Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Perched on a mountaintop in the Alentejo region of Portugal, Monsaraz Castle offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its 14th-century construction. The castle boasts panoramic views of the surrounding valley, including Lake Alqueva and the picturesque Alentejo countryside dotted with olive groves and vineyards.
I was expecting something good, but it was unexpectedly superb! Amazing views from all the Alentejo Valle, a cozy historical village and a surprisingly well preserved castle in between. Not to mention the delicious traditional Portuguese food and drink and their unmatched hospitality. Definitely coming back for more.

Visited end of May, still very quiet. The church and the chapel (opposite the church) are beautiful. Great views of the Alentejo and the Alqueva reservoir.
Gert S — Google review
Lovely old castle well worth the visit. Kept in it's original form so narrow steps and walkways. Not covered in safety barriers so you explore at your own risk. Beautiful village too with little cafes and gift shops.
Alan B — Google review
This castle is really worth a visit. Great lake views, interesting history and architecture. Nearby, a beautiful street with cafés and shops selling local products.
Amit M — Google review
Beautiful castle with a great church inside. Nice pottery shop inside. Free camper parking super close.

A must see. A beautiful small village nestled inside a castle wall. Once you walk to the tower and climb the metal stairs it is amazing to see
Helen C — Google review
Beautiful castle. Like old town Evora without the masses of tourists. Every nook and cranny was interesting to see. Think of this as a museum not a city, very few shops/ places to eat.

A beautiful small town of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets on the top of a hill with great views over the surrounding countryside.

Restaurant
Sabores de Monsaraz is a charming restaurant located in the picturesque village of Monsaraz, nestled in the heartland of Alentejo, Portugal. The restaurant offers a no-frills dining experience with a focus on pork dishes, particularly porco preto from black pigs fed on acorns. Visitors can enjoy incredible views while savoring the tender and flavorful Porco Preto, as well as other daily dishes cooked to perfection.
Stepping into the grandmother's restaurant with amazing views of the valley below, you know you came to the right place for a good meal in an authentic Portuguese environment. We all wanted pork cheeks and were served family style of the best pork cheeks I've had in the Iberian countries. The rice was also the best with herbs and crunchy nuts. We told them we only had 40 minutes to eat and they were happy to serve us quickly.
Annette M — Google review
We arrived about 1pm without a reservation. The door was closed so we turned to leave only to have the door opened with a lovely welcome by Isabel herself. We had a simply amazing experience here - the view is spectacular, the food is the best we have eaten since living in Portugal for four months. The Porco Preto was so tender and flavorful. There is no menu just two daily dishes cooked to perfection. Select your wine and desert in the kitchen. We were lucky to visit in the off season without a reservation. Walk off lunch with a wander around the beautiful Monsarez. Cash only establishment, there is a Multibanco in town. Muito obrigada Isabel 😊
Kate L — Google review
We had booked for lunch for 4 adults and 4 small kids. The place really is in a spectacular location, food was excellent, the owner more or less decides what you are going to eat but she is right, the kids loved the bacalhau and for us migas de bacalhau and bochecas de porco were really well cooked. This restaurant is worth a visit if you are in the area but I advise reservation. Good selection of regional wines and desserts are good but too much after all this food 😀
Helene D — Google review
It's the latter part of my trip in December 2018. When I first visited, I was full of people, and when I went into the store to see if I could wait, both of my grandmothers didn't even say hello or care, and I was at a loss what to do. When I left the store, a customer came out and told me that they couldn't speak English, so I was told to wait for a while as his meal was over. After that, the guests didn't talk to us for a few more minutes, so they said they were good and delicious. I barely sat down and ordered a menu order with a photo from Google. Because English is not working, I only communicated with body language and another customer who speaks Portuguese helped me when I ordered wine. Many later reviews say the service is bad, but we know what it's like from that experience, but she was kind when we sat down. And thank you for coming forward and helping out like my job. Thanks to them, we had a delicious meal. It's really memorable.

I really enjoyed the dinner here. Yes, the service was a little gruff but that is something I experienced quite often and it did not deter us from having a good time. The food was very good and portions are huge. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Falco C — Google review
Dona Isabel manages the whole thing and we were received almost like family. The food was delicious. We never got to see the menu but portions are around 15€.
João R — Google review
Authentic Portuguese restaurant run by two sisters. The food was delicious and served promptly with warmth and kindness. I made a booking on their website using the form the day before our visit and received a reply within hours. Before we had sat at our table there were a few dishes of starters on it; mozzarella salad, cheese, olives and bread, and black sausage slices. As per usual Portuguese restaurants these are not complimentary so we chose the bread and olives and the mozzarella salad. A lovely cold bottle of white wine was served within minutes too. The menu was simple with just two options of meat (lamb with potatoes and pork with onions) and a couple of codfish choices. We chose one portion of the pork with onions and rice to share between my husband and I. The rice was special with coriander and nuts and garlic oil. So tasty. My husband and I don't generally eat large portions so to share one between us was plenty. The cakes and desserts were homemade too and delicious. A lovely meal and restaurant. Highly recommended!
Evelyn D — Google review
The host Isabel who is also the cook did a fantastic job of introducing us to altenjo cuisine. The black pork cheeks and the lamb dishes we were served were one of the most succulent meat dishes we’ve ever tasted. Set in small house on top of a hill in the fortified village of monzaraz made the experience all the more authentic. The desserts we were served were mouth watering too. Served with some regional wine, the whole meal was taken to another Gastronomic level.

