Anstruther Fish Bar is a renowned seafood spot located in the tranquil village of Anstruther on the Scottish coast in Fife. The restaurant offers a picturesque setting overlooking the harbor and serves up delectable fish 'n' chips made from sustainably sourced haddock. In addition to their signature dish, they also feature local lobster and crab options for patrons to enjoy either on-site or as takeout.
You know you're in for a treat when you see the queue stretching down the harbor—and it's worth every second of the wait! The Anstruther Fish Bar is simply a Scottish institution for a reason. The fish is incredibly fresh, with a light and crispy batter that's cooked to golden perfection. The chips are thick, fluffy, and just begging for a generous splash of salt and vinegar. Enjoying your meal from the paper on a bench by the water, watching the fishing boats come in, is a quintessential coastal experience. The service is fast and friendly, even with the crowds, and the quality is consistently top-notch. It's more than just a chippy; it's a delicious, memory-making part of any trip to the East Neuk. Don't miss it!

We’ve been coming up to Anstruther for years in the camper, and more often than not we’d find ourselves in the queue outside the famous Fish Bar. Years ago, the wait always felt worth it—the fish was generous, fresh, and paired perfectly with their always-delicious chips. Sadly, this visit left us underwhelmed. The chips are still very nice, no complaints there, but the fish itself was a real letdown. The portion was so small it felt like there was more batter than actual fish inside. Granted, the batter was tasty, but when the fish is meant to be the star of the show, it just didn’t live up to what it once was. The service also seems to have slipped a notch. Not terrible, but definitely not what it used to be when things ran like clockwork. All in all, it just didn’t have the same sparkle that made it worth queueing for in the past. Next year, we’ll probably give somewhere else a try. Still good chips, but sadly the Fish Bar has lost a bit of the magic it used to have.
Jamie K — Google review
We visited this place for a classic British meal and were not disappointed. The Fish and Chips was truly traditional and delicious—the batter was crispy, the fish was flaky and fresh, and the chips were perfect. The service was efficient and prompt, though perhaps not overly friendly or warm; they were definitely professional. What stood out immediately was how super clean the restaurant was. This attention to cleanliness is always reassuring and added to the positive experience. Highly recommended if you're looking for an excellent, authentic Fish and Chips in a pristine setting. Great food, great standard of hygiene!
Daniele L — Google review
Just go! A friend who used to live in Edinburgh recommended this place for fish and chips. I had the lemon sole and my wife had the traditional haddock. Both were excellent! The lemon sole was a little more flaky but a thinner filet. Both had excellent batter and the fries were great. A very, very good fish and chips!
Scott K — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Anstruther Fish Bar Had the Haddock Fish Supper and honestly — the best fish and chips of my life! The fish was perfectly golden and flaky, the batter crisp without being greasy, and the chips… just incredible. It’s honestly akin to magic, TBH. The staff were super friendly and helpful, making the whole experience even better. Worth the trip from Australia just to taste it! 💡 Tip: It can get very busy, especially during lunch and dinner rush, so aim to go close to opening time if you want to avoid the queue. An absolute must-visit — this is how fish and chips should be done.
Thomas O — Google review
On having a cottage break away with our dogs we thought we'd travel the 40 minutes to try the famous Anstruther fish bar. We were not disappointed. The best fish supper ive had. Really tasty batter and the freshest haddock the chips were fluffy and crisp on the outside. The wife went rogue and got halloumi sticks with chips and curry sauce. In her words the best chippy she's had. I had a side of homemade tattar sauce. It was all delicious. I can see why this is ranked the best. This will be a regular whilst in Fife.
Iain M — Google review
Called into the Anstruther Fish Bar on Friday afternoon very busy with sit in and takeaway although I was a fare bit back in the queue the young lass took my order and some 20 minutes later my order was ready. I ordered their traditional battered haddock 🐟 and chips 🍟 along with a breaded 🍞 lemon 🍋 sole 🐟 and chips 🍟. The breaded 🍞 lemon 🍋 sole 🐟 was plentiful with two lemon 🍋 sole 🐟 and a fare portion of chips 🍟. All of the above were tasty and delicious 😋. On the other hand the battered haddock 🐟 was a bit of a damp squib as there were three very small haddock 🐟 fillets in the box 📦 not their usual full on can't get it into the box single haddock 🐟, the chips 🍟 were good slight crispy on the outside and soft inside. Although I did notice that the takeaway box 📦 had shrunk somewhat in size to a very small oblong box 📦. All in all not the best experience we have had at this chippy and at a cost of just under £25. I'll be giving the Wee chippy a try next time we're in Anstruther.
Alex W — Google review
Not quite sure why people rave about this place. The fish and chips are good, but there was almost no fish under my crispy batter. Seems like I and the rest of the early customers got the odd bits and ends from the previous day… Disappointing really, as there are many other less ‘famous’ fish and chip shops where can get a full fillet and more chips for a lower price. Service was ok, cleanliness was fine

Anstruther is home to its very own Anstruther Model Solar System, which consists of 11 bronze plates located mainly on Shore Street. These plates are spaced out according to the scale of the solar system at 1 to 10 billion and stretch across the town for about 600 meters. It takes approximately 30 minutes to explore this unique model solar system. One notable change from the map is that Uranus is now located at a company called Thornton's instead of Pagan Osborne.
It takes about 30 minutes to do if you take your time. The only change from the map is Uranus is now at a company called Thornton's not Pagan Osborne. Be careful when you go round to the esplanade as the pavement becomes narrow on the high street and you have to walk on the road.

It is not a place but a set of wall plaques depicting the relative distances of the solar system. Gives you a good walk.

