The Jane Austen House Museum is a well-maintained historic home where the renowned author spent her final eight years. Visitors can only view the interior on weekends from April onwards, but parking is readily available nearby. The house boasts a lovely exterior and features intricate details inside that offer an immersive glimpse into 19th-century English life. Its garden is replete with various flowers and plants, making it an excellent place to visit for those interested in history or horticulture.
As a dedicated fan of Jane Austen I have wanted to visit the Jane Austen house for quite some time. I was able to do so today and it was so wonderful. The staff are present to answer questions and are so helpful. They enjoy your own excitement. The home has been beautifully restored and includes so many items of Jane's. It was a joy to see the table where she wrote her novels. I leaned out the window that she probably leaned out of once upon a time. The grounds are lovely to explore as well. It was amazing to see first editions of all of her books!

Make sure you purchase tickets in advance, because each tour will sell out. Although the docents had us enter in small groups, I wish they kept the crowd flow moving through each room, as it grew very crowded within the rooms themselves. The exhibits are interesting, and it was nice being able to sit in the garden.

I don’t know where to start- am feeling both exhilaration and emotional after visiting Jane Austen’s house earlier today. So to start, absolutely make a booking! We saw folks being turned away or having to comeback like two hours later as slots were booked! It’s a small house and a lot to see / read/ experience and so can understand why the House limits the number of folks that can enter within a twenty minute time slot. Parking is also a bit hard and off-street was our only option. We spent over 3 hours enjoying the various rooms and exhibitions, listen to the audio first and then step into the house. Kudos to the volunteers who help preserve this history. The gardens are lovely as is the opportunity to dress up in period costumes. I feel drunk on happiness to have had the opportunity to visit!
Kanchan B — Google review
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a sensible traveller in possession of a free afternoon, must be in want of a visit to Jane Austen’s House. Whether one is drawn by the charm of literary devotion or merely in search of a respectable tea-room nearby, the cottage at Chawton cannot fail to supply both instruction and amusement. House and gardens, gift shop and toilets. Friendly and helpful volunteers working in the house. Dressing up optional. Tickets are limited so book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Nick — Google review
Much of how much you enjoy this museum will depend on your knowledge and appreciation of Jane Austen and her work but even as someone who has not read any of her novels I found the house to be an informative snapshot of her life and of the regency era in general and I commend the curators for their dedication to accurately depicting early 19th century life. Important things to note: the house (and therefore the museum) is small. The operators will only permit small groups (12 max) to enter in twenty minute slots. I highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
F S — Google review
A must see for every Jane Austen fan. The house gives such a good impression of how she lived and little details (like the mousseline dresses on the line outside), make it seem as if she just popped out for an errand. After the visit you can sit in the lovely garden.

Amazing private day tour with Phil Howe from Trip Advisor! Highly recommend this trusted, local guide. He shows you all the best off-the-beaten-path spots culminating in the museum tour. For the ultimate JA fans!

Very nice experience. A beautiful and moving experience. The house is so well preserved, and it truly feels like stepping into Jane Austen’s world. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly—highly recommend for any literature lover!

Chawton House is an Elizabethan manor and gardens that once belonged to Jane Austen's brother. The house has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, with connections to royalty and the Knight family. Jane Austen spent eight years living in Chawton, where she wrote some of her most famous novels. Visitors can explore the well-preserved house, which features good collections of paintings and underwent restoration in 2003.
What a lovely place ! Didn’t go in the house but the gardens are delightful, huge rolling lawns with expansive areas of woodland. There is a large walled garden with a herb section, orchard and a separate flower garden. It has a relaxing and quiet feel, not completely wild but allowed to grow without excessive interference by the gardeners (hope that doesn't offend them !) Benches appear wherever you may want to rest and appreciate the views and stumps mark the different zones as shown on the map ... picked up at the coffee and ticket kiosk. These marker stumps all have Jane Austen quotes from her letters and novels; a smile at every stop ! Coffee and cakes are served in the tearoom which is through a small but perfectly formed courtyard. Apparently, food other than cake is available for those who don't like cake (wierd, I know !). Be prepared to take photos, this is a particularly beautiful part of Hampshire.

