Lake Como, located at the foot of the Italian Alps in Lombardy, is a renowned destination known for its scenic beauty, historic lakeside residences, and mountain vistas. It has been a playground for VIPs with exclusive boutiques and yacht clubs set against picturesque villages. The area has inspired artists and intellectuals throughout history due to its diverse cuisine, natural beauty, and international cultural heritage.
Beautiful place very busy, but you didn't feel pushed. Plenty of places to eat, drink and sit and admire the scenery. Easy to get to from Milan got train 30ish minutes and £27 for two.
Susan J — Google review
Lovely place, lots of tourists but still managed to retain it's charm. We took a train from Milan with a ferry trip included, this was well worth it and we did the tour on the ferry rather than get on get off as we wanted to still have time for Lake Como town before returning to Milan

Absolutely Beautiful and Peaceful! Lake Como is an amazing place to visit. The views are stunning, with mountains, clear blue water, and charming towns all around the lake. It’s a perfect spot to relax, explore, and enjoy nature. The atmosphere is peaceful, the food is delicious, and the people are friendly. Definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been – highly recommended!
Jcy H — Google review
Beautiful views and lovely locals. Weather was wonderful for our visit in early October. Lots of floating wood on the lake, but other than that, quite magnificent.
G — Google review
What a wonderful place. No wonder the rich and famous hang out here. Scenery is second to none. Lots of old buildings if one is into that. Has the largest street market that I have seen. Lots of boats for hire to add to the experience
Randy P — Google review
Magical and beautiful every moment of the day. We will find a vacation home here. The quaint and quietness is so comforting and relaxing. I love hearing the sound of the lake, the boats, the kids, etc.

Lake Como is absolutely breathtaking… from the lake to the sky to the mountains, every view is pure beauty. You have also a ferry that can take to bellagio small town closer to monza.

Italian restaurant
Al Prato Restaurant is a delightful dining spot nestled in the picturesque village of Varenna on Lake Como. The restaurant boasts a menu featuring authentic Italian dishes crafted from locally sourced, fresh ingredients and lake fish. Its inviting ambiance includes outdoor seating for enjoying meals during pleasant weather. Guests can savor delectable offerings such as pumpkin ravioli, sea bass, and rack of lamb, all expertly prepared.
This restaurant doesn’t accept reservations online or by phone. So upon arriving in the enchanting town of Varenna, I immediately left a €100 cash deposit in person to secure a dinner reservation for three nights later. When the evening finally arrived, we were completely blown away by the presentation and flavor of every dish. Service was friendly and attentive. The entire experience exceeded my already high expectations and was easily one of the finest Italian dining experiences I’ve ever had.
Lei L — Google review
Got a table towards the end of lunch without a reservation and it was one of the best (if not best) meals of the trip. The pasta was amazing, with the flavors of the cheese perfectly shining through. Eggplant Parmesan was incredible; everything about it felt elevated. Affogato was a delicious end to the meal. While we didn't need to put down a 100 Euro deposit for a reservation, I wouldn't hesitate to do it. This place is definitely worth it!
Cromulent R — Google review
I was super nervous that I wouldn’t be able to get a table as they don’t accept reservations online or by phone. For dinner, you can secure a reservation for a €100+ cash deposit. I arrived at exactly noon for lunch and despite their signage stating that they were full and stanchions blocking entry, I called over the host and asked for a table for two. He sat us immediately. Despite the restaurant being rather empty, the host did cherry pick who he allowed to dine there. I couldn’t really tell what the requirements were but he seemed to choose tourists that weren’t dressed like tourists, those that greeted him, and those with small parties. If a crowd formed, he would deny everyone lined up. Despite the reviews about the host and staff, they treated us incredibly well, stopping by multiple times to check in and ensure we were enjoying our meals. The food was also good! I got the lamp chops which i’d recommend. If you can’t get in for dinner, try lunch! I highly recommend this restaurant if you’re visiting Varenna.

Sublime and spectacular. We shared the piping-hot melted tomme cheese and grilled vegetable starter. My husband devoured his gorgeous rib-eye steak while I had the sea bass. For dessert? A shared cheesecake topped with crumbled crisp meringue and perfect raspberries. We feel so well fed and cared for.

This restaurant is one of, if not the best restaurants in Varenna. The food was prepared perfectly and presentation was breathtaking. Service excellent. And very reasonably priced
Paul V — Google review
The lamb chops were sooo good!! The bread they served was also fresh and delicious — I especially loved the green one, maybe it had pistachio in it. I’ll definitely visit this restaurant again if I come back to Varenna!
X. X — Google review
Beautiful patio, impeccable service, amazing food! I think you'll almost certainly need a reservation made in person a day or more before. We stopped by on Wednesday to reserve a table for Thursday, and had no trouble. But during dinner we watched everyone without a reservation get turned away! Very worth the effort.
Jared G — Google review
One of the best meals we had in Italy, everything we ordered was a standout dish. Highly recommend the lake fish mains or the tasting platter which came with fish pâté, grilled fish and their smoked local speciality. We also enjoyed the lamb chops and porcini beef lasagna, which were plated wonderfully and packed full of flavour — even the sautéed veggies, potato gratin and small fruits on the side were top-notch! The pavlova and warmed peach cake with ice cream were the perfect sweet notes to end our meal. Really appreciate the service here too. The staff were so kind to seat us even though we arrived 30min before their closing time for lunch, and never rushed us through the meal even past their lunch opening hours. They remained friendly and attentive throughout! Thank you for a great meal here.

Bar Il Molo is a lively lakefront cafe in Varenna, offering an elegant terrace with beautiful views of the lake and town. It provides a variety of casual Italian favorites such as pizza, pasta, panini, salads, and gelato at reasonable prices. The bar is open from morning to late at night and is known for its stunning sunset views over the water.
Bar Il Molo is an absolute gem in Varenna! If you're planning to dine here, make sure to arrive early—the best seats fill up fast, and for good reason. The view overlooking Lake Como is truly breathtaking—one of the most scenic spots we've ever had a meal. We had two perfectly made cappuccinos, pancakes with fresh fruit, and scrambled eggs with bacon. Everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. The service was warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere is hard to beat. Whether you're stopping by for breakfast, brunch, or just a coffee with a view, this place is a must-visit when in Varenna.

Visited this very busy restaurant three times while in the area. For breakfast and two dinners. The staff is busy but quick. The food comes out hot and quickly. Not the greatest meal, but the view makes up for it for any disappointments. It’s worth the visit.

Service was quick and the waiters very attentive. This spot seems to get mixed reviews but we had a wonderful time. Pizza was enjoyable but nothing special. However the real highlight is that this is THE BEST spot in Varrena for a sunset drink, if you get lucky enough to have one of the frontline tables!

Don't be fooled by the tiktok videos. The location is nice but looks better on video. There's not much in Varenna and this restaurant has a good location which gives it an advantage. The food and service is average. I ordered the salmon breakfast and it is something that I could make at home easily. For the views and the price, I think it is reasonable.
Alexi L — Google review
Good restaurant near the lake. Good food. Fresh orange juice was a good choice (freshly squeezed). They served the food and drinks really fast. The staffs were friendly, and helpful, but some of them looked tired. Toilet for customers is available.
Marta D — Google review
The lavender cocktail didn’t taste like lavender at all. The waiter was the rudest I’ve ever encountered — literally scolding customers and making us feel tense just to ask for something, as if we should apologize for ordering. His attitude was truly unacceptable. The pinsa was quite ordinary. However, the place has an absolutely stunning view. I’d say come here just for the scenery, not for the food or the service.
Elif G — Google review
Absolute worst food I’ve ever had point blank period. Which is crazy to say for being in Italy. The food including the salad was all either canned food and sauce or they were playing a practical joke. I have gotten better food from a Wawa.
David M — Google review
The drinks were decent, coffee was nice. They came along with chips and pistachio. Most important that everything, the terrace and view was fantastic. Definitely recommend. By the way, be aware of the pigeons and sparrows, if you feed them once and jump into your dish in groups 😄

Villa Monastero is a historic waterfront mansion located in the Province of Lecco, boasting terraced gardens adorned with statues. The villa is a major attraction due to its rich history, picturesque landscape, and various services offered on the premises. The House Museum within the estate showcases opulent 1800s decor across 14 fully furnished rooms, providing visitors with an immersive experience. Additionally, the villa houses a renowned Conference Centre that has hosted physics lessons by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi.
Beautiful villa with awesome picture opportunities along the lakeside. The garden is very beautiful. Staff is great. We had tickets and were standing in the line, upon showing them to staff they let us through the side. The staff at the museum was also great, showing us what the best route was etc. parking on the other side of the street is good (for Lake Como standards :))

The gardens are absolutely stunning and the views of Lake Como are unreal — definitely a must-visit for photo lovers! Dress cute, this place is made for dreamy pics. We bought tickets online and skipped the line. The villa interior isn’t super impressive, but the outdoor beauty makes it 100% worth it.

Easily one of the most beautiful places I've been. There was a crowd (we visited in September), but it was manageable and didn't bother us too much. Entry was quick and efficient and for 7 euro (13 for regular entry but still) you get access to arguably the most gorgeous views you would have seen in your life.
Teo N — Google review
This is truely a lovely villa. The setting on the north end of Varenna is perfectly quiet. Property is between the road and Lake Como allowing for a magical stroll along the water. The property seemed a little worn. After a couple of days of train the paths suffered from large puddles making passage distracting on some portions. Other features were closed for repairs. The house was a treat and more intimate than some of the other villas we visited. Be sure to visit the exhibit room under the where you'll get your tickets and enter property. They have a fine audio and visual show that allows you to chose topics on the family and property history of the villa as well as the garden and it's flora. We visited in the second half of September but I can imagine Villa Monastero in blume is just amazing.
John V — Google review
nice place. if you want to walk through the garden, it is worth spending 2 hours. there is a queue at the popular places to take pictures and you can't even look at it if you don't wait. difficult with a stroller. It's worth going in the morning, there's no line, there are fewer people
Eva V — Google review
One word – magnificent. I recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid waiting. We arrived at 10 a.m. and waited about 20 minutes in line. The villa opens at 10:00 a.m. They allow only a limited number of visitors inside, which is great because it’s not overcrowded. The ticket costs €10
Anh N — Google review
This is the most beautiful place I have ever been on Earth and I mean that. Wow just wow. The gardens are incredibly stunning and well kept and I probably took hundreds of photos here. Do not skip this place if you are in Varenna and spend some time here I promise it’s worth it!!! So much gorgeous scenery it felt like I was inside a pinterest board. If you are walking here from where the ferry drops you off make sure to walk along the path right next to the water with the red fence for some of the best views of the lake and then at the end head up one of the streets/stairs to get to the villa entrance.