Isle of May Cruises May Princess (Anstruther Pleasure Cruises )

Embark on a memorable journey with the Isle of May Cruises May Princess (Anstruther Pleasure Cruises). This family-friendly boat trip takes you from Anstruther to the breathtaking Isle of May, offering an opportunity to explore one of Scotland's stunning isles. The friendly and knowledgeable crew ensures a pleasant experience, despite potential bumps along the way. Spend three hours discovering the island's abundant wildlife, including puffins, guillemots, seals, and more.
Our trip to Isle of May was such an unforgettable experience. The island itself has so much history, not to mention the spectacular views and the wildlife. The staff on the May Princess were friendly and knowledgeable; we thoroughly enjoyed chatting to them about all the different seabirds and ongoing research on the island. There is a little gift shop/bar on board as well, which meant we were able to enjoy a cheeky drink on the westward crossing back to Anstruther.
Zera E — Google review
Visited on 11 April expecting to see puffins on the island however when we arrived the warden informed the staff that they had almost all left and went out to sea but luckily I managed to a photo from some distance and was probably the only one on the boat lucky enough to get one. Anyway, despite that it was still a great day out particularly due to the excellent weather we had. The boat cruise was well organised, they expect you to be there about 45 minutes before departure time which varies due to the tides. There is a hut situated on the middle pier next to the RNLI station where you check in and get a boarding card. It is advisable to book in advance as many days will be fully booked during the peak times. The journey time to the island is about 1 hour and the boat carries up to 100 passengers. The boat has a little snack bar selling hot drinks and some souvenirs. There are also toilets on the boat. Beware that the crossing can be a bit choppy and this is exaggerated on the top deck so best to concentrate on the horizon to avoid motion sickness. Depending on conditions the boat will do a little tour and the skipper gives a little commentary over the loud speaker with some useful information and history. We had 2 1/2 hours on the island, I would have liked a bit more time as it’s difficult to cover the whole island in that timeframe especially when stopping to take photos, packed lunch, etc. The return time was clearly displayed as well on our arrival at the island and the staff use a clicker to make sure everyone has returned. The crew were all very professional and friendly and given that I didn’t get to see as much wildlife as I had hoped for it was still a brilliant day out. I will be back in the next couple of months so will keep an eye on how quickly the availability fills up.

Had a very good day sailing out to isle of May, especially as it was a very calm day. The boat was fully booked so be prepared to be very close to other people. The crew were very knowledgeable about all the wild life, coffee and snacks on board. We had two hours on the island, which seems a lot but time flies quickly. Centre on Isle is very basic toilets and centre with active for kids and info about birds on island. Well worth the visit even though most puffins and other birds had left.
Allan D — Google review
A fantastic trip and well worth the money. The crew were fantastic and very knowledgeable. We were lucky to see a vast array of wildlife and some people need to remember the crew cannot make animals appear. The boat has a nice little snack and gift section.

Loved the trip to the Isle of May on the May Princess! The crew was very kind and accommodating, providing a memorable experience with their knowledgeable commentary about the island's wildlife and history. The trip lasts around 4.5 to 5 hours, including 2.5 to 3 hours ashore on the island. The May Princess sails from Anstruther to the Isle of May almost every day from April 1st to September 30th. A great way to see thousands of puffins and other seabirds in their natural habitat!
Nuno L — Google review
We wanted to do something different when visiting the Fife coast, and this was it. We really enjoyed our visit to the Isle of May and had a great experience onboard. The skipper and staff were great, and very knowledgable. The island is great to visit but be mindful of what time of year you go, depending on what you want to see. We just missed out on seeing Puffins by a couple of weeks, which was a shame but there is a lot to see on the island. There’s a tuck shop onboard with ample selection, if you were hungry or thirsty. Would visit again, at a different time of year to see different animals.

Had an amazing trip today on The May Princess. Was a wee bit choppy but a good laugh! The crew were really friendly and looked after us really well. Loved exploring the Isle of May and had plenty of time to walk around at our own pace. Will definitely return!
Fiona B — Google review
A really memorable experience. The crew are locals who know their stuff and are very mindful of the local wildlife. They even released a puffling to the sea on our trip. You get a couple of hours to explore the island, take in the views and have a bite to eat. Just be prepared that the sea can be choppy, but the crew were very quick to hand out sick bags to anyone who needed one!

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with the Isle of May Boat Trips, departing from Anstruther harbour aboard the charming May Princess. This journey takes you to a stunning National Nature Reserve, renowned for being home to the UK's largest puffin colony and numerous grey seals. The trip lasts around 4-5 hours, allowing you 2-3 hours to explore this picturesque island. As you approach the Isle of May, you'll be greeted by breathtaking views of its cliffs and iconic South Horn lighthouse.
This is worth every penny. A great day out on the boat and a fantastic wee island to visit at the end of the trip . I'd never seen a puffin in my life now I've seen 52000 . There was lots of wildlife to see and we enjoyed our homemade soup from a flask as we watched the thousands of birds fly around. This is a magical place and we were lucky to pick a day that was warm. Don't miss the chance to book a trip for £40 for the best 4 hrs you'll spend in Anstruther

Our recent speedboat trip to the Isle of May was absolutely amazing. The journey itself offered stunning views that any nature lover would cherish. Once we arrived, we had about 2.5 hours to explore the island on foot, taking in breathtaking vistas and observing thousands of birds, including our beloved puffins. The combination of the thrilling boat ride and the serene beauty of the island made it one of our best experiences in Scotland. If you find yourself in the area, this trip is not to be missed!