Chawton House makes the perfect compliment to a visit to the Jane Austen House whilst in Chawton. An easy, pleasant 10 minute walk from the Jane Austen House, Chawton House helped provide a fuller glimpse of the life and times of the Austen family, and manor life. Upon entry to the house a generous gentleman provided an overview of the history of the house and its significant occupants, from construction through the ongoing restoration and upkeep process. He met us again in the library at the end of our walk through the house to provide even more information on the Chawton’s vast collection of valuable books. The house has an interesting interior and lovely walkable grounds with a variety of colorful plants and flowers blooming. The cafe is worth a stop with some nice treats and pleasant seating in the courtyard. Be sure to stop by the church on the walk toward the house, where Jane Austen’s mother and sister were both laid to rest.

Chawton House was a new discovery and we fell in love with its charm and beauty. It's easy to imagine Jane Austen promenading around the walks and parkland. Parking is easy - once you've found the car park and there are plenty of spaces.

Beautiful house related to Knight and Austen's family. Wonderful gardens too. The historical explanations by Peter Mayor was excellent! Totally recommend. Also the tea and scones was delicious.
Sekiguchi K — Google review
The last time I visited Chawton, this house wasn't open to the public. Now it is, and it's well worth the visit, especially if also visiting the Jane Austen House. A beautiful Elizabethan manor house, with fascinating interpretive material. The Cafe was also first class, I recommend the Chawton House cider! Very friendly, informative staff.
Claire — Google review
A beautiful old house including lots of Jane Austin's story. We were welcomed by a verywell informed guide, who also showed us the library. Pleasant gardens for a nice walk before a good cuppa in the tearoom.
Anna W — Google review
An unexpected gem as it 'suffers' from being near the more popular Jane Austen House. But it's just as important in telling her story. Home to a massive women's literature librays too, it's history is fascinating. It's a place also you could still imagine living in. We ran out if time, so likely to visit again. Worth the half mile walk between the two.

We spent an evening on Halloween which was truly unforgettable. It started off in the old kitchen with a delicious three course meal and welcome drink. We didnt see chef, but they deserve a pat on the back for the quality of the dishes. The two ladies that looked after us were wonderful,Kim was very helpful and knowledgeable. After supper we went into the hall for a candlelight ghost story, specially written and told by the author. It was so very special.

Bottom line up front... I'd recommend Kubo Kitchens and Russell. Overall, we're really pleased with our kitchen, utility and cloakroom spaces. The photos speak to the quality of finish. Note: there's one "before" and a few "after". Our project was pretty big and Russell was there with us every step of the way over quite a long period of time, bearing with us as we changed our minds and developed our design. He has a method of working that we get along with really well with various phases of his project plan that he'll take you through. We liked his proactive but not pushy approach, he'll get back to you when he says he will and is always open to contact. He'll listen to your requirements, throw out a few suggestions, solve problems and take you on your kitchen journey in a partnership to a design you'll end up loving. We completely gutted our old kitchen, utility and cloakroom, had a small amount of building work and a lot of plumbing and electrical work. Russell project managed all of the contractors for us, helping get through the inevitable tough times and organising everything to run pretty smoothly. We found the Kubo approach of helping customers with temporary mobile kitchen fittings (oven, hob, sink, etc) extremely useful to help get us through the project. Sure, there's a few things we could have improved or done differently but in a project this size we expected snags and these were dealt with very quickly and efficiently when they arose. Big thanks to Russell and the Kubo team, we're really pleased to have worked with you and become part of the Kubo family.

It was 30 years since we last had a new kitchen… and wow, how things have changed! We knew the elements that we wanted (clean modern lines, lots of big drawers, seamless worktops etc) – but we needed someone with flair and vision to pull it all together. Enter Russell at Kubo. He took our ideas, enhanced them, and made it all work within the space available. Talented designer. His virtual reality demo meant that we could walk around our new kitchen and try it out before committing. Once we confirmed, Kubo’s project management was great – the build started and finished on schedule, on budget, and the workmanship is exceptional. He works with a group of very talented tradesmen who were a pleasure to have around. The real test is now … a couple of months later. How do we feel every time we use the kitchen? A one word answer. Thrilled.

