed houses culminating in this sturdy stone castle. Visitors can explore this historic site free of charge and soak in its ancient ambiance.
Great to walk about, we got in free, not sure if there is a ticket price A walk up the tower is a must, great view of the city Free public toilets outside and remains of a roman house

Absolutely stunning!!! From a distance we sit and stare at the castle, but to walk up and around inside gives you a whole other perspective. Stunning scenic outlook being so up high, from all angles and so much history to absorb. Highly recommend! We loved it and are so glad we came to stay and experience the beautiful hillside town of Mertola in South Portugal.

Castle of Mértola Type: castle Current price: free WC: located outside of the castle Path for disabled: not available Parking: available, small Bike parking: not available Public transport: Redexpressos bus, Rodoviária do Alentejo bus + 15 min walk Medieval castle built during the Islamic period. It was particularly rebuilt after the Reconquista, so the architecture is a combination of different styles. Next to it are more ancient ruins. Also, within the tower is a small museum with medieval items.

If you happen to be passing through then it is a worth a wander round the castle. As the views are good, looking in both directions along the Guadiana river and the town. Although it's not as spectacular as the castle at Beja.

Really enjoyed our visit. The town is fabulous around the castle with cobbled streets and picturesque buildings. It is a bit of a climb to the castle but not too bad. Once there, there is an excavation underway of roman ruins around the castle which is very interesting with plenty of view points. The castle offers fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. We visited in November and it was free.

We stumped up on this little beautiful peaceful well maintained town on the way from Spain to Lisbon. The castle is so well maintained with all renovated levels that have wooden and marble stairs and museum floors with a local staff who was extremely nice and knowledgeable to tell us about the town. Everyone who worked here was so nice, proud and educated of their own town. The entry fee is FREE. I'm super impressed with how they very well managed to maintain their history, the whole neighborhood and castle. So much respect for these people and this town. The whole atmosphere is so peaceful and relaxing. We also stopped by a restaurant down the tiny street and the food was so delicious and healthy. Highly recommended!

Loved the concept of this little restaurant so much! Healthy, sustainable food with so much flavour. Super friendly staff, and beautiful atmosphere. One of my favourite meals of 2024, let alone my trip across southern Portugal! Definitely go if in Mértola.

Overlooking the beautiful river, the scenery is magnificent. This is the Islamic festival so the menu is special North African and the food is delicious. What a beautiful experience for lunch in May. Another great discovery to come back to visit again. The waiter spoke French so this made it easy for us as we are French/English speakers with very little Portuguese.

One of those places that are very simple to rate, 5 stars all around. We had two dishes to choose from, one is vegan and then you have a menu to choose from of appetizers/tapas traditional from Alentejo and some northern African influence. The interior space is artsy and of very good taste. The service is friendly and attentive. All round a huge recommendation from me.

So far this is the place where I had the best food since I'm traveling in Portland. Really, we were 3 persons, and everything we ordered was outstanding. Can't be happier. We arrived here totally casually, stopping by this little town on our way down south and found this place walking around, and now I wish I was staying more time to enjoy more of their menu. Highly recommended if your a foodie

After visiting the castle, we stopped by to have lunch here. All the food we ordered was so freshly homemade and delicious. I had the best organic craft SODA here. The view of the rooftop was so peaceful and beautiful. We had the best and relaxing afternoon of our entire trip here. This little town is super pretty and has really good food. I wish we would have stayed here on this trip but we didn't plan it. Well... Next time!!

So delicious foods that we just had to go back to the place for second time after visiting the castle. Superior service. Got to know so much about the food they are offering, the restaurant, history of surrounding area and nature. Besides restaurant they also have a shop there and from last Friday they have taken the town's only bar responsibility. So one could enjoy drinks longer. Monday is their day off. On Tuesday and Wednesday they fill in duties of association that is about how to handle the dry climate better. Historic atmosphere and a terrace with a lovely view. Located in old town area, where visitor vehicles are prohibited. It's just a small walk from nearest parking spots.

I ordered the black pork. It was so good that I ordered a second plate. The temperature in the room was low. I asked the waiter twice if he could light the fireplace for us.( we had a table close) The fire went out after 15 minutes each time , probably because there was no air hole. I had to wear a jacket during the meal. Anyway we still had a wonderful time!