A Truly Magical Experience – Puffins, Nature, and Pure Wonder! When we began searching for a way to see puffins during our time in Scotland, we came across Isle of May Boat Trips — and we are so very glad that we did. From the moment we checked in until the moment we returned to the mainland, every part of the experience was exceptional. The staff were kind, helpful, and clearly passionate about what they do. Arriving on the Isle of May was already exciting, but nothing could have prepared us for the overwhelming beauty of the island. The experience of seeing puffins up close, along with many other bird species in their natural habitat, was awe-inspiring. It was one of the most moving and unforgettable moments of our trip. Walking the island brought a sense of peace and connection that was both humbling and energizing. The quiet, the fresh sea air, and the breathtaking views created an atmosphere that felt almost sacred. Learning about the work of the volunteer staff who help preserve and study the island made the experience even more meaningful. As we returned to the boat, we were lucky enough to glimpse a seal pup — a perfect ending to an already magical day. We never could have imagined the sheer sense of wonder we would feel on this one excursion. Thank you to the entire team at Isle of May Boat Trips for providing such a special and unforgettable experience. It is something we will cherish forever.
John S — Google review
We had a great time and saw a lot of puffins and other birds and even some seals. The island is very windy so it's a bit chilly. I'd recommend a warm coat or even gloves and a scarf.
Lit V — Google review
I received a trip to may isle as a birthday present. Having always wanted to go, my expectations were high, and I wasn't disappointed. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. The crossing took less than an hour and was a little rough in a stiff breeze. I would definitely suggest this vessel over the smaller ones if you are a little prone to sickness. The vessel has toilet facilities and even a small shop selling hot and cold drinks and even a stiffer one if required. They also have sweet treats and very popular puffin gifts. On arriving at the island, you are met by wildlife wardens who give a brief talk of the particulars on the island. If nature is what you are seeking this is undoubtedly a breathtaking experience. For around 3 hours we were surrounded by tens of thousands of seabirds of many types. Let's be honest I wanted to see the puffins and explaining what they were like is difficult to put into words. With over 60,000 pairs on the island you are almost surrounded with birds like butterflies in a meadow.
Andrew W — Google review
45 min boat trip to reach the island which is beautiful with loads of puffins, eider ducks, guillemot, razorbills, gannets and other seabirds, seals can be seen too. There are also lighthouses to explore. The guys who man the boat were lovely and very helpful. Terrain is relatively easy going, some hills but not overly steep and you must stick to the paths to avoid disturbing the nesting birds. No cafes or shops on the island so take food and drink although the boat has a small snack bar. We loved this trip which is about 2.5hrs on the island altogether and a great experience for bird enthusiasts.
Elizabeth W — Google review
This is a tour not to be missed. We took the speed boat to the Isle and our tour guide was fabulous. Full of facts and humor. (Simon is believe) The island itself is just amazing. Its A LOT of walking but the views keep you going. You're given plenty of time. We're not the fittest and everything was manageable. We saw puffins everywhere. And a few seals. And every other bird that inhabits the island. Too many to count. Worth every penny.
Norman S — Google review
The Isle of May is definitely worth a visit but if you're after puffins make sure to get three in July since in August they are already gone

Well worth a visit, a lovely little harbour and small town with fab shops, great cafés and award winning fish and chips. A relaxed, friendly and calm vibe that we loved. There's good parking next to the marina and also free parking a 5 minute walk out of town near the large Co Op.

Lovely harbour, very picturesque especially in the sunshine like I had today. Limited paid parking next to the harbour however there is plenty of free parking next to the Coop on the outskirts of town but is still a relatively short walk away.

Toilets are ok but 30p to have a pee is a bit excessive. If you can wait go half's with someone else and chip in 15pence each or if you're not that desperate someone might let you in for nowt if they have a radar key. There's showers in here too but the door is locked and you're supposed to be able to get a key from the harbour office but it was closed and no one there on Friday at 3pm. So not sure what time you can use the showers. Nice harbour anyway with boats and things. Some look a little worse for wear but most are ok. Few benches around too so its ok to sit around and watch the seagulls

Self-catering accommodation
Murray Library Hostel, a former library turned into a relaxed lodging, offers utilitarian dorms and private rooms with sea views. It's an ideal accommodation for backpackers and larger groups, providing top-notch facilities in the heart of Anstruther. The family room is comfortable with bunk beds and a double bed, while the separate bathroom boasts the best shower. The large kitchen area is well-equipped for meal preparation, and the lounge room provides books and games for guests' use.
Stopped here for a night while on the Fife Coastal Path. Great price for what you get. Clean rooms and common areas (truly the most pleasant hostel kitchen I've ever seen), cozy decor, friendly staff. Great location if you're doing the Path -- super close to many restaurants and you get a superb view of the harbour. Absolutely would come back again.

We stayed with our two teens so that we could attend the Pittenweem arts festival. The hostel is right on the water front, and our rooms looked out over the water. Both rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. They both had little sinks right in the room. Linen and towels were provided. There were two shower stalls, a toilet stall and two sinks in the shared area on our floor, which we seemed to only share with one other person. There were also common washrooms beside the lounge area. The lounge had games, couches and chairs, and two coffee tables. The kitchen was open and welcoming with a large central table and a small fridge. We received arrival information well in advance, and had no trouble at all with our booking. Re.parking: we did park in the public lot past the hostel, but at the end of the day we moved to the street at the side of the hostel. The area is busy during the day because there are a lot of nice restaurants and cafes. What a beautiful town! We will be back.

A lovely, clean, quiet hostel right in the heart of Anstruther. The single rooms at the top of the hostel were just delightful. Comfy bed, view out onto the sea, and binos supplied for any bird watching! The shower was great - lots of hot water and good pressure. Would definitely stay here again.