We had a fabulous day at Villa Monastero, where every inch felt intentionally designed and beautifully maintained. The atmosphere was serene and tranquil, with stunning architecture all around—the elegant pillars, soaring arches, and vibrant flower displays made it a feast for the eyes. We visited in mid-June, when the temperature reached 34°C, yet there were plenty of shaded spots to pause and enjoy the scenery. One of our favourite moments was sitting at a picnic bench under the shade, having some snacks while taking in the spectacular lake views. The café on site offers refreshments, and there is one toilet for each gender. Both were beautifully prepared and spotless, which was a welcome detail. The combination of breathtaking views, peaceful atmosphere, and architectural beauty made Villa Monastero a truly memorable experience. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe, and simply enjoy the beauty of Lake Como. Kids go free

ALMA is a waterfront cafe with a relaxed atmosphere and a variety of pasta options, along with the refreshing limoncello. While reservations are not required, there might be a wait for a table due to its popularity. The sharing meat and cheese platter is presented beautifully and offers fresh bread rolls. Although slightly pricey, the quality justifies the cost. Customers often leave with pizza boxes due to the generous portions.
I cannot recommend this restaurant enough! The lemon risotto and veal cheeks were the best food we had in our entire Italy stay. (Skip the pasta here!) The servers were all friendly and joked around with us ending our night with complimentary limenchello shots and an entire bottle of prosecco when they were closing up for the night. On top of the food and fun, the view here is stunning. The swans 🦢 visit this spot regularly making the entire experience truly magical! Thank you to the servers who made this night such a memorable one!
Sarah K — Google review
The view is beautiful, but that’s pretty much all this place has going for it. The $30 USD cheese plate tastes as horrible as it looks, the “focaccia” is just pizza dough with no sauce, and the pesto pasta is swimming in oil
Sneha J — Google review
The view of the lake is truly beautiful, but unfortunately the food doesn’t live up to it. Nothing tasted fresh, and the menu lacks even basic salad options. Most of the dishes felt assembled, not cooked. In response to the owner’s reply: Leaving a review isn’t exactly the ‘easier’ option. It takes time and intention to share honest feedback, not just for other guests but for businesses that are open to reflection and growth. A professional response would have acknowledged that instead of making assumptions. I hope in the future they choose to take reviews like this as constructive feedback.

!Be careful! Atmosphere (4/5) - Really good location, serene vibe and one of the best locations you wish to eat at Food (1/5) - Really bad food. Everything tasted pretty-heated and nothing was fresh. We ordered Lasagne, a pasta. Lasagne was cold and I couldn’t eat more than two bites. Hoping their Pizza could be good, I asked for Margarita with Olivies and they said they don’t have olivies. Someone sitting next to us advised us to not order pizza. Extremely disappointing! Service - They are quick in their service, however extremely cold. They won’t look at you while taking order and just push the food at your table. My request to the owner would be to elevate your food quality. You have such a wonderful location, all for waste.

The food was typically amazing, great service but the atmosphere was lacking as it had many plants blocking the way. We ordered meatballs, risotto, and pasta ragu. It was very flavourful and had a great use of tomato sauce.

We had an amazing dinner at Alma Restaurant — the fresh squid ink tonnarelli with seafood and the fresh tagliolini with fine black truffle were absolutely delicious! The restaurant is right on the lake, making it a beautiful and romantic setting — perfect for a date. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for great food and a stunning lakeside atmosphere.

Albergo del Sole Ristorante Pizzeria is a charming hotel with picturesque views of the lake and mountains. The restaurant offers a delightful selection of Larian cuisine, including lake fish specialties and authentic Neapolitan pizza. I went to this restaurant yesterday and it honestly exceeded my expectations! The food was delicious, beautifully prepared, and full of amazing flavors. Every dish was made with fresh ingredients, and you could tell there was real skill behind it. But what really made the experience special was the service: Abdul, our waiter, was absolutely fantastic. Polite, friendly, and very knowledgeable—he recommended the best dishes and checked on us throughout the meal with a warm smile. Honestly, Abdul is the best waiter in the restaurant – attentive to every detail and made us feel completely at home.

During our 5 day holiday we had dinner here twice! Prices are very reasonable and the service is great. Waiters were very lovely and accommodating. Food tastes amazing and it had good portions. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Varenna!

My wife and I visited this restaurant in 2012 and had a great meal. So on our return to Varenna in Sept. 2025, regardless of the mediocre Google rating, we went there again. Del Sole did not disappoint, and in fact we had a delicious meal. The service was good, the ambiance a bit crazy due to a huge all-in thunderstorm, but ultimately the quality of the food was excellent. (Google won’t allow me to give it a 4.5!) Thoroughly enjoyed our return visit and highly recommend.

We visited this restaurant for dinner and were truly impressed! The place is warm and cozy, with a calm and pleasant atmosphere. The dishes were tasty, beautifully presented, and you could really taste the quality of the ingredients in every bite. The service was excellent, and I want to give a special shout-out to Abdul, who was without a doubt the best waiter of the night. Always kind, attentive, and professional—he looked after us perfectly and gave great recommendations that made our evening even better. A wonderful place we’ll definitely return to. Thanks to the whole team, and especially to Abdul for his outstanding service!

Just had a delightful lunch here. Husband had lasagna- the sauce was rich and meaty. I had the salad with shrimp. Everything was fresh. Service was more prompt than expected and they were busy. One gentleman seemed to be overlooking how the servers were doing and kept everything running smoothly. Thanks guys for a good lunch!

Best Food! Best Value! Best Patio Vibe. We sampled multiple dining options during our 3 days around Lake Como. We happened on this place late one evening. The fried calamari is the best we have found in our 40 years of travel. If you have a multi-day trip, don't eat here first. It will cause you to be disappointed in the other restaurants...
Bret M — Google review
It is very conveniently located, and the place is for tourists. It deserves beyond the current rating because some negative reviews with one star seem not correct. The restaurant did not provide tap water. See the information printed on the water bottle. The price was reasonable, so the visitors should expect that level of service. The staff did what they were supposed to do, and service was up to the expected level. Pasta and chicken we ordered were good enough. There are some 'warning' instructions, but considering the price range, it is understandable. (I can guess how much the owner/managers suffered from previous 'free-riding' guests.) The restaurant staff provided us enough time to relax and stay at the restaurant. I feel this restaurant is not overpriced (considering its location) and functioning decently.
Suhheechoi — Google review
There is a 2.5 euro cover charge but I think this is definitely not the kind of restaurant that can charge a cover charge. They serve water in glass water bottles with their logos on them, which means they put tap water in it and the water costs 4 euros and if you can't finish the water you paid 4 euros for, you can't take your bottle and leave (there was no water/price on the menu either). I ordered steak, the meat was good, they cook meat well everywhere in Italy anyway, as a restaurant in a very touristic Italian town, in the main square, their attitude is eat quickly, go, new customers will come. They put a blackboard on a stool at the open entrance of the restaurant. It says: you can't just order a drink, you have to order food as well. In other words, the attitude is very touristic restaurant attitude but the prices are higher quality, local, genuine venue prices.

Northern Italian restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Varenna, Osteria Quatro Pass is a charming restaurant that offers a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The menu showcases traditional northern Italian cuisine, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Guests can savor homemade pasta, fresh seafood, and lake fish dishes amid the restaurant's stone walls and vaulted ceilings. With both indoor and outdoor seating options available, it's recommended to make reservations in advance to secure a table at this popular eatery.
Lovely food and service. We went to the restaurant early when it opened and was able to get a table for 5 people immediately with no wait. The duck main dish was absolutely exceptional. The grilled octopus (Catalan style) and grilled vegetables (side dish) were also excellent. Our waitress spoke perfect English, was very friendly and professional. All Aperitif drinks were great too.

Was craving for fish and seafood and so happy we found this place! A little on the pricier side but worth it. Food was fresh and yummy and the rabbit pasta was one of my husband’s favorite dish in our trip to Italy (so far)

Delicious meal! A must go to for Varenna. Also fantastic service. Everything we had was amazing. Rabbit ragu was delicious with a unique flavor profile. Pumpkin gnocchi a unique a delicious dish, perfect for fall. Duck breast was cooked to perfection. Also we had the dark chocolate dessert which was the perfect ending. I recommend making a reservation. Came at 8pm and was lucky a table opened up!

Unfortunately my meat was not medium (the picture makes it look much redder than it was I realise). Overall good service and nice vibe. But of course it’s a touristy city so cannot compare it (price wise) to other Italian locations.

Osteria Quatro Pass was a great find. Our Airbnb host recommended it, and it was the ideal place to stop after a relaxing walk around Lake Como. The restaurant has a really nice, cozy feel, and we felt comfortable as soon as we walked in. It was exactly what we needed for a quiet evening. The food was definitely the highlight. We tried their special Lasagna, and it was seriously amazing. It had a unique, smoky flavor that made it the best lasagna I've ever had. We also ordered the Sauteed Duck Breast. I was hesitant at first, but the staff assured us it was juicy and different, and they were right—it was excellent. The staff was super helpful and clearly knew their menu well. We also got the White Rabbit Tagliatelle. The pasta was cooked perfectly, but after the lasagna and the duck, it just didn't stand out as much for us. You absolutely cannot skip the Tiramisu, though. It was a perfect ending to our dinner and a great way to wrap up our trip to Como. Highly recommend checking this place out.

Beautiful interior of old stone work. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We ordered the beef tartare that was a good portion but not a lot of flavor. My wife ordered the lasagna that was on the special…it tasted like it looked- dry. I ordered a special pasta with rabbit. The pasta was cooked to perfection but the rabbit and sauce lacked flavor to that of a traditional Italian rabbit dish that I grew up eating as child from the Island of Ischia. My girls split an order of ravioli filled with eggplant and they both finished their portion. The star of the night in appearance and flavor was the apricot cheese cake- the building and structure was beautiful but the food was a let down.

Al Barilott is a charming local coffee shop that opens early at 7am, making it perfect for early risers. The friendly servers create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for both tourists and locals. The coffee is highly recommended, especially when paired with their delightful pastries like pistachio croissants and raisin twists. This cozy spot offers an authentic Italian experience with its delicious food and infectious good mood.
Had a tuna sandwich & cappuccino after spending a day wondering around Bellagio and Varenna. The staff lady was so attentive, friendly and welcoming. They also have a toilet that can be used for customers. Definitely will come back!

Delicious authentic paninis with a lot of different options. Seems like a local spot where many local workers were eating. Way more recommended to eat there than the other over priced restaurants nearby that aren’t even very good. Service was great too and there are tables outside where you can sit and eat.

Best cappuccino! Great panini and delicious croissants. Highly recommend as your daily coffee stop when visiting Varenna! Beautiful views from the outdoor seating … or stand at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere of this lovely bar / cafe! Highly recommend.

A great spot for a quick stop to enjoy good coffee and pastries. Highly recommend trying their pistachio croissants!

Very good and tasty sandwiches. We ate Monastero and Barilott, both were great. Prices are also reasonable considering the size and quality. 😊

I truly enjoyed my breakfast at this charming spot. The ham focaccia exceeded my expectations with its flavor and quality, while the coffee and pistachio croissant were simply outstanding. The cozy atmosphere made me feel like I was experiencing an authentic Italian breakfast. I would definitely recommend this place.

This is where we used our breakfast vouchers from nearby Fio&Gio. After we got our complementary Cappuccino and pistachio cornetti-one of us chose muesli, we went back to our accommodation and sat on the roof terrace; although, Al Barilott is located in a small piazza where you sit at an outside table and enjoy views of a nearby church and clock tower, as well as Lake Como and the mountains surrounding the lake. The ladies running the place were so gracious and helpful, and they also had a delicious looking homemade jam filled cake. If we had stayed longer than one night, I could see returning here another day.

For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. Not quite as popular as Villa Monastero, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Botanical garden
Villa Carlotta is a stunning 17th-century villa located on the shores of Lake Como, near the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The villa boasts beautiful gardens and a remarkable botanical park with an impressive variety of rhododendrons and azaleas. Commissioned by Marquis Giorgio II Clerici, it features a neoclassical style with works by renowned artists such as Canova, Tiepolo, and Hayez.
Took the train to Varenna, then the boat and got off at Lenno. From Lenno we hiked to the villa following the lake shore (approx 4 km) This is a great hike, easy to make and not exhaustive. The only caveat is that there is a section of the hike that follows the road. Visited on Monday. Started with the gardens as there was a storm cloud on the lake and wanted to cover the gardens and move inside if the rain moved onto the place. The gardens are extensive and beautiful. The rhododendrons were in peak bloom (mid May). The Villa itself is also impressive, well curated and maintained. Overall a great small museum as a time capsule ot a different era. The cafeteria has gelato, panini and excellent beer. What else do you need beyond that. We entered the museum at 3:00 pm and left just after 6:pm. The combined ticket for the gardens and the villa is €15/p. Good value.