Restaurante O Brasileiro is a popular dining spot in Mertola, Portugal, known for its excellent traditional Portuguese food. The restaurant is recommended for a visit before 13h to avoid crowds and experience friendly staff and prompt service. The wide Boar stew is highly praised and worth the trip. Despite potential crowding after 13h, the food remains good and well-served. The restaurant's location near Guadiana Valley Natural Park makes it convenient for visitors exploring the area.
I come here to visit Mertola and have the wide Boar stew at this place, well worth the 4hr round trip

If you want a good experience, better go before 13h, after this is crowded, staff aren't friendly, and food is delayed. At least the food is good and well served! You can eat 2 persons with one plate
Arthur M — Google review
Excellent traditional Portuguese food, good service
João R — Google review
Food is not even OK. Barely warm. You can hear the microwave go "ding !" in the kitchen next door... But the worst is definitely the service. This woman is horrendous. Not one smile, no hello, no thank you, no goodbye. Unbelievable. It's probably the worst dining experience in Portugal ever.
Nadege B — Google review
Excellent food, professional service, just be sure you follow Portuguese habits! This place might be for something special! There is no cheap open wine. I was told they have also jarro but pretend not to offer as they want to sell their bottles (Spanish style bottled wine is more elegant???): the bottle here starts 9-11€ raises easily up to 50 for a special one. Prices for soft drinks haven't been disclosed on the menu. Also many other dishes they do offer but don't mention them on the official menu. You need to speak Portuguese to order them - and you need to know how Portuguese eat their dinners: they share one portion ("uma dose") We ordered "uma dose" of a grilled meat which was top notch incl. French fries, rice and salad (this is always included in Portugal) 14€. However they tried to charge us "uma dose" plus "meia dose" (1/2) which I think it's unacceptable and which leads to the fact to evaluate 3/5 only!! I tend to recommend this place but I don't support their f. K. tourist attitude...
Joe K — Google review
The Food is good. Great landscape view. Unfortunately the service is not so good. I have been there two times and I sufered the same problem, too long wait to order and to get the food.

Great place for afternoons "minis"! Grab one and seat outside lazily. Perfect for your Summer dinners: the owner will obnoxiously talk you into having exactly what he thinks you should have :D Which means the best food available with the most suitable wine. You'll love it!

The food was not good enough for its price. Typical turistic restaurant where you pay but don't enjoy. I would have prefer to have eaten a piece of bread. The best was the beer. Pa los españoles, buscad otro sitio, que a poco encontraréis algo mejor.

Asier G — Google review
Food is under average for the region and prices extremely high.(10/12,50 euros for main dish). We have been charged 5 euros for a side salad (oignon, tomato, salad) and 6 euros for a"tapas mistas" (3 small pieces of ham and 3 slices of chorizo )that we had NEVER ordered. Bad price/ quality ratio. Service is fast ... but rude. This is the first time we experience such a disappointment in Alentejo.
Mylene M — Google review
The place and the food are good and the service was fast. The owner will pretend that there’s a malfunction with debit and credit card payments so you can only pay in cash.

Food was not excellent, but i was disappointed with other things as well. The olive was cheap and i found some bitter and damaged. The salad of lettuce and onion had a wild local herb in it but not well washed, so I bit a tiny stone and it discussed me. The dish was fevas com choriço, and i think this dish based on very cheap ingredients that it has must not be 9 euros. I give 3 of 10 to dessert based on my experience in many other restaurant Alentejo that I've been.

Bodies of Water
Pulo do Lobo, also known as Jump of the Wolf, is a popular tourist spot located approximately 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Mertola. It is renowned for being one of the most striking sections along the Guadiana River. Legend has it that the narrow stretch got its name because a wolf could leap across it in a single bound. The waterfall itself is quite dramatic, with the waters of the river cascading through a rocky gorge.
We took the east side trail. Coming from the town of Serpa going south on route N265. At Vale the Poco where Agostinho restaurant is located we turned right (west) following the Pulo the Lobo signs that lead you to a parking lot overlooking the Guadiana river. There is a nice wooden terrace there with picnic tables From there there is a nice wooden built trail that takes you down and south and north few hundred meters in each direction. There is a views are amazing. You can get off the wooden built trail and go down all the way to the river bank and the actual Pulo the Lobo Highly Recommended