Great place, perfect location on the seafront and bus stop right outside. Excellent gluten-free fish n chips at The Wee Chippy next door. Darius, manager, super friendly and helpful. Kitchen and bathrooms immaculately clean. Dorm is perfectly functional but although I knew when booking that dorm was mixed, I did not like this as a solo woman, esp 2nd night when no other women in the dorm.

Had a table booked for 7:30pm got welcomed and show to our table then never seen them again till 8pm. Asked if we could order drinks and was told no, let me get your food order first!. Food came later and was nice enough. However, the mixed pakroa starter says mushroom, but we got none. I asked but told no u don't get this even though it's on the menu? They also forgot our nan breads. Again, we had all ate half our meal before we saw him again to ask for our nans. Now I know why there was a big queue outside the fish n chip shop

We recently attended Eastern Touch for a meal to celebrate my birthday after reading such good reviews online, and I can honestly say I’ve found my new favourite restaurant. To say the food was incredible would be an understatement. We had four starters, four mains, and accompaniments of rice and variety of naans. Everything was hot and fresh, and so flavourful! My chicken bhuna was delicious, and I cannot recommend the peshwari naan highly enough. From the moment we entered, we also received such friendly and attentive service from our lovely server Pin! He made us all feel so welcome and was so lovely to talk to. Since our experience, I honestly have not stopped talking about or recommending this restaurant to my colleagues and friends. I will definitely be returning to Eastern Touch in the near future. It truly is a gem of a restaurant, and a place you don’t want to miss!

Had a meal at the Eastern Touch whilst on holiday. There were 6 of us and we hadn’t booked but the staff were great offering to put tables together for us . Service was quick and the food was delicious, hot, generous portions and well presented . 2 in our party had the Chicken Shaslick and said it was the best they’d had ! All in all a lovely meal , I would recommend .

Another fabulous meal at the Eastern Touch (July 2023). The King Prawn Lanka was so delicious, huge fresh king prawns. Service was friendly and efficient. Would recommend booking a table. Previous Review - We've had several takeaway meals from Eastern Touch and every meal has been consistantly delicious. The king prawns are huge and succulent. Definately recommend take away and sit it.

Absolutely wonderful pub which always seems to be busy. Great range of beers and other drinks. No food. Dog friendly. Beautifully refurbished with top quality woodwork and quirky decor. Great toilets. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Great spot right on the sea, they open up their shutters to look out onto the small port of the town. The inside bar is recently renovated and blends modern and ancient beautifully with a stone staircase open right in the middle of the bar. Full selection of beers and excellent cocktails, great spot to enjoy the sunshine!

What a cracking pub with great atmosphere, this might have been because it was extremely busy on the both occasions we were there. A big plus was the service, the staff took their time in pouring the Guinness to make sure it was perfect then they brought it to you table. Going back this week so another few pints of perfect Guinness.

The Dreel Tavern is a historic pub located in Anstruther, just a few minutes from the harbor front. It offers an atmospheric venue for enjoying fine food and drinks, with a lovely beer garden that overlooks the Dreel Burn. The tavern features traditional low ceilings and a charming atmosphere, making it popular among friendly locals. The menu leans towards seafood, offering dishes such as seafood chowder, fish and chips, mussels, and artisan sausages.
Epically old tavern serving plenty choices of ales, spirits and great food. It has a sunny beer garden out the back that looks down onto a burn. The place supposedly once housed King James V back in the 1500s. Definitely worth running up a tab in this tavern, must be one of the oldest pubs in the UK, soak up the history!

We have wanted to try this place for a while after trying to get in by just turning up, but it's always busy. This time, we pre-booked a table. We parked in the street up from the pub and walked down. There was road works on the footpath in front of the pub, which directed pedestrians onto the main road, not very good as this is a busy road. We entered the pub, beware if you are tall, this pub was built years ago, so the lintles are very low. The pub is your classic fisherman's pub, all stone with wooden beams. We were taken to our table, and soon after, a server took our drinks and food order. My Cullen skink was really nice, my wife's soup tasty. Our mains were both sirloin steaks, although not on the menu our server did say there was rib eye available as well. Mine was to be well done. My wife's was medium to well. However, the server mixed these up, and we had to swap plates. My steak seemed to get pinker as I worked my way along it, so not quite well done all the way through. The chips, although salty, were good. We found it to be a bit pricey for the food that was served and the hilarity coming from the kitchen on that night probably contributed to the poorer quality of food. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented but service was let down by the mistake with the steaks. The toilets, although clean, were a bit tired looking and in need of an update. The hand wash and lotion smelled really nice.

INCREDIBLE. Perfect blend of cosy pub and incredible seafood. I wish I lived closer to this gem. The tagliatelle with haddock and smoked mussels was the best fish dish I’ve ever had. Really fresh ingredients, beautiful flavour and well presented. If I lived just 2 hours away from this place I would drive back just for this dish. We had the salmon and caviar to start which was also amazing. 10/10

We wandered in to the Dreel Tavern after a long coastal walk hoping we could get a casual pub lunch. What we got instead was absolutely delicious food and exceptionally well made cocktails, to the point that may have been the best whiskey sour I’ve ever tasted…! The Cullen skink in particularly was ridiculously good, and every small detail (seasoned butter anyone?!) was spot on. Service was fab, friendly and relaxed and the pub itself is beautiful! Would love to spend a long evening there sampling more of the cocktail menu by the fire with a book - a good reason to go back soon!