Restaurant
Taverna Os Templários is a charming restaurant in Monsaraz, Portugal, offering stunning views of the lake. The place is known for its tender roast lamb and attentive service. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and a lovely terrace with wonderful scenery. Additionally, Sabores de Monsaraz also provides great views, while Barrocal at the Sao Lourenco do Barrocal hotel offers fantastic meals just outside of town in the countryside.
Stellar views and wonderful food. Seems to get very busy so recommend booking in advance. If you want to take chances like we did you can join a wait-list on the day (we were lucky to get a terrace table after about a 45 min wait but I'm not sure that would happen every day)

The food is amazing. Had a Sopa de Cação that was very tasty and well made. The restaurant offers a balcony with a beautiful view as far as the eye can see. Greatly recommend having lunch here and then visit the castle where the restaurant is located. I also found the staff friendly.

We loved this place. There were seven of us on a bike trip and we were in Monsaraz for two nights. It has an outdoor patio with a spectacular view, food to match the view, and an excellent wait staff. We went back the next day for lunch and our experience was just as good. We would have eaten there a second night but our bike company had us booked at another place. If you are in Monsaraz, do yourself a favor - make a reservation. We spent 22 days in Portugal - this was one of our favorite restaurants.

OMG! The view from this medieval fortress to Spain across the water is so breathtaking you could eat an overdone hot dog on a dessicated bum and not complain. But the food is every bit as good as the view, including the best lamb ever and a delightful "salad of the land," accompanied by a smooth, full-bodied Monsaraz Reserve vino tinto. Sublime!
Douglas T — Google review
Best meal with a view! Food was a bit pricey here and took a bit long to come out but it was delicious and very generous portions. One portion was enough for two people. The view is unmatched to any other restaurant. Highly recommended the cod fish here.

We visited this beautiful restaurant on a busy Sunday afternoon. The views from the terrace are outstanding. Service was excellent, with friendly staff and head waiter who spoke excellent English. Our food was of a high standard, with good wine. I enjoyed the Roast Lamb whilst my husband enjoyed the Pig Cheeks. Thank you all for making our trip to Monsaraz so very special, would definitely recommend this superb restaurant.

Observatório do Lago Alqueva (OLA) is a must-visit destination for nature and astronomy enthusiasts. Located near the historic castle, it offers stunning views of Lago Alqueva, Europe's largest man-made lake. Visitors can take a refreshing swim at the beach, with lifeguards available in summer. The observatory provides an unforgettable stargazing experience free from light pollution, allowing guests to witness the Milky Way with their own eyes.
Really fun evening learning about stars and planets. Our guide was super knowledgeable and worked there part time, answered dozens of our questions, and ensured we had an amazing time.

We booked both Sun and Star observation sessions, which were instructed by Fred. His guided sessions were both informative and his sense of humor added to the enjoyment. Thanks for a fantastic experience, especially the sun gazing which was a first. We learned a lot and can definitely recommend doing both the Sun and Star observations while visiting Monsaraz.
Warren K — Google review
We booked the Meteor shower visit. The explanations were interesting and engaging, but honestly there are much better places to see the stars in Alentejo. There was too much light pollution around the Observatory, and i have seen many more falling stars elsewhere.
Ricardo C — Google review
Me and my wife had an amazing time stargazing and being taught and guided through it all with Fred. Very friendly, explicative and a one of kind experience. Super recommend!

110% recomondation! We saw Saturn 🪐 so close and all the different galaxies. Great tour and great explanation! We felt on a space trip!
Simon S — Google review
We booked the one and a half hour stargazing introduction. Fred our English speaking guide did a fantastic talk and showed us views of star clusters, planets and nebula through a large telescope. He answered many questions and was entertaining throughout. The views of Saturn and Jupiter were spectacular. Would recommend for anyone with an interest in the night sky as a beginner or keen amateur.

We enjoyed a very informative session with Fred and we learned so much about the stars and planets within our solar system. The facility is very good and the sky spectacular. Well worth booking a session and very reasonably priced.