Highly recommend Kubo Kitchens. Russell and his team did an amazing job . The whole process from start to finish ran like clockwork. Russell did a fantastic job of designing our kitchen/diner to make the most out of the small space that we had. We have ended up with a beautiful kitchen that we love. I cannot thank him and all the other people involved enough.
Nicola D — Google review
I am absolutely delighted with my new kitchen! Russell was very helpful in the design phase and the VR tool made the plans come to life. It made it so much easier to get a feel for what the finished room would be like than simply looking at 2D drawings and screen shots. The team did a great job and I would have no hesitation in recommending Kubo Kitchens.
Jackie H — Google review
Having moved into a new house in 2021, we found Kubo Kitchens by chance on Google and contacted Russell to completely replace the old kitchen. This was our first ever kitchen so had no idea what to do, but Russell helped us design a kitchen which fit our needs and within our budget. Due to Covid and related supply chain issues, the work took longer than anticipated to finish, but the brilliant temporary kitchen provided by Russell ensured we weren't inconvenienced too badly. The completed kitchen met our expectations completely and the quality of work and professionalism from Russell and his team was excellent.
Maxim A — Google review
Excellent from start to finish, prompt thorough assessment of the job, quick to complete, and top notch workmanship. We are over the moon with the addition to our kitchen that Russell completed for us. Thanks!
Rob L — Google review
Russell carried out some bespoke cabinet and fitted kitchen work for me recently and the results are outstanding. He has such an eye for design and detail and was very conscientious throughout the project. I can't recommend his work highly enough. If you are thinking of making improvements to your kitchen, do give him a call.
David D — Google review
Kubo Kitchens upgraded our kitchen recently and my wife and I are extremely happy with the result. All of the trades from plumbers, cabinet makers, electricians and stone people were absolutely superb. Over the years we've had quite a bit of renovation work done and this experience was by far the best we've ever had. All the timescales set were met and our inconvenience without a kitchen was kept to a minimum. We would not hesitate in recommending Kubo kitchens to anybody. Thank you Russell and Kubo

A lovely area set just off the high street where you can catch a moments peace and quiet or distract the children from shopping for half an hour and let them burn off some energy on the lovely playground. We went for a wander to find the local lions club set up in there and the park was bustling. Lovely mooching around watching magicians and puppeteers

Nestled in the charming village of Chawton, The Greyfriar is a delightful 16th-century inn that exudes rustic charm with its exposed beams and brickwork. This inviting pub serves up classic British fare, offering a menu that features everything from hearty main dishes to light bar snacks. A unique aspect of The Greyfriar is its connection to literary history; it’s named after the crest of the Knight family, who played a significant role in Jane Austen's life.
I adore this pub. Inside is cozy and they welcome dogs inside. Look on the bar for dog treats. The food was very good and everything was reasonably priced. The staff were wonderful.

The pub is in new hands and the menu is different to the one being shown here. We were greeted warmly . I chose hunters chicken and it came with a salad which had a dressing. Nice chips. We were too full for a pudding. My daughter had lasagna with a crispy topping which she liked. Very friendly. We would like to return but we live quite a way away as only visiting for the weekend but recommend this pub. I wish the landlord and his staff the very best for their new venture

This place is batting way above their current rating! Delicious, locally-sourced staples, and TONS of GF and allergy-friendly options. Fish & chips are perfect, sausages are unbelievable and both mash & gravy are like mum’s. Friendly service, comfortable historic atmosphere directly across from Jane Austen House Museum. Outdoor eating out back. One note: food begins at 18:00, so if you’re a visitor from far off you might want to pay attention to that.