Anstruther Golf Club, founded in 1890, has evolved over the years from a seven-hole course with wartime defenses to a popular nine-hole course. It is renowned for its challenging Rockies Hole, considered the toughest Par 3 in the UK. The club offers stunning views and an enjoyable golfing experience. Visitors have praised the friendly staff and excellent food at affordable prices.
Hidden gem!!! I found in a book a read so we decided to play a quick as our warm up before The Old Course. Best move ever! We could. It believe how scenic it was. Some fun drivable 4’s. 3 really hard par 3’s. So cool!! Highly recommend as a warm up instead of hitting range balls if you have the time.

One of the most memorable and challenging golf courses I played during my two weeks in Scotland. Not just the famous fifth hole but also #2, 6 and 7 due to the small greens, contouring and wind! Club staff were exceptionally friendly. The greens and bunkers were in excellent condition (better than Old Course). If you’re a a single or twosome, try to get paired up with a member. I was fortunate enough to play with two very hospitable gentlemen. Thanks David and Fraser!

“A Must-Play Gem in Anstruther – An Unforgettable Golfing Experience!” Anstruther Golf Course is a stunning hidden gem that every golf enthusiast should experience. After reading about this charming course before our trip to Anstruther, I made it a priority to play a round with my son, and it did not disappoint. The course, though small, is well maintained, offering a beautiful blend of scenic coastal views and challenging holes that test your skills at every turn. The layout is truly special, with each hole presenting its own unique challenge. The standout is undoubtedly the famous 5th hole (par 3). Standing on the tee box, the shot is as daunting as it is exhilarating, requiring precision and nerve—definitely a hole you won’t forget anytime soon! The green fees are very reasonable, offering excellent value for such a well-kept and memorable course. The welcoming atmosphere and the sense of history add to the overall experience, making it a course you’ll want to return to. If you’re staying in Anstruther and love golf, don’t miss out—book a tee time at Anstruther Golf Course without hesitation! It’s an experience that will be one of the highlights of your visit.

We came here for dinner and had an absolutely fantastic experience! The food was outstanding — the mussels were probably the best we’ve ever had, with a divine sauce that we’re still thinking about. All the ingredients were incredibly fresh, especially the fish and seafood. The sticky toffee pudding was to die for! Service was super friendly and top-notch. And to top it all off, there’s a beautiful view of the Bay of Anstruther from the windows. Highly recommended!

We had an absolutely delicious meal here in July, complete with gorgeous views of the sunset over Anstruther and the water. It looked very quiet and potentially closed from outside but don't let that put you off - we enjoyed scallops with black pudding and apple butter, hake with samphire, nduja, new potatoes and hollandaise, and a decadent, rich and moist sticky toffee pudding. The staff were lovely, the location close enough to Anstruther for an easy walk but far enough to have a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, and the bill extremely reasonable for the quality. We will be back!

Wonderful food at The Rockies, Anstruther Golf Clubs restaurant open to all. The starter dish I had was a scallop, crisp pork belly with curried carrot puree and Mary had the salmon in a bouillabaise sauce as per the menu. Great to see a chef be more adventurous and come with novel and exciting dishes than the normal golf club fare. I know golfers like traditional nourishing grub after a round but we also like to try different dishes. Full marks to this chef. Superb food at very affordable prices.

The room was spotless and the big bed very comfortable, breakfast was lovely and plenty of choice. The staff very friendly and helpful especially Dee who could not do enough for us and was very kind when my husband was taken ill. Will definitely go back there.

Visited the bar twice last week with my husband - made to feel very welcome by staff and the other customers. No frills, pool table, jukebox - good place for a drink and a blether without all the fuss. All covid measures as well are in place which is more than I can say for a few other places ! Will definitely be trying to visit again in the future

Had a great couple of nights in the Royal bar. Really welcoming place, staff were fantastic, esp cammy the barman. All the locals were cracking and very welcoming. I didn't see the rooms but would recommend the bar to anyone. It doesn't look that welcoming from outside but you def get a warm welcome inside

A nice wee hotel in the picturesque harbor town of Anstruther. The hotel is located near the harbor and fairly easy to find, but parking spaces for cars are limited. As we spent a night here during a motorcycle tour through Scotland, we were able to park our bikes in the courtyard behind the hotel. Our room was a bit small and simple, but good enough for a short stay. Unfortunately, it did not have a wardrobe, so we had to put our bags and clothing on the chairs. The bathroom was also a bit small, but clean and functional. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. We especially enjoyed the freshly prepared breakfast. Recommendable for a short and reasonably priced stay in Anstruther!

The Bank in Neilston is a charming and cozy pub with a view of the harbor. It also offers comfortable rooms, breakfast, and a pleasant beer garden. This community-owned facility provides various amenities such as meeting spaces for hire, a cafe, community garden, bike hub with repairs and training workshop, and public pump/repair station. The food is highly praised by visitors who appreciate the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. The hotel accommodations are spacious and well-equipped for families.
Good choice of Real Ale with large beer garden. Went back for evening meal which was excellent quality at a reasonable price. Dining room has great views over to the sea. Service was friendly and prompt.

Stayed at The Bank for extended golf holiday. Great location for easy access to some of the greatest golf courses in the world. The rooms are very spacious, comfortable and with the usual amenities. The Pub was wonderful and the staff very friendly and eager to please. The Scottish people are so welcoming! Our stay included a hearty breakfast, perfect for a day on the golf course or checking out the local area. The Bank met and exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend.

Great pub, restaurant and B&B close to Anstruther harbour. Friendly staff and excellent rooms in neighbouring building. Tasty meals and plenty of options for breakfast. Would recommend adding haggis to most of the meal options for additional flavour! Limited parking but options nearby for free.