Restaurant
Lumumba is one of the top dining establishments in Monsaraz, offering a delightful selection of Alentejo cuisine. The restaurant is known for its meat-heavy dishes, making it less ideal for vegetarians. A popular choice at Lumumba is the Bacalhau bras with salad, which not only tastes great but also comes at an affordable price compared to other places in Portugal. For dessert, patrons can indulge in the delicious pudin flan.
One of the best restaurants we regularly go to. Excellent traditional food, not mainstream stuff. Served by the coolest, funniest personnel. Breathtaking view. Going out for a meal doesn't get any better, unless you are a shrinking violet, in which case the coolness of the place might be too much for you. 6 stars.
Carlos M — Google review
Best soup I have had in two years in Portugal! Authentic home-cooked Portuguese and Alentejano dishes with a very local atmosphere and such reasonable prices. We four vegetarians were treated so kindly by the waiter who assembled a lovely tomato salad and served us eggs at no charge because he was out of the baked cod. A family run place that made us feel like family!
Annelie R — Google review
Down to earth basic food but absolutely delicious. The lamb stew and spear ribs was awesome. It’s simple but nice and cheap! Definitely worth the experience And a beautiful view if you can sit on the terrace!
Johan H — Google review
Recommended by the reception of the hotel, this place was little more than a hole in the wall with the usual modest furnishings of any old tasca, and very reasonable prices to match. But if you walk through all the way to the terrace, you would see a 180-degree panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and Alqueva from the heights of the castle of Monsaraz. The service was perfunctory from the good natured yet terse host, who presented the food and beverage with a silent flourish. He only broke the silence for a low aside about the couple next to us, who he said 'ate almost as fast as they left'. A slower pace of life is preferred in Alentejo. We ordered the roasted lamb with potatoes, with a generous accent of black pepper and coriander, which always takes on a much earthier tone when cooked. It was delightfully tender, fell off the bone, and utterly delicious. The local Monsaraz vinho tinto was a good match. (Unfortunately, the dish I had been wanting to order, carne de porco alentejano, was not available today, being Sunday when it was probably hard to get fresh clams. Respect). Dessert was pudim for me (exotic!) and vienetta for my wife (exotic, but in a different way). The relaxed vibe (and the wine) had the clientele relaxed and chatty, making small talk from table to table and getting up periodically to check out that view. What a pleasant find! Recommended by me!

We had the Bacalhau bras with salad, which was really good, abundant and cheap if you compare it with other places in Portugal. For dessert, we had the pudin flan. It was amazing! Excellent service, with a local atmosphere. We loved the place!

A ridiculous place which doesn’t even bother to serve its clientele during low season. We were alongside another couple waiting outside for ages. A Portuguese couple informed the servers we were there and they only opened the door two times only to shut it in our faces.

Stopped in for lunch here. The food was ok but the service was terrible. I was surprised the waitress didn't break the glass table top when she threw down our glasses and cans of sprite.

(Translated by Google) People were unhappy about working, and with only four customers, they didn't even bother to bring the coffees, saying, "The coffees are getting cold." I asked if the ATM worked, and they said yes, but when I went to pay, it didn't. I asked for a tax invoice, and after waiting 5 minutes, I had to give up because "they couldn't do it." The products on display were of poor quality, yet the prices were highly inflated and disproportionate. Definitely not to be repeated, and I don't recommend it.

Xarez is one of the best restaurants in Monsaraz, offering a meat-heavy Alentejo cuisine that may not be very vegetarian-friendly. The restaurant is known for its outdoor terrace overlooking the plain and is led by Salvador Finished. Visitors can enjoy delicious bread, olives, sheep's cheese, gazpacho soup, and refreshing salads. The menu features limited but perfect options such as octopus and stone steak. Guests recommend timing reservations for sunset to fully enjoy the experience.
Yes the views are spectacular but that’s not the only attraction of this amazingly located restaurante. Really friendly and welcoming manager and staff who gave us great advice on food and wine. And yes, the food was very tasty; we had goats cheese, tomato soup, black pork and bochechas. The Monte da Bonança wine was fantastic too.

Stunning views from this quaint restaurant, perfect for local cuisine and a light lunch after visiting the castle and seeing the Medieval town. The view is spectacular and the food good. Monsaraz is a little village on top of a rock overviewing a beautiful lake. I have been here 14 year ago and this place is so worth a visit. I ordered the pork. While in Alentejo stick with it. My hubby ordered fish and was not as luck as me.

Xerez Megalithic Enclosure is a fascinating historical site with a square stone circle and a center stone adorned with intriguing markings. Despite the lack of on-site information, the powerful yet tranquil atmosphere makes it worth visiting. The enclosure's relocation due to dam construction adds to its mystique, and while its history and religious significance remain unknown, it remains an interesting must-see destination for those intrigued by ancient mysteries.
Although the stones are not in their original home, having been moved when the local dam was built they are still powerful and yet quiet. It's a cool place.