Rothsay Education Centre (Bedford) Day-outing to Chawton and Jane Austen’s house - but a lunchtime call in at The Greyfriar was a must! Pub
Nestled in the charming town of Alton, The George Alton is a delightful bistro-style pub that exudes a warm and rustic ambiance, complete with retro touches. This inviting locale specializes in globally inspired gluten-free dishes crafted from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. With its thoughtful menu catering to diverse tastes, it offers an exciting dining experience that stands out among local establishments.
I took my family out to George Pub and I must say we were very much impressed. 1st we met with a lovely young lady Alice she was a darling looking after us, but we had some questions about the food since our son has some food allergies, she then introduced us to Andy which took his allergen chart n walk us through the menu as to what is safe for our son to eat. He even took it further by getting management involved which is Carol. They took care of us like we were family n like our son was their own. That how much they care. So what am saying we got great service from beginning to end. The food was great customer service was off the chats n the atmosphere was welcoming. My wife was impressed with all that great service and we will b coming back especially for the garlic butter chips. I personally give the George Pub 20 stars review. And I endorse this pub. Everyone should visit...its a must. Great food, great staff n great management

I'm keeping The food and the atmosphere were great, and the portion sizes were generous. They often have special offers throughout the week, such as 1-1 cocktail deals and the option to get any 4 tapas with a bottle of wine. Overall, I was pleased with the menu. On the downside, their service was quite slow, and the staff seemed a bit disorganized. Hopefully, things will have improved by our next visit.

Came here for lunch via the Watercress Line Heritage Railway as gluten free was mentioned in the reviews. It was a long walk from the station. The whole menu and kitchen is gluten free, but the menu is very limited which dampened the excitement. Such a shame as its a great idea to be fully gluten free. Could do with a few more simple pub classics on the menu like sausages and pies or all day breakfast etc. Still, tasted good with a good range of drinks and friendly staff.
Graddy 6 — Google review

Zachary S — Google review
Updating my review to reflect the new tenancy. TL;DR - Good pub. Great food. Nice concept - something different for the area. Having seen the new menu before the re-open I was keen to visit and try out the gluten free menu. The menu feels progressive and thoughtful with something for everyone. The added bonus is that everything is gluten free- which brings a welcome change to the rest of the pubs in the area as this had previously been something only really found in larger towns/cities. It is with noting this also extends to a selection of gluten free beers. Being an advocate of a gluten reduced diet this is perfect, and the food tastes excellent (if you are worried that the gluten free aspect detracts from the overall taste/quality of the food this is certainly not the case!). Not much, however, can be said for the décor as the inside of the pub was mid renovation when we visited- this didn't present an issue due to COVID restrictions meaning we had to eat outside under a marquee. We are looking forward to seeing what they do to the place! All in all a great dining experience with fab food and attentive service. I hope this pub continues to thrive under its new tenancy whilst maintaining its welcoming and cosy atmosphere. Ps- the website also states the aim is for zero waste after the first year - which is a huge positive in anyone's books!! Pps - go for the gluten free brownie and thank me later!

I came here a week ago to find some rope or string strong enough to hold a banner, and an elderly lady was there who was kind enough to walk me through some of the products they had in store. Thank you! Will definitely pop in to the store if I ever need to in Alton! 😊 Sheikh Ahmed!

Always lovely to drop in and just grab a much needed item you find lacking at home. Always helpful and friendly staff when I visit.

Didn't take responsibility for their awful customer service, instead going for the "sorry you felt that way" non-apology. Clearly management is as bad as the old customer assistant who spoke about me in third person to literally insult/mock me to the person I was with. Utterly useless.

Lovely array of all things garden and home. This shop suits all pockets and staff are friendly but not intrusive whilst browsing . A good place for wild bird food and feeders. Always enjoy shopping and if an item is not in stock they can order it for you
Alison R — Google review
A really good hardware shop, huge variety of items with smaller amounts available to view and collect. With very attentive staff, knowledgeable and willing to help and carry items. Highly recommend.
Chris R — Google review
Always have the little DIY bits I need & today was no exception. Prices are pretty good for a small high street firm when compared to the national chains, but the service so much better - Issy and Daniel were friendly and very helpful. Will continue to support this local store 👍🏼
Ben N — Google review
Love the people that run this place, very friendly and helpful with a good knowledge of their products. If you cannot find what you are looking for, then they are more than happy to order it in for you. Some prices vary, a few pennies over what other major shops would sell, but more often a few pennies lower than what other shops sell. All in all, my favourite home and and hardware eir shop.