Bowhouse, located in St. Monans, is a market hall housed in a former barn that has become a culinary hotspot in the East Neuk region of Fife. The monthly artisanal food-and-crafts bazaar at Bowhouse attracts visitors seeking seasonally driven bakes and locally produced goods. The establishment aims to connect local producers with customers, shortening the supply chain and creating a community for those passionate about food.
Bowhouse Market weekends are my fav weekends of the year. LOVE the variety and quality of vendors and their wares. Buying from small passionate sellers is an absolute joy. And it’s not full of fake “local” farm produce, like you’d find in some city markets. I come home with bags and bags of delicious food, drinks, beautiful ceramics (a mug a market), and a full belly from the food trucks. You can’t beat it!! I love to visit on both days because there are stalls that are only there for one of the days. Honestly, love love love this market!!!

A good variety of craft, food & drink vendors within a nice venue. Live music is a nice touch. Worth a visit if visiting the popular towns along the fife coast.

Nice unusual place to stop for a break. A very tasty selection of beers amd ciders. Not sure how long it is there for but there was a very large art exhibition ? A few small places to buy different foods within The Bowhouse. Plenty of free parking. Customers toilets were nice and clean.

Very disappointed with our visit. Baern café was shut, only the butcher appeared to be open in the market area, Futtle beer was open but the folk behind the bar didn’t seem interested in us and would same the same for the small kitchen shop. Overall a cold reception from the few places that were actually open. Drove over to Balgove Larder just south of St Andrews which was busy, vibrant, welcoming and absolutely teeming with food & goods to buy.

Went to the farmers market weekend, what a fantastic afternoon we had, the stalls were lovely and all the produce looked so fresh. Bought a sausage roll, as we usually do. They are the best and most filling we've ever had, bacon and chicken was awesome. Definitely worth a visit, the street food and love band made it even better.
Ian P — Google review
Great place for a visit and to sample local produce. There was a large art gallery with works of art for sale during our visit. There is a marketplace with lots of different stalls selling a variety of local fare, food, drink and foodstuffs on at certain times of the month but not on this visit. The permanent shops however, we're open.
Berglas71 — Google review
The cafe presented an intriguing experience. The coffee's unexpected flavor profile, reminiscent of beer, was less than desirable. While the food was adequate, it did not stand out. The available shopping selections were somewhat restricted, leading to a slightly underwhelming overall impression. It is important to note that our visit occurred during a weekday, and the experience may be enhanced during market days.
Andrew F — Google review
Visited on a summer market day, great place to browse and buy from local artists, crafts people and producers. Everything from a bottle of gin, to a artisan sausage roll! The Futtle brewery is great as well (permanent fixture at Bowhouse) we grabbed some beers and all ate from a selection of street food vendors that attend market days.

Terrible! Was given... not served... a tuna mayo roll.... what a joke. It was as flat as a pancake and served on a paper plate . No tomato no salad. Only a flat roll which was frodge cold! Tea served in a paper cup. Avoid. One positive. I got my money back.

Anstruther War Memorial

(1)
Historical landmark
Anstruther War Memorial is located in the Anstruther cemetery and features an unusual design. Situated in the center of a landscaped roundel, this memorial lies flat on the ground and bears a resemblance to the shape of a Celtic cross.
I don’t know what the history is behind this monument other than the obvious. It looks awfully like an ancient beacon or little fort and sits on the golf course at Anstruther opposite a rocky outcrop on the shoreline. Nearest car park is at the golf club but it is for patrons only so you will have to park a little farther afield if you want to visit.

Restaurant
Nestled away from the bustling Main Street in Anstruther, The Cellar is a charming fine dining establishment that exudes an inviting atmosphere, housed in a historic building once used for storing fishermen's nets. This culinary gem offers a singular tasting menu that showcases the best of seasonal Scottish produce and locally foraged ingredients sourced from the stunning East Neuk coastline and its lush countryside.
This is a proper gem. We had a slight issue with service with them accidentally bringing a non GF dish that we hadn’t ordered (when we had allergies in group) but they realised quite quickly and came and apologised. Everything was otherwise absolutely delicious / one of best mead in ages, and the venue is very special. Great for a romantic dinner or a big group.

Our first time at this restaurant was late last year, and it was amazing — delicious tapas, great quality ingredients, and even the Spanish chef came out to chat with us about food from Spain (which we absolutely love and visit whenever we can). But this time… wow, what a disappointment. What happened to that fantastic tapas menu where everything sounded so good you didn’t know what to order first because you wanted it all? Now it’s no longer a tapas place — the menu is small and kind of boring. We asked the waitress a couple of questions about the dishes, but she didn’t seem to know much — not sure if it was nerves or lack of training. The only things worth mentioning were the croquetas and patatas bravas. Everything else was either greasy or just badly done, nothing like the tasty, fresh dishes we had the first time. On top of that, we found it pretty expensive for what we got. It honestly makes me sad to write this, because the place itself is beautiful, and the village is lovely, but unfortunately, none of us who went for dinner that night feel like coming back.
Donna S — Google review
I hate that this review is as bad as I am giving. My starters were lovely. I was asked if we would like desert just after finishing our starters and was met with confusion when I said I’d like my main meal first. We ordered the roast chicken and the belly pork as mains. Twice the chicken came out and was raw and still no sign of the belly pork (a hour after entering the establishment). The chef was having a bad night but should have been conscientious that all the restaurant could hear him swearing. We were the first customers at 6pm on a Saturday so there was no pressure. The young waitress was under prepared for questions about what was in the menu - it’s not huge! I feel she has been given a bad start in hospitality and hope this does not dissolution her. Having ran a pub for several years I feel justified in my review. We were comped our starters and beer which was appreciated but unfortunately on this occasion not a great experience. I do hope this is a one off. The setting is beautiful and it has a huge act to follow.