Homenagem ao Cante Alentejano is a tribute to the traditional choral singing of Alentejo, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The monument, located near Monsaraz Castle, features a sculpture representing a choir and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can also explore the House of Cante de Telheiro to learn more about this cultural tradition. Additionally, there is a beautiful cromlech nearby that adds to the area's allure.
Very nice viewpoint over Alqueva with a very great monument in honor of Cante Alentajano.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Castelo de Mourão is a free-to-enter castle with parking just outside the main gate. Situated on a hilltop in picturesque countryside, the intact outer walls offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. While there are few buildings inside and climbing on the walls is prohibited, visitors can appreciate the castle's former glory and enjoy a 360-degree vision from within its walls. Despite signs of age, the breathtaking scenery makes it worth a visit.
An unforgettable sunset over Alqueva. Be aware that the castle needs urgent restoration.
Joana D — Google review
Although the outer walls and the entrance are in good condition, the rest of the castle is not. In fact, it is very deteriorated, and many areas (such as the towers, for example) are very dirty. Despite all this, the castle has a natural beauty that captivates visitors, and the surrounding landscapes are equally beautiful. I only regret the lack of care from those responsible for the castle. It is free to visit the castle. There is plenty of parking space next to it.
JP — Google review
Nice and calm. on Sundays you'll hear vibrant hymns being played across the area... Large carpark, access pretty good but a large wide motorhome might be a challenge
Jamie C — Google review
This castle is really gorgeous and you can see the beautiful landscape through it, but unfortunately it’s very degraded and abandoned which doesn’t make it less worthy to visit. The main problem is that there are some safety issues, for example, on the staircase, that I didn’t use, because some of the stairs were starting to fall apart, so I wasn’t able to see the top part of the castle and some of the views.
Margarida P — Google review
Beautiful place. Be careful to not fall from the edge of the wall ... There are a few places that are closed with tape because of the instability of the structure. You can see the whole Alqueva and take beautiful photos from the top. Unfortunately the church was closed so we couldn't visit .
Kykon T — Google review
The castle is free to enter and has parking just outside the main gate. It's a bit out of the way but you can see it on the hilltop for quite a distance and it is in very pretty countryside. The outer walls are intact and that's pretty much all there is. There are almost no buildings inside and you can't climb on the walls. There is no information other than a plaque by the church built into the walls. Good views though as you walk around.
Marcus H — Google review
When you enter here you can only imagine the glory of when it was in it's golden age. Beautiful space but sadly the signs of age are well noticed and their deserved so much more care and investment. None the less the landscape all around it's breathtaking and you can walk in the walls to have a 360 degree vision. It certainly deserves your visit.
Helder A — Google review
Beautiful place to look back over the Alqueva and over to Monsaraz. There's a tourism into totem that allows you to get your bearings amd read up on the local context. Mourao itself is unremarkable compared to other local towns but don't pass the castle by

Tapas bar
Centro Náutico de Monsaraz, a tapas bar with an intriguing name "lagartinhos de porco preto," offers deliciously tender grilled pork fillets, complemented by a mouthwatering marinade. This delightful dish is served alongside slim fries and a tangy fresh salad, accompanied by great fresh bread and butter. Patrons can enjoy this culinary experience while overlooking the serene waters of Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz.
Definitely an underrated restaurant. The food was delicious and the service fast. We went there twice and on the second there were a sunset party on the beach, staff was under a lot of pressure but still the food arrived fast and tasty.

I got the intriguingly named "lagartinhos de porco preto" (little lizards of pork) - deliciously tender grilled pork fillets, mouthwatering marinade, slim fries and a tangy fresh salad. Served with great fresh bread and butter. Washed down with a massive glass of local alentejo vinho branco for only €2. Overlooking the calm waters of the Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz. Everything was fantastic - they only lose a star for charging a euro per butter portion, another pet peeve of mine!

We had an excellent dinner starting the freshest oysters followed by mozambican shrimps a la guilho and ‘choco frito’ A real pleasure next to the water of Alqueva

Nope, don't come here! We ended up taking the risk because we wanted to stay some more time in the beach, but I feel robbed. We had the meat and vegetarian hamburger, but prices were very expensive and the food was bad. It honestly takes effort to have food this bad in this region. Staff not friendly either, it seems like they were making a favour to serve us. Not coming back!

Unspoilt natural environment, lovely clear water for swimming & sailing, , good facilities ie showers, toilets, bar, restaurant. Clean & tidy. Safe swimming areas, playground for children & kayak hire . Good for families & plenty of quiet walking, swimming & bird watching away from other people also.