Anglican church
Nestled in the heart of Alton, St. Lawrence's Church stands as a testament to the town's rich history and architectural beauty. Dating back to the 11th century, this historic church played a significant role during the Battle of Alton in the English Civil War, where it served as a defensive stronghold for Royalist forces. The scars of battle are still visible on its walls, adding an intriguing layer to its character.
This is a really lovely church . Lots of interesting information.

I attended an organ recital there recently. It was wonderful!
Lynn S — Google review
Not been inside the church, but, it has a lot of history, to it.
T — Google review
Visit eight times a year for their monthly organ recitals. Now in the 56th season of recitals by top Organists. Church has a very fine organ which is due for a makeover in the next year or so, for which fundraising is ongoing. A very old church, the walls of which bear the scars of battle from the Civil War.
Peter H — Google review
Beautiful old building. Plenty of interesting historic features. Bullet holes in the door from the English Civil War, 15th century paintings on a pillar, carved Norman capitals.
George H — Google review
Needs a good clean and quite bare inside thanks to Puritan whitewashing but the fine location and civil war history are notable. Norman core inside, not really detectable but very old.

Wessex Arts is a vibrant hub for cultural experiences, and one of its standout events is the Alton Beer Festival. This delightful gathering showcases an impressive selection of beers, ciders, perries, and juices—perfect for those who appreciate quality beverages. While volunteers run the festival, their passion shines through in every aspect of the event. Attendees can enjoy live music from talented bands over the weekend while soaking up the lively atmosphere.
My visit was the Alton Beer Festival. I help out there and really love it. All the people working there are volunteers. I have to avoid drinking because I have to drive home, but it's still a delightful event. The beers, I'm told, are sublime, a great collection. I also hear that the ciders, perry's and juices are great. I can confirm that for the apple juice, yum. The music is great; three excellent bands over the Friday and Saturday. For me the most important factors are the punters, the beer lovers and friends. Unlike many beer festivals, Alton' s is all in aid of charity and the punters are delightful. I always have a great time, lots of laughs and lovely people to laugh with. The food is also great, Thai food and the Scouts' burgers etc. I have been to other beer festivals, but none as happy and fun as Alton's. Do go if you have the chance. For the non-beer drinkers too. They also have wine! 😂 Sorry, I didn't have time to take pictures.

The Allen Gallery, located in Alton, South East England, is home to an impressive collection of ceramics dating back to the 17th century. The gallery regularly hosts exhibitions featuring arts, crafts, and photography. Visitors can also enjoy a welcoming cafe and accessible toilet facilities on-site. The well-maintained garden provides a relaxing outdoor space for guests to unwind. Additionally, the gallery offers a kids' area upstairs and often showcases different shows throughout the year.
We visited specifically to see the Quirky Quilts exhibition but also had a look around the other displays and the lovely garden. Park in Victoria Rd carpark, then it's a 2 minute walk. Entry to the Allen Gallery is free but you can leave a cash donation in a secure tub. Small coffee and biscuits area with seating or out in the garden

Good little gallery at the top of town. Long term display of pottery if you like that sort of thing. Gallery which has different shows on over the course of the year. Good outside space, well maintained garden. Self service cafe area with a couple of tables and coffee/tea machine, home made cakes and a few other bits and pieces. Very friendly staff. Good kids area upstairs too!

The museum is housed in a historic building and occupies two floors filled with treasures and information about the area's past. Visitors can expect to find many interesting displays, some of which are quite famous. The staff at the reception are known for being helpful and knowledgeable.
An impromptu visit on Saturday with my 3 grandsons (4,5&7)they loved it and each found something that they found interesting.Lots about the history of Alton too. Small museum but the staff were lovely and friendly. Lots of hands on activities for the children .We will be going back in the half term.