Nice museum with several exhibits. Also has gorgeous views of lake como. There is also a restaurant to grab some lunch. It was not crowded when we visited also there was no line to buy tickets. Worthwhile visiting the villa.

An absolute architectural, botanical and historical marvel of the last 500 years. The grounds of the villa are absolutely gorgeous - fountains sculptures, and perfectly manicured floral heaven. The garden is truly remarkable with how much variety of plants there are and also the way it's been maintained. For the building itself, nothing short of extraordinary - the design and architecture is impressive. There is so much history and craftsmanship behind this place.

Inside and out Villa Carlotta was a joy to visit. We loved the art work inside the villa. Be sure o look up as many of the rooms are adorned with frescos and or reliefs. The grounds are a botanical wonder with species brought in from around the world.

I have no words. Grand, classy, green. Bamboo plants, very tropical. The great beauty of a sea of over 150 species of plants. All this is combined with the view of Lake Como, which is open from almost every point of Villa Carlotta. Very good restaurant.

Must see! Great place to visit, beatiful inside, many sculpture, paintings few rooms with furniture with very great conditions. Amaizing garden around, it takes 2-3 hours to visit and see all villa and garden. Beautyful view from balcony for Como lake.
Arkadiusz K — Google review
Villa Carlotta was beautiful (the villa, gardens, and views) and informative. I decided to get the audio guide as well and I'm very happy I did. It made walking through the gardens more immersive and, at some points, even had me emotional. The gardens can be strenuous in certain points from multiple steps and steeper climbs but the shade provided a lot of nice cover from the hot Italian sun. Additionally, the property has three different routes available: whole, quick, and wheelchair accessible. The Villa itself is full of history and allows you to see artworks and historical preservation. Will be a historical place I visit again next time I am in Lake Como.

Great place to visite. We even met a nice photographer who offer us free service. The villa is very BIG. Take your time to visit. Maybe 3 hours for everything. Most of the visit part is in the garden. They also have absolutely nice views.

Extended stay hotel
Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a luxurious hotel located in Bellagio, Italy. The hotel offers elegant rooms and a range of upscale amenities including a spa, bars, and two restaurants. Guests can also enjoy the hotel's pools and access to a private beach on the lake. The property has an interesting history and is currently owned by the Rockefeller Foundation, serving as a creative retreat for artists, writers, and scientists.
Our stay at this magnificent villa on Lake Como was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the impeccable service and the dedication of the entire staff. The interiors are absolutely stunning — refined, elegant, and perfectly in line with the timeless charm of the villa. The restaurant deserves special mention: the cuisine was exquisite, every dish a delight, and the cocktail menu in the bar was both creative and sophisticated. We were also touched by the thoughtful birthday celebration, which made our experience even more memorable. The service was flawless throughout the day. The waiters, dressed in white stockings and bow ties from morning until evening, brought an exceptional sense of refinement and harmony that perfectly matched the villa’s interiors and atmosphere. If there was one slight disappointment, it was the attitude of some fellow guests. Unfortunately, many did not follow the dress code recommendations that had been clearly communicated at the time of booking. It was a shame, as this lack of consideration diminished the otherwise consistent sense of elegance and exclusivity of the place. Overall, however, our experience at this villa was absolutely outstanding — a true example of luxury hospitality at the highest level.
Marina N — Google review
I had such high expectations staying at Villa Serbelloni, but unfortunately the experience was very underwhelming. The one thing that is truly outstanding is the location, it is absolutely beautiful and cannot be faulted. However, for a five-star property, the service and staff experience fell far short. Coming from a five-star hotel in Switzerland just before this stay, the contrast was stark. At Villa Serbelloni, there was no real sense of welcome or warmth, often no greeting, no effort to make you feel special. For example, when sitting by the pool, not even being offered complimentary water when towels are handed out felt surprising and completely unacceptable for a hotel of this level. The staff were not rude, but they were also far from attentive, polished, or genuinely welcoming. And that’s what makes the difference between a hotel simply having five-star facilities versus delivering a true five-star experience. I had been looking forward to this as one of the highlights of our European trip, but sadly it ended up being one of the most disappointing. If what you want from a five-star stay is to feel valued, wowed, and taken care of, this is not the place.

We had an amazing two-day stay at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni for our honeymoon, and it was truly unforgettable! ❤️ Everything was perfect — the warm hospitality, the breathtaking lake view, and the elegant atmosphere. The hotel beautifully combines classic charm with modern comfort, making it a magical and romantic experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an exceptional stay in Lake Como! ✨

My wife and I recently completed a five-night stay at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni as part of our honeymoon and could not be happier with the experience. The property is stunning, pictures and descriptions simply do not do it justice, and the staff could not have been kinder or more attentive. While Bellagio itself can feel crowded with visitors during the day, the hotel is a serene oasis, allowing guests to enjoy the town at its best in the calm of the mornings and evenings. Our stay was flawless, and we are already looking forward to returning.

By far the best hotel in Bellagio. From the Michelin-starred Mistral restaurant to the elegant rooms, private beach club, and even the famous diving board, every detail is exceptional. The privacy of the property makes it feel truly exclusive, as only guests can enter past the gate. Service was outstanding — Claudio and Luca were especially memorable, and the young gentleman (Claudio’s friend) at Mistral made our dining experience even more special. An unforgettable stay.
Julian S — Google review
We had an amazing time at this hotel. We were there to celebrate my husband’s birthday and the hotel provided some special touches for the occasion. The lake view rooms are breathtaking, the location stunning and eating in the Mistral restaurant on site is a must. This hotel is spectacular and the staff and service was impeccable. Thank you for making our stay so special

On July 27th I had the pleasure of visiting the Grand Hotel in Bellagio — beautifully located, with wonderful hospitality and excellent ceviche. As I was leaving Bellagio, I was unfortunately in a hurry and didn’t have the chance to thank in person the gentlemen at the entrance, whose kindness and warm conversation added an unexpectedly human touch to my visit. Please extend my sincere appreciation to them.

The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni: Redefining hospitality and comfort As a hotel with 5 stars, it shouldn’t surprise you that the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is known for its high quality dining, pool and lakeside amenities, and beautiful estate. But the reason this hotel is number one on our list in every category is the people who elevate your experience day in and day out. Over the two weeks our family stayed at the Grand Hotel Villa, the high standard set and met by the dedicated and hard working staff was prevalent each and every day. From the concierge, to the waiters, to the pool staff, to the cleaners, the kindness and commitment of this staff team to create a comfortable and welcoming environment made our experience a 10/10. We became especially close with and Annabel, Giuseppe, Samuele, Anna, Emilio, and Oumo, whose hospitality and service made our days on the lake unforgettable. Whether it’s food, facilities, or people, this hotel gets all high marks. Thank you to the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni staff for the lifelong memories.

I Giardini di Villa Melzi, located in Bellagio, Italy, is a stunning botanical garden surrounding the 19th-century neo-classical mansion of Villa Melzi d'Eril. The garden features picturesque trails, statues, pavilions, and breathtaking views of Lake Como. While the villa itself is not open to the public, visitors can explore the serene botanical gardens and capture its beauty through leisurely strolls or specialized tours.
This place is mesmerizing. Happy by just walking around the garden and taking few pictures. There are two exits. You can go out and return by asking the staff to stamp on your wrist. There’s entrance near the port, very easy to walk to this place. We did not buy the ticket in advance since we saw the notice in the booking website that we need to be in line to get ticket anyway. Luckily, there was no queue, I believe because we visited during weekday in the afternoon (Oct 6). Not too many people there. Recommend!

It’s a very beautiful garden right on the lake. I don’t mind paying 10€ just to walk through the park because it does take some work to maintain the garden. It’s a nice place, there’s a museum too. However you cannot enter the main villa and it’s just not that amazing overall. It’s still a great place to be away from the touristy centro of Bellagio

Nice place to stroll in Bellagio! The garden is super well-kept and even has tropical plants like banana trees 🍌🍌🍌 Great for photos, an afternoon walk, or just to chill after lunch. Worth a visit if you’re around!

Beautiful place for a 45-60 minute walk, to have the full experience. Nice walking paths along the garden with various plants and trees. All this goes along the Como lake waterfront.

Opening hours are daily 10 am to 6:30 pm. The gardens are closed in the winter time. In 2025 it will close on Oct 31st and will reopen in March 2026. Cost is 10€ you buy tickets at the gates. 2 gates entry one on each side. Located in the town of Bellagio on lake como. Parking is limited as the town of Bellagio is very popular in the summer.

The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and so well cared for. Everywhere you look, there’s beautiful greenery and an incredible variety of trees. It’s such a peaceful, stunning place to walk through. If you’re visiting Bellagio, this is a must see. I highly recommend making time for a visit.

Gorgeous gardens with different small hiding places and paths. Beautiful scenery, amazing views, you can really unwind and soothe your soul here. If you're into gardens you can't miss this one. If you're not so much into gardens, you should still visit this one.

Villa Melzi is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. The gardens are immaculate, peaceful, and filled with stunning colors, especially in spring. Every path reveals something new—ancient trees, vibrant flowers, classical statues, and breathtaking views of the lake. The atmosphere is serene and elegant, perfect for a relaxing stroll or quiet reflection. The neoclassical villa adds a timeless charm, and the small museum and chapel offer fascinating historical insight. The combination of nature, art, and history is truly unique. It felt like walking through a living painting.

Il Cavatappi is a charming trattoria located in an alley near the main square of Varenna, Lombardy. The restaurant offers a variety of European, Italian, and Mediterranean dishes including pasta, seafood, and vegetarian options. With its modest ambiance and creatively plated regional dishes, Il Cavatappi provides an authentic taste of Italian cuisine. Visitors can also enjoy outdoor seating along the water while savoring their meals.
We sat in the covered alleyway just outside the restaurant, enjoying a delicious dinner accompanied by the warm breeze from the lake. The food was both flavourful and beautifully presented, and the service was attentive and genuinely pleasant. I had made the reservation the day before by visiting the restaurant in person and leaving an €80 cash deposit — a practice that seems fairly common in Varenna. For a restaurant of this quality, I wouldn’t hesitate to put cash down again.

Food was good and tasty, quick to come out as well. Didn’t wait long for a table but there were 2 hairs in my food, the waitress immediately ordered another one for me. Had to order a drink though, wouldn’t let me just order food. Atmosphere 3 due to no view. Nice menu, has wifi and toilet.

Incredible food! Lunch / dinner slots fill up fast! Food here was very good. The octopus starter was to die for. One of my favorite starters I’ve ever had. Best octopus dish. It was cooked perfect and tasted amazing. Went well with the chickpea purée underneath. So delicious. The gnocchi was delicious as well. Cooked perfect. The lamb shank was huge and great. Service was good as well. The guy was very nice and friendly! Super great server to have

My wife and I went to Il Cavatappi on our very first night in Italy as part of our honeymoon, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals we’ve ever had. We did all four courses and stayed for about two and a half hours—it was perfect. The servers were so kind, fun, and welcoming, which made the evening even more special. We arrived early without a reservation and were lucky to get a table outside, but I highly recommend making a reservation. Don’t be fooled by the line at the neighboring spot—this is where you want to eat. The food was outstanding: the creamiest, freshest burrata, incredible pasta, and perfectly cooked lamb. We shared a bottle of delicious wine from Cascina Chicco, and everything paired beautifully. The atmosphere outside in the center of Varenna was magical—great for people-watching and just soaking in the town. Il Cavatappi is truly a gem, and we can’t wait to return on our next trip to Varenna. Absolutely unforgettable.