Excellent food (try the octopus - amazing!) and service. Nice view of the beach and easy to reach to with nearby parking. The staff was very friendly, helpful and observant. You didn't have to wait at all to get their attention. Very professional! They made you feel like you were a guest and not just another customer!
Theodor — Google review
Nice place but can be very crowded. Ideal with children: beach! Large parking. Shower, toilets available. Rental of boats and water bikes. The small cafetaria is an other story all together. Staff is not very customer friendly. You can't order drinks only on the terrace but have to do this inside. They bring your drinks to the terrace though... Not allowed to use the toilet even when you are a customer. For Portugal rather expensive place. June 2019: new owners.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Sahida. Set in a 15th century building at the top of the quaint village of Monsaraz, this restaurant has friendly staff, delicious local cuisine and stunning scenery. We dined on the upstairs covered terrace which boasts mesmerizing views of the Monsaraz rooftops, Lake Alqueva and the surrounding Portuguese and Spanish countryside. They also have an indoor dining space adorned with decor, antiques and art that date back centuries. If you are visiting the Alentejo, don’t miss this gem of a restaurant. Restaurant
Restaurante SEM-FIM is a charming restaurant located in Monsaraz, housed in a former olive mill with an attached art gallery. The ambiance is beautiful and unique, featuring old machines and different levels. The food is fresh and delicious, with recommended dishes including bacalhau d'azeite alhado, arroz de Pato, caldo Verde, creme de legumes, and migas doces for dessert.
The setting is a former olive press, so it's interesting and charming, with a wonderful pastoral view from one side. Service and food were great. The menu changes daily and is limited, e.g. four entrees to choose from the day we were there. We had the black pork on skewers, the pork cheeks, and the octopus, all delicious. The chocolate mousse was exceptional and generous enough to share. The local wine they serve is excellent. I bought four bottles on my way home. Highly recommended.

Interesting place in old olive factory, amazing food, pulpo the best i have ever ate, great tomato soup, fresh ingredients and great white Sangria! 🩷💚 maybe pork was a bit too hard, but in general wonderful experience with Portugeese cusine with great localisation

Beautiful restaurant that adapted an old production site with tables both inside and outside but recommend staying inside for the scenery. The food is fantastic with a menu changing daily but always with great options. The tomato soup is fantastic and the bull stew was outstanding. The staff is efficient and nice. Reservations are recommended and credit card payments are possible.
Tomás F — Google review
While there was a limited choice on the menu, each of the dishes were full of flavour with generous portions. The staff were very attentive and courteous. The atmosphere was reminiscent of days gone by in the olive pressing warehouse. Table decor was colourful and felt very relaxing for a long lunch.

Excellent food! We had the black pig and grilled pork which was excellent. The restaurant shares the venue with an art gallery, which you can visit at the same time. They could not make baby/toddler-friendly food but allowed us to serve our own food for our child (note that they have dishes for larger children on the menu).
Malte — Google review
Beautiful location, great service and friendly staff. The food was good but could do with a little more variety, particularly on the vegetarian front (mostly veggie burgers available). But overall a fantastic evening.
Jason V — Google review
I'll start with the tomato soup because it was great. How it was brought out, not so much. When I order something at a restaurant, I like to get exactly what I ordered and how I ordered it. 2 soups were ordered and one bowl with 2 doses was brought out. 2 meat platters were ordered and one platter with 2 doses was brought out. If that's how you usually do it then ask if it's ok. Not ok with me. The outside seating area was nice but too many cobwebs and way too many bugs. Try to get a seat inside and definitely try the tomato soup. Separate bowls, please.
Paulo M — Google review
The food was good and tasty but unfortunately my service's expirience was horrible. After finishing the warm dishes, we had to wait for almost 50min. to get the deserts. All of this after several attempts to request the deserts. The waiters were pointing the responsibility for the table to the next one in a round. I end up being very disappointed with them especially because I was there with my 2 kids (6 and 8 years old respectively), and this situation not only stressed us directly as it led my youngster to get injured - after waiting so long he was trying to climb a stage next to our table as distraction and ended up bleeding. In parallel with all of this, I noticed the waiters were giving way more attention to foreigners... probably looking for a better tip... on my view this is also unfair and very disgusting as they make distinction between costumers - sort of a xenophobic attitude.

Nestled between the charming villages of Outeiro and Telheiro, the Menir da Bulhoa is a captivating Neolithic monument that dates back to an impressive 4000-2500 BCE. Rediscovered in 1970 after lying flat for years, this ancient megalith has been restored to its original form, though its fracture remains a testament to its storied past. During my bicycle tour of Portugal in November 2017, I was enchanted by this beautiful site.
Beautiful Menir... but be careful... it has magic properties! I was lucky to come away with my clothes still on!!
Man F — Google review
The menhir is thought to date back to between 4000 and 2500 BCE. Overlooked for a long time, it was identified in 1970. At that time it was lying flat on the ground, with the upper part separated from its base, which had been used in a nearby grape press. It was restored to its original shape soon after discovery, with the fracture remaining very noticeable.[1][3] It is situated on the road between the villages of Outeiro and Telheiro, on a flat area at the base of Monsaraz hill. The menhir is part of a megalithic nucleus that includes the menhirs of Monte da Ribeira and Outeiro and the Xerez Cromlech. It has a phallic appearance, being about four meters high and one meter in diameter. The stone is decorated with engravings depicting the sun's rays, a staff, and wavy and zigzagging lines. However, the fact that it lay on the ground for so long has contributed to the erosion of the carvings. It is not known whether the carvings date back to the menhir's origins or were added subsequently, although the motifs are similar to others found from the neolithic and chalcolithic eras.[2][3][4][5][6] from Wikipedia
Ingrid H — Google review
When visiting Monsaraz do go see this menhir. There is info available in English on a panel next to the parking place. Ancient fertility (?) stone with some concentric carvings on one side of the top half of the menhir. The bottom part is not original! In May with flowers abundant it is even more special. Parking place and menhir are accessible to wheelchairs. The path leading to the menhir is a little bit bumpy though. Update May 2018: the info panel is no longer present.