Pulo do Lobo (wolf’s Leap) is a beautiful water fall, surrounded by rocks. It is the highest waterfall in southern Portugal. Accessible by car to view a one of the point of waterfall.
S G — Google review
Wild extremely special waterfall. The huge river flowing threw narrow rocks, the sound of water is deafening and it looks like a moon landscape. You can find beautiful stones here. Not for the fainthearted.
Monica C — Google review
Nestled in the heart of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, Pulo do Lobo (literally “Wolf’s Leap”) is one of Portugal’s most dramatic and captivating natural landmarks. Located in the Alentejo region near Mértola, this narrow gorge of the Guadiana River offers a breathtaking display of raw, untamed beauty. Nature at Its Wildest Pulo do Lobo gets its name from a local legend — it was said that only a wolf could leap across the sheer, rocky chasm. When you stand at the edge of the viewpoint, it's easy to see why. The river rushes through a narrow gorge carved into ancient schist rock, creating thunderous rapids and swirling currents. During the rainy season, the spectacle is especially powerful, as the water surges with dramatic force. Scenic Views & Hiking While the waterfall itself is the main attraction, the surrounding area offers scenic hiking trails through cork oak forests and Mediterranean scrubland. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will appreciate the rich biodiversity, including rare birds of prey and wildflowers. The trails are not too demanding, but proper footwear is advisable due to rocky paths and occasional steep sections. Remote and Peaceful Part of what makes Pulo do Lobo special is its relative remoteness. Don’t expect large crowds, souvenir stands, or commercial facilities. This is a place for quiet reflection and awe. There are a few viewpoints, some with wooden railings and signs in Portuguese and English, but overall, it’s wonderfully unspoiled. Tips for Visitors Access: Best reached by car; the final stretch is on a dirt road. Time of Year: Visit in spring or after rains for the most impressive water flow. What to Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy shoes, and a camera — the light around sunset is magical. Final Verdict Pulo do Lobo is not just a stop on a tourist map — it’s a raw encounter with nature's force and beauty. It’s ideal for travelers who appreciate rugged landscapes, tranquility, and a touch of legend. Whether you’re a photographer, hiker, or just someone seeking a moment of awe, this hidden gem of Alentejo will leave a lasting impression.

Well worth the drive. Start early, it gets hot quickly & wear good footgear. We took a picnic to enjoy there. Please please take your rubbish back with you. We were so disappointed to see the carelessness of visitors before us.

We drove from the West. Quite a long drive along bumpy narrow roads eventually leading to a dirt track for the last 1.5km. Google tries to take you off road but follow the signposts through the village instead. The rock formations are interesting but quite honestly not worth the trip. There is a footpath along the west but on the east side there are boardwalks. No toilet facilities. The water looked polluted with scum and foam. So many nicer places to go to so I don't recommend this one unless you happen to be nearby.
Londoncoffeeaddict — Google review
This is far better in person than it is in pics. The gorge is other-worldly and I have seen no other place like it. However, other than a few tiny spots, there are no beach or swim areas here and accessing the river is somewhat difficult, except for a tiny unmarked path past the 'merendas' area. Even this is difficult. NOT for children to play or bath in. To reach the access, do not follow trail markings once you pass the gate. I did and it just took me in circles once I passed the dry brook. Better to drive past the gate (close behind you) and just drive down the well kept gravel road till the end. The other side you see marked on Google maps is a "Pesadiços" boardwalk that is quite extensive, but has no access to the river edge.

The Basílica Paleocristã - Museu de Mértola Cláudio Torres may seem like an ordinary building from the outside, but it houses a well-preserved ancient church and a collection of materials from excavations. The museum contains funerary stelae with partially transcribed captions, and the staff provides thorough explanations of the historical context. It also features an exceptional collection of Early-Christian inscriptions. Visitors appreciate the well-documented displays and helpful staff.
I was very surprised at what was available here to view (for free too) and hpw organized and well developed this area was. When visiting, dont moss the cistern.

Terra Utópica offers a stunning view of the town and river from its terrace, although it can get quite hot during summer lunch hours. The service, while a bit slow, is delivered by friendly and efficient staff. The menu features delicious starters like big toast with sliced tomatoes and bacon, followed by main courses such as jambalaya rice and cod with potatoes. The food is described as very tasty, served in an atmospheric setting with pleasant and attentive service.

The place has a beautiful view of the town and river from the terrace. Forget about the terrace for lunch in summer as it is extremely hot in there. The service was a little slow but the waitress was nice and efficient. I tried a big toast with sliced tomatoes and bacon for starters which was delicious. Jambalaya rice, the main course, was correct. My wife tried the cod with potatoes, delicious. The interior of the restaurant was comfortable and it helped creating the proper mood for a great occasion. I would say that the place is much better at night in summer.

Excellent food and service. A lot of attention to detail in the presentation of these delicious meals. This is a small family owned and operated food. The view over the Guadiana river is amazing, the atmosphere is calm and matching the scenery. We all loved it and we have very high standards for food quality. Great costumer service too. These people love their work and making costumers satisfied. We will come back again tomorrow for our last dinner on Mértola. Highly recommend this gem in the beautiful historic town of mertola, 10 stars!