A cute, free, old-fashioned museum that’s worth a 20-minute browse. I love any history so enjoyed the Neolithic and Roman history in particular. The gem of the collection is considered a brooch but it’s not that impressive IMO visually. Maybe better lighting would help? I liked the Roman doodle better and a pretty funny poster on pigs at the market. The Barbies inside the exhibits is an interesting touch (relates to a children’s discovery trail).
Jennifer S — Google review
This seems like an ideal place to spend some time. I did not go into the museum because of my significant foot pain and the walking became a bit much. I also think that it was lovely to see the woman at the front desk knitting because that is something that you do not see on a regular basis. It was really nice to see and she was very friendly. The nearby War Mememorial is also worth seeing. People have taken the time to decorate stones and it is a beautiful job and effort. Please see the photos I took of them because I think that they are just wonderful.

Friendly staff and a great museum. Good mix of historical information about Alton and the surrounding area with a variety of interesting exhibits. Also great for children - dedicated children's area at the start with toys and game as well as various things to do dotted around the museum. Treasure trail was fun for the kids. Well worth a visit.

Finding a museum as good as this in a relatively small town is a joy. The Curtis Museum hits the right notes for sure. The Curtis Museum is a medium sized museum with enough interest to keep you occupied for up to an hour. Many interesting displays, and some quite famous. Visit it yourself to find out what. Not to be missed if you're passing through Alton with an hour to spare. It's in the high street and easily spotted.

Sandwich shop
Subway is a laid-back, counter-service eatery where you can craft your own sandwiches and salads tailored to your taste. With a focus on health-conscious choices, it’s an ideal spot for those looking to enjoy fresh ingredients. The customer service here shines, ensuring that each visit is pleasant and satisfying. While the ambiance may not be the most luxurious, the quality of their subs remains commendable. If you're driving over, there's paid parking available at the back—just make sure to be quick!
It was irritating because I placed an order with one assistant but then the other came to make my order. He didn’t ask about how I wanted it (warmed meat but not warmed wrap and salad). When I raised it with him he said how he’s done this job for 10 years and blamed me for not saying despite him diving in the make the order before me realising he was making the order rather than the original person I spoke to. Just annoying argument ensued. Dreadful customer service that ruined the atmosphere
Ruby P — Google review
I selected salad and sauce on my order, it came with nothing but ham and turkey, bread was doughy and tasteless. Called to advise the order came without salad! Man I spoke to was rude and refused to acknowledge what I was saying! Told them shocking customer service and that I woukd never use them again
Del W — Google review
One of the worst service experience ever. 2 nights in a row i have gone to this subway 40 mins before closing time, the first time they told me the oven was broken and that they couldn’t serve, even when i told them i didn’t want a sandwich in the oven, the server was then rude and abrupt and slammed the door, locked up and just left. The second night we went it was the same thing except they had no excuse, when i told them it wasn’t fair to close up this early every night when it says it should be open online they both looked very guilty and were extremely rude to me in return. I hope this feeds back to head office because this type of service is unacceptable and to not be open during open hours is just a missed opportunity for money
Sophie P — Google review
I asked for something and he literally didnt do it he added mayo (im allergic) I told him and he still added it
Thifany R — Google review
Ok, it’s Subway not fine dining. But when you have to ask for your ingredients to actually be spread out and get huffed at for not wanting a one-sided sandwich, then it’s just chucked together, barely wrapped and almost thrown at you, it’s not really ok. I could almost understand if they’d been busy but I was literally the only person in there 😂

First subway where the food bag is just dropped through to customer. Served by the really unfriendly guy who's place is in any pork farm where he can serve. Really disappointed. 17 September 2022 Old car meeting

Asked the fool if he put nacho cheese in the sub he said yes got home no sauce tiny bit of meet (Looks like they ran a bit low) not impressed even the dog wouldn't eat it! Also just realised subway is a really expensive roll with alot of salad that looks like it's been breathed on by staff most of the day. Not a fan also the staff here are really rude, unhelpful and lack customer service. So please people stop supporting bellends and they will have no choice but to improve there service.