My wife and I ate here when we stayed in Varenna this past May. We had the meat and cheese board followed by the pasta with Duck Ragu accomplices by a lovely Barolo. We were in Italy for 23 days and this one of our highlights. The food was fresh and flavourful and the location with the tables set right along the narrow street is magical. I will be chasing that Duck Ragu flavour for a while.

Me and my wife had our honeymoon meal in Il Cavatappi. We were welcomed without a reservation and the service from the moment you enter is impeccable. We decided to have the Caprese salad to start which was wonderful. The stand out of the evening however was the highly recommended lamb shank with berries. It falls off the bone and is the best meal I've had since being in Italy. My wife had the lemon ravioli which was bursting with lemon flavour and obviously skillfully made. I felt like every place I'd been to in Varenna and Belaggio up until that point was a little tourist trap, however Il Cavatappi felt different. It felt as if we were somewhere special, somewhere we'd been looking for. It really was worth the hype.

Ristorante Borgovino is a hidden culinary gem tucked away in the narrow streets near the lakeside promenade. The restaurant offers a unique menu featuring typical fish specialties from the lake and mountains, with vegetarian options always available. Guests have praised the amazing service, affordable prices, and delicious food, including lasagna, specialty pasta cooked in red wine, perfectly prepared filet, and delectable desserts.
This is located in a picturesque alley slightly hidden away from the busy streets. The server was very welcoming and the food was amazing!!! You have to try their ‘secret pasta’ and the lasagna. You can tell the food was made fresh to order and was well priced! Great find in Varenna.

Great food even though it was a little small... Nice place with a nice owner. Only thing for us was that the water seemed to be tap water, and was charged $2,50 for the bottle.
Pedro M — Google review
The inside of this restaurant is nicely decorated and has good AC (we came mid-July). We tried the local fish dish and the pasta with mussels. Both were very good and reasonably priced. The owner and staff were all very nice. I definitely recommend coming here.
Amelia A — Google review
This was a very small place, a little cozy but very full with stuff. We tried a variety of dishes and many were pre-made and reheated, meaning the bowl or plate was very hot and the dish was cold in several spots, this is completely unacceptable and made us feel disrespected at the highest level, I cannot fathom an Italian restaurant that reheats food. I cannot recommend this place, I would rather stay hungry than eat here again, a complete tourist trap.

A hidden gem in the city. Amazing service, food, and wine. Very affordable, but with a unique menu and an excellent chief. We had lasagna, pasta, filet (perfect rare), and a desert similar to a baked Alaska. Such an amazing experience. A must try. The views may not be of the water, but they are amazing just the same. Excuse the filet picture, as I was too hungry to wait. Of note, email for a reservation as it helps.

One word-----terrible. It's like they cooked the food for the first time ever, pasta was like dough with a bucket of cheese, risotto was like eating a block of unmelted cheese, their secret pasta was nothing more than pasta with cheap wine, cabbage and lots of cheese. Very nice servers.

The food was good. Cozy atmosphere if you eat outside. The gentleman was quite rude at first but warmed up once we chatted with him. He gave us limoncello as a thank you. We did not have reservations and snagged a table as it opened and watched them turn people away.

Probably the worst food we had on our three week vacation in Italy. We had the special meat lasagna, which had uncooked pieces on the outside and cold areas on the inside. The cheese used for the lasagna was also a weird almost liquid milk type thing. The gnocchi was too soft and also had a weird sauce. The steak was cooked well, but again a weird sauce. Overall would not recommend

Bistrot Antichi Sapori is a charming and timeless place with a cozy and intimate atmosphere, surrounded by flowers, plants, and architectural elements. It's one of the most popular restaurants in Como, offering delicious breakfast, lunch specials during weekdays, and dinner. The bistro serves a variety of Italian dishes from pasta to salads with large and affordable portions. The focus is on showcasing the importance of food in Italian tradition.
We ordered the ham/artichoke pizza and the Truffle pasta. The pizza was good, not the best but tasty. But the star of the show was the Truffle pasta, absolutely delicious. We also had very good service and the prices was fair for Bellagio. Would recommend to go here. We also could get seat right away, while restaurant next door had a line.

We stopped here for lunch while visiting Bellagio. My daughter and I had the pasta bolognese and it was very tasty. My wife ordered a salad with shrimp. My mother enjoyed the minestrone soup- it was a very large portion. And my son had the spaghetti with garlic and hot pepper. He enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoyed the house red wine- a great value. I’d come back again.

We ordered the spaghetti carbonara, mixed salad, fries and the ham artichoke pizza. Carbonara was very salty, hard to eat. Fries and salad were good. pizza was just ok. Friendly service.

I had one of the best diavolo pizza here, it tasted fantastic, loved it, same for the pasta. The place is quit busy but we received our order pretty quickly. The price was similar to surrounding restaurants, fully recommended place to eat 😉 One extra toilet would be nice to avoid the queue, but this is just a note.

Amazing! Very fast service, we waited in a queue that was looking a bit long but it was also moving very quick. We ordered two pastas, two spritzs and tiramisu - til this day I thought I didn't liked tiramisu. It was delicious. The prices are reasonable for a place that beautiful!🥰🥰🥰

This is hands down the best restaurant we ate at on the entire lake Como, and we stayed here 2 weeks trying a different restaurant everyday. Don’t be deterred by the simple decor of this place. It really is a hidden gem in the corner of an ally, with the best service and food we had. The carbonnara is by far the best authentic carbonara (guanciale and pecorino) on the lake for a great price. We also had the steak, tomato pasta, Parma ham bruschetta, blueberry and talleggio (amazing) pasta, and seafood pasta as well as the bresaola pizza and all were remarkable! We came back on our last night for my birthday and the entire team came out to sing me a very loud and enthusiastic happy birthday, it made my day 😊. Thank you to everyone who was working on the night of August 29th 😁

La Terrazza Lake Como is a captivating dining destination that promises an unforgettable experience with its breathtaking views of the lake. The restaurant features a bright and inviting atmosphere, perfect for enjoying exquisite meals crafted by a talented chef who emphasizes seasonal ingredients. Guests can indulge in gourmet dishes made from fresh, organic produce, including locally sourced fish and artisanal cheeses.
We sat on the veranda overlooking Lake Como. The food was a work of art and the tastes matched the appearance. The caprese was next level delicious and fresh. The beef dish melted in my mouth with perfect flavors. I would eat here everyday if I could.

Food very subpar and expensive, portions are small. The view is amazing, highly recommend going before sunset! We had eggplant, risotto, ravioli and lobster. They brought quite a few different breads to start, which were all very good. However, the courses themselves were pretty average at best with a massive price tag. If you can sit right against the window, the view is unobstructed and gorgeous. The service was good until the end - for some reason after declining dessert, it took the wait stuff 20-30 minutes to bring us the bill. Overall, not worth the price and tons of great place locally with better food, portions and price tag! Only benefit here is the view.

One of the single best restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. We did the tasting menu and were blown away. Diverse flavors, things I had never tried, incredible service, etc. I highly recommend reserving a table.

The food IS expensive, no doubt about that; however the quality is incredible, extremely enjoyable atmosphere in arguably one of the most premium locations on the lake. I would personally recommend the lamb and risotto; both with incredibly rich flavour. My partner was particularly fond of the spaghetti salad. Amazing experience, incredible staff, very much enjoyed.

Enjoyed a tasting dinner and wine pairing with friends at Albori. It was incredible. Food and service were exceptional. The view of the lake along with the creative dishes and knowledgeable staff made it a night to remember.

Laughable portions for the price of one month’s mortgage on a 3 bed home. Food was very bland. They closed the veranda and put us in an obstructed view so it made the entire experience pointless. Service was fine enough, best part of the meal was as the bread…and it was free. Don’t waste your money or time, I read the bad reviews and thought it could be different for us. Nope.

Food and service were outstanding. Not to mention the stunning view. My husband and I went there for a coffee at first and the staff was so lovely we decided to go back for brunch. After that we went back for dinner. We just couldn't get enough of this place. We had a 3 weeks vacation driving around Italy and our experience at Terraza was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. The dinner we had was comparable to a Michelin star restaurant. Andrea and Nico were lovely and offered impeccable service. Looking forward to my next Lake Como trip.

Restaurant
Ristorante Crotto di Pino is a hidden gem slightly outside the center of Varenna, offering a homely feel and popular with locals. It's conveniently located near the ferry station and various villas for great photo opportunities. The restaurant provides an authentic Italian dining experience with friendly staff and delicious food, including fish from the lake, risotto, pasta with chestnut and truffle, and more. Visitors also praise the amazing view of Lake Como.
Restaurant with spectacular views. About a 30 minute walk from Varenna, the food we had was delicious, professionally presented and the service was very pleasant. Highly recommended!

Very nice cosy place, atmosphere is great. Delicious food, great wine, what do you need more? Worth to come and try.

We were recommended this restaurant by our local landlord and we're happy to find it still serving at 9pm. We were very pleasantly surprised by the gorgeously lit terrace overlooking the lake. The menu offered a selection of authentic dishes with ingredients locally sourced. The Lake fish was deliciously delicate and fresh. The venison stew packed a flavour punch and the meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The Tagliatelle Ragu was a great portion and was nicely seasoned. We enjoyed the house white wine and the service was accommodating and allowed us to relax on the terrace til late.

We loved this restaurant so much that we came back for dinner five nights in a row. The food is outstanding – we tried almost the entire menu and everything was fresh, flavorful, and consistently excellent. The service is warm and friendly, the house wine is delicious, and the atmosphere is perfect. Background music is set at just the right volume for conversation. Truly one of the best dining experiences we’ve had.

Day 3

West side of town
For day 3, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Castello di Vezio, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to La Passerella. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Located on a promontory overlooking Varenna in the center of Lake Como, Castello di Vezio is a 12th-century castle with a rich history as a military outpost. It offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding villages from its main tower and garden. The castle provides tours of its dungeons, features a falconry, and boasts a garden adorned with statues.
Breathtaking views, beautiful garden, lovely scenery, definitely worth a visit. One of my favorite places here in Lake Como. It's also relatively small so you can really take your time enjoying everything and you don't have to stress about missing something. It's fun for people of all ages but bear in mind that there is a bit of a walk from the car park to the tower. It's not the easiest walk either, up and down on the pebbled pathway. It's not for people with physical hindrance.
Snowbird . — Google review
Castello di Vezio is a scenic and well-preserved medieval fortress above Varenna, offering some of the most stunning panoramic views over Lake Como. The climb up is a bit steep, but worth it for the peaceful gardens, the mysterious ghost sculptures scattered around the grounds, and the historic tower with medieval artifacts inside. There’s also a small botanical garden and occasional falconry shows. A perfect mix of history, nature, and quiet charm—highly recommended for a relaxed visit away from the crowds.

Worth the visit. You can drive up close to the castle, with very few spots, still have to walk few minutes. They have senior tickets 4 euro, so that was great. The views are indeed excellent. The owl in the cage is unnerving, not sure why it's there.

