Fortress
Perched atop a volcanic hill, Afyonkarahisar Castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. This 14th-century fortress has a rich history, having changed hands from the Hittites to the Ottoman Empire. Although only its walls remain today, it remains a significant landmark across from the Grand Mosque in the city center. The climb to reach the castle is steep and challenging, with around 550 to 701 steps depending on different accounts.
Such a great hiking experience, comfortable steps up to the mountain. In the mid of way there is a terrace with a beautiful view at the red roofs of houses and surrounded mountains however worth to go all the way up to get an outstanding 360 view from the top. Wouldn’t advise to climb on a raining day or after rain safety wise as it might be so slippery
Nadezhda D — Google review
Was a fun little hike up the stairs. Great city view. Had a lot of trash around which was sad. But worth it. Suggest going if you are in the area.
Ray F — Google review
This 3500 year+ national treasure is just left by itself… there isn’t even a rubbish bin which left the whole place covered in plastic bottles and trash… If there had been a simple cafeteria the revenue of which would clearly payout the cleaning up and maintaining from point on…Other than that, good for The Town to build comfortable stairs to the castle, however, if you want to climb the very last pitch leading to the very peak you need to climb the ancient stairs which are carved into the rock… wish the modern stairway led to the very peak. Overall this can be a great “fat burning” trip with your family..

Nice panoramic view. I’ll be back when the cable car is built. See you Eren :)

Perched high above the city, Afyonkarahisar Castle (Afyonkarahisar Kalesi) is one of the most iconic landmarks in central Turkey. Built on a steep volcanic rock over 1,000 feet above the city, the castle offers an unforgettable combination of history, breathtaking views, and physical challenge. The climb is not for the faint-hearted—there are over 700 steps to reach the top—but every step feels worth it once you see the panoramic landscape spreading endlessly in all directions. The castle has a long and fascinating history, dating back to the Hittites, and later used by the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. Each civilization left its mark, and while only fragments of walls and towers remain, the atmosphere is still powerful and moving. Standing on the summit, you can easily imagine the strategic importance this fortress once held. The name “Afyonkarahisar” itself means “Opium Black Fortress,” a nod to both the city’s historic poppy cultivation and the dramatic black volcanic rock beneath the structure. Visitors often come at sunset, when the golden light transforms the city and mountains into a magical scene. It’s also a deeply symbolic place for the locals, connected to the Zafer (Victory) celebrations of Turkey’s War of Independence. Afyonkarahisar Castle is not just a monument—it’s a journey through time, culture, and resilience.
Nikoloz N — Google review
I didn't visit the castle. It was hard to find the route up. Thought the city was very nice, especially the old buildings belom the castle.
Šimon P — Google review
Climbing to the top of the castle is very tiring but the view from the top is very beautiful and there is a tea seller and some snacks upstairs
Hajar A — Google review
The best view, but it’s necessary to renew top of the mountain. Around 550 steps and I reach the top of mountain just in 10 minutes

The Sultan Divani Mevlevihanesi Museum, established in the 13th century by Sultan Divani, is a significant Mevlevi lodge in Anatolia. It became a prominent center for Mevlevi orders and hosts various activities related to Mawlawiyya. Visitors can explore meditation cells and tombs of dervishes, as well as enjoy traditional Sufi music and detailed displays of daily Sufi life.
Free and informative, written in both Turkish and English. There were also QR codes linking to each description. Lovely traditional sufi music played and detailed wax figures of the daily sufi life was displayed. Unfortunately the information desk wasn't open so I couldn't get an audio guide but the descriptions seemed sufficient. Don't forget to check out the room with many ancient handwritten Qurans!

If you are interested in history then definitely go for a visit. It’s a small museum about the Mevlana people in Afyon and shows their lifestyle. The fee to visit the Mevlana’s house is 7.50tl. Nearby there’s also a Mevlana cami/mosque you can also visit. You can get an audio guide for a small payment.

Nestled at the foot of Karahisar Castle, the historic People's Bath is a hidden gem among the charming old houses of Afyon. Believed to have been constructed in the latter half of the 17th century, this stunning example of Ottoman architecture showcases intricate designs crafted by Armenian artisans. After falling into disrepair post-World War I, it has since been restored and transformed into a museum and cultural center that invites visitors to explore its rich history for free.

I think it was used for multiple purposes as a museum and exhibition hall. There was no attendant. Entry was free. Afyon Castle looked very beautiful from the balcony. At the entrance of the museum, there were decorations and mannequins belonging to the bath. He conveyed that atmosphere very well. A similar museum was also located in Gaziantep. The inside of the bath was surprisingly large. I would have been happier if it had written what those rooms were used for at that time. Because it was later converted into an exhibition hall. As far as I understand, there are materials for dressing and eating in a few of the rooms. It had a clean and spacious garden. I recommend you go and see it. Meanwhile, we met an old uncle visiting there. His mother bathed him in this bathhouse when he was very young. We had such a beautiful moment.. Honestly one of the most beautiful mosques I've ever visited in my life. From top to bottom you see wood, with beautiful carvings too. An ancient, natural feel lingers in the air, the history of worshippers coming and going is apparent. A set of creeky steps takes you to the women's section upstairs where light barely creeps through the gaps in the partition. Wudu area just outside the mosque is clean but no paper towels. A single plug socket at the front to charge your phone. Next time I will come with a better camera inshallah.

Mihrioglu Konagi, a charming mansion dating back to 1905, has been beautifully restored and now serves as a delightful venue for regional cuisine. Nestled away from the hustle of Istanbul, it offers a warm welcome that makes you feel more like an honored guest than just another customer. The menu features an array of traditional dishes such as Afyon tarhana soup, konak kebab, and eggplant moussaka.