Not bad! We stopped in for lunch and had the javali, the bochechas(pork cheek). Many of the previous reviews spoke about long waiting to get food, we waited less than 30 minutes in a full restaurant where we arrived last. The food average, price wasn't bad. It just seemed more for the visitor than for the local. One bonus is that the menu has pictures that show the dishes

Cosy restaurant with a nice terrace and a beautiful view on the river. We had a refreshing gazpacho with fried sardines - it was really delicious and exactly what you need with the heat here. The staff doesn't really speak English but they understand enough to get you what you need and are very friendly.

Friendly service, but unfortunately not in English. Everything very over salted. My dish consisted of all parts of pork 🐖 with various bones, skin and fat parts, that I could not really identify. The main feature of my dish was a puree from scraps of bread 🍞 and some other unspecified things. It was very salty and basically horrible. I have to warn you however that it may be the best restaurant in town, since I've tried Portuguese Cusine in different parts of the country with no success. Just stick with other options for your own health & safety

Tamuje is a restaurant located in Mertola that offers a variety of typical regional dishes. Some of the house specialties include tomato soup, river shark soup, codfish bread soup, Alentejo migas with black pork feathers, and wild boar. For dessert, they recommend the lemon meringue pie and sericaia accompanied by Mertola's honey water instead of Elvas plums.
My friend and I had a great time dinning here. It was definitely a highlight of our trip! We stopped by for lunch because we wanted to try some traditional Portuguese food. We had one of the outdoor seatings and the view is magnificent. We tried the grilled fish from menu of the day, had a vegetable soup, and a traditional soup served with bread, fried pork and potatoes. Also my friend was craving for grilled mushroom, even though it’s not on the menu, they made us some! All food is so delicious and the portions are big! But we finished everything because they are just too good! The service is also great. The owner and his nephew gave us a warm welcome, explained questions we had about the menu patiently, and served our food with a smile on their face the whole time. The kindness they shared with us made our hearts sing and felt so welcomed in this foreign country. Thank you so much! We will definitely visit this restaurant again!!

Great restaurant amazing ambiance, we were lucky to have a group of Alentejanos singers visiting the restaurant and performing a couple of typical song from the Alentejo region We wanted to order from the menu but went for the chef suggestions instead, and for a superb Mértola wine, and what a winner this was!! Obviously you have the views of the Guadiana river that makes up for a perfect setting.. Not to be missed.
Emmanuel L — Google review
Let's be honest, alentejo food can be salty. Flavors are the main features here, not salt! The staff was so nice, the wine list is local/regional and fantastic, the decor is vintage and vibrant, but the food is excellent!
Kelly J — Google review
An amazing restaurant in a very picturesque village. The tomato soup and the venison are heavenly. The cod / coriander soup was very nice but I hate coriander so I didn't eat much. The selection of wine is wide and those we tasted were very delicious. A must-visit.

Once upon a time ..... This could be the start of a beautiful story, and we are fortunate to have gems like this place I don't know if Michelin guide knows about this place, but it's about time that someone gives them, the credit they deserve The place is formidable, with vintage stuff on the entrance and spreaded across the room Yes, the waiting time can be daunting But when the food arrives it's from another world, and makes you forget the waiting From the bread and olives To the grilled cheese with tomato jam The meat, namely the tournedo is awesome and the regional dishes are perfect You get a modern touch, but respecting the original recipes Service is out of bounds Did I tell you already that the food is incredible? This a gem, and needs to preserved like this Not to fast, like in Alentejo, but with everything on the right place Well done boys
Helder C — Google review
The food was really nice, but the service was nowhere near the same standards, unfortunately: we waited for half an hour before ordering, to then find out that all the day's special main courses were not available anymore. When the food arrived it turned out that the waiter had written down the wrong dish
Pieter D — Google review
Excellent food, excellent service. Try the grilled cheese, and don't miss the tomato soup. We had venison, wild boar, and a matured angus steak, all well prepared and served. Well accompanied by a local red called Balanches. Modern comfortable space. Superb meal! Make sure you have a reservation.

Wow what a delightful place to stay and eat! We stayed in the boutique guest rooms overlooking the pool, river and castle…it was so stunning and relaxing. Good little restaurant on the opposite side of the Guadiana river, in Mertola serving traditional, seasonal fare. The pheasant starter was tart (pickled vegetables) and tasty, and the garlic bread accompanying it garlicky and delicious. Pork cheeks and lamb chop mains were good, but the winner was the dessert. Tasted like honey and walnuts (cake base), topped with meringue. Can someone tell me what its called?