Unbeatable panorama views of Lake Como! This is a must visit. The hike up is difficult, 30m of just steep uphill. But it’s well worth it. Came in Sept on weekend and it wasn’t busy at all. Also a very nice cafe and bathroom
Pat Z — Google review
A stunning and well-preserved castle. While not particularly large, its simplicity adds to its charm. The hike to reach it took about 45 minutes, but it was absolutely worth it. There is an alternative route for those arriving by car, but I opted to walk for a more authentic experience. The view of Lake Como was indescribable! Visited in September. Entry was €7.
Juliana L — Google review
Such a lovely spot with incredible views over Lake Como. The castle itself is full of charm and we even saw a beautiful owl on site, which made the visit extra special. The walk up the hill is a bit steep so you’ll definitely feel it but it’s absolutely worth it once you reach the top!
Magdalena S — Google review
Amazing views! Absolutely worth going there😍 but the climb to the castle is steep and it takes approximately 30 minutes, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and have water! in the ticket office you can buy drinks and snacks (we had a very yummy hot chocolate ☺️) and there're places to sit. Moreover, there's a picnic area

Castello di Vezio is a charming little castle above Varenna. The garden is peaceful and well kept, and the views over Lake Como are absolutely stunning. The castle itself is small, but climbing the tower gives you an even better lookout. Great spot for a relaxed visit with a bit of history and plenty of scenery.

Hotel Villa Cipressi, by R Collection Hotels, is a historic lakefront hotel that dates back to the 1300s. It offers beautiful gardens, a spa area for relaxation, and a bar with a terrace where guests can enjoy stunning views of the surroundings. The hotel has been carefully maintained and restored to preserve its architectural features. With its authentic new look unveiled recently, it now boasts upgraded facilities including Pulitzers Bar and the new restaurant Jansz.
My husband and I had such a lovely stay at Villa Cipressi. The views from our room were incredible and the hotel itself is beautiful. The staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was a nice addition. And the access to the gardens / views from the gardens made it even more worth it. We will definitely be back!
Rachel U — Google review
We visited Hotel Villa Cipressi to explore the gardens, and it was absolutely worth the €10 entry fee. The views of Lake Como were stunning – peaceful, romantic, and perfect for photos. The gardens are well kept and offer a lovely walk through nature with gorgeous backdrops. We queued at the famous gate for a photo, but the line was quite hectic and we ended up waiting over an hour. Some people took their time, which is understandable, but it did slow things down a lot. It would be great if the hotel added a staff member to help manage the queue, maybe allowing around 2 minutes per person. That small change could make the experience smoother for everyone. After finally getting our photo, we enjoyed a drink by the bar. We didn’t check the price in advance, and a glass of Aperol Spritz came to €18 – definitely on the pricey side, but with that view, it's somewhat understandable. All in all, it was a lovely experience and we’ll definitely be back. Just a few improvements could make it perfect!

A Magical Stay by Lake Como! We stayed at Hotel Villa Cipressi for a wedding, and it was absolutely unforgettable. The location is breathtaking surrounded by stunning gardens and panoramic views of Lake Como that feel straight out of a dream. The staff was kind and professional, always ready to help with a smile. The rooms are charming and elegant, perfectly blending history with comfort. Everything was beautifully organized for the wedding from the ceremony overlooking the lake to the dinner under the stars. It’s one of those places that truly captures the magic of Italy.

Famous Gates of Heaven at Lake Como (Varenna). We came on a Monday morning at 10am, not many people in the garden. There were 2 other couples at the gate and once they left, we had the place to ourselves for 15 minutes! The area behind the gate is very shallow so make sure to have a wide angle lens for your photos! Very beautiful area, granted, we did not have to wait in line.

I shot a wedding at Hotel Villa Cipressi on Lake Como and the views are just unreal - every direction you look is a postcard. The light, the mountains, the water, it’s all just so dreamy! Beautiful gardens, winding little paths, and the prettiest spots for photos everywhere, overlooking the lake. One of my favourite places in the world!
Siobhan F — Google review
Save your money and buy a pass to the gardens but definitely don’t stay here. The worst customer service. Check in was awful and the night reception was incredibly rude. The day staff kept forgetting we were guests and kept yelling at us to pay to get in. I left 2 jackets in the closet upon check out and emailed to see if I could get them back somehow, Still no response a week later. Now I have lost the jackets completely as I am home now. The room was bare and felt like a hospital room. The blankets were terrible. Everything about this place is awful except the terrace views & the gardens.Do not recommend to anyone to stay here ever! Considering this was my first stop on our Italy travels I am disgusted and saddened I chose this place to be so important on my list of travels. Huge disappointment.
Tabanda F — Google review
This is only for anyone visiting the villa for photos. The ladies at the entrance were extremely rude — they immediately charged us €19 per person, and we later found out the tickets were actually €10. They weren’t willing to answer my questions and kept talking among themselves while I was waiting, which felt very unprofessional. Definitely poor customer service. Also, be prepared for a queue when entering, and note that your photos will depend heavily on the lighting. We went around 12 PM, and the light was harsh, so I was quite disappointed with how the photos turned out. However, the villa itself was beautiful — worth seeing if you go at a better time of day.

This is the first time in Lake Como and staying at Hotel Villa Cipressi was the best choice. Staying on the Eastern Coast is a great idea because you get views of the sunset. The rooms were comfortable, the overall hotel is lovely but the biggest seller here are the views. Simply breathtaking. Super romantic at all and every hour. Will definitely be coming back. The staff were super helpful and attentive. The breakfast was delicious. The drinks were great and the overall location is nicely situated close to the town square. Great place.

Caffe Varenna is a charming lakeside cafe located in Varenna, offering a rustic ambiance and a delightful terrace overlooking the water. It's known for serving pasta and aperitifs, making it an ideal spot to enjoy Italian cuisine while taking in scenic views of Lake Como. Visitors can easily reach Caffe Varenna by taking the car ferry from Menaggio to Varenna. Additionally, the cafe is praised for its friendly staff and great location.
This place is right below our Airbnb. We’ve been here 3 days and have eaten here 3 times - twice for breakfast and once for dinner. Service has been great! Food has been better than expected. Get dessert at dinner and get a made fresh croissant for breakfast! Eggs, yogurt, and more available! Location is amazing!

The only good thing about this place is the view of the lake. The food is pretty awful so does the drinks. I had the bolognese pasta the portion is tiny and the noodle is undercooked and there’s barely meat in the sauce. My partner had lasagna , it looks nothing like a lasagna and didn’t taste good either. There’s a very big menu of cocktails. I had the basil smash, but it’s overly sweet and artificial flavor and color added looks lime green. The outdoor space with view is limited and very tight. Service is pretty bad, can hardly get anyone’s attention.

Stopped by Varenna Café Bistrot for a quick break. The pistachio and berry tart and coffee were just okay—nothing exceptional, but still enjoyable. What really stood out were the serene views, which made for a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The service was a bit slow, which took away from the overall experience slightly, but the setting definitely made up for it. A nice spot to unwind by the water, just be prepared for a bit of a wait.

The ambience is unbeatable! The view of the Lake Como with the sun setting is mesmerizing. The Carbonara and tortellini was good but not amazing. The cocktails complimented the food good well. The service was courteous too..

The location by the lake is absolutely stunning. Our waiter was friendly, fun, and gave excellent recommendations for drinks—perfect if you want an authentic Italian experience. Both the main courses and desserts were delicious—simple, pure, and very satisfying. We especially enjoyed the saffron risotto and the Bolognese tortellini. Highly recommended!

Magical place for breakfast/lunch/dinner. At the foot of the Lago de Como, it is inspiring place. The coffee shop is a mix of sophistication with the town italian style that makes it truly worth to visit. The waiters are attentive and polite. I highly recommend this restaurant.

No frills- solid food at fair prices with one of the best views in town. We ordered bruschetta, which was two large thick slices of bread with very tasty toppings. They also offer regional wines that they will recommend if you ask. And if you like negronis, definitely order their green negroni! It was one of the best I’d had- still bitter and balanced but a little more herbaceous.

Varenna Caffè Bistrot became our go-to breakfast spot—and for good reason! The menu offered a delicious variety of options, from fresh pastries to hearty plates, all beautifully prepared. It was the kind of place that made mornings feel special. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a great breakfast in a beautiful lakeside setting.

The interior is clean and organized with friendly service, making it an excellent choice to cool down from the summer sun.
Delicious ice cream! I had Dubai choc and pistachio and was such a reasonable price compared to London! 3.50 euros for 2 scoops. There is a bit of a queue and no seating but it's what you expect for Lake Como in the summer!

La Passerella is a place you simply have to visit if you’re in the mood for exceptional ice cream. The wide variety of flavors, each rich and full of aroma, makes it hard to choose just one. Every single one we tried was exquisite – the perfect stop for a moment of sweet indulgence in Varenna

6. I repeat. *SIX* vegan gelatos here. If you are vegan, this is one of the good choices for gelato. It's right by the walk, right by the water, and has good choices. If anything it's a victim of it's own success as they almost ran out of some of the vegan gelatos by early afternoon. Do come here or the store next door for gelato. Good choices all around.

One of the nicest staff and service in Varenna , after having the racist experience with couple of their neighboring restaurants, we felt very welcoming in this cute little restaurant on the lake. The staff was very friendly and food was so delicious. Everything we ordered was fresh and served hot , tells their efficient service , considering their kitchen is little up on the hill . They also have very clean washroom. We enjoyed our dinner with peace , they didn’t rush us , we took our time . Highly recommend them ….

We stopped by Nilu’s Bar in Verena on a rainy afternoon when most of our planned restaurants were either closed or fully booked — and it turned out to be a great choice! To start, we ordered drinks — I had a tropical fruit punch and my husband had martini. Both were excellent. For lunch, we tried the bruschetta with mozzarella and a prawn sandwich, which were delicious, well-prepared, and nicely presented. For dessert, we went for a Nutella dark chocolate crepe, and honestly, it was the star of the meal — absolutely delightful! The restaurant setup was cozy and inviting, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall, a pleasant surprise and a lovely experience despite the rainy weather. Highly recommended if you’re in the area!

The view is beautiful. The ribs and the paprika mash was a wonderful surprise, very tasty. The seafood pasta was a bit dry but a good meal. The service was very disappointing, slow and rude staff. Located on Lake Como, Varenna, this location is a must-visit. The restaurant is very busy, so you have to expect to wait in long queues during busy seasons. With a great view of the lake and therefore very touristy but nevertheless pleasurable. We had a lovely aperitif here and decided to have a little bit to eat. The arugula salad was simple and delicious and I very much enjoyed my pillowy gnocchi with saffron and zucchini in cheese sauce. Since I’m no pizza expert, my husband ensured me his pizza (diavola?) was very tasty too. I couldn’t believe the staff though. They were so kind and professional, despite the incredible amount of walking they had to do from the kitchen (higher up in one of the streets) and the restaurant. Major kudos to them!

Vecchia Varenna is a charming restaurant in Varenna, Italy, offering a delightful dining experience with creative northern Italian antipasti, pasta, and freshwater fish. The restaurant features a terrace that overlooks the stunning Lake Como, providing a picturesque backdrop for enjoying delicious meals. While Vecchia Varenna is known for its beautiful setting and delectable cuisine, it's important to note that the overall dining experience can vary based on individual preferences and expectations.
A fantastic location with the terrace overlooking the lake. No reservations possible. We were told we would need to wait an hour but it was only about 10mins. We chose this place for the location and because it has vegan options on the menu. The menu is limited but we like that. You can view it on the website and there and at the restaurant it is in Italian and English. The pasta dishes and cheese platter were both high quality delicious as were the desserts. Service was a little slow and it is quite pricey but we think justified. This is for a slow quality meal with a great view, not a rushed one.

Had dinner there during our stay in Varenna. Lovely food and cocktails, like all places along the lake, it's a "minimum effort and maximum gain" as the location does ALL the work for them. So, the menu is all the usual Italian carbs, and hasn't changed in forever. All places have the tourist stuff you'd expect. Staff are exhausted, and short, they hop from customer to customer, everyone is so hard-working and switched on. The food is nice and fresh, speed of service hit-and-miss, location is the best, and honestly, that's all you need.