(Translated by Google) Every bad experience turns into an experience in the end unfortunately there was nothing in the name of meat as seen in the pictures it was uncooked meat served with yesterday's fries and rice pilaf. I ordered tandoori soup as soup but they didn't even tell me whether it was available when serving and then tried to tell me it wasn't there while they were at the cash register. So long story short it's not a place to go, it's not worth the money unfortunately... (Original) Her kötü deneyim sonunda tecrübeye dönüşüyor malesef et namına hiç birşey yok resmen resimlerde görüldüğü gibi pişmemiş et ve yaninda dünden kalma kızartmalar ve pirinç pilavı ile servis edildi resmen çorba olarak tandır çorbası sipariş ettim ama servis açar iken olup olmadığı söylenmedi bile sonrasında da kasada kendileri düşerken anlatmak istediler olmadığını Yani uzun lafın kısası gidilecek yer değil verdiğiniz paraya değmiyor malesef....

Dishes include Afyon tarhana, Afyon keşkek, konak kebab, Afyon kebab, eggplant moussaka, eggplant börek, and göce köftesi. The place is beautiful inside and out. We ordered mantı (Turkish ravioli) and yaprak sarma (stuffed grape leaves). It was the first time I'd ever had mantı (Turkish ravioli) without minced meat. The vine leaves sarma were okay. The prices were reasonable for a place of this caliber. (Original) Mihrioğlu Konağı; 1905 yılında yapılmış, restore edilerek yöresel yemeklerin sunulduğu bir mekan haline getirilmiş. Biz mantı ve yaprak sarma sipariş ettik. Hayatımda ilk defa kıymasız mantı yedim. Yaprak sarma fena değildi. Fiyatlar bu ayar bir yer için makuldü.

(Translated by Google) We ordered breakfast. I can't remember ever having breakfast with such poor quality products anywhere in my life. From the jam to the honey, chocolate, and cheese, it was truly awful. The quality has dropped significantly. It wasn't like this before. This poor quality doesn't suit this mansion. I think it's changed hands. There's no other explanation. Absolutely don't come. I'm adding to the owner's response: the only thing left on the table was menemen, which consisted of potatoes and tomatoes, and half of that was eaten. Are you dreaming? Besides, your quality is already evident from your answers, so there's no need to say more. (Original) kahvaltı söyledik, hayatımda hiçbir yerde bu kadar kalitesiz ürünlerle kahvaltı ettiğimi hatırlamıyorum reçelinden balına çikolatasına peynirine gerçekten çok kötüydü kalite çok düşmüş eskiden böyle değildi bu konağa bu kalitesizlik yakışmıyor el değiştirmiş sanırımbaşka açıklaması olamaz kesinlikle gelmeyin, işletme cevabı üzerinede ekliyorum masada biten tek şey patates ve domatesten ibaret menemendi onunda yarısı yendi siz hayal mi görüyorsunuz acaba, ayrıca verdiğiniz cevaplardan zaten kaliteniz belli fazla söze gerek yok

(Translated by Google) The tandoori soup was good. The kebab was good, but I must have been expecting it because it didn't have the effect I was looking for, but I don't want to take it badly; it was just okay. Other than that, the atmosphere was nice, and the staff was very helpful. Thank you.

Afyonkarahisar Gastronomi Konağı is a charming restaurant located in a historic home at the foot of the castle. The tables are set up upstairs in different rooms, creating a unique and historic atmosphere. The decor adds to the overall ambiance, making it an inviting place to dine. Visitors have enjoyed various meat dishes and side salads, along with delightful desserts like cherry preserve cake topped with kaymak.
We were seeking a great local food place, and we saw signs along a back road near the castle telling us about this restaurant. We decided to try it. The restaurant is in a historic home, around 12 years old, at the foot of the castle. The tables are set up upstairs in the different rooms of the old house. The decor makes adds to the historic atmosphere. We all ordered 3 main meat dishes and added a side salad, with a cherry preserve type of cake dessert with kaymak on top (thick cream). The food was served in a good amount of time, piping hot and absolutely delicious. The serving staff were attentive and helpful. The prices are excellent (very affordable). We will definitely return here when we are in this area again.

I recommend Afyon kebab – it is very tasty. The place is really authentic. Unfortunately, the staff isn’t interested in clients, when I came for the first time, I haven’t found put if the place was working. So you should persist to eat here.

i went there 1 year ago, their beef tandoori and bread dessert were very delicious. you should try the bread dessert with kaymak because it's famous food of afyon and it's more delicious with kaymak.

Impossible to get your food as you ordered it. Prices are cheap because food is not good quality so do not get overwhelmed. There are better places in Afyon.

Kadaifçioğlu Restaurant is a delightful dining spot in Afyon, known for its inviting atmosphere and refreshing garden, especially during the summer months. While enjoying your meal under the shade of trees, be prepared for occasional leaves and dust to join your plate. The gentle breeze adds to the charm, and blankets are available if it gets chilly.
We tried traditional Turkish calf’s head and feet soup with yogurt and pita, it was delicious (yogurtlu kelle paca corbasi). I’d highly recommend it, as Afyon is the only place where you can find this variety.

One of the few places to have dinner with alcohol service in Afyon. In the summer the garden is so refreshing. But you have to be aware that, when you have a table under those lovely trees, there are many leaves and dust dropping in to your plate and glass. The breeze in the hot summer feels amazing, you can ask for a blanket if you feel cold. Prices were OK. Many selection of Rakı brands. Their liver is delicious and also very much recommended by the locals