Nestled in the heart of Monsaraz, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa, also known as the Parish Church of Monsaraz, is a stunning example of Renaissance architecture. Constructed in the 16th century atop the remnants of a Gothic church lost to the black plague, this beautiful edifice features characteristic schist walls that are whitewashed to reflect Alentejo's intense summer heat.

(Translated by Google) Classicist church using abundant slate but also marble. In front a beautiful column carved in white marble. The interior draws attention for its almost neoclassicism, avoiding the Portuguese baroque and the typical blue tiles, although in the presbytery there are colored tiles. There is a large Nazarene carved in dark wood without polychrome, today its cross is broken. The façade of the temple is smooth, barely highlighted by vertical pilasters in the middle of the whiteness of the whitewashed walls except, on the outside, for the slate pilasters or the white marble pieces. Existe un gran nazareno tallado en madera oscura sin policromar hoy rota su cruz. Convento da Orada in Reguengos de Monsaraz is a former convent transformed into a luxury hotel. The hotel provides 23 guestrooms with a mix of historical ambiance and modern amenities.
This beautiful hotel is located in a renovated convent with lots of artwork, a small archeological museum, and charming spaces. The rooms were spacious, quiet, and comfortable, the bathroom large. It invites quiet contemplation in a retreat style setting. No TVs in the rooms, but there's a large TV in a common room. You must climb stairs unless there's an elevator hidden somewhere that I missed. The staff was friendly, helpful, and informative. Great breakfast. The restaurant wasn't open the day we stayed, but there were good choices nearby. It is situated in a small village but very near the old walled Castle Monsaraz, also a great place to explore.

The area's picturesque surroundings make it a must-see attraction for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Great place to visit at night with an open sky, i 100% get why these early humans built their hut here 10/10 anta, do bring a light if you’re going late we almost got lost

This was a very interesting anta (dolmen) to visit. The capstone was monstrous. A do not miss seeing in the area.

Easy to get to but the place is really not looked after.

Easy access a nice megalithic site. Love the atmosphere in the olive grove.

Pretty, beautiful landscape but hard to find (you have one sign that tells you the general direction but you have nothing to say that you arrived to the place. I end up passing it without noticing). More signs would be useful. The monument was used as toilet by some people. It does not smell bad tho.

Nestled in the charming locale of Monsaraz, Casa do Forno is a delightful culinary gem that beckons with its inviting terrace and tantalizing aromas wafting through the air. Initially, the sight of empty plastic tables might raise an eyebrow, but don’t let that deter you! This restaurant serves up generous portions of traditional Portuguese cuisine with a modern twist, making it perfect for sharing. The friendly staff adds to the warm atmosphere, ensuring a pleasant dining experience.
Found the existence of this restaurant by walking by the terrace and snelling the food. At first the empty (plastic) tables scared us a bit but very happy to have stayed because it’s a great place to eat the local kitchen. Portions are on the larger side and the waiter was really friendly! Go for the chocomousse to share as dessert! 🤤

The empty room scared us. But the good feeling made us stay. And we were rewarded for our faith. Delicious local food. And great portions too.

Had a wonderful dinner here. The portions are quite generous and the food is tasty! :) The staff was friendly and the restaurant has a terrace with a beautiful view although it was a bit chilly to eat outside.

Food is great, and quantities are huge! The terrace is really nice in the evening, one can actually see the sunset while having dinner. Staff super efficient and welcoming. Recommended!

Very nice restaurant with a comfortable traditional atmosphere. Dishes are typical with a slight contemporary touch. Prices of dishes are very moderate. Considerable are the size of the dishes, a plate serves easily for two, if you are not to hungry.
Soheyl S — Google review
They advertise really good traditional dishes but only serve normal average dishes. The service not good, they are pushing you to choose what they want. Don't recommend.

Bad service, rude waiters and raw food. Not worth the price. Don't eat here unless you're starving. The view in the garden is lovely.