We had the lasagna and pizza, they were both decent. We came just before it became crowded, but we were still seated at an akward table. Service was fast
Iulia D — Google review
We were seated at a table that still had used dishes from the previous guests. The restaurant was clearly busy, so we didn’t complain—we were just glad to be seated. My husband moved the used plates and silverware to the side to make room. A waiter saw him and said, “Am I not moving fast enough for you?”—which surprised us, as we hadn’t said a word. Later, when my husband asked for a dry red wine, the same waiter snapped, “Am I supposed to just pick it for you?” The tone throughout felt unnecessarily hostile. I originally posted a review similar to this one, but it was removed - TWICE. After doing some research, I learned that in Italy, businesses can request the deletion of reviews they claim are unfair—even if they’re honest accounts. It appears this restaurant actively removes negative feedback. Still, many older reviews are visible, as they were unsuccessful in removing them - and the recurring theme is clear: disrespectful service, rude comments, and poor treatment of customers. I recommend reading through the 1-star reviews carefully—they paint a very consistent picture. Unfortunately, our experience matched theirs.

This restaurant offers unrivaled views of the lake from the veranda. It is a perfect location to done and just outside the very small and busy lake front of Varenna, but close enough to feel the ambience. The food was good and it has a good varied menu. The service could have been better though. We were left several times wondering what, or if, we had ordered. We also had to ask several times for service. However, this did not detract too much from what turned out to be a lovely lunch.

Victoria Grill is a restaurant in Varenna, Italy with an elegant and traditional atmosphere. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, and serves contemporary Italian cuisine. It's dog friendly, accepts credit cards, and has table service.
While exploring Varenna in search of a place to eat, we happened to meet a woman on her break who warmly recommended the restaurant she works at — Victoria Grille. We decided to follow her suggestion, and we’re so glad we did. We arrived about 30 minutes before the kitchen closed for their dinner break, but the the waiter Mauro kindly seated us anyway, which we truly appreciated he was very kind. For starters, we had the Bresaola della Valtellina con rucola e sciatt and the Parmigiana di Melanzane. The eggplant parm was a standout — light, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. While the bresaola was good, I would especially recommend the parmigiana. For our main course, we ordered three servings of lake perch over lemon risotto, which we paired with a bottle of Opera wine. The risotto had a delicate lemon flavor and was creamy without being heavy — perfectly balanced. We also shared a Margherita pizza, which was generously sized and great for sharing. To end the meal, we ordered both the cannoli and the tiramisu, along with three espressos. The desserts were delicious — the tiramisu in particular was airy and elegant, and the presentation across the board was excellent. To our delight, the woman who originally recommended the restaurant, Paola, ended up serving us dessert after her break. She was incredibly kind and even brought us complimentary limoncello, then shared some wonderful recommendations for other places to visit in Italy. Thank you, Paola, and thanks to all the staff at Victoria Grille for such a memorable and heartwarming dining experience. Highly recommended!

We had a great time here! The food was absolutely delicious and amazing! The pizza was exquisite! The waitors were a little bit displeases with our big group, and in general they seemed overworked, so they had a little mood. But overall the experience was just amazing. I'm glad we came here after walking around the village.

A perfect experience in Varenna! We had dinner at Victoria and had a wonderful time. The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed, with a beautiful view and friendly service. The dishes are tastefully prepared using quality ingredients. The desserts are also worth a try!

This was a recommended place. It wasn’t too far from Villa Cipressi. We had to wait outside in bad weather for it to open. This was a bit inconvenient. But once inside, our server spoke an English and Spanish which was a plus. Our pizzas were delicious. They have one of the freshest tasting Cesar salads. Those that had the salmon were equally happy with their meal. The Hugo Spritz was refreshing. It was a great night with great food. I highly recommend eating here.

Writing a review to hopefully boost this place's reputation. Unlike some other guests (apparently) I had a wonderful time here. The staff were friendly and efficient. The restaurant is well presented with a nice atmosphere. I came for lunch alone, and had a pizza with confit cherry tomatoes and pesto. It was absolutely delicious. The bread, oil, and vinegar on the side were amazing as well. My only suggestion is that it would be great if the website or google listing mentioned that the kitchen closes from 6 to 6:30 (at least, it was closed the first time I dropped by). I came for lunch the next day instead. When it comes to some of the negative reviews, I wonder if they're from Americans with different cultural expectations. Maybe they're used to being able to "customise" things more, or they're interpreting perfectly normal tones as rude.

We had lunch here as a family with two teenagers, and everything was excellent. We ordered pasta, risotto, and the filetto with porcini mushrooms — all dishes were delicious and perfectly cooked. Desserts were also lovely. The staff was very attentive and kind, and the service was right on time. We really enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere in the glass house, the tables are nicely spaced, so guests don’t disturb each other — it feels comfortable to sit and move around, without any sense of crowding. A truly enjoyable experience on Lake Como!

The low google reviews for this restaurant are simply unfair! The staff were friendly and the pizza was incredible. Definitely a restaurant worth visiting while in Varena!
Sarah K — Google review
The food is delicious but a little bit pricey compared to the quality and other restaurants. I ordered grilled beef but it can be more tender because it is a bit chewy. I would also suggest to season it more. My friend ordered a vegetarian pizza which tastes good. The staff are friendly especially the girl in pink who seems to be the manager or owner, although, I understand that other staff need more training in interacting with customers/guest. The atmosphere is good and good spacing of table. We sat in the side facing the church. Overall, it was nice and giving it 3 for the food but 4 stars for service and atmosphere.

Ristorante il Portichetto ( Vezio Lago di Como)

Ristorante il Portichetto a Vezio is a charming 3-star restaurant located in a historic neighborhood, just a short distance from Agueglio Pass and Lago de Lecco. Visitors rave about the authentic Italian cuisine, particularly praising the sublime pasta, divine bruschetta with pesto cream, and amazing pizzas. The welcoming atmosphere and excellent service make it an ideal stop for lunch or dinner after hiking to Vezio from Varenna.
This was a wonderful surprise of a tiny restaurant, which I ate at every night for a week. I enjoyed the outdoors of the restaurant more than the indoors. You can make a reservation which guarantees you a table (indoor or outdoor). I enjoyed practicing my Italian with the staff, and they were kind in helping me! Some locals eat here and some tourists. Most people dined here multiple times, and to my knowledge, this is the only restaurant in Vezio. For a comparison, I ate in many restaurants in Varenna and other towns in the Lake Como area. Although the food portions were larger in Varenna and other towns, the service was much better here. I was never treated disrespectfully as a "tourist", which happened consistently in other areas. If you are a tourist, be aware this is a tourist area, so prices comparatively higher in the Lake Como area as a standard. People that walk up to Vezio also enjoy grabbing a snack, a fruit smoothie, or an adult beverage, as this is the first place they come to after climbing the steep 20 min. climb from Varenna. I'd like to thank the owners, who took time to talk to me, other couples, and families, showing kindness by asking about our days and being friendly. That's the true spirit of being Italian, and I thank you.

Situated in a cute little alley. Friendly staff, food was ok but we were happy with the restaurant so close to our accommodation.

It was such a lovely cozy experience to have dinner hear! The restaurant is set in a little alleyway and the staff welcomes you like you are family; so nice! The food was very good, we had the gnocchi & the spring beef serloin, along with the housewine! We absolutely loved it. ❤️
Chrissy O — Google review
Quite a disappointment! Although meals seem inexpensive for the area, portion sizes are small with very few toppings. The "daily meal" poke bowl was the worst: cost 14€ and had only a few crumbs of fish (almost couldn't tell there was any). Not authentic and very overpriced for the poor quality of the food. It's normal to have higher prices in popular areas, but this is definitely a tourist trap and certainly doesn't meet Italian standards.

Amazing place, really nice staff (taught me some Italian!), and the food was insanely good!!
Filip N — Google review
Unacceptable service. My husband and I wanted to order lunch for our very hungry 2 year old daughter. We also orderd 1 drink per person and a meal for my husband. We were refused service because I didn't want to eat anything and they only accept patrons who order one meal per person. We were sitting in an otherwise empty restaurant, so we weren't blocking a table from other higher paying patrons. Very disappointing and not family friendly. In a tiny village without other food options nearby unacceptable.

Great experience. A great place, away from the usual tourist crowds. The food is absolutely delicious, the atmosphere is warm and the restaurant has an authentic charm full of character. The people are fiendly and make you feel truly comfortable. Next year we're coming back.

Proximity is everything
For day 4, we bundled attractions like Olivedo Lido - Lido di Varenna and La Vista and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

Lido di Varenna in Perledo is a bit confusing as it overlaps with the territory of Perledo. The tourist office is located at the Varenna-Esino railway station, which is actually in Perledo. The area offers various spots for sunbathing and swimming, such as Fiumelatte and Lido di Varenna-Perledo, where comfortable sunbeds are available to enjoy the Italian sun.
I think it’s a new cafe on this location. Good coffee, pastries and gelato, friendly staff, stylish and calm atmosphere. Wonderful view. Great either for a sunny or stormy weather. Our go to place to wait a ferry or a train. I hope we will have a chance to explore the lunch menu and beach too.

Perfect place to chill and enjoy good food. Yes it's not cheap but the quality, friendliness and the view is stunning. Also I was allowed to park my boat and the locals gave me a helping hand.

We had a lovely lunch at Olivedo today. The service was great and the food was delicious. They ran out of the menu item that two of us ordered and when I changed to an item that was more expensive they didn’t charge me the extra. That’s what I call going above and beyond.

There are a few things that went wrong during my visit. 1) When I ordered at the bar, the receptionist kept asking us to order more food, appetizers and drinks. Even though we said we didnt want to. It made us really uncomfortable. I get it that youre trying to upsell and get us to buy more food, but please do it nicely and dont smirk at us for not ordering appetizers?! 2) We ordered at 19:45. At 20:45, the food still didnt come. We went to ask at the cashier, and only after reminding them, then did the chef turned on the stove and started cooking and promised to serve the food in 10mins. Fortunately this was the case. 3) Unfortunately the food was a huge disappointment. They costed 20 euro a plate, but the taste was mediocre, like microwavable food. 4) We paid right after ordering, before we ate the food. After we finished the meal and wanted to leave, the staff asked us “have you paid yet?” Normally this is a normal question but since we have had 3 disappointing instances, it was really upsetting for them to do this. ++++ On the bright side, the view was awesome. But this has nothing to do with the restaurant.
Jan F — Google review
Our experience was incredible. The drinks were delicious and the beach area was clean and relaxing. We were able to get into the water without too many people crowding.
Carol D — Google review
The worst experience which I ever had in Varenna. We paid 91,5 euro for these dishes + 3 coke and 1 fruit juice ... "TAKE AWAY"... I live in Milan almost 15 years, I also never got these dishes with those prices. 20 euro for only 1 chiken skewer, 16 eur for few withered rockets and 1 peach (looked like foods for pig), does that make sence? Otherwise, I spoke Italian with them even I'm asian. I got shocked when we opened the box at home, seriously? They were kidding me, or they thought I was stupid? In summer, I go to Varenna almost every week, I swear, I will never ever back here again and I will tell to all of my friends should be advoid this restaurant. P/s: I travel a lot and never review 1 star and bad recommend but this's very first time I do it.
Kami N — Google review
I usually refrain from giving negative reviews and I'm not usually picky over food, but my experiences today have really encouraged me to share so you can make an informed decision while in Varenna 🙏🏼 First of all, the staff that took our order was very rude: we ordered enough food and drink for 5 people, including 5 main dishes, and the staff kept judging our orders and pushed us to order more again and again. When we said no, he was giving us an attitude. Upon completing our order, we paid immediately. Drinks and appetizer came rather quick. And then they had us waiting for the main dishes. After 1 hour of wait and the food didn't come, one of my friends went to the order station (which is next to the kitchen). The kitchen staff was just chilling and they weren't cooking any food. My friend got really angry and only then, they started cooking our food. They said it'd be ready in 10 mins. After such a long wait (and spending a huge amount of money, i.e. €20 per main dish), the food that were served were really really disappointing. I've had great food in Italy, but the food served here are even worse than those that you can buy from supermarket and microwave yourself. At the end, when we were leaving, multiple staffs kept asking us whether we have paid. Under normal circumstances, this might be okay, but given our back-to-back negative experiences, this was like adding more fuel to the fire. Honestly, one of the worst experiences I've ever had and it was really sad because I loved Varenna the moment we reached. Such a lovely city, but our memories are tainted due to this experience. Please please please avoid this place as much as possible 🙏🏼

Staff were very helpful, patient and polite. The toilets are clean and the coffee and ice cream were good value. However, access to the lake is down a rocky slipway and you have to take care of boats. Not the best swimming but the views are lovely.