We ate at The Cellar 24 on Friday 30th May. 4 of us, my wife & I from Kingsbarns with Brother-in-law & wife from Inverness. From the moment we arrived everything was exceptional. A warm and efficient welcome from all the staff who looked after us throughout the evening. The food was delicious. Dish after dish of mouthwatering food. We felt it was good value considering the high standard of food and service. We cannot wait to return.

Ox and Anchor, located in the heart of Anstruther, offers a delightful selection of street food with a modern twist. From their famous bacon and cheese beef smash burger to their lobster sandwich, they use only the finest local ingredients. The menu also includes options like potato hash with sea bass, prawn subs, triple-cooked hand-cut fries, and loaded fries. The establishment started as a van but now has a permanent location where patrons can dine in or take out.
I've been meaning to visit here for ages. Formerly, these awesome folk had a food truck in Pittenweem, but so pleased, they now have a restaurant in Anstruther. I had veggie spring rolls to start with a pretty epic soya sauce dip to accompany it. I then had a burger with haggis, which was pretty outstanding, and shared fries. My girlfriend had the Fish Burger and also loved it. Honestly, it's such an awesome wee place and also a great beer selection, too. Awesome place, great food, and superb service. I definitely will be back.
Scott J — Google review
Last minute decision to try this wee eatery on Sunday and managed to get a table for two. We were informed on arrival that the fries were off the menu as they had none left. Disappointed as wanted to try the dirty fries but there’s always the next time to try them as will definitely be back. The hotdog was fantastic and was very filling and so was the burger. Extremely tasty with multiple ingredients not just a burger and onions on a roll. Also had a side order of very very tasty chicken wings with a bbq sauce and a honey sauce. Don’t be fooled by only having fish and chips when in anstruther, this is the place to go for food.

Been meaning to visit for a while after rave reviews from friends and social media. Lastnight we were not disappointed! Superb food! Easily the best hot dog I've ever had! Flavour combinations of food are delicious and the coating on the cauliflower wings and Mother Clucker burger is awsome! Drinks menu was a nice surprise......enjoyed a classic fave cocktail and my first ale, after some advice from the friendly waiting staff! Will for sure be back! Awsome to have this on our doorstep!

Delicious burgers. We had the dirty Scotsman and the classic ox with fries to share. There's a lot of eating in the burgers , great quality ingredients . Will definitely be back 😀
Charlene D — Google review
Whilst a modestly small venue, the atmosphere and dishes on offer had something for everyone. Travelling up to see my brother, I've been scarce and we said we would have one treat meal in the week and boy did we choose well. The Ox and Anchor had such a nice touch to it that was modern and distinguishable. I absolutely loved the names of the meals on the menu - give that person a raise! 👏 The caffeinated cocktail (according to my brother) didn't taste strong enough for what he ordered according to him, but I was more than happy with my meal, with starters and with drinks on offer. The Dirty Scotsman I believe it was called was absolutely delicious. Recommend a small party as they did well to accommodate all of us at lunch time and maybe give them a decent heads up for 8 pluses. Staff were lovely, toilet very clean and all friendly for the kiddies as well. Thank you all. Our treat meal was fantastic and stuck out as a great memory in Anstruther.

Fantastic food and good choices on menu and a couple of specials which I had buttermilk chicken onion rings bacon jam . Cauliflower wings were delicious. Good choice of local beers and great staff

Fine friendly service. Delicious smashed burger with pulled pork. Dirty chips with large juicy well cooked prawns - so delicious we ordered more! Called in today for lunch after a lengthy dog walk. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered lunch for four and coffees / teas and it was excellent. Without exaggeration - simply the best fish goujon sandwich that I have ever had. The portion size is simply stunning, it was beautifully cooked and cooked to order. Absolutely brilliant. The soup was stunning too. Staff were very friendly and the place is immaculate. Definitely recommend and will return. Was going to take a photo of the sandwich but it was that stunning to look at that I couldn’t wait to start eating!!

We stayed one night at the Waterfront, great rooms, perfect for a short break by the sea and a really nice breakfast. The staff were great and very helpful. Great location in Anstruther right opposite the wee harbour. I left a couple of presents I had bought in a local shop in my room after leaving and the staff very kindly contacted and snd posted the items yo me which I recieved today. Really impressed and really grateful. 👏👏👏

I'd avoid single Room 6 due to lack of natural light and it was very hot although I did enjoy the spacious bathroom, bath and shower. The waist/height window and skylight in the room made my stay uncomfortable, although the bed was very comfortable and the room was well furnished. There was a fan in the cupboard so the heat must be an issue and the fan did little to help. This is not a hotel but a restaurant with rooms at the back. The breakfast was superb and you can have both continental and traditional options, very high standard with table service and no buffet to contend with. The only disappointment was the watery filter coffee, there's an extra charge if you want proper coffee from the machine. I ate in the restaurant on my first night and the venison was delicious. The service was evasive on the Saturday at times, and wonderful after the weekend on my last day. The Monday team were brilliant and made up for the nonchalant attitude of the weekend staff. Breakfast on Monday departure day was the first time I was asked if I had slept well and treated like a guest. Thank you Monday breakfast team, you totally raised the bar and made me feel great, the place was buzzing with strong leadership and energy.

Excellent venue. Staff extremely friendly and attentive. Restaurant is lovely, great location. Nice choices on the menu, I opted for the smoked haddock, oh lovely. If you're in the area don't miss this out.

