Located at the highest point of the city, Elvas Castle is an Islamic fortification, rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its current appearance is from the 16th century. The view here is quite breathtaking. This castle is one of UNESCO’s world heritage and it is situated in a high place where you can view the whole landscape, walk through the streets back to the square, see the Miradouro, get a glimpse of beautiful plants (I actually loved the way the locals use recycled plastics as flower vases) and I saw the biggest sunflower ever. I visited on a Monday and the castle was closed. Hopefully when you visit (don’t make it a Monday morning) you might be able to go up the castle and catch a glimpse of Spain from the viewpoints.

A small but charming castle with lovely views over Elvas and the surrounding landscape. It’s well preserved and makes for a pleasant short visit. A cute historic spot to explore and take photos.

The castle itself entrance was closed but that was okay I've seen many castles in Portugal ;). You're able to walk around the perimeter of the Castle with outstanding views.

Nice enough castle with good views across the countryside. Better views of the city and further afield from the Nossa Senhora fort. Only a couple of euros adult entry fee and free for over 65.

The food was good, but the service was extremely disappointing. It felt as if they were deliberately being rude. They were pushing things around and handing over food with their backs turned, almost like we weren’t there. It made me question if we had done something wrong to deserve such treatment.

A lovely find, looked closed but so we tried it The staff were welcoming and very helpful. We had the Piranha for 2 people, came with chips, rice, black beans and fried banana. We stopped at a town on our way to Lisbon, we were getting desperate looking for a place to eat and after parking up we asked a lady who pointed us to this place. Fantastic service, and the food was absolutely amazing. Language barrier not an issue, they spoke to me in Spanish and English, made me feel very embarrassed I hadn't learned any Portuguese!!

We arrived at a very busy period during Sunday lunch, but managed to get the last table. Waited a while for our food, but well worth it and all freshly cooked. Also gave us a chance to check out the amazing looking food brought out to other diners. Don't miss out on eating here, the tomato and egg soup starter is worth a visit on its own👍

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a former Cathedral of Elvas and was built in the first half of 16th century and lost its status as a cathedral in 1881. Its a Manueline style church but it lost its character during the years. Both side portal entrances are still clearly of Manueline style, and quite beautiful. Church inside is pretty simple, i loved the painted ceiling. The entire inside walls of the church are surrounded by polychrome tiles with lace and roses. Noteworthy is the huge organ in the upper choir. Worth to visit!

We had lunch in the gorgeous enclosed city of Elvas. The Viaducts were expectational to look at and the enclosed city was fairly lively with restaurants and places of interest to visit. The best part about the park is that it leads you to the UNESCO world heritage castle of Elvas, the museum which is just by the corner and the cathedral right at the south of the praça. And at the park tou get to see many exhibition of arts, goods and items that are traditional to Elvas. Most importantly you get a lot of option to choose what to eat from the many food vendors whose shops are situated around the park. Don’t forget to take a picture by the ❤️ELVAS structure as a reminder that you visited this beautiful town.

A very nice and big fortress next to Elvas. There are four predefined routes in the fortress marked by different colours, but you can also walk freely as you like. Especially a walk along the outer wall was amazing, as you can see and enjoy the whole area around.

The restaurant was near our hotel and, being tired and hungry, we were happy that they were able to accommodate us without a reservation on a Friday night. But when you tell me you will check the kitchen and completely ignore me for 15mins while walking past me 5 different times - well that’s interesting service. My parents / grandparents come from Elvas. So this is home to me. To be treated like I’m some non Spanish (yes I went there as I saw you treat Spanish people better) - well that is ignorant. By the way - Canadians (with Portuguese backgrounds because we of all people understand the struggle of our patriots ) would have tipped 20% - as we do back home. Perhaps next time - know your clientele. On my next visit to Elvas - avoiding this place based on service alone.

We had to wait 30 minutes for our restaurant nearby to open and feeling thirsty, a beer was in order! Fortunately, we found Onofre and we decided to sit inside, ordering two 33cl glasses of the standard draught beer, a size up from the Imperial. Not knowing what I had in my wallet to pay, I took all the coins out and headed to the counter with all my coins presented in my hand and asked to pay. How much? I was told 4 euros!! I never really argued it when really I normally would have done. We left the bar and I was trying to look for the price list of the drinks on the wall but never saw it. I felt rather annoyed having been taken for a tourist in all the bad sense of the word! I just felt more annoyed and robbed with a price that would have been more normal in Lisbon. We do live in Alentejo and we have never paid 2 euros for 33cl. That bar had nothing special at all, even less the decor. Speaking in English between us and showing a handful of coins was obviously license for the barman to charge me extra! Shame on him, I never thought I would have to now start thinking of such behaviour in a café in Portugal. We later stopped in another place for an afternoon beer and I asked the barman whether 4 euros was an OK price for what we had at Onofre, his reply was a grimace on his face and he told me that the barman was pushing it!

Large portions and amazingly good local cheese served with olives and bread as a free starter but the food quality was fairly average. My son had the house steak which was quite tough and we had to ask for a better knife to cut it with. The house chicken was good but no vegetables/salad to accompany it.