La Vista is a hotel that offers a relaxing retreat with various types of rooms and apartments. It's an ideal place to unwind and savor life at a leisurely pace. The hotel provides gourmet dining experiences with diverse cuisine options, including vegan and vegetarian dishes. The wine cellar is well-stocked with a focus on regional wines, organic options, and craft beers. The service is known for being quick and friendly, making it a great choice for those seeking a pleasant dining experience.
Had a great experience! Good food in an unbeatable atmosphere. I would improve the service though which was lacking for us. It was hard to get our server’s attention. The Ragu was good and so was the ravioli. The lamb chops were super tender and good. Ask of the good was great. You do pay extra for the view. They could get a perfect score with better service although it is still a great restaurant
Pat Z — Google review
If you are staying multiple nights in Varena, then La Vista should be on your list as the view at sunset is unparalleled! Like most nice restaurants in Italy, make sure you have a reservation for dinner no matter what day of the week it is. The service here was slow and they seemed to continually assist other tables over our own. We sat with not even wine or bread for almost 30 minutes. The food was hit or miss for us. The risotto was by far the most tasty dish and all of us enjoyed the main courses; however, the desserts all fell short. The tiramisu was dry in the middle and the crème brûlée had split. All in all, we would still go back for the breathtaking view of Lake Como!
Sarah K — Google review
La Vista delivered an absolutely stunning experience—both on the plate and beyond it. The food was exquisite, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. But what truly elevated the evening were the breathtaking lake views that framed every bite. The ambiance was romantic and serene, perfect for a special night out. Service was attentive without being intrusive, making us feel welcomed and relaxed. If you're in Varenna, this is a must-visit spot for a memorable meal with an amazing view.

We showed up at the perfect time as someone was just leaving and so we were seated within a few minutes for dinner without a reservation. We were seated right by the window and enjoyed a beautiful view for a few minutes while the sun set. I got the risotto special which was perfectly cooked and incredible flavor. My husband got the mushroom ravioli which he really liked. I also got the dessert special of the day which was caramelized peaches with a cream and crumble and it was amazing!! My husband got the chocolate mousse which he said was so chocolatey and paired perfectly with the raspberry sauce they give you.

After a challenging journey to Italy, dinner at La Vista Ristorante was exactly what we needed — a perfect evening that made all the travel troubles worthwhile. The restaurant’s renowned sunset views over the mountains live up to their reputation. The lighting creates a magical atmosphere, and the peaceful lakeside setting is truly breathtaking. Beyond the spectacular views, the food is outstanding. Standout dishes included the cod ravioli with yogurt wasabi, the salmon confit, and the chocolate mousse — each expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The service was exceptional. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout our meal, and they graciously accommodated our request to modify our reservation when we were delayed getting into town. I highly recommend La Vista Ristorante for anyone visiting Lake Como. It’s an essential dining experience that perfectly complements a weekend on the lake.

Experience the beauty of Lake Como with Taxi Boat Varenna, offering short and long trips to various attractions along the lake. From a half-hour tour of Varenna to the 2.5-hour Georges tour passing by villas including George Clooney's in Laglio, there are options for everyone. Enjoy a small group tour on an open-air speed boat, taking in the picturesque towns of Bellagio, Tremezzo, and San Giovanni from the water.
There was a QR code in our hotel reception about a shared boat tour. I hadn’t found any shared options when researching so this was really good. €85 per person for 2.5 hours. Pick up from Varenna tour around the lake showing you all the nice villas and important things. We were met by a guide who spoke English at Villa Balbianello and taken on a one hour tour of the house and then we explored the gardens for half an hour before being picked up at the dock. I booked this on the day that I saw it which was awesome! Final €50 to be paid in cash at the dock. Option to be dropped off in Bellagio on the way back. Really enjoyed it! Beware though the water can get choppy which meant some water splashes. Didn’t bother me or my partner but seemed to really annoy other people 😂 Would recommend!

Our group tour with Taxi Boat Varenna was the highlight of our few days in the Lake Como area! We got to stop and see views of many of the towns in the central lake region and our driver/guide shared really interesting commentary throughout the tour. The boat was comfortable (even heated since the day was a bit chilly), the views were great, the guide was everything we could have asked for. Would give more than 5 stars if we could - highly recommend!!

Glad we discovered this gem online and booked a tour in advance. The service was good and my kids enjoyed the boat ride. The boat was comfortable and the captain was humorous and shared information about the various locations along the trip.

I'd give this 10 stars if I could. Me and my partner booked the shared Classic tour lasting 1 hour, the tour was booked to start at 6pm, we arrived at 5:50pm and checked in as per the email instructions. Luckily for us we were the only 2 to have booked the tour and therefore had the tour to ourselves. This is the highlight of our Italian lakes trip so far, the captain was so great, played great music, provided excellent photography skills, (he took photos of me and my partner together) and provided good and interesting information about the landmarks around the centre of the lake, despite his limited English. The boat was lovely, clean and looked very stylish. We felt so lucky and enjoyed the boat trip so much, can't recommend the service enough.

Loved our Villa Balbianello tour experience with Taxi Boat. The ride to and from Varenna is gorgeous and the driver pointed out many grand villas along the way. The villa tour itself was very informative and we got a fascinating glimpse of the structure’s history. Thoroughly appreciated the timing of the pickup and drop off at the villa dock as well. Highly recommend!

Great value for this trip! We loved getting on the water and the tour of Balibionello was a highlight. It’s so much more than a beautiful place and we are happy we booked this tour to learn about it.

We booked this taxi boat last minute on Saturday to go from Varenna to Tremezzo. When we are getting in we explained the driver we need to take some pucs along the way and if he could drive bit slowly. He agreed at that point. But when the boat started he blistered through the ride, 15 minutes ride was only 10 minutes. When we asked him whether he could stop in the middle of the lake for us to take some pictures he was very rude about it and he screamed at me saying he has another tour and he has to go back soon. We paid a huge amount of money just for a 10 minute ride. I understand they are also doing continuous tours, but you have to make your customers happy by atleast giving them some comfort and listening to them. When the boat stopoed at tremezzo. He was like get down get down i have to go. He was rushing so much. I do not recommend this company for tours. Drivers re very rude and arrogant. There are other 2 boat companies in varenna just check them out

Great communication and a reminder after booking and the day before was great. The instructions were detailed and easy to follow. Nice boat ride and ease of seeing the Villa was amazing. We particularly enjoyed information from the boat driver. Would recommend plus added feature was being able to be dropped off in Bellagio after the tour.

The Church of St. John the Baptist is a small and charming 11th-century church located in Como, Italy. It was built on the remains of an earlier early Christian structure and features ancient frescoes, including a large depiction of Saint Christopher on the facade of San Giorgio. The church underwent restoration in the 1960s, preserving its serene atmosphere and distinct from other Lombard-style churches in the area.

Our dining experience was marred by the food being not just different, but also unappetizing. The shrimp stuffed ravioli, ordered by three individuals, was particularly disappointing, with a fishy taste and a lukewarm serving temperature. The drinks were also subpar, with the Old Fashion and Martinis being the worst we have ever had. As we left, we couldn't help but wonder what issues plagued this establishment.

Restaurant
VarennaMonamour is a contemporary restaurant located on a quiet street near the harbor, offering an intimate dining experience with its small dining areas spread across multiple levels. The interior features a blend of old brick, dark wood, and modern accents like animal print chairs and stone floors. Situated in the ancient town of Varenna on the eastern shores of Lake Como, it provides a unique ensemble of lake and mountain views.
We were fortunate to be able to walk up and get a table out on the walkway once they opened. The service was wonderful, everyone was so nice. We got the Paccheri, Broccoli Ravioli and the Sea Bass. Everything was fresh and cooked well. We also had some white and red house wine that was a great addition. The prices were lower compared to the main downtown area, which was nice. The views though, you cannot beat them!

We enjoyed dinner here on our last night in Varenna. We ordered the beef fillet which was excellent. We also ordered the lamb which was a special on the night which was enjoyable but slightly overcooked for our preference. We also ordered desert which was fantastic. We managed to get a table after walking in.

We had a wonderful dinner in Varenna. The service was on point, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and authentic. The pasta with smoked fish was surprisingly good! The Aperol Spritz was perfectly made, and the desserts were delicious. Highly recommended!

Delicious food with a beautiful view sitting outside on the steps. We had Aperol Spritz, parmigiana, tomato pasta with burrata, and a creamy pasta with smoked swordfish all of which were cooked to perfection.

Terrible service. A hair was found in my salmon and after informing the staff, they first tried to convince me that the hair was a "natural part of the salmon", they told me it was the fishbone part of the salmon (check the picture below). Then they said they would get me a new one, which I was grateful for. However, later that day, when I checked the bill (only price, not items listed), I realized that they charged me €6.00 extra for no apparent reason. I calculated the price of my ordered items as presented on the menu I received and included the service cost, but at the end, the cost doesn't match up to the receipt. The only possibility is that they charged me extra for the new salmon they gave me, in which they didn't inform me beforehand it will cost extra to have a new salmon .

Truly spectacular food, with good service and (if you are lucky enough to get an outdoor table) a delightful view down the alley to the lake. Good quality table linen and a spotless, well equipped toilet add a little extra touch.

27metriquadri is a charming spot with a friendly staff and good prices. They offer delicious grilled vegetable bruschetta, which is a must-try, especially for vegans as they have marked vegetarian and vegan options on their menu. The outdoor seating area provides a lovely setting to enjoy the piazza, and it's wheelchair accessible. While some find the drinks service to be lacking in terms of presentation, others appreciate the refreshing Hugo Spritz and tasty sandwiches for a quick lunch.
We had a lovely lunch here on our trip to Lecco and exploring the surrounding towns by the lake. Most of all, our waitress was lovely and welcoming and offered to warm up our 8 month old’s bottle and we had some lovely banter. The pepperoni pizza was yummy! And we ordered a second cappuccino; the first hit the spot too well. And the tiramisu was on point; slightly sweeter than previous I had tasted, I am not complaining!

so good and authentic pizza/sandwhich/food! we came here for lunch during our times at lake como and i gotta say it did not disappoint. The pizzas were sooo good and a decent prize for a really good portion! Service was nice and they even have a bathroom to use if u need. (Just outdoor tables may have ants and bees flying around sometimes on tables but like one or two…) Wish I tried their tiramisu but i was so full from the pizzas lol but i would come back next time and recommend for anyone coming into lake como! (but tables are limited and it may take a while to get one depending on how many ppl are there)

Very busy area — it's hard to find a place where you can sit down to eat, but we managed to get a table at this restaurant. We ordered a pizza, and even though they brought the wrong one, we ate it anyway — and it turned out to be the best pizza dough we had during our holiday in Italy!