My spouse and I spontaneously visited Foral MDXII, where we indulged in a refreshing glass of wine during the afternoon. After perusing the menu, we decided to make a dinner reservation for later that evening. To our delight, Chef Joao Pedro introduced himself and kindly took our order in advance. Seated near the kitchen, we were treated to an array of delectable local dishes selected by the chef himself.
What a wonderful experience! For starters we had garlic prawns and mushrooms followed by the Chef’s suggestion, block pork, which was exquisite. Service was very friendly and attentive too. Highly recommended.
Andrew S — Google review
Foral MDXII in Monsaraz offers a dining experience that's hard to beat, especially with its breathtaking view of the old town on the hill. We started with olives and local cheese, both of which were amazing. For the main course, the Iberico pork cheek with wine sauce and potato crisps was super juicy and tender. The chunk of veal with crisps and coleslaw was equally impressive. The local red wines, both the light and strong varieties, were delicious and paired perfectly with our meal. We ended with a warm, amazing brownie that we shared. The staff were great and mostly very proficient in English, adding to the enjoyable experience (€60). Highly recommend Foral MDXII for a memorable meal in Monsaraz!
Rob — Google review
My husband and I were just driving by and stopped in for a glass of wine in the afternoon. We looked at the menu and decided to book dinner that night there. Then, the chef, Joao Pedro, came and asked us what we wanted to order so he could have it ready. We ended up sitting at the table next to the kitchen and he brought out several samplings of his favorite and local dishes. It was AMAZING! The experience and food was one of a kind. They have a very nice selection of wine as well. We felt like family when we were there.
Jackie C — Google review
Best service and food around! When you need to go the extra step… they were way ahead! We were a group with vegetarians and vegans… they had nothing on there menu and they prepared a special menu for us! The food was heavenly… absolutely perfect! Congratulations!

100 Esquadria is a welcoming cafe/restaurant with incredibly friendly owners. While the pork dishes, such as beef alguidar and bitoque, may have been slightly dry, the real star of the show is their "house sweet." This delectable treat combines traditional candy with Maria biscuits, and adds a touch of egg candy without going overboard. It's an absolute delight!
Loved this place! Authentic Portuguese/Alentejo food (including massive portions and low prices) like one can't find in Lisbon anymore. The Migas com carne de porco were to die for; the cação was also great. Service was friendly and unfussy, the atmosphere very casual.

We went on a Monday, since many restaurants were closed. Service was really slow, there was only the owner serving. But he’s a very nice, gentle person. Food was ok. Barriga de alguidar: ok, good. But isn’t this a bit like “pica-pau” ? Migas com carne de porco: that was better. Price is ok. It’s not a place you make a trip to go. But you won’t be disappointed if you do go. Ah, um Comenda Grande tinto, sugestão do dono, por 15 eur. Excelente!

Although I couldn't capture any pictures while we were dining, Casa Modesta is a restaurant in Monsaraz that deserves a fair and commendable review. The amount of food provided for our party of five was plentiful, and despite not finishing all the meals, the quality remained undeniably good. However, it's worth noting that the service might not be as speedy as expected due to the kitchen's capacity limitations.
Excellent service! Really recommend this place. The food was good and very cheap. Don’t go if your are expecting a very elaborated menu.

Delicious hearty home-style cooking. I'm so glad we ignored the strangely low review score to give this a try. It's not fine dining, the name tells you that. It is really tasty traditional cuisine of generous proportions, with friendly service, in a simple, modest setting that will leave you feeling nicely full and glad you gave it a try. And you really should give it a try.

Stumbled on this little gem this afternoon while visiting Monsaraz. The owner was so nice as we didn’t have a booking but still gave us a table. The food was all local fabulous dishes and the house red was so nice too. Thank you for making our trip to Monsaraz so special.AND YES HE DOES TAKE VISA PAYMENTS !!

After a very rude experience with the templários restaurante, we stumbled upon this place. The owners are super friendly. The carne de porco à alentejana is to die for and the coffee flan has you beg for more. Reasonable prices and very good food. The owner could not be nicer! Great choice!
Lucinda C — Google review
I didn't get any photos here because we were eating, but the restaurant deserves a solid and fair review. For what we got in terms of food for a party of 5, it was ample. We didn't all finish our meals. The food is good if not quick coming out. Here, and in other parts of Portugal, the kitchens decide how much they can handle. This is one such place and there was at least one other restaurant in the Castelo that turned us away because they just didn't think they could have one more. My rating of this restaurant does not factor in a view or whether or not they take credit card or other factors that don't really account for how remote this location. You're in a remote 12th century hilltop fort built at the very start of Portuguese kingdom.

Excellent food, I really recommend the carne de porco Alentejano (Alentejo pork dish), this was absolutely tasty. And typical from this region. The owner makes all the deserts herself (we assume this is Modesta) and the chocolate mousse is to die for. Friendly staff as well. So 5 stars from us.

Nestled in the heart of the village, Taberna do Gato Preto is a charming eatery that captures the essence of traditional Alentejo cuisine. Guests rave about the homey flavors and impeccable service, making every meal feel special. The ambiance reflects classic styles, though some visitors have noted occasional distractions from cigarette smoke.
This restaurant was recommended by our hotel and close by. We all thoroughly enjoyed our choices: bull tail, black pork cheeks, and cod, prepared two ways. Staff was friendly; easy street parking.