Husband and I went to Waterfront in Ainster for fish and chips today. It was after 2pm so past lunchtime rush. Gave our order, waited half an hour and no one had been served. Our order was number 8 and by the time order number one was being called the orders were up at order 27. We left. Total shambles. We go there a lot in and out of season but won't be going back. On a grim November day when you have no customers, read this and weep.
Yvonne H — Google review
There is no reception/check in desk so check in in in the restaurant which is expected as this is a restaurant with rooms, not a hotel. The member of staff who showed us to our room was lovely and helpful. We were given a family room for 5 but there was only 3 of us staying (we asked for twin beds). This meant we had plenty of room and even had a small sofa and a chair. There was bunkers and each bunk had an individual TV, although these didn't work (my daughter was a bit disappointed) but the main TV worked so ok. It was a hot couple of days and as we were at the top of the buildjng with very small windows this mrant the room was very hot, even with yhd 2 fans privided on. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and had breakfast on both mornings. The food was lovely although the service on the second morning wasn't great to say the least. I seemed to has upset the waitress somehow as when she served my coffee she slammed the cup, cafetiere and milk jug on the table resulting in the milk spilling on the table and walked away. When I asked for a cloth or something to clean the milk with she was very abrupt and borderline rude like i was being a nuisance. Unfortunately this left a bad impression and I don't think I would return. However I must point out that not all the staff were like this.

Cafe
After a lengthy bus journey from Edinburgh, I sought solace in Bread & Butter Cafe for some comforting food. This establishment did not disappoint, offering a limited yet diverse selection of vegetarian dishes. The quesadilla, although non-traditional, was tasty and portioned perfectly. The rosemary chocolate brownie intrigued me initially but turned out to be delicious as well. It is worth noting that the orange juice may not be completely fresh, potentially carrying a mild fermented taste.
This place is perfect in every way. It's the kind of place you wished you lived around the corner from. We went here for a fueling-up breakfast while on the Fife Coastal Path. Unbelievably delicious food. We were the first there at opening, but the place started getting packed soon after, which tells you all you need to know about the food and service. The women running the place were so lovely. It looks like there are live music nights as well. Very cool place.

Loved this place! The burrito bowl was full of varied tasty items and was very filling too. The rice especially was fantastic, and all the veggies were fresh and seasoned and left me feeling good. I tried the rosemary brownie too (!) and was blown away, you could definitely taste the rosemary and the little sprinkling of salt on top really brought everything together. ALSO the cafe is lovely inside with great tunes, and the staff we spoke to today were friendly and the service was quick! A top notch experience, recommended to everyone!

Came in for lunch after a particularly long bus ride from Edinburgh and was really looking for comfort food - this cafe definitely delivered! The menu is small but has quite a few vegetarian options! I ordered the quesadilla which is not traditional but nonetheless it was good! The portion size is perfect too. I also got the rosemary chocolate brownie (which is not a combination I’ve come across before) and was a bit skeptical but that was delicious too. The orange juice is not 100% fresh in the sense that it was probably squeezed in the morning - just something to be aware of if you are particularly sensitive to fermentation flavour (it is mild, but it’s there!) The service is attentive and helpful!

One of the best brunch’s you’ll find in any city. The coffee is quality along with the homemade bread used for the sandwiches. Better than anything we had in STA or EDI.

A lovely cafe with a chilled vibe and lovely staff. We enjoyed everything we had-the chai latte was so comforting-like a hug in a mug 🤗 The food was all tasty as well, we enjoyed the chicken burrito bowl and the Reuben sandwich. The cakes were good too! We liked it here so much that we had breakfast there, then went for a walk and then came back for more chai lattes!

With the fish and chips we were served oven processed chips, we were told after complaining they had ran out of hand cut chips during lunch service. If we had been told before ordering we would have definitely changed the order. We were still charged full price for both our fish and chips which was disappointing and poor service. As you can see below we also had the scallop starter which was £15 for 2 scallops

Amazing food, I recommend the Vietnamese fish kebab, it was amazing, tender, full of flavour and not overcooked! The scallops were so fresh. We are sitting in one of the tables outdoor under the porch admiring the coast. This is a very special place.

We had a great experience and will definitely return the next time we visit the East Neuk. We sat outside and it was a lovely and peaceful atmosphere. The food (shared starters then main course) was very special, and delicious. Lovely drinks, stunning views. Got 2 x kids fish and chips which were perfect for 8 and 11 year old. The service was friendly, warm and efficient, but we never ever felt rushed. Thank you, and we will be back!

Mostly this a note on reservations. I looked at the website multiple times, and it looked like they were only required for dinner. But when we showed up for lunch, they said it was reservation only. We ate in the outside area. It was ok weather, so it was still a nice lunch. The food is very tasty. But it would have been more pleasant to eat inside. (There's a lot of seaweed flies outside.) I peaked upstairs before and after our meal, the inside dining room was half empty both times. So it wasn't so much a matter of being fully booked. I think it's more that the reservation is just required to sit inside. So long story short -- make reservations for lunch. I think you will enjoy it much more.

We came for lunch and the food was lovely. We had the mackerel pate and the roasted octopus - amazing! For mains we had the whole Lobster Thermidor 🦞 with chips and smoked king prawns 🍤 . The taste was unique on the smoked prawns but the Asian dip was nice 👌🏼. It gets busy so always best to book as they do not take walk ins x The staff are attentive and very friendly x

This is a great place and used to only be open in the summer months. But we went today and had a lively surprise as they are OPEN for Autumn too! Must still be a little.known secret .... cos today is ONLY visit in years when it hasn't been totally jam packed.