Ristorante Visteria, located at the Hotel Royal Victoria, offers a special and delightful dining experience. The restaurant boasts delicious food and impeccable service with breathtaking views of the lake and mountains to the south. While it may be on the pricier side, many find it worth the splurge. Guests have enjoyed an incredible 6-course meal that extended to 10 courses with additional treats, including a special birthday dessert.
This dining experience is second to none! It is a must for a special occasion when visiting Lake Como. We visited during our honeymoon and it is chefs kiss!! The food is incredible, 7 courses is actually 10 and the matching wine is like nothing you'll have had before. Staff were outstanding, and knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. They were even kind enough to make a special dessert wishing us a happy honeymoon. Highly, highly recommend.

Wow! This dinner was the best dinner I have had in my entire life and we’ve eaten at Michelin star restaurants! This restaurant is beyond deserving of Michelin status! The staff (Pepe and Aziz) were phenomenal and so professional and accommodating! Chef Francesco Sarno personally introduced himself before dinner, made suggestions, and delivered a meal we will remember for a lifetime. I’ve never had the sensory experience of smell, visual presentation, and taste all come together so magically. This restaurant and hotel gets 5 stars in my book! I hope I get the chance to return one day!

Absolutely delicious lunch with a view on the lake and the beach! We started with a prosciutto crudo appetizer, followed by the Greek salad and perfectly tender beef that melted in your mouth. The lilac lemonade was such a refreshing surprise. Great service and an unbeatable setting overlooking Lake Como — highly recommend.

We had an amazing 3 course dinner experience here. The food was very delicious and flavorful. It was also very unique with the flavors. The brought out many complimentary appetizers and desserts. Just beware the price of champagne. They asked us if we would like champagne when we sat down and i didn’t realize they were going to charge us 160 euros doe the four glasses. All in all I highly recommend this place for dinner.

Dined at Visteria to celebrate a special occasion and it absolutely did not disappoint. The lake view was even more stunning in person, and the service was genuinely five-star from start to finish. It was the best dinner we had in Lake Como – made even better by the warm, personal touches throughout. A special thank you to Luca, who went above and beyond to make our celebratory evening truly memorable. Highly recommended!

First night in Varenna, and how Ristorante Visteria did not disappoint! Simply put, best restaurant and experience we’ve ever had, and you cannot miss the opportunity to place a reservation. Service and dishes were impeccable!! Amazing attention to detail, and had catered to dietary restrictions for every course. Lovely for the Chef to come out and introduce themself to finish off the night. Thank you for having us 🩷

Food, service, and atmosphere were absolutely amazing. I'm not sure if they have a Michelin star or not but they sure do need one. It is that good and the service is VERY good and the view is also absolutely beautiful. We had some creative dishes that we never had anywhere else. It is a must go, especially if you're staying at the hotel. The wine pairings were fantastic as well. Not going to post pictures because this is a restaurant you should experience in person. It's just a *bit* pricey but it's still an excellent experience.

An incredible experience for our 9 year wedding anniversary. The service was the best we have ever experienced and is on another level to anything else in varenna. The food itself all had a story to tell and was just as much creative art as it was food. The wait staff were all knowledgeable and super passionate. Happy to explain the dishes and give feedback. After what was an amazing meal the chef came out and introduced himself which was a nice touch. I highly recommend the spaghetti, risotto, squid, Sirloin and the chocolate souffle. You will not be disappointed here. Definitely a special occasion fine dining experience you will not forget.

The sort of ceramics that are unique and you don't see everywhere that makes this store extra special to visit. Its nice to know when buying you are supporting local people. There is all sorts of things from Christmas decorations to jewellery to lovely plates and show pieces. If I had a bigger suitcase I would have bought a lot more. From there you can walk uphill and through staircases 🚶‍♂️⬆️ to reach 📍 Villa Monastero 🌿🏛️, then return down to the ferry station in time to board for Bellagio ⛴️. The path is short but very scenic, with red railings, flowers 🌸, and stunning views of Lake Como 🏞️—especially beautiful at sunset 🌅. A charming walk, though be ready for some steps along the way.

I brought it to this museum on April 5, 2025, and we were very happy with the work done in the pavilions. I am so sorry that the municipality of Varenna did not give the right amount of attention to this museum to give it good publicity, given that the city of Varenna is on the shores of Lake Como, and is much visited as a city, but the museum was empty. Bistro Varenna is a charming Italian eatery with a rich history dating back to 1893. Nestled in the historic Piazza San Giorgio di Varenna, this bistro offers a mix of traditional and innovative Mediterranean, regional, and local dishes. The menu features authentic Italian and regional flavors that promise to delight your palate. Visitors praise the friendly staff, delicious lasagna, delightful drinks, and delectable chocolate croissants.
One of the best desserts i ever tried in my life. We had 2 capucchinos, one mocachino and a Ginseng coffe. It was all very good. Keep in mind the Ginseng (big size) coffe has the same size as the typicall espresso shot. Still it was worth it. Loved the taste. 👍🏻 I recommend the pistachio tart for the sweet toothed people 😁

Service was great, servers were much kinder than many other places we visited around Lake Como. The server Michele (? Not sure if I’m butchering his name. He has dark hair and a band tattoo on his upper forearm) was so kind and welcoming. He served us 3 mornings in a row, and made delicious cappuccinos. The vibe is very cute, and prices are good. If I was a local I’d be here every day. We saw several locals visiting this bistro in the mornings, which shows you it’s actually GOOD and not just for tourists. Restaurant
Located in Varenna, Locanda Cavallino offers a dining experience with a modern style and traditional elements. The restaurant features a menu that includes both classic and innovative Italian dishes, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. Situated near the train station, the restaurant provides a pleasant ambiance with an outdoor terrace and stylish interior. Guests can enjoy views of ferry activity while dining outdoors. Additionally, the establishment hosts special events such as white truffle dinners paired with fine wines.
Fantastic location to sit and soak in the Como atmosphere. We went for a ‘snack’ after a couple of hours exploring Varenna. Lovely staff. Stunning views from the outdoor seating area in the glorious Italian sun. We had delicious focaccia and pasta ragu with some delicious Prosecco - couldn’t be more perfect. For 2 people, the price was reasonable. Certainly comparable to Milan/London.

Food is delicious here. They do secondi very well. Our first visit, we had the famous local Lake Como dish: the creamy risotto with lake fish. Our second visit, we had Tuna and breaded chicken (with Caesar’s dressing). They were both excellent. Good selection of wine too. Service here is professional, but not warm, friendly, or welcoming compared to other local restaurants that we’ve experienced in mid lake (Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna, etc). Would we dine here again in the future? I would say yes ONLY IF we can sit inside. Our most recent visit, we were seated outdoor and it was extremely unpleasant due to bugs, especially flies - see my pictures. The restaurant needs to do more to address the flies issue (rather than simply throwing their hands up in the air and say “this is nature”). In Singapore, Dubai, and Thailand, upscale restaurants have found ways to deal with flies to make sure they don’t come to bother the customers. There’s no reason why Italians can’t learn from these other places.

Good food here but better options in Varenna. Had the three sauce beef pasta and it was good. I enjoyed it. The Cesar chicken was also very good. A big piece of fried chicken. But the beef was disgusting. It was just roast beef on top of some terrible polenta. I’ve never hated a dish in Italy but I did hate this one. There are better places in Varenna to eat for better food

Amazing food! I also had Tiramisu but I devoured it before I remembered to take a pic. Highly recommend if you are going to lake Como it’s right by the ferry in varenna and a nice way to end your day

Food was excellent. Serving sizes a little small considering the price. Service was a little slow. Fish antipasto was excellent. The restaurant itself had a good atmosphere. Would recommend.

Amazing food and excellent service from all staff members. We enjoyed this restaurant so much that we went back a second time during our short stay in Varenna. We are both gluten free and whilst they have few gf options they are delicious and filling ! We had spaghetti one night and risotto the other. They also have gf bread and bread sticks for the table !! :-) Grazie mille from Ella and Mitch ! 🇦🇺🙌🏼

Food: Small menu, but great food. Lots of original dishes in a touristy area where many restaurants serve similar dishes. Service: We ate outside, which has beautiful views of Lake Como. At the time the restaurant wasn’t serving food outside, but they accommodated us and were very friendly. Atmosphere: Town overall is great. The inside of the restaurant has a nice modern aesthetic, though we ate outside. While the patio has great views of Lake Como - it’s right near the ferry terminal and can get hectic. I thought about knocking off a star for atmosphere, but ultimately it’s still a great place to have a meal. And - if you don’t like the bustle, you can still have a great time inside.

Italian restaurant
Hosteria Del Platano is a restaurant in Varenna, Italy that serves fantastic Mediterranean food. The zucchini flowers were the best part of our meal, and the staff was very friendly. The pasta dishes we had were perfect, and we would definitely return here in the future!
Our dining experience at this restaurant was outstanding. We visited twice—once for lunch and once for dinner. The service was exceptional, with Norma as our host. She was knowledgeable, polite, and hospitable. The wine list featured a wide variety of local selections. The zucchini blossoms were delightful, and the tagliatelle with Puccini mushrooms was authentically prepared. The local lake fish was a unique and memorable experience. My wife ordered the beef tartar and the local steak, both of which were absolutely stunning. We highly recommend this restaurant in every way possible

We stumbled upon this restaurant on a day strolling along the lake on Varenna. The restaurant was set in a secluded area of the town where there’s not much going on. However, we had the honour to be the only table in the restaurant for lunch that afternoon sitting at the patio overlooking the lake. I can echo the other reviewer that this should be a Michelin starred restaurant quality food! We had the two course lunch ordering smoke trout and smoked duck, and lamb chop as well as pappardelle ragu for entree and finished off with a berries and gelato dessert. Everything was beyond this world delicious. Hopefully I’ll have the chance to visit again soon!

We were here in July and we had a wonderful evening. I would describe the cuisine as classic Italian but particularly high quality, all the courses were incredibly delicious. The small wine list consists almost exclusively of Italian wines, we drank a tasty Riesling from Piedmont. Particularly noteworthy is the very friendly and professional service, also in English. We would love to come back!

The BEST meal we had during our whole stay across both Milan & Lake Como. We felt well looked after by the staff and it was a delightful experience. We enjoyed the lamb chops so much that we ordered an extra plate to share! Exquisite food

The best meal in Lake Como. Refined yet simple dishes delivered with amazing service. Would highly recommend adding this at the top of your dining list for Lake Como!

We had a wonderful lunch. Service was welcoming and on point. Food was excellent, perfect quality of seasonal local products. A visit is highly recommended. Prices are reasonable, everything is produced in the restaurant. We had 7 different dishes - each was excellent and rich in flavor. The chef understands to highlight the taste of each ingredient and compose them well to balanced dishes. Thank you for having us!

We stayed in the air bnb attached to this restaurant which is also awesome. The food here was great, the service was warm and attentive when needed. The quality of the food was top tier and if you’re in the area and want a nice romantic dinner in a 17th century building I would highly recommend.

Stayed across the street at a really nice Airbnb. Figured we’d give the restaurant a try. Walk up and some elderly waitress abruptly swings open the door and says they’re all booked up despite the numerous open seats outside. I then walk back up to the door to inquire about reservations and she says “use the website” and shuts the door lol They need to fire this old dingbat, it’s not a good look. Especially for a run-down place without a view. Go a bit further down the street to a place like Bar Il Molo. Friendly staff and great view. Other great places in Varenna too. No need to visit this rude establishment. Instead, I just order from Varenna and get a better view from my accommodation than this place can provide, without a rude old lady 🤣