What an absolute surprise!! We were recommended other places in the town but they all looked a bit gimmicky or soulless. What a surprise when you're taken to the back and it's cute Moorish detail. But my word, the food is what surprised us. We are foodies from London, that now live in Portugal and a little 'over' Portuguese food. But this blew our mind. The veggie soup, orange salad were incredible. And the lamb, possibly the best lamb stew we've ever had. And so much for 15 euros. Stunning food. It proves we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Staff are super sweet too! Thank you Gato Preto!

Nestled in the heart of a charming village, "O Convívio" is a delightful local restaurant that embodies the essence of Alentejo cuisine. With its rustic charm and warm atmosphere, this eatery welcomes you like an old friend from the moment you step inside. The menu features traditional dishes that are bursting with flavor, such as migas and tender pork neck cachaco, all expertly prepared by Mr. Joaquim, whose friendly demeanor adds to the inviting experience.
Very good local restaurant that makes you feel at home. It took some time to get around the menu but we managed it with internet so all good! And diner was delicious, along with a great wine selection. Highly recommended it for any person coming to visit Monsaraz and its surroundings. Of course it's not a fancy highly touristic place...but that's the point: you're in a local authentic village that serves authentic Alentejo and Portuguese food. All what you can expect from locals. Great Portuguese small town traditional food and service. Perfect place for a beer before dinner time and then stay for dinner 😊 Pork cheeks were as good as the smell that got my imagination going!! My husband’s pork Alentejo was delicious too. The wine recommendation paired beautifully with our meal, can’t say enough how good everything was. Then we ventured to have cheremboya( not sure spelling is correct) with ameixas de elvas… now that was something that we had never had and were so glad we did🥰 Love the place, can you tell!!

We had dinner in this spot and enjoyed being advised from the owner. We ordered a typical migas dish and some tender pork neck cachaço. Everything was really tasty, good portion in a typical Alentejo familiar setting. I don't understand why other reviewers felt the need to compar this to a high standard nd restaurant, when this area serves tasty, no frills food. Thus place fulfilled our expectations at a more than affordable price

I tell him that my friend has come from far away and would like to visit a place that is indicative of his culture and his people. The girl at the entrance replied, "...your friend isn't going to take me home." And she closed the door... This is how we destroy what so many have built... (Translated by Google) Very close to the Monsaraz castle we find this two-story building that, although according to tradition, played the role of the court of the Inquisition, it seems that it was nothing more than accommodation for a member of the Holy Office or temporary stay of accused before transferring them to Évora to be judged. Currently, an Interactive Center of Jewish History is located there in Monsaraz, a city where a prosperous Jewish community lived. On the ground floor we find two rooms about megalithism and the history of the city, while on the upper floor we find an audiovisual room and another where some information panels about the Inquisition in the area are displayed. The museum doesn't give much of itself; It is very small and there is practically not much to see, except for the information panels; In any case, it is interesting to know some details of this dark period in the area. Admission only costs €1 and is also joint with the very interesting Fresco Museum. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and from Friday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

History Museums
Museu Do Fresco, formerly known as Museu de Arte Sacra, is located in a Gothic building that once served as the base of the Inquisition and later a school. The museum houses a rare 14th-century fresco called 'O Bom e o Mau Juiz' depicting two justices - one good and one bad. It also displays religious art, vestments, and various historical exhibitions related to the area and nearby castle.
Small but very charming. Only one fresco. But beautiful pictures of the life in this region in ancient times. Very modern digital table where one may select topics, information, photos etc.

Capela Votiva São João Baptista, also known as Cuba, is a simple and unique chapel located outside the walls. It is one of the oldest monuments in the village and its origins are believed to be connected to the period when this region was under Muslim rule. The chapel offers a glimpse into the historical significance of the area and provides visitors with an opportunity to appreciate its cultural heritage.

O Gaspacho is a charming tapas bar located on the main street of Monsaraz. It offers a delightful selection of local meats, cheeses, and fantastic toasts, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a lighter meal accompanied by refreshing drinks. Visitors rave about the flavorful gazpacho, mozzarella and tomato toast, as well as sardines on toast with red pepper. The use of high-quality olive oil and generous amounts of garlic in the dishes adds to their deliciousness.
Everything was just amazing… The gaspacho was delicious, the toast with cheese, tomato and garlic was simple yet one of the most delicious things… The place is small, so make sure that if you see a table free, you take it! He makes most of the things from scratch, for example, the mozzarella.. just delicious and inviting… A cozy place with an inviting atmosphere.

Needed a quick bite on a hot day and this place delivered! Who knew Something as simple as cheese with honey and oregano on toast could be that sublime? Partner had their potato dish which was delicious and the tomatoes that were served with it were fresh with a little olive oil and oregano. I didn’t love the namesake cup of gaspacho, although that would have more to do with my wanting it to have more tomatoes and a dislike of too many raw onions. Would happily return!