I used to love stopping in for a coffee and snack but my last visit was so disappointing. The toilets were not clean, tables dirty and as I looked around it was hard to find a seat that wasn't soiled or shabby. The staff were lovely but over worked and obviously only have time to make coffee. Sad to say that I won't be visiting again. Its not the staffs fault, money needs to be spent on more staff and updating the coffee shop. Maybe neros should remember there are other coffee shops in Alton which are a nicer environment to sit in.

Disappointing and frustrating experience due to very slow service. One member of staff seemed to be taking a break over busiest period of lunch, so only 2 staff one of whom was a trainee. More annoying they prioritised large Deliveroo order over queue of customers in the shop. Coffee not good but cheese toastie was good. Trainee needs more training with his interpersonal skills with customers.

Our favourite restaurant without a doubt! We don’t venture out much, but whenever we do this is our first choice. The food is delicious, so fresh & perfectly cooked, it’s the best quality food we’ve had, we’re so lucky that it’s right on our doorstep. The service is always 5* too, always friendly & attentive. We recently also asked them to do the rehearsal dinner for our wedding (32 people) & it was an absolute success. All of our guests left with big smiles & full bellies & all agreed it was the best Italian (& best restaurant) that they’d visited in a long long time. We had a few vegan, GF & guests with allergies, all were catered for & we’re really pleased with their food too. and they also had a part in our wedding - a wedding cheesecake! 2 March 2024. The website said OPEN. We went to see Alton Abbey and it was closed due to Covid. It is not worth a trip from London. If it is permanently closed, it would be great if the search functions made it clear.

Only allowed to visit the grounds, ordinary visitors not allowed inside the church. Well maintained garden. Free car park. Footways and lawns, more or less flat. Not the most famous Abbey Road.

I'm not a religious person but I do love the ambience of the abbey and gardens

Incredible place. Welcome signs everywhere as you go in. Gardens are beautiful. Abbey is too and if you get the chance chat with a monk or two. So friendly. Anyone is welcome to join them in the abbey for services. No opening times to wonder round the gardens. They are always open. The abbey itself is partially open and if you ring the bell you can go into other areas. There are a few things for sale in the entrance area. Cards etc. And some wood carved items made by the the monks from wood at the abbey. I cannot emphasise enough how truly tranquil this place is!

After my home, my favourite place in the world. Wonderful Benedictine hospitality, delicious food, simple but comfortable rooms, a cozy common room with a wood fire for chilly days, plus plenty of beatiful grounds to wander through between meals and services. The monks are wonderful, and surprisingly funny. Come even for just for a day and you'll have a little bit of Alton Abbey with you fit the rest of your life.

The Gliding Heritage Centre is a must-visit destination for anyone with even a passing interest in aviation and gliding history. Visitors can enjoy free guided tours led by passionate volunteers who share their extensive knowledge about the fascinating world of gliders. The centre features an impressive collection of vintage gliders, showcasing the evolution of this unique sport. Guests are often taken on a tour around the airfield's perimeter road, providing insight into ongoing activities at the site.
I had a really interesting tour from John here yesterday and learnt a lot. I was surprised at the large number of gliders there; spanning the entire history of gliding. If you're interested in aviation I'd thoroughly recommend a visit. I will no doubt return with some friends in the future.

A hidden gem. If you have even the vaguest interest in aviation/gliding history, take this fantastic (free) tour led by engaging and knowledgeable volunteers. A fascinating collection of lovingly cared-for vintage gliders.

Thoroughly enjoyable solo tour with, if I remember correctly, Tony. The tour is completely free though I left a donation as it was well worth it. I had no idea how interesting gliders are. Their history is presented by way of a hangar and workshop tour. Also very interesting to be driven around the perimeter road to see what goes on at the airfield. Very friendly crowd and a nice cafe on site which I visited prior to the Sunday tour. Thank you for making me so welcome.

Wonderful visit for an aviation enthusiast! Book in advance!

Visiting some friends at Lasham, we were unexpectedly offered the opportunity of a guided tour of the Heritage Centre. Although I have a layman's interest in aviation, I knew nothing of gliders and gliding. We were shown around the collection by the wonderful Graham Garnet, who explained the history of gliding and the background to many of the examples in the collection. A particular feature of most of these machines is that they are in airworthy condition and are flown regularly (although not necessarily frequently). As well as two hangars full of gliders, we also had the privilege of being shown around the workshop, where aircraft are restored and repaired. All in all a fascinating trip and well worth your time, even if you have no knowledge of gliding.

A fantastic place for aviation history. If you wanna see how gliding started then you are at the right place. See how they restore gliders. Amazing work

Fantastic collection of vintage gliders, most of them maintained in airworthy condition and regularly flown.

Nestled in the heart of the countryside, The Sun Inn is a quintessential rural pub that exudes charm and warmth. Housed in a historic building dating back to the 1600s, it features rustic wood beams and inviting log fires that create a cozy atmosphere perfect for any occasion. Guests rave about the excellent food, which includes seasonal game and hearty roasts, all prepared with care and passion. The friendly staff enhance the experience with their attentive service and knowledge of local ales.
Just a wonderful place to be for a Sunday lunch - we were in the right hand side of the pub which was perfect. The choice of roasts was brilliant and you can have a duo or a trio as well as your favourite - our party had a mix of all the roasts and there was a great choice for kids too. Great beer and also a solid wine list.

It has taken us almost 5 years to find this amazing tucked away gem (and believe me we have looked far and wide) and here it is! An intimate, family-run pub with a cozy chatty atmosphere, good wholesome food prepared and deliciously, finger-licking home cooked with passion and thought. A menu with a choice for all tastes, good value for money, friendly, smiling owners/staff, a log fire, parking... the list just goes on. Thank you All. And an especial thank you to you, Megan, to your talented husband and chef, thank you to Patrick for being such a Chatty barman and to all the others we didn't get to meet. Megan, we wish your Sun Inn all the success in the world. Well done! We will always be back. Warm regards Catherine & Steven Burkham

What a great pub! So much character and the fireplaces are fantastic, bet they’re great in the winter. Food we had was delicious and the fries were especially good, could have eaten a bucket of those. Staff are all brilliant too, super friendly! Will definitely be back.

What a fantastic pub! The Sun Inn is everything a countryside pub should be. The pub itself has a real charm, set in a gorgeous 1600s building with characterful interior. There’s a roaring fireplace and plenty of seating available both indoors and out. Beware the low ceiling and doorways though if you’re tall like me!! The staff were a highlight - so friendly and attentive, up for a laugh and knowledgeable about their menu and ales. The menu itself is split into nibbles, traditional pub fare, and ‘posh plates’ with options to suit every taste. I chose the ‘Boozy Moo’ pie. I was a bit disappointed that it arrived as a pot pie, as the menu didn’t state this and I’d have loved to have pastry the entire way around rather than just a stew topped with pastry. Regardless, the dish had robust flavours and excellent sides (the confit garlic mash paired with the rich gravy was divine). I also tried the chicken gyros, which was absolutely fantastic and gave me a bit of food envy to be honest!! My partner ordered the curry-battered fish and chips with coriander pea purée and mango chutney which turned out to be a total revelation - the flavours worked so well. The majority of the menu was under £20, which made this pub excellent value for money compared to others in the area. I would not hesitate to come back here for more delicious food and good times!! ☀️

This is without a doubt a first class experience every time. The food is incredible, and I mean...best I've had in the UK. The chef changes the menu on a regular basis with exciting dishes and we have always had a great experience. The staff is super! If you have a dog, you're made welcome here. I've introduced different people to this pub who have all decided to make it their favourite pub :)

Pretty and quaint, remote location, friendly bar staff, well kept ales. The pub is at the top of a steep road, the perfect location if you are on a bike! Amazing roast dinners, especially the Porcetta (pork) roasts.

Delicious food, a proper English country pub. The food was tasty, freshly cooked and served nice and warm and all meals came out together. The menu is good value and very tasty. The atmosphere was also really nice, great service.

You couldn't do better for a superb and authentic English country pub. Exceptional atmosphere, friendly welcome, and beautifully-presented, delicious food. Well worth the short diversion off the beaten track.
